Welcome

to the September issue of Cornwall Living

s we go to print, the heatwave has abated and we’ve been experiencing some ‘proper’ Cornish weather! However, we’re not complaining as the low pressure has brought with it some awesome waves, which our very own Media Sales Administrator, Claire Bentley, took advantage of on an after work surf session this week; see ‘The view from Cornwall’ below – surf’s up! This month’s edition of Cornwall Living is all about the luxury! From sumptuous stays to lavish lodges, self-catering holidays in Cornwall have never been so splendid. In our cover feature, from page 26, we look at what is setting Cornish stays apart in terms of standard and service. In our special lodges supplement, from page 65, we also discover that staycations in Cornwall are the popular way to experience all this wonderful county has to offer. From woodland parks to Scandinavian-inspired secluded hideaways there is something for everyone – couples and families alike – with versatile accommodation that gives you the freedom to come and go as you please whilst benefiting from excellent on-site facilities. I spent a very enjoyable morning chatting with boutique guesthouse owner Olivier Noverraz about how a move to Cornwall to set up a dream business has allowed him and his family to experience all the wonderful things a life here has to offer – read the interview from page 86. If it’s your dream to live in Cornwall then from page 32 we have some stunning homes on the market followed by design, garden and interior inspiration from experts across the county. We also look ahead to the fantastic, month-long Taste of Scilly food and drink festival that happens across the islands every September (page 101). Now bigger and better than ever, this is a gastronomic event not be missed. Happy reading!

at Bodmin & Wenford Railway’s China Clay event Join Bodmin & Wenford Railway for a weekend celebrating its China Clay railway heritage. Did you know that the steam railway owes its existence to the fact that the Bodmin branch line to Wenford Bridge China Clay dry remained in use until the 1980s? From Saturday 15th until Sunday 16th September, the team will be running trains that worked in the Cornish China Clay industry, including Port of Par locomotive, Judy, the Beattie Well Tank, GWR heavy freight engine 4247 (which worked China Clay trains from Par to Fowey) and diesel engines with local Cornish connections. Joining them will be friends from Wheal Martyn, providing a fascinating insight into the start of the ‘pit to port’ China Clay trail. Plus, there’ll be interactive activities, giving families the chance to get hands on. For more information visit www.bodminrailway.co.uk or www.facebook.com/BodminGeneral

Natural Build is a company based in Helston specialising in traditional building methods that are environmentally friendly. Owner Will Richard tells us: “I want everything I build to be able to decompose back into the earth, without damaging it with toxins.” Will uses materials like oak, redbrick, limestone and straw bail in full development builds; you may question its longevity, but this is how people built for centuries. Falmouth is a place we all love to visit for food and shopping and I can’t wait to be part of such a creative community.” Not only has Mike opened a new shop, he’s also been training hard to paddle from Cornwall to the Isles of Scilly. He explains: “We’re busy training for our sponsored paddle from Porthcurno to the Isles of Scilly, a 32 mile trip to raise awareness for the plastic pollution problem we face,” and all funds raised will be donated to Surfers Against Sewage who are tackling the problem on a daily basis! Only a handful of TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards are given out each year, going to hotels that go the extra mile to provide their guests with the best, in terms of both service and accommodation. Falmouth’s Oceanic Suite Hotel – a luxurious getaway exclusively for adults – has received not one, but three of these prestigious awards for 2018, ranking in the ‘Top 25 Best Small Hotels in the UK’ (the Oceanic is third!), ‘Top 25 Best Romantic Hotels in the UK’ and ‘Top 25 Best Small Hotels in Europe’. Unsurprisingly, owners Tim and Heather are delighted. “We have only been open for four years and are stunned to have won these awards, especially in multiple categories. LUXURY We explore the changing face of self-catering and how stunning properties and amazing services are creating a real experience for the discerning guest.

W

e’ve all experienced that memorable week away in a holiday cottage... The furniture was shabby without the chic. Evidently the owners no longer deemed the threadbare sofa to be good enough for their own home, demoting it for others to use. Crockery and cutlery didn’t match – and why waste the good stuff on random strangers? All in all, it didn’t quite live up to those cleverly taken photos. The WiFi (if existent at all) was presented as a luxurious extra. Ultimately,

though, you’d put up with all these little quirks as part of the holiday’s charm and, anyway, it was just a base near the beach. That once may have been acceptable. But things have come on a long way in the selfcatering holiday market over the last decade or so. Perhaps it’s down to the rise of the staycation, with ever more people shunning the airport queues to enjoy a week away on home soil. People are becoming ever more discerning in their requirements, and faced with growing competition, the market is responding in kind.

ABOVE RIGHT Sand Dunes from Perfect Stays MIDDLE The Old Barn, Cornish Traditional Cottages BELOW Perfect Stays – the clue is in the name!

Phil Gendall, of Forever Cornwall Unique Retreats, says: “We’re seeing a shift in expectation where luxury is the new normal. That’s always been the case at the high end of the holiday market but it’s now more universally true. TV shows from Grand Designs to Love Island expose potential customers to new aspirations, and social media gives an outlet for bragging rights.” These days, people expect more than just a base in a convenient location; they want the accommodation to offer a real experience in itself. Yes, we all want a home for home. But surely it actually has be better than home, otherwise why bother making the trip! George Edward-Collins of Cornish Traditional Cottages puts it neatly: “Gone are the days of providing the basics for guests coming on holiday. To keep guests coming back year in year out, you need to wow them and go above and beyond their expectations. With so much choice and quality rising in properties guests expect that, but they are also wanting to create experiences and memories and this is your chance to do that – you need to blow their socks off!” Emily Turner, Sales and Marketing Director of Perfect Stays, agrees. “The luxury holiday home market is very competitive and as a result, customer expectations and the quality of homes available are increasing year on year,” says Emily. “Guests are looking for the wow-factor. They expect outstanding facilities and completely unique features, from sensational views to indoor pools and high-tech cinema rooms.” So, with everyone upping their game, l x rio s aspects are filtering down the market. Naturally, though, you can expect to pay a bit more for the top features, and it’s worth the additional expense if you can. What’s more, if you are renting a larger property – perhaps to bring friends and family together for a long overdue reunion – then the cost per person is often actually quite reasonable. Without the expense of ights to consider it s worth in esting a little

Gone are the days of providing the basics for guests coming on holiday

bit more into the accommodation to make it memorable for all the right reasons. For the foodies, the experience often starts as o open the front door as o find yourself greeted with a hamper crammed full of locally sourced delicacies – perhaps a Cornish cream tea of freshly baked scones, local jam and clotted cream. A sachet of instant hot chocolate and a couple of custard creams no longer quite cuts it! People want and expect luxury, but they also want convenience and accessibility. Style is essential, but not at the expense of comfort. It has to be practical and hard-wearing too. Guests want to relax without the fear of breaking family heirlooms – especially if they have young children with them. Those of us who’ve begun a holiday by moving an army of glass miniat re fig rines anti e ases and doilies onto the top shelf of the wardrobe (out of the prying hands of the over-active toddler) will know all about this.

BELOW Fabulous interiors at Samphire Studio

Jenna Ali, of Aspects Holidays, says: “Many of our guests seek properties with additional features that they wouldn’t ordinarily have in their own homes. Our properties with sea views, hot tubs and other unusual features, such as an outdoor pizza oven, sell partic larl well. e find that o r g ests enjoy the added luxury when on holiday.” Indeed, as Phil Gendall points out, “holiday cottages can’t all have the greatest sea views, but all owners can invest in better interiors and facilities.” This is evident in Sands and Samphire Studios, set in the heart of St Ives and run by husband and wife team Olivier and Angela Noverraz. Both have a background in running high-end hotels around the world and have now brought this experience and knowledge of luxury accommodation to their own properties. The studios are furnished to the highest standards and as Olivier explains: t s important to s that we offer a fi e star service. We have discerning guests that visit from across the globe and we believe that a beautifully furnished property, with those little luxurious extras make all the difference. We also offer our guests a concierge service. It doesn’t matter that the properties are self-catering, we feel that this level of service is something that should be available to all guests.” So it’s clear that it’s not just the feat res and specifications of the propert that matter. More and more self-catering providers are recognising that it’s the services

ABOVE Seaside luxury with Aspects Holidays

offered that can make or break the entire experience. As a result, many are offering a full concierge service, with staff on hand to cater for any conceivable need. “Our customers want more than just a bucket and spade holiday, and require additional services from the moment of booking,” says Emily of Perfect Stays. “That’s why we offer an inclusive concierge service as standard, and frequently organise anything from private chefs to wine tastings, in-house massages and bespoke surf lessons. In fact, we often arrange a full week’s itinerary for our guests, complete with daily activities, restaurant reservations and transportation.” Indeed, a growing trend is hiring a personal chef to cook for guests inside their home – this can entail the full table service and a bartender, with even the washing up taken care of. Enjoy the best seat in the house and the region s finest ingredients with a men that’s tailored exactly to you and your guests. This is all about focussing on what really matters – catching up with family and friends, without one person perennially tied to the cooker or sink. Many guests are booking health and beauty treatments at their property. This could be a quick massage to relieve your back after a day in the surf or a full pop-up spa if the garden is big enough. Some opt to hire a nanny to look after the little ones for a few hours.

he word ‘opportunity’ cannot be overstated here. In fact, the purchaser of Red Cove will acquire a detached residence with detailed, granted planning permission to demolish the existing property and construct a truly spectacular residence in its place. The plans have been designed by Peter Doggett – an award-winning architect from Australia – and promise to produce an astounding dwelling, the kind of which most of us can only dream! What’s more, in order to protect the stunning view on offer here, the present owners have purchased additional land in front of Red Cove, having acquired a covenant that secures a line of sight across the beach. As it stands, Red Cove comprises a six bedroom detached bungalow with a threebedroom annexe. It’s surrounded by gardens and grounds, which spread over two tiers, the lower of which provides direct access to the South West Coast Path. As locations go, Mawgan Porth is up there with the best of them. Indeed, it’s proven hugely popular among those in search of sandy beaches, dramatic ocean views, watersports and breathtaking coastal walks. The wider north Cornwall area has also become somewhat of a mecca for foodies, with restaurants across Padstow and Rock including Nathan Outlaw’s The Mariner’s, Paul Ainsworth at No 6, Rick Stein’s The Seafood Restaurant, as well as Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen at nearby Watergate Bay. Mawgan Porth enjoys a host of local amenities to keep you stocked with all the essentials, and it’s surprisingly well connected too thanks to Newquay Airport, which is just a fi e-min te dri e awa . For anybody seeking an opportunity to bring their dream home by the sea to life, we highly recommend booking a viewing with Jackie Stanley, to fully appreciate the uniqueness and indescribable beauty that Red Cove has to offer.

to strength

ere at Cornwall Living, we love a success story, and ten years on, My Place in Cornwall has gone from strength to strength. We’ve loved watching this aspirational company progress and are excited to see what the future brings. The team are celebrating a decade of smooth and successful sales and are proud to introduce their new Company Director, Richard Yeo, who took the business over in February 2018. Firmly established, My Place is now in the best position ever to offer clients a premium marketing experience for their property sale. Richard tells us: “In spring we made the decision to re-brand our agency to create something really special that goes beyond the realms of simply selling property. Our website and social outreach has therefore been updated and designed to help promote the Cornish lifestyle, not just the bricks and mortar,” the affect of this being that buyers can engage with a property on a personal level; they’re not just offered a brochure with a monotono s list of propert specifications

they can actually immerse themselves in what it would really be like to live in a property, and in the area that surrounds it. Richard continues: “Our love of Cornwall is re ected thro gh o r website o rnal which features the latest news, blogs, location reports and more, to provide a deeper layer of inspiration for those who want to make the right decision when it comes to buying and selling a property.” Over the last ten years, the way in which property is sold has changed beyond recognition. The digital age has opened property marketing up to a much wider audience of potential buyers and as such My Place has also adapted alongside these changes. Richard explains: “We have embraced the benefits of modern technolog to ensure that our agency remains on trend but most importantly, the ability to service our clients’ expectations remains a priority.” For the modern seller, there’s never been so much choice when considering an agent to market your property with. Online estate agents have the ability to offer low fees however, you may

START YOUR

new life

Local business Britannia Lanes helps happy clients from across the country kickstart their dream relocation to Cornwall.

T

his month, our cover feature celebrates the great Cornish staycation – and who wouldn’t want to visit this beautiful part of the world, time and time again? But, for ever more people, a holiday just isn’t enough and they are making the permanent move here. Cornwall offers both the ultimate lifestyle change and the perfect retirement, especially for those who are escaping the stresses of city life. One company that sees a lot of relocations is Cornish removals company, Britannia Lanes. Established over 40 years ago and built on a solid reputation, this family-run business has helped many happy families start their new lives in Cornwall over the years. Many out of county clients use Britannia Lanes as a company they know they can trust; the string of independent fi e-star re iews spea for themselves. So, if it’s time to make your own escape, Managing Director, Mark Lane, tells us how he can help make it a reality. Britannia Lanes offers a comprehensive removals and storage service, tailored to your specific needs there s no one-si e-fits-all here. “Our approach is centred on listening to our clients’ needs and then accommodating them as best as possible,” explains Mark. “This often includes informing them on alternative solutions that they may not have thought of – giving them options, to either save money or reduce the hassle for them.”

MAIN Live video surveys enable Mark to gain a clear picture of exactly what's needed for each individual move LEFT A careful and considered approach

RIGHT Items big and small are no problem for Britannia Lanes INSET Taking the utmost care of your possessions

Indeed, taking the stress away from the client, giving them more time to focus on the relocation and the new lifestyle they are about to enjoy, is what Mark thrives on. This is one of the great benefits of using this Cornish business: they know the roads and practicalities of a Cornish move better than anyone – ideal when you need to contend with narrow country lanes and cobbled harbours, which whilst pretty can be logistically challenging. Mark’s son, Matt Lane, is the company’s Operations Director, tasked with coordinating the trucks, ensuring everything runs smoothly as you would expect. Another perk is the possibility of oneway mileage, offered for selected dates, which can provide savings of up to £700! Two other technical innovations include the online instant price calculator, which gives a good indication of what the removal might cost, and the video survey – ideal for out-of-county clients, where a home visit is unfeasible. Mark personally responds to each quote individually, following up with more detailed information. However, the video survey is the really smart bit – a great example of a service that goes above and beyond. Using specially developed software, the client gives a tour of their house via their smartphone or tablet. “We get a very clear understanding of their needs and concerns,” says Mark. “Having

some face-to-face interaction, albeit through technology, helps to provide a personal touch – we’re not just an anonymous company!” From this video survey, Mark uses his experience to work out the number of boxes and overall volume required, creating a detailed itinerary. It’s an extremely effective way of identifying any issues, such as items that will require extra special care, in advance of arrival. Britannia Lanes has been using this technology for just over 12 months and Mark says the feedback has been phenomenal. “It’s much more accurate than the typical estimate,” says Mark, “plus crews are better informed on what to expect and what packaging they’ll need.” In the last few months, for example, Britannia Lanes has carried out several relocations with high value or irreplaceable items including pianos, large oil paintings, grandfather clocks, mantle clocks and large antique tables. But nothing is too much trouble for the crews, who treat every move with the respect that they would with their own items. This is exactly what you want when mo ing all o r pri ed possessions and starting your new life elsewhere. So, if you are thinking of making that move yourself, stop thinking and put the plan in action! Why not start by visiting the Britannia Lanes website and going from there? It might just be the smartest move you ever make!

e v i t i s n e s Time We speak to the team at Michael Spiers, Truro who give us some top tips on caring for your luxury watch.

GET TIMELY INSURANCE We don’t like to think about it but accidents do happen. The best way to protect your treasured timepiece against unpleasant circumstances is by taking out an insurance policy, on which the Truro team are more than happy to advise.

luxury watch is a complex piece of mechanical engineering that, for most, is a prized possession. It may have sentimental value, intended to pass onto future generations. Whatever it is, your timepiece is a treasured item that needs to be cared for. After all, a watch can be expensive to purchase, so it makes sense to look after it and ensure it lasts a lifetime. Michael Spiers have been in the watch industry for over 60 years and the team are experts when it comes to timepieces. Here are their top tips for keeping your watch in the utmost condition. Firstly, like most prestigious watch houses, Michael Spiers recommend servicing your watch e er three to fi e ears. f o notice something wrong ne er tr to fix it o rself. Michael Spiers’ Master Watchmaker can service a wide range of models, working closely with brands to ensure your valued timepiece is always in the best hands and working in perfect order. Next is to keep it clean. Whether you wear it every day or just on special occasions, the timepiece will eventually collect bits of dirt and dust. To keep it looking good as new, Michael Spiers suggest using a soft cloth to gently wipe the dial, as well as the bracelet

links. If it needs a bit more work, Michael Spiers offer a valeting service, which concentrates on the aesthetic look of the watch case, bracelet and clasp, achieving the appearance of a brand-new watch – perfect if you have a special occasion coming up! When your watch isn’t in use it’s important to store it correctly. Keeping your watch safe in the original box will help prevent any unnecessary knocks and scratches, and will help avoid dirt and air pollutants. Finally there are a few simple things to consider, like understanding whether your watch is water resistant or waterproof, as well as changing your leather strap to rubber when in water – this can make a huge difference in keeping your watch as good as new. While your watch may require more care and attention than other accessories, tending to its upkeep is more than worth it in the long run. BRIGHT IDEAS Designer Jo Downs launches her new Chandelier lighting collection.

T

his year, Jo Downs unveiled brand new work at the cutting edge of contemporary glass design with the launch of her spectacular new Chandelier lighting collection. The Launceston studio and gallery now showcases a wealth of uniquely beautiful, handcrafted new works that represent the next step in the complex field of f sedglass design. From her trademark ocean-inspired motifs, to geometrically inspired designs, these collections update the classic concept of the chandelier for the 21st Century interior design market. The launch also marked the beginning of a new creative partnership between Jo Downs Handmade

Glass and design company Northern Lights, which has been creating inspiring lighting solutions since 1987 and has worked with Jo to create integrated lighting for her new range of chandeliers. Collections include elegant pieces inspired by nature, like her oceanic ‘Piscis Waterfall’ design, or cloud-inspired ‘Camella Altocumulus’ chandelier, as well as more dramatic, abstract pieces like her stunning ‘Tabella Aetatis’ rectangular chandelier, designed as a statement dining or conference table piece. Alongside these are new collections of wall mounted arc and panel lighting, such as her richly textured ‘Seascape’ wall lights, and panel lighting in Jo’s iconic ‘Beach’ palette of rainbow colours. Visitors to the Launceston gallery can get inspired, discuss design options with Jo’s friendly team, and explore each of the new collections, all of which are available as part of Jo’s new custom design service, Jo Downs Architectural Glass. So, if you’re a lover of Jo’s work, or you want to round off your contemporary décor with spectacular, cutting edge lighting, be sure to visit Jo Downs Glass Design in Launceston!

We catch up with Endurance Flooring, one of the Duchy’s finest retailers of high-end flooring.

n eye for colour and an instinct for everyday luxury is the hallmark of Roger Oates Design. According to the Roger Oates website, by combining practicality and an innate sense of classic design, this fantastic company’s rugs and runners are timeless examples of both heritage and innovation, offering a distinct level of exclusivity, being very selective on its retailers and installers. With more than 60 years of combined experience in the industry, Endurance Flooring, Truro is a business with family, professionalism and customer service at its core. When we met the team last year, they told us that they don’t just want to make a sale and sell as m ch ooring as possible they want to offer each and every customer an experience, and we learned that what matters to the client is all that matters to them. Endurance Flooring backs a number of British manufacturers and brands, and the team often finds that clients ha e their heart set on a particular one before they even enter the store. Fortunately, more often than

not, it’s these top-end, exclusive brands that Endurance holds a contract for, allowing the team to both s ppl and fit them. Roger Oates is one such brand. In fact, Endurance Flooring employs two Roger Oates accredited installers, who have been trained by Roger Oates’ own in-house installer in how to fit its r gs and r nners ens ring that the best finish is achie ed each and every time, with the design that best suits each client’s home and requirements. Of course, Endurance Flooring is more than just an accredited Roger Oates supplier. In fact, it is one of the only companies in Cornwall to offer a full ho se fitting ser ice. This means that for instance, if you wished to lay hardwood ooring thro gho t o r li ing space and then carpet the stairs and bedrooms, the team can take care of the lot, also offering discounts on full house jobs that require a range of different materials. It’s no wonder, then, that this fantastic local company has built such an excellent rapport with many of its customers.

Positive

CHANGE We hear from the team at Kuggar Stoves why stoves are still very much sustainable.

I

DISCOVER MORE Another way to ensure that your stove is running as sustainably as possible is to make sure your logs are dry and well seasoned. Learn how to season your wood, Scandinavian style, with Lars Mytting’s book Norweigian Wood.

n the midst of this incredible heat wave we’ve been experiencing, heating your home is probably the last thing on your mind however, summer season sales mean investing now could save you money and allow you to bed down for the winter in comfort. Another thing stopping you from investing in a stove, other than the incredibly warm weather, might be the fact that we’re increasingly hearing how burning wood and coal negatively impacts upon the environment, and may soon be banned entirely. The team at Kuggar Stoves, however, have assured us that this isn’t the case. Co-founder Amanda Priest tells us: “This scaremongering is simply a myth, stoves have adapted from the days of open fires and now pro ide a s stainable option to heat your homes.” The basis of the problem lies with open fires not sto es and in fact the biggest contributor to greenhouse gases is fossil fuels, but that’s another disc ssion entirel . The reason open fires are not as e cient as sto es is d e to the fact that they’re less controllable than closed appliances, and therefore the emissions that they produce are high in particulates. The cities of the past would be shrouded in a thic smog from open fires howe er progression in design means that closed appliances – stoves, for instance – produce minimal emissions in comparison.

Amanda continues: “Over half the stoves we have on display at Kuggar Stoves are already exceeding emission expectations by ABOVE Choose a more than 50% in anticipation of the 2022 sustainable stove Stove Industry Alliance (SIA) regulations. to suit your home Our range includes brands such as Termatch, Town and Country, Stovax Vision and Vogue, INSET From traditional to name a few; not to mention the Hunter Cleanburn range of stoves that have been in spaces to the more contemporary, the production for over ten years now and are right stove can well within the new standards!” really make a house a home There’s nothing like arriving home from a long autumnal walk, taking off your boots and watching the ames ic er as o warm your cockles. Having a stove doesn’t have to negatively impact the environment, as long as you make sure you choose a sustainable style that suits your home, and even though it’s more apt to be thinking about air conditioning at the moment, the summer sales mean it’s actually the prime time to invest.

GIVE LIFE

some space

Life Space Cabins was born from the ever-growing desire for people to have their own amazing small space.

ABOVE Jamie and the team bring a high level of creative flair to all projects BELOW Just one of the quirky projects the Life Space team has brought to life

DID YOU KNOW? You can gain planning permission on almost any space, anywhere. Whether you’d like the space in your domestic curtilage, woodland or open countryside, there is usually a route to achieving the necessary permissions. Life Space Cabins offers the creativity necessary to work within any constraints.

B

e it a private reading room, luxury annexe, artist’s studio or an Airbnb, Life Space Cabins’ aim is to help you achieve that improved work/life balance that we all strive for. Working with outdoor holiday specialists, Canopy & Stars, Life Space Cabins advises clients on how they can maximise their return on investment, with one top tip being that 70% of a cabin’s rental income is generated outside of July and August. This demonstrates the demand thro gho t the ear definitel worth bearing in mind if additional income is your goal! Life Space Cabins Founder, Jamie Wilson is keen to ensure that his clients receive a bespoke service right from the start. The team will guide you throughout the entire process, from the initial site visit and design, to ensuring you remain on budget. He tells us: “Cost is not a taboo subject and we believe in giving our clients the information to make the right choices for their project and budget.” The company also offers a sense of fun, which Jamie explains is a key difference between Life Space Cabins and other, similar businesses. “When starting Life Space Cabins we wanted our clients to enjoy the entire process, incorporating fun and dynamic feat res that re ect the client and o r own quirky thinking!” Jamie’s interest and, indeed, passion for small spaces was first pi ed d ring his six-month tour of Europe almost a decade

ago, when he and his wife took their small campervan and headed south. “It was amazing how adaptable we became in our small space – it is one of our happiest times. Camping isn’t for everyone, but we all essentially enjoy that childhood love of ‘playing house’. Our cabins give you exactly that.” Jamie’s business partner, Martin Turner, acquired a piece of woodland in 2016 and set about building his own forester’s cabin, to which his family could escape at weekends. “My teenage boys can’t get internet or phone signal there so we really do spend time as a family!” Martin also has a diverse background, majoring in Catering Management, with some impressive institutions on his CV. He joined Jamie earlier this year, offering an unrivalled attention to detail, both in terms of practical skills and customer care. o if o thin o r lifest le co ld benefit from the addition of a bespoke, luxurious small space, why not give Jamie and the team a call?

heart of

THE HOME Improving homes since 1997, H Everett Interiors is delighted to announce the launch of its own new Signature Kitchens range.

E

xclusively selected for you and your Cornish home, each collection within the Signature Kitchens range is named after one of Cornwall’s most beautiful locations, created using high quality products and available at reasonable prices. Indeed, just a quick glance over Signature Kitchens brochure is enough to show you that these kitchens are top end. Take the Kynance collection, for instance – named after the spectacular rock formations and popular beach on the Lizard peninsula. This contemporary take on the traditional Shaker style includes a popular ‘handleless’ look, with a choice of contrasting oak and painted sh-fitted rail trims and o erall there s a refined feel abo t these itchens that distinguishes them from other similar styles on the market. On the other end of the spectrum there is the industrial look – one that’s becoming ever more popular in contemporary interior design, and which the Gwenva collection realises magnificentl . mbracing e design aspects of the industrial theme, such as interior brickwork, Gwenva encourages a comfortable style of living, sitting unassumingly alongside the rest of your living space. In all there are ten collections to choose from in the Signature Kitchens range, and each comes painted to order fitted with innovative storage solutions that are tailored to your needs, and with a long list of handle options, allowing you to design your dream itchen down to the finest detail. Planning a new kitchen doesn’t need to be complicated. erett nteriors owner eath tells s hether o ha e a firm idea of what you want, or need to work through a few scenarios with us, we’ll do the technical bits and help to make the process not just pleasant, but a genuinely enjoyable experience. After all, a new kitchen should be exciting!” The team knows all there is to know about kitchens, with decades of industry experience at their disposal to help you choose the right solution. What’s more, Heath tells us, they pride themselves on customer service and

after-sales care and it s fair to sa that this has been key to the company’s success so far. If you’ve been looking to upgrade your kitchen and want to support a local company whose kitchens celebrate the diverse beauty of o r belo ed co nt wh not pa erett Interiors a visit?

fter experiencing record-breaking heat day after day this summer, there really has been no need to leave the UK, making staycations an increasingly popular option, especially to stunning locations like Cornwall. Honestly, this summer it’s been like living in the Med! And the concept of packing up the car, strapping the kids in and driving to the south west rather than having to traipse through a hot and crowded airport is a whole lot more attractive, especially when the weather’s just as good here as it is abroad! Now, I know I’m painting a pretty perfect picture here but there is a way to make your staycation even easier and that’s if you cut out the process of trawling through booking sites and fighting for o r chance to get the best week of the school holidays, which is why we recommend purchasing your very own holiday home with Parkdean Resorts. The notion that you can make a last minute decision and head to the coast makes owning your own holiday home such a treat. As demand for staycations increases, so does the admin required for a holiday accommodation business. Introducing Anytime Booking.

ABOVE Let Anytime Booking handle your admin so you can focus on helping your clients make memories

E

stablished in 2011, Anytime Booking is a Cornish booking and management system, with an established presence in Cornwall and across the UK. The service currently serves more than 230 thriving campsites, glamping sites and holiday cottage businesses, having so far turned over £140 million in bookings for its existing client base! To put into perspective how much admin time you could save, the Anytime Booking service sends off approximately 100,000 booking-related emails a month during the high season. It is also able to diversify in line with your business, so those offering different types of accommodation under one banner are well catered for as part of one service. As well as taking care of all your admin, the Anytime Booking system puts your holiday business in front of a global audience, thanks to connections with third party sales channels like Airbnb, Canopy & Stars, Booking.com and more. What’s more, whereas other systems are known to lock you down, with Anytime Booking, you have full control of your unique rules and pricing, which you can change at any time. Anytime Booking is successful by making the journey from browsing to booking as easy as possible, including on mobile devices. The team, who are always on hand to help you get the most out of your bespoke system, believe that a clear website with strong calls to action and a straightforward booking process will

result in less drop-offs in the booking service, and it certainly seems to work. So where does this methodology come into the lodge, glamping and elite caravan market? Well, as we’ve already mentioned, Anytime Booking caters for a range of different accommodation types, and with more holiday accommodation than ever before in the UK, more people are taking staycations and often spending just as much for a luxury stay here as they would overseas! Lodges are at the cutting edge of the staycation trend, offering maximum luxury while remaining immersive and authentic experiences. With such a surge in popularity, many businesses are struggling with the increase in demand, namely that of the admin that goes along with it! Always learning from experience and adapting to an ever-changing holiday market, Anytime Booking can take the sting out of this new pressure, freeing you up to ensure that each and every guest gets the most out of their stay, safe in the knowledge that all correspondence – be it queries, bookings or cancellations – are taken care of b a s stem that s config red to ta e care of your individual business' needs.

DID YOU KNOW? The licencing costs for Anytime Booking can be spread monthly, making an already affordable service even more worth the spend!

LAKESIDE

LUXURY We catch up with Selina and Jason, founders of Trecombe Lakes, who tell us all about their story so far. ABOVE Pod living at Trecombe Lakes INSET Trecombe Lakes sits within a haven of natural beauty

F

or Selina and Jason, founders of Trecombe Lakes, moving to Cornwall was a completely new chapter. Moving from east Sussex with three young boys, the pair had no idea where they were going to live or what they were going to do, however they knew that they wanted to launch their own business within the travel industry. After a long search, and after losing one property when it fell through the day before exchanging, the couple came across some land and lakes near Constantine. “We went to have a look on a cold wet day in March . t was a nightmare to e en find as the whole site was overgrown and to start with, we totally discounted it as an option as it looked like too big a job.” Around this time they decided to take a family break, staying in a camping pod. Roughly the size of a four-man tent, they had to bring all their own camping equipment, which, with three young boys, involved a lot of gear! “This got us thinking about designing our own fully-equipped pods that wo ld be large eno gh to fit a itchen and separate bathroom. We revisited the overgrown site that is now Trecombe Lakes and decided ‘this could be the one’.”

Selina and Jason have a number of years’ experience running their own companies, and they’ve also done their fair share of camping, having had some good and some not-so-good experiences. “That’s why we think Trecombe Lakes works so well, as you can experience the whole ambience of camping with fire pits and barbe es while having the comfort of a proper bed, your own shower and toilet!” The rest, as they say, is history, and even now, the pair strives to push the business forward. In fact, they recently announced the completion of the first of six co Lakeside Lodges. This modular holiday home has been built with style, comfort and strong green credentials, and includes a log-fired wedish hot t b on the dec ing giving visitors that extra-indulgent option, perfect for special occasions where you want to relax and rejuvenate in the pinnacle of luxury.

According to the team at My Favourite Cottages, the north Cornish village of Crantock could be the holiday destination you’ve been looking for.

S

o what makes this delightful village such a popular choice for families and those travelling with dogs? Well, the most obvious reason is that Crantock is home to a beautiful, wide sandy beach which, protected by large sand dunes, boasts stunning golden sands and superb clean surf. Considered by many to be one of the best beaches in the area, Crantock is ideal for families and surfers wishing to escape the crowds of Newquay. There is also another popular beach nearby – Porth Joke, or ‘Polly Joke' beach as it’s known locally. Porth Joke can only be reached by foot, however on arrival you’ll discover that this glorious stretch of sand, situated in a deep cove between Crantock and Holywell Bay, is well worth the trek! Much of Crantock is National Trust owned, and its headland is recognised as a Site of pecial nterest d e to the wild owers and rare plants that grow there. There are some excellent walks via the South West Coast Path, where you have the choice of walking along the headland, climbing over the sand dunes, or strolling along the estuary. The village itself boasts a summer tea room, art gallery, gift shop,

well-stocked village shop, three pubs and a church, plus, as you might expect, an excellent choice of self-catering accommodation. My Favourite Cottages has two large properties both within walking distance of the beach and village, each providing an excellent choice for large groups. Firstly there’s Berwyn – a traditional Victorian town house sleeping ten in fi e bedrooms. erw n effortlessl combines Victorian elegance with modern day furnishings to provide guests with spacious, family friendly accommodation in a wonderful location. Then there’s Talland Croft. This large detached fi e-bedroom holida home sleeps up to ten guests and is bright, spacious and comfortably furnished throughout. There’s space aplenty here for large groups to enjoy a relaxing and comfortable beach holiday.

the passionate local producers. And no food festival could happen without its share of tipples to wash down all the wonderful dishes. Scilly boasts not one but two vineyards and is even home to its own micro-brewery, so thirsts will be quenched as much as appetites sated. If you feel the need to work off some of that lovely foodie fayre then there will also be working, family-farm tours across St. Mary’s, Bryher, St. Agnes and St. Martin’s, where you can stretch o r legs and see first hand how produce is grown and animals are reared; enjoy gin tastings at Westward Farm; take part in workshops with Bryher-based Island Fish on how to pick your crab and lobster; listen to ‘A day in the life’ talks from local lobster fishermen and learn how to crimp your own pasties. Then, on the weekend of 8th and 9th September, the Seven Stones Inn on St Martin’s will host its annual Beer, Cider, Gin and Rum Festival, showcasing drinks produced across the islands with a Taste of Scilly menu to match! Finally, on 10th September, you can indulge yourselves in the extraordinary Low Tide experience. For two to three hours only, visitors roll up their trouser legs to reach a

sandbank between Tresco and Bryher for this ultra-mini food festival that serves up bowls of locally harvested garlic mussels, seafood paella dished directly from a beached fishing boat Tresco salt beef and cill mackerel baps, all washed down with fabulous gin cocktails and prosecco to the tune of live music – an experience not to be missed! Executive Director of Islands’ Partnership tells us: “We’re delighted to be hosting our third Taste of Scilly festival this September. For an archipelago so small, Scilly boasts an extraordinary array of award-winning producers and foodie entrepreneurs; you’re never far from fresh produce and refreshment on the islands, whether it’s freshly-caught seafood, farm-grown vegetables, island reared duck and beef, homemade ice cream and fudge, and the islands’ own wine and beer. Taste of Scilly is a celebration of all the good things that are produced, reared and prepared on our tiny islands, as well as our most distinctive eateries.”

We learn all about Bude’s brand new food festival, Budelicious, sponsored by the Falcon Hotel.

W

e recently paid a visit to the fabulous Falcon Hotel, perched on the edge of Bude’s historic canal, and learned all abo t owner pert s passion for fine wines and first class dining. Then in the next issue, we introduced their sumptuous new summer menu, which, it’s fair to say, tempted more than a few taste buds here in the o ce and the team hasn t stopped there, having just announced the 2018 launch of Budelicious, an exciting new food and drink festival in Bude, for which the alcon will ser e as head arters. Showcasing the very best and varied restaurants that Bude has to offer, along with the wonderful artisan food and drink producers in the area, this new event will involve the whole community, with schools, colleges and shops being encouraged to take part, as well as a good food trail around local eateries. isitors can also expect a fantastic line up of food and drink at the Falcon Hotel on 22nd and 23rd September, followed by a trade-only Chef’s Forum on onda th eptember. As we’ve come to expect here in Cornwall, this food festival will include a number of street food vendors outside the Falcon, as well as the Artisans’ Hall, where local

producers will showcase their wares, and the Marquee, where some of the best local chefs will be demonstrating their s ills. The e ent will be led b celebrit chef Peter Gorton (a Master Chef of Great Britain and past Guide Michelin Star winner), who tells us: “I have been keen to build an event in Bude for some time now, as the town has a lot to offer by way of some great food and drink producers and eateries. r aim is to grow the delicio s event over the coming years to become an established festi al in ornwall. The e ent is sponsored b the alcon Hotel, Chadds Foodsmiths and St Austell Brewery through their Proper Job Cornish . wner of the prestigio s alcon otel Rupert Brendon, who along with his team will provide the coordination for this exciting event comments: “We’re proud that we’re able to provide the considerable human resources required to plan and exec te this complex e ent for de.

CREAM OF THE DUCHY We speak to Rebecca, co-founder of Cream Cornwall, after recently opening a new store in St Ives.

E

stablished in 2012, Cream Cornwall has become synonymous with luxurious home wares that are inspired by the beauty of this captivating county. So popular are the wares that founders Rebecca and Alison produce that they can be found in homes around the globe and of co rse in the pair s agship store in Falmouth, right here in the Duchy. Offering a wide range of products, the team also offers a bespoke interior design service. When we caught up with them recently, they delightedly informed us of the news that they are opening a second store, in the popular seaside town of St Ives. Rebecca and Alison have 45 years of experience between them in the textile and interiors industry and it’s this that has helped them create such unique designs. Centred upon traditional craftsmanship, their designs showcase their strong belief in quality and their passion and commitment to keeping their products made in Britain, many of them in their own studio in Cornwall. One example of a fabulous product made right here in the Duchy is Cream Cornwall’s stylish range of lampshades. Not only are they designed with the coast in mind, but also made from fabric printed in Staffordshire and assembled above their shop in Falmouth. We ask Rebecca about their decision to open a new store in St Ives. “We believe in retail and the experience of actually going into a shop, rather than clicking a button online. People love to touch and feel what they’re buying and we believe our shops give customers a feel good experience that is hard to emulate when buying online. We plan to open more shops in the future and,

if all goes to plan, there’s even the prospect of venturing overseas! Since opening our store in St Ives it’s been absolutely mad.” And it’s no wonder! Anybody who’s laid eyes on Cream Cornwall’s range will understand that their designs and products really are unique, but not just that; they’re stunning and what’s more, they’re built to last. When you buy a piece for yourself – whether it’s a lampshade or a s mpt o s oor c shion o can rest assured you’ve made a purchase that you and your family will treasure for years to come.

GOLF AND GRAZING

at Greens

We learn more about the Greens of Padstow story.

G

reens of Padstow is an independent family business that combines the fun of mini golf with delicious food in the restaurant-style café. Located in a stunning position overlooking the Camel Estuary, and just outside the main hubbub of town, Greens offers a tranquil spot to enjoy some food or get competitive with a game of golf. Owners Sharon and Ian Whittock tell us a bit more about what drew them to this area of Cornwall. Sharon explains: “We spent many holidays here with our boys, and pla ing mini golf with them was definitel a highlight – we were actually here on holiday when we spotted it for sale!” Ian continues: “The intention when we purchased Greens eleven years ago was to create an atmosphere where people can come and relax re ect and take some time to catch up.” The food is a re ection of the co ple s own taste and features fresh, locally sourced ingredients. an tells s e don t aspire to offer ha te cuisine, Padstow is very well catered for in that respect. The mission we set our chef, Andrew Snell, was to offer classic meals based on high quality ingredients, and the feedback we get suggests our customers really enjoy their dining experience.”

The café is beautifully decorated with deep blue tiles and industrial looking lights that give the space a trendy feel however, the real show stopper is the 180 degree view that you can admire from every table. Ian continues: “We wanted to create a place where families can come and create great memories. The mini golf is key to this, it s an inter-generational game which is perfect for families and we e designed the co rse to generate lots of la ghs t s also been tho ghtf ll landscaped so that it s an interesting place to walk through and includes beautiful sculptures from local artists: Reece Ingram, Peter Graham and Tim-Stocking-Baker. Here at Cornwall Living we re certainl loo ing forward to en o ing a game of golf this summer and, having alread p t the food to the test in last iss e s 'Tried and tasted' food review, we can tell o it passed with ing colo rs

J

DISCOVER MORE To see Jeremy at work in his studio, simply email hello@jeremysanders.co.uk to arrange a private visit.

eremy Sanders is now into his second summer living, working and painting around west Cornwall. He has been particularly inspired by the light that this part of the country enjoys at this time of year, enhanced by the fact that the Duchy is almost surrounded by water. He tells us that he is increasingly focussing on capturing those working and living in the local area and has been recreating unique events, including Flora Day in Helston and Mazey Day in Penzance. He’s also dipped into various food festivals that the region is famed for and is currently talking with some great local brands, who have been kind enough to offer him the chance to explore and paint around their businesses. This fig rati e s b ect matter has alwa s been of interest to me, having spent many years painting the streets of Cuba and South America. But it was visiting the Stanhope Forbes exhibition last summer at the Penlee House Gallery that has reignited my passion! “Forbes brilliantly and famously captured real people in their everyday lives at the same time that the impressionists were painting in France. He also worked outside –

or ‘en plein air’ – and this is something I’m striving to do much more of.” If you’ve been meaning to indulge your creative side, you can join Jeremy for a day and enjoy some one to one outdoor tuition. For just £95, which includes materials and equipment, Jeremy guarantees you’ll create a painting fit to ta e home and displa . This August, on Monday 20th until Thursday 23rd, 12pm to 7pm, and then on Friday 24th August from 10am until 4pm, Jeremy will be painting and exhibiting at the Old Lifeboat House in Porthleven. But fear not! If those dates in your diary are already booked up, you can visit Jeremy’s studio throughout the summer by appointment.

ravel as far south west as the land will take you – beyond Land’s End and into the sea – and eventually you’ll reach the Isles of Scilly, the subject of Kurt Jackson’s latest stunning exhibition. Displayed in the breathtaking gallery of the award-winning Jackson Foundation in St Just, ‘Scilly’ is comprised of works created in the rain, shine and everything in between o er the past fi e ears exploring not st the coastline, with its bright white sands and aquamarine seas, but also the land itself. From the tufty hillocks where Mediterranean insects and ora coexist with the nati e species to t mbledown cottages and owerfilled fields rt ac son peers into the unique habitats that make the Isles of Scilly such a rich and remarkable place. Kurt tells us: “The Scillies are ancient islands, steeped in mythology, where the sun seems stronger and the sky clearer. Some say they are Lyonesse – the lost land in the legend of King Arthur. Today, high tottering dry-stone perforated walls jut out of the landscape, hairy with lichen, and look as old as the ocean itself.” This arcane archipelago has been part of Kurt’s life for over 30 years, and he often visits to lay down his canvases on the wind buffeted shores in an attempt to capture their unique beauty. Perched in the open ocean and battered by the elements, the islands remain a pristine refuge from the relentless pace of modern life. However, although the winters

are mild and summers bright, they are not always a forgiving place to work. The sand invariably blows onto the canvas, the wind dries the paint too quickly, and the rain washes it away. But the resulting paintings showcase the quiet wildness of these little islands at the end of the world, from the perspective of one of Cornwall’s most evocative artists.

un by mother and daughter team Sharon and Katie, Bishop Phillpott occupies a beautiful building on New Bridge Street in Truro and is a haven for designer fashion, bringing that little piece of luxury to everyday life in Cornwall. After years of working in the fashion industry, Sharon has utilised her love of fashion and eye for style in a dream career, hand selecting wearable designer looks to bring to Cornwall. She tells us: “There are loads of fantastic things about running your own boutique, but by far one of the best has to be choosing all the beautiful stock.” Getting the 5am train to the big smoke may not be the most glamorous of beginnings but Sharon assures us that the early starts are worth it. She explains: “At each designer showroom, we have the tricky task of narrowing down a selection of items to bring to you. We don’t just choose pieces we love, we also focus on pieces that are made to last.” One of our in-house favourites is the Maison Labiche range – we absolutely love the quintessentially Parisian design. The striped tops are made with a comforting, soft fabric and detailed with French writing, in a design that immediately has me reaching for my beret and croissant! Having to source their collections a year in advance means the Bishop Phillpott team have the inside scoop on what styles will be big next season. Sharon tells us: “This autumn it’s all about red, it’s the perfect colour to lift those dull winter days, and there really is a shade to suit everyone. You’ll also see the return of some fabulous prints from Paul Smith, which are sure to be a hit!” Katie’s favourite choice for this season is a classic white shirt. She explains: “We’re also super excited to bring you the most amazing Italian brand, Balossa, specialising in white shirts – a design classic and something that every woman should have in her wardrobe.” With these labels and others including Weekend by Maxmara, 360 Cashmere, JBrand, Donna Ida and American Vintage to name but a few, Bishop Phillott promises to have it all for the coming season.

ith shops in Helston and Falmouth, Wearnes Jewellers is headed by fourth-generation Cornish jewellery designer, Sarah Corbridge and husband Adam. Sarah is the inventor of Cornish Tin & Gold™ and Cornish Tin and Silver™, unique nine carat and 18 carat gold and silver alloys which contain historic Cornish tin, salvaged from a shipwreck which lay on the seabed for more than 140 years! Their da ghters now the fifth generation – are also well and truly involved in the business, with one of them working hard to shape up its online presence. Sarah tells us: “Both our daughters have been making jewellery since they were able to hold a piercing saw, and their designs are so on trend. They too are taking commissions and designing for Cornish Tin & Gold.” One of them has studied Business, Photography and Retail Jewellery, while the other has a degree in Performance Sportswear Design, so between them, they bring a lot to the table! Sarah herself was voted as ‘Designer of the Year’ at the Cornish Brides Awards in 2014. Her work is appreciated by surfers as far away as Hawaii, ancestors of Cornish miners in Canada and America and business people in Hong Kong, as well as, of course, Cornish locals embracing the Duchy’s wonderful mining heritage and a general love of Cornwall. She

also alludes to undertaking commissions from the very highest of places! Drawing her inspiration from the gorgeous surroundings of Cornwall’s coast and countryside, Sarah is also able to extract from her clients what is most important to them. Wearnes, which is a member of the National Association of Jewellers, specialises in undertaking jewellery commissions and restoration/repair work, which is carried out at their extensive four-bench workshop beneath the Falmouth boutique by experienced goldsmiths, with services including special wedding ring services, claw re-tipping, stone replacement, chain repairs, soldering, re-rhodium plating of white gold and more. All of Wearnes’ diamonds are con ict free and they love to recycle your precious metal or remodel a piece into your own bespoke, special item of jewellery. There are also specialist wedding ring services and payment plans available, so whatever you’re looking for and for whiche er occasion o can find the perfect piece at a price that suits your budget.”

ost of us know what we should be doing when it comes to weight loss, stress relief or stopping smoking, but few of us do it. This is the very real issue that Cornish based coaching practice Renewu addresses to help clients achieve and sustain long lasting changes. Renewu offers a range of options to clients: all incl si e fi e-da residential retreats one-ho r wee l coaching sessions face-toface or b phone and intensi e one-to-one residential programmes. Jill Wright, founder of Renewu takes a holistic view of body and mind. A key element to her approach is to look at people’s self-beliefs to identif those that are not helping her clients and holding them back from getting the results they want. This can be applied to any health and wellness goal, whether it’s weight loss, stopping smoking, boosting energy or reducing stress. By focusing on what clients see as the future versions of themselves, Jill helps them to make this a reality they can believe in and start to make happen now. Jill couples this with advice on how, when, why and what to eat. She does stress that this is not about dieting, but about eating a healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner, introducing movement to their day and relaxation techniques. This sets them up for inevitable success and turns these healthy habits into behaviours that last.

ll coaching offers a safe non- dgemental and nurturing environment for clients to start their transformational o rne . s well as exploring the self-beliefs and eating habits that hold people back from keeping off those extra pounds, the retreats include complimentary treatments and acti ities s ch as re exolog massage and movement, helping people to relax and unwind. Jill explains: “The changes that are introduced are simple and easy to sustain. I’m passionate that the experience should be en o able and not tort o s. This is evident in the fact that Jill insists on serving what she calls ‘normal, everyday food’. “People should leave feeling refreshed, revived and committed to a healthier, more positive lifestyle. Clients are amazed at the impact the coaching has on all aspects of their li es the find the feel good abo t the way they look, which can strengthen their romantic relationships, and their confidence can gi e them the impet s to start to drive their career forward again. The boost in energy also means they have more quality time with their kids. The positive res lts are far reaching and long lasting.

| ADVICE

Maximise

YOUR RETIREMENT Even if retirement isn’t far away, there are a number of steps you could take to increase your eventual retirement income.

H

arris Begley provides some areas that you may want to consider and discuss in order to increase your retirement fund.

Make sure you have details for all your pension pots Locate pension pots that you may have forgotten about. The Pension Advisory Service and the Pension Tracing Service can help you trace forgotten pension pots. Remember to take your State Pension into account. Check your State Pension entitlement to help determine if and how much you’re likely to receive when you reach State Pension age – and whether you’ll need to top it up. Redirect regular spending into your pension If you have a regular expense that no longer needs to be paid, you could redirect that extra money into your pension instead. As an example once o finish pa ing off a car loan you can use those payments for your pension fund. This is a quick and simple way to give your retirement savings a boost while sticking to your everyday budget. It can also be an idea, if your income rises, to put all or part of the difference towards your retirement fund. This can be done in a number of ways, including by increasing the sum you contribute to a workplace or personal pension. Consolidate your pensions If you have paid into several different pensions o er the ears and find it hard to sta on top of all of the paperwork, you could consider consolidating your pensions into one plan. This will also help to keep track of your overall retirement sum and whether or not you’re on track towards your targets. Before you switch, it’s essential to obtain professional advice to check that you don’t

have any guarantees that you’ll lose by moving your pension savings to another scheme, and that the charges you pay aren’t higher in the new scheme. Not all pension types can or should be transferred. It’s important that you now and compare the feat res and benefits of the plan(s) you’re thinking of transferring. Consider retiring a little later than planned Delaying your retirement might give your pension fund more chance to grow. Remember though, if your pension fund remains invested, the value could go down as well as up and you may not get back what you put in. If you defer your retirement, it’s also important to check whether this will affect an state benefits you’re entitled to. Working part time for a while after you finish f ll time wor might enable o to dela drawing money from your State Pension or your pension, meaning your money may last longer when you do retire. You could even consider trying something new, like setting up your own business. Becoming your own boss could be a good way to stay active and keep earning, too! For more ways to maximise your retirement, contact financial ad isors att egle or Steve Rusga.

ENVIRONMENTALLY AWARE ARCHITECTURE We meet Ian Armstrong of ARCO2 Architecture, an inspiring Cornish company at the cutting edge of both design and sustainability. ABOVE Mellalue, designed by ARCO2 Architecture

W

ith a by-line: 'beautiful buildings that don’t cost the earth,' the ARCO2 Architecture team emphasise that their projects are both cost effective and environmentally aware. Director Ian Armstrong tells us: “ARCO2 don’t just build o a dwelling or o ce we create homes with benefits to enhance o r lifest le literall building homes for future generations.” This building approach is evident in the creation of ‘Mellalue’, an outstanding coastal property designed and built by ARCO2’s inhouse construction company. When creating and building this remarkable property, the ARCO2 team worked closely with their client to achieve their vision to the highest possible standard, whilst also taking into consideration the impact on the surrounding environment and neighbours. Ian continues: “as a RIBA Chartered Architects Practice we have a unique, innovative and human approach to design which is evident in this stunning house.” The new dwelling replaces a mid-20th Century bungalow, which was of little architectural merit and didn’t make the most of the beautiful site. ARCO2 stepped in and with a brief from the client to construct a low

energy, contemporary home that could accommodate a family with teenagers and elderly parents; the team made moves to construct this impressive property. Ian emphasises that: “one of the key design considerations was to retain the sea views for the neighbouring building behind and improve their outlook.” With this in mind, the house was designed with a curved roof to maximise space, minimise impact and enhance the neighbour’s perspective. Ian continues: “It’s one of the most sustainable dwellings in terms of building fabric and energy usage in the area, and demonstrates that a strong but simple design concept can be really striking.” So, if you want to create a beautiful home with minimal impact on the environment, then get in touch for your free consultation and make moves to secure yourself a home and help secure the planet for future generations.

CHARITY |

SUPPORTING

Cornwall's communities Since launching the Cornwall Glass Fund in 2009, Cornwall Glass has granted more than £65K to worthy local organisations, groups and charities across the south west.

T

his year, Cornwall Glass is celebrating 40 years of business and to mark this milestone, they are awarding 40 grants of £400 from their Cornwall Glass Fund to community groups throughout the county. Cornwall Glass Chairman, Mark Mitchell tells us: “Being part of the community is an important part of who we are and what we do. We feel privileged to have directly supported 65 local groups who are working to improve the lives of people in their areas. In this special 40th year of our business, we wanted to do something to mark this important achievement.” Cornwall Glass is a family owned business specialising in the manufacture, production and installation of glass and glazing products for commercial, trade and domestic customers. With 13 branches throughout Cornwall and the south west, the company has supported local communities since its foundation in 1978. The Cornwall Glass Fund is managed by the Cornwall Community Foundation (CCF) to provide funding for community groups. The fund has grown and to date has invested more than £60,000 to 65 local groups, organisations and charities within Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Tamas Haydu, CCF Chief Executive, comments: “Cornwall Glass are an exemplary business having invested with us over the long term to ensure they are always helping local Cornish communities. The company’s

40th anniversary is a great achievement and marking it with 40 grant awards of £400 will go a long way towards helping more community projects across Cornwall.” Cornwall Glass colleagues take an active role in the decision-making process for the grant applications to the fund and this year they will be prioritising projects that demonstrate bringing people together in their local community. With so many worthy causes, this is far from being an easy task and the response for these modest grants this year from grass root groups, coming forward, has been amazing. So many people are helping others in their community, giving their time and efforts to help with isolation, peer to peer support, community gardens, accessible activities for all, the list goes on. As is the case in many places across the UK, while Cornwall is a beautiful place to be, it has a side that’s easily forgotten about – one of isolation, child poverty, low wages and ill health. Mark explains: “We can’t make everything better, but we aim and hope that it will help enrich the lives of some of those most in need.”

MAIN Cornwall Glass are awarding 40 grants of £400! INSET, BELOW 65 community groups in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly have benefited from the Cornwall Glass Fund!
