to the October edition of Cornwall Living!
ornwall has been buzzing this summer. It’s been fantastic to see everyone enjoying the beaches, and our towns and villages have been full of life and laughter. As the summer draws to an end, visitors return home and the children go back to school, the Duchy dons a more mellow cloak. This is the time of year when we can reflect on Cornwall’s other great asset…its food. We have some of the finest growers and producers in the country so, from page 18, we celebrate this incredible natural larder, both from land and sea. We’ve also curated a whole section of our foodie favourites from page 89; if you’re looking to shop local and buy the very best ingredients then head on over for some culinary inspiration. It’s also the time of year when we welcome back the Cornwall Home Improvement & Self Build Show for 2021. If you’re looking for anything from architectural advice, to guidance on planning permission, eco alternatives or interior inspiration, this show has it all. Held at the Royal Cornwall Showground from 2nd to 3rd October, the event will play host to over 120 exhibitors. Turn to page 59 for our special supplement with all the details – we look forward to seeing you there. Over the coming pages you’ll also discover our usual property section (from page 27), a selection of amazing holiday homes (from page 74), two new shopping features covering Falmouth (page 86) and Porthleven (page 100) and some amazing competitions on page 111. MAD Water Sports surfs
out of the pandemic
Picture perfect occasions with
Manor Fashions With stand-up paddle-boarding becoming one of the fastest-growing sports in the last few years, and especially over the recent lockdowns, a Cornwall based family have made a few deft moves in creating and opening a new retail operation, based on the outskirts of Wadebridge. Previously having run and owned a local residential outdoor centre, quality and safety are priority at MAD, and the family running the show bring with them an incredible depth of knowledge and qualifications from twenty years coaching and instructing. Steve Kirk, Managing Director, says: “The popularity of paddleboarding especially, has given rise to numerous people selling equipment, predominantly online, which is great but getting the right product to suit an individual’s needs and wants requires some experience and advice. I think we are without doubt unique in the sense our
advice is based on years of coaching and using these products ourselves.” When the pandemic arrived, the family team had to make a quick decision, as Lesley Kirk explains: “We have always risen to a challenge and weren’t necessarily seeking such a radical change, but now that the world has tipped us in this direction and given the massive rise in interest in water-based sports, it quickly became clear that this was a major opportunity for us. Our son is also involved in the business, so this is truly a family business based on oldfashioned values!”
As we welcome weddings back into our calendars, the time to start planning has well and truly arrived. Being one of the few shops in the country selling special occasion wear for mothers of the bride or groom, alongside a collection of casual wear, Manor Fashions has exactly the thing to help you prepare for the big day. With a sale on mother of the bride wear from 10th September, with some outfits reduced to as little as £99, now is your chance!
With service, advice and attention to detail at the forefront of their mantra, feel free to pop in and begin your experience with all the information you need to get started.
The team have a reputation for personal service on a one-to-one basis in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and with a vast array of designer collections, Manor Fashions can advise you on fit, shape and style, stocking sizes from 8 to 30. For the entire range, make an appointment with the Helston store to find the perfect outfit for the perfect day.

News & views Introducing Kurt Jackson’s latest exhibition
Lockdown made us look anew at our local areas. We could exercise, but only ‘around the block’. We saw our localities with fresh eyes, and when given the chance, they revealed their wonders. For renowned contemporary artist Kurt Jackson, ‘around the block’ meant a walk into and along Kenidjack Valley, tracing the stream down to the sea, up and along the cliffs and home. Kenidjack spills over with natural treasures and dramatic topography. It wears its past on its sleeve, openly displaying its heritage and signs of past enterprises, while providing a home to a plethora of wildlife. This latest blockbuster exhibition at the Jackson Foundation – a large, multiple award-winning art space in St Just – is a stunning collection of paintings and sculpture inspired by the journey of a small stream from its source on the moors, down through the valley and into the sea; celebrating the sights, sounds, history, heritage and wildlife encountered along the way. Kenidjack: A Cornish Valley runs until February 2022. For more information call 01736 787638 or visit www.jacksonfoundationgallery.com

Each piece is designed and handmade from start to finish by Caroline herself, with a beautiful coastal and marine theme brought about by the inspiration of the coast, just a stone’s throw away. A pasty and a pint Producing some of the finest handmade Cornish pasties, made to a family recipe and incorporating ingredients sourced from within a ten-mile radius, Ann’s Pasties is known and very much loved for its take on Cornwall’s favourite foodie tradition. But it’s not all about homemade pasties, sausage rolls and cakes; in fact, we’re excited to announce that this year, Ann’s has expanded to offer customers a ‘pasty and a pint’ – including ‘Ann’s Pasty Ale’ from the Harbour Brewing Co! Embracing the ocean at Cornwall Studios Bring the ocean into your home with Cornwall Studio art prints. Hand drawn by Jacquie O’Neill, her artwork is inspired by rolling storm swells, crystal-clear coves and a passion for surfing, paddle boarding and wild swimming: “I’m ultimately trying to capture those feelings on paper – the essence of an experience, be that riding a wave or a cold-water swim under a crescent moon.” Working from her studio in north Cornwall, the scent of the sea filters into each colourful painting, any of which would make for a perfect addition to the home of salt water seekers, adventurers, explorers, and lovers of the wild, the wind and the sea! With prints, cards, originals and commissions available, why not get in touch with Jacquie and explore these exciting possibilities?

For those seeking an antidote to an increasingly busy world, a stay at Coverack’s Bay Hotel comes highly recommended. Being lulled to sleep by the gentle rocking of the sea below, and then waking to that same catatonic sound is sure to put you in the mood for a day of relaxation, and from your accommodation at the Bay Hotel, you needn’t go far to find just that. Located in the grounds, the Sea Pod has a large ocean-view deck, perfect for long, lazy breakfasts, and with its own garden, well-equipped kitchen, bathroom and large double bedroom, it’s the perfect holiday hideaway. But that’s not all – you’ll also find the Wellness Room, offering rejuvenating treatments including non-invasive facials, reflexology and holistic massages. Working within this warm and newly renovated, rustic day spa, with its stunning ocean views, the therapists bring empathy, expert knowledge and a healer’s touch, ensuring guests leave feeling happy, relaxed and revitalised. When Cornwall Group Chairman Mark Mitchell first pitched the idea of a new venture to be launched in 2021, the country was still in the throes of the Covid pandemic and there were a few raised eyebrows to his plan. The mantle for his vision was taken on by two colleagues, Adele Payne and Kati Bawden, who worked with a small dedicated team to create a spacious showroom and who now jointly manage the shop. “When it came to sourcing products,” explains Kati, “our aim was always to create an eclectic mix of furniture, homewares and gifts found locally and from further afield. Like so many who live in this beautiful county of ours we are very passionate about Cornwall and wanted to reflect that in the items for sale in Annie & Maude.”
There is certainly plenty to look at, with thoughtfully arranged displays and different rooms showcasing furniture, lighting and smaller pieces that make a perfect finishing touch. With the festive season in the not-too-distant future, the ever-resourceful Adele and Kati have already found plenty of beautiful pieces to ensure this Christmas will be filled with countless magical gifts. “We don’t always agree,” explains Adele, with a laugh, “but that’s what helps us get the balance right, especially when choosing our stock.” With the recent launch of the Annie & Maude website, even more people can now enjoy the delights of this carefully curated shop, so make sure to take a look! Preparing for the unpredictable Whilst this past year has been tough on us all, the weather was also tough on our gardens, leaving us with little opportunity to enjoy the outdoors as much as we’d like. Lawns needed to be mowed, hedges trimmed back, and worst of all, fences treated. However, ColourFence are offering the perfect low-maintenance solution for your garden to eliminate all of those arduous fencing chores.
Their metal fencing only requires a simple hose down to keep it looking as good as the day it was installed, and not only is it guaranteed against peeling, warping, and fading for 25 years, it will also withstand gusts of up to 130mph. So, sit back and relax whilst your garden looks after itself. For more information call 01637 222578 or visit www.colourfencecornwall.co.uk

ade up of vast stretches of fertile land and surrounded by clean salty waters, Cornwall offers a thriving natural larder that has become globally renowned and locally treasured. While this beloved county is famed for the immensely beautiful landscapes and breathtaking coastal vistas we all recognise and adore, the unique culinary signatures that hail from the farms, bakeries, breweries, distilleries and restaurants are renowned throughout the rest of the country, and in fact the world. But what makes the Cornish food and drink industry so successful in and out of the Duchy? With such a rich and complex industry at the heart of our county, we thought it only prudent to consult Cornwall Trade and Investment on what quality food and drink really means for the Duchy, and the people who live here. “Built on the foundations made by the region’s fishermen and farmers, Cornwall’s food and drink sector has proven itself a cornerstone of UK gastronomy,” explains Nicola Lloyd, Director of Trade and Investment. “As the number one food destination in the UK, the industry is key to the region’s economy, seeing an annual turnover in excess of £2 billion!” Unsurprisingly, the sector creates one in three jobs in Cornwall and is a huge draw for tourists, which in turn creates further employment. The incredible food and drink produced, sold and exported from Cornwall is integral to the region as a whole and has

an ever-growing place on the local, national and global food highway. From the Cornish pasty and the iconic cream teas to the freshest local seafood caught right here, Cornwall has made a name for itself in the arena of top-notch cuisine. There seems to be an incredible connection between businesses and their suppliers and produce that lies at the heart of the county, and Nicola shares with us her thoughts as to why that is: “The region’s growers, suppliers and food and drink businesses are all united by a genuine passion for Cornwall’s produce. Cornwall’s peninsula effect encourages practical collaboration with purpose across the local food system: shortening local supply chains, maximising regional food value, minimising food waste and improving food justice.” This collaboration is key to the sustainability and future growth of Cornwall’s food economy and is responsible for its innovation and forward-thinking practices. When it comes to catering and hospitality, an industry that the Duchy is undeniably famed for, Cornwall has seen numerous Michelin starred chefs operating locally, drawn by both the culture and the quality of seafood and farm produce on offer.

Take refuge at Michael Caines' latest culinary vision

ABOVE The European lobster is a favourite resident of Cornish waters
Rick Stein, Paul Ainsworth and Nathan Outlaw are amongst the most wellknown, not to mention Michael Caines, who has recently set up shop in the pretty harbour-side village of Porthleven, known locally for its rich food culture with a dedicated festival every year to celebrate it. Born and raised in Devon, Michael was immersed into a local food culture from the start: “I grew up in a large family, and my love of food and cooking came from the big family meals we always shared together, prepared by my mother who was a wonderful cook. My father loved to grow vegetables and fruit in our garden, and so I grew up appreciating the flavours of the freshest foods, picked that day and simply prepared.” After nurturing a natural talent and passion for food, spending time with chefs like Raymond Blanc in Oxfordshire, and the late Barnard Loisseau in Paris, Michael returned home to Devon to take his place at Gidleigh Park as Head Chef with a new wealth of knowledge and experience. “Bernard taught me the importance of ‘terroir’,” recalls Michael, looking back to his time in France, “that all great cuisines are rooted in the products, produce and seasonal ingredients of their own locality.” Having spent 21 years at the helm of Gidleigh Park, in 2016 he went on to create the luxury five-star country house hotel, Lympstone Manor – a dream come true for the Devon chef.
Michael’s cuisine is refined and elegant and is rooted in seasonality, regionality and locality, an ethos reflected in all of his establishments, including the fourth addition to his collection – The Harbourside Refuge Restaurant and Bar in Porthleven. The protected harbour was originally created as a safe haven for sea vessels travelling along the beautiful yet rugged south Cornish coast. Here, Michael has created a safe haven for all lovers of food and drink who choose to make their way to this idyllic spot in fine weather or foul. “You can’t help but be aware of the beauty and power of the sea when you come to Porthleven, and also the rich bounty that it perennially yields to those intrepid fishermen who brave its wrath,” explains Michael. Michael’s belief in seasonality and regionality means that this strong ethos is central to his cuisine and to the supply of ingredients and produce: “I have gone on record many times that the south west doesn’t just have the best larder in the UK, it has the best larder in Europe!” It’s this attitude shared by leading chefs and local artisans that is putting Cornwall at the forefront of a delicious movement towards a local resourcefulness, with more and more people becoming aware of this rich, natural bounty that lies on our very doorstep. One such cultivator of a popular local product is the family run Trink Dairy, a farm that understands the value of knowing exactly where your food and drink originates from. Having earnt itself a reputation for high-quality, great tasting produce, with a two-year consecutive Taste of the West Gold award, and named Champion Dairy Product for 2020, Trink is at the top of the list for many local residents and businesses.

ABOVE Trink Dairy's healthy herd grazing on Cornish pasture
Dairy Manager, Rachel Knowles, talks to us about this noticeable shift towards higher quality, responsibly sourced local products: “People completely underestimate milk, especially for coffee, it’s a key ingredient! Even some baristas didn’t realise there was such good quality milk out there. Trink milk is high in protein and butterfat, and it makes such a difference.” The team at Trink are so proud of their process, and rightly so! As they welcome customers to watch the cows being milked and see them grazing on the fresh local pastures that flourish in our Cornish climate, you can witness the resulting milk being freshly pasteurised and hand bottled amongst a complete transparency that surrounds the farm. “The practice at Trink farm has converted a few vegans back to milk drinking as they know exactly where it’s produced and how the animals are treated – but only from Trink! The milk forms an important part of their balanced diet,” notes Rachel. Affectionately referred to as their ‘mini farmers market’, the vending machine outside the dairy stocks enough milk and various local products to see you through the week, and it’s open 24 hours a day for ultimate convenience. With no milk tankers, no factories, and no motorways involved, Trink takes us back to a simpler time of using the land on our own doorstep to make the highest quality produce in the simplest way. An age of appreciation for the gorgeous possibilities that Cornwall’s bountiful natural larder affords us is dawning, whether it be for farmer, grower, catcher, maker, distiller or brewer. From the lobsters, crabs and fish that prefer our Cornish waters, to the artisanal creations made with fresh local harvests, luxury abounds in the food and drink that hails from our little corner of the world. Won’t you join us in celebrating it?

his stunningly spacious Grade II Listed former Georgian vicarage is light and beautifully restored, blending original detailing and contemporary fittings perfectly to bring a romantically historic style into the present day. Located on the eastern edge of Penryn, just behind the 12th century church of St Gluvias, Lime Tree House is one of the area’s finest period properties. Shrouded in a rich Cornish heritage, the parish of St Gluvias pre-dates Penryn, founded around 1216 by the Bishop of Exeter, with the church we see today having been restored in 1883. Originally a 1680s cottage, the property was turned into the Georgian vicarage in the 1840s, with later extensions added in the 1950s and a thorough restoration that has been completed this year by the present owners who have lovingly restored this fine home with care, creativity and attention to detail.

Bringing your interior vision to life has never been easier, thanks to Duchy Living.
BELOW Give your home a new look with Jenny's collections of beautiful tiles and stunning rugs
uchy Living was born out of a passion for rich colour, pattern and textiles from the east. Specifically, the passion of company founder, Jenny Thorne. “Working with some of the most experienced and knowledgeable contacts on the ground in India and Iran means that I bring unique and one of a kind Persian and Indian rugs, runners and Kilims to grace your space, whether that’s vintage or Bohemian styles, traditional classic or modern contemporary pieces,” Jenny explains. “I aim to deliver the ‘right look’ to any home, holiday property or commercial space, all sustainable and ethically produced.” And it’s fair to say that Duchy Living’s fabulous range of rugs look as incredible in ultra-modern new builds by the coast as they do in period country homes. Known as one of Cornwall’s specialist rug suppliers, Jenny also has in stock luxury cushions, throws and eiderdowns in velvet, cotton and linen, which complement and co-ordinate beautifully with her rugs in wonderful colours as well as muted coastal shades. “I also have a wide selection of decorative tiles in many shapes, colours and patterns that are perfectly suited for walls and floors in any room of the home,” she elaborates. Not only are Jenny’s fingers firmly on the pulse when it comes to interior design, she
is also quick to react to customers and their shopping habits. It is for this reason that Jenny has made the decision – at least for the time being – to close her store in the centre of Truro and focus on a more personal shopping experience, letting her clients choose from a distinctive and carefully curated selection of rugs and home accessories, in the comfort of their own homes. “A little like an interior designer visits and works with clients on site,” Jenny explains, “I can bring rugs, cushions and throws out to you to try in situ before making a decision.” And whether it’s a single rug you’re looking for, or a whole house full of unique and special floor art, after gaining a brief from you, Jenny will hunt down the ideal rugs, tiles and accessories that she believes will fit the bill, before arranging an appointment to try them out in your living space. Put simply, Jenny is an expert when it comes to bringing dream interiors to life here in Cornwall, so if yours is in need of an update – whether that be a new statement rug, or a whole home makeover – be sure to enlist the help of Duchy Living!

any of us have taken the chance over the past 18 months to update our homes, but one room that can often seem like too big a task to take on is the kitchen. And it’s no wonder; ripping out all of the cupboards and starting again is, indeed, a very daunting task, not to mention a costly one! But there is another way, thanks to Matt and the team at Dream Doors in Truro. Whilst they can offer a complete kitchen refit, Dream Doors specialises in making your kitchen dream come to life by replacing your doors. And you would be surprised by how much difference simply replacing them can make to the heart of your home. In fact, did you know that by just replacing doors and drawers – all of which are made to measure by the Dream Doors team – you could save up to 50% compared to the cost of a brand-new kitchen? So what are your options? Well, there are thousands of possible combinations available; Matt and co. have a full range of on-trend colours, including graphite black and dark blues, as well as creams and whites, plus a vast range of styles to choose from, from slick and contemporary to classic shaker. What’s more, Dream Doors has teamed up with leading brands including Neff, Bosch and Samsung, meaning that
when it comes to upgrading your appliances, they have you covered there, too! To see what we mean, why not pay a visit to the Truro showroom? There, you’ll be able to peruse the huge range of styles and materials on offer, before meeting one of the friendly team who will be able to guide you through the process. A NEW LIFE
We take a look at a recent sustainable upcycling project by Duke Stone of Cornwall; a vintage Victorian slate water tank turned into modern kitchen worktops.
local developer, Martin White, recently renovated a Victorian manor house and surrounding derelict outbuildings on the Lizard peninsula. In the house, a 200 year old substantial Delabole slate water tank was discovered in the loft, and it wasn’t long before it was carefully removed and taken to Duke Stone of Cornwall. Delabole slate is quarried locally in north Cornwall from the largest and oldest working slate quarry in England. This particular slate is renowned worldwide for its durability and for its aesthetic appeal. Duke stone of Cornwall restored and repurposed this slate by designing, manufacturing and transforming the tank into beautiful kitchen worktops – the stunning results of which can be seen here. The showstopper island, which was once the bottom of the water tank, is a spectacular piece of work at 10cm thick, showcasing the pearlescent grain which runs through the slate. The stunning kitchen worktops are a talking point amongst each new guest that checks in at this Airbnb, aptly named ‘The First Lady of The Lizard’ since the owners learnt that this building once housed the most southerly church in mainland Britain.
The Duke Stone of Cornwall team are experts in design and manufacture and are well versed when it comes to precisely tailoring your home to your needs, and this stunning project is a case in point. So, whether it’s a new build, a renovation, or simply the update of a single room, and you're looking for expert help in bringing your project to life, be sure to give them a call!

OPC Energy Ltd. can help your Cornish home be a part of the positive change to help protect the planet from a climate crisis.
here is no denying that Cornwall is a frontrunner when it comes to stepping up to the challenge and exploring ways to tackle the climate emergency; the county has set an impressive target of reaching Net Zero 20 years ahead of the UK government’s 2050 goal. But with homes in Cornwall contributing towards 22% of carbon emissions, achieving this goal cannot be done without making the necessary changes. One of the most effective ways to make a significant difference in your home’s carbon footprint is by installing renewable energy technologies. Renewable energy brings a long list of benefits, including high energy efficiency, improved performance, reliability, energy bill savings and even governmentbacked financial incentives. But what exactly is renewable energy? In a nutshell, renewable energy is generated from sources that naturally replenish themselves and never run out. In this modern-day world, many businesses and homeowners are moving away from using traditional methods of energy that involve coal, petroleum and natural gas. Instead, renewable energy solutions are on the rise, and these alternative sources hold the key to combatting climate change. When looking at upgrading the way you power and heat your home, sourcing the right company to complete the job is of critical importance. But with a number of companies available, why is OPC standing out from the crowd? “Our commitment is to provide our valued clients with the best eco-friendly

solutions,” explains company Director, Gary. “We love what we do and our team consists of friendly, professional industry experts. When you work with us, you’ll feel like part of the family.” OPC Energy Ltd. offers full turn-key tailored solutions in the design, specification, installation, commissioning and servicing of heat pumps, solar thermal, solar PV and battery storage, for both domestic and commercial properties throughout Cornwall, which makes them the perfect company to oversee all your renewable energy requirements. So, if your home improvement goal is to ensure your property is playing its part in the fight for a cleaner, greener future, then be sure to give OPC Energy a call and receive your free, no-obligation quote.

SIGNATURE Creating inspiring buildings and stunning spaces that are designed to be used for generations.
There's something distinctly charming about oak frames
imple designs and a natural aesthetic are growing increasingly popular within Cornish homes and architectural projects, often taking inspiration from the striking landscape that runs through the county, tending to lend themselves to the stunning country backdrop in which they’re set. Previously Carpenter Oak Cornwall Ltd, Post & Beam Ltd is at the forefront of a movement towards sustainable yet beautiful constructions that will stand the test of time. Having crossed paths over 15 years ago, Tom Jubb and Tim Simpson have since come together with a vision of sustainability and tradition in mind to create Post & Beam, now a leading authority in Cornish timber construction, renowned throughout the county for their unique designs. From their workshop and studio overlooking the St Ives coast, the team design and handcraft bespoke oak frames and timber buildings with an aim to create beautiful spaces for people to live, work and enjoy. Some outstanding representations of their work include the art gallery at Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens in Penzance, Rick Stein’s The Cornish Arms in Padstow,
and the Seven Stones Inn on the Isles of Scilly, as well as countless domestic oak frame houses, extensions and sunrooms throughout the Duchy. The wealth of experience in the oak frame and timber industry that the highly skilled team possess enables Post & Beam to take on challenging and complex projects, including traditionally jointed structural carpentry, contemporary timber-steel hybrid frames, timber cladding, as well as incorporated glazing and sub-frame joinery. The team also offer a range of insulation methods for their panels to meet varying budgets, although customers with aspirations of a warm, comfortable and environmentally friendly home tend to choose the ecological option of wood fibre. Fabricated mostly in renewable materials, the buildings Post & Beam designs and creates make an attractive and sustainable alternative to the conventional building materials of concrete, stone and steel. The team source their oak, Douglas fir and ‘glulams’ (Glued Laminated Timber) from sustainable forests throughout the UK and Europe, where the forestry management schemes of FSC and PEFC – the internationally

Is your self build project environmentally conscious?
Post & Beam has influenced some of Cornwall's most incredible buildings and spaces
recognised standard of forest management – ensure timber used is an entirely sustainable resource. More trees are planted than harvested thanks to these regulations, which means that with the growth of timber construction, forests are actually thriving. The French management system established in 1872 has a staggering 524 million cubic metres of standing oak, with annual production running at under 1 million. Building only with timber that is sustainably sourced, the material actually locks embedded carbon into your oak or timber frames for the entire lifespan of the building, which means the timber is classified as carbon neutral! As trees grow they lock away carbon dioxide, but mature trees absorb less than those at an earlier stage of growth. Older trees are harvested for construction purposes and converted into a usable building material, and replaced in turn with younger trees more efficient at absorbing CO2. In fact, every cubic metre of timber absorbs one ton of carbon dioxide, making it a sound ecological choice – addressing climate change and the need to reduce CO2 emissions in the construction industry.
A big part of the charm we see in Post & Beam is the fact that Tom, Tim and the team work on everything individually by hand in the workshop, preferring hand-crafting tools and age-old skills passed down through the generations to impersonal technologies like computer guided saws. Each part of a new structure is tended to by one of the team’s very own expert hands, adding a delightfully personal touch to every building they construct. You can be confident in the fact that every single project, no matter the scale, is managed with care and precision with a first-class service for the ultimate result. Building environmentally conscious homes across Cornwall by partnering sustainable materials with ecological design, if you’re thinking about home improvement, or are undertaking a self-build, make sure to get in touch with the team at Post & Beam to see how you could minimise the environmental footprint of your ultimate dream home.

success Oltco Cornwall plays its part in recycling the equivalent of over 120 million plastic straws!
54 | CORNWALL LIVING
CL113--PCV16--ED--Oltco Ltd--2.00v2.indd 2
ltco Cornwall, the leading sustainable resin bound driveway company, led by local businessmen Tom Stringer and Johnny Pearce, has recently played its part in recycling the equivalent of over 122 million plastic straws in driveways up and down the country. Using its innovative and award-winning Recycle Bound solution, Oltco Cornwall has been committed to tackling the issue of plastic waste and has played an integral role in the success story of Recycle Bound, which is being used not only for domestic projects, but also at some of the UK’s leading hotels and attractions. Although it is mainly used on driveways, paths and patios for the domestic market, it has in fact been used on larger commercial projects that include Trevornick Holiday Park, Bodmin Jail, Carbis Bay Hotel (the location of this year’s G7 Summit) and even the Eden Project. In fact, Oltco has recycled the equivalent of 882,000 plastic straws in and around the biomes of Eden! With Oltco’s HQ based in Newquay, Directors Tom Stringer and Johnny Pearce have always been aware of the damaging impact waste plastic has on the environment. In 2019, this led the duo to develop Recycle Bound – a unique and world-first solution to help tackle the issue of plastic waste. Made utilising waste plastic (including straws, plastic drink bottles and food packaging) from a plastic recycling point, the waste is sorted and then crushed into a more manageable size, before being granulated
and mixed with Oltco’s resin blend to create the innovative end-product. Each squaremetre of Recycle Bound consists of the equivalent of 3,000 plastic straws; to put this into perspective, if Recycle Bound was laid on a standard 50-metre drive, the equivalent of 150,000 plastic straws would be recycled in the process! Since its launch – and perhaps unsurprisingly – Recycle Bound has enjoyed resounding success, winning awards that include ‘Product of the Year’ at the Cornwall Business Awards, and runner up for ‘Recycled Product of the Year’ at the National Recycling Awards. Oltco’s Co-Director, Tom Stringer, explains: “We were so passionate about creating a product that would help to combat the global issue of plastic waste and after many years of testing and trying, Recycle Bound came out on top. After launching two years ago, it’s amazing to say that the product has recycled the equivalent of over 100 million plastic straws.” Johnny Pearce, Co-Director alongside Tom, adds: “We’re so proud that Recycle Bound has hit this major milestone, as it’s a testament to how great the product is. We’re thankful for the customers that have come on board and it’s an amazing achievement that Recycle Bound transformations are taking place across the UK.”

AND RELAX Experience the ultimate in outdoor relaxation with your own wood-fired Wild Spa from Kernow Springs.
RIGHT The perfect outdoor spa experience BELOW Watch the world go by in your own wood-fired hot tub
he past year has been defined by time spent at home, and for those who enjoy the great outdoors, that has meant reconnecting with their gardens and appreciating the private space and tranquillity that they afford. With autumn just around the corner, what could be more tempting than your own outdoor spa experience to warm the body and soul? One of the south west’s leading suppliers of wood-fired hot tubs, Kernow Springs can provide spas for any location. Imagine being able to wander outside and into your own Wild Spa experience, with hot tubs, wood-fired barrel saunas (with separate changing rooms and off-grid hot showers), and even a traditional Scandinavian cold ‘drench’ bucket. “Being handcrafted from the finest timbers mean they look stunning and can really complement the ambience and look of your garden,” explains Kernow Springs owner, Martin Dean. What’s more, being heated by burning wood means that no electricity is required, not to mention that there are no noisy pumps, or the fact that only minimal water treatment is necessary. This makes them a more natural choice than their chlorinated, plastic counterparts.
Not only is a permanent Wild Spa installation a dream come true for many dreaming of their perfect garden sanctuary, it can also add value to your home. Not only that, if it’s a holiday let in which you’re having the spa installed, it’s sure to help secure more bookings year-round! Whether it’s in your garden, a field, in the woods or even at an event, Kernow Springs provide spas for any location and occasion. So, if you’re interested in creating your own Wild Spa, with a natural and truly stunning product, be sure to contact the Kernow Springs team today, and if you’d like to see these beautiful tubs in action, be sure to pop by the team’s stand at the Cornwall Home Improvement & Self Build Show. If you can’t make that, you can always catch up with the team at their showroom at Padstow’s Trevisker Garden Centre. Trust us – these fabulous spas need seeing to be believed!

With over a decade’s experience installing solar PV, GreenGen is one of the south west’s leading solar providers.
e’re all doing what we can to reduce our carbon footprint and live as cleanly as possible, an ethos that has been eagerly adopted in the south west, and for those looking to take the next step towards energy efficiency and a carbon-neutral home or business, there is a way forward with GreenGen. Solar power is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint, move away from grid dependence, and bring your monthly bills down too! The energy generated from solar panels can power your entire home and ease the guilt we might feel when we flick the switch for our lights and televisions. By replacing demand from the grid with renewable solar power, solar installations are dramatically reducing the carbon footprint of homes and businesses all across the country. In order to make the most of this forwardthinking change to renewable energy, it’s certainly worth considering the option of a battery to store all that power you’ve harvested from the sun, further reducing any dependency on the national grid and ensuring you’re getting everything you can out of your solar-powered investment. Energy ordinarily sent back to the grid charges into a bank of batteries, replacing grid demand during the evening or overnight, creating
further energy savings and reducing your carbon footprint even more! As a certified installer of solar PV and battery solutions, GreenGen offers installations to customers throughout the south west. Offering varying storage capacities and continuous discharge power, strong warranties and market-leading functionality, GreenGen has a battery solution for all existing and new solar PV customers. Interestingly, batteries have dropped in price over the last year, with numerous options currently available. With free surveys, quotes and helpful advice from the team, GreenGen has a variety of options to suit anyone’s needs, and you can feel at ease in the absence of pressurised selling tactics. Informative proposals are provided after a friendly chat about what would work best for you and your home or business, so why not get in touch with the local, experienced experts for a discussion on how you can take your first step towards renewable energy at home?

A better way to build
Table talk is better with Pygmalion and Funck
Sourcing raw materials from Cornwall and Devon Forestry suppliers, with products also utilising reclaimed salvaged woods and driftwood, Pygmalion and Funck offer bespoke interior and garden furniture, as well as ornamental sculptures and original artwork. Exhibiting at this year’s show, this Exeter-based store also sells antiques and vintage furniture, sourced and restored from south west properties across the region. Included in the fabulous products currently available are several tables from an oak tree stump – salvaged from a farm near Exeter. Felled during the 1940s as part of the war effort, the stump has remained ever since. From it, Pygmalion and Funck has crafted three large dining tables, perfect for both indoors and out, and each stamped with a Devon or Cornwall postcode – denoting their local original source. Fine examples of the kind of products you can expect from this superb independent store – specialists in bespoke one-off dining tables – if you’re attending this year’s Home Improvement & Self Build Show, we highly recommend stopping by the stand and seeing them for yourself! Innovation and Cornish creativity Family run local business, Kestrel Specialist Handrail Systems is paving the way when it comes to handrail applications here in the south west. Along with galvanised and stainless-steel installations, Kestrel offers a bespoke service to meet any needs or visions that customers might have. One such example would be the recent realisation of a client’s dream balcony, which posed a problem with it being set into the roof line of the house. As the team weren’t able to
install a standard post and handrail system, a bit of resourceful creativity was needed in order to offer an alternative design with the same result. After working with the customer, a solution was found, and a sleek, uncluttered guarding now surrounds a balcony that is both safe and primed for al fresco breakfasts and evenings spent under the stars. Cider Press, Prideux The perfect retreat for a couple seeking an autumn escape from an increasingly busy world, this one-bedroom converted cider press has charm and character in spades, and is the perfect choice whether you’re in search of a base from which to explore rural Cornwall, or a paradise in which to hunker down and avoid the madding crowd. Approached through a narrow gateway to the parking area, a short walk (100 yards) via a gravel path leads through the orchard to the secluded front terrace where there is a spacious outdoor hot tub for your sole use (available for an additional charge). From here, a covered entrance porch and glazed door with low head clearance leads into the ground floor bedroom with a double bed, a high-beamed ceiling and an en-suite shower room. In one corner of the room, a carpeted open-tread staircase winds directly up to a galleried open-plan living room on the first floor with painted wood flooring, a curiously shaped ceiling and views of the countryside from several small windows. There is a fitted kitchen area with solid oak units incorporating an electric oven and ceramic hob, a small dining table and chairs and a cosy and comfortably furnished lounge area with a cushy sofa and armchair. Outside, there is a garden table with chairs on the front terrace which catches the afternoon sun, and trails lead through the woods to both the lawned garden and orchard bordered on one side by the river and its small tumbling waterfalls.

Why leave the country when you can book a break in paradise just past Land’s End?
ABOVE Explore the sands of Scilly BELOW You could be forgiven for thinking you’re in the Mediterranean
magine an island holiday without going abroad: the magical Isles of Scilly are just 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall, close enough to visit for a short autumn break to make the most of the last hints of summer. Scilly is the most south-westerly point of England and whether you sail along Cornwall’s amazing coastline on Scillonian III ferry or fly Skybus you will be on the islands in time for lunch. Greeted on arrival with white sand beaches and clear blue seas, you could be forgiven for thinking you had flown long haul rather than a 15-minute hop from Land’s End, 30 minutes from Newquay or 60 minutes from Exeter. Even the ferry journey from Penzance takes less than three hours! Late summer and autumn is a special time on Scilly – quieter and wilder. The islands are ablaze with wonderful warm hues, the wildlife thriving with activity and it is still warm enough for days spent outdoors enjoying the spectacular scenery. At this time of the year you’ll find something for foodies, walkers, wildlife enthusiasts and anyone seeking a little peace. As the islands are near to the Gulf Stream, they are warmer than the mainland
which makes them a haven for migrating birds and early flowers. Once you set foot on the islands you begin to explore a world of few roads and even fewer cars. Life here moves at a more natural pace and is as relaxing as the rhythm of the tides. You might choose to ramble from the beach to a bar where you can enjoy slow-cooked, local food or you might just sit and watch one of the most awesome sunsets you will ever see. Discovering the delights of these sand-fringed islands will help to recharge your batteries and if you want to reconnect with nature, the grey seals, puffins and red squirrels will be pleased to guide your way. If it’s peace and quiet you’re looking for it’s never hard to find a tide-swept beach where yours are the only footprints in the sand. In the evenings, collapse in front of the fire in one of the local pubs and try some local delicacies, before heading outside with a blanket. The islands have virtually no light pollution and on a clear night the incredible dark skies allow you to see the Milky Way in all its splendour. Moving between the islands is simply a matter of catching one of the inter-island

ferries. The hub of the ferry service is St Mary’s – simply stroll down to the quayside, look for the chalkboards, and choose your adventure. On St Martin’s you will find great local food, the island’s famous flower farm and its own winery. For a truly once-in-a lifetime memory, try snorkelling in one of the island’s sandy coves surrounded by playful Atlantic grey seals. St Agnes is the very tip of the British Isles; it is wild and untamed. At low tide you can walk across the sandbar to the neighbouring island of Gugh, which is only a half-mile long and home to just three hardy locals. Tresco, by contrast, seems stylish and cosmopolitan with its world famous Abbey Gardens and their collection of 20,000 subtropical plants. If walking the gardens gives you an appetite, Tresco can offer everything from pub food to fine dining. Bryher has a rugged Atlantic side with dramatic coastline, and occasionally waves to match, while the sheltered, eastern shore is sandy and calm. You can explore this island of contrasts on foot and its surrounding waters by kayak.
There are five inhabited islands and countless deserted ones to explore; each has its own allure. Constantly changing, dependably wild and beautiful, the Isles of Scilly draw people back time after time. Perhaps this is the year for you to come and take your part in the islands’ story. In the light of Covid-19, Isles of Scilly Travel are offering transferable booking with free amendments and cancellations on both Skybus and Scillionian III. Both Scillionian III and Skybus aircraft are operating in a Covid-secure manner with social distancing, mandatory mask wearing and other practices to ensure the safety of passengers, crews and the islanders. Whichever way you choose to travel to the islands, the journey will be a unique part of your holiday memories and there is far more than you can see in a day, or even a week, which is why so many people come back to the islands time after time. So, what are you waiting for? Book online now for your next Scilly escape.

Witness the magical transition of summer to autumn with a luxury stay at Land’s End Hotel.
hilst the summer season brings with it bucket and spade days on the beach and long, balmy evenings spent sitting beneath the stars, it is by no means the only season to visit the Duchy. In fact, as autumn makes its inexorable approach, there is a whole new schedule of activities and pastimes that add up to make a trip at this time of year truly special. Come October, the air becomes crisp and Cornwall’s coast and countryside begin trading in the greens of summer for the rusty reds of autumn. It’s truly a season of the senses, with autumnal colours flooding the hedgerows and the underfoot crunch of leaves percussing each day’s adventure. Finally, as each day comes to an end, nothing beats watching our life-star descend beyond the horizon in a fiery blaze of glory. There are, perhaps, few better places in Cornwall to enjoy all this magical season has to offer than Land’s End, with endless miles of coastal path to explore, and plenty of countryside walks only slightly in-land for visitors to truly experience the meeting of the seasons. It’s also a fabulous point from which to spectate Cornwall’s famed autumn and winter storms; in fact, Victorian art critic, John Ruskin, compared the motion of the seas here to “the defeated division of a great army, throwing all behind it into disorder”.
In short, it is a location like no other, and for those looking to stay, Land’s End Hotel is the ultimate base from which to explore it. This beautiful retreat, ‘a stylish stay at the ends of the earth’, is rooted in charm and tradition, blending its Victorian heritage with contemporary twists and modern touches throughout, with 30 fabulous en-suite bedrooms. Uniquely located on the granite cliffs with views towards the Isles of Scilly, guests can meander along the coastline to either side and take in the natural landscape and scenery that seems all the more dramatic as summer turns to autumn. The hotel is also dog friendly – a dream come true for humans and hounds alike hoping to enjoy a Cornish adventure. When it comes to winding down and satisfying the kind of appetite that only a walk by the sea can sharpen, you certainly won’t be disappointed by the Land’s End Restaurant menu. Focussing on wholesome, modern classics using fresh local produce, it’s the perfect way to round off the sensorial experience that is an autumnal day at Land’s End.

A VICTORIAN VISTA
nown as the ‘Grande Dame of Falmouth’, The Falmouth Hotel first opened in 1865 as Isambard Kingdom Brunel expanded the Great Western Railway into Cornwall. Its castle-like Victorian architecture, spacious interiors, fantastic seafront location and award-winning food has ensured its place as one of Cornwall’s best-known hotels. The Falmouth Hotel has stood tall and proud in its unrivalled position, commanding superb views of this historic town, since it was established over 150 years ago. Then, with the rest of the seafront still a patchwork of green fields and paths, the hotel was an oasis for the English gentry. Attracting famous faces throughout history, one such visitor was Beatrix Potter herself who stayed at the hotel in 1892, penning her very first picture letter during her trip: “I have come a very long way in a puff-puff,” she wrote, “to a place in Cornwall, where it is very hot and there are palm trees in the gardens and camellias and rhododendrons in flower which are very pretty. We are living in a big house close to the sea. We go on the harbour in a steam boat and see ever so many big ships.”
The Falmouth Hotel has been attracting famous faces to its doors for over 150 years, and with its grand exterior and picturesque location, it’s not hard to see why. Today, The Falmouth Hotel remains one of the most prestigious hotels in the area, offering high-class accommodation alongside the recent addition of luxury lodges on the hotel grounds for an added touch of decadence and class. With Pendennis Castle viewable from the hotel grounds, you are surrounded by the rich history that weaves its way through the heart of Falmouth, and with a multitude of local eateries just steps away from the local beach, what more could you desire for a perfect Cornish getaway? Through it all, The Falmouth Hotel has retained a character and sense of style that welcome you into ‘another world’ the moment you walk through its doors. That world, now as ever, is one of Victorian grandeur, spacious comfort and devout personal service – an ageless style and atmosphere that afford a wondrous sense of escape, retaining its appeal in a more informal age.

alking through Falmouth’s Old High Street is an experience all of its own, transporting us back to a time of carts and carriages amongst the bustle of trading and bargaining in the historic market town. Gorgeous buildings that have stood the test of time guide us through the street, now home to new tenants with fresh, modern businesses, ready to welcome you with a warmth that has always existed in the Cornish town. Hidden courtyards invite curious explorations, and occasional opeways give tantalizing glimpses of the sparkling sea that lies at Falmouth’s feet. The nearby university has brought with it a refreshing population of creative minds with a fresh sense of fashion and style, the reflection of which can be seen in the bohemian atmosphere that radiates from the doorways, inviting you to try a little something new.

We take a look at some of the best businesses on the Old High Street in Falmouth.
Rich in history with a quintessentially Cornish heritage, Falmouth is home to a plethora of local crafters, cultivators and collectors of unique and eye-catching articles. Take a stroll down the cobbled path of indulgence and discovery that is the Old High Street, framed with historic buildings each with a story to tell, and come across a Cornish keep-sake to take home and treasure as a special reminder of a time spent in the calm embrace of Cornwall. Whether you’re looking for fresh home interiors, a handmade signature piece to take pride of place at home, or a special something for a special someone, Falmouth’s Old High Street has it all, and this month we’ve collected some of our absolute favourites.
No.20 The Grey Lurcher Having now been a familiar shop front on Falmouth Old High Street for four years, The Grey Lurcher moved to its present position in August last year. “We have to say it’s been the best decision we ever made,” says owner, Julie. “The change of premises has meant we’ve been able to move towards homewares and interior styling.” The team have built a carefully curated selection of makers from both Cornwall and further afield, developing a beautiful collection of limited addition pieces. Alongside some gorgeous interiors and homewares, The Grey Lurcher stocks a range of furniture paints and accessories – perfect for the next upcycle project – and a great selection of cards and contemporary gifts. COOL AND CRISP Fowey Valley, makers of a range of exquisitely crafted fine spirits and ciders for over 25 years.
here is nothing quite as refreshing as a cold glass of cider to end a fun-filled day, embraced in cool condensation and streaked with bubbles to leave a tingle on the tongue. But what you may not know is that a lot of mass-market ciders aren’t real ciders at all, and are usually made up of sugars and flavourings! Over at Fowey Valley, the team have perfected the art of crafting the real thing, made with fresh apples from their own orchard and nothing else. From humble beginnings of hand pressing apples from their six trees and paying eager helpers with bottles of cider, Master Distiller Barrie Gibson has led the family-run Fowey Valley Cider and Distillery to success, now famous for its ciders and spirits which are, almost without exception, made entirely from scratch. Having grown exponentially, the business has now taken root in a bigger home in Lostwithiel, with plenty of on-site parking for a multitude of visitors to pay a visit from Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm. The free one-hour tours and tastings (which must be booked online) are the perfect way to learn about this age-old tradition, or you can pop into the shop for a
quick glance behind the scenes and a taste of any that catch your eye. Of course, a taste of the multi-award-winning champagne-style 2016 vintage cider is on the cards, having taken three years to make with a 400-yearold technique, alongside the easy-drinking Castledore and a range of in-house spirits, including small batch vodka, the famous Foy Gin and an oak-aged cider brandy. If you’re keen to learn how to make your own gin or cider, you can also book a threehour experience where you will learn how to make and take home either a gallon of cider or a bottle of gin to your own recipe, with more than 50 botanicals to choose from! A lot has changed since those first bottles 25 years ago, but Barrie's pride in producing great cider and distilling exceptional spirits remains as strong today as it was then, so make sure to pay the team a visit for a taste of the real Fowey Valley spirit.

The classic Cornish clotted cream makers over at Rodda’s share with us an indulgently irresistible recipe which can be enjoyed by the whole family.
SERVES 10 INGREDIENTS: 250g dark chocolate (70% Cocoa) 100g Rodda's Cornish clotted cream 70g digestive biscuits (broken into chunks) 30g golden syrup 50g mini marshmallows 38g Smarties 25g glacé cherries (optional)
hy not embrace a wonderful moment with Rodda’s divine recipe for Chocolate Rocky Road? It’s sweet, crunchy, delicious, and best of all, really easy to make together. This humble recipe is made particularly tasty with a rather special Cornish ingredient; Rodda's Cornish clotted cream. The simple addition of this star ingredient lends the silkiest texture to the chocolate ganache, making for an utterly irresistible treat. The only question is, who will lick the bowl?
DID YOU KNOW? Alongside the famed clotted cream, Rodda’s stock a range of freshly made Cornish products, from farmhouse Cornish butter and double cream to shortbread and fudge! Go to www.roddas.co.uk for the full range.
Chop up the dark chocolate and place in a heat proof bowl, with the clotted cream and the syrup. Place over a saucepan of boiling water and stir until melted together. Alternatively, you can place the chopped chocolate, golden syrup and clotted cream in a microwave proof bowl and microwave in 30-second intervals until melted, stirring every time.
Once the mix has completely melted, take off the heat and allow to cool slightly and put aside 4-5 tablespoons of the mixture.
Fold in the biscuits, marshmallows and the cherries into the rest of the melted chocolate until it is well mixed.
Once everything is well combined, pour the mixture into a square baking dish lined with greaseproof paper, pressing the
mixture into the corners with a spatula or the back of a spoon. 5
Give the mix one last press over the top and place in the fridge for 10 minutes to harden.
Take out of the fridge and use the remaining chocolate to drizzle over the top, adding the Smarties and any additional decorations you’d like (the team at Rodda’s like to use chocolate stars!).
Return to the fridge to set for 4 hours or ideally overnight.
Once set, cut into 10 equal squares, and enjoy!

Nicki and Joe Woolley left it all behind to move to Cornwall and become the new face of Elemental Gin.
n 2013, the first drops of a gently steeped organic spirit, a product of months of alcohol alchemy, made their way from a copper still into the very first glass bottle, and Elemental Gin was born. As one of the first gins to be exclusively distilled and bottled in Cornwall for over 300 years, this premium gin won over the palates of the discerning, the experimental and the impartial alike. An artful blend of 12 carefully sourced botanicals combined with a mastery of gin making made for an awardwinning staple of the Cornish gin scene. Seven years later in early 2020, on the eve of a country-wide lockdown, Nicki and Joe Woolley arrived. Driven by determination and a thirst for adventure (and gin), they uprooted their little family, stepped away from the nine-to-five grind and embraced everything Cornwall and Elemental had in store for them, their heads swimming with possibilities. “There’s something about this unique corner of the world that has always felt like home. However far we travelled, Cornwall always seemed to draw us back.
Sometimes in life, the stars align, and for us this happened when we came across the opportunity to become the new owners of Elemental Gin,” explains Nicki. The most important thing at Elemental Gin now has been to ensure that they continue the tradition of creating the handcrafted, small-batch, premium gin that people know and love, whilst breathing some new life into the distillery and the brand. Clean, fresh, and proudly bearing it’s made-inCornwall seal, Elemental Gin is produced in their distillery at the bottom of the garden. “We capture the essence of Cornwall in every bottle, from using locally sourced ingredients like Cornish spring water from Bodmin Moor, right down to the elementinspired branding wrapped around every bottle. It’s because of these strong Cornish roots, that we’re always looking for ways to keep our gin as low-impact on this place as possible,” says Joe. The multi-award-winning Cornish Gin is a firm favourite with the locals, heralding juniper and citrus tones. Across the range they make an excellent gin and tonic, but for something different why not try the Raspberry Gin as an amazing ‘summer cup’, or the Apple and Elderflower Gin with a splash of cloudy apple juice over ice?

A focus on quality The Roastery
We explore some of the superb businesses that are putting Porthleven near, if not at, the top of Cornwall’s list of must-visit destinations.
ome to a vibrant array of Cornish businesses, from fresh local artisans to established firm favourites, Porthleven is a hive of activity year-round. This month we take a look at the delightful delicacies, hand-crafted keepsakes and adventure-packed activities that this picturesque harbour town has to offer.
Made to order Ced’s Bagels
When it comes to understanding Porthleven’s entrepreneurial growth, you can’t help but wonder if it’s coffee that fuels their community-spirit and business ideas. It certainly helps, then, that the town has some new neighbours with some longstanding coffee credentials.
For any visitor to Porthleven, it’s certainly worth a trip to the Shipyard where you’ll find artisan bagel maker, Ced’s Bagels. Hand rolled and freshly baked each morning on site directly behind the hatch in the bakery, these tempting bagels are filled to order with a refreshing array of flavours, including salt beef, gherkins and mustard; smoked salmon, cream cheese, dill and red onions; and house red pepper spread, zaatar, rocket and pickled onions, with meat and vegan options available alongside an exciting weekly special!
Enter The Roastery, Origin Coffee’s new headquarters. While not a new business (Origin was founded in 2004), the recent move over from Helston provides an exciting new chapter for the harbour town. Consider Origin the oldnew kids on the block, championing local business with a multifunctional space that serves up creative flair and passion rooted in sustainability. Behind the smart cladded exterior sits a fully operational roastery that, as a proud B Corporation, produces direct-trade coffee centred around mindful practices. Those living locally can return their recycling at the roastery café through a recycling programme with First Mile, and for those looking to go the extra mile, there are zero-waste dispensers on hand, so visitors can purchase freshly roasted beans without any nonsense.
Previously a chef, Ced saw a gap in the market for proper bagels in Cornwall, and the team make everything themselves where possible, from the salt beef which is cured in house for about a week before slow cooking for the best flavour and texture, to the vegan red pepper spread, vegan cream cheese and homemade pesto. You can buy plain bagels to take home, whether it be plain, sesame, poppy seed or everything in one, and let’s not forget the delightful cheese bites and homemade brown-butter cookies! Open Wednesday to Sunday, 11am to 3pm.
Pull up outside and you’ll note the PodPoint stations, enabling hybrid and electric car charge while folk refuel with local, seasonal fare from George at Blower’s Place – Origin’s chef in residency, well regarded for his minimal-waste, high-impact dishes. Inside, too, steers away from your standard café set-up. Whether it’s mastering skills with latte art and home brew classes, or sipping on an impeccably crafted cocktail, the roastery provides an engaging space for all – coffee connoisseur or not.

Festival flavours Big Eats
This west Cornwall family business can usually be found at all the major festivals and events, serving incredible food with intense flavours, including the current signature of Cornish Pulled Pork, marinated in a secret dry barbeque rub, slow cooked for over 12 hours in Cornish cider and boosted with a dark barbeque sauce. This year, alongside a booming catering business, Big Eats has brought festival food to Porthleven! Offering an impressive menu including all of its established festival favourites, Big Eats has carved a space for itself in the picturesque harbour village of Porthleven, just steps from the water in the team’s cleverly arranged shipping container. Here you can find the signature pulled pork alongside a delicious array of freshly made burgers, generously loaded nachos and tantalising tacos to satisfy any hungry wanderer. Supporting the local community is a priority for the team who source fresh Cornish meat and ingredients like Rattler Cyder for their menu, so make sure to stop in for some fantastic festival flavours. www.thebigeats.co.uk
Coming home to Cornwall Just Lily Jewellery
Created in 2010, and born from a frustration with the poor quality and lack of originality in jewellery on the market at the time, owner Kim Hambleton founded Just Lily Jewellery, with the ultimate aim of providing unique, beautiful and highquality handmade jewellery at an affordable price. Kim began by sourcing a range of small, artisan makers who were able to combine good quality materials with original designs, and with demand for these stunning creations on the rise, new creators and more ranges have been introduced to the increasingly popular collection. It’s been vital from the start that none of the Just Lily products contain lead or nickel – traits that are often the cause of allergies or discolouration – so you can be confident in wearing anything from this enchanting collection. After returning home to Cornwall, Kim launched her first permanent harbour hut in the idyllic location of Porthleven in 2021, the perfect place to showcase her extensive range, including pieces from Ear Candy, On Shore, Beaten Brass and Eden, all of which are available in the hut as well as online, so make sure to pop in and say hello! www.just-lily.co.uk
Looking for adventure? Shipyard Cycles Launched by local brothers and keen cyclists, Matt and Chris Orchard, Shipyard Cycles offers a fantastic way to explore Cornwall, with a range of bikes and e-bikes to suit your needs for the day. “We felt the village was ready for a cycle-hire business, and with e-bikes you’ve effectively flattened Cornwall!” explains Matt. Despite being in a hilly location, your level of fitness won’t hold you back, as long as you can ride a bike you can get out and explore with a bike that will do the hard work for you. Their e-bikes have a range of around 50 miles allowing for a full day out, with groups often leaving straight from Porthleven, but
the team can deliver too so you can set off from your own home. Their adult and children’s bikes along with their range of seats and trailers mean the whole family can come along for the ride. With a multitude of adventures right on the doorstep, the only thing left to do is pick your ride and start exploring! www.shipyardcycles.co.uk

Jasmine, 21, came up with the idea for the business, using her Dad’s catch to offer fresh seafood to locals and visitors, straight from the boat to the plate. Promoting local, sustainable fishing is a high priority for the team who have formed a co-operative between themselves and the local fishermen, all of whom receive a fair price for their lobsters. Fresh lobster, crab and prawn salads, sandwiches and platters are on the menu, and feel free to bring your favourite wine along with you to pop into one of the wine coolers on hand. Lending professional guidance and a helping hand in starting a new business, Outset Cornwall are the team to turn to with your lightbulb idea.
pen any food magazine, newspaper, or run a Google search these days, and it’s not uncommon to find a Cornish town, or even the entire county, listed among the UK’s top foodie destinations. From Penzance to Padstow, Cornwall is the proud home of two Michelinstarred chefs, a wealth of multi award-winning restaurants and eateries, plus numerous amazing food producers and manufacturers such as Roddas, Cornish Sea Salt, Buttermilk
and St Austell Breweries, to name a few. Surrounded by idyllic Cornish countryside, beautiful beaches and rugged coastline, all of which provide a rich larder of high quality, fresh local produce and ingredients right on their doorstep, it’s no wonder these businesses are having such an impact. But it’s not just traditional bricks-andmortar venues and established producers that are thriving; there’s a new generation of small food-business owners throughout Cornwall who are joining the scene, doing things differently and shaking things up. Take entrepreneur Rachel Leaver, who launched her Hayle-based business Baba’s Mezze earlier this year after preparing lots of food at home for friends and family during the initial lockdown. “I’ve always worked in food, mainly thanks to my dad owning Carn Brea Castle Middle Eastern Restaurant for years and teaching me everything I know,” says Rachel. “When lockdown hit last year, I needed to keep busy, so I started preparing authentic Middle Eastern dishes from traditional Jordanian recipes, and it became really popular! Word spread and people kept asking me about my food, and I realised I had an opportunity to turn this into a business, something I could fit around home and family life, and Baba’s Mezze was born.”
104 | CORNWALL LIVING
RIGHT Valentina Langley of La Pineta Italian Deli proudly presenting her culinary gems RIGHT Baba's Mezze, another foodie business idea brought to life with help from Outset Cornwall
Featuring dishes such as baba ghanoush, shawarma, hummus and falafel, each mezze is freshly prepared, delivered direct to your door, and contains generous portions of everything. Combined with how delicious her food tastes, Rachel consistently gains rave reviews from her customers, growing her social media following as a result, and she now plans to expand the business by increasing delivery and opening her own premises. Another entrepreneur with a thriving food business is Italian-born Valentina Langley, owner of La Pineta Italian Deli. When the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns scuppered her plans to open a traditional delicatessen in the centre of Truro, Valentina decided to find other ways to develop her business and bring a little slice of Italy into people’s homes. “I always had the idea of starting something around Italian cuisine, as I was brought up basically cooking with my mum and dad,” says Valentina. “But I wanted to steer away from the norm, or I guess what people think is normal for Italian cuisine, which is usually pizza and pasta, and showcase that there’s so much more to authentic Italian food.” Creating gourmet boxes that can be collected or delivered, DIY pizza kits the whole family can enjoy, and a range of dishes using good yet simple ingredients, Valentina definitely champions real Italian food that her customers love. With a regular spot at Truro Farmers’ Market, pop-ups at Enys Gardens, Boconnoc Estate and Knightor Winery, plus collaborations with Miracle Theatre throughout the summer, La Pineta Italian Deli is certainly gaining recognition. So much so, that Valentina got invited to be part of Paul Ainsworth’s Travelling Feast at Royal Cornwall Showground in August. “Excited was an understatement!” says Valentina. “These guys are among some of the best chefs in the world and to be invited to work with them was just amazing.”
There’s no doubt Rachel and Valentina have worked hard to launch and grow their businesses, but both would agree they couldn’t have got started without support from Outset Cornwall. “I’ve found Outset really helpful in teaching me the business side of things. It’s like having a second pair of eyes on what you do, giving you fresh ideas and help when you need it,” says Rachel. Funded by the European Regional Development Fund, HM Government and the Outset Foundation, Outset Cornwall’s awardwinning business start-up programme is now in its twelfth year, and continues to support people across the county wishing to start, run and grow their own business. So, if you have a business idea and need help getting it off the ground, contact Outset Cornwall and start turning your ideas into reality.

Predn is a surfboard shaping company on a mission: to build a board that offers the perfect balance of performance, sustainability and accessibility.
aving come to terms with how harmful the industry-standard surfboard manufacturing process is for the environment and our own health, Predn (the Cornish word for ‘wood’) aims to challenge every aspect of the process and thus achieve a better, healthier and more sustainable way of shaping. Based in a wind-powered workshop on Barnfields Business Park in Wadebridge, Predn employs a team of in-house shapers to hand-craft a number of their tried-and-tested templates, as well as custom shapes, using the most natural and accessible materials available. There are three standard shapes available; the first is the trademark ‘Predn’ construction, featuring a ply-veneered deck and flax-reinforced fin boxes on an expanded polystyrene core. This offers an optimum blend of surfing performance and sustainable build, with the added bonus of a beautiful wooden aesthetic. The second is the ‘Table’ construction. This product line looks much more like your traditional white surfboard, with the exception of its double cork stringers and flax-reinforced deck. By opting for a Table board, you’ll get a more durable and sustainably crafted board with a similar look and price tag to a traditional board.
Finally, there’s the ‘RAD’ construction. Short for ‘Research and Development’, as the name implies, this ever-evolving line allows the shapers to experiment with innovative new materials – particularly flax, the natural properties of which never cease to amaze – in their constant quest to offer surfers greater performance, sustainability and accessibility. All three board lines are available to try and buy – in different shapes and sizes – from the brand-new Predn Surf Co shop next door to the workshop. You’ll also find a mindful selection of accessories, including natural rubber wetsuits, fins made from recycled ghost fishing gear, cork tail-pads, eco-wax, wooden balance boards, organic cotton T-shirts and more. In short, Predn is a must-visit for surfers and those living the surf lifestyle who wish to champion a more sustainable future for this growing sporting industry.

HUES OF THE HEART
We speak to Steve Slimm about his transformation of reality through artistic creativity, and his personal emergence through the pandemic.

e’ve all felt the effect of the Coronavirus pandemic since it began in 2020, and I think it’s safe to say that no one’s life has been untouched. Artist Steve Slimm is no exception, and as we begin to return to a relative normality we thought we’d take this opportunity to find out a bit more about the impact Covid-19 has had on Steve’s transcendental creativity here in Cornwall. “For me as a painter, inspiration drained away like precious lifeblood after the first lockdown in 2020. My studio became like a morgue, and all I could do for that period was make dark foreboding music – which somehow carried my creativity through,” explains Steve. Unfortunately, this summer Steve became ill with the virus: “Interestingly, surrendering to a debilitating condition proved exactly the kind of salvation I’d sought – a way out of fearful expectation. What I’d feared, happened – and it was all okay. And finally, my creativity was released to again paint with courage.” While Steve was able to turn to music in darker times, his emergence through the worst of it brought him back to the craft he’d surrendered, and Cornwall was exactly the place to inspire him: “For me, the act of painting begins with the distilled purity of an open, fearless heart. Music can express
darkness, when necessary, but visually I need light. I thrive on light, and the way it bounces off our granite peninsula all the way up to Dartmoor; and how it echoes around coastal waters and back to earth from low western skies.” To celebrate his re-emergence out of fear, after 15 years in his current studio, Steve has installed a road-side sign – ‘Deep In The Heart Art Studio’. “It feels an appropriate time to stop hiding away in my cave, and start to invite passers-by in to share the experience of a sublime ancient connection with the land and its mysteries.” Over the past 18 months life has presented its challenges, but Steve believes there is hope and creativity to be found for anyone: “It is my conviction that humanity stands on the brink of a creative quantum leap into the unknown. And here I am, coming through unscathed and thankful – looking toward whatever is next.”

Steve Maggs from RRL Cornwall explains that it’s never been more vital to seek advice you can trust as inheritance tax receipts hit a new record high.
’m sure we’re all guilty of putting things like wills and future planning to the back of our minds (and priorities) for a time in the far distance, but with changes in inheritance tax shifting under our feet, times have never been more uncertain. With the right advice and support system behind you, there is still a way for you to be on top of your plans and the future of your loved ones with the help of a reputable Cornish company you can trust. Steve and the team over at RRL Cornwall have been carefully monitoring the rise in inheritance tax receipts, and discuss the importance of well-planned preparation to stay in control when the time comes. “Recently released data by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) shows that receipts from inheritance tax totalled a new record high of £5.4bn in the 2020/21 tax year,” explains Steve. “Inheritance tax is charged at 40% on the amount by which a person’s estate, plus the value of gifts made in the final seven years of the person’s life, exceeds their nil rate band (NRB) – currently £325,000. The unused NRB of a spouse or civil partner who died first can be claimed
112 | CORNWALL LIVING
on the death of the survivor, making a current combined NRB of £650,000 per married couple/civil partnership.” A new ‘residence nilrate band’ (RNRB) was also introduced on 6th April 2017 that provides a further £175,000 nil-rate band per individual, where applicable. “This broadly applies where a person who has died owned a home or a share of a home which passes to direct descendants (e.g children, grandchildren etc),” Steve elaborates. “An unused RNRB is also transferable between spouses and civil partners, which means that the allowance can potentially be doubled on the death of the second person. The availability of the RNRB is reduced where a person’s estate exceeds £2million. The availability of both nil-rate bands means that currently a couple’s children (or direct descendants) can inherit up to £1m of an estate without paying tax.” However, despite the relatively recent introduction of the RNRB the inheritance tax receipts still continue to increase. Steve continues: “The statistics also highlight
how low the inheritance tax receipts are compared to other taxes (such as income tax, corporation tax, VAT, capital gains tax, NIC etc). This low total, in relation to the relatively high amount of administration, means that law changes would be logical to increase the tax take in the future. The levels of BRB and RNRB have been frozen until 2026, and rafts of other changes reforming inheritance tax have been recommended that will only see the inheritance tax receipts increase further, and the exposure to the tax for individuals increasing.” Steve encourages all individuals to regularly review their exposure to inheritance tax as liabilities can be mitigated through effective planning. The availability of effective planning has led many to state that inheritance tax is voluntary. Steve, who is a Tax Partner and a Chartered Tax Adviser at RRL, says: “The Treasury’s record Inheritance Tax haul shows the importance of speaking to a qualified, experienced Chartered Tax Adviser and putting in place planning that will potentially reduce the tax burden for your loved ones. It is also essential to review your will to confirm it is up-to-date with current tax legislation. Our solicitors in our sister legal business, RRL Wills, offer this service meaning that the tax advice and legal advice is collaborative. During Probate, executors need to ensure that they are claiming all available tax reliefs and a firm such as RRL, which offers both Probate and tax advisory services, is ideally placed to do this for clients.” RRL understand that this sort of information can be overwhelming in difficult times, but preparation and the right support is paramount in protecting your loved ones when the time comes, and RRL are in a prime position to be able to offer all the advice and knowledge you’ll need to ensure their future.

Introducing Dive Project Cornwall: eliminating plastic pollution, protecting the marine environment and saving all life in our oceans for future generations to enjoy and cherish.
ABOVE According to Greenpeace, 12.7 million tonnes of plastic waste produced each year ends up in our oceans INSET Become a Dive Buddy sponsor and give one lucky teenager the experience of a lifetime!
ive Project Cornwall is a notfor-profit, community interest company with a simple goal: to protect and safeguard the future of our oceans and, by doing so, save our planet. In order to achieve its goals, Dive Project Cornwall will educate hundreds of thousands of young people by delivering an education programme directly into schools across the UK, raising the awareness of the importance of the planet's marine environment and its vital role in our very own existence. It will also reach millions of adults through promotional features via multiple media partners and strong collaborations with numerous ocean-based charities. At the heart of the project is a competition for 400 lucky teenagers to win the experience of a lifetime; a six-day, lifechanging trip to Cornwall where they will learn to scuba dive, enjoy outdoor adventures, take up beach-related activities and attend presentations from leading marine industry experts. The 400 lucky teenagers will leave Dive Project Cornwall as ‘Ocean Influencers’. They will then act to positively engage, inspire and motivate the next generation to save our planet.
Dive Project Cornwall is delighted to be working with key organisations and brands including PADI, the Marine Conservation Society, and founding sponsor, Fourth Element. Paul Strike, who heads up the Cornish dive brand, says: “Dive Project Cornwall is an innovative and effective way of educating the next generation of the importance of a healthy marine environment as well as encouraging a responsibility for protecting it,” and encourages everybody “to do what they can to support this exciting and unique project”. So how can you help? If you’re an individual or business who shares the values and goals of Dive Project Cornwall, why not become a Dive Buddy by sponsoring one of the 400 lucky teenagers, or get involved as a School-Week Host and sponsor one of the 20 weeks of the project. There are many ways that you can help this project reach its goals. If you’re interested, or to find out more, be sure to email firstname.lastname@example.org.
