he dawn of a new year heralds new beginnings. With that very much mind, our first cover feature of 2021 explores how we can make, and keep, our New Year resolutions to be happier and healthier with a combination of mindful drinking, eating and exercising. I catch up with some of Cornwall’s fitness, nutrition and mindfulness experts for advice on how to make some life-enhancing decisions for the future. Turn to page 18 to find out more. Where better to reconnect with yourself and the environment than in Cornwall? With foreign travel still restricted, there is no better time to plan and book your next staycation in Cornwall. Let us inspire you with our collection of coastal and countryside properties (from page 51) that will provide the perfect base for exploring the Duchy. You may even be thinking of making a move to Cornwall this year. With remote working now the norm for many, who wouldn’t want their home office to have a view over the ocean? We take the leg-work out of your property hunt from page 25 as we showcase a selection of soughtafter properties; from a contemporary coastal development to a majestic, period city house. And, if your New Year involves a makeover to your existing house then our home section, from page 32, offers inspiration inside and out. All that’s left for me to say is Happy New Year, stay safe and... ...happy reading!

Have a slick 2021
40 years of sinning
helps our hospices So, Christmas is over and 2021 is finally here. Why not celebrate with some slick new products, to help you and your fur babies enjoy your New Year walks in comfort? We all enjoy a good walk, no one more so than our four-legged friends. But as we know, they also love a muddy puddle, which can be messy when we get back into the car, or walk into the house. With that in mind, Lisa and the team at Slickers Doghouse in Padstow have been on a mission – to find the best dog cleaners on the market… Introducing the Karcher 0C3 mobile cleaner. Using a low-pressure water stream, the Karcher 0C3 is extremely gentle and completely safe to use on animals, simply washing the dirt out of their fur. It includes a pet box with optimally tailored accessories, including a conical jet nozzle with a comfortably soft shower stream, for more sensitive pets, as
well as a fur cleaning brush for removing stubborn dirt. It also comes with a microfibre cloth to dry them off afterwards, absorbing lots of water and eliminating unpleasant odour. For storage, the accessory box can simply be fixed to the machine, making this an ultra-handy, easy-to-use package. Slickers Doghouse is renowned for its superb range of accessories for those making the most of Cornwall with their pooches. Among them are the Slickers Slings – perfect for keeping smaller doggies dry whilst still getting some fresh air – as well as a practical-yet-stylish range of LED hats! These are just the ticket for helping you find your way on those dark, early morning walks, without the need to carry a torch. They are also, Lisa tells us, useful for finding poop in the dark: “We know, we have tested them!” For more information call 07917 005071 or visit www.slickersdoghouse.co.uk
For 40 years the team at Trevaskis Farm in Connor Downs have run a Sin Bin collection tin as part of their ‘pick your own’ operation. The idea is that people make a donation to charity in lieu of the fruit they eat when picking. It seems like folk have been very honest too and this year ‘the sinners’ have helped contribute £3,000 to Cornish healthcare charity Cornwall Hospice Care. Julie Treneer, the charity’s fundraiser in west Cornwall, says: “The Sin Bin was started by the father of current owner Giles Eustice 40 years ago when our Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell first opened. Sadly, he later died in our St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle, but the Sin Bin continued and the family have now helped raise more than £40,000 to help fund the care we provide. We can’t say a big enough thank you at the end of what has been our 40th anniversary year.” For more information call 01726 66868 (option 3) or visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk

News & views New addition to
the Duchy of Cornwall Nursery
Stay in the loop with Boscastle Farm Shop With a passion for quality that’s evident in everything they produce, the team at Boscastle Farm Shop – who won Gold for ‘Best Café’ at the Cornwall Tourism Awards, as well as Taste of the West Gold and Silver awards – are excited for what 2021 has in store.
Located at the heart of the Duchy of Cornwall estate, The Duchy of Cornwall Nursery is one of the largest and most well-respected nurseries in the south west, offering visitors a place of sanctuary, where horticulture is celebrated and nature allowed to flourish. As well as being a wonderful place to explore, the nursery is home to an inspiring shop and a café featuring local produce, making it a fantastic place to spend the day. In recent years, the café has really grown in popularity, creating the need for additional covered space for guests. The space needed to fit in with the nursery’s woodland setting, which is why the team opted to work with the team at Wild Tipi. Erected in 2019, the nursery’s new tipi and the more recent bespoke walkway have since become a feature in themselves, and the customer feedback has been brilliant!
“Working with the Duchy Nursery has been one of our most favourite projects to date,” says Sam from Wild Tipi. “Our ethos is to be immersed in nature and we could not think of anywhere more perfect. The nursery is a beautiful setting that looks across to Restormel Castle; the tipi has withstood the toughest of weathers this year and we are delighted that the team at the nursery are happy with the service that we have provided!”
Not only will the team continue to offer an array of Cornish produce in the shop, including the farm’s own Ruby Red beef and freshly baked goodies, owner Jackie informs us that they’re also set to launch a free newsletter subscription on their website, keeping followers abreast of all the latest news and foodie happenings taking place throughout the year. That’s something we can all look forward to now that 2020 is behind us, so watch this space – and be sure to sign up! For more information call 01840 250827 or visit www.boscastlefarmshop.co.uk

The result – which comes highly recommended – a ‘brew-tea-ful’ range of innovative drinks, which any lover of Cornwall should be sure to have in their cabinet. As an example, we need look no further than the Cornish Cream Tea gin – a gin-tastic take on one of the Duchy’s favourite sweet treats. N E W YO U With the dawn of a new year, there is no better time to embrace a fresh start and take control of your health and wellbeing. WORDS BY
s we say farewell to a year like no other in Cornwall and look forward to new beginnings in 2021, keeping healthy in both mind and body has never been so important. With Covid-19 still rearing its ugly head it’s essential that we treat our bodies and minds with respect. More than ever, our immune systems and mind health need to be supported and this can be achieved by a combination of nutrition, exercise and mindfulness.
I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that I find it hard when it comes to making New Year resolutions. After the end of what has been a very tough year for all, finding the motivation this January will be particularly hard. So, in a bid to embrace a fresh start of infinite possibilities I talked to some of Cornwall’s experts in the field of wellbeing, fitness and nutrition, to find some new ways of growing stronger and healthier in 2021.

January has become the traditional month for going ‘dry’. After the alcoholic excesses of the festive period, many take on the challenge to reset their relationship with alcohol at this time. But what are the true benefits of keeping off the booze? I speak with stay sober empowerment coach, Polly Jukes (pollyjukes. com) whose own personal journey to finding happiness, having more energy and feeling fulfilled led her to a career in coaching, enabling people to change their relationship with alcohol: “Alcohol is so interweaved into society and our culture; we use it to both celebrate and commiserate. It’s a highly addictive substance and as your tolerance level grows so does your consumption over time. But what if I told you that by having a break from the booze, you would sleep better, have clarity of mind, have energy and motivation, lose weight, have better skin, have more time, reduce your anxiety, have more patience, have more money and feel calmer and happier? Would you be interested? I suspect the answer would be a resounding yes!”
With the promise of all these benefits, who wouldn’t want to try and take a break. But for some, taking the first steps can be hard. Polly suggests starting by having an honest conversation with yourself about your relationship with alcohol and the consequences: “Is this something you would like to change? Get really clear on why you are going to take a break – maybe one of the many reasons above? Set yourself a challenge such as 30 days alcohol-free. I can already anticipate the questions… So, how do I reward myself then? Am I going to be boring? How do I socialise without the booze? As a coach, I am often asked these questions and it’s the same with learning any new skill, it takes practice. So my advice is to mix and change up your routine to break the habit. Tell others you are having a break; this keeps you accountable. Sign up for a charity scheme and donate what you would have spent on alcohol. Believe me, giving yourself the gift of being alcohol-free out of choice and curiosity will improve your life.”
They say you get out what you put in, so reducing or cutting down on alcohol makes perfect sense, as does being mindful about what you eat. Ali Phesse and Rob Webb (idwo.co.uk) are specialist health and wellness coaches, providing personalised programmes for individuals and companies on nutrition, exercise, and mindset, as well as food intolerance tests. Ali and Rob explain: “2020 has taught us the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. This includes balanced nutrition and regular exercise to boost our immune system and help us to overcome health conditions such as obesity, high blood pressure, and Type 2 diabetes. The problem is, with so much information out there, where do you begin?”

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT!
Your daily eating habits should include up to three meals and three snacks, but this does depend on how much activity you are doing.
Some things to consider: • Reduce white rice, white bread, white pastas, white potatoes • Limit alcohol • Keep caffeine to the mornings (milk-based coffees and teas are high in calories, not to mention the added syrup!) • Reduce sugary snacks, refined sugar in tea/coffee and artificial sweeteners • Reduce red meat and replace with fish and lean protein (plant based or animal) • Increase vegetables (aim for 7-8 portions a day) and have lots of different colours • Eat more brown rice, wholegrain breads, wholegrain pastas, and sweet potatoes • Having at least 2 litres of water a day will help improve brain and body function. Ali and Rob offer personalised nutrition programmes, visit idwo.co.uk for more details
Ali and Rob go on to explain that fad diets do not work: “They may help you lose weight in the short term (mostly water) but as you return to old habits the weight goes back on. The people that have the most success with weight loss and improving their health make long lasting lifestyle changes. The best way to understand your food is to track it for a week to see what you are eating and how much (be honest with yourself). Notice any symptoms you may get after eating certain foods (allergies and intolerances can result in bloating, skin conditions, heartburn, IBS, headaches etc). Cut out these foods or opt for alternatives for 30 days to see if you begin to feel better.” Exercise is also something that Ali and Rob promote: “There is no doubt that exercise, whether it be a walk, run, or gym session will have a positive effect on your mind and body. A brisk ten minute daily walk or 30 minutes of exercise three times a week over a three week period is proven to lift overall energy levels and mood. As we get older, strength training is even more important and crucial for maintaining healthy bones and muscles. Just as your nutrition should be balanced so should your exercise; condition your heart and lungs with walking/jogging/cycling/swimming as well as adding resistance (strength) training two to three times a week.”

“Finally, the quality and amount of sleep is important too; not only for your health and wellbeing (allowing your body to repair and renew) but also to help you live longer, improve your memory, reduce inflammation, boost creativity, improve your immune system, increase attention span and the list goes on! Aim for seven to eight hours per night.”

Sue Gibson, literally jumping for joy!
With so many forms of exercise available, I was keen to look at some different alternatives. As a runner, I would like to change up my fitness routine this year and add a bit of diversity, so I turned to Sandy and Sue Gibson of Jolly Sailor Crossfit (jollysailorcrossfit.co.uk) and BeKarma Yoga (bekarmayoga.co.uk) for some inspiration: “After serving in the Royal Navy for 22 years teaching, coaching and organising all kinds of sports and fitness, CrossFit came in to our lives around seven years ago, after Sandy completed a tour in Afghanistan. He was introduced to this methodology of fitness by the Americans that were serving there. When he came back from his Tour there were a few of us that fell in love with this kind of training. One of the reasons is how varied it is, combining cardio, gymnastics, weight lifting and body weight exercise.”

DISCOVER MORE Vitamin Sea! If land training is not for you then swimming is a great alternative. Pools have reopened and as a non-weight bearing exercise swimming can be very beneficial if you have mobility problems. We have also seen an incredible increase in the popularity of wild swimming here in Cornwall. Not only do you get the physical benefit from the exercise, research has shown that cold-water swimming in wide open spaces can also have a positive impact on both your immune system, circulation and mind health. Visit wildswimmingcornwall. co.uk for more information.
As well as both being CrossFit coaches, during Sue’s last two years in the Navy, she also completed her yoga teacher training: “Yoga has huge benefits, keeping the body supple and flexible. Lots of people will do a few stretches after exercise but it’s much more beneficial to spend longer in yoga poses to really focus on stretching and deep breathing. Yoga and CrossFit work hand in hand, as after exercise the joints and muscles get stiff and tight so it enhances recovery and prevents injuries from poor range of movement.” Sandy and Sue go on to explain that practising CrossFit gives you the full spectrum of strength, skill, gymnastics, and cardiovascular fitness as well as the mental benefits from being part of a ‘Box’ community: “We are designed to move, and to move in as many different ways as possible. At any age the joy of learning a new skill creates a great sense of achievement. This is especially true as we get older, we seem to think that we are on an irreversible decline, but we know this isn’t true and help people of all ages to realise this. And with regards to yoga; if all you ever got from a class is an hour to yourself then that in itself is already a much-needed respite in the ever busier lives we lead. But add to that relaxation and long-stretched muscles and the feeling is magnified. Yoga is great when used as a reset, a chance to just switch off from work, home and families, ensuring you are better prepared to face a new day!” Fuelled by the enthusiasm and expertise of all those that I spoke to, I am determined that my 2021 will be filled with health and happiness. So, why not join me by planning ahead and embracing the New Year with some sustainable health, nutrition and wellbeing goals that will achieve long-lasting, and possibly life-changing, results.

St Austell Penzance
A sympathetic conversion of a 19th century mill, with four double bedrooms, in an outstanding rural position close to the north coast.
xuding fabulous original character from the outside in, this wonderful home can simply be described as ‘handsome’. Characterised by open beams, vaulted ceilings and gorgeous natural stone detailing, combined with four bedrooms of contemporary accommodation, a large modern kitchen and stunning bathrooms (including two ensuites), the appeal of this 19th century mill conversion is immediately apparent as you cross the threshold. Working from the top down, three of the four bedrooms are located on the second floor, each characterful in its own unique way, with two boasting outstanding rural views of the Cornish countryside. Down to the first floor and you’ll find a wonderfully sized sitting room that enjoys impressive rural views, with a large woodburner helping to keep things cosy during the colder months. The master bedroom is also on this level, its en-suite

facilities including a shower room and a gorgeous freestanding bath, slightly elevated on its own platform within the main room. Downstairs, the sizeable kitchen – complete with granite worktops, a rangestyle cooker and a wine cooler built into the large central island – leads out via French doors to the private Mediterranean style courtyard. You’ll also find separate formal gardens to the right of the driveway – an extensive area of lawn which has been landscaped and planted with an abundance of colourful plants, shrubs and trees. Situated in a rural position on the edge of the picture-perfect and highly soughtafter village of St Mawgan, The Granary is just three miles from the sand and sea of Mawgan Porth. The wider north coast is a paradise for foodies, explorers and watersport enthusiasts alike, with celebrity owned restaurants (including those of Rick Stein, Nathan Outlaw and Paul Ainsworth), seemingly endless miles of coastal walks, and some of the best sailing waters in the UK. And as more of us seek to invest in a better at-home lifestyle, with many choosing to trade their busy lives in the city for the calm quietude of the coast, The Granary represents a superb opportunity to do so, the kind of which is becoming increasingly hard to come by.

LYNN ALLEN An imposing period residence set in private gardens, close to the heart of Cornwall’s cathedral city.
espite its proximity to the centre of Truro, Lynn Allen enjoys a wonderful sense of seclusion at the end of The Avenue – possibly one of the city’s most desirable addresses – thanks to generous grounds and beautiful mature gardens. There is also, outside, a conveniently positioned and spacious double garage, with ample space to store a boat. The garage comes with planning permission for the addition of accommodation over, however it could, with the correct permissions, offer alternative options such as an annex, consulting room or home office, depending on your needs. Heading inside, the entrance porch opens into the hallway, which makes a superb first

impression thanks to original tiling and a fabulous staircase. The reception rooms are set either side, with a spacious sitting room featuring a lovely bay window and inviting fireplace. This in turn opens through to the sun room, which has wonderful views of the garden and glimpses of the iconic spires of Truro cathedral. There is also a snug, perfect either as a home office or a games room for the kids, as well as a south-facing dining room and well-appointed kitchen, which leads on one side to a useful utility area, currently set out as a home gym. Upstairs you’ll find a total of six bedrooms; four can be found on the first floor, two of which include dressing rooms that could easily be transformed into en-suite facilities. The remaining two bedrooms occupy the second floor, serviced by a generous and well-appointed bathroom. Lynn Allen is a rarity in that, despite its proximity to the city centre, it still retains a genuine sense of space, offering ample room for a family to spread out. Add to this the potential of the aforementioned double garage, and it becomes even rarer! Put simply, for anybody hoping to truly enjoy everything that Cornwall has to offer, from its enigmatic coastlines to the cosmopolitan bustle of life in the city, a viewing of this stellar home comes highly recommended.

INFORMATION Large Regency country house Award-winning restoration Six acres’ wooded gardens Rural valley location Five bedrooms Large bespoke kitchen Ample parking Integral garage
fter what was, for many, a difficult 2020, extensive homes in Cornwall’s countryside have perhaps never been more highly coveted. Our county is home to an eclectic array of homes built in ages past, each as unique as the last, and this Regency home – just a few miles inland from the north coast – is a very fine example. Restored by the current owners, who were awarded a Certificate of Excellence by the Federation of Master Builders for their work, it is a spacious and versatile home with five bedrooms of accommodation. Living spaces on the ground floor include a drawing room, dining room, study, and even a library, while the five bedrooms include a fabulous master with a gorgeous bathroom and dressing room, plus a further guest suite. There is also a stunning kitchen with a classical Egyptian theme, featuring a bespoke and highly individual range of units, handmade from a variety of English hardwoods, as well as granite worktops, gorgeous elm flooring, and a walk-in utility/pantry room. Out into the grounds, and spread across approximately six acres, is a wonderful mix of mature trees, woodland and even a gorgeous Japanese style garden. There’s also a four-acre paddock, which has been planted with a variety of trees and a shelter-belt of Monterey pine along the northern boundary. This opens up a world of possibility, whether you have equestrian interests, are an avid
horticulturalist, or have a growing family in need of room to roam and explore. Put simply, after a 2020 marked by lockdowns and more time than ever spent at home, when many of us are dreaming of a healthier at-home lifestyle, Rosehill-in-theFern represents an opportunity like very few others on the current Cornish market.

A fabulous collection of two, three and four-bedroom homes, just a short walk from the sand and surf of Constantine Bay.
his stunning new development from Acorn Property Group lies less than a ten-minute walk from Constantine Bay, near Padstow. Known as one of the best surfing beaches in Cornwall, the beach here lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With pale sweeping sands and rolling waves, it’s one of the famed ‘Seven Bays for Seven Days’, which combine to open up a world of discovery for those who like to lace up their boots and explore. Starting at £725,000, Treglos comprises 20 contemporary apartments, duplexes and penthouses, along with eight three and four-bedroom houses with glorious sea views. Suiting a range of different buyers in search of their own slice of seaside luxury, open-plan living is very much at the heart of these new homes, all of which are designed with life by the coast in mind. They are designed to be lived in – to stand up to the rigours of a life spent exploring the local coastline – at the same time delivering a true feeling of contemporary comfort. Gorgeous designer kitchens come fully fitted with integrated Bosch and Kupperbusch appliances and beautiful stone worktops; Karndean flooring runs
throughout the hallways, living and kitchen areas, with plush soft carpets in the bedrooms. The bathrooms and en-suites, meanwhile, are fully tiled, with modern fixtures from VADO and composite stone vanity tops, and all of this is topped off with underfloor heating – a real treat during the cooler months! Acorn Blue’s design team is well versed when it comes to creating the homes that modern buyers are looking for, and Treglos is a fine example. Each home has been specifically designed around the lifestyle on offer in and around Constantine Bay, including individual surf stores, meaning you needn’t worry about dragging wet and sandy gear into your beautiful new home. Whether you’re in search of a holiday home for the summer months, or a permanent residence by the sea – one that will allow you to trade in the busy city for the gentle pace of life by the water – these fabulous new homes need seeing to be believed. Over the past three decades, Out of Wood has built an enviable reputation for maintaining the highest standards of design and craftsmanship.
pening a new showroom during the height of a recession may not sound like the beginnings of a success story. And yet, in 1991, that’s precisely what Out of Wood founder Clive Martin did, and nearly three decades later, Clive’s enthusiasm for wood working and making a house a home are still very much at the core of this exemplary Cornish business. But home improvement was not always the path that Clive saw himself following, and in fact during the 1970s, he undertook and completed a degree in politics. But, he tells us: “A growing interest in wood working and the renovation of old cottages led to a change of career and a retraining in joinery. This in turn led to an interest in design, furniture and working in quality hardwoods such as maple, ash, walnut and oak.” In short, Clive had begun shaping the vision of a company, which we now know as Out of Wood. Fast forward to the ‘80s and Clive had moved to Cornwall. “In its infancy, Out of Wood concentrated on the kitchen door replacement market, with workshop facilities on a farm on the Roseland peninsula. We still enjoy strong links with the area, and many of our present day projects are undertaken in the villages of Portscatho and St Mawes.” It wasn’t until 1991 that Out of Wood moved to their current premises on Frances Street in Truro – a bold move, considering the recession the country

was in at the time – but the team must have been doing something right, as even today that showroom is still the centre of operations, with manufacturing undertaken nearby on Threemilestone Industrial Estate. Whilst the base of operations may have remained the same for nearly three decades, Out of Wood’s offering has only continued to evolve. As well as their own bespoke kitchens Clive and the team also offer a range of 'off the peg' kitchens from English manufacturers. A wider spectrum of services is also offered for those looking to improve their homes. This includes bespoke bedrooms that capitalise on every inch of available space, as well as home offices, which are perfect for anybody joining the growing percentage of the UK workforce choosing to work from home. If it is your dream kitchen that you’re hoping to realise, then fear not – Out of Wood has not forgotten its roots. Not only can Clive and the team design and manufacture your kitchen cabinetry to suit your home – tailoring it to you and the way you intend to use it – they also have an impressive list of suppliers covering every aspect of your kitchen build, meaning you needn’t shop anywhere else. With a list of leading appliance brands, including Neff, Miele and Siemens, sinks and taps in a wide range of styles, and a wealth
of premium worktop materials, including granite, quartz and timber, when we say that Out of Wood is a ‘one-stop shop’, that’s precisely what we mean! In fact, Clive further enhanced the Out of Wood service by opening, under licence, a branch of Fired Earth in Truro. This means that you can source those all-important finishing touches from Fired Earth’s fabulous range of tiles, paints, furniture and bathroom products. So what do actual Out of Wood customers have to say? After all, you can’t just take our word for it! Fortunately, you need only visit the website to find a reel of stellar reviews, some praising the “quality of the workmanship and the design”, others saying how they are “absolutely delighted” with the finished result. “We could not have wished for a better team of people” says one happy client, while another simply says “we love our kitchen!”. With that in mind, if you’re embarking on a home improvement project this New Year and are looking for a full design and installation service that has all bases covered, why not pencil in a trip to the Out of Wood showroom?

DISCOVER MORE CASE STUDY We couldn’t offer such high praise without offering an example. Pictured above is a fabulous recent example of the quality you can expect from an Out of Wood kitchen. A great idea for flexibility when cooking is to have two ovens built into tall housings, at a height to suit the user. This gives even greater capacity than a range cooker, and with the addition of a microwave and warming drawer, all options will be covered. Adjoining this kitchen is a utility room, fitted with a useful farmhouse sink and Iroko worktops.

Along with smart home services, Company Director Owen Skinner and his team can install electrical, audio-visual, computer networking and CCTV, with the aim of bringing these separate systems together into an easy-to-use interface or app that enhances your entire domestic or commercial property. Where we excel is in hiding the technology and enhancing the look and feel of your home or business, pairing the choice of products available to us with clever lighting design.” It’s no wonder then that Intelligent Installations is receiving more requests than ever from a range of clients, including a growing number of new-build developers. Especially now, after a year that’s seen us all spend more time at home than ever! The services on offer from Intelligent Installations not only improve their clients' at-home lifestyle, they also help to future proof them and even ensure a higher resale value. This means that if you’re a home owner, architect or interior designer hoping to enhance and, at the same time, simplify the way your property is used, we highly recommend making Intelligent Installations your first port of call.

THE CORNISH Inspired by Cornwall and designed to cater to a range of lifestyle needs and budgets, Spyrys Spas & Hot Tubs unveils its own unique range of spas!
The ultimate way to relax INSET
The Spyrys team – on hand to help and advise
ext year is going to be an exciting one for Spyrys Spas & Hot Tubs, who have teamed up with one of the world’s largest manufacturers to bring their own range of hot tubs to Cornwall. “The name ‘Spyrys’ comes from the Cornish word for ‘Spirit’,” says Managing Director, Brian Kennelly, “and with our own range we wanted to offer everything we personally were looking for in a hot tub; affordability, build quality, reliability and economic costs, but most importantly, a comfortable place to relax and spend time together. “We set up Spyrys Spas & Hot Tubs when looking to purchase a hot tub for ourselves in 2012 specifically for hydrotherapy and relaxation,” continues Brian, “and now we’re drawing on our experience to specify an exciting new collection that’s unique to ourselves.” Brian comes from an engineering background in the water industry, and Sharon started her career as a Medical Secretary, so understands the benefits of hydrotherapy massage as well as the importance of long-term customer care. “We don’t like the ‘hard sell’,” says Sharon, “but we understand the value of proper customer service and helping them to choose what is best for them. We don’t push a sale or try
to upsell to something more expensive, we listen to our customers, give honest advice and then let them decide.” Spyrys Spas & Hot Tubs has grown year on year, its large indoor showroom in Wadebridge displaying a wide selection of excellent quality hot tubs to suit all lifestyles and budgets. This philosophy extends to Brian and Sharon’s new Cornish range, which consists of three specification levels and starts at just £4,995. The first is ‘Spyrys an Dowr’ (meaning ‘Spirit of Water’), and is a plug and play system. The second, named ‘Spyrys an Mor’ (Spirit of the Sea), is designed to become a family favourite, while the third, which is called ‘Spyrys an Heyl’ (Spirit of the Estuary) is a powerful hydrotherapy spa. To receive a free brochure and learn more about this fabulous new range of hot tubs, be sure to visit the Spyrys website. Better still, why not give Brian, Sharon and the team a call and arrange a visit to the showroom?

Spray Foam is one of the most versatile insulation methods currently available in the UK and Europe. Over the last few years, it has seen rapid growth as its performance, speed of application and durability outperforms just about every type of traditional, pre-manufactured insulation. Our business has been a part of that exponential growth and we are currently the only UK company who offer a complete start to finish solution.

Whether it’s drive from homeowners or because of government financial support, the UK has never been more focused on cutting carbon emissions.
ABOVE Future proof your Cornish home INSET Air-source is just one of a range of available renewable solutions
t was announced in November that the Green Homes Grant scheme will be extended. This means that homeowners now have until March 2022 to claim up to £5,000 towards the cost of installing a renewable heating solution. Since opening in 2011, Cornwall’s GreenGenUK has been at the forefront of helping homes lower both their carbon footprint and their energy bills. We catch up with GreenGen’s Neil Rollinson, to find out exactly how Cornish homes can benefit from the current support schemes, and how this stellar Cornish firm can help. “The extension of the Green Homes Grant is great news for Cornish homeowners,” explains Neil, “as they’ll now have an extra 12 months to claim £5,000 off the upfront costs of a renewable heating upgrade!” Until now, he continues: “Oil and LPG systems have been the primary heating options for a lot of homes in Cornwall, but even mains gas isn’t particularly environmentally friendly.” Fortunately, the Green Homes Grant has made air source heating a financially viable alternative for anybody wanting to upgrade their heating. Air source is a whole-house renewable heating solution, supplying a home’s heating and hot water, and is a direct renewable replacement for a gas or oil boiler. What's more, customers can still claim money back on their renewable installation retrospectively through the RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive). This means that homes
can now claim up to £5,000 towards the upfront costs of a heat pump and still benefit from further subsidy over a 7-year period. “Effectively,” says Neil, “homeowners can end up with a cost-neutral heating system that will significantly reduce their property's carbon footprint – as much as several tonnes per year. The Green Homes Grant helps with the upfront costs and the RHI covers much of the remaining costs over time.” Cornwall's homes are set for a green future thanks to the Green Homes Grant and Renewable Heat Incentive schemes. You can achieve all of this with the help of Neil and the experts at GreenGenUK, who offer complete design and bespoke installation of a range of renewable solutions, such as air source and ground source heat pumps, solar PV and battery storage, solar thermal and more. Based in Helston, with nearly a decade’s experience in the renewable industry, if you’re considering renewables here in Cornwall, we highly recommend giving the GreenGen team a call!

In a year of lockdowns, restrictions and adhering to government guidelines, 2020 has certainly been a year like no other, and one we’ll all be glad to see the back of.
l o r t n co
hether through furlough, redundancy or working longer hours to fit around childcare, home-schooling or other family responsibilities, the ever-evolving situation has afforded many of us an opportunity to reevaluate our careers and work/life balance. Although returning to work or finding a new job has been the route many people have taken, one of the biggest movements witnessed throughout all this has been the growing number of brave individuals willing to take that leap of faith, strike out on their own and start their own business. Back in November, Outset Cornwall reported receiving over 300 enquiries and referrals, with over 250 people joining the programme in recent months, despite the global pandemic. Kate Perkin, Programme Director at Outset, commented: “The fact we’ve seen so many enquiries and referrals proves the entrepreneurial spirit hasn’t diminished here in Cornwall. We’ve seen a real variety of ideas coming through; from people wanting to repurpose their existing skills and experience to honing their hobbies and passions into sustainable businesses. For them, Outset offers a fantastic opportunity to do all the groundwork first, building solid foundations
from which to launch a new business when the time is right.” But when exactly is that ‘right’ time? Should you wait until the current economic situation changes? Well, if you look at Airbnb, FedEx, WhatsApp, Groupon and Uber, these hugely successful companies were all started during economic recessions. Despite it sounding counter-intuitive, starting a business during an economic slump means it is much more likely to have the tools and resilience to fly when the economy improves. So even though the situation we’re going through will undoubtedly bring permanent changes to how we live, work, shop and do business, there are plenty of opportunities for start-ups willing to adapt and embrace those changes. Think you simply don’t have the time? Let’s take a look at busy mum and business owner Sophie Tilston, who managed to continue working, take care of and home-school her children, and still find time to launch her own business during lockdown! Now, Sophie runs a successful business from her seaside studio

in Falmouth doing something she loves; handmaking, printing and retailing eclectic homeware and fashion accessories. She says: “As a busy mum to three children, I’m used to multi-tasking and getting the most out of every minute. Running a business I love now gives me the freedom to work any time I choose.” Don’t have the cashflow or funds to get your idea off the ground? Faced with the challenge of raising funds to produce her garments, plus developing her designs and adapting them to suit tall women’s various shapes and sizes, Cassie Davey’s confidence and selfbelief was in tatters. But with Outset’s help, she devised a way to achieve her goal. “A few weeks in, I was really struggling to focus and questioning whether I could actually do this,” says Cassie. “But speaking with one of Outset’s brilliant advisors helped me refocus, challenged my thinking and gave me a much-needed ‘lightbulb’ moment; launch a Crowdfunder campaign.” Featuring a host of rewards that included one of her exclusive designs, Cassie reached and exceeded her crowdfunding targets, raising enough funds to start production of her pieces, ready for the official launch of her new business, Tall & Beautiful Clothing Ltd, in spring 2021.
Don’t think you have the skills and knowledge you need to get started? It’s true: running a business requires a wide range of skills, and you won’t be good at everything straight away. Getting the right support is crucial so that you don’t feel overwhelmed, as Jo Hague from Lostwithiel discovered when she started her sustainable textile art business during lockdown. She says: “Do a business start-up course so that you’re fully aware of what having your own business entails. Outset’s programme was incredibly useful - I’ve learnt so many different elements to running a business, plus it’s helped me get my full product range online and generate sales, even during lockdown.” Funded by the European Regional Development Fund, HM Government and the Outset Foundation, Outset Cornwall has been helping people start their own businesses since 2009, offering a flexible, award-winning business start-up programme that supports you through every step of your business journey, from developing your first ideas through to planning and launching your business. Starting your own business or going self-employed can be daunting but having the right support behind you can make it exciting, exhilarating and incredibly rewarding. So what’s stopping you?

A CARING APPROACH There are countless agencies that can represent your holiday let, and choosing the right one is a big decision. MAIN Do you have a coastal property?
hen it comes to choosing an agency to represent your holiday let, should you choose a big national brand, or a local agency? Forever Cornwall owner, Phil Gendall, gives us five reasons why it makes sense to choose one that really cares for owners and guests, as well as the environment!
Caring leads to success The first question we are always asked is about occupancy and income. Rest assured, we have some of the highest occupancy levels and property incomes possible. We achieve this by helping you to present your home in the best possible way, and by looking after every customer – because we believe that caring is the key to success.
Knowing you and your holiday home If an agency has hundreds or even thousands of cottages listed, are these impressive numbers or a warning sign? When considering an agency, ask yourself if they really know about the homes and the owners that they represent. We help our owners with expert letting advice that’s tailored to them, and not a one size fits all approach.
Targeted expert marketing We are a 100% independent local agency, which helps us to deliver highly effective marketing too. We know both Cornwall and our guests inside out, allowing us to target the right places at the right people. Our digital communications expertise combined with our professional property and design services will
ensure your holiday home is a roaring success. Can a nation-wide agency offer you that?
Enviable customer service Forever Cornwall is proud to have ‘grown slowly’, and our friendly and focused customer service team has built a community of loyal guests. First-rate customer service achieves excellent return rates and great recommendations. Just ask Google, Feefo or any other review site. If an agency can’t provide this, walk away.
Bringing homes to life with expert interior design
Thinking local and global We shouldn’t only think about the bottom line these days. Guests are increasingly demanding that businesses play their part in protecting the environment and supporting the local economy. Being a Cornish business, Forever Cornwall has always done this by partnering with local business and charities. We also proudly offset the carbon impact from the business and cottages. So, if you want to begin the letting journey or are looking to change agencies, why not consider one that looks after you, your home and income, and the environment. To find out more, visit the Forever Cornwall website, or for no-commitment advice, be sure to give the team a call.

The team tailors their foodie offering around the local suppliers that operate within just a few miles, from freshly caught fish from local boats and organic meat supplied by Trevarthens, to the salad grown at Falmouth’s Soul Farm. Head Chef Sam Tomlinson’s passion for food started at a young age, but surprisingly his career began working in secondary school classrooms. For a couple of years, before pursuing his passion for food, Sam taught History and Law, but when the opportunity arose to join Emma – his partner, and manager at UpperDeck – he jumped at the chance! Drawing influence from his time cooking in Australia, as well as at a host of other Cornish restaurants, Sam’s uniquely playful way of cooking has long since become a firm favourite among returning locals and visitors alike.
But it’s not just Sam and the team’s foodie offering that have made UpperDeck such a firm favourite. The venue has become well known for entertainment, hosting a calendar of musical evenings that are always packed out. Of course, the Coronavirus pandemic has put paid to those for the time being, but Emma assures us: “As soon as we are allowed to run such nights again, we certainly will!” Under Emma’s leadership, the UpperDeck team have gained a superb reputation, welcoming locals and weary travellers to stop and stay a while in the comforts that this hidden foodie haven has to offer. Every member of staff strives to offer the utmost attentiveness and care, ensuring that whether you’re stopping for a quick lunchtime bite or a delicious three-course evening meal, you’ll leave feeling happy and full, and more than likely wondering when you’ll next be able to visit!

SOMETHING DIFFERENT Bringing a twist on the traditional, The Bottle is Newquay’s newest deli, wine bar and eatery, and so far, it’s been a soaring success! ABOVE Sociable dining after the most unsociable 2020!
ucked away behind the main high street, The Bottle is in an up-andcoming area of Newquay where a number of new and independent businesses are popping up. As a neighbourhood restaurant, it is a frequent haunt for local residents. The Bottle is a unique venue in that it is a wine bar and eatery serving sharing boards and plates of cheeses and meats, alongside European inspired small plates. It also hosts a deli counter and a wine shop with a wide variety of wines from around the world. Owners Rob and Toyah dreamed up The Bottle during the first lockdown and opened their doors on 3rd August 2020. Whilst many at the time said it was a brave move to make opening a new bar and restaurant during the current climate, it’s fair to say they’ve made it a success, and with bookings being made weeks ahead and weekends frequently being fully booked, it is safe to say this simple concept is proving popular. The Bottle focuses on sociable dining in what has been seen as a decidedly unsociable period, with boards of cheeses and cured meats available to share and served alongside a large selection of wine. It’s the perfect venue for almost any occasion; whether it be a date night, a night out with family or a catch up with friends, the warm and friendly environment at The Bottle will make any night feel special.
The Bottle also has a wine shop, which means that whilst restrictions are in place you can still enjoy great wine by taking one of their many bottles home at the end of the night. They also offer a refillable wine service, meaning you can enjoy wine whilst also doing your part for the environment. With several reds, whites and rosés on offer on tap, there is something for everyone available to enjoy. The deli counter also has a number of delicious offerings for you to take away. With a strong focus on small British cheese producers and seasonal European cheese, The Bottle is the place to go for your at-home cheeseboard selection. Rob and Toyah have also just launched The Bottle At Home – offering hampers for collection or UK delivery, brimfull of cheese, wine and delicious meats. To put it all quite simply, if you’re in search of something different to what’s available in your local supermarket, a trip to The Bottle, Newquay, comes highly recommended!

TAX TALK Steve Maggs from RRL Cornwall discusses the importance of tax considerations, for both individuals and businesses alike.
How is tax likely to affect your lifestyle? INSET
Steve Maggs, Tax Partner at RRL Cornwall
RL Cornwall specialises in providing tax advice – increasing clients’ knowledge of taxation and how it impacts them and their business. Steve Maggs, a Tax Partner at the firm, says: “Tax is one of the largest outlays for any individual and business, and therefore should really require the requisite level of consideration and experienced advice.” As a society, Steve continues: “We underestimate the impact tax has on our lives, and it is a tax advisor’s role to advise on the tax impact of an existing situation or set of circumstances, the impact of changing the situation, and to attempt to advise on projected future changes. Tax changes are moments that enhance this requirement, as changes always create opportunities and risks.” So, what changes can we expect at the beginning of the new tax year from 6th April? “In the next Budget,” Steve tells us, “we are expecting a number of key changes.” In fact, he reveals: “It will likely be the most significant Budget since 2008.”
Capital Gains Tax Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is a tax on profits and gains made on the sale of assets, for example property, shares or land, and Steve believes the rates are likely to significantly increase in the new tax year. For those liable for CGT, business owners can currently benefit from Business Asset Disposal Relief (formerly called ‘Entrepreneur’s Relief) – a favourable 10% CGT rate for business assets, including interests in your own business or family business, however Steve explains that “this relief could be significantly restricted or abolished”. What’s more, he says: “A significant reduction in the annual exemption [an individual or business’ taxfree allowance] will likely mean that more people will pay Capital Gains Tax, and that more will have to report disposals to HMRC.” Inheritance Tax (IHT) Another form of taxation it’s worth seeking advice on is Inheritance Tax (IHT). This is payable on an individual’s death or
68 | CORNWALL LIVING
in relation to certain gifts made during their lifetime. “The rate is currently 40%, meaning significant tax liabilities can arise if planning is not considered or overlooked,” explains Steve. Just as changes are expected with Capital Gains Tax, he tells us that they’re also expected with IHT, particularly in relation to favourable reliefs that apply to business assets and unquoted shares (called Business Property Relief) and agricultural land (called Agricultural Property Relief). “People owning these assets,” says Steve, “should consider their IHT position, and seek advice where they are relying on these reliefs.” Pension Contributions The next tax year, it seems, is also set to bring with it the removal of higher-rate income tax relief on pension contributions, something Steve explains has been predicted for many years. “Given the heightened strain on the public finances due to the Covid-19 pandemic, you would have to expect that there is a danger of this change now being made.”
ABOVE RRL can help you navigate the complex field of tax liability
There are some rumoured changes that Steve doesn’t foresee coming into force, for instance an annual wealth tax, significant income tax, NIC or VAT changes, or a more radical overhaul of inheritance tax. That said, there are enough changes coming into play next year that it makes sense to take the chance to have a think about how tax is likely to impact you, your family and your business. If that is your New Year’s resolution, then be sure to contact Steve and the team of Chartered Accountants at RRL Cornwall.

Many people have been attracted to a career in care through the rewards of varied and sociable daily activities, with a secure income whatever the economic climate, and endless opportunities to learn and develop skills at times to suit them. Rachel Olsen joined Bluebird Care after 10 successful years in hospitality, where she rose to the role of restaurant manager, and then moved into sales supplying fresh produce to restaurants and other food outlets. After the birth of her son earlier this year, she wanted a more rewarding role where she would make a difference to people’s lives, so applied to become a carer. “Every day is different,” she says, “it is the best decision I have made, I just love going home at the end of the day feeling I have helped someone else to have a good day!” After 35 years working as a butcher, another recent recruit to Bluebird Care has gone from making award-winning pasties to caring for vulnerable people after a chance encounter in the street. David Collings
became a butcher aged 15 and thought he would do this job for the rest of his life, but was impressed by the extraordinary care and compassion given by care staff when his father suffered a stroke. So when he was stopped by a woman asking for help to take her husband with Parkinson’s disease to a GP appointment, he decided to change his life. David says he couldn’t be happier after changing careers. ‘Cornwall Needs You Now!’ is the urgent message from the Proud to Care Cornwall website. There are already over 26,000 people working in care organisations across Cornwall, but many more are needed, and there couldn't be a better time than now to plan for a more certain future with a rewarding career in care.
