e’re back in print! After a three-month hiatus, we couldn’t be more excited to be back to publishing our beloved maga ine. Before guide you through the coming pages, first wanted to say a big thank you to all those who have supported us over the last three fallow months – together with our wonderful clients, suppliers, team and colleagues, we have all been waiting with baited breath for the moment when we could press the print button again… …and the time is now! In celebration of our wonderful county, and all those doggies who’ve been at our sides during lockdown, this month’s cover feature takes us to some of our favourite places, as well as discovering a few hidden gems, all that you can enjoy safely this summer with your dog. I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that time spent at home has inspired me to revamp and rejuvenate both inside and out, so if you’re in need of some inspiration, then we have plenty (from page 34)! With European travel still an uncertainty, now is the time to plan your perfect Cornish staycation. This issue we showcase a host of incredible accommodation across the county, from luxury coastal retreats to cosmopolitan city escapes (from page 45), along with some great independent venues in which to eat and shop. And finally, ’ve read with concern that Cornish charities are loo ing at suffering some large fundraising losses due to the pandemic find out how you can support the Cornwall Air Ambulance (page 76) and Cornwall Hospice Care (page 98) during this time. Stay safe and happy reading!

Access all areas Do you have a large area of garden or a smallholding where access is hard and are struggling to keep up with its maintenance? Dan Higginson, of Higginson Maintenance ervices, is a specialist in di cult access land maintenance. With many years’ experience, including a career as a Royal Navy Engineer, Dan has the ability to safely maintain these hard-to-reach, and sometimes dangerous, areas of land on properties or smallholdings that other gardeners may not be able to. With the use of a specialist remote control, Ransomes Spider Steep Slope Mower (pictured above), combined with rope restraint techniques, Dan is able to strim grass on steep slopes and control weeds as well as mowing and topping.
Dan also provides a sitemilling service. This is where he can access trees that have fallen in awkard places, with the added benefit that he can mill the timber in-situ, into either plan s or logs for firewood. Not only does this solve the problem of the fallen tree, it also provides the customer with valuable lumber. Covering both Cornwall and Devon, Dan’s expert knowledge, experience and qualifications mean that while he’s doing all the hard work, you can rest easy and enjoy the fruits of his labour, all at an affordable price. Dan enjoys challenges, finding solutions and as a smallholder specialist, you are in safe hands no matter how large your garden. For more information call 07752425369 or email higms@yahoo.com

Bluebirds fly high together!
Keep calm and eat Cornish
at Boscastle Farm Shop At times like these, we really need to step up and be there for each other, to make people smile and show strength when others may be feeling anxious about the world. And the Bluebird Care team has done just that, by paying extra visits to show clients they’re not alone dropping off groceries for those unable to leave their homes sending cards to show they’re in their thoughts and hiding their own worries to provide comfort for others. uch sel essness can ta e its toll, however, and although they can’t express support for colleagues with a hug, the Bluebird Care professionals have nonetheless found ways to help one another through the day – messaging positive words, covering shifts when someone’s children can’t attend
school, even recording funny videos to brighten the mood. They’ve also delivered cups of ‘positive tea’, with thank you cards and gift bags full of treats to help each other unwind after a long day. What’s more, knowing that it’s not always easy to talk about how you’re feeling, Bluebird Care even set up a poetry competition – a fantastic outlet for the team of carers to voice their feelings and anxieties. t’s ama ing how strong a team can be sometimes, it’s the support of being ‘in it together’ that makes all the difference – allowing everyone to keep on achieving and ying high together. As Jackie and the team at Boscastle Farm Shop begin returning to normal, they’re delighted to announce that they are now back to their pre-lockdown opening hours! Alternatively, Jackie and the team offer a takeaway service from the café (open until 4pm), and they’ve even expanded their outdoor area – perfect for a socially distanced picnic and a wonderful spot from which to watch the world go by. Add to all of this the retention of their popular delivery service (free to the local area!), and Boscastle Farm Shop becomes a must for anyone hoping to make the most of foodie Cornwall! Make the most of boating this summer!
Could zinc be the answer to
PT Creative
your roofing problem?
The team at Falmouth Haven are working hard to ensure that you can enjoy the best of boating safely this season. As boats are allowed back on the water new safety measures have been put in place at their facilities in the heart of Falmouth. Social distancing measures have been applied to the marina, and onshore facilities will have restricted use with regular cleaning. The slipway has a new ‘book to launch’ system too, enabling customers to launch their small craft without the worry of delays or crowding. Falmouth Haven is also offering the opportunity to book one of their much sought-after Swinging Moorings, for various sizes of boats, to use this season.
There would normally be a wait for these prime mooring locations, but with fewer boats being launched this year you can book one today and simply pay pro-rota. This is a great opportunity to try one out and secure a place for your boat in 2021. Why not spend time on the water this summer and enjoy blissful social isolation with all of the peace and tranquillity that the Cornish coast has to offer. For more information or to apply for a Swinging Mooring, visit the website or call the Falmouth Haven team. For more information call 01326 310990 or visit www.falmouthhaven.co.uk
We hear from Cornwall inc oofing Director, Ross Bland, who explains the benefits of choosing inc roofing for your home. He tells us: “As well as providing a contemporary finish, which loo s great both with new builds and older buildings, inc roofing also lasts between 80 and 100 years – as opposed to 50 years with usual concrete or tile roofs.” Few materials are as dynamically useful as zinc and it’s also a more environmentally friendly and natural product. Ross continues: “We work with architects, builders and clients all over Cornwall, bringing a much-desired creative approach with unique roofing and cladding that’s visually pleasing with an architectural finish. So, if you’re after a long-lasting and lu urious roofing solution, be sure to get in touch and discover for yourself the many benefits of inc roofing. Despite the current pandemic, Amélie continues to make good on its pre-lockdown plans. or the Greeks and Romans, ‘dog days’ referred to the period when the dog star Sirius appeared to rise just before the sun, in late July. We now use this term in a more general sense, referring to the heady time between early July and early September, when the hot sultry weather of summer usually occurs in the northern hemisphere. So, with the ‘dog days’ of summer upon us it seemed only fitting to discover how best to enjoy or wonderful county with man’s best friend. But where to begin? Cornwall has so many beautiful places to enjoy with your canine companion, the choices are endless... I decided to enlist the help of some experts to unlock some lesser-known gems as well as revisiting old favourites – and all while keeping you and your dog safe and sound. Hattie Day and her loyal hounds are the brains (and the bark!) behind pawsandtors. com, a website dedicated to ‘helping every dog live a life of adventure’. Hattie is an outdoor dog and lifestyle photographer who works with dog businesses across the UK and Europe, and along with her working cocker spaniels, Woody and Hen, she loves spending time outdoors, be that on cliff walks, long distance hikes, or even paddle boarding. Hattie’s hidden gems have something for everyone to enjoy…
For chasing sunsets: Godrevy Heritage Coast
Mexico Towans boasts endless sand for dogs to enjoy, while you soak in the panoramic views of St. Ives. You may have to scramble through the dunes at high tide, as the beach gets cut off from Gwithian. Head up the coast path in search of seals from the cliffs, just past Godrevy Lighthouse.
é ABOVE
Hattie, Woody and Hen discovering the magical Golitha Falls
For days out with the family: West Pentire
West Pentire is a great introduction to the Cornish coast path. The path is relatively at, with plenty of beaches to explore. Hire a SUP at Crantock and have a go at paddling up the Gannel. Or head to the cliffs at Polly Joke in early summer to watch the spectacular sea of red poppies blowing in the wind.
For beachcombers: Dollar Cove
A quiet cove shrouded in stories of shipwrecks. The Spanish ship San Salvador sank here in 1669 and her cargo of silver dollar coins continues to wash up on the beach. Continue along the coast path, past Poldhu Cove, where you can grab a coffee or a light lunch at the beach caf before heading up the hill to marvel at the Marconi monument.
An enchanting forest: Golitha Falls
Follow the tumbling Fowey river as it winds through Draynes woodland on the southern tip of Bodmin Moor. The path is uneven and rocky, so wear trainers or boots and mind how you go. Look out for deer drinking from the river and woodpeckers chipping away at the ancient oaks.
For a city escape: Idless Woods
A hidden gem on the outskirts of Truro. One of six Forestry England managed sites in Cornwall, boasting well-maintained and relatively at paths. There’s a caf in the free car park too and plenty of picturesque picnic spots throughout the woods.

DID YOU KNOW? Some of the dog restrictions on Cornish beaches were relaxed during lockdown, but many are now being reinstated from the beginning of July. You can find all the latest updates on which beaches are dog-friendly, and when, at cornwall.gov.uk
f you have a young family, and find that long walks are tricky, then a visit to one of Cornwall’s dog-friendly attractions is sure to keep everyone happy. The Lost Gardens of Heligan (heligan.com) has now reopened and is ready to welcome you and your dog. There are miles of pathways, woodlands and farmland to explore on the 200-acre site, with new and exciting things to see at every turn. Or why not take a trip to The Cornish Seal Sanctuary (sealsanctuary.sealifetrust.org), where dogs on leads are welcomed with open ippers As well as being able to watch the seals, penguins and sea lions at play, there are also 42 acres of land and woodland to explore, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Helford river. There is also a plethora of National Trust sites (nationaltrust.org.uk) across Cornwall that have re-opened and are dog-friendly. From the sheltered gardens of Trelissick and Trengwainton, to the rugged beauty of Cape Cornwall and Godrevy and across to the sailing waters off St Anthony Head and Fowey, there is a walk and a view to suit every taste. As with most Cornish attractions postlockdown, visits must be booked in advance, so if you are planning a trip to any of these places, please visit the appropriate websites to reserve your slot. As any dog owner knows, it’s imperative while out and about with your dog that you are able to keep your pooch safe. Luckily, vet Andy Cornelius of kernowvetgroup.com was on-hand to give me some safety advice, especially as we will now be taking our canine companions out in a ‘new normal’. He suggests that the best way to obey social distancing when out with your dog is by avoiding crowded areas and peak times. If you can’t avoid going out when it might be busy, think about exploring areas closer to
home – it can be fun, and there are a myriad of footpaths and bridleways criss-crossing Cornwall just waiting to be discovered. Invest in a good Ordnance Map of your local area and get exploring. During these times, Andy also advises that keeping your dog under control and on a short lead is now more important than ever when around other people and animals. Post-lockdown, your dog may not be as used to seeing others as they were before. And remember, it’s summer now! Your dog can get very hot, very quickly, even on short walks and for short periods in cars. Take a plentiful supply of fresh water with you as the usual toilets and caf s may still not be open to refill. And finally, Andy adds that it’s worth remembering that your dog’s vaccines might have lapsed during lockdown. Make sure the vaccinations are brought up to date, especially if you have a new puppy, and be sure to use effective parasite control. Ticks and lungworm are ris s as well as eas and intestinal worms. With so much stunning coastline to enjoy, taking your dog with you to the beach can be fun for the whole family. However, whilst the RNLI lifeguards are on-hand to look after your water safety, it’s every dog owner’s responsibility to make sure their pup is safe too. The experts at penmellynvet.co.uk were able to give me some great tips on keeping safe on the sand and in the sea. Reiterating Adam’s advice, they warn to be careful on warm and humid days. Dogs can’t sweat, and so their main form of heat loss is by panting, which is not effective when it's humid outside. I was shocked to hear that when it's

ê BELOW Remember to keep our vet's advice in mind on your coastal canine adventures
humid, even if the temperature's below 25 degrees, a dog can still suffer from heat stroke, so always avoid walking them in the middle of the day. Keep your eyes peeled for palm oil on beaches – a white substance with a smell of petroleum – that if ingested can cause obstruction in the gut and/or cause a pancreatitis. Dogs can also swallow too much sand whilst playing on the beach, which can cause a build-up to occur in the stomach and intestines and act as a blockage or irritant, and drinking water from the sea, scavenging and a change of diet (different dog food/extra treats/human food titbits) can all wreak havoc with your dog's digestion. Dogs love nothing more than having a good sniff around and exploring when out walking, but it’s worth noting that as the days get warmer, Cornwall’s adders are also venturing out to bask in the sunshine. If your dog is bitten by an adder, or becomes suddenly in pain after a walk, seek veterinary advice as soon as possible. Also, running across rocks on the beach is an easy way for your dog to tear a claw. This is a minor but very painful injury when it exposes the quick. Keeping your dog's claws trimmed will reduce the risk of this happening. And finally, enmellyn et roup also suggest eeping even the best-behaved dogs on a lead if you're enjoying a coastal walk near cliffs, having seen far too many injuries and deaths from dogs taking a tumble. So, wherever you choose to explore in Cornwall this summer with your dog, enjoy and stay safe!

LIFE BY THE SEA An exclusive development at the heart of the Cornish riviera, exclusively for those over 55. ABOVE é Designed to capitalise on that gorgeous ocean vista
S
ituated above a secluded beach overlooking St Austell Bay and near the picturesque village of Charlestown, The Courtyard at Duporth is a unique collection of 38, two and three-bedroom homes by Acorn Property Group's Devon and Cornwall region, Acorn Blue. Centred around a landscaped courtyard and a Grade II listed clock tower, The Courtyard is part of Acorn Blue’s Lifetime Living Collection, designed and built exclusively for those over 55. Formerly the Rashleigh Estate and Manor, you’ll find uporth on the Cornish coast, south of St Austell. In the 1930s Duporth was opened to the public as a popular seaside holiday resort and apart from a few years in the Second World War – when it was requisitioned by the War ce – it continued to entertain and charm visitors, with its peaceful secluded coastal surroundings, until the end of the century. Acorn Blue’s design team’s remit was to create a community of buildings and courtyards that were rooted in heritage, nature and the beauty of their surroundings. Architects Stride Treglown designed a range of buildings and spaces all telling their own story, with a variety of character to suit differing needs and tastes. The common feature is a consistent attention to detail and
quality, always making the most of light, space, outlook and nature. At the heart of the development is the clock tower, enhanced by its courtyard garden setting with native ower species and tranquil places to sit and soak up the Cornish sun. Around this are the old Manor Farm buildings which have been updated to provide comfortable homes whilst retaining the character and layers of history in the stonework and exposed trusses. Stepping down through the development you’ll find a collection of new houses and apartments with generous south and east facing balconies overlooking the bay. Nature threads its way throughout the site, from the bee and bat-friendly planting of the central courtyard to the grass roofs of the Bay View houses that nestle below, providing a transition to the site’s private woodland. All of the bungalows, apartments and houses have been designed to balance comfort, privacy, light and ow of space, whilst embracing the glorious ocean vista.

imon Breckon, who owns Kernow Fires, explains: “As a business we were in a fortunate position here in Cornwall. We have used lockdown to take stock of our position in the market, our offering and our wor ing systems, and figure out how we could offer more to our clients. It is rare to have time like this to really focus on your business.” “We have slowly brought the team back as regulations have allowed,” he continues, “and we are nearly back to full strength. We have introduced our own ‘Respect and Protect’ policy, which includes an appointment system to the showrooms to ensure social distancing. This is working well along with remote FaceTime and Zoom surveys. We are embracing a new realm of improved customer contact that will reduce our driven miles and carbon footprint.” This system, Simon elaborates, has to combine with social distancing rules. This means less staff being physically present, while appointments ensure that the right knowledgeable person is always available for your visit. The introduction of this new Respect and Protect policy has enabled all staff and visitors to return and feel safe, with a clear understanding of procedures and additional safety requirements. So what can you expect from Kernow Fires now that Cornwall is starting to return to normal? The launch of the team’s Summer Collection, which includes Big Green Egg, barbeques and B-Bags – everything you need for enjoying eating and relaxing at home this summer – has already been met with huge enthusiasm. The collection is tailored to suit our county – perfect for us Cornish folk who may still be spending a bit more time eating at home over the summer or enjoying barbeques on the beach, as well as holiday home and Airbnb owners who wish to offer their guests relaxed outside dining.
All products can be viewed online on the Kernow Fires website, where you can also catch up on their latest news and offers. The Kernow Fires showroom hosts an expansive display of woodburners from the top UK and Europe brands, alongside the largest Everhot showroom in the south west. Appointments can be made for showroom visits and private Everhot Demonstrations; the showroom in Wadebridge is currently open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, and on Saturday by appointment. Redruth is also open by appointment. Call 01208 812527 to book or for more information.

or Cornwall-based business, Oltco, tackling plastic waste has always been at the forefront, and never more so than now as millions of people around the world are celebrating Plastic Free July. Oltco's innovative product, Recycle Bound, is an environmentally friendly, resin-bound surface solution that can be used for driveways, pathways and patios. To date, Recycle Bound has already recycled over 40 million plastic straws since launching in 2019! The product has been hugely popular with residential and commercial customers alike, especially those in the hospitality and tourism sectors. Oltco is proud to be partnering with leading local businesses so that they can also reap the eco-benefits of the product. Using the equivalent of 450,000 plastic straws, Recycle Bound has been used to create 150 square metres of pathways at Carbis Bay Hotel near St Ives. Dan Allister, Senior Marketing and Development Manager, was delighted with the end result: "The pathway looks fantastic and to know we are making a difference to the environment is an added benefit. We have used Oltco previously for our resin solutions and we will continue to recommend them due to their professionalism and true craftsmanship. We hope more clients and customers will consider using Recycle Bound." The equivalent of more than three million plastic straws were also used to upgrade and replace the paths and pool surround at Trevornick Holiday Park near Newquay. General Manager, Adam Tribe, is always loo ing to find solutions that will benefit the environment and so Recycle Bound made perfect sense, and at the end of its life it can be taken up and reused for future projects! Both sites have benefitted from a product that not
only looks good and is incredibly durable, but one that is also kind to the planet and sustainable. Recycle Bound was developed to be even stronger than other resin solutions and so it’s the perfect solution for high-footfall areas. Using the equivalent of 255,000 plastic straws, Oltco has most recently partnered with the Eden Project to lay Recycle Bound surfaces throughout its biomes. The surface is also DDA compliant so it’s ideal for disability access. Not only that, but it reduces weeds, is easy to clean, requires very low maintenance and comes with a 20 year guarantee.

uring these unprecedented times we have been hearing many tales of triumph over adversity, and HBH Woolacotts is certainly one of them. From its inception over 40 years ago, the business’ ethos has always been to provide unrivalled customer service, the best support possible, free delivery, and basic installation on most major appliances, while at the same time developing strong relationships between the HBH team and leading industry brands. We speak with Director, Chris Hemmerle, about the challenges the business has faced during the pandemic and how he has been able to maintain his company’s ethos throughout. “The lockdown and instructions to shut our stores came as a bit of a shock! While we were expecting it at some point, we hoped to have had longer than 12 hours to plan for it,” explains Chris. “At the time lockdown was announced we had over 1,000 jobs already booked for customers so, while we had to shut the doors, our first objective was to ensure we honoured them.” It was vital to Chris and his team that every customer received the goods they had ordered. Many were products such as televisions or kitchen appliances, which were going to be essential for people during the lockdown.

Adamant that they needed to maintain a service to customers that included points of contact for technical support and sales advice, as well as a delivery service, HBH Woolacotts set about charting a course that would see them through the next few months. “We felt strongly that our products and services would be essential to many people and that we needed to be there to support, regardless of the cost to the business,” says Chris. “We ultimately decided to set up three support centres in Bude, St Austell and Liskeard, with sales support staff and delivery teams working from each location. Phone lines from all branches were routed to these centres and geographically they were positioned well to ensure we could maintain a delivery service to every corner of the south west.” The level of work that was needed to implement these changes shouldn’t be underestimated and it is testament to the passion and hard work from Chris and his team that customers have not been disappointed. They implemented free nextday delivery across Devon and Cornwall to ensure their customers were not left out of pocket, regardless of value, and supported those who had purchased products via video-link or telephone to maintain contact if needed. Remote payment services were set up, as well as e tended finance to ensure customers’ payment options weren’t limited by not being able to visit their stores. Risk management was also at the forefront of
Chris’ mind, so changes were made to ensure delivery services were carried out with minimal risk. Chris is very proud of what has been achieved: “These services have been extremely well received and we’re planning on continuing all of them indefinitely to ensure that customers can shop with us in a way that best suits them.” In line with government guidance, Chris has been able to open all stores at the time of writing, but fully appreciates that the pandemic is far from over, explaining: “We need to remain alert and fully prepared to ensure that our stores are a safe place for people to shop.” Chris also wants customers to be confident that they’re still going to receive the best prices around, and so is delighted to announce that HBH Woolacotts has brought forward its summer sale to coincide with their reopening. Running from now until the end of August, Chris believes there will be some excellent deals. “Given the recent circumstances,” he continues, “we’re confident that our prices and offers are li ely to be exceptionally strong as manufacturers look to clear stock. We’re fortunate that we have plenty of storage space to make the most of any opportunities and hope to bring some really fantastic offers to our customers in the south west." “It’s going to be an interesting few months ahead,” Chris concludes, “and we’re not only ready to look after our customers; we’re also ready to react to any changes in guidelines or the environment to ensure we keep our staff, customers and communities safe.” As a Cornish, family run business, it’s clear to see that Chris and his team really are passionate about putting their communities and customers first.

REVOLUTION Working to help Cornish homeowners fight back and take control of the way they power their homes, we catch up with Neil at GreenGenUK.
F
RIGHT è Solar PV is a great way to offset higher electricity usage BELOW Air source heating eradicates the demand for expensive and harmful fuels
or years, homes in Cornwall have paid a premium for their energy simply for being where they are. With large parts of Cornwall off the gas grid, oil, LPG and direct electric systems have led to higher bills and a higher carbon footprint. Now, thanks to GreenGenUK and the renewable revolution, solar and air source heating is blazing the trail for cheaper, friendlier heat and power. Not only can homes offset their energy use through solar self-generation, but by switching to an air source heat pump, homes can completely eradicate their oil or gas use. Neil Rollinson, GreenGenUK's Sales & Marketing Manager, explains the impact renewables are having throughout Cornwall. “Until recently, there weren’t many options for Cornwall’s property owners. If you weren’t in the main towns, you almost certainly had oil or night storage for your heating, and you paid more for the privilege. “Solar PV has been around for years,” continues Neil, “and is a great way to offset higher electricity usage. Air source heating, on the other hand, provides a level playing field, by eradicating demand from harmful, expensive fuels.” We learn that, typically, a home heated by air source and powered by solar will run for less than half the cost of what an oil-heated home would. And with the government subsidising the switch via schemes such as the Renewable Heating Incentive, both solar and air-source systems promise to pay for themselves. Since opening in 2011, GreenGenUK has been responsible for helping hundreds of Cornish homeowners find sustainable ways to heat and power their homes. To see how the team can help and to join the renewable led revolution, be sure to get in touch with Neil and the team!

ho said safe was boring? St Mortiz Hotel’s brand-new dining experience, The Anti-Social Club, is already the talk of the town. Leading the way in stylish, socially distanced dining, the art deco hotel near Rock has developed the UK’s first, purpose-designed and built, socially distanced restaurant, alongside its equally socially distanced ‘Breakfasts at the Beach Huts’ option for summer 2020. The brainchild of founders Hugh and Steve Ridgway, and the St Moritz Director of Restaurants Jonathan Domé, the new summer restaurant provides an exclusive private dining experience for individuals, couples and bubble groups. Jonathan is keen to ensure that the menus not only pay tribute to the hotel’s incredible Cornish food suppliers and producers, but that the food is served in a relaxed style, helping to put diners at ease. The Anti-Social Club’s new dining concept consists of 16 private dining rooms, with a maximum of 96 covers. Combining the elements of a private member’s club, private dining rooms, a cool beach club and summer pop-up restaurants, The Anti-Social Club features multiple dining times, clear guidance and safe socially distanced operating procedures to ensure the safety of diners and staff at all times. This
unique pop-up restaurant has been specifically designed to ensure that the individual dining rooms are all accessed from outside, with the service function provided from a central atrium. All food and drink is delivered to the private dining rooms via a set of hatches, which means no one will be accidentally bumping into anyone! Demand for bookings at The Anti-Social Club has been so strong and immediate, that the hotel has also now enabled breakfasting in the sea-facing, classically cute British beach huts that come as an accompaniment to the hotel’s King Rooms. The huts, which overlook the Camel Estuary towards Steppa Point and the Atlantic beyond, are constructed and decorated in an English seaside style and are all lovingly and individually named. Sunrise, all-day lazing, sunsets and stargazing come as standard and new shelving and accessories have been added so that guests’ breakfasts can be safely delivered to the hut before they arrive.

With a kill rate of 6 – the highest kill rate on the scale used by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to assess a disinfectant’s effectiveness – X-Mist will now be used by Fixer Management to wipe down door handles, key safes and even soft furnishings, ensuring that each property has been thoroughly sanitised. The team can also use the WHO brand of manual fogging cans between changeovers, should it be deemed essential. Fixer Management is changing its practises to meet the social distancing guidelines, with cleaners happily working alone in
most circumstances. Provided with full Personal Protective Equipment and essential guidance on health and safety in the workplace, Fixer Management is making sure that every housekeeper can still carry out their duties on changeover day. Guests are also being asked to maintain the social distancing guidelines whilst on holiday and to contribute to the task at hand by doing simple things such as stripping their bed linen – small gestures that will make a huge difference to the housekeeper's cleaning structure, and which will provide them with much-needed support in the early days, when returning to work may seem a daunting prospect. Communicating with owners, agents and guests to ensure that all parties can work together in these unprecedented times, Falmouth Holiday Homes and Fixer Management are working hard so that the beautiful Cornish summer can be enjoyed by all, as Cornwall slowly returns to a new kind of normal.

ocusing on her interior design career and becoming a mother meant life initially got in the way of Cassie’s dream to create clothes suitable for female frames over 5’10”. However, after losing a close friend in early 2020, Cassie realised life was too short, so she took action and approached Outset Cornwall for support in getting her business, Tall & Beautiful Clothing Ltd, off the ground. “I already knew how good the Outset programme was from when my husband wanted to start his own business a few years ago, so I was pleased to see it was still available,” explains Cassie. Once she’d registered on the programme, Cassie was keen to get going but had to put her plans on hold as the COVID-19 pandemic forced the UK into lockdown. With the Outset team working quickly to move training sessions online, it wasn’t long before Cassie could continue accessing the training and support she needed to keep going. “Now having completed the online sessions, plus additional workshops, I’m at a point where I’ve registered my company with HMRC, and I’ve launched my website and social media to create awareness,” says Cassie. “I didn’t expect to get so far so quickly, and Outset’s support has been amazing every step of the way.” Cassie’s next challenge is to produce her garments, and despite a lack of funds initially noc ing her confidence and self-
belief, with Outset’s help, she’s devised a way to achieve her goal. “A few weeks in, I started questioning whether I could actually do this,” says Cassie. “But speaking with one of Outset’s brilliant advisors gave me a much-needed ‘lightbulb’ moment, and now I’m launching a Crowdfunder campaign to raise the money.” Featuring a host of rewards that include one of Cassie’s exclusive designs, the plan is to raise enough funds to start production of her pieces by autumn, ready for an o cial launch in spring 2021. “I wanted to build a distinctive, trusted brand that celebrates tall women and gives them confidence. Than s to utset, ’m so close to achieving that,” says Cassie. “My one piece of advice to anyone thinking about starting a business and joining Outset would be ‘do it’; I didn’t want to grow old and always wonder what if ’, and definitely wouldn’t have got this far without them.”

HELPING CORNWALL
back to work
After problem solving throughout the lockdown, we discuss the challenges of the recent pandemic with Falmouth-based company, Passmore Cleaning.
ABOVE Passmore's calendar is filling up with all manner of cleaning jobs é
H
aving just re-branded and launched a new website, Passmore Cleaning was gearing up for a busy spring season. That is, until the lockdown was announced. “They say timing is everything,” says business owner, Sharon assmore. ur newly refurbished o ces were only open for one day when, overnight, our calendar went from fully booked to just a handful of ey wor ers t was a shoc for the business and our staff, but we quickly recuperated. Most of our amazing team went on furlough, focusing instead on completing a range of online health and safety training courses.” The current pandemic has, as you might expect, put pressure on the company, particularly as cleaning itself is put under the microscope around the world. n many ways cleaners are on the front line,” explains Manager, Kate, “preventing the spread of the virus in workplaces and properties, all the while putting themselves at risk. But someone has to do it! Everyone is aware of the severity of the current pandemic, and the implications of catching the virus, which is why our staff are inundated with new method statements, adjusted cleaning schedules and . Fortunately, the team knew that cleaning would play an important role in getting people back to work, so we aligned all our ducks early on.”
As the lockdown rules relaxed, Passmore Cleaning discovered an unexpected demand from the students of Falmouth – a packing and cleaning service. Those who abandoned their rented rooms to isolate with their families, or ew bac home, were reaching the end of their tenancies, and so needed a service that packed up their belongings for storage and cleaned their room, ready for inspection. Demand has also risen sharply for deep cleaning. “The world is a little strange at the moment,” continues Sharon, “and our whole team has adapted well, taking each day as it comes.” They’ve even been helping some vulnerable people during the pandemic because, as Sharon says: “Even doing someone’s shopping goes a long way!” Ultimately, all industries rely on cleaning to meet basic health and safety standards – now more than ever. And as businesses tentatively begin to re-open around the Duchy, Passmore Cleaning’s new website is getting more and more hits by the day. The calendar is once again filling up with all manner of cleaning jobs, so, for Passmore Cleaning at least, the future is looking bright.

OF HOME
Tremaine Green Cottages has become a popular choice for the ultimate Cornish getaway, and it's really not hard to see why!
é TOP Beauitful Cornish cottages
S
urrounded by nature and acres of land, it’s easy to see why a stay at Tremaine Green Cottages has become the popular choice for the ultimate Cornish getaway. Walking through the arches and into the grounds of Tremaine Green Cottages, you instantly feel an air of peace. The period Cornish cottages set within a traditional farmyard provide escape from the outside world and all are made from mellow Cornish stone, constructed from granite and blue Delabole slate, once mined at a nearby quarry. The tranquil surroundings of Tremaine are enriched by an abundance of trees and hedgerows, which safely encapsulate the well-established, award-winning gardens. Being safely set away from main roads, the grounds are perfect for children to explore and play without the worry of tra c. There are also many different animals onsite to get chummy with, including Pygmy goats, miniature horses, and a super friendly Great Dane. If this isn't enough to keep the family entertained, there is also a tennis court if you are up for a set. Situated in the perfect location to explore south Cornwall’s enchanting coves, this stretch of coastline is protected by the National Trust and is fondly known as the ‘smugglers' coast’, steeped in tales of piracy and bootlegging from ages past. Tremaine Green’s closest cove, Lansallos, is just 2.5
miles away and was described by BBC's Coast as “the quintessential Cornish smuggler's cove”. Who knows, you might even stumble across some long-lost treasure! The neighbouring towns of Fowey and Looe are nearby, offering exceptional restaurants, bars and artisan shops to explore. After a busy day traversing south Cornwall’s secret coastal coves, shimmering waters and idyllic fishing harbours, you can loo forward to returning to the cosiness of your holiday cottage. Nothing beats watching the Cornish sunset from the patio with a glass of something chilled. However, if it’s a cool evening, you could always snuggle down in front of the comforting glow of the fire. Tremaine encourages the opportunity for families to unite together, with one, two, and three-bedroom cottages available. There’s also the option to rent multiple cottages, perfect for larger families or that special family celebration. With the ability to accommodate 45 people, all in beds, and with up to two dogs allowed per cottage, Tremaine Green Cottages provides all the magical ingredients for a truly memorable holiday.

KEEPING
n o i t i d a tr ALIVE Mel Chambers champions 13th century techniques to create stunning and utterly unique fired clay tiles.
é ABOVE Stunning new designs are the fruit of Mel's isolation in lockdown
I
n a time of great uncertainty, many small businesses have struggled to survive, but being ever the optimist and always finding a silver lining in every cloud, local Cornish artist, Mel Chambers, of Alchemy Tiles, has used the time afforded by the current pandemic wisely, to develop her work to even greater heights. Although you can normally find her at shows and exhibitions across the UK, her time in isolation in the studio has owered into stunning new colours and designs, particularly for kitchens, bathrooms and gardens, as well her new online shop. Mel combines her passion for clay, ancient techniques, philosophy and poetry with her deep ethical and sustainable business ethos to create works of enduring beauty. Each and every tile is hand carved freehand into the wet clay, before being inlaid with coloured clay created from her own unique recipes. The full process from start to finish ta es a minimum of two weeks for each piece, but due to this ancient craft, the colours and inspiring words will last eternally. As one of the only ceramicists in the UK still using this stunning 13th century technique, Mel is not only keeping this old craft alive, but taking it to new frontiers!
So, if you’re looking for something that is bespoke, unique, original and expresses just what you want from the heart, then let Alchemy Tiles create the magic you’re searching for.

t’s great to hear that so many businesses are re-opening across Cornwall, and not least that our friends at Waves Surf Art Gallery are back up and running with some exciting new images to reveal and projects to announce. We were able to catch up with the man behind the lens, i e acey, to find out how he coped with lockdown and what the future holds for his galleries in Porthleven and Falmouth. “Time out of the water during lockdown has made me really appreciate what we have on our doorstep and to find happiness in the small things,” explains Mike. “We live in the most amazing place in the world and I feel so lucky to be able to go out every day and capture these magical moments and bring them back to the galleries to share with everyone. That first jump back in the sea after lockdown was an amazing moment, it felt like I was able to breathe again.” Mike has been really busy getting new images made up for the galleries as well as working on two brand-new books. The first is a second edition of the ever-popular Cornish Waves series entitled Chasing Perfection. This stunning hardback volume
features 160 pages of Mike’s favourite images from chasing swells around Cornwall for the last five years. t is a volume that should take pride of place on any ocean-lover’s coffee table. The second is a children's book, Coral & The Cornish Heart, which is a true story centred around the now-famous Cornish Heart photograph that Mike captured the day before his daughter Coral was born. “It will feature lots of Cornish landmarks as well as some of my favourite photos,” says Mike, “with amazing illustrations created by local illustrator Hermione Mills.” Both books are published in July and are available to pre-order from the Waves Surf Art Gallery website. Mike and the team are really looking forward to welcoming people back into their galleries: “We hope you all have a great summer. Please support local businesses and keep safe!”
ABOVE Mike is thrilled to be back in the water! INSETS Each of Mike's books is well worth a read!

é ABOVE Clair and Paul have worked hard to get the shop ready!
P
Porthleven Jewellery Workshop continues to build on its reputation as one of the Duchy’s favourite jewellers
ositioned at the water’s edge in Porthleven, the Jewellery Workshop team has been busy over the last few months, putting a lot of love and care into making sure the shop is at its best when the time comes to open. And now that it has, it’s also clear that Clair, Paul and the team have also put a lot of care into ensuring that all the necessary safety measures are in place, in line with the government guidelines, so that customers can peruse the displays as comfortably and safely as possible. As well as serving customers with face masks and visors, Paul tells us: “We clean the jewellery thoroughly, and all our customers are asked to use sanitiser before and after trying.” It’s a good job too, because upon visiting you’re bound to want to try on a few of the beautiful pieces currently on offer, particularly as Clair and Paul have been busy stocking the shop with lots of new styles and designs, including a new watch brand! Named after the favourite aeroplane of famed German inventor and engineer, Hugo Junker, ‘Iron Annie’ will be replacing the store’s Junkers
range, sitting alongside the workshop’s beautiful range of Zeppelin watches. “Both are manufactured in the same small factory near Munich,” explains Paul, “and we have a lot of the new models on show, which we can’t wait to share with our customers.” Something that hasn’t changed with the current pandemic is the warm welcome you can expect as you cross the threshold. Nor has the expertise of the team, and it’s fair to say that the quality of the pieces on display continues to speak for itself. Offering second-to-none advice on all-things jewellery, and able to help you find that perfect piece – even if that means making it for you – the Jewellery Workshop, Porthleven, continues to live up to its county-wide reputation for fair prices and prompt, first-class service.

Weird Fish offers something different from the norm – a sense of fun, an eye for practicality and plenty of style and quality.
A
fter an inspiring walk along a coast path in Cornwall, Weird Fish was born with a simple mission: to produce well-made and distinctive clothes that become instant feel-good favourites. “We live for that Friday feeling every day,” explains the brand’s Managing Director, John Stockton. “Whether we’re unwinding by the coast, walking our dogs, or just catching up with friends, the weekend gives us the time to unwind and be ourselves. We believe everyday should be full of the freedom and fun that the weekend gives us.” This season, Weird Fish is embracing long summer days, eco-friendly fabrics, and the great British staycation. After successfully launching their sustainable Bamboo range in the spring, Weird Fish has just released their new Tencel collection. Tencel is a super soft, breathable and biodegradable fabric, composed from wood pulp of fastgrowing trees. Naturally hypoallergenic and responsibly sourced, this wonder material has even won a European Award for the Environment, adding to the company’s growing range of sustainable fabrics. The summer sees the gradual return to normality after a di cult start to the year for everyone, and for Weird Fish, this means shops reopening. “We are so pleased to be
able to welcome customers safely back into our stores,” says John. “We know the great British staycation is going to mean more to our shoal than ever this year, and we have some great store locations in Cornwall that will be happy to get a visit from some friendly faces this summer.” rom fish and chips on the beach, to dipping your toes in the sea, Weird Fish has a wonderfully fresh range of clothes to go with you on all your UK holiday adventures this season.

Brush STROKES
Buzzing with an energy that screams creativity and art, the High Street in Falmouth is home to an arts and crafts emporium: The Grey Lurcher.
T
hree years ago, walking the cobbled streets of Falmouth, Julie and Chris Duddle noticed a sign in a shop window that simply read 'To Rent'. With shared backgrounds in textile design and retail, an ideal opportunity had presented itself to them. The High Street appealed to them for its unique character and the numerous other small creative businesses that line the street. Surrounded by cafés, restaurants, and incredible views it certainly exudes a chilled vibe. Opening in October 2017 with a lot of hope and very little stock, The Grey Lurcher was up and running. Positively evolving over the last three years and sticking to a formula of providing gifts for you or your home, The Grey Lurcher also stocks the iconic range of paints from Annie Sloane. It was during the second year of trading when Annie Sloan, curious as to whether The Grey Lurcher would like to stock her paint, approached Julie and Chris. Julie jumped at the chance; as an artist and textile designer, it seemed the right product to sell. After training with Annie Sloan at her headquarters in Oxford, it was
go-time, and fans of Sloan soon became regular customers! The Grey Lurcher stocks everything required to up-cycle furniture, including paintbrushes, waxes and varnishes. Samples of Annie Sloan fabrics are on display, along with books and stencils. During the Covid-19 lockdown, the paint sales increased and Julie even had time to wield a brush herself, splitting her time between painting furniture at home, and renovating the house that they’d recently moved into! An avid up-cycler, Julie is a fountain of knowledge on the subject and is always happy to offer advice on colour and technique. One-to-one workshops are available, but with the amazing resources on offer at the Annie Sloan website (anniesloan.com), it is just a case of rolling up your sleeves and getting stuck in!

ith the closure of charity shops, the cancellation of community fundraising events and the loss of income from the tourism sector, lifesaving charities across Cornwall are suffering. And not least, the Cornwall Air Ambulance, that is predicting an annual loss of income of around £1.5 million. The charity says the unprecedented shortfall in income could significantly impact the service it provides across the county and so it needs your help to safeguard the future of the helicopter service amid this significant funding shortfall, due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Every year the helicopter responds to over 700 emergency calls for help and is onscene at an incident in an average of just 12 minutes. Combined with the charity’s nightly critical care car cover, the crew were tasked to a total of 1,144 missions in 2019. It costs more than £4.5 million a year to run the lifesaving charity and the £1.5 million shortfall could have consequences on the service it provides. Air perations cer, teve arvey, said “We don’t want anyone to be left behind because of the knock-on impact of this pandemic. We have a brand-new aircraft, with increased capabilities, and we want to make sure we can continue to use it to its full potential.
“The aircrew have worked hard to keep ying during the pandemic, and we have adapted our ways of working and the protective measures in the helicopter. With your help we will be able to continue to bring the level of care we currently do to as many seriously sick and injured patients as possible in the future.” Paula Martin, Chief Executive of Cornwall Air Ambulance, said Cornwall Air Ambulance is an independent charity, and although we have N paramedics in the team, the charity is not eligible for the millions of pounds raised for the N . Cornwall Air Ambulance is not immune to the effects of Coronavirus. The more people who can step in now, take action and support the lifesaving work of the charity, the greater the chances are that we can preserve the maximum service levels and reach the patients who need us most in their hour of need. Future lives depend on the support of the amazing people of Cornwall.”

OTHER SIDE As brands around Cornwall do their best to return to ‘business as usual’, we catch up with Helen Swift, owner of Archie Browns in Penzance and Truro.
I ABOVE Make the most of the team's popular refill section BELOW ê Why not try Archie Browns' new click and collect service in Penzance?
n such uncertain and, indeed, unprecedented times, the fact that Archie Browns has continued to receive support from the local community is testament to the standard of its offering. It also speaks to the importance of shopping local, and it’s fair to say that without the support of local customers, independent stores like Archie Browns simply would not have been able to keep going. For that, Helen tells us, and for all the hard work of her team, she is enormously grateful. o, what can you e pect to find currently on offer at Archie Browns? If you’re out and about making the most of the newly open high street in Penzance, Archie Browns is the perfect place to grab a takeaway lunch or smoothie. Regular readers of Cornwall Living will also know that the two stores are both hubs of health – championing sustainable lifestyle options since 1991, with an evergrowing offering of wares from the finest local growers and producers. Speaking with Helen over the phone, we learn how they currently receive veg from a local producer, locally sourced honey, and even locally ba ed apjac s If you’re looking to restock your cupboards, Archie Browns’ popular refill section has a vast selection of organic grains, nuts, seeds and similar, that the team has refined in order to minimise the footprint of your food. ou can also refill your toiletries, laundry and
household products, taking your pick from a range that’s kind to both body and conscience. This means that if you’re hoping to emerge the other side of lockdown as the champion of a more sustainable lifestyle – one that supports independent Cornish brands, growers and producers – Archie Browns has you covered. Not ones to rest on their laurels, Helen and the team continue to adapt and evolve around the current circumstances (having already implemented a delivery service especially for the lockdown) and even now, they’re working on ways to make ordering simpler for staff and customers alike, including a trial of online ordering systems. Archie Browns Penzance is offering a click and collection service for takeaway, while the Truro store is trialling an online ordering system for the shop. While the current pandemic does of course spell uncertainty, and while it has, by no stretch of the imagination, been easy for any of Cornwall’s independent brands, it’s great to see a business like Archie Browns continuing to deliver the ultimate Cornish lifestyle to their local, loyal customers.

KEEPING IT
Cornish
We catch up with Cornish Tea and Cornish Coffee owner, Duncan Bond, to see what this fast-growing brand has got brewing.
N
"
… the important thing is keeping the customers happy and consistent quality of products and service. DUNCAN
"
ot one to rest on his laurels, Duncan and his team recently invested £1.5 million into a new, state-of-the-art factory, capable of producing over a million tea bags per day. What’s more, all products are now 100% plastic free. But that’s by no means all they’ve been up to! Cornish Tea and Coffee have now put aside the land for the largest tea plantation in Europe! It will be located near their home town of Looe, deep in the Cornish countryside, and with 200 acres at their disposal and a new Tea Visitor Centre planned, it’s set to become a real asset to the business the latest in a long list of firsts’ since the company’s inception nine years ago. So where did this all begin? The family behind the business were selling tea to the hotels of Looe back in the early 1900s, and almost a century on, they continue to do so! Indeed, the Cornish Tea and Coffee brand can now be found across the globe, creating jobs and, importantly, eeping profits right here in the Duchy. As Duncan takes a break from his everhectic schedule running the many different aspects of the business, he tells us. “There are many aspects in growing a brand and a business, but the important thing is keeping the customers happy and consistent quality of products and service.” After that, he tells us: “It’s about having fun!”
He introduces us to his uncle, Harvey. “Being involved with Cornish Tea is not what I expected when I retired,” Harvey laughs, “but it’s great fun listening to the latest ideas they have. The best bit is they carry them through and succeed. It’s great for me too, as I can observe and enjoy the ride, without doing the work!” But it’s not all about tea. Duncan and co. also blend and roast their own coffee – using their very own roaster named Roy, after Duncan’s grandfather. Supplying hotels and all catering facilities with Espresso machinery, training teams in how to make incredible coffee, and backing it all by great customer service – Cornish Tea and Coffee is a brand you can put your faith in. Supplying the most discerning customers the world over, as Duncan puts it: “I am incredibly fortunate to have such a wonderful team. Our new considerable investment in the future will help us to hit our annual turnover of £30 million over the next few years.” In short, this Cornish brand is most definitely one to watch

THE scoop Ideas to help you and your pooch to make the most of Cornwall.
Canine cool
Preparing pets for new normal Over the summer months it’s important to remember that your pooch can’t tolerate the heat quite like we can. Here’s some great advice from Penmellyn Vets to make sure your dog doesn’t get too hot under the collar! While we all love a warm summer’s day, this can be a bit much for our canine companions, particularly those with a dark or thick coat, those with a short face such as pugs and bulldogs (brachycephalic breeds), large dog breeds and those with a heart or lung condition. If you choose to take your dog to the beach it’s advisable to provide some shade for them, encourage them to cool down in the sea and to take regular drinks of fresh water. With this in mind always carry plenty of water and a bowl with you. As always, the rule is to never leave your dog unattended in a car, even for a very short length of time.
While out walking, be aware of the temperature of the pavements or roads, your dogs’ paws can get badly burned on hot tarmac. After a warm walkies, why not create a shallow doggy paddling pool A simple washing up bowl filled with water can give your dog a chance to cool off their paws. Ensure you are aware of the signs that your dog might be overheating, including excessive panting, dribbling, wobbling and having trouble standing, bright red gums or general distress. If in doubt, it’s worth going inside so your dog can recover in a cool room. For more information call 01637 880307 or visit www.penmellynvet.co.uk
For pets, the gradual lifting of lockdown brings new challenges. Many of us have spent a lot of time at home and our animals will need to adjust to us not being around as much. Kernow Vet Group suggests if your pet has previously been fine when left, try leaving for short periods using a pet cam to assess their response. If you have a new pet that has never been left, introduce short periods of separation, leaving the room for a few seconds while they are settled, gradually building up the time away. You should always work at a level your pet can comfortably cope with, and using cameras to monitor progress is really helpful. If you are concerned by any aspect of your pet’s behaviour, they suggest contacting their qualified behaviourist. For more information call 01208 872254, visit www.kernowvetgroup.com or www.behaviourvet.info
Introducing your local training expert! Sometimes our favourite furry friends need a little help in the right direction, which is precisely what Ben Jordan of Bark Busters is here for! Just some of the common issues Ben can help with are aggression, anti-social behaviour, barking, destruction and recall. With almost 30 years’ experience in helping dogs to draw from, Bark Busters can help you and your hound enjoy a happy, stress-free life together. Cornwall’s dog training and behavioural therapist for Bark Busters, Ben has seen it all when it comes to
doggie behavioural issues, and it’s clear to see that he is an expert on all-things canine! With a very high success rate, doggie behavioural problems could be a thing of the past – simply give Ben a call! And if you’re thinking of getting a new puppy, planning a session with Ben is a great way of starting the way you mean to go on, so that you and your pooch can go about enjoying the great outdoors with confidence. espite the country coming to a standstill, the application season for university level courses starting in September 2020 is continuing. Whether you have been thinking about a change of direction and want to follow a career in teaching, health and fitness, engineering or social care, or want to study a more specialist subject such as cyber security, silversmithing and jewellery or archaeology, there is a course for everyone delivered on a full or part-time basis. You can enrol on one of the college’s TEF gold-rated courses by completing an application online at ucas.com – all you need is a reference and a personal statement. The college’s friendly admissions team are always available with application help and Kate from the team advises: “Just think about your UCAS application like a CV. Our admissions team are always happy to give advice and guidance over the phone, and the UCAS customer experience centre is always really helpful too.” Celebrating over 20 years of delivering higher education courses, Truro and Penwith College offers over 40 gold-rated, careerboosting, university level qualifications spanning 11 different subject areas. The college’s smaller class sizes allow for plenty of opportunity to benefit from one-to-one
support and their university level students have rated them top in Devon and Cornwall for student satisfaction, two years running. And as a matrix-accredited college, advice and support services are centred on the learner’s personal career, learning, work and life goals, including support for those with disabilities. The college has also announced it will be offering a non-means tested ‘technical bursary’ to students starting a university level STEM course in September 2020. The bursary is designed to support those who planned to enter employment or work based training but are now finding limited opportunities due to the impact of COVID-19. With specialist courses such as FdA Design Craft Maker, you can learn to build your own business. Catherine Kay decided to change direction and enrol in the FdA Silversmithing and Jewellery course after being made redundant too many times. Catherine says When finish this course, will be able to be my own boss and never be made redundant again.”

CHARITY |
ALWAYS We catch up with Cornwall Hospice Care’s Chief Executive, Paul Brinsley, who tells us how this resilient Cornish charity has navigated these most difficult of times.

there
or the Cornwall Hospice Care clinical teams, the last few months have, as you might expect, been a huge challenge. But as Paul Brinsley, the charity’s Chief Executive tells us: “I’m proud to say our key workers have kept our hospices open 24/7 throughout the current pandemic.” Indeed, the Cornish healthcare charity has continued to admit terminally ill patients in need of specialist help and support, with its 20 intensive care beds constantly full. “Sadly, for some we’ve had to provide end-of-life care,” explains Paul, “but for others, we’ve been able to stabilise their symptoms and get them back to their own homes or care homes. We’ve also been able to support our NHS colleagues by providing a service that helps take the pressure off them at such a di cult time. Helped by a government grant – sourced via Hospice UK and provided to all hospices to ensure the continued provision of their frontline services – Paul tells us: “It’s helped us survive at a time when all our shops have been closed and our fundraising activities drastically reduced because of the Covid-19 restrictions. Going forward, we’re going to need people’s help more than ever as we plan our recovery.” It’s true: Cornwall Hospice Care faces a long uphill struggle to survive, which is why Paul is appealing to all the charity’s
supporters to visit its shops when they open; to support its ongoing virtual fundraising events and to play the charity lottery. Unfortunately, the pandemic hit as Cornwall Hospice Care was beginning to celebrate its 40th anniversary. David Renwick, Volunteer Chair of Trustees explains: “It couldn’t have come at a worse time. We had to postpone our anniversary events that were planned to improve awareness of our charity and raise vital funds. We will resurrect some in 2021, more especially our record attempt at the World’s Biggest Cream Tea Party. Now," avid continues, is a time to re ect, to plan our recovery and to praise our staff and volunteers who’ve remained committed throughout this dreadful period in all our lives. I’m incredibly proud of everyone for their dedication and support.” “I can’t pretend we aren’t facing more di cult times as we start on the road to recovery,” concludes Paul, “but families in Cornwall facing terminal illnesses are relying on us and I hope we can all pull together to ensure we are always there for them.”
