Welcome to May’s Cornwall Living. I’d like to begin by celebrating some random acts of kindness . On several occasions in the last week or two, a few of us have found ourselves stuck in the mud, or on my part, broken down. And each time a local hero came to the rescue. So, a big thanks to you, particularly to the guy from The Hideaway cafe in Porthleven who even offered me tea!

As the World Pilot Gig Championship kicks off on the Isles of Scilly, we take a look at the wonderful and uniquely Cornish sport of gig rowing. A fantastic pastime abounding with community spirit, we discover that the post-row knees-up seems to be endorsed as actively as the rowing itself! We’ll have more on the Isles of Scilly in next month’s issue too. I had the pleasure of meeting the lovely garden designer Jo Midwinter at her home on the Camel estuary, to chat over a cuppa and pick up a few tips to get the garden in shape. Meeting Jo confirmed that it’s never too late for a change in direction to pursue your dreams. And I met Rob the owner of the Anglo Dawn in Falmouth bay to talk about hiring his boat for a family trip. In Foodie, along with a whole host of recipe ideas and all the latest gourmet gossip, we continue our quest to discover the finest restaurants and bistros across Cornwall – this month, we tootled up the coast to Newquay to sample the delicious pan Asian cuisine at Kahuna. And... I met the inspiring team at Bystro at the Bank in St Austell. You’ll also find the usual array of luxury properties, coastal escapes, interior design and summer fashion tips, Cornish art, competitions and much more.

A time of tranquil refreshment in our busy lives…

Kneehigh’s Asylum returns to Heligan

With Cornwall’s unique ‘Roaming Eco Spa’ going from strength to strength, Company Director Martin reflects on why the Kernow Springs project has proven so popular. “It seems many share our ethos that real comfort and true satisfaction really can be found in the simplest of forms. We all crave a little respite away from the demands of the modern word. Our ‘Eco’ tubs and sauna yurts are heated by the power of burning wood and together with our showers, changing yurts, chill out lounge and reception we are able to provide a truly beautiful, sustainable, cleansing Spa experience for any type of event.”

Summer’s coming and it is time to pick up the guy ropes and pitch the tent for the return of Kneehigh’s incredibly popular Asylum, set in the magnificent surroundings of the historic Lost Gardens of Heligan.

Whilst holidaying in Polzeath, the spa caught the eye of popular TV and radio personality Jo Whiley, who booked the whole family in for an exclusive two-hour ‘star gazer session’. They enjoyed the experience so much that she later tweeted: “Kernow Springs... what a wonderful thing to do!” Kernow Springs are back on the road this summer. Look out for their ‘Roming Eco Spa’ at The Masked Ball, Tunes In The Dunes, Wychwood Festival, Wonder Fields, Rock Oyster Festival, Port Eliot Festival, Boardmasters and Healy Cider Festival. So to entertain your guests with added wow factor at your party, wedding or corporate event, then get in touch with Martin and the team now. Even better still, Kernow Springs’ beautifully handcrafted ‘Eco Tubs’ are now available to buy, with prices starting from £2,236 including delivery and installation. www.kernowsprings.co.uk info@kernowsprings.co.uk 07779 374017

Now in its sixth year, The Asylum has firmly established itself as a must-go event on the summer calendar. The award-winning purpose-built tent is a unique space full of playful surprises and irreverent fun and this year’s season, running from Thursday 14th July to Sunday 28th August, is even bigger with three new productions. The season includes Daniel Jamieson’s The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk directed by Emma Rice, a dazzling and evocative play drawn from the life of artist Marc Chagall and his wife Bella; Simon Harvey directs FUP, his

adaptation of US novelist Jim Dodge’s bestselling modern fable about a strange family and their whisky-swilling duck, plus a visit from Shakespeare’s Globe and Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse, with Nick Bagnall’s touring production of The Two Gentlemen of Verona. Mike Shepherd, Artistic Director of Kneehigh, says: “It is great to be back with the Asylum for another year and with a fantastic season of work. In keeping with the spirit of the Asylum, we are embracing the old and the new, the mischievous and the subversive in what promises to be another wonderful adventure.” www.kneehigh.co.uk @WeAreKneehigh #Asylum16. New additions to armada at Helford River Children’s Sailing Trust The Helford River Children’s Sailing Trust (HRCST) recently expanded their fleet by seven vessels after an astounding donation of £30,000. The Duchy Health Charity (DHC) and Trinity House, who both support the promoting of health and wellbeing of those in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, donated a combined £24,000 while Budock Vean Hotel, Digs Property, Watson Marlow, Cornish Holiday Cottages and Steve Harman from Gunwalloe each gave £1500 to the cause.

Sally-Jane Coode says: “We’ve seen time and again how the trust gives youngsters a unique opportunity to participate in a healthy, life transforming experience.” www.hrcst.org.uk

The Trust has taken over 5000 children on to the river to learn to sail, kayak or row, helping to boost confidence, increase fitness and allowing them to truly enjoy the Cornish outdoor playground. This is the DHC’s third substantial grant to the trust.

Arm yourself with all the facts with a detailed property survey With spring well under way, now’s the time when many look for a new house, particularly in this wonderful county. When looking to buy, one of the most important considerations is to commission a detailed building condition survey to provide a thorough understanding of what repairs or regular maintenance may be necessary to keep your building in good condition. It’s all too easy to fall in love with your chosen property and overlook its true condition. This is all the more important with historic buildings, particularly those with listed building status. Ensuring the survey is carried out by a suitably qualified surveyor with conservation experience is essential. Andrew Hayes of Court Design & Conservation is a conservation accredited chartered building surveyor with over 25 years’ experience of working with historic buildings. As part of the condition survey a check is made of the local authority listed building consent database and any potential unauthorised work is raised as a query to assist the purchasers and their solicitor in the decision making process.

With its unspoiled harbour, iconic buildings and ever-changing seascape, Porthleven is quite the hub for artistic creativity – reflected, of course, in the galleries and studios. Excitingly, one such place has just brought local paintings, ceramics, jewellery and much more online; all the works in The Customs House Gallery, based on the harbourside, are now available to purchase through their website. “Our website has been set up for some time now but the e-commerce is a new element. Lots of our customers keep track of our artists’ work and now they can buy it more easily too,” says Louise. What’s more, The Customs House Gallery is signed up to Own Art, an initiative that allows you to spread the cost of eligible artworks over ten months with an interest-free loan. The scheme brings art to everyone and helps artists to reach a greater audience too. So, with this in mind, why not visit The Customs House Gallery online and the painting or sculpture that catches your eye may be more affordable than you previously thought… and now you have the luxury of browsing and buying at the click of a mouse button. Louise and the team will carefully package your purchase and post it to you via courier service. The only thing you need to worry about is: where to hang or place it? www.cornwall-art.co.uk 01326 569365

Having all of the relevant approvals in place enables a smooth transition of the historic building from one owner to the next and to ensure that these important buildings are respected and maintained, not just for their owners’ enjoyment but also for the historic heritage of Cornwall. Contact Andrew now for advice or a quotation. 01326 37600 www.courtdesign.co.uk

Rite of passage As the World Gig Rowing Championships kick off on the Isles of Scilly, we grab an oar and celebrate this great Cornish tradition. words by:

he late afternoon sun dances off the water. Feet splash and voices chatter excitedly as the sleek vessel launches off the slipway, six oars raised skywards, before disappearing into the sunset. This scene could be happening anywhere across Cornwall or the Isles of Scilly, in any given creek, harbour or waterway. It could have happened yesterday or 200 years ago. Throughout the spring and summer, you’re bound to witness a similar sight across the coast: men and women, young and old, nervous beginners and seasoned veterans, launching into the water aboard a Cornish pilot gig.

Felix Rowe

The tradition of pilot gig rowing is firmly embedded in Cornish culture. As Ted Gundry, President of Porthleven Gig Club, notes: “This is a sport that is uniquely Cornish.” For many, membership of the local club is not just a hobby, it’s a rite of passage. And those who have lined up on the start line will tell you that representing your village or stretch of water – and competing against arch rivals – is a badge of honour. As with many traditions, this one was born naturally in response to a specific need, closely linked to the evolution of the lifeboat – mentions of heroic rescues in purposebuilt craft across the south west date back

to the late 17th century. But preventing disaster was just as important. When large ships came into port, experienced ‘pilots’ with local knowledge were called upon to navigate them safely through the occasionally treacherous waters. So local gig crews would compete to take the pilots out to the ship. Speed was of the essence; the gig that got there first would win the contract. Newly built gigs were put to the test against other local vessels, again fostering the competitive spirit. And so, gradually, a sport was born, a distinctly Cornish one that flourishes to this day. Shortly before going to press we very sadly learnt of the passing of Ted Gundry, who was interviewed for this piece and spoke passionately about his love of gig rowing. Ted was President of Porthleven Gig Club, a veteran broadcaster with BBC Cornwall, and a much loved local personality who will be missed by many.

are typically constructed out of Cornish narrow leaf elm, with all gigs today based on the design of 1838 Treffry, which is still afloat and rowed today by Newquay Rowing Club. It’s fair to say the gig is emblematic of another fine, centuries old Cornish tradition: boatbuilding. So, as if we really need to ask, what’s the attraction exactly? For Ted Gundry, it’s everything from the elegant craftsmanship to the manoeuvrability. “Without doubt, the beautiful line and design attracts the enthusiast, the sea worthiness and ease of handling.” But also it’s the inclusive, community spirit: “It’s a craft that can

Did you know?

“Early gigs cost around £1 per foot, with the oars, masts, spars and sails extra. Today you wouldn't get much change from £25,000!” explains Ted. There are around 70 gig rowing clubs across the UK, most of these in Cornwall, but the sport has reached as far as America and Australia.

accommodate the whole family. Today, races are organised for men, women and children, so that one minute little 12-yearold Jimmy can be seen eagerly climbing aboard, to be followed by his grandfather or grandmother for one of the Veteran races. With an experienced Cox’n at the helm, the opportunity is there for anyone who is keen to get afloat.” This idea of inclusivity and community is fundamental to gig rowing today. It belongs to everyone. Artist Caroline Cleave, speaking in a recent Made For Life Foundation article, explained how she took to the sport after settling in Port Isaac with husband Jon. “I discovered Cornish gig rowing”, she says, “a fantastic team sport, which is thrilling and energetic. I have always loved the sea, so to combine the two was fantastic.” The highlight of the season is the annual World Pilot Gig Championships (WPGC) on the Isles of Scilly, this year from 29th April to 2nd May. Now in its 27th year, Chairman of

the WPGC, Rick Persich, tells us more about this landmark event. “In the 1980s, interest in gig racing was rising and over a pint of ale a group of Scillonians decided it would be a good idea to have a gig race on Scilly during the May bank holiday weekend. The first year 12 visiting gigs took part which, together with the island gigs, gave 17 on the start line.” Ted adds: “It was declared a success, so plans were soon laid for the next year, and so the Championships gradually evolved into what it is today the fastest growing sport in the UK, with more than 150 gigs expected to take part.” For Rick, the idyllic island archipelago setting makes the event particularly unique. “There are many excellent events on the mainland, but after they are completed the crews go home. On Scilly they cannot, so all day and each evening they are thrown together. This leads to fantastic bonhomie and forges lasting friendships. It is also very safe for the children to be allowed to

through. “The number of gigs taking part grows by about five per year,” explains Rick. “Maggie Tucker’s heroes in our catering tunnel will provide about 5000 very healthy high carb meals at bargain prices over the weekend. The income from this provides finance for the following year’s event.” And at this year’s championships there’s even more reason to celebrate, as it marks the pinnacle of The Great Big Cornish Gig Project. Over the last year, a team of injured, sick and wounded veterans from the armed forces have been building a new gig in an open workshop at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall in Falmouth, alongside renowned gig builder Andrew Nancarrow. Visitors to the museum have been lucky enough to witness the gig gradually taking shape. The beautiful new gig, H4H Valiant, was launched recently in Falmouth, before being rowed to the Isles of Scilly by the vets to join the fleet in time for the Championships, where the Help For Heroes Rowing Team is competing. It’s never too late to get involved with your local club, so if you’re feeling curious, why not give it a go? The sport is governed by the Cornish Pilot Gig Association and to find out more, visit www.cpga.co.uk where you’ll find details of clubs and how to get aboard. Here in Cornwall, you’re never more than a few miles from a club, with many welcoming beginners, and providing taster sessions. It’s fantastic fitness, a great way to built confidence and meet interesting people from all walks of life. And, I’m reliably informed, the post-row knees-up is approached as fervently as the rowing itself. So, go on – dip your toe in, grab an oar, and take to the water… it’s a rite of passage!

wander. The islands are very safe.” Nikki Banfield, AKA ‘the Barefoot Photographer’ who often photographs the event, relives the excitement on the start line: “All you can see is gigs stretching out for over a mile, with St Agnes and Gugh as the backdrop, and when the flag goes down at the start of that first race you know it. The sound is phenomenal as the rowers all pull that first stroke and their paddles hit the pins at the same time. The determination and tension that every single rower has during that 1.59 nautical miles is tangible and continues throughout the entire weekend; easing only after the finals when there is a collective sigh of relief and they relax and let their hair down. Rowers definitely know how to party!” This is one thing that all involved in gig rowing will agree on: while honour and pride are battled out on the water, there’s plenty of time for fun too. “The enormous competitiveness and occasional aggressiveness expressed when racing quickly transforms into camaraderie afterwards”, beams Rick, who works tirelessly throughout the event to ensure it runs smoothly. “The sea of happy faces when I give my thank you speech at the presentation is all the reward I need.” There couldn’t be a more beautiful location to hold an event like this, and the fellowship is infectious, as reignited old rivalries descend into laugher and revelry at the bar. With so many hungry mouths to feed, catering is a big operation for the organising committee – a voluntary, community-based, not-for-profit association and another fantastic example of island spirit shining

arveth House is just near the sought after village of Tregony; a thriving community with shops, pub, post office, churches, a primary school and its own secondary school. The perfect place to explore the stunning countryside leading down to the popular village of St Mawes, renowned for its sailing and Olga Polizzi’s Hotel Tresanton. The Roseland is loved for its unspoilt coastline and sparsely populated countryside, much of which is owned by the National Trust. The Fal estuary is one of the most picturesque in Cornwall with sheltered waters and safe moorings in one of the largest natural harbours in the world. Nearby are beautiful beaches and wonderful gardens. Carveth House is set in its own grounds of about one and a half acres, with a range of attractive outbuildings and a holiday cottage. There is a traditional porch leading into a hallway with exposed granite flooring, with a broad drawing room to the left and a sitting room to the right, both with lovely open fireplaces. The sitting room leads into a spacious conservatory, a relaxing spot to admire the gorgeous gardens. The rear of the house dates back to 1790 and consists of a generously proportioned, traditional farmhouse kitchen with original flagstone

flooring, and an AGA as the focal point. There is also a pantry, boot room, laundry room and useful cloakroom so plenty of room for dogs, wellies and wet coats. Upstairs are four spacious bedrooms. The en suite master and guest room are at the front of the house with picturesque views over the gardens and countryside. To the rear are two other spacious bedrooms and family bathroom. Outside, the well-established gardens consist of lawned areas with attractive flower borders; a tennis court, small orchard, sunken vegetable garden, and three stone outbuildings. The detached cottage is beautifully finished. The pretty sitting room has French doors leading onto a private south facing garden and there are two en suite double bedrooms and a third single bedroom. A wonderful opportunity to buy a traditional Cornish farmhouse in a stunning location.

Advice

Is your ? d e t c e t o r p e incom How would you pay your mortgage and bills if you were unable to work? We speak to financial planning expert Matt Begley to find out more.

M

any of us happily insure our mobile, jewellery or pet, yet often neglect to protect the income stream that pays the mortgage and funds our lifestyle… That’s why it’s important to have adequate protection in place to cover the mortgage and day-to-day living expenses, should a main wage earner be unable to work due to illness, injury or of course in the worst case scenario, death. Each year 1 million UK workers suddenly find themselves unable to work due to serious illness or injury.* However, according to research from Aviva, only 35% of the UK population have Life Cover in place, 8% have Income Protection and 11% have Critical Illness*. With the active lifestyles we lead today, accident or illness could affect us at any time... In February 2013, Paula, a local physiotherapist from Perranporth went on a ski holiday with friends to the Swiss Alps. She already had travel insurance, but unfortunately was unaware that it was necessary to upgrade to cover winter sports. After only a few days on holiday she suffered a severe complex fracture of her right leg and ankle, which resulted in hospitalisation in Geneva and major surgery with plates and pins. Regrettably, her travel insurance was not valid to cover her return flight, but

fortunately Paula had taken out an Income Protection policy through Harris Begley, which paid a tax free lump sum of £1200 for ‘fracture cover’, plus £1,000 a month until she was well enough to work again. For the next six months whilst Paula was unable to work, her Income Protection policy proved invaluable! In Paula’s own words: “I’m so grateful to have had the Income Protection policy in place – without it I really wouldn’t have been able to pay my mortgage and household bills.” Harris Begley is one of Cornwall and Devon’s most respected Financial Advisors with offices based in Truro, Helston, Hayle, Penzance and Plymouth. There are a multitude of protection plans available to cover varying circumstances and Harris Begley can advise you of the best solution to suit your requirements, as the options can be quite complex and it’s not just about which is the cheapest... For a free, no-obligation initial consultation to discuss your income protection plan, please contact Harris Begley on 01736 366550 or email enquiries@harrisbegley.co.uk www.harrisbegley.co.uk

Key areas to consider

n Protection to deliver a regular income should you fall ill or suffer an injury meaning that you may be off work for a considerable period of time. An Income Protection policy is the main option on offer here. n Protection to pay out a lump sum should you suffer a serious illness such as a heart attack, cancer or a stroke. In this respect, a Critical Illness policy may meet that need. n Protection should you die. This is on offer through various forms of Life Assurance, or schemes such as Family Income Benefit. In all cases you need to be aware that certain restrictions, terms, conditions and exclusions may apply and you must be honest when filling out the forms.

Out & about

Gone fishing A magical day out on the water… so much more than just fishing!

I

magine one of those fabulous, unforgettable days with friends and family out on the seas around Falmouth. Sun glistening on the water, maybe you spot some dolphins or a cheeky seal sunbathing on the rocks. You help your kids catch their first fish, and take some delicious fish back to barbeque for supper; it can’t get any better! We’d heard that Rob and Andy offer just such a memorable experience aboard Anglo Dawn. As Rob, owner of the boat, tells me: “We do everything from fishing trips for the serious sport anglers who travel the world for their fishing, to shark fishing and mixed species trips… but what we really love to do is take a group of friends and family out on the boat in the same way that I take my own family and friends out! Which might mean

some fishing with lots of friendly advice if needed, to a bit of wildlife spotting, to a stop in a little harbour for an ice-cream; with lots of interesting stories from the skipper along the way. It’s just like having your own boat!” They cruise out from the safe haven of Falmouth Marina on one of the most comfortable boats operating in Falmouth bay to enjoy a great day at sea. Anglo Dawn – a fast, spacious and family friendly boat – is the perfect choice for any day at sea around the beautiful Cornish coast; the experienced and friendly crew will introduce you to the local environment and help you make the most of your day. Falmouth Marina is on the outskirts of the harbour town and even getting onboard couldn’t be easier. Park in the free car park next to the pontoons at the marina; your crew will greet you and lead you through the maze of beautiful yachts to Anglo Dawn. After a quick but thorough briefing, you’ll be on your way down the Penryn river and out into the estuary or venture out into the glorious Falmouth bay to enjoy some time afloat. If holidays are all about creating lasting memories, then this has to be one of the best!

Anglo Dawn can be chartered by a group for a full day, half day or an evening. Individuals are also welcome. Fishing trips for beginners right through to specialist groups are catered for.

Chicago

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Tuesday 10th to Saturday 14th May The nation's favourite Shakespeare play will be performed as never before; magically intertwining professional RSC actors, including the acclaimed actress Ayesha Dharker as ‘Titania’, amateur theatre companies and schools from across the county. Members of local Carnon Downs Drama Group will play the parts of Bottom and The Mechanicals.

And then there’s the pie in Titus Andronicus. Spymonkey will perform them all - sometimes lingeringly, sometimes messily, sometimes movingly, sometimes musically and always hysterically. A solemn, sombre and sublimely funny tribute to the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. Age Recommendation 14+. Contains Nudity.

Hub Sounds

Friday 20th May The Cornwall Music Education Hub is proud to present its annual musical showcase, with a variety of young performers from across the county. From strings to samba, jazz bands to rock bands, piano solos to full orchestras… something for all musical tastes.

A treasure trove Visit Sail Loft Emporium in historic Charlestown for that unique and elusive piece you’ve been searching for.

S

ail Loft Emporium is no ordinary antiques centre. Just a stone’s throw from the historic Charlestown Harbour, home of tall ships and film location for Poldark, it’s home to around 30 traders selling all manner of unusual items from their cabinets and stalls. Amongst the antiques, collectables, vintage and retro merchandise you’ll find shimmering glass, stunning china, beautiful jewellery and a great variety of interesting collectables. If you are looking for an attractive small piece of furniture, seek out

the stalls of ‘Done Up and Dusted’ or Richard Lamb. Antique silver, glass and collectables are the forte of ‘Ingledene Antiques’, or visit Jenny Stewart’s space for beautifully displayed unusual gifts. Whether you want vintage handbags, delicate silverware, books and records or retro telephones, you will find a plenty to choose from at reasonable prices. The Emporium is upstairs at The Old Workshop, a wonderful listed historic building, formally a gun store and extensively renovated in recent years. Sturdy beams and granite steps add to the ambience of yesteryear, transporting you back in time to the days when many of the items on sale would have been used. Also at The Old Workshop, you’ll find The Craft Kiln, a showcase for Cornish crafts, where you can meet the makers and purchase a unique handmade gift. Beautiful jewellery, glass, ceramics, woodturning, soaps, candles, textiles, pictures and cards are among the products on offer. And while you’re there, why not pop into Cscape Art, the gallery and studio of artist, Sarah Blakey, and her photographer husband, Mick. See the artist at work and perhaps invest in an original painting or photographic print or card. So, if you’re looking for that elusive and unique piece, pay Sail Loft Emporium, The Craft Kiln and Cscape Art a visit – you won’t leave disappointed, but you may well leave with your hands full of interesting treasures!

The Summer breeze

Celebrated artists Martyn Dempsey and Anna-Louise Felstead bring a new exhibition to Port Isaac.

O

n the dramatic north coast, in fishing village Port Isaac, you’ll find artist Martyn Dempsey. Born in Lancashire, Martyn moved to Cornwall at the age of 19 and before long discovered a passion for surfing – an all too familiar story for many living in the Duchy! For Martyn, however, the sea was not just for riding waves; he was soon inspired by Cornish seascapes and rugged coastlines to paint. Now, over 30 years later, Martyn is set up in his own gallery overlooking Port Isaac bay. Highly successful, his works have been shown alongside the likes of Sir Terry Frost, John Miller and Peter Lanyon. Martyn has gathered inspiration and exhibited (and surfed) widely across the globe – Palma de Mallorca, Australia and Bali to name but a few places. However, it was on the occasion of being home in Port Isaac that he met another artist and close friend, Anna-Louise Felstead.

Like Martyn, Anna-Louise was drawn by the creative pull of Cornwall, moving to Port Isaac in 2009 and opening her own gallery. Following a successful two years, she swapped seascapes for cityscapes and flew out to New York, settling in Manhattan. Once there, it’s safe to say her artistic scope didn’t stop at cityscapes… she became an art lecturer and – as the older sister of Binky – Anna-Louise once featured in the reality TV show Made in Chelsea teaching the cast a life drawing class. This summer Martyn and Anna-Louise – back from their various adventures overseas – are combining creative efforts and hosting an exhibition titled Summer Breeze in Martyn’s Port Isaac gallery. Expect an exciting and varied collection of art on show. Martyn’s works are textured and rich in colour, using both brush and palette knife to evoke Cornwall – and the places he has travelled – in fresh and often abstract ways. Being a reportage artist, Anna-Louise’s works are mainly painted on location; the scenes she captures are lively and colourful. Whereas her time in New York and Manhattan produced large-scale, bold and abstract pieces. The exhibition promises to be a captivating display – it seems a visit to Martyn’s Port Isaac gallery this summer is definitely in order...

Situated in the historic village port of Charlestown, you’ll find Atishoo Gallery opposite the old chapel, featuring work by more than 80 artists and craftspeople. The gallery offers a bespoke picture framing service and an extensive range of art cards and prints to buy. Visit the website where you can buy online and check gallery opening times.

From 26th March to 11th June, the new exhibition, ‘Fred Hall: From Newlyn School to Caricature’, brings together a range of work from this versatile artist (18601948) who painted not only in Newlyn, but also the landscapes around Porlock and Newbury, and was a keen advocate of the new ‘square brush’ technique.

Vertigo Sea is a three-screen, 48-min film on humankind’s relationship with the sea; an exploration of its role in slavery, migration and whaling. Fusing dramatic footage from the BBC, archival material from BFI and newly shot scenes, the immersive installation delivers a potent reminder of current issues. (30th April to 25th June).

The gallery’s light and airy space on Porthleven’s harbour side exhibits original work by some of Cornwall’s finest artists in a range of mediums. A bespoke framing service is available here as well as the Own Art scheme. The gallery is open daily 10.30-5pm and you can view the work available on the regularly updated website.

foodie

It’s got to be

fun!

Delicious food, confident friendly staff, great entertainment and an informal, welcoming space. I’m at Bystro at the Bank in St Austell.

words by:

Mandy Milano

a

nd… it’s one of the phrases that Ben the owner of Bystro at the Bank in St Austell and the Lamb and Flag in Redruth, uses a lot a lot. But without doubt, his biggest passion about owning the two places is people; and… if I ever have another career change, then I would like to work for Ben. But more of that later. Ben, and his new General Manager Stephen, greet me warmly in the amazing space that is Bystro at the Bank, stunning black and white tiles next to stripped wood flooring. The bar is huge... “Ridiculously huge” Ben tells me with a grin. “Like much of the building; it’s the original bank counter, we have reused as much of the old building as we can, it’s what the building wants, and it’s what you do when you’re working on a shoestring! We’ve done nearly all of the renovations ourselves working with the new team.” He grins again. “It took five of us to do the grouting for the floor tiles… at 1 o’clock in the morning!” And they have made a really great job of it, with large scrubbed tables and comfy chairs, some vast squashy sofas for relaxing and catching up with friends. The old interview rooms and manager’s office are separate, enclosed dining areas; a

brilliant idea for families but also made good use of by community groups and business people… the Cornish Language Society are meeting in one when I’m there and a woman is using another to write a book! We are brought excellent coffees by Jade who will look after us with smiles and courtesy whilst we talk; I also notice her greeting customers by name, chatting happily with them; there’s just a lovely warm feel of community and quiet gentle banter. Steve and Ben also interrupt our conversation to greet someone or have a bit of light back-chat, whether it’s a customer, member of staff or delivery man – all are made to feel welcome. Award-winning chef Stephen has only just joined the team as General Manager. Previously he was Head Chef at the Idle Rocks, General Manager at the Llawnroc and spent some time as Head Chef at the New Inn on the Isles of Scilly. “Where I met my wife, Jo”, he explains. But it could have all been so different; Stephen actually trained as a mechanical engineer, but it was while he was at university that he gave up his degree and started cheffing. “I’d always had part-time jobs in catering as a teenager and then as a

student – and it really got to me. So I had my mid-life crisis early, dropped out of uni and ended up working for Wok Wok in London, a fabulous Thai, Malay restaurant with all the food cooked fresh to order. Michael Caine used to come in every Friday evening for his curry take away!” By then he’d really got the bug and started to train formally as a chef, working in some of the best restaurants around. He continues: “it’s all that fine-dining experience I want to bring here, not to turn it into a fine dining restaurant, but I really see no reason why we can’t use the same principles of wonderful cooking and big flavours. I’m about honest food – it’s not all about presentation – you start with your eye certainly, but then the food itself has to shine through and be delicious.” Ben chips in: “It’s why I’ve brought Stephen onto the team. We have the same ethos about the team and what the place should be… but he has all the foodie know-how. With him on-board we can really develop our menus and take the food we offer to a much higher level. Also I’m all about developing the team here, and in Redruth. Bystro at the Bank has been open a year now and the staff are ready for a real step

change, the team are really keen to learn about great cooking and to learn from Steve.” Ben has lived in Cornwall since he was two and has a real love of the place and its people. Especially the people… I quickly realise that is all about ‘people’ with Ben; that, and his oft spoken “And, it’s got to be fun!” He tells me that he has always worked in hospitality and catering, spending twelve years ‘front of house’ in various places across Cornwall, learning all the time. Then five years, “going corporate” Ben calls it, when he worked for Compass Group doing HR and business control. After all that experience he struck out on his

FCM 20--ED--Bystro at the Bank--Guest Editor--4.00.indd 4

own starting Delicate Trade Consultancy which helps companies with business development and growth in the catering trade. He is particularly proud of his competition for chefs, helping to develop the next generation of great chefs – all about the people again! Ben tells me: “But I had wanted forever to have my own restaurant, not just one but a chain of them was always my dream. But I never seemed to find the courage and the opportunity at the same time. Then, aged 39 with turning 40 looming as a major landmark, I said to my wife Melanie: we should just go for this and see how far we get. So we started looking and Melanie found

15/04/2016 17:57

“It’s the quirkiest, gothic building with a spire, dating back to 1879 when it was a temperance bar… and it’s absolutely charming” the old bank, called me up and said “It’s huge but has life and personality. Let’s go for it!” I’m pretty sure she’s been regretting it ever since… I’m here 24/7!” Then more recently, he bought the Lamb and Flag and his dream of owning a chain of restaurants started to become a reality. “It’s the quirkiest, gothic building with a spire, dating back to 1879 when it was a temperance bar… and it’s absolutely charming!” I’m beginning to realise that restoring and bringing life back to wonderful old buildings is also a bit of a passion for Ben, he often says “it’s what the building wants” or “the building talks to me” – in a very practical, down to earth kind of way. But foremost is his love of his team, he tells me: “My belief is that you should always put the team first, yes even before customers, we talk to our customers, listen to what they want and act upon it… But the team comes first. If they are happy, confident, feel valued and love what they do then the rest will follow, and of course they will give the best customer service ever. I train managers, not bar or waiting or kitchen staff; they get to make decisions on a daily basis – we actively encourage it… and it works. Of course sometimes mistakes happen but we don’t have a blame culture here, it’s what can we learn and move on!” In fact, many of his team started work before the Bystro opened, spending their time painting and cleaning and getting stuck in to the renovation. “It really helped the team gel, and they feel they have an investment in this place, same in Redruth. They love the building as much as I do. Stephen has exactly the

same ethos about the team as I do, but he also brings this magnificent foodie background.” They are still working on both buildings. “It doesn’t have to be all done and perfect. Someone with lots of money may have ripped the inside of the Bank out and started from scratch. But the by-product of doing things on a shoestring is that we do it slowly, we listen to the building and to our customers, learn what the architecture will let us do, what works and what doesn’t. We’ll use the bulletproof glass from the vault to make a table; the interview rooms are really popular with families, groups and private diners. The building gets a say and, better still, our customers and team feel part of the journey.” So back to where I started… I could definitely work for Ben and Stephen, but they don’t have much need for an old hack! So instead, both their restaurants will go on my list of places to use for meetings, relaxing with friends or a great night out with some delicious food and stonking entertainment!

Award-winning Executive Chef Nick Hodges has pinched his granny Alice’s secret fish pie recipe for the new menu too. “Traditionally the first port of call for those on the working boats after a hard day out at sea, the pub is now open for everybody to enjoy”, says Nick. “It offers a cosy, casual dining experience with real ales and local ciders on tap including our own brew. I remember from my childhood – jumping off the quay then tucking into some hearty food. Now it’s my children, and I aim to bring back those good old-fashioned family values. We hope you can join us for a jar!” THE WORKING BOAT 01326 312440 www.theworkingboat.co.uk

MORE THAN JUST A CAFÉ AT RENAISSANCE With spectacular views across Penzance Harbour and St Michael’s Mount, Renaissance is the perfect place to enjoy a cup of Cornish coffee, fine wine or locally brewed Ale. All of the dishes on the menu are freshly prepared and cooked to order using the best local produce available. The menu has a wide variety of dishes including local fresh fish, homemade 100% steak burgers, stone-baked pizzas and several international dishes such as cod and chorizo chowder and patatas bravas. It has also been tailored to suit a gluten-free diet, so most dishes either can be or are already gluten-free. Owners Matthew and Kelly are understandably proud of what they have accomplished since taking over four years ago, taking time to build the restaurant’s reputation for delicious food and a great atmosphere, and are excited about the future and direction it’s moving in. So, for a warm and inviting welcome, head over to Renaissance in Penzance and let the team give you a more than café experience. But the restaurant is fast building a reputation as a proper foodie destination too. Since winning its second AA Rosette award, thanks to the efforts of Head Chef Adam Cawood and his team, it has cemented its status as a top eatery. And you don’t even need to be staying at the hotel to sample the great food and wonderful atmosphere. Now, with a delicious new set lunch menu, there’s even more reason to check it out. FORAGED FOOD AT THE GLOBE IN FOWEY It’s all about foraging this month at The Globe in Fowey, explains owner Tony Goodman. “We love local suppliers and Cornish produce but we’ve taken it one step further.” Head Chef Glynn Wellington has been out on the shores and in the hedgerows and found fresh seaweed, gorse flowers and lots of wild garlic and these have found their way into dishes on the dinner menu. “The dried seaweed gives flavour to the seafood sauce for line caught pollack dish and the wild garlic goes in the gnocchi”, he says. “Gorse flowers adorn the white chocolate cheesecake. It’s proper cooking from the land and sea around us and it doesn’t get any better than that!”

ANOTHER BLUE MOON OVER ROSEWARNE MANOR Three years ago this September, Rosewarne Manor played host to a ‘once in a blue moon’ charity dinner, organised and run by the Cornish Chefs Club, raising £23,000 in just one, hugely successful night. And this year they intend to do it again. Sunday 3rd July will see a one-night restaurant in a marquee feed 110

people with a fantastic eight-course menu, each dish being prepared by a different head chef. After a successful year in 2013, this year’s target is to raise £20,000 for Macmillan, Hospitality Action and Children’s Hospice South West. The real challenge, however, is to run the event with zero cost, so that every penny goes to charity. Tickets, which include champagne reception, an eight-course menu from award-winning chefs, an auction, raffle and entertainment, cost just £100 and are available at Rosewarne Manor. The auction, we’ve been tipped, will include some ‘once in a lifetime’ items! Updates and more information about this event and the Cornish Chefs’ Club can be found on Facebook: ‘Cornish Chefs Club Epic Event 2’. We hope to see you there!

BREAK OUT OF YOUR SHELL AT THE LEMON ARMS It’s always around this time of year that we, living on the coast, start smacking our lips at the sumptuous seafood dishes that will soon line the specials boards of our favourite eateries. Heading to Mylor Bridge and the reliable Lemon Arms is a winning choice, at any time of the year, but especially as spring breaks upon us and the warming weather begins to inspire our appetite for something a little more surf than turf. A short walk from the harbour, the seafood served at the Lemon Arms is fresh and a special mention must go to the spider crab which, delivered straight from the harbour, is now delicately prepared and delicious to the taste, served with crusty bread

and French fries, making it the perfect, light start to your spring. THE LEMON ARMS Lemon Hill, Mylor Bridge TR11 5NA 01326 373666

PORTHLEVEN CHEF ONCE AGAIN IN THE LIMELIGHT After flying the flag for the South West on BBC Two’s Great British Menu 2015, Porthleven’s Jude Kereama has been invited back to compete again this year. The series will broadcast in a few months time, but in the meantime, why not visit Kota – which means shellfish in Maori – and sample his food for yourself? Jude’s seafood with a spin comes as a result of an impressive professional background, having worked in an array of top eateries in London before moving to Cornwall. Since, along with his wife Jane, he has established a sterling reputation for Kota,

recognised by two AA rosettes, a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a place in the Top 50 Summer Restaurants in Britain. The couple will also provide fierce competition for anyone in the running for the titles Best Chef , Jude, and Best Restaurant, Kota Kai (Kota’s sister restaurant) in the upcoming What’s On Cornwall Awards 2016. EXPERIENCE RELAXED, DESTINATION DINING AT THE CORNWALL HOTEL Set in 43 acres of wooded parkland in the St Austell bay area, The Cornwall has built a reputation as a destination eating place. From Sunday lunch to afternoon tea and brasserie-style dining, expect delicious, high quality food and beautiful presentation. Regional dishes include Fowey mussels, crab, locally-sourced steaks and Cornish bass. The ambience here is relaxed, with a true family focus, including a children’s menu to tempt the appetites of small guests. The spring sunshine is increasingly tempting guests to take lunch or afternoon tea al fresco on the Parkland Terrace. With its sweeping views over gardens and woodland, it’s an ideal place for pre-dinner drinks, a meeting place for locals or a place to unwind after an indulgent day in The Clearing Spa. Recent foodie innovations at The Cornwall include a pop-up pizzeria, which proved very popular with families at Easter and will return during the summer. The mouth-watering pizzas are made in a wood-fired oven. Parents can relax on the terrace with a glass of something chilled, while the children play petanque or croquet. FOOD FESTIVAL FEAST IN PORTHLEVEN At time of print, the team here at Cornwall Living are eager to escape and witness the flags flying and tents tautening as Porthleven once again prepares to play host to the annual Food Festival. This weekend is one we’ve always marked in our calendar, with an array of various culinary delights to look forward to. Kicking off on Friday evening, there are several busk-stops, showcasing the best local acoustic talent as we wander around the quayside, exploring the eclactic mix of street food on offer that proudly demonstrates the Cornish culinary scene. On Saturday, we’re excited for a cook-off between TV chef Antony Worrall Thompson and local celebrity chef Jude Kereama in an event thats always popular to the inquisitive appetites of those who frequent the festival. Later, the famous Fisherman’s BBQ will be sizzling away, drawing us from across the quay from ‘12 ish’, offering sumptuous servings of tuna, sardines, prawns and, depending on the recent haul, mackerel. And we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to washing it all down. From a traditional ale tent or a bar with a view beneath the iconic Porthleven clocktower, to a literature tent where there’s culture on tap next to our tipple of choice, we have a selection of local ales, lagers, wines and cocktails, so whereever we find ourselves around the harbour, we can keep our pallette cleansed, ready for the next course of the foodfestival-feast. So if you missed it this year, make a note in your calendar for 2017 now – this is an event not to be missed! PORTHLEVEN FOOD FESTIVAL www.porthlevenfoodfestival.com

GALICIA

We sample a delicious seafood plate inspired by the flavours of northern Spain.

he Ferryboat Inn’s Head Chef Robert Bunny shares one of his current favourite recipes including octopus. “I love this style of food at the moment after recently returning from Spain, where I couldn’t get enough octopus”, he explains. “I do a similar dish using cuttlefish if I can’t get octopus. This is my take on Galician-style octopus, with the addition of beautifully sweet Helford cockles. It’s easy to prepare in advance and warm through last minute. You can serve it on one big plate and let everyone tuck in whilst you all enjoy the Cornish sunshine!”

aking the most of the lighter evenings, my partner, M, and I took the opportunity to enjoy our first proper road trip of the year to the north coast. With its beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife, Newquay beckoned us and, as well as the waves, we wanted to try out an exciting new restaurant too. So, we hopped in the trusty camper and pootled up to Hendra Holiday Park. With all the facilities close to the van, and being under a mile’s taxi ride to the restaurant (so we could have a tipple or two), it proved the perfect place to stay for the night. Having heard good things about the reopening of Kahuna Restaurant, run by a husband and wife team Ryan and Kelly Mather, we decided to check it out. Their pan Asian style stems from many years of travelling. Being a big fan of Asian food, and having travelled a little myself, Kahuna seemed an obvious choice. As soon as we stepped inside, we were greeted by the attentive staff and shown to our cosy table. The restaurant interior feels warm and tranquil, with retro green-leef wallpaper adding to the relaxing vibe – a contrast to the hustle and bustle of the

Newquay. My eyes were instantly drawn to the clean lines and lighting, big wooden spheres above tables and strings of golden bulbs hanging like bunting from the ceiling. Somehow it seemed slightly spa-like. We ordered a couple of Cornish lagers, taking our time to peruse the tantalising menu... if only I could sample everything! To kick things off we shared a taster plate, brimming with tempura prawns with chilli mayonnaise, duck spring rolls with sticky Thai plum sauce and Thai chicken satay skewers with peanut sauce. The tempura batter was beautifully crunchy, while the prawns were cooked to perfection. The spring rolls were packed full of fragrant spices and crunchy veg. And the chicken satay sauce melted on my tongue! These were served with a refreshing, crunchy, aromatic, salad. It was the perfect amount to share for a starter. I could go on eating this starter all evening if I could! For mains M ordered the double Indonesian Mie Goreng, a large bowl of stir-fried yellow noodles, with a generous amount of belly pork, prawns, spicy vegetables and an egg on top. Judging from the empty plate it was a wise move, with M praising the delicious flavours. I chose the Thai green curry with belly

pork and jasmine rice – just the right amount of spice for me. I can honestly say I’ve not had a better Thai curry outside of Thailand; it packed a punch without compromising on flavour. Ryan and Kelly must really know their stuff! When it came to desert it had to be the salted caramel chocolate pot with cashew crumble for me, while M had the banana fritters with toasted sesame seeds and caramel sauce. Both were a rare treat and a perfect end to a very impressive meal. After a few drinks in the town, it was back to the camper before hitting the surf the following day. Still reminiscing over the fine food, not even getting stuck in the mud could dampen our spirits (thanks to the Hendra team for pulling us out!). Apparently Kahuna does takeaway too, and with another great restaurant to add to our list, bring on the next road trip!

Every issue, we dine undercover at a different restaurant, tasting the menu and putting the team through their paces in search of the finest eateries, freshest produce and best service. It’s a tough job but someone has to do it! Look out for our ‘Tried & Tasted’ seal of approval.

Got to visit... FISTRAL BEACH

Rated as one of the best surfing breaks in Europe, Fistral is Newquay’s iconic beach and is perfect for surfers and families alike. Boasting nearly half a mile of golden sand the beach is backed by a row of boutiques, restaurants and cafes. So, when you’ve worked up an appetite in the waves or need a cool drink after relaxing in the sunshine, you need only venture a few steps to the back of the beach to enjoy all that Fistral has to offer. The beach is also a great destination when the sun starts to sink low on the horizon – where better to watch a Cornish sunset, to a soundtrack of cool vibes, than overlooking the water at one of Fistral’s fine eateries.

t’s no wonder that The Godolphin Arms is one of AOL Travel’s ‘Top 15 restaurants with amazing views’. Sitting on the water’s edge of Mounts Bay and drinking in the serene seascape around the iconic St Michael’s Mount, you’ll enjoy one of the most magnificent views in the country, if not the world. Sure enough, you’ll be hard pushed to find a more idyllic spot. So why not complete a stroll on Marazion’s golden beach, or a trek to the island and back at low tide, with a visit to this chic but relaxed waterside eatery? And with the arrival of new Head Chef, Nick Eyre, and his tempting spring menu, there’s even more reason to try it out. Growing up in his parent’s pub in Great Holland, Essex, Nick developed a keen passion for food and drink early on, seizing any opportunity to lend a helping hand. From here, he trained as a chef before heading for the bright lights of London. Now, he wields an impressive CV, having worked in the corporate catering arena, including a stint as Head Chef at HSBC’s headquarters in Canary Wharf – at the time the largest corporate catering facility in Europe.

Having built an impressive reputation for fine food, Nick went back to his roots in Essex, working at the Alma Inn and Dining Rooms, which soon became one of Trip Advisor’s top 20 places to eat in Essex. Having fallen in love with Cornwall, especially the St Ives Bay area, Nick and his young family enjoyed regular visits to the county until, by good fortune, the dream position came up at The Godolphin Arms. The rest, as they say, is history! Nick relishes the prospect of working with local suppliers, fishermen and farmers to develop a seasonal menu reflective of local produce. Seasonal dishes we can expect include a delicious new take on the crab sandwich – dressed Cornish crab fresh from Newlyn, served in the shell, with fresh brown bread and Cornish butter and a side of baby leaves.

Painting the future Beautiful bespoke solutions for your home from Philip Whear Windows & Conservatories.

P

hilip Whear Windows & Conservatories is a unique Cornish company offering the full package of in-house design, manufacturing and installation in both timber joinery and uPVC, painting and aftercare service to its customers. Having started his business over 30 years ago, Philip Whear continues to drive his company forward, specialising in innovative design and top-quality installations. Philip and his team are proud of their ‘Made in Cornwall’ status. Over the years, the business has evolved by pushing the boundaries to produce ever more complex and challenging conservatories and orangeries to meet customer demand. When asked to convert a third floor rooftop terrace on a circular house into an enclosed conservatory, they took the bull by the horns and designed a bespoke structure. So, from round houses to green oak, the Philip Whear team are certainly not afraid of a challenge, but are equally at home fitting a standard bathroom window too, and can guarantee you’ll receive a top-quality installation. Painted conservatories stand out from the crowd of standard white uPVC and can give a period look or add interest to a modern design. So, when painting uPVC became possible, Philip Whear Windows & Conservatories led the way by installing a specialist paint booth to meet popular demand. Now with an unlimited range of colours to choose from, your dream can become a reality. Head over to Philip Whear’s new website to view many of the bespoke conservatories, orangeries, windows, doors and glass balustrades the team have designed and installed around Cornwall. For a full gallery to inspire you, Philip and the team invite you to have a tour of their factory, paint shop, joinery and showroom to see what they can do to enhance your home. The company works hard to reduce its carbon footprint by sourcing locally where possible, using FSC timber, and by recycling all glass, uPVC, timber and metal.

Look out for Philip Whear Windows & Conservatories at the Royal Cornwall Show, 9th to 11th June. Visit them there or pop into the showroom.

The Roundhouse, Porthcothan

Porthcothan on the north coast is one of Cornwall’s secret bays – a deep inlet surrounded by rocky headlands with a big expanse of sand at low tide. This tiny coastal village has a lovely hidden quality, remaining largely undeveloped, with an ‘away from it all’ feel. This is the Cornish coast for purists; it’s all about the gorgeous natural environment. The Roundhouse is a large detached house in a secluded countryside setting a short walk from the beach. Five big bedrooms and two spacious bathrooms make it ideal for larger families or friends sharing. Regroup after a day exploring on the beach in large farmhouse-style kitchen diner with double aspect windows looking out over fields and out to sea. Then decamp to the huge living room and warm up around the wood-burning stove. There’s plenty of outside space, making The Roundhouse great for children and dogs. Relax in the extensive private garden with its large lawn and furnished patio offering views over fields and the sea. Porthcothan beach is only a ten-minute stroll, where you can enjoy surf lessons. There are great facilities nearby including The Tredea Inn, a shop, and the South

West Coast Path for exploring the coast. A short drive takes you to Padstow, Watergate Bay or Newquay for shopping, family activities and all kinds of cafés, restaurants and pubs. 01637 861005 www.beachretreats.co.uk

Here’s the perfect cottage for a great British seaside holiday! è RIGHT Huge living room with wood-burning stove è RIGHT Large farmhouse-style kitchen diner

In prime top-dog position directly opposite the slipway on to the gently sloping beach, this handsome, Grade II listed house has fabulous ‘ships ahoy!’ views from its big Georgian windows looking out to sea from three storeys. Tall guests will need to duck (or grouse). Designed for smaller people in the days when Kingsand was a smugglers’ haunt full of mysterious hidey-holes, some doorways are low and the stairs winding up to the first three bedrooms are steep. Climb up again and you reach another ‘crow’s nest’ bedroom with sea views to enjoy even while soaking in the bathtub. Nirvana’s quirky original features are beautifully complemented by 21st century comfort, with a modern range cooker in the big kitchen-dining room, just right for sociable suppers, and a cosy woodburner to cosy down beside after coast path walks or strolls around nearby Mount Edgcumbe estate. Outside, a pretty courtyard with barbeque is a lovely setting for summer evenings, followed by an amble to the friendly pub nearby. Nirvana accommodates nine and welcomes pets in the kitchen and courtyard. 01647 434320 www.helpfulholidays.co.uk

A secret sanctuary The idea that every man should have his cave or shed has moved on, with the arrival of the Garden Hideaway.

I

“These are not mass-produced garden sheds or summerhouses but bespoke buildings built to each customer’s specific needs”

t all started with Calum White’s desire to have the perfect creative studio space away from the hustle and bustle of home life, more than just a shed. As a result he designed and built his first Hideaway, unveiled to great acclaim. Since then he’s been working in a north Cornwall barn with fellow craftsmen Richard, Nathan and Steve to create Garden Hideaways – extraordinary individual buildings that every garden should have. These are not mass-produced garden sheds or summerhouses but bespoke buildings built to each customer’s specific needs and designs, whether it’s a home office, garden room, family annexe or hobby retreat. Focussing on longevity, sustainability, quality and usability, the Hideaways are built to the highest standards as mobile ‘tiny cottages’ that are fully functional and complete in every way. The team’s desire is to create a unique, special space away from the main house that’s comfortable, welcoming and useful throughout the year, yet beautiful and gentle on the eye to complement any garden... and it works! The signature featherboard walls under a shingle roof means that the Garden Hideaway merges into any garden and becomes a special part of it! Until you’ve been inside a Garden Hideaway it’s impossible to really comprehend its unique quality of tranquillity and beauty. As Calum explains, “We love having visitors so we can

hear their first reactions. Spontaneous exclamations of ‘Wow!’ or ‘Gosh!’ are the usual responses that show the visual impact our Hideaways create on first sight.” The real secret to the superb quality of a Garden Hideaway is drinking lots of tea. As Calum admits, “We’ll all drink tea together several times a day. This gives us opportunity to constantly reflect, discuss and perfect the crafting of your Hideaway to make it special for you.” These bespoke retreats can be mobile or sited in your garden to suit your purposes, but consideration needs to be given to some factors. Firstly, how you want to use it? Perhaps, it’ll be a sewing or reading room, or maybe an office. Mostly though it’s about multiple uses. Also consider the amount and direction of sunshine in your garden and how much sun or shade you want in your tiny cottage. What you want to look at, or keep hidden from, in your tranquil moments? Your tiny cottage can have windows and doors in any elevation. Finally, do you wish to grow plants up and around your cottage? These give colour and scent in the summer, adding to the tranquillity of your space. So if you want something truly special for your garden, forget the shed idea, grab your teabag of choice and go meet Calum. You’ll be impressed.

A place by e sea Discover the many benefits of owning a luxurious holiday home nestled into the dunes at Perran Sands.

T

he idea of actually owning a caravan by the sea is quite a strange concept to a lot of people, the assumption being that you either buy a second home by the sea, or simply go on holiday for a week or a fortnight. But holiday home ownership at Perran Sands is the perfect way for you and your family to enjoy a seaside escape whenever you want – even your dog can come too! Chase away the stress, where the pace is relaxed and kids can be kids in a completely safe haven. With all your home comforts around you, and very few of the responsibilities, you can sit back and soak up the laid back atmosphere. Whilst Perran Sands boasts all the high-end facilities you would expect from a top park – indoor and outdoor pool, amazing eateries, on-site activities and more, what really sets it apart is the nature: the space, the acres of Sites of Special Scientific Interest land, the miles of golden beach and the pumping waves on your doorstep! Another wonderful touch is the strong community feel amongst the owners, with owners’ events and parties including wine clubs and a summer ball. Every month Perran Sands organise a free activity for owners at the weekend, often outdoors, from abseiling at Lusty Glaze cove in Newquay and canoeing at Golant near Fowey, to horseriding on the beach and bushcraft for the young ones. There are also leisure activities on site, including target shooting, archery, aqua jets, aqua gliders, a roller disco rink and a gym, as well as paddle boarding and a surf school for lessons or hire. Owner of five years, Richard Rabin, says: “To me the best thing about owning my caravan at Perran Sands is getting to the beach first thing in the morning as the sun is coming up and having the best waves to yourself.” What’s more, Perran Sands can sublet your holiday home when you’re not there, generating an income to offset the costs, making holiday home ownership more affordable. So what are you waiting for? Be the first to leave footprints in the sand!

In the limelight A new amphitheatre for Trebah Garden takes centre-stage this summer.

é MAIN Aerial view of the amphitheatre ê BELOW Guy Watson

H

idden away on the Helford estuary is the twenty-six acre retreat of Trebah Garden which houses a new attraction this year: an amphitheatre, built in the heart of the garden and seating an impressive three hundred people on its granite banks. It has had a huge amount of interest already from the visitors and local artists hoping to perform on its stage. Along with its original programme of events the amphitheatre welcomes a new team member, Guy Watson, who will be heading up this exciting adventure for the garden. We catch up with Guy to find out what he has planned for his first season in the open-air theatre. “Cornwall is all about being outdoors and being part of your surroundings and Trebah Amphitheatre, in this breathtaking setting, really celebrates that.” Passionate about what this venue could hold for Cornwall, Guy goes on to explain: “We’ve always had artists contacting Trebah and asking to use

the garden in some way for a performance or to explore a creative idea they have and so having a purpose-built theatre to host these events really puts Trebah on the map as a cultural centre for Cornwall.” “With so many artists contacting us this year, deciding on our 2016 season has been a real challenge. We really want to showcase some of Cornwall’s most talented individuals and companies but we’re also welcoming artists from further afield.” The inspiration for this exciting new project arose after the area was cleared of Rhododendron ponticum with a grant from the Forestry Commission several years ago. The amphitheatre was subsequently created within the natural ‘bowl’ at the top of the Chilean Coomb and fits well into the topography of the garden. This idea had been germinating for several years under the watchful eyes of the Garden Committee and the project has had phenomenal support from the local community, members and visitors who have watched its evolution with admiration and anticipation. Pleasingly, the project has mostly been funded by generous donations from a ‘Friends’ adopt a seat scheme’. There’s a real melting pot of shows happening at the amphitheatre in 2016 from family theatre and children’s storytellers to the Duchy Opera. There really is something for every visitor to Cornwall at Trebah this year.

Then the castle will come to life with the roar of thundering hooves, clashing lances and cheering crowds with a season of spectacular Grand Medieval Jousts every Tuesday and Wednesday (2nd to 24th August). Never too late to

change Many of us dream of a change of job and lifestyle, and it’s exactly what lovely, award-winning, garden designer Jo Midwinter has done.

catch up with Jo at her home overlooking the Camel estuary. If you’ve ever thought about employing a designer but always thought it might be rather intimidating – then Jo’s the person for you! She is warm, easy-going and bubbling over with enthusiasm for her career and lifestyle. Conversation flows easily over mugs of tea in her colourful kitchen, her golden retriever, Harry, at our feet. Jo explains with a huge smile: “I loved gardening from an early age and enjoyed creating gardens for myself, family and

friends. I always had a strong feeling for space and shapes. The way you can create a space to make you feel more comfortable, energised or tranquil. I had also fallen in love with Cornwall – especially around Padstow. We kept coming back to Cornwall for family holidays. Little did I know that one day I would actually be working in garden design and finally living in Cornwall right next to the Camel estuary!” It wasn’t quite as simple as Jo makes it sound – there was a lot of determination involved in realising her dream. First in 2006, a move from their home in

76 CORNWALL LIVING CLM 46--ED--Jo Midwinter RLS--2.00.indd 2

Leamington Spa where Jo worked in IT; to live in Okehampton, when her husband was offered a job nearby. Then with her children settled and working, Jo, with a huge leap of faith, gave up work and enrolled on a garden design course at Duchy College, Rosewarne. “It was finally time to do what I had always wanted to do.” Jo says with another huge smile. “But we were still living in Okehampton – so it was quite a commitment to take on the drive to Rosewarne in north west Cornwall, let alone the added cost! But…” another grin from Jo, “life has a habit of stepping in sometimes and it turned out that two other people on the course lived nearby, so we not only shared the car journey and cost, but also became firm friends. It was a real God send!” It’s obvious that Jo thrived. In her final year at college she was joint winner of the Society of Garden Designers’ (SGD) national student of the year award. “It was wonderful!” Jo exclaims. “Just being at the awards ceremony; meeting and being in photos with designers whose work I had been studying!” Then, last year she won an SGD professional award for the garden of a contemporary coastal home in north Cornwall. I ask Jo about her philosophy on garden design. “When I approach a garden I think about how it makes you feel and how you want it to feel. I think about creating the places where it’s good to sit and reflect, places that will encourage people to spend time together, places where there is a sense

of discovery and excitement and how the garden flows between each element. I want to create a garden that will tempt my clients outside as often as possible! I like to try and find the unique character of a garden. It’s my job to raise possibilities for the garden. And I do love coastal gardens, using robust plants that can withstand whatever the weather has to throw at them. I never want to leave clients with problem plants! At the back of my mind is always… how are they going to manage this in the future?” In any spare time she has Jo likes to go surfing “though I’m not very good! My son surfs too and has moved from London to Newquay, so now I see them a lot, which is an added joy. I run and walk the Camel trail, and I love wildflowers so I photograph any I find, and blog about them. Oh, and we enjoy eating out, particularly in relaxed restaurants like Gilmores in Newquay for Mexican food, it’s a little shack by the golf course, or Scott and Babs at Retorrick Mill.” I can imagine strolling round my garden, buffeted by the westerlies, talking with Jo. I love her approach of simple but exciting; of making spaces that will add to people’s lives, and her warmth and enthusiasm for the life she has made.

e c n e d fi n o c r Restore you Modern treatments for varicose veins available at Duchy Hospital.

A

round one third of adults will develop varicose veins at some point in life. Some feel apprehensive about seeking treatment because they remember friends or relatives having surgery. Treatment years ago used to involve ‘stripping’ the veins under general anaesthetic, followed by a long period of recovery, which could often be quite painful. The good news is that varicose vein treatment has changed radically since those days! Ken Woodburn, Consultant Vascular Surgeon of Duchy Hospital in Truro, explains: “Varicose vein surgery has now caught up with the minimally invasive revolution that has been going on in many other surgical areas. Almost all patients can now be treated with simple local anaesthetic ‘walk-in, walk-out’ keyhole treatments.” There’s a range of minimally invasive treatments now available at Duchy Hospital, all with the advantage of avoiding surgical incisions and general anaesthetic, enabling you to return to normal activities within a day or two of treatment. In 2013 endothermal ablation using radiofrequency (RFA) or laser (EVLT) was recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical excellence (NICE) as the first choice treatment. Since 2007, Mr Woodburn and his colleagues at Duchy Hospital have treated over 2000 patients using this technique. If your varicose veins are not ideal for RFA, or you don’t like the idea of local anaesthetic injections, Clarivein™ and Venaseal™ have been recently introduced. These methods only

require a single local anaesthetic injection, while having a success rate similar to RFA in studies carried out so far. All these new treatments are carried out in the day case treatment facility at Duchy Hospital using ultrasound guidance. Procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic, taking from 30 to 90 minutes depending on the complexity of the veins needing treatment. Immediately following treatment the patient is able to walk round to the recovery area and enjoy a cup of tea before heading home. The procedure can usually be undertaken within a few weeks, without having to stop any of your normal medications or give up food or drink beforehand. It’s recommended that you avoid driving on the day of treatment, but you should be able to return to normal activities, including most types of work, within 48-72 hours, although recovery may take a little longer. If you’d like to know more about the available options, you can either head to one of the regular free open events for a one-toone discussion and find out what would be suitable for you and the costs involved , or you can just book a full consultation if you prefer. You don’t need a GP referral. Who knows, perhaps it could soon be time to get those shorts out for summer!

S

o, this month I’m going to write about massage and cancer. Originally, I was going to discuss getting your skin ready for spring. However, I feel it’s vital to cover this important subject. The fact is that many spas turn people going through cancer away without providing treatment. This comes at probably the most important time when the power of touch is vital. Cancer can be isolating, frightening and stressful for both those diagnosed and also their loved ones. Massage promotes wellbeing, health and relaxation and is regarded as being beneficial for anyone going through stress and anxiety. But did you know that many therapists and spas are scared to massage people with cancer? Here are the facts: There is no clinical evidence to show that cancer is spread by massage. In fact, there is clinical evidence that massage may be hugely beneficial physiologically and psychologically. People diagnosed with cancer are covered by the DDA (Disability Discrimination Act). Refusing spa treatment is a contravention of this Act. (Thanks to the very lovely Verity Slater at Stephens & Scown along with Kathryn from RCH and Jacqui from Macmillan for reconfirming this.) We have been treating people with Massage Touch Therapy for nearly 15 years. When we created the very beautiful Head in Heaven™ Spa ritual, it was to ensure that we

enabled people to reach the parasympathetic level (meditative state) where cortisol reduces and serotonin is released which helps you relax, rejuvenate and heal. Many spas who work with us, including Budock Vean Hotel, The Greenbank and our own lovely Made for Life Spa at Una St Ives, offer spa treatments which are accessible to all. There are some great independent therapists who also do great work too. We have offered Touch Therapy to thousands of people who have visited us through the Made for Life Foundation for nearly a decade. It has been a sheer delight this month to launch our own CMA accredited three-day Cancer Touch Therapy course which has been developed through intensive research with experts in their field over a number of years. To find out more contact the Made for Life Foundation on 01326 221777 or madeforlifefoundation@gmail.com. The power of touch is astounding – it defines who we are. Gentle touch is good for the heart and soul.

When there’s a will

With the arrival of ‘Make A Will Week 2016’, why not leave a legacy to Cornwall Hospice Care?

W

hen David’s mum was taken in to a hospice it made a huge difference. She was given the specialist care and dignity she deserved at the end of her life and her family had, in their words, the weight taken off their shoulders. For Thelma, the move from a busy hospital to the sanctuary of a hospice was pivotal: “It was such an upsetting time for Mum and you really need to feel cared for when you’re dying. In the hospice they were so friendly and they had the time to give the specialist care she needed.” The care also extended to David. “I had a lot to deal with and I was very grateful for the support the hospice gave me. The team took the strain so I could concentrate on the person who mattered to me and that was Mum.” David who lives in Bude, never forgot the difference the hospice made and has pledged to leave a gift to Cornwall Hospice Care in his Will. “I really appreciate the work of hospices and Cornwall Hospice Care is a local charity, which particularly caught my attention.” David continues: “It’s so important to make a Will. Mum had and she had made arrangements for her funeral too, so I didn’t have to worry about any of that. I could spend time with her and prepare myself for her death. A Will ensures you leave your

affairs in order and that your wishes are respected after you’ve gone. You can also make sure those you want remembered are acknowledged. I’ve left a gift to Cornwall Hospice Care – will you?” Nearly a fifth of the money Cornwall Hospice Care needs to look after patients and their families comes from legacies. It means the Cornish charity can continue to make a difference to those facing the complex symptoms of life limiting illnesses at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell and St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle. Perhaps you’ll consider leaving a gift to Cornwall Hospice Care once you’ve remembered your family and friends? As they explain, “Our Make A Will Week allows you the opportunity to write or update your Will thanks to participating solicitors who are asking you to donate their fees to the charity.” It could make all the difference to someone you know.”

Smarter energy Never worry about your gas supply again with the introduction of the innovative CylinderWise service from Countrywide LPG.

T

he beautiful Cornish countryside – nothing beats it... rolling hills, fields of crops and pasture, and villages dotted across the landscape. The air is cleaner, the light quality is better – it’s no wonder so many love living in this part of the world. Of course, one challenge of living in more remote or rural areas away from the bigger towns or cities is that many of our homes aren’t connected to the gas network. So, having to rely on other energy sources to heat or power our homes, the solution is often bottled and bulk gas. The good news is that, following the recent acquisition of Cornwall Farmers,

Countrywide LPG, which has long supplied bottled and bulk gas to customers across the UK, has extended the area it covers in the south west. This development provides customers in Cornwall and Devon with a real alternative to their existing gas or oil supplier, through the network of 12 Cornwall Farmers’ stores. No matter where you live, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is an effective alternative for heating your home, hot water, real flame fires, cooking and even running your vehicle! Also, it can be conveniently stored as a liquid in a pressurised steel cylinder or tank. Countrywide has supplied LPG to homes,

88 CORNWALL LIVING CLM 46--ED--Countrywide Farmers--2.00.indd 2

businesses and the farming community for over 35 years. It’s this heritage that has led to Countrywide LPG becoming the largest independent supplier in the UK. With a qualified team of specialist engineers, installers and customer service advisors, the Countrywide LPG team are on hand to offer help, advice and process orders five days a week, supported by a 24hour helpline, open 365 days a year. Knowing that your cylinders are not likely to run out anytime soon, leaving you in the cold, is always a worry for those not on the mains network. But, let’s face it, fretting about your energy supplies is not the most exciting way to fill your time! We all have busy lives, with plenty of other things to be worrying about. That’s where smart technology comes into play. CylinderWise is a new innovation in the field of LPG cylinders. Essentially, it allows remote monitoring and management of your cylinders. For the first time LPG cylinders can be managed in the same way as a LPG bulk tank. Cylinders are typically hidden away out of sight, which may make you forget to check to see when you are using

your last bottle. CylinderWise removes this worry by automatically reporting to Countrywide LPG every day. When the builtin changeover unit switches sides an order will be scheduled for you. There are many benefits of this system, not least reassurance. Your cylinder supply will be managed remotely by experienced Countrywide LPG staff, avoiding extended delivery lead times during peak winter months. The equipment remains the property of Countrywide at all times, which means that if at any time it requires replacement, they will do so at no cost to you. Finally, you’ll enjoy full peace of mind with Countrywide’s 24/7 emergency out-of-hours service. Contact the team to arrange a convenient time for an LPG specialist to visit you and discuss your requirements and arrange an installation. Then sit back and relax knowing you’ll never need to worry about your energy supply again!

Advice

Peace

of mind

Appointing someone you trust to take decisions over your affairs should you become incapable of managing them is becoming increasingly popular.

W

ith life expectancy continuing to rise, we face new challenges and considerations. What happens if you become mentally incapable of managing your affairs? How will you pay your bills? Where will you live? As is so often the case, planning is by far the best option. “Drawing up Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) will give you peace of mind that your affairs will continue to be dealt with by someone that you trust”, says Tracey Wright, partner at Stephens Scown LLP. “You can appoint more than one attorney and even appoint replacement attorneys in the event of your preferred attorneys no longer being able to act for you. They can even act for you whilst you’re still capable of making decisions for yourself, so if you become physically frail or simply no longer wish to manage your finances this can be delegated to them. And while you are still capable and willing, you can continue to deal with your financial affairs for as long as you wish. It’s not a case of giving up your independence or the right to deal with your own affairs.” So who would make decisions about your medical treatment if you lost the capacity? “To ensure that it is people who are close to you, you can make a Lasting Power of Attorney for Health and Welfare. Your attorneys can only ever make these decisions for you if you lack mental capacity to do so yourself, and if you have good days and bad days then you would continue to make

these decisions on your good days but your attorneys could step in as required.” The Health and Welfare LPA is often overlooked but is a very important document and can even include the ability to make decisions regarding life sustaining medical treatment. Of course, some people prefer to remove this difficult question from their loved ones, leaving these decisions to be made by medical staff. If you live your life according to certain beliefs or like to deal with your affairs in a particular way, you can provide guidance either in the LPA document itself or in separate letters. Whilst it’s now possible to set up LPAs online, consider the advantages of having it set up professionally. Don’t overlook the benefit of impartial and experienced advice where you are open to discuss, for example, the concerns you might have about a particular child being appointed as attorney. Additionally, your attorneys will be aware that you sought legal advice on drawing up the documents and so are more likely to feel bound by its terms. Online may seem quick and easy, but face-to-face professional advice brings peace of mind. It is not just a form filling exercise. Contact Tracey if you have any questions or would like advice on LPAs.

ituated in a striking white marquee in the centre of the city, a temporary gallery brings inspirational works to the heart of the community, giving a unique opportunity to enjoy the highly creative and individual work made by emerging artists. This Way Up, the 11th annual exhibition of creativity by students from Truro College, promises to illuminate Truro’s Lemon Quay with a remarkable array of talent from students representing the creative scope offered by courses at the college; from Textiles to Graphic Design, Silversmithing & Jewellery to Fine Art, Ceramics to Product Design and Life Drawing to Photography. “Visitors to the exhibition will enjoy a wide range of work and will be challenged to look at things differently or from another angle: another way up!” explains Mark Dunford, Deputy Team Leader for Art and Design. “This Way Up refers to the artistic journeys that our students have embarked upon. They are discovering their own artistic directions within the creative industries.” Lucia House from Fowey plans to exhibit

a series of emulsion lifts at the show: “I think it’s a really good opportunity for the general public to see our work. It will be great to get a lot of recognition earlier on while we are still at college.” Alix Gallagher from Penzance, who is designing a brand and exhibiting handprinted clothing, says: “I’m really looking forward to This Way Up; the recognition will be good to start my career.” With current students having had their work selected by the Royal Society of British Artists for exhibition in London, and alumni studying at prestigious institutions including Bath University, Slade School of Fine Art, London School of Fashion and Edinburgh College of Art, it’s fair to say that there will be plenty of talent for you to discover at this year’s exhibition. Embrace the chance to discover genuine dedication to art and design as it is shared and celebrated with the community from 24th to 28th May.

Advice

The power of small

Nicola Hemsley, Headteacher of Bolitho School in Penzance, discusses the importance of choosing the right environment for your child’s early education.

ì ABOVE Not all lessons are confined to the classroom ê BELOW The impressive school grounds

T

he first and most important learning in a child’s life happens within the family. Children learn from the way people treat them and from what they see, hear and experience starting as soon as they are born. So choosing where your child is going to continue their learning and growing, when not in your care, is probably one of the most important decisions that you are ever going to make. “My first teaching position was in the outback of Western Australia, where I taught a class of two boys aged four and six”, explains Nicola Hemsley, Headteacher of Bolitho School in Penzance. “My previous experience of primary teaching was at a complete polar opposite, in a large state primary school in the UK, assisting classes of over 30. In a class of two, you may question if it is ‘good’ for the children. My experience would have me reply, absolutely! The one-to-

one attention, the tailoring of instruction to the individual, the time and the interaction that the small class allowed gave the boys a unique and superb start to their learning journey.” In fact, it has been proven many a time that, in smaller classes, students tend to be as much as one to two months ahead in content knowledge. “The two boys went on to success at senior school and are now, in their twenties, highly successful young adults.” At Bolitho Prep School, your child will be welcomed as a valued member of a small family, as Nicola explains. “Our classes are taught in spacious and light, purpose-built classrooms, where children are actively engaged, inspired and guided by outstanding teachers. We strongly believe that classroom learning is greatly supported by learning outside of the classroom and take every opportunity for our children to experience learning outside. Our extensive grounds offer every child the freedom to run, explore, interact and learn.” Bolitho Nursery and Prep School upholds an educational philosophy, which believes that educating the whole child is vitally important. “When we accomplish that, we equip a child for a lifetime of achievements”, says Nicola. The intimate, small class allows for that kind of teaching and learning to take place. The first few years of your child’s education are the most important – invest in them well.

Got to experience... THE MUSEUM OF WITCHCRAFT AND MAGIC

T

he Museum of Witchcraft and Magic (MWM) in the picturesque village of Boscastle contains the world’s largest collection of magical and witchcraft-related objects and books. The two floors of exhibition spaces contain a wide variety of objects and artworks, from curses to crystal balls, potions to Pagan beliefs. MWM attracts over 30,000 visitors a year and is a Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence Winner. There is a special focus on West Country beliefs and traditions, so go and discover how fishermen ‘bought the wind’ and where you can find sacred sites in this beautiful part of Cornwall. Alongside the fascinating permanent collection is a temporary exhibition space that explores different aspects of magic and witchcraft, ensuring that there’s always something new to see. This year there is an exhibition on the history of Halloween. There are also regular guided tours and a lively programme of talks. The library can also be visited by appointment. Check the website for further details.

tylehome is a home and interior design showroom with a difference. Stocking a wide range of designer brands, with inspired, cutting-edge design, it’s the place to go to make a real statement in your home. We catch up with Managing Director Mark Mitchell, who gives us a sneak preview of the latest products causing a stir.

Glas Italia (www.glasitalia.com) Glas Italia produces exquisite handcrafted glass furniture near Milan, featuring collaborations with some of the world’s most talented designers. The new ‘Shimmer’ range of tables and mirrors have an iridescent multichromatic finish, varying with the angle of light and vantage point. Mark says: “They really have to be seen to be believed. The glass appears to be one colour but casts completely different coloured shadows.” The range also includes a full suite of sliding, pivoting and pocket glass door systems. “We have them installed in our Studio as it is essential to touch and operate the doors in order to see the quality of their movement and manufacture. This is something completely new in Cornwall”

Designers Guild (www.designersguild.com) Designers Guild is another new collaboration with Stylehome. Their collections need little introduction and offer a broad and vast range of luxury furnishing fabrics, accessories and wall coverings. 2015 saw the addition of an extensive range of paints, rugs, as well as fabulous, unique furniture to the portfolio – all of which can now be viewed at the Stylehome studio.

Contempo Italia (www.contempo.it) Contempo is an Italian company whose philosophy’s cornerstones have always been ‘Made in Italy’ and craftsmanship, with an unmistakable style, blending design with comfort. “Today it’s sometimes difficult to know what is behind a brand name, but with Contempo you are guaranteed superb Italian quality at a price which is often lower than brands which carry Italian sounding names – but could be manufactured in the Far East!”

Luxaflex (www.luxaflex.co.uk) As well as new additions, Stylehome has strengthened its collaborations with existing brands, such as Luxaflex blinds. “We have a long standing relationship with Luxaflex, spanning over 16 years. They blend quality with a forward thinking approach. It’s not easy to design a new and completely original window treatment but with the Facette and Sillouette blinds Luxaflex have done just this. They’ve also best adopted the changes in Child Safety Legislation with innovative lifting systems for easy operation without the need for pull cords." “We are really excited about the newly added brands,” says Mark. “We only deal with the highest quality but this doesn’t have to mean a high price tag. Moving forward, Stylehome will continue to offer the highest level of service and a range that is different to any other store in Cornwall.”

tripes are back with a boom. And if you want to make a style statement in your home, then adding a striped fabric as a feature is a great way to do so. Sometimes the best thing to do is to keep it simple; from an understated base of neutral tones, introduce a textured fabric with a limited colour palette to create a feature focal point. Whether through a runner or rug on the floor, or sumptuous cushions on the sofas complemented by striped curtains, you can infuse a real sense of style! Roger Oates produces a fantastic range of stair runners, rugs and fabrics, perfect for achieving this look. Stripes along the floor can bring out the proportions of a room, adding a sense of depth through training the eye across the entire space. We love the flatweave, 100% wool runners, which are woven and hand-finished using traditional techniques right here in the UK. Whether going for a coastal look, with soft blues and sandy tones, or injecting a splash of colour with a warming red, they are fantastic for staircases and landings and look great finished with brushed chrome stair rods too. Roger Oates also produces bespoke designs, so that you can create a look that is completely unique to your home. Even better, these are all available right here in Cornwall from Bodmin Flooring Centre, along with a wide range of other products and designs for your home. Bodmin Flooring Centre also stocks the stunning, luxury vinyl tiles from Karndean and Amitco. You can get beautiful distressed oak beam effect or slate effect tiles without the associated maintenance – a convenient way to achieve a natural look and perfect for today’s modern living. Whilst looking around the showroom, why not have a look at the furniture too? Bodmin Flooring Centre stocks an incredible array of beds from trusted brands including Harrison Spinks, Silent Night, and Rest Assured. These luxurious and comfy beds will ensure you’ll always get a good night’s sleep. So, to kit out your home from ceiling to floor, make Bodmin Flooring Centre your next destination.

Style & sunsets Interior design company Iroka creates innovative spaces that express your unique identity and vision.

S

ince 2006, interior design company Iroka has designed and furnished some of the most exciting projects in Cornwall and beyond. Its designers can plan and furnish any type of property, offering a comprehensive design and project management service whether for a private home, or the retail, commercial, leisure and health industries. Lead Interior Designer Giorgi Holland explains the Iroka ethos: “Our designs are driven by you; expect highly personalised and bespoke designs like nothing else you’ve seen.” The team was briefed by its Hertfordshire based clients to create a modern, vibrant and yet relaxing interior scheme for a full fit-out of this five-star coastal holiday let in St Ives. To fully furnish this exquisite coastal retreat, Iroka included contemporary designer furniture from Italian brands such as Magis, Calligaris and current day rococo fabrics from French textile designers Casamance & Camengo. A varied palette of blues ranging from rich cobalts and vibrant turquoises to the everso-on-trend muted cornflower combine with opulent oranges and phosphorescent pinks in nautical stripes that echo the sea and sunsets of the vista below. In the entrance hall, a striking feature wall has been created using designer paint from Fired Earth in colour way ‘Mrs Booth’, cleverly combined with simple yet functional furniture to maximise the smallest space in any household. Leading onto the contemporary open-plan living area, featuring an ultra-

modern kitchen, a complementary dining set includes a burst of turquoise to stand out against the crisp white backdrop. In the lounge area a selection of textures create the feeling of comfort and relaxation. Iroka have used a linen/cotton mix in upholstery with touches of smooth velvet in the decorative cushions, combined with a chunky wool rug to add contrast to the super matte finish on all larger furniture. Textured velvet cushions offer the feeling of luxury while reflective metallic silver bedside lamps add a hint of glamour to the bedrooms. The oversized headboard in the master bedroom adds drama, while opulent Casamance curtains frame the balcony with its spectacular panoramic views of the sea and gorgeous coastline beyond. The stunning Magis Voido rocking chairs on the balcony mimic the form of ocean waves – the perfect spot for alfresco dining and soaking up the dramatic seascape views. Creative Director Luke Weller says: “We understand the importance of bespoke one-off pieces and our specialist team can bring imagination to reality.” He continues: “It’s about bringing the best in global design to Cornwall.” To see the results for yourself, Seasalt in St Ives is now available for bookings through Cornish Gems.

First impressions Transform the look of your home with a stunning, maintenance-free resin drive.

W

hether a beautiful traditional character property or an ultra chic contemporary pad, an unloved, shabby driveway can let the entire property down. After all, it’s the first thing you see as you approach it and, as we all know, first impressions count. Whether it’s your home, your office or maybe a stylish boutique hotel where guests come to enjoy some time away from it all, it’s amazing how a fresh, sharp drive can instantly transform the outside space. Not only does it say that this place is loved and cared for, it can also add considerable value to the property. So perhaps the time has come to bring back a bit more kerb appeal. And if you’re fed up of digging up weeds from the gravel then you can opt for something that’s completely maintenance free, which means more time for doing the things you actually want to do – like relaxing and enjoying the weather. We discovered the amazing resin drives from Oltco. The family-run business established in 2004 has swiftly become an authority on all kinds of resin flooring, both inside and out. With clients including Wembley Stadium, John Lewis and Jamie Oliver, you know you’re in good company. Director Johnny says: “Our pledge is to

establish lasting relationships with our customers by exceeding their expectations and gaining their trust through great products, performance and aftercare.” Resin gravel surfaces are extremely durable and hardwearing, and come in a range of finishes, from silver granite to autumn quartz. You can replicate the look of a traditional gravel drive, but without the associated issues of puddles and ice, loose gravel chips, and unwanted weeds. It’s UV stable and comes with a 10-year guarantee, so it’s an investment that will last. It’s versatile too, and can be used not only on drives, but also paths, walkways, surrounding swimming pools and playgrounds – it’s even used at heritage sites. Oltco’s solutions are also perfect for holiday homeowners, who want a hardwearing and safe outdoor area, which looks perfect all year round. The company has several handy products for decking too, to keep your outside space clean and safe.

J

o & Co Home is a family-run lifestyle store dedicated to sourcing the finest interior design pieces, bespoke gift ideas and luxury beauty brands for their discerning customers – a wonderful combination of friends from the local area and visitors from further afield, heading west for a dose of sea air on the Cornish Riviera. Established in December 2014 by Jo Eldridge and her husband Tom, the concept for the shop sprung from the couples’ own ambitious renovation projects of property in the area. ‘Bodhi’s Beach Hut’ became a surprise hit on Airbnb and they soon found that their guests were asking them for interior design tips, keen to recreate the luxurious, laid-back version of contemporary coastal living in their own homes. With this in mind, all of the products in the store are handpicked and thoughtfully sourced, and Jo’s eye for style pairs modern young designers with collections from more established labels, such as Sophie Conran and Linum. Conveniently situated on the Atlantic

Highway between Padstow and Wadebridge and next door to the awardwinning Strong Adolfo’s Cafe, the newly renovated shop is beautifully light and airy, and full to the brim with desirable objects, household staples and statement furniture pieces; plus new offerings from BKR, Cowshed and Wanderlust Life. With a wide range of products and a growing list of exciting new suppliers, Jo & Co Home offers the discerning design fan an irresistible aesthetic to recreate in their own space. A new online shop will be launching soon, making it even easier to peruse the latest interior trends and homewares in the comfort of your own home.

Create your perfect home, making the best use of available space with Rozen.

S

torage is such an important consideration when designing and improving our homes. We all have those special possessions that we like to have on display and take pride in, whereas others need to be stored and accessed as and when required. So we really need both display and storage solutions for our home. Rozen’s designers are expert at finding solutions to your storage woes. If space is at a premium in your home, you could consider utilising alcoves, a corner in the hall, under stair space or on the landing. Seating in a bay window can incorporate storage. Beds can incorporate storage drawers. If you don’t want your flat screen TV on display it can drop down into a piece of furniture, such as a sideboard in the lounge or an ottoman in the bedroom. With some creative thinking, you can get the maximum use of your available space. Whether built in or freestanding, Rozen can make attractive, practical display and storage solutions that will improve and enhance your home. If you like the clean lines of the minimalist look then a great idea is to create ceiling-to-floor fitted cupboards. You don’t even need to have handles on the doors if you use a push opening system. Your storage space

becomes virtually invisible and you can keep that beautiful contemporary look with your possessions accessible yet hidden from view. The same principle can be applied to the home office. With more and more of us working from home, why not incorporate the home office into your living space? With considered design, you can create useful office space that can be opened up or folded away as desired. Your tailormade office can be constructed in a style that complements your home. Your office furniture could be moveable or built-in. All your needs can be accommodated, including telecoms and lighting. It’s not just our living areas that seem to need a declutter. The same consideration needs to be given to the kitchen area. If you’re fortunate to have enough floor space, you could consider incorporating a walkin larder into your new scheme. It may be an idea from the past, but it’s a welcome resurgence in today’s world. Not forgetting the utility room of course. Great idea if you have dogs, an area for coats, boots and a space between outside and in for cleaning up before entering. Incorporate a laundry area, freeing up space in the kitchen. A well thought out

design here that can incorporate storage and your practical needs will make life just that little bit easier. Display requirements also need addressing. Many of us have hobbies or are collectors and like to see our treasured possessions on display. You may have imagined how you would position your collection in the room, how you would like it illuminated. Talk to Rozen and take a look at what the team have created for other clients. The hand-built model boat now displayed on a hand-built hall table set in a glass display case. The model steam train incorporated into a home library. A period cabinet to display a muchloved china collection. Give Ian Cox at Rozen a call if you want to discuss ways of creating display or storage in your home. No project is too small. They are happy to make one-off furniture pieces or a built-in project.

Natural y t u a e b Aspen & Ash brings a slice of homegrown Cornish heritage for your floor, with beautiful Cornish oak.

è RIGHT Quality wooden flooring adds a timeless quality to any room

W

hether contemporary or traditional, beautiful wooden flooring can transform a home, providing a sense of warmth and individuality from the textures and grain of the wood. This natural material can be contrasted against chic ultra modern furnishings or used to complement period features to great effect. Even better if you can secure beautiful wood from a local, sustainable source. The enterprising wooden flooring company Aspen & Ash has added to its superb range of wooden floors by securing close ties to the famous Tregothnan Estate in Truro enabling the company to procure the estate’s beautiful English Oak. Tregothnan, one of the largest estates in the UK, is renowned for its range of premium British grown teas. The oak which is superbly grained and many centuries old is coming to the end of its natural life and is set to be highly prized by both Cornish homeowners seeking some sustainable, home-grown and quintessentially Cornish heritage and further afield in London where interior designers have been wowed by its quality, style and provenance. To add to its sustainable credentials the oak is dried and the floors manufactured exclusively in Redruth meaning it can be offered for sale direct to the public, along with Aspen & Ash’s extensive range of new engineered flooring and heritage floors manufactured from old reclaimed timbers. A family-run business specialising in bespoke joinery and high-end kitchens, Peter Randles returned to his native Cornwall to establish Aspen & Ash and to cater for the rising popularity of wooden floors and the unbeatable warmth, character and value they add to interiors. Aspen & Ash will be at The Cornwall Home & Lifestyle Show on the 30th April and 1st May at the Royal Cornwall Showground, in Wadebridge.

Bring the indoors out Get your garden ready for the summer with a visit to Woodstock Hardwood Flooring.

A

s the nights once again begin to draw out we can begin looking to the balmy evenings of summer spent relaxing in the garden, and nothing quite brings the indoor-outdoor living theory to life than stepping out onto a deck. Modern decking often consists of various timbers and composite materials. As Cornwall’s hardwood specialist, Woodstock deals primarily in hardwood decking, though composite products containing no wood at all are becoming more popular. The hardwoods used for decking are not the regular timbers used for highend joinery and furniture crafting that Woodstock is known for supplying. Instead, they use dense, tropical, oily timbers with exotic names such as Yellow Balau, Massaranduba and Ipe, whose properties make them extremely durable and ideally

suited to an outdoor environment. Most hardwood decking is available in three profiles: reeded with small ridges to aid drainage in wet weather, grooved or castellated with wide ridges, or simply smooth with hidden fastenings, eliminating unsightly screws and making for an immaculate finish. For a company primarily obsessed with timber, it may come as a surprise that Woodstock has opted to stock composite decking containing no wood at all. But the quality and finish impressed the team so much, they couldn’t resist! The materials used for these are moulded from oak floorboards and are available in a number of colour schemes from limed oak to charred black, and can be installed to make your deck appear to flow fluently from inside your home and into the garden beyond. Perhaps the leading advantage of using composite materials is the lack of maintenance required to keep them looking new, needing as little as a scrub with soapy water. As well as decking, Woodstock supplies oils and maintenance products to keep your deck in peak condition, so nothing is left to chance when it comes to achieving your dream of an indoor-outdoor summer.

charge), removing all the usual hassle of buying a new dishwasher. Making sense out of all the different brands, products and features can be a challenge but it’s important to find products from a reliable brand at a price that suits you. Energy efficiency and eco-friendly technology are at the forefront of product innovations and some of the latest dishwashers can do a full cycle using less than nine litres of water, which is less than it takes to do washing up the conventional way. Some of the higher end products even operate at less than 40db, ensuring any living space is peaceful even with the dishwasher running. We take a look at three popular machines from Bosch, AEG and Miele which cater for all budgets.

This dishwasher comes with an ultra-quiet and efficient direct drive motor, which operates at 38db noise level. The latest Truesteam technology ensures the product can remove the toughest stains while still gently cleaning even the most delicate dishes.

s Amanda Winwood notes this month on her health and wellbeing page, the power of massage should never be underestimated. Massage has the power to relax, rejuvenate and even help the healing process, and it can play in important role in easing the daily challenges associated with facing cancer. With this in mind, Made for Life Foundation, a charity which helps individuals and families across Cornwall affected by cancer, enlisted Beverley Brooks as its selected massage therapist. Beverley is qualified at the highest level recognised in the UK, and has a completely dedicated approach to each individual client, offering a variety of techniques from a relaxing remedial massage to an advanced clinical massage. Beverley also works closely on post-operative and post injury scar tissue release and rehabilitation. Beverley works in the Made for Life treatment room at the Innovation Centre, Truro, on Fridays, and treatments are also offered at all other times in St Columb Major. She offers a completely dedicated professional approach to each individual client.

Massage treatment for those who are on their cancer journey, no matter at which stage, is discussed when she first meets you and together it’s agreed just what approach is best for you at that moment. While she takes her work seriously and respects the needs of her clients, there’s always room for laughter and a light-hearted approach when appropriate. The massage can be deeply relaxing or it can target an area of pain or discomfort. Beverley is happy to chat to you before booking, especially if you’re unsure about what to expect. To speak to Beverley personally, to discuss your requirements, call her directly on 07785 926130 or visit: www.mybreathingspace.co.uk Treatments at the centre are offered at a discounted rate and are available to anyone who has been diagnosed or is recovering from cancer.
