appy New Year! Christmas is now behind us and we’re embarking on a brand-new decade. To help prepare you for it, this month’s cover feature (page 18) has everything you need to enjoy a day of well-being, stressing the importance of taking some ‘me’ time and allowing yourself to relax and recharge. Continuing with that theme, we catch up with Wadebridge Dental (page 31), MEDfacials (page 32) and the Lifestyle Doc (page 35), who each offer up their own ideas of how you can build the drive and confidence needed to take on the year ahead. We also catch up with some of Cornwall’s best home and interior brands (from page 36) to help those of you embarking on home improvement projects, then for anyone who’s decided to take their 2020 holiday in Cornwall, from page 55 we have a wealth of fabulous Cornish stays to peruse. Add to all of this a window into Cornwall’s best artists and galleries (page 53), the latest news and Gourmet gossip (9, 63), plus a whole host of incredible Cornish prizes up for grabs (page 69), and our first issue for 2020 has everything you need to beat those January blues! Happy reading!

Sell your house in any market!

New Year, new home? Wondering if now is a good time to market your property? If this sounds like you, My Place in Cornwall offer some tips to give you the best chance of a sale. It’s no good marketing your house if the front looks tired and unloved, so the first tip is to work on that kerb appeal! Next is to get the price right first time it’s so important to get the marketing price right from the start, to generate viewings from the off. You should always use professional photography; as they say, a picture paints a thousand words. Finally, be

sure to choose a good agent – don’t just opt for the cheapest. When it comes to selling your home, you really do get what you pay for! For more advice and to book a free market appraisal, head to the My Place in Cornwall website. For more information call 01208 813874 or visit www.myplaceincornwall.co.uk

You’ve got to love this day bed!

A versatile addition to the home, this day bed (pictured) – handcrafted by The Cornish Bed Company – is a comfortable sofa during the day and an extra bed by night. Perfect for the spare room, or as a space-saving addition to a teen’s bedroom, it offers exibility and style with greater comfort than a standard pull-out sofa bed. The featured bed is from the Pencarrow range, which takes its inspiration from the traditional metal beds of the Victorian era, and the spectacular Pencarrow House, which lies on the outskirts of Bodmin Moor.

Each day bed is handmade by highly experienced artisans in the company’s foundry in Par; visitors are welcome, simply give the team a call to arrange a visit! For more information call 01726 825182 or visit www.cornishbeds.co.uk

Free learning

path launched Initiated by The Cornwall End of Life Education Group, the free learning path and passport is an accessible education route for staff who are committed to delivering excellent care to patients at the end of life. The learning passport has been developed to guide and support staff working in primary, secondary and social care. It is an electronic learning path supported by a handheld passport which provides a platform for discussion and evidence of the learning achieved. Cornwall Hospice Care’s Education Lead, Deb Thomas, tells us: “The idea is to combat the significant geographical and logistical issues staff face in Cornwall when trying to attend training. After completion of the path and passport, users are invited to discuss their experience with their local End of Life Lead/Link Buddy, after which they are given a badge to celebrate their success.” For more information call 01726 839156 or visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk/education

German kitchen?

A true handleless kitchen creates a linear, uniform and sophisticated look, which complements contemporary kitchen design. Olivia at Kitchen Kit tells us: “Our two quality German kitchen brands, Nobilia and Ballerina, build a handleless kitchen in a very clever way so that it blends seamlessly into your overall design.” Of course, handleless kitchens are not really without handles. The ergonomically shaped recessed rail handles are perfectly positioned on the carcass to enable comfortable access to doors, drawers and pull-outs. This unique design enables you to add LED strip lighting under the worktops to create a luxurious ambience.

To see this style in person, visit the Kitchen Kit showroom on Threemilestone Ind Estate, where the stunning kitchens are on display with live appliances. For more information call 01872 255990 or visit www.kitchenkitsw.com

They can be put up virtually anywhere, and we have worked in some breathtaking winter wonderland settings. Achieve your goals

through relaxation Dance has long been recognised as therapeutic, which is why Khalid Beg – instructor at St Ives’ Institute of Endrian Yoga believes firmly in the benefits of yoga dance.

Turn your walks into workouts with Instepp®

When ex PE teacher, Julie Ford, overcame breast cancer she realised that the gym wasn’t where she wanted to be. She wanted to be out walking by the ocean but although walking fulfilled her aerobic exercise requirement, it didn’t provide the resistance training that she needed. However, instead of returning to the gym she decided to develop a product that allowed her to combine aerobic and resistance training. This product is Instepp®. Instepp® allows you to get out and about with resistance bands and train your whole body anywhere, meaning you can trade in those gym days for a walk along the coast and still receive a vigorous and enjoyable workout. Julie tells us: “Beating cancer and starting the business in my 60s has been so exciting – I just want everyone to feel as good as I do with Instepp®!” For more information call 07967 791533 or visit www.instepp.co.uk

Endrian, which derives from a Sanskrit word meaning ‘all the senses, anything you can experience’ and ‘energy in the organs’, is the name given to this particular yoga discipline, which Khalid teaches in order to help rekindle youthful movement. Being a master healer and ualified inesiologist, halid’s understanding of muscle and movement puts him in prime position to help you improve your balance and co-ordination, but not just that. Endrian yoga will also encourage you to exist in the moment and

to focus, giving you a raised level of mindfulness that will stay with you long after the class has finished. So if you could use a boost – be it mental or physical – why not try Endrian yoga for yourself? For more information call 01736 757919 or 07979 606851

WORDS BY

BETHANY ALLEN

A

fter so much time with family and friends over Christmas, it’s not surprising that many of us get the January blues. Winter has set its teeth in; the festivities are over and we have another three months to wait until it’s socially acceptable to spend the entire day consuming chocolate. Which is why I’ve put together this guide for a day utterly dedicated to rejuvenation – to sort out those January blues and help you start the new year on a high.

A great morning After a good eight-hour sleep, wake up with a hot reviving shower and apply a rejuvenating layer of organic Beyond moisturiser (www. beyondorganicskincare.com). Made with a combination of plant extracts, bio active ingredients, omegas and vitamins, Beyond will replenish your skin ready for the day ahead. Wrap your favourite robe around MAIN Get in the sea this year

you and wander into the kitchen for your morning coffee, my go-to is Cornish Coffee’s ‘The Original Blend’ – a smooth and wellrounded coffee that’s hand roasted and produced in Cornwall by the Cornish Tea & Coffee Company. Look out for more in the next edition of the magazine, where we will find out everything there is to know about the Cornish Tea & Coffee Company (www.cornishtea.co.uk). Starting your day with exercise is one of the best things you can do for your body, it kicks you into action and gets the blood owing as well as producing feel-good hormones and endorphins, which are sure to put you in a positive mood for the rest of the day. Whether you head to your local gym or do a class, getting into a high gear will help you focus and release any pent-up stress, reducing anxiety, increasing energy levels and boosting your metabolism.

If you don’t know where to start, then personal training could be the answer, allowing you to get a game plan together for the new year. Whether you’ve been to the gym hundreds of times, or never – working with a personal trainer is incredibly beneficial. You can learn the correct techniques and create targeted workout plans to reach your goals, as well as gaining useful advice on nutrition. A personal trainer I’ve come across time and time again is Johnny Lawrence PT (www. johnnylawrencept.com). Renowned for his kind and encouraging approach, Johnny is based in Perranwell and strives to help his clients make the changes necessary to achieve a more balanced lifestyle. With a private gym space located within the grounds of his home and more than 12 years’ experience, Johnny provides a tailored service that revolves around his clients’ lifestyle. “I consider myself a people centred trainer,” explains Johnny. “My whole philosophy is that if I can understand the person and the way that they live and behave then we can start putting in place a programme that makes it easy for them to achieve their goals.” If you prefer to exercise outdoors, Fitness Wild (www.fitnesswild.com) provides personal training and group workouts next to Argal Reservoir. We hear from trainer Jimmy who tells us: “At Fitness Wild we’re passionate about a healthy lifestyle that involves getting outside and enjoying the beautiful county we live in. Exercising outdoors has been proven to boost mood and self-esteem, lower blood pressure and push you closer to peak performance. Not to mention there’s also a brilliant onsite café, Wild Vibes.”

Another great way to exercise outdoors – especially here in Cornwall – is to get in the sea. Don’t let the winter chill put you off, there’s nothing as invigorating as immersing yourself in Cornwall’s cool waters, yearround. Something that Porthleven’s Salty Sisters know all too well. We hear from Salty Sisters founder, Pippa Renyard, who tells us: “Last year I started swimming before work to remind myself that the sea and the natural landscape was bigger than anything I would face that day. It’s a really grounding thing to do at the start of the day and it provides a wonderful combination of exhilaration and utter calm! To get in the sea before work, while most people are still waking up and barely starting their day, makes me feel like I’ve done something brave and empowering, which definitely puts me in a very positive mood for the rest of the day. I started to let people know when I would be going, and one morning in March (2019) a group of four other women joined me for the first time. The Salty Sisters were born! Through word of mouth more and more people started to join us and we now have a core group of around 15 regular swimmers.” ( Salty Sisters Sink or Swim).

If not in the water, getting on the water is another great way to stay active this year. Simon Osborne, CEO of the Helford River Children’s Sailing Trust says: “All research points to the fact that there are huge benefits to being by the sea. Sailing is a great leveller it’s exercise for the body and mind. You have to learn to read different sea states, wind directions and understand the marine environment; you learn team work and leadership and it becomes more physically demanding as you progress to sailing in faster boats.” (www.hrcst.org.uk)

A relaxing afternoon

BELOW Healthy food awaits at Archie Browns

After your chosen workout there’s nothing better than heading to your favourite café to feed your tired muscles. A personal favourite of mine is The Pier Café in Falmouth ( thepierfalmouth). It provides delicious, nutritious food that will satisfy your hunger pangs alongside its spectacular setting overlooking Falmouth Harbour, with the added option of a stroll through Falmouth afterwards. Alternatively, head to Archie Browns (www.archiebrownscornwall.co.uk) in Truro or Penzance to get your healthy food fix for the day. Archie Browns was founded with the ethos to lead a healthy lifestyle, comprised of a growing team who are passionate about fuelling the community with healthy produce, many of whom have received training in naturopathy, homeopathy, nutrition and herbal medicine.

When your hunger has been satisfied, it’s time to spend your afternoon winding down, and a soothing massage is the perfect way to do so. We hear from Spa Manager at St Michaels Resort, Lucy Spingo, who tells us: “Massages help to boost our overall wellbeing by carrying a host of both psychological and physical benefits. Not only can they reduce muscle tension, boost the immune system, improve circulation and improve skin tone, they also help reduce the body’s level of cortisol – known as the stress hormone. Those who come for a massage are likely to leave feeling relaxed and rejuvenated, whilst experiencing an improved quality of sleep and a reduction in stress and anxiety. It can help boost your mood too, thanks to the release of ‘happy hormones’ – dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin and endorphins.” Equally, a swim, steam and sauna is a great way to detox and unwind. Or, for the ultimate indulgence, why not invest in your own personal hot tub?

And a cosy evening The Danish know what’s what when it comes to getting cosy and have designated the word ‘hygge’, to describe the mood of cosiness and comfortable conviviality combined with feelings of wellness and contentment. The concept revolves around creating a warm and comforting environment during the cooler months so that you look forward to cosy nights in or days spent snuggled up on the sofa when it’s raining outside. Big knitted blankets, scented candles and a hot drink are all elements of ‘hygge’, and surrounding yourself with these things is the perfect way to end your day of wellbeing.

We discover the benefits of filling your home with the warmth of a lighted candle from Sarah at St Eval Candle Company (www. stevalcandlecompany.co.uk), where candles are hand-poured using traditional, artisan methods on their farm in north Cornwall. “Find a comfy spot, light your favourite candle and relax, allowing your senses to be filled with uplifting scents inspired by nature. Bring in the new, refresh and reinvigorate with our uniquely scented Sea Salt candle or try Bergamot and Nettle candles for a burst of citrus with healing herbs. To unwind, light our little pot of tranquillity for a blissful, calming scent sensation.”

ith beautifully maintained private gardens and grazing land running to around five acres – just a mile from the surf and sand at Mawgan Porth – Sea Breezes is in prime position for exploring the north coast. But that’s not to say that all your days will be spent outside; the indoor heated swimming pool is a seriously tempting prospect, particularly on those stormy days when a dip in the ocean loses its appeal! There are also two garages – ideal for a car collection – and a workshop, which is perfect for hobbyists in need of space to hone their craft. With two reception rooms and three double bedrooms – including a master en suite – there’s ample space here for a family to spread out. In the kitchen you’ll find plenty of light-filled space and all the appliances you’re likely to need to cook up your own winter storm. The best part is that you can do so whilst drawing on ingredients grown in your own productive veg garden! In the summer, friends and family simply won’t be able to resist paying you a visit, spending their days on the sands of Mawgan Porth, surfing and building castles, before heading out for the evening to one of the area’s many celebrity owned restaurants. Characterful, charming and immersed in stunning surroundings, Sea Breezes is the kind of home that rarely finds its way to market.

CARING FOR SMILES

The multi-award-winning Wadebridge Dental Practice has scooped another two impressive wins in two National Awards.

I

n October this year Dentist Andrew Taylor was awarded with a certificate of merit by the British Dental Association for his services to dentistry. The following month, at the National Dentistry Awards 201 , Wadebridge Dental picked up the title for ‘ est Patient Care’ and at the Private Dentistry Awards in December they were awarded with ‘Most Improved Practice’ in the south. The practice covers all aspects of dentistry with its 10 strong dentist team, and is boldly leading the way into a new era with its latest state-of-the-art e uipment and interior styling. wned and run by husband and wife team Andrew and Melissa Taylor, they tell us We are incredibly proud of our whole team and owe these awards to them for their hard work and dedication to providing the best care for our patients. The team s dedication to their patients and their commitment to leading the way in dentistry is undeniable and is backed by a whole host of finalist places, including a previous win for ‘ est Practice’ and a commendation for Andrew in the ‘Dentist of the Year’ category at the Dental Awards 201 . It’s also backed by the patients who Wadebridge Dental treat we’ve done a little digging and found this review from Richard owler, alongside a multitude of

other positive reviews After returning to Cornwall I was unable to find an NHS dentist, however after joining Wadebridge Dental, I would never return to NHS treatment. My gums and teeth are the healthiest they have ever been and since I joined 12 months ago, both my wife and father in law have joined based on my recommendation. It’s clear to us here at Cornwall Living that Wadebridge Dental has gone from strength to strength over the last couple of years, with the practice providing exceptional patient care whilst also offering all aspects of dentistry and facial aesthetic treatments under one roof. To book a free consultation or to find out about the treatments that Wadebridge Dental offer, including Dental Implants, Teeth Straightening, Invisalign, Cosmetic Dentistry, General Family Dentistry and Facial Aesthetics, make sure to visit the Wadebridge Dental website or call to speak to a member of their friendly and knowledgeable team.

THE POWER OF SCIENCE MEDfacials offer tailor-made, targeted solutions to help you achieve healthy looking skin. ABOVE Delivering effective skincare solutions BELOW For those problem areas

L

ed by Dr Joachim Stolte and his specialist team of practitioners, MEDfacials is Cornwall’s trusted aesthetic skin and hair care clinic. “Our experienced team of doctors and aesthetic practitioners deliver safe, targeted and effective aesthetic and skin care treatments,” says Dr Stolte. “This includes IPL Laser, ProMax, lipo, Tixel, chemical peels, dermal fillers, otox, PD Thread Lifts and other skin care procedures. Allowing you to get the results you deserve in a safe, professional, clinic-based environment.” It’s a scientific fact that the human body naturally stores fat, however the distribution of fat around the body is also down to genetics, Dr Stolte tells us. Meaning that some of us have ‘problem areas’ where no matter how much we exercise, it simply doesn’t budge. This is more common in women, however, men can also struggle with the same issue. Let’s say you pay attention to a healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly and eating a balanced diet, yet that one pad of fat that troubles you most will not disappear. If this sounds familiar and you want to eradicate the area once and for all, MEDfacials have an impressive solution. Aqualyx is a safe and effective fat dissolving treatment that can be used all over the body, including: around the

chin, thighs, waist, stomach, knees, hips and armpits. It involves an injection that targets the area from the inside in combination with external ultrasound. With visible results after your first few treatments, you can finally get rid of those problem areas and get the results you’ve been dreaming of. ut how does A ualyx work? The treatment contains a fat dissolving substance, it is virtually pain free and contains an additional local anaesthetic. Immediately after the injection, external ultrasound can be applied for 10 minutes. On average it takes between three to five appointments within three-week intervals to see results and the treatment itself takes just 45 minutes. So, if you want to get rid of that problem area once and for all, or if you’re interested in the range of other treatments then make sure to get in touch with the MEDfacials team and discuss your options today.

e l y t s e f i l r u o y Cornwall is the perfect place to benefit from lifestyle medicine; we can connect with the beautiful outdoors whilst exercising, and our local produce is second to none.

S

afe and effective, lifestyle medicine focuses on sleep, nutrition, exercise and stress reduction to improve health and wellbeing. After 20 years as a GP, Cornishman Dr Mark Crouse set up LifestyleDoc, a private lifestyle medicine practice in Truro, dedicating his time to helping people get the most out of their lifestyles. “As a doctor,” he tells us, “nothing feels more satisfying to me than seeing a patient taking control of their health condition with lifestyle change, rather than relying on medication.” Zoe Crouse trained as a nurse before completing a degree in Health Promotion. She now works as a fitness instructor and health coach. She tells us: “I get a huge kick out of seeing people get more confident, more mobile, fitter and happier as a result of my input and support.” LifestyleDoc offers appointments, health coaching, one-to-one Pilates and fitness classes. Zoe tells us about Mrs B (not her real name). Juggling a stressful, sedentary job and busy family life, her exercise was limited to occasional walking. Meal choices were restricted by the rest of her family and prep time and she was concerned that she was drinking too much every week.

“Mrs B was fed up with feeling frumpy, tired and guilty and she certainly did not need a lecture,” Zoe explains. “She already wanted to change her lifestyle but previous attempts had failed because they were not sustainable and made her feel more miserable.” “Investing time to really listen is crucial to understand what makes clients tick and to be able to provide tailored solutions that work for their individual situation,” Mark adds. “People often need help to allow themselves to use positive motivators rather than negative ones and to be more selfish when it comes to improving their wellbeing.” After completing her course Mrs B said: “I feel really proud of my achievements to date… I am much more confident, have more energy and I am in total control of my food choices now.” Mark finishes Habits and obstacles like [Mrs B’s] are all very common but people still feel embarrassed talking honestly about their lifestyle. Please don’t let that get in your way.” If you would like to arrange a free assessment to see if Mark and Zoe can help you, be sure to get in touch with LifestyleDoc.

Convert your Aga or Rayburn to electric and enhance your energy savings, with help from Cornish Cooker Conversions.

 ABOVE Gain control over your energy bills with an Energiser Rayburn or ElectricKit Aga conversion

Cornish Cooker Conversions is an independent business and in no way connected to AGA, AGA Rayburn or AGA Rangemaster Ltd. It provides services relating to the product known as an ‘ AGA’ and recognises and acknowledges all trademarks and patents in relation to the AGA product.

S

aving money on energy bills is surely something we can all get on board with, and doing so by eliminating your reliance on fossil fuels is a sure-fire way of future proofing how you heat your home. ne Cornish company that understands the importance of this is Cornish Cooker Conversions. By designing conversion kits for your range to be converted to electric from fuels like oil, gas and solid fuels, you can make your range more e cient and environmentally friendly thanks to independent hob and oven control, gaining the exibility re uired to control when your hobs are on and when they’re not. The energy-saving benefits speak for themselves, and it’s no surprise that demand has led to the development of the Energiser Rayburn conversion kit – an innovative product that’s proving every bit as successful as the Electric it Aga conversion, but designed to fit the majority of Rayburn models. Cornish Cooker Conversions is often contacted by owners of Rayburns that have either had major mechanical breakdowns or fuel issues that can’t be resolved. In many cases, these issues leave Rayburns being uneconomical to repair, especially because the parts are often di cult often impossible to source. Whichever Aga or Rayburn model you use to heat your home, explains Cornish Cooker Conversions Co-Director, Alan Jackson, by

converting to electric, we give your cooker a new lease of life, making it more economical and environmentally friendly.” Indeed, conversion is by-far preferable to scrapping your stove, which comes with the added angst of disruption to your kitchen and the unwelcome cost of a new cooker. Conversion of your range cooker takes just one day, and the work is carried out in-situ. It allows you to retain the warmth that your range emits into your kitchen, and gives you peace of mind that you’re using a more costeffective, environmentally friendly fuel to heat your home. The control panel makes it easy to choose how much warmth you want and when, ultimately giving you control over your energy bills whilst retaining the traditional warmth and aesthetics that make these ranges so appealing. To see for yourself the projects that the Cornish Cooker Conversions team have worked on simply head to the company’s Facebook page.

A GROUNDBREAKING YEAR  MAIN A flawless finish with Oltco

INSET Tom and Johnny

I

t’s been a year of highs for Oltco; the company has transformed hundreds of outdoor spaces, introduced an incredibly innovative new product – ‘Recycle Bound’ –and won a string of prominent awards. All of this, as well as becoming the o cial environmental partner for the 2019 and 2020 UK Pro Surf Tour’s ‘Clean Breaks’ initiative. The ‘Clean Breaks’ initiative will see both Oltco and The UK Pro Surf Association work towards instigating positive change for the environment by taking an active role in cleaning up the oceans and beaches around the UK’s coastline. Johnny Pearce, Co–Director of Oltco comments: “The partnership between Oltco and The UK Pro Surf Association is an important one for both organisations. Becoming the

o cial environmental partner is a powerful way of raising awareness about single use plastic in Cornwall and the rest of the UK.” To sum up an all-round impressive year, Oltco received the South West ‘Disrupter of the Year’ award at Natwest’s prestigious Great British Entrepreneur Awards 2019. This category recognises purpose driven pioneers of change and tenacious analytical innovators for a highly coveted award that re ects ltco’s ambition to implement positive change within its industry. The company has also received the ‘Recycled Product of the Year’ award for Recycle Bound in the National Recycling Awards and ‘Product of the Year’ for Recycle Bound in the Cornwall Business Awards. These are highly competitive awards and for Oltco to walk away with all three is an incredible achievement.

RIGHT Recycle Bound resin solutions fit in perfectly by the coast

As the impact of waste plastic across the world becomes an increasing concern, Oltco has joined the movement to combat the issue through the launch of Recycle Bound; made using recycled plastic, it will not only transform spaces (such as driveways and patios) but will play a role in utilising plastic which is already in circulation. The Directors of the company, Tom Stringer and Johnny Pearce are all too aware of the detrimental impact that waste plastic is having on the environment, particularly on the beaches around their hometown of Newquay. With vast technical experience in developing, testing and installing innovative resin solutions, they decided they wanted to help combat this worldwide problem through their services. Johnny tells us: “As a native of Newquay, I became increasingly concerned about the huge amount of waste plastic which was polluting the coastline of Cornwall and beyond. In the UK we throw away roughly 8.5 billion straws every year, and each square meter of Recycle Bound consists of the equivalent of 3,000. Therefore, if Recycle Bound was laid on a standard 50 squaremetre drive, the equivalent of 150,000 plastic straws would be recycled in the process.” Tom adds: “We’re proud to be an innovator, not an imitator, and as a business we’ve spent the past five years developing uni ue resin bound solutions. Through our new product design process we decided to explore waste plastic forming part of our blends. After 24 months of intensive development and testing, we launched Recycle Bound in January as a new, environmentally friendly option.” To amplify the business’ thriving model and promote its environmentally friendly ethos across the UK, Oltco has successfully launched a franchise scheme, with franchises in Bath, Blackpool, Lancaster, Ipswich, Colchester, Derby, Plymouth, Northwich, Cheshire,

Gloucester and most recently, Liverpool that all offer Recycle Bound – promoting this unique product and raising awareness of plastic pollution. Overall, it’s been a particularly groundbreaking year for Oltco who continue to provide exceptional and innovative products to clients across the UK whilst also championing an environmentally aware approach. The company exceeds customers’ expectations with fantastic results and outstanding customer service and continues to supply its high-quality products across the UK. Here’s to another year of success for a great Cornish company.

e t a m i t l u e h T KITCHEN DEAL

With January comes sale time, with retailers promising ‘massive’ discounts. When it comes to kitchens, however, it’s not always as straightforward as it seems.

W

hen most kitchen companies say they’re offering 50% off, often what they mean is 50% off their kitchen cabinets, and not their doors, handles, plinths, taps or worktops. With this in mind, the team at St Austell-based Kettle Co. Kitchens wanted to come up with an offer that meant their customers were genuinely getting the best deal possible – one that meant savings could be made on every element of their dream kitchen, not just a cabinet frame. It also meant the savings had to be genuine, honest and not taken off in ated pre-sale prices. Kettle Co. Kitchens are already synonymous with stunning designs and an ability to fit kitchens to customer requirements (not the other way around!), and that’s because Managing Director, Dale Williams, is not only from a family of time-served cabinet makers, but also has a degree in design. His designs are so good, they’ve actually featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs! When it comes to choice, customers are spoiled for it! At Kettle Co., a stunning selection of contemporary and traditional styles can be found, from timeless, Shaker designs through to high gloss, streamlined, handle-less options. There are also plenty of colour choices and beautiful worktops to choose from, for that extra special finishing touch. Unlike the national retailers, Kettle Co. are able to offer uick, e cient and reliable service. Because they’re local, every member

of the team is there, close at hand, to deal with any changes, additions or any unforeseen issues that crop up during installation. And there are few kitchen retailers that can say their Managing Director will attend a kitchen installation, should his advice be required. That’s invaluable peace of mind right there! So, how can Kettle Co. offer the best kitchen deal? Well, the team have always offered competitive pricing, but as this is January sale time, they’ve gone the extra mile to create a genuine offer for their customers. In a nutshell, they promise that they won’t be beaten on price. They’ll price match against any other UK retailer’s store or website price, including offer-code discounts. They’re also offering a range of additional discounts throughout the sale period, until the end of January, so you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better deal! So, if your New Year’s resolution is to update your tired and outdated kitchen, now’s the time to get in touch with Dale and the Kettle Co. team.

Cosy carpeting

| LIFESTYLE

As the winter chill sets in, it couldn’t be a better time to treat yourself to some luxuriously soft carpeting.

RIGHT Bring some cosiness to your home this winter

BELOW Rugs make the perfect addition

I

t’s January, it’s cold, we have another three months to wait until spring graces us with its presence. If there’s any time that you would want to invest in some soft and luxurious carpeting, it’s now. Imagine stepping out of bed and your feet meeting the warmth of a Canterbury rug. I know that’s my first thought when I wake up in the morning; I have slate tiling in my bedroom and over winter I can’t even step out of bed without finding a pair of socks to protect my feet from the cold first! Having had a look at the beautiful selection of ooring at Hardy Carpets, I’m very tempted to invest in some warm and cosy carpeting or perhaps a few soft and luxurious rugs. If not a fully fitted carpet, the option of a soft rug provides an easy avenue to give your home some much-needed warmth and cosiness. We hear from Lynzi who tells us: Here at Hardy Carpets, we know that a rug can help transform a room. At our showroom in St Austell you’ll find rugs in many sizes, shapes, styles and colours.” Whether you’re looking for a modern rug, a Persian rug, a rug for a child’s bedroom or a hallway runner, there are options to suit all styles and tastes.

With two showrooms based in St Austell and Summercourt, and a third in Liskeard – currently undergoing an exciting re-fit it’s well worth visiting one of the showrooms so you can touch, see and feel the beautiful designs in person. Not to mention that the helpful staff are on hand to give you advice on what designs and styles are available. One customer has said of their experience: The staff helped to find the right carpet and cut it to my requirements. It was all done with great customer service from start to finish. And in regards to the fitting service another customer has said Hardy Carpets are highly recommended. The carpet fitter did a fab job and lovely blokes. Many thanks.” So, if you’re tempted to treat yourself to some cosy new carpeting or a luxurious rug this winter, make sure to get in touch with the team and find the perfect style to suit you and your home.

FOAM IN CONSTRUCTION With the promise of a new decade ahead of us, now is a great time to think about using spray foam insulation for your construction project. ABOVE Could your project benefit from the versatility of spray foam? 

O

ne of the most versatile insulation methods currently available in the UK and Europe, over the last few years, spray foam insulation has only continued to grow in popularity. Its performance, speed of application and durability outperform just about every type of traditional, premanufactured alternative. If you’re embarking on a new construction project, Richard Yeo, Managing Director of ThermoFoam stresses the importance of using a professional and experienced contractor to take care of the insulation. “This can help to alleviate numerous problems,” he explains, “not least the everincreasing thermal requirements in the form of U-Value targets.” Whereas many traditional forms of insulation may require an air-gap, spray foam is applied in-situ, directly to the substrate, leaving no room for condensation to form. This helps to save space in your roof rafters or wall studs, reducing the cost of structural materials. What’s more, with airtightness now a vital consideration on all new build projects, Richard continues: “Spray foam offers this in abundance, without the need to seal and tape joints.” For new build projects that are curved or of unusual shapes, it’s almost impossible to insulate effectively with any

form of pre-manufactured insulation. With spray foam, however – because it’s installed as a li uid which expands to fill a void such obstacles are easily overcome. Having carried out many different installations for a range of clients across the Duchy, Richard and the ThermoFoam team can confidently say that there are few other insulation solutions that can save significant time and allow you to stick to project deadlines quite like spray foam. Spray foam offers true speed and e ciency, with most new build homes being insulated in just a single day. In comparison to premanufactured insulation such as fibrebased, or rigid PIR (which can take several days, or even weeks, to install), spray foam allows you to move forward with your project, almost immediately. If you’re embarking on a new construction, be it for your own dream home or for a commercial project, the benefits of spray foam really do speak for themselves, so why not give ThermoFoam a call?

THE VALUE OF INDEPENDENCE Do you have a holiday cottage or properties that an agency markets for you?

R

unning your own self-catering accommodation alongside daily life used to be more demanding than it is today, so it was easier to pay the agency fees and let someone else do the leg work. But, explains Jo Blaylock, property marketing and booking expert at ACT Independent, “times have changed.” “Owners of quality holiday properties can pay between £20,000 and £70,000 in agency commissions over a three-year period,” Jo continues. “Agencies typically take 20% plus VAT of the total booking value; then it’s the owner who pays for changeovers, service fees, property maintenance and bills. It’s significant money. Since many local agencies are now owned by large corporates, Jo tells us, “your property gets contractually locked in and competes for bookings among thousands of others.” This is a missed opportunity, especially when you have an excellent property that can hold its own. According to ACT, owners’ main concerns about going it alone are getting enough bookings, and disruptions from guests when booking or during their stay. Firstly, Jo stresses, you really don’t have to pay an agency to market your property to get bookings. “Our experts will do everything you need to professionally set up your marketing. And we'll continue to provide support if you want us to. Most tasks involved can be automated by having a website carefully designed and written

for your property.” With ACT, your website would include an availability calendar, so guests can simply book and pay online, linking your availability to live listings on portals like Booking.com. Secondly, potential guests sometimes have a query about advertised rates, start days or length of stay. “An agency asks for your response to these anyway, so the only difference is you reply to your guests direct,” reveals Jo. When it comes to cleaning and property maintenance, “which owners are responsible for even when using an agency,” local service companies are hired to organise this. “Sharing your property calendar enables them to support you and your guests hassle-free.” At the end of the day, Jo believes you’ve got nothing to lose and little to be concerned about, especially given that you normally have a six-month agency contract termination clause – the perfect time period to become fully set up to run independently. Jo finishes If for some reason you change your mind, simply return to the agency or join another. They’ll definitely want your business. For more sound advice on capitalising on your holiday cottage or to find out more about ACT Independent, be sure to give Jo and the team a call.

A BEACH

With sweeping sand dunes, enticing rockpools, lifeguarded waves and miles of beach, owner of Forever Cornwall, Phil Gendall, explores Gwithian as one of the UK’s classic holiday destinations.

 MAIN The iconic Godrevy Lighthouse lies just offshore

I

f you’re unfamiliar with this spot, the beach at Gwithian is tucked away on the west side of St Ives Bay. Thanks to its westerly facing position, it basks in sunlight throughout the day. The beach is backed by towering dunes (or ‘the Towans’), and has endless golden sand and crystal-clear sea. Across the bay you can see St Ives perched on the horizon, and just offshore is the iconic Godrevy Lighthouse, the inspiration behind Virginia Woolf’s To The Lighthouse. We ask Phil to sum up what he loves about this beautiful pocket of Cornwall.

Space to breathe Gwithian is at one end of three miles of beach stretching all the way to Hayle, “so even in August, Phil explains, you can find plenty of space for you and your clan.” The dunes invite exploration and coastal paths stretch out towards the lighthouse and beyond. “This is a wildlife-rich area with numerous seals, and even dolphins and rare Cornish choughs – making it a great place to unwind and really feel as if you’re in another world.”

Something for everyone “As the beach is so vast,” Phil continues, “it offers something for everybody. It’s a great place to learn or improve your surfing skills, with schools offering lessons and gear rental. At low tide the beach has an array of rock and sand pools, which are perfect places to explore and paddle with the little ones.” What’s more, four-legged friends are welcome all year round on the south-westerly section of the beach. Forever Cornwall has a selection of chic chalets and stylish beach houses within a stone’s throw of the sea, handpicked for people who like nice things. If this sounds like you, book your 2020 Gwithian holiday now and give yourself something to look forward to!

G OURMET We catch up with all the latest news from some of our favourite chefs, eateries, hotels and pubs.

gossip Traditional dishes

with a twist

The Falmouth Hotel has decided to buck the trend of offering Michelin style fine dining cuisine, choosing instead to maintain an element of fine dining and Rosette worthy food alongside a more diverse offering of choices that cater to every palate.

Shopping for

a healthier life In the new year we can form resolutions that boost our own health and at the same time reduce the burden on our planet’s resources. And at Archie Browns – based in Truro and Penzance – the team is committed to making conscious choices available to all. In Archie rowns’ popular refill section, you’ll find a selection of organic grains, nuts, seeds and similar, that the team has refined in order to minimise the footprint of your food. For instance, explains founder Helen Swift ur new ‘almonds by sail’ have travelled lightly from Portugal, maximising their amazing nutrients and avour. We also have olive oil sailing in soon!” You can refill your toiletries, laundry and household products, choosing from a range that’s kind to both body and conscience, without harsh chemicals or animal testing. The latest alternative shampoo and conditioner bars, for instance, are perfect for those looking to remove plastic from their bathrooms. For more information visit www.archiebrownscornwall.co.uk

The idea is to provide classic dishes, made to their traditional recipes, with seasonal and local ingredient twists. Classic dishes include beef bourguingnon, breaded mozzarella with pesto or liver bacon and onions then you have the fine dishes of mackerel tartare or king scallops with lemon butter sauce.

The ambition is to delight guests with good, honest and traditional avours, to move away from the traditional evening menus and let the chefs express themselves with a larger, more consistent brasserie feel menu – moving with the seasons and engaging with local suppliers. For more information call 01803 296677 or visit www.falmouthhotel.co.uk

Winter warmers at The Lemon Arms

As soon as you set foot in the Lemon Arms in Mylor, you’re met with the warm and cosy ambiance of a traditional Cornish pub. Christmas is over, the winter chill doesn’t look like relenting and a meal in a warm pub in front of the fire is exactly what we need to make it through to spring. The Lemon Arms knows good food and you’ll find all the pub classics on the menu, from steak and ale pie, to beer battered cod and chips, and comforting pasta dishes. All food, where possible, is sourced locally from Cornish suppliers, and everything is freshly prepared by the chefs, so if you could use a winter warmer in front of the fire this January, be sure to book your table.

GET ORGANISED Have you decided to move home in 2020?  ABOVE Whatever it is you need help organising, Shelly and the team can help

T

hey say that moving house is one of the most stressful things to do. At Kewniek (the Cornish word for ‘mossy’), owner Shelly Moss knows this well, having moved many times herself. But, she tells us: “I found it less stressful because I was organised.” Of course, there are things that are out of your control. As Shelly tells us: “We moved to one house and they had left all their unwanted furniture and white goods – nightmare!” The key is to really get organised with the things that you can control. When you are, the things outside of your control are much easier to deal with. Shelly suggests looking for one of the many available online house-move checklists – a great starting point for building your own to-do list. Keen to know more, we ask what else Shelly recommends to help get you organised. Firstly, she suggests de-cluttering before you move. “The worst thing about unpacking at the other end is finding boxes with drawer contents you didn’t get around to sorting, clothes you haven’t worn for ages, shoes that hurt too much to wear, gadgets that you never use or out-of-date items that have been lurking in the back of your kitchen cupboards.” If this is proving a daunting task, Shelly and the Kewniek team can help! Next is to find a good removal company (for instance, Britannia Lanes). “Do your

research,” suggests Shelly. “Do they supply the boxes, bubble wrap, paper? Will they put up your bed at your new home? Do they have a good reputation?” Again, if you’re unsure, why not consult Kewniek and see who they recommend? Finally, organise your change of address. Making a spreadsheet of all your policies with names, addresses and contact numbers for insurance, DVLA, bank, pensions, reward cards – anything like that – is an invaluable tool in ensuring your details are changed on all of your accounts. “Remember,” concludes Shelly, “that if you start getting organised early, there is always time left to ask for help!” And if you are considering enlisting the assistance of Kewniek, don’t just take our good word for it. Television presenter, Nick Knowles, says: “I can thoroughly recommend Shelly and her team, who completely re-organised my house and helped move home with me on several occasions. Having Shelly on board takes the stress out of trying to get organised. Life is more relaxed and there’s more time and space for the important things once she’s weaved her organisational magic!”

20 YEARS OF SHELTER

2020 marks the 20th anniversary of Cornish disaster relief charity ShelterBox, in which time it has supported more than 1.5 million people around the world after disaster.

S

helterBox was launched in 2000 by the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard. This group of passionate volunteers investigated the emergency items people need and worked to understand transport and logistics. They spoke to manufacturers and found a sturdy box. They then visited the Rotary International Conference to drum up support, the initial hope being to help eight-to-ten families a year, with each box containing a family sized tent, sleeping bags, water purifying tablets, trenching tool and pots and pans. ShelterBox’s first response was to support families affected by the 2001 earthquake in Gujarat, India. 20 years later, ShelterBox has grown to become a respected humanitarian organisation providing emergency shelter, essential items and support to over 1.5 million people across 97 countries, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, with fundraising teams in 15 different countries. And the charity continues to go further and reach more people by working with a range of in uential partners, including the International Federation of Red Cross and the International Organisation for Migration. The need for emergency shelter is now more urgent than ever. In fact, 88 million people are currently living without shelter after disaster or con ict. ut thanks to its

supporters and fundraisers, ShelterBox will  ABOVE Supporting continue to work hard to meet its original goal: helping families to rebuild after disaster. families around the world in the wake Innovation is at the heart of this impressive of disaster charity’s work, and it’s always searching for  INSET ways to improve. Indeed, ShelterBox teams Enjoy the are always out gathering feedback from Visitor Centre's people they’ve supported, then working interactive exhibits to improve the aid items they provide, including blankets, tents and solar lanterns. If you’d like to learn more about ShelterBox, its founding story, its aid items and the impact of its work, you can visit the headquarters in Truro. ShelterBox’s Disaster Relief Visitor Centre is fast becoming one of Cornwall’s most unique attractions – welcoming over 9,000 visitors in 2019 alone. Families are sure to enjoy trying to pack a ShelterBox, and interactive exhibits showcase the positive impact of the charity’s work. The best part is that admission is free! Simply head to the website for opening times, then pencil in a visit.

LIFE CHANGING DENTISTRY At Pure we have decades of combined experience providing Advanced Dental Solutions. These days nobody needs to be troubled by their teeth. All of the images below are of real clients.

TRURO

SINGLE OR MULTIPLE MISSING TEETH

When you have lost a tooth it not only causes emotional distress, but also upsets the equilibrium in your mouth. If you lose a large tooth at the back of your mouth, you will normally compensate by eating food on the other side of your mouth, by doing this you will effectively be placing excess pressure on these teeth which, over time could cause them to break or be lost. If you lose a front tooth it is likely to have a massive effect on your self-confidence.

DENTURE STABILISATION

Loose dentures can cause frustration and embarrassment. Wearing an ill-fitting denture can make it difficult to eat certain types of food - which in turn could have detrimental effects on your digestion and overall health. Many people with loose dentures will use lots of denture adhesive to compensate which can leave an unpleasant taste in the mouth and make cleaning the denture difficult. Dental implants can help stabilise dentures, allowing you to eat whatever you like with confidence.

NEW SMILE IN A DAY

In suitable patients we can replace a conventional removable denture with a fixed restoration in just one day! We use a revolutionary approach that has radically changed the replacement of lost teeth. We can now remove failing teeth, place new implants and provide a fixed full restoration in a single day. This approach to dental treatment allows you to rediscover the feeling of being able to smile with confidence and it allows you to begin to enjoy eating again.

TAKE THE FIRST STEP. We offer complimentary treatment advisor appointments where a highly qualified member of our team will make treatment recommendations after listening to your personal situation, or you can attend one of our free, relaxed and informal presentations which are held regularly at the practice. ALL ATTENDEES RECEIVE A FREE ASSESSMENT WORTH £120

ornwall is famed for its community spirit and its people’s willingness to help each other, but did you know that there is a service, fully manned by volunteers and available 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, designed to help those in need of assistance outdoors? The Bodmin based East Cornwall Search & Rescue Team is a registered charity that supports the statutory emergency services in searches for vulnerable people, and provides a rescue service in some of the more di cult-to-reach areas of the county. The team’s main area of operation is to assist the Police in searching for high-risk missing people, usually identified in terms of their vulnerability. This varies, from elderly individuals with dementia, to despondent teenagers. The team supports the Police by providing highly trained search managers, dog handlers and team members who form search groups, going out in all weathers and conditions. Trained to national Mountain Rescue standards, the team includes water rescue

technicians and rope access operators, as well as experienced hill personnel who are able to find and rescue those lost or injured in areas such as odmin Moor. The team of volunteers come from all walks of life, with ages ranging from 23 to . Team Leader, Steve Marshall tells us “The heart of what we do lies within this extraordinary group of people who give up their work time, their family time and their free time in order to help those in need, for no other reason than to help others and give back to the community we live and work in. East Cornwall Search & Rescue Team is a registered charity that relies on fundraising in order to be able to continue its valuable operations.
