magine if you can, strolling along a deserted beach where the only footprints in the sand are your own; or walking along a quiet coastal path where all you can hear are the sounds of the ocean and the call of the circling seabirds. You would be forgiven for thinking I was referring to a deserted exotic island, but that’s not the case – this is Cornwall in the shoulder months. With that in mind, our cover feature this month explores why this is the perfect time of year to stay in the Duchy. In conversation with staycation experts from across the county, we discover how best to make the most of your autumn-winter holiday on Cornish shores (from page 20). We’ve also pinpointed some wonderful places to stay, turn to page 47 for our curated selection.

Elsewhere, our property section (from page 29) showcases homes of distinction that are currently on the market; Cornish food and drink producers take centre stage from page 55 and there’s a chance to win some awesome prizes in this issue’s competitions, including an ultimate staycation worth over £1,795, from page 87.

Time to consider holiday letting?

The Little Gin Shack back

in full swing With UK staycations on the rise, and with the trend looking set to continue for the next few years at least, Cornwall is at the top of the list for many, prompting local holiday home owners to find ways to maximise their bookings. Cornish Horizons, part of the Original Cottages family, is one of Cornwall’s leading holiday cottage agencies. Whether it’s a future investment, a new and exciting renovation project, or a family home full of memories, Cornish Horizons’ local team of dedicated experts are ready to make your holiday home a firm favourite for holidaymakers, year after year. “After three decades in the business, we know what gives properties that extra pulling power,” explains Annabel Leach, Cornish Horizons’ Senior Property Recruiter. “And with our dedicated local property experts, backed by a recognisable national brand, we’re proud to say we

can offer you the best of both worlds, from high-impact marketing to local personal service and property maintenance solutions.” ornish orizons has five o es throughout Cornwall in Padstow, Fowey, Looe, St Ives and Porthleven. “This means we’re never far away from your property should you need us,” continues Annabel. “Our local experts know these places like their own back gardens. Because often, that’s what they are. And like with any family, we are here to talk whenever you need us.”

The Little Gin Shack’s move to 35 Molesworth Street in October last year, in business owner, Neil’s words, “is the best move we could have made!” Despite the di ult rules and restri tions that characterised the pandemic, The Little Gin Shack has quickly returned to operating at full capacity, offering guests premium gins from Cornwall, the UK and around the world.

With no restrictions on owner weeks, no joining or annual fees, plus competitive commission rates, now’s the perfect time for your property to meet its fullest potential.

This range is complemented by a series of Cornish rums, vodkas, brandy, wines and bottled beers and ciders, which can be enjoyed on site alongside one of the newly introduced cheese and charcuterie platters, or as a purchase to take home. When it comes to choosing your tipple, the Gin Shack doesn’t have a menu. Instead, says Neil: “Our fully trained staff prefer to talk to you about your preferences, and provide you with complimentary samples to try before you decide. You can also book a fantastic Gin Sampling session – just contact us for details!”

Achieving results with

resourceful innovation

Locally built and family run, Kestrel Specialist Handrail Systems is leading the way in the world of handrail applications here in the south west, and is making all sorts of balcony dreams come true around Cornwall. The history of Kestrel SHS began with Bruce and Charlie Davies, who went on to collaborate with the Coastal Group. Now the sole business of Bruce and Katie Grant, who pay testament to the ground work of the Kestrel Brand, the business has become synonymous to all handrail applications; from industrial applications of galvanised modular tube systems to development of full stainless-steel systems, including a full component range of both. Bruce Grant has a wealth of experience within the construction industry, including installation of balconies and balustrading which has lent itself well to working with customers and offering workable solutions, with Katie working

alongside him. While providing straightforward installations, the Kestrel team pride themselves on their innovative bespoke service, and their ability to meet any need or customer vision. This particular project was something different for Bruce, where the customer had looked at stainless steel balconies but didn’t feel they quite suited the property. After making some suggestions, Bruce was able to develop a design that the team hadn’t used before in order to achieve the right structure for this home. With a little bit of determination and creativity, the team at Kestrel were able to achieve a beautifully streamlined design without imposing on the property, providing a safe and aesthetically pleasing result yet again. A proper Cornish pub experience For an authentic Cornish local pitstop, The New Inn Tywardreath is an absolute must. Welcoming to all, and dog and family friendly, The New Inn offers an accommodating warmth that will invite you to pull up a seat and drink in your surroundings, along with a real ale or two from the extensive collection.

The Jackson Foundation – a large, multiple award-winning art-space in St Just – tells the story of Kenidjack Valley, the ‘almost-most’ westerly valley in Cornwall through two interlinked exhibitions. With Kenidjack: A Cornish Valley, acclaimed artist Kurt Jackson captures the beauty of a place spilling over with natural treasures and dramatic topography with a stunning collection of paintings and sculpture inspired by the journey of a small stream from its source on the moors, down through the valley and into the sea; celebrating the sights, sounds, history, heritage and wildlife encountered along the way. Valley Lives refle ts on the fa t that Kenidjack Valley has been inhabited for 6,000 years. It has been a place of mining, metalwork and agriculture. Along the valley there were shops, a Sunday school, places of recreation and manufacture. Some are gone but a thriving community lives on. This collection of images and artefacts aims to tell the human story of this valley. The Jackson Foundation is open Tuesday to Saturday. Navigating a Covid year

Cornwall Hospice Care has published Our resilience and revival, the story of the toughest period in the charity’s 40-year history. In a detailed and moving account, the digital publication reviews the extraordinary issues the Cornish healthcare charity faced and the determined way in which its staff and volunteer teams fought ba during the finan ial year. Paul Brinsley is the charity’s Chief Executive: “Far from celebrating our Ruby anniversary, we faced dark times. Covid-19 forced us to close shops, stop our fundraising activities and concentrate on keeping our key workers safe and our hospices open 24/7 for those end-of-life patients who needed us. With our income generating activities having been severely hampered, we’re saving money by sharing a digital version of Our resilience and revival on our website rather than printing copies and sending them out by post.” For more information visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk

Presenting the artisan collection

“Creativity doesn’t wait for that perfect moment. It fashions its own perfect moments out of ordinary ones.” – Bruce Garrabrandt. The creative team at Jo Downs Handmade Glass are continuing to launch innovative new Artisan Collections which can now been seen across all the galleries in Cornwall and at Sunningdale in Berkshire. The wave of interest in unique and limited-edition art pieces has grown over the summer months, with Jo’s popular galleries being busier than ever: “We have definitely seen an in rease in ustomers looking for that special piece of artwork that refle ts them, their style and the exceptional atmosphere of Cornwall.” The Artisan Collections have been inspired by the stunning landscape and coastline around Cornwall including Daymer Bay and Lamorna Cove. The

golden sands and lapping waves of Daymer Bay have been transformed into beautiful sculptural art pieces and wall installations, whereas Lamorna Cove has influen ed the reation of glass art with a stunning blend of textural golden yellows, amethysts and ocean blues. Tucked away on Polmorla Walk in Wadebridge, north Cornwall, Wave 7 Gallery is a long-established art haven run by Victoria Mead, a practising artist and sculptor. The gallery has been exhibiting quality art for more than 15 years and, until recently, was based in a converted barn near Trelights. The recent move to Polmorla Walk affords Victoria a larger space in which to feature the work of some incredible artists. In fact, the gallery takes pride in showcasing not only artists who live and work in Cornwall, but also those from further afield, in luding top artists in their field as well as up-and-coming talent. This incredible space offers everything from stunning landscape paintings (like those pictured) to adorn your wall, to a diverse range of sculptural and

News & views Looking to start your adopted family?

Could you give a loving home to a sibling group? As part of this year’s National Adoption Week campaign, Cornwall Council Together for Families is reaching out to prospective adopters across the duchy who might be able to offer a forever home to a sibling group. Did you know that there are currently 2,030 children waiting to be adopted in England, and of those 890 are part of a family group? 61% of adopters said that adopting children with their brothers and sisters has been the most benefi ial fa tor in their children’s adoption journey, while 88% of parents that adopted brothers and sisters say the positives outweigh any challenges. Most people deciding to start or grow their family through adoption will think about welcoming one child at a time. However, if you want a family, adopting brothers and sisters together means that you only have to go through the process once and you will have increased support.

award winning

Having a brother or sister who has been there all along can help adopted children to feel safe, settle quickly into their new home and provide them with ongoing companionship, mutual learning and emotional support throughout their lives. In fact, for many of us, our relationships with our brothers and sisters will be our longest-lasting relationships. Adopted children can sometimes bring their own challenges so adopting a family group could feel daunting but there is support available as well as the support you will get from your family and friends, including support groups, training, workshops and more specialised therapy. S

ummer 2021 has seen an extremely positive shift from the lockdowns and government restrictions that have characterised our way lives since the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic. And whilst that didn’t mean we could suddenly ignore the dangers of Coronavirus – even now it is something we must continue to protect ourselves and each other from – it did open up the door for UK holidaymakers to make their way to Cornish shores, and it’s fair to say that summer 2021 was surely one of the busiest on record! But we are by no means experts, which is why we decided to take this opportunity to refle t and as the opinions of those who are; to discern their views on the U stay ation trend, spe ifi ally here in ornwall, and to find out whether it is one we can expect to continue. More than that, as the weather starts to cool, we wanted to curate an insider’s guide to making the most of our wonderful county, as summer turns to autumn, and inevitably winter. pea ing first with eorge dward Collins, Managing Director of Cornish Traditional Cottages (corncott.com), we learn that the upward trend of UK staycations is, at least in part, a result of restrictions on those who might otherwise have travelled abroad for their summer breaks. With this in mind, he says: “Cornwall has been given a fantastic opportunity to showcase the county and its hospitality industry and, if we as businesses have got it right, then I think that we will see many who have holidayed here for the first time return and be ome regular visitors.” Catherine Coad, Brand Manager for Cornish Horizons (cornishhorizons. co.uk), agrees, explaining: “Over the last 18 months, a wider group of people have dis overed ornwall and the benefits of holidaying in the UK. I think combined with these benefits, as well as the onfusion and uncertainty of holidaying abroad, Cornwall is set to continue as a popular holiday destination for many, even as holidaying abroad becomes easier.

“We know from speaking to customers that many enjoyed their staycation to Cornwall so much, that they’re already planning their next UK break,” Catherine continues. “With our bookings for next year signifi antly up at this point in time compared to previous years, we certainly believe this trend will continue.” So, what about an autumn or winter break in the Duchy? Surely once the weather begins to cool off, being so close to the sea loses its appeal? Wrong! As Phoebe from Housel Bay hotel (houselbay.com) says: “We celebrate every season here. a h season sees the vista of the Lizard peninsula transform, with something new to experience whenever you choose to visit.” In fact, this is true of the whole of Cornwall, and as long as you’re near the sea, Phoebe’s recommendations of stargazing, exploring secluded coves and soaking in the stunning winter sunsets and dramatic winter storms, are pastimes not just reserved for the UK’s most southerly point. Although it has to be said, on the Lizard, from your base at ousel ay, they are especially spectacular! “The thing we tell our guests about autumn is that it can surprise you,” says hil endall, founder of orever ornwall Unique Retreats (forevercornwall.co.uk).

BELOW This close to the sea, it would be rude not to take your lunch al fresco!

“The crowds will have faded away, so beaches are yours to enjoy, along with the last drops of summer sun and the warm (ish) seas.” Phil recommends making the most of the autumn swells, but also iterates if you’re looking for a more relaxed experience, that open-water swimming, with the right kit, is still an option – particularly on the south coast. To put it a different way, as Catherine says: “It doesn’t matter what time of year you visit Cornwall; you will be sure to experience some of Britain’s best coastal towns, villages and attractions, including the Eden Project, Minack Theatre and so much more!” In fact, she continues: “Autumn is one of my favourite times of year in Cornwall. The county is quieter, the weather is still warm, and the countryside starts to embrace a vibrant golden glow, and there are many adventures to be had from wild swimming and woodland foraging. “The winter is also wonderful, being able to enjoy rejuvenating walks along quiet sandy beaches before snuggling up in front of a roaring open fire to eep you warm. Although very different to a summer staycation, autumn and winter in Cornwall still have so much to offer.” Indeed, no matter when you decide to visit Cornwall, no trip here would be complete without a trip to the beach. Among many others, Catherine recommends Rock beach and Daymer Bay, both of which “offer fantastic views across the Camel Estuary and to Padstow with plenty of sand at high tide and are both great spots for watching windsurfing. he also suggests wal ing the South West Coast Path around to Polzeath, if you have time. “You won’t be disappointed!”

Louise from Escape to St Ives (escapetostives.co.uk), refers to the quieter pace of life that you can enjoy at this time of year, “where you can experience St Ives without the crowds and enjoy wave watching from a harbour front café with a hot chocolate.” Another great thing about this time of year, says Louise, is that “many beaches are open to dogs from the autumn onwards”, and if you are travelling with your furry friend, Cornwall is home to a wealth of dog-friendly beaches, venues and attractions. So, the beaches and coast paths are quieter, the water is yet to fully cool down and there is still plenty for both humans and hounds alike to do. What about the food? Well, whether it’s a hotel break or a self-catered stay that tickles your fancy, autumn-through-winter is a time for capitalising on the county’s famed abundance of seasonal meat, seafood and produce. For self-caterers, George says: “Local markets and farm shops are still open to source some exceptional produce to cook back at your cottage. Alternatively, there is always the option to eat out!” If you are hoping to sample the county’s best restaurants during your time here, then we wholeheartedly recommend taking Phil’s advice: “Book, book, book ahead! The quieter months are when foodies roam Cornwall to experience the best Cornish seafood”, which means booking ahead to secure a table at your chosen restaurant is a must. “This is also a time when mussels and oysters are at their best,” says Phil, “so make sure you try some of these local delicacies.” Onto the all-important accommodation and we return once again to Phil, who tells us: “A cottage with a woodburner will be the best decision you can make. There’s nothing like cosying up next to a roaring fire after a blustery wal or i y swim in the

ituated in the very heart of Portloe – one of Cornwall’s most soughtafter locations – Carradale is a spacious, four-bedroom family home with the potential to create further accommodation with an annexe, subject to the necessary consents. A rarity to the market, it’s remarkable to find a deta hed modern house set within a large parcel of land right in the centre of this harbourside village. It’s no surprise then that this has been the cherished family home of the current vendors since its construction more than 40 years ago, in fact the only reason for its appearance on the market now is a need to downsize. Boasting versatile, reverse-level accommodation, with access from the outside to both the upper and lower floors, the main living space can be found on the upper ground floor, with a formal dining room, spacious living room, kitchen/breakfast room and utility room, as well as a double en-suite bedroom. An additional three large bedrooms lie on the lower ground floor, one of whi h boasts its own sitting room and en suite. With ample off-road parking for several vehicles, plus a large detached garage currently used for boat-building and built to match the same standards of the house, the home also has beautifully manicured and landscaped gardens, bordered by a stream. The gardens stretch up along a shallow

valley, where you’ll also find a paddo , stable, tack-room and adjacent aviary, suitable for use as kennels if required. In short, this has to be one of Portloe’s most spacious and versatile homes, with almost endless potential for any number of uses. Add to this the fact that the home has been maintained to an exceptional standard, and a viewing at the first opportunity comes highly recommended. At a time when properties such as these have never been more coveted, Carradale is unlikely to remain on the market for long.

We take a look into the unique and imaginative conversion of a stunning Victorian church that came with a fascinating local history.

S

ituated in the charming countryside location of Baldhu, just outside of Truro, can be found a rather special piece of architecture dating back over 170 years, beautifully preserved and thoughtfully renovated to create the most stri ing family home, fle ed with original period detailing amongst a fresh and contemporary framing. ower ouse represented a rare opportunity for the new owners to reside in a uni ue pie e of ornish history, with the church having originally been constructed in for the everend illiam aslam. Designed by the noted Ecclesiastical Gothic Revival architect William White, the church was intended to stand at the heart of a new ommunity, but when aldhu ine failed to prosper the building was without a congregation. Victorian churches are in a lass of their own when it omes to uality of design, materials and wor manship and their conversion to residential use is quite rare. When converted in 2008, the Church ommissioners onfirmed that only one other Anglican church had been converted in ornwall, ma ing ower ouse an uncommonly unique property. Architecturally, the building is a beautifully restored i torian gem with lime pointed granite walls forming the nave, han el and south aisle under two parallel roofs with a three stage tower and a stunning broa h spire constructed of dressed limestone ashlar,

a truly magnifi ent onstru tion to behold. Entering the property you come across a beautifully light and spacious arrangement, framed with e posed roof trusses, limestone olumns and rowned with vaulted eilings, with the parti ularly uni ue feature of the original pulpit in whi h everend illiam aslam himself was onverted by lo al miner turned prea her, illy ray, who still has a worldwide following years on, and whose grave is a well nown landmar within the grounds. he galleried ground floor living room features slate flooring and a woodburner, while the it hen and dining area is defined by a glorious leaded stained glass window, and the vaulted sitting room with original features offers in redible views of the tower and sky above. The master suite radiates a spa ious lu ury, while the two bedrooms tu ed away in the tower offer a uiet es ape, with a fourth bedroom on the ground floor. With a fascinating past attached to this stunning property, we’re sure that ower ouse is ready for a new hapter to add to its rich heritage.

FOR THE BETTER

Moving home isn’t a decision to be taken lightly, but if you’re doing so to achieve a healthier work-life balance, then it’s surely a no-brainer. RIGHT Imagine this on your doorstep  ABOVE

Catch a Cornish sunset after a busy day at the office

T

here are lots of little things that many living in Cornwall take for granted. But they are things that make a huge difference to our lifestyle and therefore, our wellbeing. It could be a beach walk with the dog in the morning before work – the perfect way to blow off the cobwebs and set your mind for the day. Or even a post-work trip to the coast to watch the sun set, perhaps with a glass of something cold to hand. These kinds of things are on the doorstep of those living in Cornwall, hence why they’re often taken for granted, but for many who are used to having to travel much longer distances in order to escape their urban homes for some ‘vitaman sea’, being just a few miles from the ocean is surely a dream come true. Having said that, moving house is never an easy undertaking. Logistically speaking, moving all of your belongings into a new home can be a task so daunting that it can actually put people off of moving altogether! But fear not, if you are contemplating a move to the Duchy, then Britannia Lanes is here to help. Providing a bespoke removals service to help make your dream happen, Britannia Lanes aims to make your move as stress-free as possible, giving you one less

thing to worry about when it comes to relocating. With the help of a dedicated team, Britannia Lanes can help, whether you’re after a full or partpacking service, ensuring your belongings are conveyed as safely as possible to your new home by the sea. Run by Managing Director Mark Lane, along with his son Matt and daughter Sarah, the team understand how much easier life is when you’re able to unwind in Cornwall’s beautiful surroundings. As Sarah says: “We know exactly why people would want to move to our beautiful county, and we take great pride in helping them do so.” So, if you’re considering a move to Cornwall to strike a healthier work-life balance, Britannia Lanes is there to help make your transition to a better lifestyle as seamless as possible.

NEW GROUND Oltco unveils a new, sustainable solution for clients around the UK.

O

ltco, the UK’s leading sustainable resin bound driveway company, has already cemented a name for its innovative approach to tackling the growing issue of plastic pollution. Launched in 2019, Oltco’s innovative product, Recycle Bound, is made using plastic waste already in circulation, and since its launch, has already recycled the equivalent of over 120 million plastic straws in installations across the UK. This is certainly impressive, but Oltco Directors Tom Stringer and Johnny Pearce, who are all too aware of the detrimental impact that waste is having on the environment local to their headquarters in Newquay, always knew that there was more to be done. With this in mind, they’re pleased to add another new sustainable product to their offering: Recycle Base – a ground reinforcement system made utilising stone and low-grade ocean plastic. Oltco has found that the size of the average installation is 70m². By using Recycle Base, this would utilise the equivalent of a tonne of waste ocean plastic, or approximately 175 million plastic straws! In most cases, this waste plastic would have been incinerated, producing over a tonne of carbon dioxide, which means that by utilising this product, customers will be carbon offsetting, planting the equivalent of six trees. “Recycle Bound has been hugely successful and has had a really positive impact on the environment and we’re really excited to

replicate this with Recycle Base,” says Tom. “Recycle Base works perfectly with both our resin bound and Recycle Bound solutions, and I’m really proud that we can now also offer our customers a sustainable base solution.” Johnny explains a little more about the product and its environment value: “Typically, the low-grade ocean plastic is incinerated as it is no longer of use. We wanted to use this plastic and give it a new purpose, and by doing this, prevent the release of more C02 emissions. Recycle Base also has the added benefit that after its useful life, it an be broken up and used to create a new ground reinforcement system. It was really important to us that we created a product that could continue to be reused.” Even the grid used in the base product is made using 100% recycled plastic, and has a load-bearing capability of up to 800 tonnes per square metre. Fully permeable and recyclable at the end of its life, this really is an innovative product, one that’s testament to Oltco’s commitment to a greener, more sustainable future.

A RESTFUL

B

eing well rested does wonders for our physical health and mind set, and leads to productive, happy days. However, recent studies suggest that we’re not getting as much sleep as we should, and we all know how far a sleepless night can set us back. With the right bed to suit your individual needs, you can increase the quality of your sleep nightly and feel the benefit day to day! Catching up with Peter Blell, owner of Christie’s Furniture and The Christie’s Bed Shop in Penryn, we ask him for his top tips when it comes to shopping for that super comfortable new bed. The bigger the better “Make sure you think about the size of your room and what size bed will fit,

Peter suggests. “Bigger is better! Studies indicate that the average person wiggles 60 to 70 times per night, so the bigger the bed, the less likely you’ll be disturbed by your partner. Optimise your storage “Having up to four side drawers or a front or side opening ottoman takes up no more spa e, whilst providing e ellent storage First entering the English market during the late 18th century from the Ottoman Empire, nowadays, ottoman beds offer practical spa e without having to sa rifi e on style. LEFT Finding the right bed should be anything but stressful! BELOW Whatever your style and budget, Christie's can help

Sharing is caring If you’re sharing your new bed then Peter suggests trying it out together. “You both need a supportive and comfortable bed to aid with improved sleep. If you both have different comfort preferences, perhaps consider a dual tension bed where one half is softer or firmer than the other. his way, you both get the firmness that you need. Comfort is key It may seem obvious, but choosing the right bed to provide comfort and support is essential to consistent quality sleep. But, as Peter puts it: “Everybody is different. This is why we have over 100 different beds on display, including the best award-winning models. We can also provide expert advice to ensure you get the support and omfort that s right for you. How does it look? Be sure that your new bed looks as good as it feels. “Couple up your mattress with either a divan bed base – available in hundreds of different fabrics, with or without a matching headboard – or a bed frame, also available in different fabrics, materials and styles. Your bed, your bedroom, your style Stick to your budget Finally, Peter stresses the importance of staying within budget. “Our beds start from £49 and go all the way up to £5,999! Spend as much as you can afford for improved comfort and support, but stick to your budget. PAINTINGism perfection

In a typically male-dominated industry, Emma Gill has used her skills, talent and determination to find herself at the top of her game.

H

aving been a painter and decorator for over eight years, and with a two-year apprenticeship with the Construction Industry Training Board under her belt, Emma Gill is making colourful waves in the painting and decorating industry with her company, Emmagine It Decoration. An artist at heart, Emma has been selling her work since she was 14: “I’m happiest with a paintbrush in my hand, so after many years in the hospitality industry and as a Care Support Worker, and seeing other women branching out into the construction industry, I realised it was time to follow my passion.” Taking instruction from her grandmother, a talented artist based in St Just, Emma spent the summer holidays of her youth painting, honing a craft that would lead her to an apprenticeship and eventually training at the Dulux Academy in Slough, allowing her to be ome a ertified ulu ele t e orator for the past four years, meaning that Dulux guarantees her work for two years! Emma’s hard work and talent truly paid off when she was selected out of hundreds of painters with the same prestigious Dulux ertifi ation to be ome part of the team for the new series of Changing Rooms,

creating the stunning designs of Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and Jordan Cluroe and Russel Whitehead of 2LG Studio. “We left our families to go into isolation to form our working bubble in order to do the whole series in one go, and I feel I’ve gained an amazing new family during this adventure,” explains Emma after long days travelling the country with the show, using some incredible effects alongside inspiring designers. The road to success wasn’t always a smooth one for Emma: “I was told many times that I wouldn’t make it as a female in a man’s trade. That I was too much of a perfectionist, but me being a perfectionist was what made me sure that I would prove them wrong.” Emma works all over Cornwall, embracing the long days and hard work that comes alongside the trade, and puts her skills and training to good use in turning houses into dream homes with a multitude of effects and techniques to offer her clients, to create any mood or energy that you could possibly 'Emmagine'.

W

hether you’re thinking about starting your holiday home renovation, considering letting your holiday home to the publi for the first time, or are trying to optimise your letting income potential by utilising the skills of a specialist agency, the team at Cornish Cottage Holidays can help you to kick start your 2022 plans. There’s no better motivation for change than the extraordinarily high customer demand we are seeing for 2022 selfcatering accommodation in Cornwall. In the current climate, correctly priced, styled and marketed holiday properties should be achieving superb booking levels, particularly those that have made hanges to refle t ever evolving customer requirements. For instance, following the pandemic, customers are more likely to opt for holiday cottages with gardens or outside space, meaning owners who invest in the upkeep of outdoor areas will surely reap the rewards. Flexibility is also crucial – allowing short breaks will boost your property’s appeal, especially out of season. Bookings for threenight getaways for winter 2021/2022 are 111% up on 2019! Similarly, allowing dogs will give you around an 11% higher income potential than accommodation counterparts that aren’t pet friendly. So, why act now? Cornish Cottage Holidays Property Manager Janine Woods explains:

“Making plans now, before the start of the new year, will put you ahead of the game, allowing you to maximise bookings for the forthcoming season. Our peak booking period is fast approaching, so if you are in a position to get your property live on our system before the post-Christmas booking rush, you will be well-placed to enjoy a lucrative 2022.” he adds he benefits of se uring boo ings early are numerous, including the opportunity to optimise your pricing, and the knowledge that your income is guaranteed for the coming months. Plus, with the exceptional service we offer, including 24/7 on-call support and optional property management, you will be safe in the knowledge your property is in excellent hands.” Whether you are well-versed in holiday letting or are new to the industry, one thing is for sure – those marketing their property with Cornish Cottage Holidays are almost guaranteed a great return on their investment in 2022! WARM AND WELCOMING Located in the beautiful seaside town of Falmouth, Restaurant Four has some exciting plans for the winter season.

F

lavoursome, locally sourced, honest food is a speciality at Restaurant Four, and is guaranteed to anyone who pays a visit to this wonderfully fresh establishment. Owned and run by husband and wife team, Matthew and Ceri Unwin-Springett, the pair have dreamed of co-ordinating their very own restaurant throughout their individual careers in the hospitality industry, and in June of 2019 their dream came to fruition. ver sin e started out at fifteen as a pot-wash at my local eatery it had always been my dream to open my own restaurant, and the opportunity arose out of pure coincidence,” explains Matthew, “but with four little people watching our every move, my wife and I believed that working hard and building something from scratch were brilliant examples to set our kids.” The restaurant has flourished under its new ownership, and has a warm and welcoming atmosphere that has been carefully nurtured by the whole team: “My wife and I want everyone to have a brilliant time here, whether it’s a quick lunch to hide from the rain or a special occasion.” Chef Matt enjoys working with fresh, seasonal produce that arrives at the restaurant on a daily basis, allowing the kitchen team to come up with new dishes regularly, keeping the menu current and completely fresh! “Food has always been my passion and I hope that this shines

through in my cooking. I believe in good, honest, locally sourced ingredients speaking for themselves,” he explains. Restaurant Four is holding a charity night on 16th November to raise funds for Georgia’s Voice, who offer small, free and onfidential support groups for young women suffering with mental health concerns, and a safe place for those di ult onversations. As the days grow colder and Christmas begins to glint on the horizon, Restaurant Four are busy planning their festive feast of a menu which will run from 1st to 30th December, and their nine course Great Gatsby tasting menu on the 31st December promises to be a New Year’s Eve taste sensation! With their new opening hours running from Monday to Tuesday 6pm to 11pm, and Wednesday to Saturday 12pm to 3pm and 6pm to 11pm, make sure to pay a visit for a culinary experience you won’t forget!

Rapid Health Test is on hand to support you through your travel requirements, helping you save money and stay local with your pre and post-travel tests.

L

ooking back, it can be hard to remember a time when Covid-19 restrictions didn’t affect our day-to-day lives. Now, even something as simple as planning a trip abroad requires countryspe ifi testing proto ols to be adhered to and documentation to be in place. Previously, with no private clinics in the south west, there was no easy way for locals to obtain their it to ly ertifi ation and private PCR Tests. There was a particular need for travellers requiring day 2, 5 or 8 tests to allow them to travel safely abroad. Thankfully, in December 2020, Dr Joachim Stolte made things a little easier for travellers living and working in Cornwall and the south west, setting up his first apid Health Test Clinic in Truro. Fast forward just eight months, and Rapid Health Test is going from strength to strength, providing vital and reliable PCR test results and Fit to ly ertifi ation for those living and working in the south west. Last month saw the opening of the second branch of Rapid Health Test, located in Drake’s Circus, Plymouth, making it even easier for the south west to keep moving. We catch up with Dr Stolte, GMC registered Doctor at Rapid Health Test and sister company MEDfacials, who explains why he set up his new venture: “Regulations around

travel and testing are constantly changing. It can be confusing and costly, which is why we set up Rapid Health Test in Truro. We are the only government-approved clinic in Cornwall to offer same-day PCR with Fit to ly ravel ertifi ation for those travelling to and from the UK. We are so proud to be able to serve the Cornish community; your tests can be done either in our Truro, Penzance or Plymouth clinics, or from the comfort of your own home, with results in a matter of hours.” To book an appointment at Rapid Health Test, or for more information about private ovid testing or it to ly ertifi ation, please ring Dr Stolte on the number below, or visit the website, and make sure to quote ‘Cornwall Living’ to receive £10 off your PCR testing with Rapid Health Test!

very year Cornwall Hospice Care play host to hundreds of supporters in Santa suits all over the county, raising money to keep this incredible charity that so many depend upon up and running. Bike rides and fun runs are among the more popular fund raising events, but this year, Ward Sister at St Julia’s Hospice, Lou Ranford, has something a little different in mind for the festive season. She’s going to skydive in a Santa suit, and she'd love for you to join her. “The last 18 months have been pretty challenging for us all,” explains Lou, “but I’ve been incredibly inspired by our nursing teams throughout the pandemic; day in, day out, they have put on their PPE and continued to care for their patients in really di ult ir umstan es. ouldn’t be prouder of them, so now I’m going to do something to help keep them caring.” This Christmas, Cornwall Hospice Care has decided to do some different Santa Suit challenges – in fact some really different ones! You can still get on your bike and do

the ever-popular Wadebridge to Padstow Santa Cycle, but you can also do the Santa Paddle Challenge on your paddleboard or Kayak, and if you fancy getting the adrenaline really pumping, you could join Lou and do an amazing Santa Skydive. Lou knows what a difference these events make to the charity each year: “Taking part in a Santa challenge will help keep our beds open and our amazing nurses caring, so why not get involved, raise some funds, and have fun together in a Santa suit!” Make sure to go online at www.cornwallhospicecare. co.uk/santas2021 to get started, and make a difference for the people who really need it.
