to the August edition of Cornwall Living!

ornwall has a rich maritime history with its days of old, when pirates ruled the waves, shaping the Duchy’s maritime tales and folklore. Global seafarers and coastal trade was of vital importance to the region’s economy for hundreds of years and our fishing fleet has, to this day, been landing its prolific catch at ports and harbours around Cornwall. More modern times have seen Cornwall’s world-class sailing waters being enjoyed by yachtsmen and yachtswomen from around the globe, hosting prestigious events such as the Tall Ships Race. This year, Falmouth Week (5th to 14th August) celebrates some 60 years of racing and brings ocean excitement and shoreside fun to this famed maritime town; Dan Warden looks forward to what is shaping up to be the biggest and best event yet (from page 23). We’ve also been in and around the town and found some must-visit retail, foodie and activity businesses which can be found in our Falmouth Feature on page 61. Keeping it coastal, we also hear from E-Foil (page 69), the first electric hydrofoil school in Cornwall, and sample some top tipples from Mainbrace Rum (page 65), ahead of their sponsorship of the Mainbrace Rum Race at Falmouth Week. Elsewhere, Cornwall’s burgeoning property market brings some very special houses to this issue. Head over to our property section from page 31 and who knows, your dream home might just be a page turn away. …happy reading!

Not stocking anything that they don’t love to eat and drink themselves, everything is sampled, and if the duo doesn’t think it works in terms of quality or provenance, it simply doesn’t make it to the shelves. Hoping to bring healthy and tasty inspiration to everyday life, along with a little bit of luxury, the deli welcomes all to come in, take a seat and enjoy a dish created from the produce, whether inside or on the patio, with flaky pastries on offer for morning visitors. From freshly baked cakes to cheeses and aged charcuterie, and even picnic hampers for a day to remember, there is something for all tastes at The Cornish Kitchen.

Finding comfort and reducing cost

A festivity

captured on canvas Kurt Jackson is an artist known the world over for his breath-taking landscape paintings depicting the splendour of the natural world. But every June, Jackson takes a break from creating seascapes and turns his attention to painting the sea of humanity as he returns to Glastonbury Festival as its official Artist-in-Residence, a post he has held since 1999.

With recent spikes in electricity prices, energy efficiency has leapt up the priority list for many home renovation projects. It pays to think long-term, and invest to get the most out of your home aesthetically and energetically. When designing your perfect home, it isn’t always easy to get that perfect balance of your Pinterest vision board, and how things work practically. Maybe you relax better when everything matches perfectly, or to you, comfort is key. Amongst this balancing act is also whether your investment is sustainable. Does it help the environment, and most importantly for many at the moment, will it save you money long term? Shutters fulfil all the needs above. You may be able to save a few pennies here and there by using the washing line instead of the tumble dryer, but by choosing the right window covering, you can save on energy bills all year round. Around 25-30% of the

energy used to heat homes is disappearing through the window and window frames. By adding extra insulation to your home, shutters can reduce heat loss up to 64%. In the summer, shutters not only reflect natural light around the room, so you’re less likely to need to turn on the light, but they can also help cool your home – a win-win! Whatever your home aesthetic, whether it’s clean and contemporary with pure white, or traditional with a wooden stain, we have shutters to match. For more information call 01637 849153 or visit www.shuttercraft.co.uk

Over the last 20-years he has painted some of the biggest names in music including Amy Winehouse, Oasis, Radiohead, Foo Fighters and the Rolling Stones. The paintings created over the weekend are then sold to raise funds for the festival’s charities – Greenpeace, Oxfam and Water Aid – so far raising over £250,000. You can check out a selection of Kurt’s festival paintings and find out more about his on-line. For more information call 01736 787638 or visit www.jacksonfoundationgallery.com/ glastonbury

The word on

Bringing the ‘wow’ factor to Wadebridge

the street

Summer ‘22 has truly arrived with a bang at Whitegoose Wadebridge, where they’re embracing summer in an eclectic fashion mix of colour, colour and more colour. Back in stock is their amazing collection of very special dresses from Australia, unique pieces that cater for everyone incorporating imaginative styling and amazing chromatic combinations. Be daring this season, mix and match and be prepared to look absolutely stunning. If you’re seeking comfort then their cropped and ankle grazer length trousers and shorts, in a variety of great styles, will complement their colourful linen tops and tunics along with Suzy D’s linen shorts, ultimate joggers etc. The One Hundred Stars collection of silk Kimonos, lounge pants and dresses continue to be hugely popular and combined with jeans or a simple camisole dress will add a certain blended-style. Adding further interest, they also have a great selection of diffusers and French soaps with a great selection of European accessories. Come and see for yourself. They’re open Monday to Saturday 10 am to 4pm (‘ish). For more information call 01208 815157 or visit www.facebook.com/whitegooseandco

Since opening in September last year, WOW in Wadebridge has garnered a reputation for offering beautiful, well-designed furniture, interior and home accessories and gifts. Located on Molesworth’s fabulous high street, with great accessibility thanks to nearby parking, the shopfront is immediately striking as you pass, inviting you in to consider the careful curation of items and how they might be used to update your home. Chosen as Brand Partner for Cornwall by Voyage Maison, and a major stockist for Broste, Blomus, Rader and Coach House, this month, the team at WOW are championing the wonderful designs of ‘A Blackbird Sang’ in its garden special, with limited-edition framed coastal prints by local Wadebridge artist, Jonathan Payne. The gift range includes treasures from Joma and Amanda Coleman, as well as Nereides Jewellery from Paris, for whom WOW is one of only two stockists outside of London. Vegan luggage by Katie

Loxton is also popular, as are the naturally made Molecule Home Fragrances and Nathalie Bond Skincare. Collecting products from UK and European designers, as well as small independent makers and local artists, many of the designs in-store are made individually for WOW. Among the entire collection you’re sure to notice a distinct theme of sustainability. What’s more, the store aims to offer products you’re unlikely to see in other outlets, whilst keeping the independent high street of Wadebridge a vibrant hub for those seeking some much-needed retail therapy. The best part is that the collections in store are but a sample of what WOW can offer you, meaning it always pays to speak to the team about your interior needs or any other furnishings you’d like to source. More than just a farm shop

Tre Pol & Pen is a multi-award-winning farm shop and restaurant open 7 days a week serving breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. They are based on their own farm and sell their own beef, lamb, honey and a smattering of other produce with their focus on all things Cornish! They have recently put their farm shop online where customers can order with free delivery options. A regular and popular feature is the Cornish Makers market which showcases the best of Cornish Craft – next event Saturday 6th August – along with workshops in macrame, lino print, watercolour and fabric painting. Coming up soon they will be hosting a regular outdoor cinema – 30th July, 12th August and 3rd July – and circus skills workshops – 3rd August, 17th August and 31st. To cap off a summer of fun they look forward to welcoming Mad Dog Mcrea on Friday 2nd September for what’s shaping up to be a pretty wild night. All events are listed on the website. Pottering this summer? Join thearound Saint’s Way Trek

If you’re hoping to get out and experience something new this summer, then why not consider a workshop with Ceramicist, Sally Tully? A superb way of engaging your creative side, Sally’s workshops are one, two and three day courses where she covers slab building, coil building and throwing dependant on the course and the project. On the two and three day courses Sally tries (weather permitting) to squeeze in a Raku firing so participants have a super Raku fired pot to take home, or give as a gift. If you’re interested, be sure to book your tickets very soon as she only has 20 places left in any of the workshops. Sally says, “I have always loved teaching. Sharing my knowledge with others is simply what makes me tick. I often say ‘what is the point of all this stuff in my head if not to share it’.”

She continues, “It is so important to me that this craft that I consider my life continues and is loved by others. I find it amazing to watch my students engage with the materials and to find the peace within it, that I know to be there. Picking up a piece of clay and manipulating it into shapes takes people immediately to a place of contentment.” Sally’s calendar includes an appearance at the Craft in Focus fair at RHS Garden, Hyde Hall from 26th to 29th August, then later at Hever Castle and Gardens’ Autumn Craft Fair from 8th to 11th September, Sally’s expert guiding hand has never been in higher demand! For more information email sallytullyceramics2021@outlook.com or visit sallytullyceramics.co.uk

Laid back dining at The Pheasant With summer finally upon us, the team at The Pheasant have launched an exciting new menu for the season. Simple, honest, responsibly sourced produce and dishes that are full of flavour are key to all their menus, whether it’s tempura squid rings as a bar snack, a slow cooked lamb sunday roast or a delicious southern fried chicken burger. There is one dish that has held fast and won’t be going anywhere soon – in fact, it

12 | CORNWALL LIVING

is fast becoming their signature dish and is now offered 3 ways; classic moules, Thai-style or saffron and cider. Why not while away the evening by sampling the new menu? Perhaps pair with a new summer wine or a refreshing pint in the relaxing garden with views across the fields to the sea. For more information call 01872 510237 or visit www.thepheasantcornwall.co.uk

With an aim to promote a more sustainable and ethical approach towards clothing, Ayr Space avoid the mass-production side of the industry and instead prefer to release garments in small runs, focussing all their efforts in producing quality pieces designed to stand the test of time, becoming that stand out item in your wardrobe. A brand built on the concept of escapism, Ayr Space harbours a desire to seek distraction from the boring aspects of daily life through creativity and entertainment. Combining themes of cinema and space travel, the team produce original content inspired by their surroundings and local culture. Made from high-quality materials and coming in a unisex fit, Ayr Space clothing is made to be worn anytime, anywhere, all year round. Cornwall’s biggest chain of charity shops has just contributed more than a million pounds to the care provided at the counties two adult hospices. The profit was made over the 2021/22 financial year by Cornwall Hospice Care’s 25 stores that stretch from Bude to Penzance. What’s more, it’s only the second time in the charity’s 42-year history that the contribution has tipped the millionpound mark! “Despite the challenges of the pandemic in the last financial year,” says Graham Clarke, the charity’s Finance Director, “our shops and our shoppers helped achieve a profit of £1,017,230. It’s a remarkable result and it’s thanks to our donors, shoppers and our staff and volunteers who all deserve a huge thank you.” During the financial year, more than 45,000 cars delivered donated goods to the Cornwall Hospice Care Donation Centres, pre-loved items that were then sold on in support of the charity’s work at Mount Edgcumbe and St Julia’s Hospices. “We sold 970,000 individual

 Lou Ranford, Ward Sister at St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle

items of donated stock,” Graham continues, “and we’re very aware that a lot of that could have ended up in land fill if we hadn’t been there to collect it, sort it and sell it on.” Lou Ranford, the Ward Sister at St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle understands only too well that “This extraordinary figure proves that donating to and shopping with our charity really does help make a difference. Without this profit that helps fund the work we do we couldn’t provide the care we offer terminally ill patients and their families.” For more information call 01726 839156 or visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk

Surrounded by Falmouth’s burgeoning food scene, local boy and Executive Head Chef Darren Millgate is making waves and taking diners on a laid-back tour of Cornish fields, farms and waters at the picturesque Brasserie on the Bay. Having trained under Michelin-starred Ben Tunnicliffe and learning his trade in the south of France, Darren is back on home turf with a food philosophy centred on honest, Cornish produce. “One of my earliest memories was going out with my dad on our boat at Portholland to pull up the net and see what was in store for dinner. Sometimes it was mackerel, or fiddly spider crabs, occasionally bass. The excitement of not knowing what would be in the net, that still guides me today. It’s far more important than the flamboyance and waste of a fine-dining operation.”

The relaxed Brasserie on the Bay at St Michaels Resort, Falmouth, looks out across the shimmering seas and white sands of Gyllyngvase beach, where the morning catch is brought in each day. This means only the freshest fish and seafood makes it to the plate. “Whatever time of year you visit us,” says Darren, “our local food heroes will be firmly in the spotlight. Pretty well everything on your plate comes with a local story.” Open all year round to food-lovers from near or far, the Brasserie on the Bay is forging a name for itself, with dishes big on local flavours and low in food miles. Bodmin Keep is one of Cornwall’s most prestigious military buildings. In the First World War it was an enlistment centre for new soldiers heading out to France. During the Second Word War it was a base for American G.I.s preparing for D-Day and during the Cold War, the barracks was home to a School for Spies! So, this summer visitors are invited to travel back to a time of code-breaking and espionage at the Keep, with a programme of ‘Spy School’ activities for all. Visitors can learn morse code, test their memory skills, make paper, create invisible ink and dress as a spy! There will also be an opportunity to get up close to some fascinating museum objects with Curators’ Curiosities and see a new exhibition, Suited and Booted, about the design and making of soldiers’ uniforms through the generations. Locally born and nurtured

Ssshh!

It’s a secret… Connection and community have always been the primary focus of husband-andwife team Sam and Tim Moore of Wild Tipi. The past couple of years has meant that priorities have had to be modified and updated whilst they navigated life and business through the pandemic. However, whilst the world was different it enabled them to reflect upon where they are heading and how to strengthen what they already possessed. Soon to be starting are their ‘Simple Supper Nights’. Exclusively available to those signed up to the Wild Tipi mailing list, these evenings will be about simplicity, connection, gathering and a little bit of magic – something we all need at the moment. To take part in this unique experience follow the link below. For more information email info@wildtipi.co.uk or visit www. wildtipi.co.uk/contact/#signup-sc

Two local lads, brothers to be precise, having spun some adventures around the globe, were drawn back by the love of their home county – the sea, the surf, the beautiful countryside, but above all, its array of exciting and mouthwatering produce. So, with a view on a post-Covid future and keen to make a living and share their enthusiasm for all things Cornish, they hit upon the idea of forming a high-quality hamper company that would showcase the best of the Duchy’s produce to those folks ‘up-country’. Appealing to those who have holidayed here and who are missing what they’ve experienced or perhaps those who are just culinary curious, The Cornish Company can satisfy that quest. Be it a pasty, a bottle of Cornish beer or the crown in their offering – the scone (which can make or break a good cream tea) – then they are the mail-order supplier of choice. Customers love what they have to offer, as the plaudits on their website testify!

From Cornwall’s most recognisable brands to small and sustainable family businesses, The Cornish Company champions the best-of-the-best from the peninsula and has built and developed an amazing community of customers who are joining the mission to spread the Cornish message. And what’s more, working in unison with their suppliers, they hope to provide a platform for community members to fulfil their potential and remain in the county, thus helping to address the issue of the ‘Cornish brain drain’.  PREVIOUS The Mainbrace Rum Race

Having said that, let’s not wish the wind away altogether. After all, what would Falmouth Week be without the thrills and spills of the annual Falmouth Sailing Week regatta? The event is an open one, which means that whether you’re a relative novice to the racing scene, or have a highperformance IRC rated yacht, there will be a class for everyone. Divided into two fleets – the Bay Fleet and the Carrick Fleet – there will be seven classes to enter within the Bay, and nine in the Carrick. There will also be five class options for dinghy sailors this year, with a final allocation of classes due to be announced on 5th August. Indeed, fingers across Falmouth town are currently crossed for similar conditions to last year, which saw a total of 150 boats entering Falmouth Sailing Week. Good sailing breezes allowed for some great racing in both Falmouth Bay and the Carrick Roads, on all seven days. “We were delighted to be able to run a near-normal Falmouth Sailing Week after the restrictions of the previous year,” says Nigel Sharp, Chairman of the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association, “and we were particularly lucky with the weather.” This year, the format of the regatta begins with a Skippers’ Briefing and Competitor’s Reception at the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, on the eve of the first day of racing. The following morning will see the first day’s racing hosted by the Helford River Sailing Club, on Sunday 7th August, followed by Mylor Yacht Club on Monday 8th and Restronguet Sailing Club on Tuesday 9th.

almouth Week 2022 is among a host of other similar events both here and around the wider UK, that are helping to bring the colours and sounds of culture back into our lives. In fact, even as I type (perhaps harder than I intend to, given my own lack of a ticket), Glastonbury Festival is just getting underway… What’s really grabbed my interest, however, are the events set to unfold this summer in Falmouth from 5th to 14th August. Why? It may sound like a cliché, but this year’s event is determined to return bigger and better than ever, and the dedicated organisers behind both the shoreside and on-the-water events are excited to once again welcome thousands of locals and visitors as they flock to the town to enjoy ten joyous days of land-lubbing and sailing. As always, a wide-ranging programme of family friendly events will give visitors plenty to think about when planning their visit, with live music in the Falmouth Week marquee on Church Street Car Park and fun activities on The Moor. We are also excited to learn that the Red Arrows will be taking to the skies in their usual spectacular style, wowing crowds with their impressive and gravity-defying aerial display. We just need to keep our fingers crossed for good weather!

Wednesday 10th provides competitors with a standalone, long-distance race; for the Bay Fleet, the Ancasta Champagne Race is by now well-established and immensely popular, while the Carrick Fleet, for the second year running, will battle for places in the Mainbrace Rum Race. With the standalone events complete, Thursday through to Sunday will be filled with the highs and lows, in several classes, of the final, three-day series. Hosting for these will be provided by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, St Mawes Sailing Club, and finally, Flushing Sailing Club, where regatta teas and the prizegiving will take place. With so much going on, it’s perhaps unsurprising that events like Falmouth Week could not go ahead without the support of local businesses. This year, Hine Downing Solicitors sponsor the Falmouth Working Boat series; Mylor Yacht Harbour sponsor the Sunbeam series and, new for 2022, is Falmouth Black Rock Cornish Gin, who will be sponsoring and donating prizes to the Shrimper 19 class three-day series. Also on board this year are Mylor Rigging, who will be providing a rigging support RIB and advice to aid the crews. As Jane Wright, Spokesperson for the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association, explains: “Without the support of local businesses, regattas like this would be impossible to organise. We are indebted and thankful for their involvement – it's a wonderful way for the community to work together.” As always, the sailing is set to generate a buzz of excitement around the town as visitors gather to watch the races unfold – especially those who prefer to keep their feet on dry land. But, as we’ve already touched upon, spectator sport is by no means all the shoreside has to offer at this year’s Falmouth Week! Kicking things off on Friday 5th August,

is the Pink Wig Event. Back after a three-year hiatus, with the addition of a pre-parade party at The Greenbank Hotel, the popular Pink Wig parade is always a sight to behold, culminating in a Pink Wig Roman Party in the Falmouth Week marquee on Church Street car park. Moving into Saturday, and you’ll want to secure a suitable spot between Falmouth Rugby Club and the Falmouth Week marquee. That is, if you want a good view of the Falmouth Carnival Parade! Headed up by the Falmouth Marine Band, this parade promises a dramatic riot of colour and sound. Later in the evening, the Carnival Night will bring revellers a night of musical entertainment from Falmouth Soul Sensation. Free to attend, doors open at 7pm – just be sure to wear your dancing shoes. Other highlights of the week include a performance by The Wurzels on Sunday 7th August, then by Reef on Monday 8th, who are set once again to take the stage and delight the adoring crowds that Falmouth Week always draws. Tuesday sees the introduction of a new event – the Love Train Gospel Music Night – during which Ley Adewole and the Falmouth Community Gospel Choir will be taking to the stage for their Falmouth Week debut. Wednesday is packed with highlights, including the RNLI Fun Day, offering the whole family the chance to meet those behind some of the best-loved local charities, including Sea Sanctuary, Cornwall Wildlife Trust, the RNLI and more.

DESIGNING YOUR DREAM HOME The ability to view 2 dimensional drawings and to see them in 3 dimension and then scale them up to something that is discernible can be difficult. Modern software packages allow incredible detail in on screen models and even create fly throughs to give an impression of what your new home may be like. Having a physical model built can also give a good impression of what to expect from your completed project. But what other steps can you take to make sure the design you sign off on will in reality deliver your dream home. • Have the designer present when you view the drawings • Look at the drawings on site • Get a schedule of room sizes • Agree in advance to seeing the drawings which are for you the critical spaces • Know the site and the passage of the sun • Understand the key views and areas of privacy • Look at how you would use the space • Remember, details are important • Storage – how much do you need? • Think about the things you would improve about your current home. Positioned just inland from the beaches of Carne, Pendower and Rosevine, opportunities such as this are seldom seen in this special part of Cornwall. This disused water tower offers huge potential with a wide range of possibilities, and while there is currently no planning consent, there is full vehicular access which has been passed by Highways. WELCOMING

A NEW FACE Savills is proud to be bringing some fresh talent and local expertise into the residential sales team this summer.

H

aving lived and worked in north Cornwall for over 14 years, Penny Bolton has plenty of expert knowledge in Cornish properties to bring to this prestigious estate agency as their new Associate Director, having previously worked for John Bray Cornish Holidays with a portfolio of rentals across north Cornwall whilst managing a team of 20. “My relationship with north Cornwall extends back to my childhood and having spent many happy holidays on the beaches of Polzeath, I knew from a young age that it was where I wanted to settle down,” Penny reflects. “Having married into the military, it was several years before I was able to make that dream a reality, but since moving here in 2008, I have never looked back. North Cornwall has it all. The incredible landscape never fails to impress, and the lifestyle is superb – unlike anywhere else in the UK. “I am hugely excited to join the team at Savills. The role is an opportunity for me to use my passion for the area alongside my personal and professional knowledge to extend our reach into north Cornwall.” Commenting on Penny’s appointment, Chris Clifford, Head of Residential Sales for Savills in Cornwall, said: “We have grown our residential business considerably in recent years, enabling us to capitalise on the

exceptionally strong market conditions over the last couple of years and the demand from people choosing to re-locate to Cornwall. Using our local market expertise and considerable network, we have been able to help hundreds of buyers and sellers make their move. “I am delighted to welcome Penny to our team. Not only is she exceptionally knowledgeable about – and very well connected within – the north Cornwall market, her energy and enthusiasm is second to none. I have no doubt that her warmth and expertise will be well received by buyers and sellers alike, in turn helping us to build on our track record of selling many of Cornwall’s best homes.” Penny’s new role for Savills will see her take the lead on residential property sales within the north Cornwall market, with a focus on the area between Newquay and Bude, and we’re sure she’ll bring her own drive and expertise to an already flourishing team.

CORNWALL HOME Unveiling the stunning homes of Burrington Estates’ latest Cornish development, Maer View.

ABOVE  The most luxurious of homes

W

hen people think of Cornwall, particularly as a tourist destination, many might picture their favourite beach, or a specific beauty spot in which they captured a perfect picture, or where one of life’s many milestones took place. For the Cornish, though, the beautiful, rugged and charming landscape runs deep in the blood. It is home, in every sense of the word. Paying tribute to this is Burrington Estates, who intend to do so by building a new collection of 21 luxury homes in the heart of Cornwall’s northernmost town. Maer View, Burrington’s latest venture in the Duchy, takes its name from Maer Lake, a site protected by Cornwall Wildlife Trust. As an established ornithological site, the reserve is a wetland meadow with open water features, home to grazing animals and wildfowl. The homes at Maer View have been named to pay homage to the variety

of rare birds that frequent the lake each year, and throughout the build process, Burrington has done everything possible to minimise disturbance to the site. Ensuring that the development retains Burrington Estates’ reputation for excellence moving forward into a cleaner, more environmentally friendly future for our planet, the collection of homes benefit from sustainable technology, promoting a greener lifestyle and paving the way for future generations. Air source heat pumps feature in every property, providing underfloor heating, while bee bricks provide a safe haven for pollinators. There is also the option for PV solar panels and electric car charging points to be added to each home. “As a forward-thinking developer, we have always looked to deliver developments that are built for the future and have as little impact on the local environment as possible,” says Mark Edworthy, Burrington

Estates Founder. “Homebuyers have been moving to Cornwall and the wider south west in record numbers in recent years, not least for the area’s outstanding beauty and variety of natural scenery. We take our responsibility to protect that natural environment very seriously whilst delivering much-needed high-quality housing to the local area. At Maer View, we are continuing this approach and are delighted to have started on site to deliver an incredible collection of new homes on the north Cornwall coast.” Burrington Estates’ name has become synonymous with Cornwall, with enchanting developments in idyllic locations such as Truro, Fowey and Illogan, proving that the developer’s assurance of delivering luxurious, executive homes is at the forefront of its commitment to Cornish life. Once a bustling harbour town, Bude is now famed for its reinvention into a prominent holiday destination. The notoriety of its craggy coast comes at the cost of numerous ships that lie in wreck on the jagged reefs that fringe the base of the cliffs. Popular as

a destination for many lifestyle activities, the town is primarily known for its assortment of outdoor leisure pursuits, like surfing. Local beaches include Crooklets and Summerleaze, the latter of which is home to the iconic ‘Pepper Pot’ – built in 1835 as a refuge for the coastguard. Bude Sea Pool, meanwhile, provides a haven in the form of a tidal lido, built into the very same beach as the Pepper Pot and a fine example of the town’s renovated coastal features. Within walking distance of the town is the beautiful Maer Lake, while Bude and North Cornwall Golf Club is situated in the centre of town, providing 18 holes of enjoyable, challenging golf along a course that is rarely unplayable due to its natural, all-weather fairways and greens. The development itself is just 22 miles distant from Bideford, and only 51 from Exeter, ensuring a luxurious city break is never far away. However, you’d be forgiven for never wanting to leave the charming surrounds of Maer View, especially with the collection of superb shops, restaurants, schools and scenery that Bude has to offer. With a stunning new show home now open and showcasing the incredible new specification that Maer View brings to the table, visitors will be wowed by its incredible interiors, which have been carefully curated by the developer’s own exclusive interior design team. To book an appointment and see all of this for yourself, be sure to contact Maer View’s Customer Experience Executive, Bart.

W  BELOW A wonderful investment in your outdoor space

With a boom in growth over recent years in the outdoor living solutions market, we speak to Brian Johnston from All Weather Canopies for an expert’s insight.

ith another beautiful Cornish summer now in full swing, many homeowners are looking at ways to maximise the enjoyment of their outside living areas. Our experience during the pandemic really taught us the true value of our garden space and the addition of a veranda or canopy is proving the ideal solution for year-round enjoyment. Many are still cautious about travelling abroad and the cost-of-living crisis is squeezing us all, which underlines the importance of being able to enjoy the outdoors from the comfort of our own home. Homeowners that have added a veranda to their patio area immediately secure themselves an extension of their useable living space, come rain or shine. Brian Johnston, owner of All Weather Canopies, says: “We have seen a huge rise in enquiries over the last couple of years. Across Cornwall, families have recognised that the best investment they can make for their homes and their lifestyle is in their own gardens.” As the south west distributor for the Milwood Group, the leading UK manufacturer of outdoor living systems, Brian speaks with authority on the matter: “We have partnered with Milwood for many

years now, their range of modular verandas, canopies and carports are extremely highquality and very attractively designed. The versatile nature of their products provides an array of solutions to cater for any home.” Providing a seamless experience from first point of contact through to completed installation, the collaboration between Milwood Group and All Weather Canopies ensures customer satisfaction. Brian and his team work closely with the local installers across Cornwall to make sure that jobs go smoothly and that a perfect outcome is achieved, every time. “Over the years, we have built some great relationships with installers,” continues Brian. “Our large selection of products offers a rich set of solutions to their customers, which benefits everybody.” Milwood Group veranda and canopy systems are manufactured in the UK, allowing short lead times, with a number of upgrades available such as integrated LED lighting, and are available in six standard highly-durable powder-coat finishes, offering a wide variety of options.

BEAT THE RUSH Could air source heating be the solution to your heating and energy needs this winter?

é ì ABOVE Beat the winter demand and opt to change now to an air source heat pump

W

ith the heating season just around the corner and oil and gas prices at all-time-highs, there’s never been a better time to swap over to an environmentally friendly, energy efficient air source heat pump. With homeowners looking to find ways to reduce their energy bills, we speak with Neil Rollinson – Sales Manager of Cornish-based renewable heating installers, GreenGenUK – to find out more. “Everybody’s been talking about electricity costs, but gas and oil prices have also soared. GreenGenUK installs heat pumps all year round but there’s always a rush as winter approaches to get swapped over. We can’t stress enough that enquiring early is the best way to be ready for when the colder weather arrives and avoid having to pay for more oil or gas!” Neil continues to explain that air source heating will not only reduce a home’s energy demand and carbon footprint, but that heat pump installations are eligible for a £5,000 subsidy through the new Boiler Upgrade Scheme. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme – or BUS for short – pays homeowners £5,000 towards the cost of replacing their fossil fuel heating system. With the subsidy, the costs of installing a renewable heating system will be similar to the costs of installing an oil or gas boiler. What’s even better, is that GreenGenUK deals with the whole application process for their customers.

The old RHI subsidy scheme was customer-led but now the installation company deals with Boiler Upgrade Scheme applications. This keeps things nice and simple for customers and means GreenGenUK can inform customers if they’re likely to be eligible from the off. GreenGen, the south west’s leading renewable heating installer, offers free and impartial advice to anyone considering making the swap to air source heating. Contact them today to start the process of upgrading your heating system and lowering your bills, before the winter rush.

Recognising the value of quality and longevity as we look to the future of our home interiors.

W

ith a continuing squeeze on disposable income for many households, companies are recognising a continuing need to offer both quality and value. As businesses across the land adapt themselves once more to yet another version of a new normal, the team over at The Carpet Trader in Wadebridge firmly believe in the quality of their flooring goods and installations to offer longevity and the continuance of performance for the longer term. April Watson, company Director at Carpet Trader, is something of an aficionado for trendsetting interiors and knows a thing or two about the importance of sumptuous home décor while working within budgetary parameters: “Here we continue to offer, as we always have, a wide range of products to transform any home or space while bearing permanence in mind, and in that way offering great value.” Speaking from The Carpet Trader showroom, she goes on to say: “Several of the suppliers from which we buy our goods now offer lifetime warranties. We want to know that our customers have peace of mind and know that they have made the right choice with their flooring and carpet installations.” The company is also driving forward an increasing number of products which are made using natural materials, including

wool carpets which have excellent eco credentials, and a wide selection of hard floor solutions, including engineered wood flooring which has all the strength, durability and beauty of traditional solid wood, but in a sustainable form that preserves the precious hardwood. Packed full of character, real wooden flooring can bring a sense of unrivalled warmth and authenticity to the home. “Every client is working to a budget,” April explains, “and we always pride ourselves on our ability to cater for all. Whether a client has a full house renovation or a single room to change, our expert fitters are on hand to provide a tremendous standard of work. Going forward into the next few months with the fiscal uncertainty faced by so many, we will continue to adapt as a business and to adopt great new products. As a company, we feel that what you put into your home should bring beauty and sanctuary, and that value is not represented by the cost of a thing, but by its contribution.”

ON THE MOVE

to the Duchy? If so, we discover how M.J. Christophers & Son can help.

I

f you’re looking to relocate to the West Country, then there is a business that’s been tried and trusted for more than 45 years, and its team are the experts in this field. Offering removals and containerised storage throughout the county – to both domestic and commercial clients – the M.J. Christophers & Son team having succeeded, over three generations, by offering excellent value and second-to-none customer service. Moving home is one of life’s most stressful experiences, so it’s reassuring to know that a trustworthy company are there to help. And not just with the move from ‘a’ to ‘b’, either! As you move out of your former home, the transition period can often leave you needing to store your entire family’s belongings before being handed the keys to your new abode. While this may seem like a logistical nightmare, you’ll soon see – by clicking through to the ‘Storage’ page of the website – that the team can take care of that for you too. They’ll load your furniture and goods into an empty container at your home, before storing it at their facilities, where the most up-todate security systems are in place – including smoke detectors and CCTV – to keep your belongings safe and sound. Additionally, if you’re thinking about moving abroad, M.J. Christophers & Son have a

network of agents around the world who work to their same exacting standards. Spliced at sea

LIFESTYLE

As a spirits company based in Cornwall, the sea is at the heart of everything Mainbrace does, inspiring a new partnership with British sailors.

W

hen asked about the brand’s ethos, Richard Haigh, Co-Founder of Mainbrace, commented: “When launching Mainbrace, we really wanted to put a modern spin on the traditional maritime aspect of rum to attract a new contemporary audience into the category. In doing so, we aim to evoke the essence of the sea and ethos of maritime life with every sip, encouraging people to come together to celebrate their victories, no matter how big or small”. Unsurprisingly, the name Mainbrace itself hails from maritime traditions, born from the naval phrase “splice the mainbrace”. In the days of sail, the main mast of a ship was steadied, or braced, with a thick rope called the mainbrace. Due to its importance, it was often targeted by enemy fire in the heat of a battle, meaning that a brave team of sailors had to repair it by splicing the rope back together to save the ship. As a reward for successfully achieving this titanic task, the captain would order the ship’s purser to issue a double ration (or tot) of rum or gin to the brave team as a toast to victory. Today, the phrase “splice the mainbrace” has inevitably become a naval euphemism for a celebration and is always accompanied by a toast to “the Queen – God bless her”. With this iconic story in mind, Mainbrace has recently teamed up with double

Olympian Saskia Tidey and upcoming British talent Freya Black as Mainbrace’s latest brand ambassadors. This is a natural partnership for the rum brand, especially as their story is inspired by and based around the spirit of the sea and the values of courage, teamwork and friendship. Mainbrace will be supporting their training across the UK and abroad ahead of their international racing circuit in the build-up to Paris 2024. As an all-women team in a traditionally male dominated and physical sport, they are committed to the empowerment of female athletes to challenge the gender norms in life – a fitting partnership, as Mainbrace wants to attract female drinkers to the rum category. Saskia and Freya are excited about the partnership, commenting: “Mainbrace is a small brand, and we are a small team, so we feel we can work together in achieving our goals. Mainbrace share similar values to our campaign, especially teamwork, which underpins everything we do. We feel like it’s the perfect partnership going forwards!”

INSPIRED BY TH E S E A S O N S

Chef Jude Kereama and Porthleven artist Maxine Greer find common ground through food and art in an exciting new collaboration. ABOVE  Artisitic interpretation alongside culinary expertise

I

f you are lucky enough to visit Kota, Jude Kereama’s fine dining restaurant in Porthleven, you’ll find a celebration of the best ingredients west Cornwall has to offer in more ways than you might be expecting. It’s a well-worn phrase that the first taste is with the eyes so it makes sense that the artworks on the walls of Kota aren’t images of the beautiful Cornish coast. Rather than the silver of the glitter line of sun on sea you’ll find the silver of sardines and mackerel and the orange of muscular crabs. These impressive paintings are the result of a collaboration

between Chef Jude Kereama and artist in residence, Maxine Greer. “Max brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in her field and has had a lot of success and accolades along the way,” Jude explains. “So, when she approached me with the excellent idea of being the artist in residence at Kota restaurant, I jumped at the chance. It is after our first meeting we decided a seasonal change of artwork on our walls would reflect the changing of seasonality and ingredients we use on our menus. This gave us a chance to change the colour palette on our walls

What I love is how we have created a more immersive feel to the dining experience that we had not had before

Credit: Thomas Elliot Photograpy

Maxine lets us in on her discussions with Jude about the importance of how food is sourced and what’s involved in our food industry: “Growing my own vegetables feels like a small step towards my own food production. I’m inspired by what’s in my garden and getting a take on what a chef would do is exciting and feeds into the work. As we move through the seasons the produce changes and so will the walls of Kota – expect to see leafy greens and ruby radishes.” “What I love is how we have created a more immersive feel to the dining experience that we had not had before,” Jude adds. “The artwork reflects the creativity of the kitchen, and the customers really do take time to look at all the paintings and it certainly gets them talking. Our latest dish was inspired by the crab on our wall; Cornish crab, pickled cucumber, radishes, green gazpacho and herb salad.” As two award-winning creatives in their respective fields merge their talents in a wonderful show of artistic interpretation alongside the most divine culinary experience in the heart of Porthleven, it’s only too easy to see, with a view of the nearby harbour from a seat at Kota, exactly what this wonderful county has to offer.

as the seasons changed too. Max went away with an idea in her head of what she wanted to create. I was absolutely thrilled to see what Max had produced for our first collaboration which was based on seafood we use in the restaurant. Each piece of art is measured for all the spaces on the walls, and some are of giant show-stopping proportions that use every bit of space possible. I could not have been happier with the result.” As you enter Kota you are greeted by a procession of John Dories, each with a signature spot on their body. Next prawns, a massive langoustine and, as you turn the corner, a pair of giant mackerel that shimmer like the ocean. The experience is multisensory, immersive – a visual feast on the plate as well as on the walls. “The residency has started with the sea and what feeds us from it. There is more common ground between what a chef and a visual artist do than you might imagine,” Maxine reflects. “Jude’s work is influenced by his surroundings and the seasons, he is drawn to colour and form and all those connections that creatives make between things which inspire them. It’s different but in a lot of ways, it’s the same.”

earning to surf on a regular surfboard requires years of practice and even then, the sport remains super difficult and fickle and rides are short. When you’re on an E-Foil however, you can keep going forever – or at least as long as your battery lasts. E-Foil Cornwall is the first and only centre in Cornwall for electric hydro-foiling. Based in the tranquil waters of Looe Bay, E-Foil Cornwall offers the perfect location in which to learn how to E-Foil, not to mention an exciting new way to explore the iconic Cornish coastline. The best part is that anyone can E-Foil! It’s easier than you might think, and the team at E-Foil Cornwall have found that almost anyone can stand up within just half an hour, and that’s without any kind of surfing background! The experienced instructors make sure that all lessons are safe and fun, and importantly, that you have an unforgettable time. You can choose between three different types of lesson. You can go solo with a one-to-one lesson, or attend as a group and learn together.

The E-foil Experience provides those who have done e-foiling previously the opportunity to explore the stunning Cornish Coastline whilst soaring above the waves. With river, island and coastline experiences available, E-foil Experience gives you the chance to see Cornwall from a totally unique perspective. With E-foil and paddleboard instructors Joel and Dennis at the helm, you can rest assured you’re in the safest of hands, whether you’re fresh to the E-foil scene and need a little instruction to get on your feet, or are more practised and looking to explore the waters in the local area (weather dependant) with a guide who knows the perfect spots to make the most of the beautiful Cornish scenery, and the 60 minutes of battery time afforded by an E-foil.

LIGHTING the way Discovering Cornwall’s rich and vast history at the Royal Cornwall Museum.

W

hether you identify as Cornish or if Cornwall is a place that you hold dear to your heart, the team at the Royal Cornwall Museum warmly invite you to discover the story of Cornwall at the world’s greatest museum for Cornish art and culture. Caring for some of the most significant collections in Cornwall that, together, tell the story of this nation and our links to the rest of the world, you’re sure to come away having learnt something new about this enchanting Duchy. ‘Cornishness’ encompasses a vast history, rich archaeology, mythology, a famous art scene, a once-thriving mining community, a tourism destination, an enviable place to live, and at times, a difficult place to live. Resilience, creativity and a sense of community have been key to the development of the Cornish identity, and you can witness this story unfold at the Royal Cornwall Museum with the launch of two exciting exhibitions this summer. Into the Carrick Roads: Exploring Hidden Cornwall will be running from 23rd July to 23rd December, presenting a visual journey along the river from Falmouth to Truro by award-winning Cornwall-based artist Andrew Barrowman, capturing the changing light and landscapes on his travels. A British Museum Spotlight Loan Gathering Light: A Bronze Age Golden Sun will be on

show from 6th August to 5th November, where you’ll discover the most significant Bronze Age gold metalwork in over a century. Found in the Shropshire Marches in May 2018, the gold pendant dates between 1000800BC and includes a rare depiction of the sun not previously seen on objects found in Britain. This pendant celebrated the life-giving power of the sun during the time of the earliest metalworkers, revealing the importance of the sun in people’s lives and its centrality to their beliefs in this period. Another piece of exciting news is that as part of the exhibition, the Towednack Hoard will also be returning to the Duchy for the first time in 90 years. The hoard consists of nine pieces of Bronze Age gold found in Cornwall in 1931, including four bracelets and two torcs. With a shop full of local products, including cards, toys, prints, books and more, you’re sure to find the perfect gift for someone, and as a charity that does not receive regular funding, your support is vital to the success of the Royal Cornwall Musuem.

SOMETHING OLD,

something new

Turning a treasured heirloom piece into something even more special…

T

aking old unworn jewellery apart and turning it into something new is a long-standing tradition among jewellers. At Justin Duance Jewellery, recycled materials are celebrated. The team can completely transform your heirloom pieces into something new using their unique sandcasting technique; molten gold is poured into a mould made using sand from your chosen beach. This process not only creates a beautiful natural texture, tiny grains of sand are captured in the gold too so you can carry a bit of your favourite place with you everywhere you go. If you aren’t lucky enough to have a jewellery box full of unworn treasure, fear not. All of the gold that Justin Duance use is recycled and they have a collection of vintage old cut diamonds for you to choose from too. “There is something a bit special about a vintage diamond, especially the irregular cushion-shaped old mine cuts,” says Jamila from Justin Duance. “They’ve been shaped

by hand to best reflect the candlelight of centuries past, so they twinkle differently from modern diamonds. There’s a certain romance to them and they pair perfectly with the organic nature of our sandcast rings. While we don’t know the origins of these stones, we consider them an ethical choice, by choosing vintage you are avoiding newly mined.” Sustainability is an important part of Justin Duance’s ethos; when not using vintage, all their gemstones and diamonds are fairly traded and traced from their mine of origin right up to the finished piece of jewellery. They are also in the process of sourcing other recycled gemstones, so look out for one off pieces on the ‘Off the Benchpeg’ section on their website. Whether you have a family heirloom that doesn’t quite suit your taste or are looking for something new, the team at Justin Duance are able to help guide you through choosing a special piece of jewellery. Book an appointment to visit the workshop where you can try on an array of different pieces and see where everything is made.

PROPOSAL PERFECT Ethica Diamonds – helping smooth the path to that big day.

M

aking the journey to that moment of commitment to another individual is wonderful and life affirming, but like so many things worth doing it is one that is better made with the support of others en route. Part of the process of course is making that one-time purchase and symbol of your love for your significant other – the ring! This is where Ethica Diamonds come into their own. Their award-winning customer service team, who are experienced and friendly, will ease away the sometimes daunting responsibility that can tie you in knots before you even get to the service. They will guide you with advice and answer your questions via one-to-one appointments in their showroom or online. A huge range of ring styles are available to choose from, all of which can be mixed and matched from various metal types, carat sizes through to stone sizes. What sets Ethica Diamonds apart are their ethical credentials. This translates into the provision of stones that don’t carry the baggage often associated with mined diamonds. They offer the ‘Ethica Diamond’ – an independently certified moissanite (with a diamond-like coating, often referred to as a diamond simulant) or 100% carbon lab-grown diamonds. Both come with their respective individual benefits – Ethica Diamonds allow you to get a bigger carat size for your budget whereas lab-diamonds are identical in every way to natural diamonds. If you opt for the latter, you can make your purchase, safe in the knowledge that they are of the highest quality having a very high cut value, clarity and colour. As well as diamonds, there are other lab-grown gemstones available including rubies and sapphires and for an even more personal touch all rings can be engraved with a design of your choice. So, let's make new traditions in 2022, and forget the outdated pressure to purchase mined diamonds that damage our planet and the people on it. Ethica Diamonds warmly invite you to join them on their mission to a kinder jewellery industry, and invest in a lab-grown diamond or gem-stone when you’re looking for that special something. The best part is, no one will be able to tell the difference!

ART

TEN’S UP!

A decade dedicated to displaying sea and surf in south-west Cornwall.

M

ike Lacey Photography, Waves Gallery is based on Harbour Road, Porthleven and is getting ready to celebrate its tenth anniversary in February next year! Mike mainly captures his photos around Cornwall at some of his favourite well-known spots – Praa Sands, Kynance Cove, Porthcurno and closer to home on the reefs and cliff tops at Porthleven. He has also been lucky enough to go to Hawaii, explore the amazing landscapes and wildlife it has to offer and document the famous surf break ‘Banzai Pipeline’, which is a massive tick on his bucket list! The gallery now stocks striking splash backs to bring a touch of Cornwall’s ocean life to your kitchen and bathroom. Mike’s skilful photography captures beautiful images which are then heat transferred onto a sheet of aluminium. These HD metal images are sharp, eye-catching and can be fitted to your wall with ease, using the adhesive tabs provided. You can choose anything from crystal-clear waters at Porthcurno to a selection of underwater sea-life images taken all over Cornwall, fast and fearless barrel waves or famous lifethreatening storms!

The finished results are waterproof, UV protected and easy to clean, making them perfect for kitchen and bathroom splashbacks. What’s more, you don’t have to be restricted to standard sizes or proportions, so if you know the measurements and you’d like a bespoke backdrop please email your required dimensions to Mike at the address below. You can send Mike an image of your cooker area, kitchen or bathroom along with the photo you are interested in using as your splashback and Mike or a member of his team will virtually add it into your space to show you how it will look in situ. The HD metal splashbacks can be finished in landscape or portrait, ensuring the art work is displayed perfectly in your home bringing the ocean into your kitchen and bathroom. If you would like to experience Mike’s images in the gallery, be sure to pop down to Porthleven and see them for yourself.

6. DR MARTÍN RASKOVSKY

Palmeras Coast I by Dr Martín Raskovsky Dr. Martín Raskovsky’s use of composition and perspective is wonderfully engaging as he juxtaposes different levels of interpretation, exemplifying the two pillars of photographic art: the genuine spatial dimension and the individual inclination of the reporter. This enthralling combination clearly absorbs the

viewer and invites them to distinguish which of the two realities is the most significant and touching. Time and space reverse themselves, as side effects of a collateral beauty rooted in each tree branch, sunbeam or drop of seawater. Exceptional depth is given to the remote shadows over and above what the eye can see.

FEELING prepared Getting your affairs together to pave the way for yours and your loved ones’ futures.

A

pproximately 65.5% of the UK are home owners. Of these, approximately 48% were first-time buyers and 35.1% are aged 65 or over. Whether you are a first-time buyer, upsizing, downsizing or investing into the rental or holiday let market, Maria Richards is able to guide you through the conveyancing process and has a wealth of experience in all types of properties and ownership. It is becoming more common for relatives to provide financial assistance to a family member who is purchasing a property regardless of whether it is towards their first home or a subsequent home. This may be an early inheritance gift to a younger relative, or it is also now common for children to assist their parents to move into more suitable accommodation for their needs. Whether the funds are from savings, mortgaging an existing property or taking out an equity release lifetime mortgage, Maria Richards can discuss the legal implications of this. Buying, selling or remortgaging a property is a good opportunity to review your general affairs, in particular your Will and estate planning arrangements. New research shows that almost half of the number of adults in Cornwall may have a Will that’s out of date. It’s really important your Will

is reviewed every few years, or when your personal or financial circumstances change. An outdated Will could cause severe implications for loved ones – including missed inheritances, higher inheritance tax being payable and disputes between family members. Reviewing your affairs doesn’t need to take long, and might save you and your family a great deal of time and cost in the long run. Your circumstances may dictate a new Will, Powers of Attorney or other estate planning is necessary, or you may require advice about gifting funds for a property purchase, and Hannah Durston is available to review your arrangements. Maria Richards (Chartered Legal Executive) specialises in all aspects of property transactions and she works closely with Hannah Durston (Private Client Solicitor). Both are based in mid Cornwall and are available to see clients locally face to face, or virtually further afield.

BREATHING EASY S

Enjoy summer without respiratory issues, with a little help from Duchy Hospital.

ummer in Cornwall is a remarkable sight; the the ocean is sparkling in the sunshine, the flowers are flourishing and the bees are buzzing. For many, hiking along the beautiful Cornish coast or going for a sea swim are enjoyable hobbies, but for some battling with respiratory issues, these activities have become a struggle. Duchy Hospital want to help you get back to doing the things you love. After two difficult years during the pandemic, we have all been looking forward to getting back to normality, including enjoying a warm and safe summer. Living with Covid has been a challenge for all, but for some these difficulties continue for many months or even years after suffering their Covid illness. Reassuringly however, the Covid infection for most is mild and settles quickly within 7-10 days. We speak to Dr Ben Soar, Respiratory Medicine Consultant at Duchy Hospital. “Current guidance states that it can take up to three months for Covid symptoms to resolve, however, in some patients symptoms persist beyond this,” he explains. “In these cases, post-Covid syndrome may be diagnosed. Common symptoms of long Covid include breathlessness, a cough, fatigue and difficulty sleeping and concentrating.” However, these symptoms could also be a sign of underlying respiratory conditions that can be investigated with relatively simple respiratory tests. If respiratory complications are excluded then post-Covid syndrome may be diagnosed. Dr Soar can

run these tests at Duchy Hospital, then work with you to decide on a personalised management plan that best suits you and your recovery. Dr Soar goes on to say: “The best protection from Covid is vaccination. After time you may still catch Covid but the risk of becoming significantly unwell remains greatly reduced. Vaccination is the reason we will be able to enjoy our safest summer for two years.” Dr Soar is a Respiratory Medicine Consultant based in Cornwall. His clinical interests include post-Covid syndrome, lung disease, cough, asthma and COPD. He is a part of many professional memberships and has an extensive academic background within respiratory medicine. So, if you are suffering with respiratory or post-Covid symptoms that are preventing you from doing the things you love, do not suffer in silence. There are helpful resources on www.yourcovidrecovery.nhs.uk, or Dr Soar, Respiratory Medicine Consultant holds regular clinics at Duchy Hospital.

CHARITY

ON THE

WATER A world of aquatic fun and skill development awaits at Trevassack Lake and the Helford River.  BELOW A day of fun on the Helford River

P

eople of all ages and abilities are catered for by the Children’s Sailing Trust (CST), the Cornish charity that provides opportunities for children to build confidence, competence and resilience through sailing and watersports. The Trust was set up in 1997 by founder John Green MBE, who wanted all children to be afforded the same opportunities he had growing up around the Helford River. Fast forward to 2022 and hundreds of happy children are now grown up and bringing their own children to the latest CST venture at Garras, near Helston. Since opening in late 2021, CST HQ is now based at Trevassack Lake, a 26-acre former quarry site featuring a ten-acre freshwater lake where the watersports centre provides a safe and supervised environment for all. Visitors aged six to 106, beginners, improvers and those with accessibility requirements can enjoy themselves on the water – or off it! The site features a Learning Centre with flexible classroom space, a popular waterside café and even accessible, self-catering holiday homes as part of Trevassack Holidays. Whatever your age or ability, Children’s Sailing Trust will have an experience right for you, from booking a sailing course on the

Helford River, to swimming in the lake or taking to a paddleboard for the first time – and the lakeside café allows parents and carers, or even passers-by, to sit waterside and watch the wildlife with a delectable brunch or simply coffee and cake. Through CST Experiences you can hire the Learning Centre or Lake as a venue – for anything from a meeting to your wedding day – the tranquil, stunning backdrop of the cliffs around the lake make for the perfect setting for your special day and you can even book the onsite Trevassack Holidays luxury accommodation for yourself and guests. All surpluses made from CST Experiences and Trevassack Holidays go straight back into the charity pot to continue the work of subsidising watersports activities for young people for years to come.
