fter a busy summer, what better way to experience some me-time than in one of Cornwall’s amazing spas? This issue, we’ve been on a mission to bring you a selection of the best places to relax and unwind. Think craggy clifftop oases of calm, hidden riverside retreats where cares melt away, and chic spaces of peace in which you can revive mind, body and soul. Each spa has its own unique feel, while all offer the most wonderful of treatments. Turn to page 21 to begin your journey of relaxation. If you can tear yourself away from your moment of serenity, then our thoughts also turn to interiors this month. Now that the weather has got colder, it’s time to hunker down and an ideal moment to take stock and make sure that your home is winter ready. Find inspiration for your home and interior from page 34. Christmas is also on the horizon, and with so many incredible makers, artists and artisans in the Duchy, getting your festive shopping done in good time is a breeze. From page 50 e sho case st a fe of orn all s finest ith somethin for every taste. Finally, we are delighted to introduce our readers to Dive Project Cornwall. Tackling an environmental problem close to our hearts, plastic pollution in our oceans, this innovative venture dives into the problem (both literally and metaphorically!) with a unique combination of education and experience. We urge you to help make a difference; turn to page 65 to find out how.

With stand-up paddleboarding becoming one of the fastest growing sports in the last few years, and especially over the recent lockdowns, a Cornwall based family have made a few deft moves in creating and opening a new retail operation based on the outskirts of Wadebridge. Previously having run and owned a local residential outdoor centre, providing activity holidays and courses for schools and adults, which was adversely affected by the pandemic, the family took the decision to make some radical changes to their lives by closing the centre and setting up this new venture in late 2020. Due to the various loc do ns the retail nit finall opened properly in April 2021. The family bring with them an incredible depth of knowledge and alifications from t ent ears coaching and instructing within the centre. They have created a unique shopping experience in the retail unit, where the atmosphere is relaxed, and the team are

keen to promote a friendly and helpful service. With the addition of a new me anine oor a fantastic spacio s and airy display area has been created for hundreds of surf, paddle and body boards. There are also hydrofoils, wings, and foil boards along with windsurfers available to view and purchase in the shop. The return of the

Cornish Winter Fair One of Cornwall’s most highly anticipated food and farming events is back on the calendar for 2021! The Cornish Winter Fair, held at the Royal Cornwall Events Centre in Wadebridge on Saturday 20th November, celebrates the best of Cornwall’s farming and food industry. There is set to be a wide range of trade stands, not to mention the best in Cornish food and drink, as well as hand-made gifts and products, perfect for a bit of festive retail therapy!

Autumn brings with it many challenges for gardeners, from fertilising the lawn and raking the leaves, to ensuring your fence is up-to-task for the turbulent weather ahead. Fortunately, ColourFence has found ways in which you can reduce the impact of the changing seasons on your garden. Firstly, choosing the right time to install your fence is key. It can be hard not to disturb plants, but with emptier borders, autumnthrough-winter is a great time, leaving you with a stunning backdrop for summer but without the need to paint in the spring. Secondly, ensuring your fence is secure is paramount. ColourFence can withstand wind gusts of up to 130mph, eliminating fallen panels. What’s more, the steel it’s made from won’t rust, warp or peel, and many customers see it as ‘weatherproof’, with storms no longer leaving a large repair bill in their wake. With uncertainty on the horizon for our energy costs, there is no better time to consider going solar.  ABOVE

Solar power is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint

oncern for imminent increases in our energy bills has many of us looking for a solution to the uncertainty that comes with relying on the national grid for our electricity, and the experts at GreenGen understand how important it is for us all to be reducing our carbon footprint and looking for ways to go green. With over ten years’ experience in solar PV installations, the team at GreenGen have become one of the south west’s leading solar providers. Solar power is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint, move away from grid dependence, and bring your monthly bills down too. As we can expect our bills to go up sharply in the near future, what better time could there be to consider solar power for your home? The energy generated from solar panels can power your entire home or business, and by replacing demand from the grid with renewable solar power, solar installations are dramatically reducing the carbon footprint of homes and businesses all across the country, whilst keeping your bills in check too! Any excess energy can be sold back to the grid through the Smart Export Guarantee, but there is a way to retain as much of your energy as possible to replace grid demand during the evening or overnight. By employing a battery storage system

alongside your solar PV, you’ll save even more money and could be almost entirely independent from the national grid. As a certified installer of solar and atter solutions, GreenGen offers installations to customers throughout the south west. Offering varying storage capacities and continuous discharge power, strong warranties and market-leading functionality, GreenGen has a battery solution for all existing and new solar PV customers. With free surveys, quotes and helpful advice from the team, GreenGen has a variety of options to suit anyone’s needs, and you can feel at ease in the absence of pressurised selling tactics. Informative proposals are provided after a friendly chat about what would work best for you and your home or business, so why not get in touch with the local, experienced experts for a discussion on how you can take your first step to ards controllin o r ener bills and reducing the carbon footprint of your home?

It’s a team effort, only when all the links come together does it work for that person.” Just 48 hours later, doctors at the hospital were amazed when Chris was sat up in bed talking. A LOCAL CRAFT Immerse yourself in a world of creativity and skill with Inspire Makers in Falmouth.

ABOVE  Hand-crafted, locally made products from a range of artists and craftspeople INSET  Based in the creative hub of Falmouth

eaturing work from over 50 contemporary Cornish, design-led artists and craftspeople, Inspire Makers is home to an eclectic mix of well-established names and emerging talent over a wide range of unique products. Now into its second year, founder of Inspire Makers, Vicki Glaister, reminisces on her decision to start this business: “During 25 years in high street retail I witnessed first hand the race to the ottom on price the rise of the throwaway culture, and the decimation of the high street as we know it. I believe the way back for retail is to focus on local communities, local businesses, and well-made long-lasting goods – mindful and sustainable shopping, if you will. “I opened my doors in June 2020 in the midst of the Covid pandemic and have been heartened by the change in people's attitude to spending. It is wonderful to see the connection customers make with locally made, handcrafted products, either through appreciating the workmanship, the story of the artist, or as a memento of Cornwall.” Alongside a wide collection of high-quality, locally produced jewellery, ceramics, textiles, art, stationery and homewares, Inspire Makers is also home to an exciting workshop programme, inviting all budding artists and makers to begin their own creative journey.

With workshops available to book from now until the end of the year, and plans for 2022 already underway, you can choose between a variety of half-day taster or full day sessions, and as most of the classes require no previous experience you can feel confident in tr in a ne ho nder the guiding hand of an expert. “Autumn is a great time to learn a new skill as you can get yourself set up for the colder winter months with an enjoyable indoor activity or perhaps, dare we say, start making your own Christmas gifts,” says Vicki. “With everything from bookbinding and printing to glass fusing and jewellery making, there is bound to be something to spark your interest.”

Fourth Element introduces a wetsuit that truly embodies their OceanPositive vision, designed for water lovers and ocean enthusiasts.

MAIN The Surface wetsuit, perfect for snorkelling, freediving and other water sports INSET  Fourth Element keeps plastic bottles out of landfill and the ocean by using them in their products

s a 12-year-old boy growing up in the coastal town of Porthleven, fourth element’s founder Paul Strike spent seemingly endless days in and on the water. Countless hours snorkelling and freediving led to a passion for the sea that nearly 50 years on drives the innovation of this emerging Cornish brand – designing sustainable products using recycled marine plastics and, its most recent wetsuit, the Surface – a truly OceanPositive suit for every ocean enthusiast. OceanPositive is a concept of which fo rth element is stifia l pro d concept that has been adopted by other brands and organisations, OceanPositive describes products and practices designed to limit impact on the ocean environment. his p rs it is firml at the heart of fo rth element which has grown to become one of the world’s leading dive brands and increasingly part of the consciousness of water lovers and ocean enthusiasts, from open water swimmers to paddleboarders. “Our passion for the sea was the reason we started fourth element in 1999, but since then we have become increasingly aware of the pressures that are placed on our environment and the responsibility we have as a company to work to protect the ocean. In 2014 we reached the conclusion that we could not just talk about this, we had to act. We have made some huge adjustments in recent years and we’re proud of how far we’ve come, but we know there’s still a way

to go,” says Paul, Managing Director and Head of Research and Development. “Being OceanPositive stems from not just what we do in the ocean but also what we do in our everyday lives. From the garments we produce to the packaging they are in and the projects that we support along the way, everything we do leads to ensuring a more sustainable business that is good for the ocean.” The vision could not be more clearly embodied than in the Surface wetsuit – a suit made from Yulex Pure™, a certified s staina le plant-based alternative to neoprene, lined with fabrics made from recycled post-consumer plastic bottles. It’s perfect for surface watersports such as paddleboarding and swimming, as well as snorkelling and freediving. This is a suit grown, not made, and designed to have minimal impact on the ocean.

lastic is entering our oceans at an alarming rate. According to Ocean Conservancy, eight million metric tons of plastic makes its way into our oceans every year, with plastic production and consumption predicted to double over the next 10 years. As a PADI Divemaster living in Cornwall, this is a subject very close to the heart of Andy Forster, Project Director of i e ro ect orn all a not for profit Community Interest Company dedicated to tackling plastic pollution in our oceans by introducing teenagers across the UK to diving and so empowering them to become the ocean in encers of the f t re “Dive Project Cornwall has two parts,” explains Andy. “The education programme is designed to reach thousands of children across the UK via a suite of educational tools, videos and other resources available to schools through the Marine Conservation Society. We are also communicating with millions of adults through our audience providers in order to raise awareness. In collaboration with these media partners, collaborating charities and sponsors, which include leading national dive brands such as Suunto, Beuchat and Cornwall-based fourth element, we are able to share our message across social media and various other communication channels. Our current reach is just shy of 10 million adults already.”

The second part of Dive Project Cornwall is an amazing experience programme, available to all secondary schools across the UK. Through a nation-wide competition, schools can compete for the opportunity to bring 20 of their students from each of the 20 regions across the UK, on a week’s residential course at Porthkerris. That's a total of 400 lucky teens set to visit Cornwall’s premier dive centre, where they will be trained e perienced alified nstr ctors and lea e as certified as Open Water Scuba Divers. “Not only will the children leave as alified pen ater c a i ers the ill also learn first hand from leadin marine industry experts, the important part our oceans play in the survival of our planet and how this impacts our very own existence,” adds Andy. “The aim is that these children will leave as ambassadors for the project, sharing their experience and knowledge with friends and families, so activating a network of campaigners whose mission is aligned with our own; to save the ocean.”

LOCAL Flagship SPAR store in Carnon Downs adopts a welcome, fresh focus on all-things local.  INSET

Fresh, Cornish, what more could you ask for?  BELOW

Supporting local farmers

fter a complete restructure in May, the new SPAR store at Carnon Downs – part of Appleby Westward, the regional distribution company for the national chain here in the south est has recorded si nificant increases in sales and c stomer n m ers in its first three months of trading. The £400,000 scheme, which incorporated the new SPAR UK store design standard, saw the creation of a state-of-the-art, ne t eneration a ship for pple Westward’s stable of 111 company-owned stores throughout the region. The updates themselves are, of course, part of the reason for the ptic in tra c and sales t in order to fully analyse the recent success, it’s important to note that the store has a strong focus on provenance, with wide-ranging local Cornish products available across many categories. Add to this an up-front butchery counter (branded with the Cornish ‘Goon Karnen Kigti’) and there is a clear emphasis throughout the store on fresh, Cornish goods. Butchery, fresh fruit and vegetables and other chilled produce are all at the front of the store as customers walk in, while a d cor of dar re fi t res and ood effect tiles feature strongly among the warm colo rs materials and finishes across the store. That’s not all, either, with other

innovations including the introduction of a self ser ice n rapped refill station where customers can bring their own containers and buy loose products such as n ts cereals rice and o r “We are immensely proud of this redevelopment, and it has made a hugely positive impact on our customers,” says Dean. “It is the biggest redevelopment scheme we have undertaken and it involved a major logistical process to take it from concept to completion. e redesi ned the store to re ect the particular needs of our Carnon Downs customers, who are very enthusiastic about local products and sustainability.” And he’s right: with a real focus on local Cornish goods, plus messages throughout conveying support for local suppliers and producers, ith ornish oods identifia le ornish a stic ers and it s perhaps no onder the new Carnon Downs SPAR has been such a big hit with those determined to join the steadily growing movement towards buying, and supporting, ‘local’.

hristmas is synonymous with celebration, joy and laughter, yet for some, when they have lost someone treasured, it can also be a time of great sadness. This Christmas, the team at Cornwall Hospice Care invite you to join them to remember loved ones in a collective act of remembrance during which you can look back fondly on the memories made at Christmas’s past. “This year I’m pleased to say we can be together once again after the pandemic put a stop to the 2020 event. We’ll gather in the stunning surroundings of Truro Cathedral on Sunday 5th December at 7pm,” explains Oli Hoare, Head of Fundraising. “The service will be led by Reverend Canon Alan Bashforth and will include readings from our hospice nurses and music by local choirs, whilst the names of loved ones will be displayed in our special remembrance film in the ire andles representin all the lives we are remembering, will be lit throughout the service until the cathedral is full of light.” To place your dedication, please visit www.

Dedications will feature during the service as well as within the Book of Remembrance and afterwards in the online book. “In a new development for 2021, the service will also be live streamed, so you can still enjoy this lovely remembrance event while lighting a candle of your own at home,” concludes Oli. “All are welcome to remember together and you’ll be warmly welcomed.”
