I

to the September issue of Cornwall Living

can’t believe that we’re more than half way through the year already, and what a year it has been! As restrictions have been lifted it has been so lovely to be able to get out and about, exploring favourite places and discovering new ones. I have been relishing the simple pleasures – flat whites with friends, lunch with the ladies and sipping sundowners while watching the boats bob on the ocean. All while spending locally, doing what I can in a small way to help the Cornish economy back to its feet. It’s struck me over the last few weeks that actually there is nowhere I would rather be at the moment. Cornwall has everything; golden sand beaches, endless cliff walks and a great foodie scene topped off with a mild climate. It’s no wonder that the Duchy has been the destination of choice for many visitors this year and for some, one holiday a year here just isn’t enough. Holiday home lodge ownership is becoming more and more popular as I found out when composing this month’s cover feature – turn to page 20 to discover more. The county’s property market is still reassuringly buoyant and this issue we take a look inside some stunning homes from page 27, and for furnishing your dream home we have some great interior inspiration from page 40. Now is also a great time to treat yourself to a little something special, I think we deserve it, don’t you? With that in mind, from page 66, you’ll find some wonderful jewellery, gifts and artworks from local artists, designers and makers. Stay safe and happy reading!

A safe and

cultural retreat

Wheal Martyn Clay Works reopened to visitors in early July, having implemented essential steps to ensure the safety of visitors and staff. Pre-booking of timed tickets is now required, enhancing the space, tranquillity and safety of the grounds. A new outdoor summer exhibition is opening this August. ‘#CelebrateClay Country’ celebrates the unique industrial landscapes of mid Cornwall – a project borne out of the limitations of lockdown. During a period when people were not able to enjoy the clay landscape in person, Wheal Martyn’s social media followers shared over 200 images of clay country and what the landscape meant to them. Book a visit to explore! For more information call 01726 850362 or visit www.wheal-martyn.com

Could you be your own boss?

Spending the past four months in lockdown has certainly made many people in the UK start thinking differently about their working lives. From being furloughed to working longer hours, or even facing redundancy, there’s no doubt many of us have had cause to give serious thought to where our careers are headed recently. While many people are keen to get back to work and how things were, there are also a fair number eager to embrace change, leave behind the 9-to-5 and start something amazing of their own. o where do you start ell, first you need a brilliant idea that you can turn into a profita le usiness. s lockdown forced people to spend more time at home, and therefore online, many new entrepreneurs seized the opportunity to develop existing hobbies and explore using online platforms to sell their products, achieving amazing success in a short space of time. Some even managed to turn their side hustles into si figure turno er

businesses during lockdown, by cleverly adapting their products or selling model to suit such uncertain times. One thing today’s entrepreneurs would all agree on is they couldn’t have achieved their success without the right support. With an award-winning programme, funded by the European Regional Development Fund, that’s helped over 1,000 individuals start successful businesses across the county in the last 10 years, the right support is something Outset Cornwall has in spades. So if you dream of being your own boss and have the seed of an idea, contact Outset and start turning your dream into a reality. Camel Creek raises 20K for the NHS! One of Cornwall’s favourite family attractions, Camel Creek Adventure Park, has raised more than £20,000 for the NHS during lockdown, through the sale of cut-price tickets. The creation of limited edition, cut-price day tickets saw half of the proceeds going to fund protective equipment for local healthcare workers who ha e een supporting the fight against Coronavirus in the south west. Having raised this incredible amount, Camel Creek visited Royal Cornwall Hospital, Treliske, to present them with a cheque for £20,500!

Alexis Camelin, General Manager of the park, says: “It’s the least we could do to help support Cornwall’s health workers who have been working tirelessly throughout lockdown to keep us all safe. Now the park is open again, it’s wonderful to welcome visitors back, many of whom contributed to these fundraising efforts by pre-booking those cut-price tickets.” For more information call 01841 540276 or visit www.camelcreek.co.uk

Of course, handleless kitchens are not really without handles. The ergonomically shaped recess rail handles are perfectly positioned on the carcass to enable comfortable access to doors, drawers and pull-outs. This unique design enables you to add LED strip lighting under the worktops to create a luxurious ambience. To see this style in person, visit the Kitchen Kit showroom on Threemilestone Industrial Estate, where the stunning

A safe way to shop

Working as a nurse, Gail’s romantic and light hearted fiction draws on her own experiences with her characters who are influenced y people she knows or has known in the past, giving all a special meaning. From the surf at Polzeath, to the small streets of Polperro and the picturesque harbour of Mevagissey, Gail’s books take the reader on a journey through some of the south west’s special locations. The Lady and Castles are already in print and available to buy on the Austin Macauley website or on Amazon. And watch this space, because two upcoming new stories are also in the pipeline, exploring life as a nurse in two very different eras, each promising to be equally as captivating as the other. Having responded to concerns surrounding the current pandemic, Alfred Smith & Son in Penzance is now running an appointment system that ensures you can shop safely and with confidence. Having been at the heart of west Cornwall for more than 200 years, Alfred Smith & Son is the Duchy’s oldest family run business – a success that’s largely down to the company’s ability to adapt to e en the most di cult circumstances. Sue Calvert, who owns the store, knows that nothing is more important than happy customers, and at a time like this, that means doing everything in her power to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everybody that crosses the threshold. Even for those in west Cornwall who can’t leave their homes,

Cards for care One of the positives of lockdown was the chance to get organised, so how about continuing the theme and buying your Christmas cards now? Cornish healthcare charity, Cornwall Hospice Care, has just launched its 2020 range that features local themes, alongside the more traditional snowmen and sleighs. The cards are available in those of the charity’s shops that have been able to reopen, and on the charity’s eBay site. “Our Christmas cards are always popular,” says Frazer Hopkins from Cornwall Hospice Care. “Last year sales raised £50,000, enough to fund more than one nurse for a year.”

In safe hands As Cornwall’s salons, hairdressers and clinics begin opening after lockdown, finding a practitioner you can trust is not as easy as it may seem, particularly when it comes to aesthetic treatments like wrinkle rela ation, fillers, or skin and hair rejuvenation. Not only is there little legislation over who can deliver these services, there’s also a huge variety of treatments available. Fortunately, Dr Stolte, who heads up the doctor-led MEDfacials clinic in Truro, is well aware of how tricky the aesthetic world can be to navigate. With that in mind, during lockdown, he offered his clients personal online consultations and virtual wellbeing support. He also updated his online shop, making it even easier to maintain, or discover, the perfect skincare regime. n short, if you’ e een wanting to find out more a treatment, be it hair and skin rejuvenation, anti-ageing care, or other treatments, Dr Stolte and the MEDfacials team come highly recommended! For more information call 01872 229740 or visit www.medfacials.com

“Our hospices have remained open 24/7 throughout the pandemic,” continues Frazer, “our beds are full and our key

nursing workers are on duty and caring for those who need us most. The simple act of buying Christmas cards will help us to continue providing this care, free of charge, to families in Cornwall.” For more information visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk

Pay a flying visit! For excitement for all the family in a unique setting, where better to visit than the Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre? There, you’ll have the chance to explore an ama ing collection of jet fighters, om ers, in flight refuelling tankers and other aircraft, all set in and around a fully functional Cold-War hardened aircraft shelter, right alongside Newquay Airport’s active main runway. Climb into the Hawker Hunter GA11 transonic jet fighter measures permitting , then try out the hi fidelity simulator and fly the same aircraft out of Newquay Airport and around Cornwall! Tour the aerospace equipment and clothing exhibits and the incredible collection of 1,500 aircraft models, before picking up a memento at the excellent gift shop and grabbing a bite from the handy café.

With something unforgettable for everybody to enjoy, fully compliant with the go ernment’s regulations, The Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre is a must-visit for any family this summer. For more information call 01637 861962 or visit www.cornwallaviationhc.co.uk

New exhibition from Kurt Jackson Opening on 29th August at the Jackson Foundation Gallery, St Just, Kurt Jackson’s exhibition, ‘A Prehistoric Cornwall’, sees him visit the relics of prehistoric Cornwall and celebrate the county’s extraordinary range of ancient monuments with a new series of paintings. These monuments are an important and integral part of the Cornish landscape and its culture; they are a piece of Cornwall’s heritage. “These are extraordinary places to visit, to draw and to point,” explains Kurt. “As the

eye, the hand, or the feet follow the features, the mind also wanders, trying to find meaning and explanation.” The exhibition is presented in partnership with the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty partnership, and whether your interest is in the creative arts, Cornish history, or both, it’s certainly not an event you’ll want to miss. An authentic

experience

The Museum of Cornish Life offers a fascinating insight into Cornwall’s rich heritage. The museum building was originally designed as the town’s market house in 1837. Today, it retains the original sloping floor, which adds to the authenticity of your visit as you journey back in time. In front of the museum is a cannon, salvaged from the wreck of the frigate HMS Anson, which foundered off Loe Bar in 1807. Around 100 sailors’ lives were lost, inspiring Henry Trengrouse to invent the ‘Rocket’ lifesaving apparatus, which can be found inside the museum. The museum contains a vast social history collection. Dating from the 18th to the 20th century, the range of objects covers farming, fishing, law and order, home life, toys, sports, gardening and transport. Visit the museum website for how to book your free visiting slot. For more information visit call 01326 564027 or visit www.museumofcornishlife.co.uk

Meet the new Head at Truro School Founded in 1880, Truro School is Cornwall’s leading independent school for girls and boys aged 3 to 18, and this September, Andy Johnson is set to take up the Headship. As we catch up with him about his new role, he explains how the school has evolved over the past few months, and delves into the priorities for the year ahead.

Creative opportunities were found to encourage peer-to-peer collaboration, constructive competition, and mutual support.” This exemplary school is committed to being a beacon of inclusive excellence and progression: “In order to be the best we can be of ourselves, Truro School always seeks to reflect, learn and e ol e. here continues to be much detailed planning, and I thank all the staff, teaching and non-teaching, and pupils and parents for their support and patience in this regard.

At the moment, we fully intend to begin next term with all pupils and staff on site, and we are confident in our a ility to mo e between on site and remote education if local or national circumstances dictate that we must at any time.” ndy finishes y telling us that all of the school’s planning is done with a view to ensuring that the key priorities for the school community are not, at any time, adversely affected by the pandemic: “The wellbeing of the children and adults, their access to and enefit from the highest quality education available, and our ongoing and absolute commitment to empowering young people’s futures.” For more information visit www.truroschool.com

“This has been a very challenging time for us all, but we are pleased to have been able to act and respond to support our own educational family, and, just as importantly, the wider community.” At the start of the pandemic, Andy explains: “Truro School had set up a programme that was both ambitious and sustainable, one that would provide pupils with the opportunity to progress, to explore exciting ways of learning, and, crucially, to balance interactive screen time with independent academic and wider curiosity. “We drew on and enhanced our digital resources, whilst ensuring that learning and teaching online remained inclusive for

When Samuel Jones accepted the role of Head Chef earlier this year, he could never have anticipated the impending, nationwide lockdown. But he’s spent his time wisely, curating a more contemporary menu, with foreign influences that draw on his training in London, his travels, and his years spent working at Kota in Porthleven. am is also a fisherman, and he tells us remember saying to a good friend of mine that want to e a le to tell a customer that the fish they are eating, caught, in that oat, over there.” Now, that dream has come true, and Sam sources as much as possible from fisherman, farms and producers on the Lizard. H

ave you just spent a dream holiday in Cornwall and are now yearning to come back on a more regular basis? If the answer’s yes, then purchasing a lodge on one of Cornwall’s luxury sites could unlock a lifetime of Cornish escapes for you and your family. Lodge ownership has transformed how we holiday and is becoming more and more popular, especially with recent restrictions and uncertainty over foreign travel. The staycation market in the UK (and Cornwall is no exception) is booming, and now has never been a better time to invest in your holiday future. With this in mind, we wanted to investigate some of the enefits of lodge ownership here in the Duchy and reveal some great holiday lifestyle ownership opportunities. So where to begin? Well there’s no doubt that location, location, location is going to be the main priority for most. Holiday home sites in Cornwall occupy some spectacular positions, from coastal parks with glorious sea views to tranquil countryside areas. Each offer a unique setting, whether you’re looking for a vibrant family park or a quieter couple’s retreat. t’s worth planning a fact finding trip to look at all of the sites on offer; you could even rent a lodge in the park you think you might want to buy into, to get a real feel for the site and the local area. Price is also going to be high on the list of things to consider. The demand for coastal real estate in Cornwall has resulted in high prices and prime locations are often snapped up very quickly. Suitable, traditional ‘bricks and mortar’ holiday homes can be above budget for some, so lodge ownership can often be a more cost-effective solution. Purchase of a lodge, or static caravan, does not incur stamp duty and conveyancing fees upfront as well as the ongoing council tax, maintenance bills and security issues of a traditional second home.

Lodge sites are usually gated communities, with on-site, year-round security for your peace of mind. On many sites, you can also sub-let your lodge, renting out any unwanted weeks to give you a return on your investment. Some parks will even handle the letting for you, while others offer a guaranteed rental return. Shared use is also a great enefit. wning a lodge can be a fantastic way to ensure that multi generations of family are able to enjoy the enefits of a holiday in ornwall. Although there can be the option of purchasing pre-owned lodges, buying a brand new lodge will usually give you access to the est offers, while enefiting from the most modern design and specification. his option will also give you the greatest choice of location. Facilities are another consideration, particularly for families. Play parks, swimming pools, on-site entertainment venues, restaurants and shops are just some of the conveniences that can make your holiday that little bit easier.

On larger sites, and there are even some that have private beaches, you can park your car outside your private lodge and not need to move it again for the duration of your stay. Everything you need to spend a dreamy holiday can be right on your doorstep. However, lodge companies realise that this isn’t for everyone and so many offer quieter sites as part of their portfolios for those looking for the simpler pleasures. Aria Resorts (ariaresorts.co.uk) currently has fi e resorts in ornwall to choose from Newquay Bay Resort, Newperran, Retallack Resort and Spa, Widemouth Fields and Bude Holiday Resort. The lodges start from just £91,995 but there is also the choice of some super-luxurious options available with roof terraces and sunken hot tubs to give you the very best holiday home lifestyle. Investment properties at Retallack Resort and Spa start from £225,000. Aria's lodges are a brilliant holiday home option because of their size and spaciousness and the fact that they also come fully furnished and with a really high level of lu ury. t wouldn t e unusual to find walk-in wardrobes, breakfast bars, en-suite bathrooms, larders and all-important wine coolers in your property. Aria Resorts’ lodges enefit from easy upkeep, great facilities and often those managed letting options we mentioned too, so you can earn a bit of cash to help cover your costs.

Aria Resorts is also breaking the mould of holiday home ownership in Cornwall with its brand new barn-style lodges at its newest holiday home development, The Meadows, which you will find at fi e star etallack Resort and Spa. Available in two, three and four-bedroom options, these boutique holiday homes are sold with a structural warranty, 999 year lease, which means they can be purchased with a mortgage and resold on the open market. They enjoy peaceful lakeside and countryside settings with designer interiors and unique architectural designs which are striking. These brand new lodges are also ideal for buy-to-let buyers as Aria offers the choice of a managed letting ser ice or fi ed return option which is available to qualifying investors (terms and conditions apply). ou’ll find some stunning lodge resorts in Padstow, Porthtowan and Perranporth courtesy of Valley Resorts (valleyresorts. co.uk) with holiday homes starting from £130,000. If you are considering lodge ownership as an investment then the experts there can give advice on investment yields based on previous holiday rentals. If you need finance to support your purchase they can also help you to find appro ed major lenders for each site. Valley Resorts has recognised that the uncertainty around the impact of Brexit, the state of the British economy and the Coronavirus pandemic has seen visitors and investors reviewing their options. An unprecedented level of enquiries in the first half of this year has een dri en y people now feeling more secure in making decisions that are based on investing in the UK. Prospective buyers have realised that Cornwall, and in turn Valley Resorts’ locations, provide a guest-accessible, cost-effective in estment opportunity, plus the enefit of being easily available for their own use as and when they want. ot only is there a cost enefit, ut alley Resorts ownership means your second home-

With eight holiday parks across Cornwall, wherever you choose to take your holiday in Cornwall, you’ll be able to enjoy fantastic facilities on park, from swimming pools to bars and restaurants. atherine ynn, hief ustomer cer at arkdean esorts, said he orona irus pandemic has really affected many parts of our lives in 2020, including how we holiday, with many would-be holidaymakers being stuck at home. However, our data gives us cause for optimism. We expect to see a big upturn in the staycation market this summer, and beyond into 2021. We are so excited that our parks are reopening all over the country, giving people the opportunity to see all the amazing things that the UK has to offer, in a safe and clean environment. INFORMATION

Penhalls Way in Playing Place is a particularly sought-after area. On the edge of the village, it has a green and leafy feel, with individual properties that are, on the whole, nicely spaced apart. For families, the fact that Kea School is nearby is a big draw, as is the easy road access to Truro and Falmouth. A local shop and ost ce cater to e eryday needs, and only slightly further afield you’ll find there are plenty of walks to e enjoyed. Add to all of this the gorgeous nearby gardens of Trelissick, the neighbouring village of Feock, as well as Loe beach, with its renowned watersports facilities, and there’s a lifestyle opportunity here quite unlike much else on the Cornish market. To see it for yourself, be sure to arrange a private viewing with the agents at Clive Pearce!

PROPERTY | TINTAGEL

TREBREA LODGE A Grade II* listed 18th century manor house that’s been lovingly restored, bringing it well and truly into the 21st century.

E

 BELOW Beautifully situated in mature grounds

ven for those who dare to dream this may seem like a fantasy, but take it from us, it isn’t! An imposing property near Tintagel, overlooking the opalescent waters of the north coast, Trebrea Lodge nestles in approximately four acres of mature grounds, with stunning sea and countryside views. It’s approached via a private gated entrance, with a large circular gra el dri eway, making for first impressions that rarely marry up to the modesty of its name. You need only explore the outside to get a sense of how much work has gone into the home in recent years. The current owners commissioned British landscape architect, Jinny Blom, to develop detailed concept designs to restore the grounds to their original splendour, including a terraced garden which rises up to a woodland/ orchard, also encompassing a flat lawn area – the perfect spot for a tennis court. But it’s as you step inside the main accommodation that Trebrea really starts to ‘wow’.

The lodge – grand and distinctive – is very well appointed, arranged o er three floors with a mix of original slate and solid oak floors. mmaculate sash windows and wooden shutters frame the far-reaching views, and the interiors feel warm and contemporary whilst, at the same time, retaining much of the original charm you’d expect from a listed home. Upstairs, the master bedroom, with its unique, open-plan en-suite, is a real show stopper! In addition to the main ‘lodge’, you’ll also find re rea tudio and re rea nne which, between them offer additional ancillary accommodation. Perfect for guests or dependant relatives, the studio and annex each boast their own off road parking and gardens and enjoy spectacular ocean views. They are in need of restoration, which makes this a fantastic opportunity to develop the accommodation to your own specification, e that for visitors, or perhaps to capitalise on Cornwall’s growing staycation market.

teeped in myth and legend, near y Tintagel is most famous for its 12th century castle ruins, rumoured once upon a time to have been the residence of King Arthur and his round table. Take a stroll along this fabled stretch of coastline and down to Merlin’s Cave, or simply soak up the natural beauty of the headlands, where the cliffs teem with wildlife and from which you can often see seals playing in the water below. Tintagel is also within easy reach of Boscastle, Polzeath, Newquay and Bude, as well as the sheltered harbour of Padstow and the tidal waters of the Camel Estuary. Between them, they have a staggering selection of activities for you to enjoy, alongside nationally renowned galleries, celebrity owned restaurants, and for those who like to lace up their boots, some of the finest land and seascapes that ornwall has to offer. There are several excellent golf courses within easy reach too, plus many fantastic Cornish gardens, including the

globally renowned Eden Project. In all, this is a truly exceptional – and incredibly rare – opportunity to invest in the highly coveted north Cornwall coast. t’s not often that you find a period manor house like this on the market, no matter one that’s been restored to the most exacting standards. Add to this the fact that it has the ery est of ornwall at its fingertips, and it’s fair to assume that Trebrea Lodge will not be on the market for long. With that in mind, be sure to contact John Bray and Partners to arrange a private viewing.

uring these unprecedented times, it has, nevertheless, been a busy summer for Newquay based Oltco. Indeed, having once again proved its ability to move with the times, Oltco is incredibly grateful to have achieved such a high level of business growth in the face of such adversity. Dedicated to transforming spaces with high-quality products and providing excellent customer service, it’s Oltco’s forward-thinking solutions that have placed the business at the top of its game. 2019 saw Oltco win ‘Product of the Year’ in the Cornwall Business Awards, whilst being crowned ‘South West Disruptor of the Year’ in the NatWest Entrepreneur of the Year Awards. These accolades were well-deserved and are testament to its excellent product and innovative solutions. The Oltco story began in 2004 as a family business selling and installing non-slip solutions for homes and businesses. Since then the company has completed jobs across Cornwall for prestigious businesses such as the Headland Hotel and the Eden Project. Successfully introducing its exciting new sustainable product Recyle Bound over a year ago, Oltco has already managed to recycle over 40 million plastic straws in resin installations across the country.

After expanding its franchise offering by a massive 450% in 2019, Oltco is proud to announce the launch of a further 10 franchises across the UK since March. Here at Oltco HQ in Cornwall, Oltco has also recruited more Franchise Account Managers, Labourers and Installers to join their growing team, capitalising on its successes and creating more job opportunities for the local community. Co-Director Johnny Pearce says: “We are delighted to be expanding our HQ team and to welcome even more people to the Oltco family. We are fortunate enough that our business continues to grow significantly allowing us to e pand our HQ team and offer new jobs. We are also proud to have launched over 20 franchises throughout the UK.” In recognition of its success Oltco wanted to reward its staff while supporting local businesses. So, Oltco Directors Johnny and Tom gave all the Oltco Cornwall staff a bonus to spend exclusively at one of Cornwall’s amazing local businesses. Now that’s certainly a success story to be proud of!

W

Moving home needn’t be the stressful experience we all think it is. Not when you have the help of M.J. Christophers & Son.

hether you’re relocating overseas, moving to Cornwall, or simply need a company you can trust to help move an individual item to or from storage, there is a business here in Cornwall that’s been tried and trusted for more than 45 years. Offering removals and containerised storage throughout the county – to both domestic and commercial clients – the M.J. Christophers & Son service also extends to Europe and around the world. What really sets the team apart, however, is their commitment to care on each and every removal, having succeeded over three generations by offering excellent value and second-to-none customer service. In short, your home and belongings could not be in safer hands.

Last year, company owner, Mike decided it was time to update their online presence, and so set about having a brand-new website developed. The goal? To help make your move, whatever the scale, as straight forward as possible. The website presents all the information you need, along with answers to the most frequently asked questions, in a concise and easy-tomanage format.

This includes quality packing materials that are designed to meet your every need and ensure your most prized possessions are kept safe and secure in transit. As if all of that isn't enough, the team also offer downloadable documents on the website, designed to help get your move underway. These include a ‘Helpful Hints and Tips on Moving Home’ sheet, as well as a ‘Moving Check List’, helping you to plan the logistics of your move weeks in advance. And therein lies the ethos ehind this e emplary ornish firm whether you’re moving to or from Cornwall, be that within the UK or around the world, the team strives to make one of life’s most stressful experiences as stress-free and seamless as possible. And with a website arming you with all the information you’re likely to need, in addition to a host of first class re iews from countless happy customers, it almost goes without saying that M.J. Christophers & Son come highly recommended.

"

For instance, if you’re moving to the Duchy, the o ing to ornwall’ ta will e your first port of call, with details on how to go about receiving your quote, along with a steady stream of stellar reviews. One such review commends the “fantastic service from start to finish , while another details how ike and co. were able to “accommodate our move at ery short notice and e plains that they were professional and e cient from the moment we had contact with them . Moving home is, without doubt, one of life’s most stressful experiences, not least because you’ll often need somewhere to store your entire family’s belongings between homes. While this may seem like a logistical nightmare, you’ll soon see – by clicking through to the ‘Storage’ page of the website – that the team can take care of that for you too! This can be based on either a long- or shortterm basis; the team will load your furniture and goods into an empty container at your home, before storing it at their facilities where they use the most up-to-date security systems, smoke detectors and CCTV. For anyone thinking of moving overseas, you’ll no doubt be feeling the pressure of what is, unquestionably, a very daunting task. But fear not; simply click on the ‘Overseas Removals’ tab and allow the page to guide you through the process. And it doesn’t matter whether you’re moving a single item, or the entire contents of your home, because M.J. Christophers & Son have a network of agents around the world who work to their same exacting standards. This means they can arrange all removal documentation and offer full liability cover, while at the same time undertaking quality export packing by professionally trained staff, ensuring your items are well protected during their journey. Wherever you’re moving, and whatever you’re taking with you, one of the biggest tasks is almost always packing. To help take the sting out of this task, M.J. TRANSCENDENCE Transcending recent constraints, artist Steve Slimm launches his timely new book: Beyond the Reach of the City.

RIGHT Steve with his newly launched artbook BELOW Two of Steve's creations – Alive at Gwithian and Alone in this Immensity

aving endured an extended period of unprecedented isolation and uncertainty, most of us are now sensing the light relief of being out and about again, doing the things we lo e. econnecting with in the flesh’ art is certainly close to the heart of many and the annual Cornwall Open Studio event provides the ideal opportunity. This year, Steve Slimm is opening his studio for the first time since 2011, from 29th August to 6th September. hat’s more, he is especially e cited to e launching his brand new artbook: Beyond the Reach of the City – We Have Dreamed of a Place. The publication comes in response to the inordinate interest in his series of calendars, in collaboration with us here at Cornwall Living, featuring transcendent artwork alongside sensitive snippets of verse. One client expressed her appreciation this way: “My daughter gave me your calendar for Christmas and it truly touches me. Your paintings are how my soul feels. Never has an artist’s work mo ed me in such a way. t brings tears to my eyes, very good ones . . . Thank you for your beautiful contribution to this world. You make me smile.” The 40-page hardback book combines stunning images with some poignantly profound poetic text, creating a hauntingly beautiful experience to lift the spirit out of any dregs of despondency. Steve will be personally signing all copies purchased during the Open Studios event. “This place wants to hold me here, disempowered – as if all power lies in the past, therefore now unattainable.” This uote from te e’s poem, his lace’, so aptly describes how many of us have felt at times during the recent lockdown. His life’s work o er the past two decades has been very much about using trauma to inspire transformation, mastery and positive change. His personal life during those years contained much grist to the mill of adversity, including the passing of a life partner in 2016. But the light of transcendence is ultimately never far behind in any of his work – whether expressed through paint, music or verse.

his year sees a large area of te e’s ram ling rustic studio near raa ands devoted to an inspiring multi-sensory experience: Transcending the Constraints of Reality. Showcasing his most transcendent recent original artwork, together with soundscape improvisations and elevating poetry, the emphasis will be squarely on the meditative quality that tends to have eluded most of us of late, making it an opportunity to reconnect with life through a unique spiritual approach to the ancient land of ornwall. t’s sure to e an unforgettable experience.

ou’ll find this distinct jewellery shop at the heart of the bustling harbour town of Porthleven, on Cornwall’s south coast. With its waterfront position, a visit to the shop is such a pleasure. Recently refurbished, the shelves gleam with new jewels, gems and watches and you’ll be warmly welcomed by owners Clair and Paul. On a recent visit we were stunned by their gorgeous selection of pearl jewellery. Known as the ‘queen of gems’, pearls have been coveted for centuries and unlike gemstones are formed from a natural, living organism. It’s strange to think that something so beautiful could be grown from an irritant that becomes accidentally lodged in an oyster’s soft inner body. Today, natural pearls are a rarity but cultivated pearls are every bit as beautiful and as a piece of jewellery, is something that can be handed down for generations to come. Clair and Paul showcase a selection of both traditional and contemporary pearl jewellery, so there is something for everyone’s taste. However, if pearls are not to yours, then there are so many other stunning pieces to choose from. Whether it’s silver or gold, diamond or gemstone, wedding, engagement or anniversary, every carefully selected piece of jewellery, personally curated by Clair and Paul, will take your breath away. Paul also takes bespoke jewellery commissions, with a wide variety of stones to choose from. And gentlemen, do not despair; Porthleven Jewellery has just introduced a new make of watch to their horological collection. Iron Annie, named after the most famous aeroplane of the great German inventor Hugo Junkers, carry the

same robustness, reliability, technical innovation, and striking, high-quality design as their legendary role model. They carry a sophisticated, distinctive design and are made with precision automatic and quartz movements. Along with another stocked make, Zeppelin, these timepieces are made by highly skilled German watchmakers in a small factory near Munich. All are beautiful, and available at prices that you’ll be pleasantly surprised by. Take our advice, don’t make Porthleven Jewellery a happenstance visit. This is a destination jewellery boutique that deserves to have its own date in your diary.

ustin Duance and his team cast precious metals in beach sand to create completely unique pieces of unisex jewellery. his techni ue, de eloped y Justin some 10 years ago, results in beautifully organic pieces, reminiscent of lost treasures found on the sea ed. he each sand not only creates the texture you see on the rings, but tiny grains are captured in the metal, so you can take a piece of your favourite beach with you everywhere you go. Each ring is made bespoke to order and can e personalised. he team egin y making a ring from wa to the customer’s specifications this wax is then pressed into the mould containing the beach sand of the customer’s choice. Finally, molten gold or silver is poured into the prepared sand mould. “Every ring comes out differently, we don’t know how the ring will look until we brush away the remains of sand and begin cleaning it up. We couldn’t make two identical rings if we tried,” explains Justin. And there’s something quite special about knowing that no two sand-cast rings are the same. Justin is inspired by the sentimental attachment people ha e to their jewellery.

“It’s often well-loved and valuable to its owner even if it came from a market stall on holiday. It’s the memories that make it special. What’s really nice is when people send us their own gold, such as a great grandma’s wedding ring, as it already means something personal to them.” t first glance much of the jewellery looks quite classic, but when you look closely you start to see the subtle texture from the sand and you realise there is just so much more to them than originally meets the eye. Customers send the team beach sand from all over the world or you can pick one from the extensive list on their website. Justin Duance use 100% recycled precious metals and all the gemstones and diamonds are ethically sourced, however, customers are also welcome to use their own heirloom gold and stones. Workshop visits are available by appointment, so get in touch now to create your own piece of treasure.

SAVING OUR

Open once again with safety measures in place, we find out what lockdown was like for the Cornish Seal Sanctuary.

 MAIN Meet the residents

T

he past few months have, without doubt, been tough, not least for the team at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary. As a charity that relies on revenue from guests in order to fund its vital work, being closed for three months, as you might expect, was extremely worrying. Fortunately, the support the sanctuary has received from the public has been overwhelming, and through its Just Giving campaign, ‘Seal Appeal’, members of the public were able to donate funds, keeping the sanctuary and its team going and allowing them to continue providing their important work. Of course, the Seal Sanctuary wasn’t the only charity affected by the recent lockdown. So it came as a huge surprise when local celebrity and ocean lover, Lucie Rose Donlan, used her impressive social media following to help spread awareness of the sanctuary’s cause, not only helping to raise awareness, but vital funds, too.

Lucy Rose Donlan has been named as a Cornish Seal Sanctuary Ambassador

Lucie, who is a professional model and free surfer based in Newquay, is also recognisable from the UK hit reality TV show, Love Island. Her passion for the ocean and love for wildlife and animals really resonated with the sanctuary, and her support for the team’s work during their time of need was, quite frankly, invaluable. “I am so honoured,” says Lucie, “to have been made an Ambassador for this much loved sanctuary that not only does amazing work, but is also a fun and exciting attraction full of educational facts and information. Myself and my family enjoyed a private tour around the sanctuary recently and we were very impressed with what we saw.” Lucie continues: “I want to say a huge thank you to all the friendly and informative staff who made our day not only memorable but also educational. I’m so proud of attractions such as this in Cornwall, just knowing that people care deeply about the welfare and rehabilitation of these beautiful creatures. It’s so important to keep these sanctuaries fully operational; I’m passionate about being chosen as an Ambassador and hope to be

able to work closely with them so that they can continue to work their magic for the rescued and injured seals.” Thrilled to have welcomed Lucie to the family, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary team have since been given to go-ahead from the government to once again open their doors to the public and welcome guests back onto the 42-acre site. That said, they’re keen to ensure that everyone can visit and feel safe during their stay, which is why they’ve put in place a comprehensive set of safety measures. These include a full Covid-19 risk assessment, capacity restrictions to ensure adherence to social distancing, and signs reminding guests of the government's social distancing guidelines, posted throughout the site. There is also an enhanced cleaning regime in place, hand sanitiser stations have been installed around the sanctuary, and protective equipment has been installed to keep staff and visitors safe. Add to this regular temperature checks and staff PPE, plus additional staff training, and the Cornish Seal Sanctuary is safely primed, ready to welcome us back! Home to an array of rescued marine animals who require expert care, now that the sanctuary is once again open, why not pay a visit and say hello to the residents? You’ll hear the amazing rescue stories and learn about how the team rehabilitates and releases more than 70 seal pups each season, and as you wander around the sanctuary’s open spaces, you’ll be spellbound by the views across the beautiful Helford river. If you and your family have made the post-lockdown resolution to spend more time in the great outdoors, we can’t think of anywhere better to start than at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary.

Indeed, as the Duchy’s shops, restaurants and other businesses slowly begin to emerge from lockdown, many seem to e re finding their feet. Not so at Porthleven’s Amélie. Restaurant owner, am he eld unstan, has een planning this since late last year. That’s not to say that she had the foresight to predict the recent lockdown, but for Sam and her team at least, a lockdown of sorts was forced upon them months ahead of everybody else, when a kitchen fire in cto er last year caused extensive damage to the restaurant. ince the fire, am tells us that uilders have been hard at work transforming the restaurant, working to combine casual dining spaces with an informal, music-led bar area. “We were planning some changes to how the restaurant was going to run even before the Covid-19 restrictions. The most important elements for us are the atmosphere and the food, not numbers.” If you want to call that foresight, so be it. We prefer to think of it as attention to detail. Sam has listened, and responded, to the

Jean-Philippe Baudey

IMPORTANCE OF

wants of her guests, and the result is set to be staggering. Renowned for its Mediterranean inspired cuisine, the Amélie menu continues to major in locally caught fish and seafood. Dishes such as crab claws, fritto misto and whole aked fish take centre stage, alongside favourites that include Cornish mussels. There will also be a keen focus on sharing plates as the Amélie doors are once again thrown open, with pizzette, salt and pepper squid, and crevettes being served in a choice of sizes, or as taster boards. “We’re a family business,” says Sam, “and I want everyone to feel welcome. I love the Mediterranean, Moroccan feel of the [new] design and it really helps to achieve the chilled-out vibe I was aiming for.” What’s more, at a time when the provenance of our food, and that of buying local, have never een more important, am finishes y telling us that that the most important elements for her and the team are “the atmosphere and the food. Not numbers.”

A TOAST TO

CORNWALL Enjoying the taste of locally made and globally loved gins and rums from Cornish Rock Gin.

T  ABOVE George, Angie and their dog, Blue RIGHT A delicious variety of Cornish gins

he distillers at Cornish Rock Gin like to say that there’s more than just a little taste of Cornwall in each pour. They believe that if you close your eyes and take a sip, you will be transported to Rock beach, even if only for a second. The magic that is Cornish Rock Gin, began in Cornwall when owners Angie and George were out walking their dog, Blue, on the north Cornish coast. They had an idea to distil gin by hand in small batches, using natural spring water from their own deep water source, adding fragrant botanicals and fresh citrus fruits. They set up a distillery in a beautiful wooded valley in their beloved Cornwall and the gin is distilled here to this day. hat egan with a single, first creation of Original Cornish Rock Gin, has blossomed into a fla ourful range the tangy range Sunset, the dry peppery and smooth Cornish old, the flower and grain infused lue ngel, and the champagne grape fla oured Pink Cornish Rock Gin – all are made in the affectionately named Bonanza Boy still. The range has been joined by a new addition – rum – and the Rock distillery now produces two delicious varieties. A spicy caramel tasting piced um with anilla, orange and cinnamon notes, and a White Espresso Rum, made with coffee beans grown y their own nephew and flown directly from Kenya. Because even when the company goes international, they still keep it in the family. Cornish Rock Gin isn’t just made using Cornish spring water, fresh fruits, and botanicals, it’s made by hand, crafted by a team of local artisans. Before it gets to you,

ornish ock in’s first port of call is the people it knows, loves and cares about. All of their gins and rums are locally made, locally tasted, and meticulously tested, before being hand bottled and receiving their stamp of approval. Ensuring by the time it gets to you, it’s as close to perfect as a drink can get. So, grab a glass, pour yourself a measure, close your eyes, and see you on Rock beach.

Exciting times ahead for the team at The Little Gin Shack!

EXPERIENCE

DISCOVER MORE If you’re hoping to make the most of the summer weather by enjoying a socially distanced G&T in the sun, we have to recommend The Little Gin Shack’s very own house gin. A smooth, London dry type gin with a subtle citrus note, it’s reminiscent of balmy summer afternoons by the sea.

nown for its unbelievable range of artisan gins, including more than 40 that are distilled right here in the Duchy, The Little Gin Shack is an emporium of Cornish drinks, including Cornish vodka and rum, soft drinks, local Cornish ale and pilsner, and of course, gin. When we ask Neil and Leisha what inspired them to open their very own ‘gin-porium’, they tell us: “Whilst we have a good selection of gins created in our beautiful home county of Cornwall, we felt it important to include some of the very best from further afield. ll gins are a aila le to order online, but Neil says: “What we really enjoy is when people come and see us for a chat, a gin tasting, or even to create their ery own fla our sensation Of course, the recent lockdown has come with its challenges, and in line with government guidelines, the team are currently unable to offer the full Gin Shack service. But the pandemic has also presented a number of opportunities. hen we closed the doors on arch th, Leisha explains, “we genuinely feared for the business and whether we’d be able to come back from this. However, due to the catalogue of ‘Perfect Serve’ videos we had been accumulating on Instagram, and the

incredible response on our website for orders, we have managed to stay afloat This means that Neil, Leisha and the team are now once again offering the inside scoop on all things gin, recommending gins from around the world that promise to perfectly match your taste. Even if the bottle you’re after isn’t in stock, they’re more than happy to order it in for you. nd as if that isn t enough, they’re also ensuring that Cornwall is topped up with the perfect tipple, sharing video recipes of their favourite gins to ensure their followers get the absolute best out of them. Interested? If so, don’t just take our word for it e sure to isit the ittle in hack’s online shop and explore the eclectic mix of collections, including worldwide gins, those from Cornwall and the wider south west, as well as a host of other spirits and ‘gin-spiring’ gifts – the perfect post-lockdown tonic.

or the Bier Huis Grand Café it’s been a case of hitting the ground running after lockdown. Although booking isn’t essential the team would advise doing so as they are filling up pretty uickly nd it’s no wonder. With more new beers being added to their already huge collection of 72 bottles and six draught beers, along with changing guest beers, most of which are vegan friendly and some gluten free, this is definitely a place to wet your whistle. heir uirky wak glass shoe deposit’ remains as popular as e er. ustomers use a lo ster pot to hoist one of their shoes to the ceiling, which is only returned on return of your glass. You can even take away beers and soft drinks – draught eer can e purchased in one, two and four pint carry outs so you can e perience the taste of elgium from the comfort of your own sofa or garden. But it’s not all about the beer. Chef, John Lane has joined and with his new kitchen team is creating some fantastic food, all day. aily specials are flying out and with a new menu launching soon, that will include more vegan choices, there will certainly be some exciting dishes to try – alongside some old favourites, of course.

his September, the Cornwall Air Ambulance Runway Runaround returns, but not as you know it. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year the charity is asking participants to take part in the race wherever they are, to raise ital funds to keep the helicopter flying. Over the weekend of 26th and 27th September, the charity is inviting entrants to walk, run or jog a 10km or 5km route of their choice. Paul Maskell, Trainee Critical Care Paramedic with Cornwall Air Ambulance and Team GB athlete, will be taking part in the challenge. He tells us: “Unfortunately we can’t hold the Runway Runaround as a mass participation event due to social distancing, so we have to do things a bit differently. By having a virtual race over a weekend, it is a really good opportunity for everyone at home to get involved with their families and complete the challenge in their own way. You can do it all in one go or bit-by-bit. You can run on the coast path, in your garden or on the road – whatever suits you. “By entering you will be helping to raise money to keep our amazing new air ambulance flying and sa ing li es across ornwall.

Registration is just £10 per adult and £5 for children, and the charity asks for a minimum fundraising donation of £10. All participants will receive a medal and certificate on completion of their challenge. To sign up for the Runway Runaround challenge and be part of a team of virtual lifesavers, visit www. cornwallairambulancetrust.org/runwayrunaround-2020/ and register now!
