ooray for spring he e enings are finally starting to draw out and the e er so slightly warming temperatures are a sure-sign that the worst of the cold months is behind us. With the promise of sunshine on the horizon, this month’s cover feature (page 22) explores some of Cornwall’s best camping and glamping breaks, perfect for those in search of an ‘away from it all’ escape, and essential for anybody hoping to reconnect with nature now that winter has thawed. This is also a time of year where many start to think about making those much-needed home improvements. That could be replacing a fence that’s blown down in one of the many recent storms, or it could be a complete interior renovation. For some, it could even be a ‘from the ground up’ self-build. Pony therapy!

Artist exhibition at Wheal Martyn Clay Works

The wonderful world of caring for people brings something different every day. It’s not about getting through the day, but living life to the full. Most people who work in care enjoy being imaginative in helping those they care for make the most of every day, so that they can do as much or as little as they want to. Having this ‘get up and go’ attitude is refreshing for everyone, it gives those being cared for a lift, and improves wellbeing all round. Animals often play a huge part in people’s lives. Becoming frail or having your activities restricted by illness may limit where you live or what you can do, but your love for animals doesn’t have to go away. For many living at home, their dog or cat becomes an even bigger part of their lives, but for those in residential care, this

is no longer possible. Bluebird Care works with other care providers to bring pet therapy into care homes – and even the ponies come too! The smell of a horse, for those who have loved and cared for them over the years, is so evocative it brings back many happy memories, sparking conversation and engaging positive emotions, which is particularly beneficial for those with dementia. What better way to spend a day, than bringing light, life and a bit of sparkle into tired eyes! Bluebird Care is growing its team of care professionals in Cornwall, and welcomes enquiries to have a chat and see if this is a lifestyle choice that could suit your needs. For more information call 01872 276006 or email midcornwall@bluebirdcare.co.uk

Wheal Martyn are delighted to present a new exhibition, ‘Clay Country’, by contemporary artist Kurt Jackson. Taking place from 3rd April to 5th July 2020, the exhibition is influenced by his artist in residence at Littlejohns China Clay Works. Kurt’s work is fuelled by a long-standing interest in Cornwall’s extractive industry and its role in shaping the physical landscape, culture and heritage of Cornwall. For this project, Kurt worked in situ at the clay works, observing workers in the pit as they extracted and transported the china clay in an extraordinary man-made landscape. The exhibition includes new mixed media paintings, from huge tarpaulin-sized canvases to small intimate studies. Wheal Martyn tells the story of Cornwall’s china clay industry, so Jackson’s work is a fitting exhibition for the launch of the museum’s new gallery. The local, family run business started in 2016 when Kevin (the director) decided to build his own garden building to give him and his family more space at home. When Kevin and his wife Vicki saw for themselves how useful their garden building was in alleviating pressure on the family home, they were inspired to set up a business providing beautiful bespoke garden buildings for other people with similar needs. In 2015 the first site opened at oonha ern arden Centre where the company’s reputation for excellent customer service and high-quality workmanship took the

Situated in prime position to enjoy the best of both coasts, on the edge of Cardhinam Woods, is this gorgeous courtyard of converted 19th century barns.

ocated at the end of a long driveway that provides a great sense of seclusion and privacy, this stunning collection of barn conversions enjoys six private acres of woodland, paddocks and gardens, whilst the exteriors of the properties retain much of their original charm and character. Inside, the interiors boast sleek and stylish, contemporary designs from the experts at Iroka. There are three properties in total: Mill Barn sleeps up to eight, Callywith sleeps four, and The Snug sleeps two. Each is perfectly self-contained with dedicated gardens and outdoor seating areas, and all are linked by an expansi e lawned courtyard li ely first impression is that Cardinham Barns would provide an excellent home with income, and you’d be right. In fact, the current owners have the entire property listed with the premium holiday letting company, Perfect Stays, where they attract visitors wanting to make the most of the outdoors during their stay in Cornwall, and you can see why! It has 620 acres of woodland right on its doorstep, with miles upon miles of walks, mountain bike trails and bridleways. The location is

central to both coasts and has excellent access to both the A30 and A38 road networks, and Bodmin Parkway railway station is also very nearby too, making it an excellent opportunity for anybody hoping to enjoy Cornwall’s growing staycation market. As mentioned, Cardinham Barns would make an excellent permanent residence – a ready-to-move-into dream home with ample space for a family and surrounding land that provides excellent equestrian opportunities. Indeed, despite the property’s palpable air of seclusion, a world of adventure and exploration, both inland and across both Cornish coasts is all accessible. However you intend to capitalise on this opportunity, the fact is that there are very few like it on today’s Cornish market. But don’t just take our word for it; Cardinham Barns needs seeing to be believed, so be sure to contact Rohrs & Rowe and arrange a viewing.

The innovators at Oltco continue to pave the way as pioneers in resin-bound solutions, at the same time turning the tide in the fight against plastic pollution.

 TOP Stunning new surfaces laid with the environment in mind

t the beginning of 2019, two entrepreneurs from Cornwall came up with a unique solution to help tackle the issue of plastic waste littering the globe. Now, over 12 months since the launch of Oltco’s Recycle Bound, the product has recycled the equivalent of 30 million plastic straws! Not only is it being used on driveways up and down the country, it’s also being adopted at some of the UK’s leading hotels and attractions! Oltco Directors, Tom Stringer and Johnny Pearce, were inspired to develop the product, having grown increasingly concerned over the devastating environmental impact of plastic waste on the planet. The development of Recycle Bound took two years and since its launch, it already boasts an impressive string of accolades, including ‘Product of the Year’ at the Cornwall Business Awards, and runner up for ‘Recycled Product of the Year’ at the National Recycling Awards. Having been used to create 150 square metres of pathways at Carbis Bay Hotel near St Ives – using the equivalent of 450,000 plastic straws – as well as at Trevornick Holiday Park near Newquay, where the equivalent of more than three million plastic straws were used to upgrade and replace the park’s paths and pool surround, Recycle Bound is clearly meeting a growing demand for more environmentally conscious solutions to these kinds of projects. As Tom puts it: “We have been thrilled by the

response to Recycle Bound. Every member of our team has fully embraced it and it has proved hugely popular with our customers, both residential and commercial.” Indeed, the number of customers requesting it to be used for driveways, paths and patios is growing all the time, and Johnny tells us: “We are grateful for all the individuals and companies who have come on board in a bid to help us tackle the global issue of plastic waste. “At Oltco, we never rest on our laurels,” Johnny continues. “It’s in our DNA to innovate and we are constantly looking for new ways to reduce our impact on the environment. We are now working on another world first product that will also utilise waste plastic.” He assures us: “It will be a game changer when it is launched later this year, so watch this space!”

SENSATIONAL Wendron Stoves has been selling and installing stoves around Cornwall for generations

urrent Wendron Stoves owner, Nathan Ward, has been selling and installing wood-burning stoves for 35 years. He picked up the trade from his Dad, Maurice Ward, who would take him along to fabrication shops and foundries as a child, so it’s fair to say that Nathan was brought up alongside the business. Around 35 years ago Nathan took over the company, making the transition from manufacturing to retail. After trading from the village of Wendron since 1981 the company made the move to Water-ma-Trout industrial estate in Helston in 2015 and has recently opened a second showroom on Truro’s Quay Street. On display in the showrooms you ll find an extensi e range of British and European stoves, including Chesneys, Chilli Penguin, Hwam, Hase,

Spatherm, Jotul, Scan and Focus, together with fireplaces and erhot heat storage range cookers. Since Nathan began learning the tricks of the trade, various technological advancements over the years have allowed sto es to become more e cient owadays, there’s a tangible desire from consumers for sto es to fit into modern and contemporary architecture. Consequently, modern stoves could well be mistaken for works of art. There is also a desire from governing bodies for sto es to burn fuel as e ciently as possible to prevent so many particulates entering the atmosphere. Luckily, Nathan sits on committees with the Stove Industry Alliance (SIA) and Hetas – the solid fuel and safety standards organisation, through which he helped to update the installation guidance

and standard for solid fuel appliances and chimneys. Nathan’s participation with these organisations allows him to stay up to date with the latest information concerning stove developments, such as the need for more ecofriendly and low carbon emitting designs. With an ever-increasing concern surrounding carbon emissions, the biggest challenge that the stove industry faces at the moment revolves around whether they are eco-friendly or not. Thankfully, with technological advancements, stoves built after 2010 are generally specially designed to reduce carbon emissions, ensuring that air quality is maintained. In January 2019, following a survey of 1,206 members of the public who use solid fuel to heat their homes, the UK Clean Air Strategy suggested the increase in burning solid fuels such as wood and coal in our homes is the largest contributor to national particulate emissions at 38%. However, the SIA disputed this figure ha ing conducted its own user survey of 10,620 wood stove owners, using the same questions and methodology as applied to the original sur ey, it placed the figure nearer to 15%. The SIA user survey also found that more than 27% of appliances emitting the most particulate matter were open fires or sto es o er years old, using less e cient technology than their modern equivalent and accounting for over half of the UK’s annual wood fuel consumption. By replacing these models with the latest Ecodesign ready stoves – which have been tailor made to meet the 2022 European requirements – stove owners could reduce emissions by almost 45% and take wood-burning particulate matter emissions down to 8%. So, if you want to install a wood-burning stove, but are conscious of your carbon footprint, then make sure to choose a new eco-design model. Equally, if you have a wood-burning stove in your home or business that’s 10 years old or over, it may be time to consider replacing it with a newer, more environmentally friendly model.

Today, Wendron Stoves employs 21 full and part time staff across sales, administration, installation and servicing of wood, biomass and solar thermal heating systems. These include Nathan’s daughters Ashley and Molly – the third generation of Wards to join the family business. Ashley manages the Truro showroom, and Molly is a Biomass Service Engineer, so you know you’ll get a personal ser ice from start to finish from experts in the trade o find out more, ma e sure to get in touch and discover how you can install aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly heating solutions this year.

cross two stores in Truro, the Uneeka team champions a lifestyle made fair, placing the utmost importance in where its furniture and homewares come from. Store Manager, Jess Preen explains: “We try our hardest to fill our store with ranges from ethical and eco-companies, and always make sure that workers are being paid a fair wage and treated well, before we buy from them.” Jess and the team take the time to ensure the companies they source from also have sustainable practises, like reusing and recycling materials. Many also use innovative methods such as biodegradable packaging and chemical-free dying, water collecting, wind turbines and solar energy, as well as using recycled fabrics, materials and reclaimed wood to create their products. “We believe our ethos and dedication to forming great relationships with our suppliers has allowed us to grow,” Jess continues. “We work with our suppliers that know every step of production, are on a first name basis, and have long-standing relationships.” The team also strives to support the local community by sourcing products as locally as possible. Where this isn’t achievable, instead, Jess and co search for the best airtrade companies further afield “Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers

in the developing world,” Emily tells us, who works alongside Jess. “Our Fairtrade suppliers seek to work with disadvantaged and marginalised producers and to develop business with them to help them become financially stronger and more independent e try to buy craft products that reflect the culture and tradition, and that utilise the skills of, the supplier.” Uneeka does also buy from some larger producers, Emily informs us, but only “if we are happy that they are also adhering to the principles of Fairtrade.” Many larger suppliers are able to provide better ob security, facilities and benefits for their workers, and many are able to support community or charitable projects, and where this is the case, Uneeka is more than happy to source from them. With both a furniture and lifestyle store in Truro, and a new lifestyle store in Falmouth, Uneeka provides all aspects of interior design, founded on the concept of Fairtrade and providing customers with the best ethical products for their home and lifestyle. Ultimately, concludes Jess: “When you shop with us, you don’t need to compromise on style to shop ethically. With Fairtrade, you have the power to change the world every day.”

stability Ground screw foundations are the simple solution to supporting timber constructions.

G ABOVE RIGHT A quick and efficient way to install solid foundations  RIGHT Easy to set up in any location

BELOW The highest quality ground screw technology

roundScrew Solutions deliver the highest quality ground screw foundation technology in the south west. Business owner, Hamish Gordon, first came across the ground screw technology three years ago when working as a Countryside cer managing ublic ccess for ormac “We would put in new, or replace old bridges and boardwalk systems across the county,” says Hamish. “But this process always involved digging holes, putting timbers into the ground and bac filling with concrete n comparison, ground screws provide a much easier solution as they don t re uire any timber or bac filling with concrete. Ground screws can support all timber above ground using only the screws themselves. This massively increases the lifespan of the supporting structure and as well as supporting impressive loading per screw, it greatly reduces the carbon footprint and the requirement for concrete. As concrete is currently the secondmost consumed substance on earth after water, choosing an alternative like this is a bit of a no-brainer, especially when it ticks so many boxes with timber construction. n fact, amish was so impressed with the potential of these screws that he left Cormac to first manage and then buy the round crew business. The ground screw product is now being viewed seriously by both domestic and commercial markets as a means of supporting summerhouses, pods, garden rooms, lodges and dec ing n fact, if it s timber construction, these screws can satisfy just about every requirement. Hamish can also offer bespoke, calibrated and safe working load data back to customers. Ground conditions vary enormously throughout the south west and so on many projects the customer, or their structural engineer, will want to know exactly how much loading the screws will take for their project. The installations are mess free, quick and easy, and if you compare them to removal of soil and pouring concrete, they are more than competitively priced. They will also work around tree roots or existing services and unlike concrete, there’s no waiting-around time to build off them.

For more information why not get in touch and chat further with Hamish? Alternatively, to book a site survey, simply give the team a call.

Founded in 1811, for over 200 years, Alfred Smith & Son has provided customers in the south west with a ‘one-stop’ solution to all of their furnishing needs.

roud to be Cornwall’s oldest family run business, Alfred Smith & Son in Penzance combines a comprehensive range of products with detailed industry knowledge, catering to every possible home improvement scenario. In short, whether you’re considering a complete refurbishment, or are updating a single room, at Alfred mith, you ll find absolutely e erything you need. erhaps you re replacing your floor co erings o problem ou ll find ranges from leading suppliers such as Brintons, Crucial Trading, Amtico and Karndean, to name just a few, and with a helpful team on hand to advise you on your options, you can rest assured that you ll find the perfect solution for your home. The best part is, they can even handle the installation – removing all of the stress from what should, after all, be an exciting purchase. The same applies to window treatments; whether you’re in search of simple roller blinds, or dressings for ‘problem’ windows, the team are experts at helping you find a solution that suits your style and, most importantly, your budget. “There is not a lot we haven’t seen before,” explains business owner, Sue Calvert, so you know you’re in safe hands! As we’ve already mentioned, Alfred Smith specialises in furniture. As Sue says:

“That’s our main business. We carefully select the ranges we offer for quality and value for money. We will even check if the furniture will go in before you order and, of course, deliver and set it up for you. It’s all part of the service.” If you’re updating your bedroom, you’ll be pleased to know that in store there are more than 40 different beds on display. This means that you can ‘try before you buy’ – comparing all the different combinations of frames and mattresses, before making an informed decision with help from the friendly team. Perhaps you own a holiday home here in the Duchy? If so, as well as all of the above, Alfred Smith & Son can store your orders, and co-ordinate deliveries and installations to fit your schedule, which is a real lifesa er if you’re managing the project from outside of the county! With a personable approach to customer service – one that goes the extra mile to help alleviate the stresses of home-improvement – it’s fair to say that Alfred Smith & Son, Cornwall’s oldest family run business, is much more than just a furniture store.

Looking for the right Cornish company to help bring your construction plans to life? Look no further than Hebask Homes Ltd.

he Cornish word for ‘calm’, ‘serene’, or ‘peaceful, ‘Hebask’ was the clear choice when Ross Elliott and Charlie ingfield came to name their business. “Our aim is to create homes, not just houses,” Ross explains. “Whether that be the home of a business or a family, we work with designs that cater to the unique needs of the project, person or business.” Charlie and Ross adopt a creative approach towards construction, focusing on tradition and innovation, utilising renewable energy, and bringing sustainable practises very much to the forefront. It isn’t just new builds they can help with, although their modern approach to bringing projects to life ‘from the ground up’ is certainly worth considering, if that’s what you have planned! “We deal with a wide spectrum of construction, residential and commercial projects, from new-builds to renovations and historical restorations,” Charlie elaborates. Their aim, along with their trusted team of traders, is to create, or bring back to life, unique properties that are sympathetic to their surroundings. So, how can they help you? As mentioned, the team can manage and execute a wide variety of projects, covering anything from new builds and project consultancy, to heritage building restorations, architectural services and full renovations. It’s their

approach to client communication that really shines; often it can be easy to feel ‘out of the loop’. Not so with Hebask. “With a tried and tested management system,” Ross tells us, “our objective is to make the client feel as if they are in touch with the project on a weekly basis, by providing progress reports and up to date financial summaries.” This approach keeps you, the client, at the forefront of your project, ensuring the end results reflect what you set out to achieve, whilst enjoying the creative process. Don’t just take our word for it though; head to the ebas website and you ll find a stream of glowing testimonials, praising the team’s “ability to understand my vision completely”, commenting on their “valuable input in terms of the design and building process”, and ultimately, thanking them for having “saved us time and money”. In short, if you’re undertaking a construction project of any size, getting in touch with Hebask comes highly recommended!

garden protection Cornwall has certainly felt the powerful winter storms of late and storm Ciara helped play a huge part in the destruction of many Cornish fences. Luckily, those who have invested in Colourfence have found no such problem. With stylish steel fences that can withstand gusts of wind up to 130mph, customers can sleep soundly. A colourfence project completed almost three years ago saw a Newquay church which had a 150m line of fencing installed. At 1.8m high, the fence has withstood numerous violent storms from the Atlantic, with one side overlooking Fistral beach. So impressed with how well the fencing had performed, one of the parishioners has since placed an order to protect her own garden. For a metal garden fence that is attractive, fit for purpose and without costly, time consuming annual treatments, why not speak to Colourfence for a friendly and professional quote? Your new kitchen should look great on the outside, but it’s what goes on behind the scenes that really makes a difference. Pull out bins for rubbish and recycling help keep your kitchen tidy, deep drawers with dividers

Innovative interior solutions

Chloe Woods is a problem solver. She loves to explore different ways of using materials, and some of the beautiful interiors at St Michael’s Resort are evidence enough of her ability to create engaging spaces. Chloe is an interior architect; there is an important distinction here that she delivers far more to her clients than just advice on colour schemes and furniture choices. “With 20 years’ technical experience,” she tells us, “I’m able to deliver every stage of a project, from concept to completion.” This could be a concept proposal for the look and feel of your space with suggested suppliers, through to a full construction drawing pac age with detailed specifications, and liaison with your contractors.”

Offering detailed space planning and images to help you visualise your project, if you’re looking for an all-inclusive service to help bring your ideal space to life, whatever stage you’re at, be sure to give Chloe Woods a call. A BETTER WAY Introducing Post and Beam Ltd – bringing to the fore the environmental benefits of timber construction since 2014.

There's something distinctly charming about oak frames

ost and Beam Ltd has been a leading authority in Cornish timber construction since 2014. Previously known as Carpenter Oak Cornwall, the company made a conscious decision to separate from the Carpenter Oak Group in early 2020. Post and Beam offers a Cornish focused and ecologically mindful approach to oak frames and timber construction. The master craftsmen at Post and Beam boast years of experience in building and design, which, combined with the versatility of timber, allows for an array of possibilities. Popular throughout Cornwall and the south west are their beautiful timber buildings, including the art gallery at Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens in Penzance, Rick Stein’s The Cornish Arms in Padstow, and the Seven Stones Inn on the Isles of Scilly, as well as countless domestic oak frame houses, extensions and sunrooms throughout the Duchy. Both the core internal pegged frame and insulated timber panels are manufactured in their specialist yard near St Ives. Construction under workshop conditions enables fixed costs, rapid site times and control o er influencing en ironmental

to build

factors; in short, workshop fabrication does not depend on the weather! Post and Beam also offers a range of insulation methods for its panels to meet varying budgets, although customers with aspirations of a warm, comfortable and environmentally friendly home, tend to choose the ecological option of wood fibre

16/03/2020 10:31

 ABOVE Post & Beam has influenced some of Cornwall's most incredible buildings and spaces

Fabricated mostly in renewable materials, the buildings Post and Beam designs and creates make an attractive and sustainable alternative to the conventional building materials of concrete, stone and steel. he team source their oa , ouglas fir and glulams (Glued Laminated Timber) from sustainable forests throughout the UK and Europe, where the forestry management schemes of FSC and PEFC – the internationally recognised standard of forest management – ensure timber used is an entirely sustainable resource. More trees are planted than harvested thanks to these regulations, which means that with the growth of timber construction, forests are actually thriving. The French management system established in 1872 has a staggering 524 million cubic metres of standing oak, with annual production running at under 1 million. hat s more, timber is classified as a carbon neutral material; as trees grow they lock away carbon dioxide, but mature trees absorb less than those at an earlier stage of growth. Older trees are harvested for construction purposes and converted into a usable building material, and their timber

retains its carbon dioxide for the remainder of its life in a building. In fact, every cubic metre of timber absorbs one ton of carbon dioxide, making it a sound ecological choice – addressing climate change and the need to reduce CO2 emissions in the construction industry. Building environmentally conscious homes across Cornwall by partnering sustainable materials with ecological design, if you’re thinking about home improvement, or are undertaking a self-build, be sure to stop by the Post and Beam stand at this year’s Cornwall Home & Garden Show and see how you could minimise the environmental footprint of your dream home.

“This makes it easy to put a well-designed scheme together that doesn’t look too contrived and achieves an effortless look. We are using fabrics and wallpaper from the new spring and summer collections to create this fresh and vibrant scheme, which is built up of various shades and textures. Maintaining a mono palette also helps to curate a calm interior as it’s tonal rather than contrasting.” When it comes to furnishing your home, starting with a mood board is a great way of putting your ideas on paper and building your dream interior. Using images from Pinterest, magazine cuttings or a favourite painting will help get you the look you want. You need no skill for this, but the Cotton Mills team can show you some tricks of the trade at one of the Free Mood Board workshops in the new shop, so make sure to stay up to date with workshops and announcements on the Cotton Mills website and social media.

Kestrel Handrail systems recently completed a collaboration project for a property renovation which achieved fantastic results.

estrel Handrail Systems allows you to incorporate safe railing solutions into your home or business. Owners Katie and Bruce Grant work together to provide an all-round service. Bruce specialises in the design and installation of balconies and balustrading and Katie focuses on the administration and customer service element of the business. Together, the couple provide a seamless service installing bespoke handrail systems throughout Cornwall. One of their most recent projects was to complete the handrail installation of a feature staircase and outdoor space for a property renovation. This involved collaborating with the construction business involved, Ridgwells Ltd (ridgwells.co.uk), in order to execute the installation to the client’s requirements and to complete the pro ect on time e had already worked with Ridgwells on another project so we were keen to work with them again,” ruce says, especially considering their craftsmanship, attention to detail, design and accuracy or ing alongside a company with the same end goal is always a pleasure.” As previously mentioned, Kestrel were involved with two separate areas of the project. A staircase had already been installed and required compliant ‘guarding’ with the actual guarding element offering low visual impact, meaning that the staircase could be the focal point sing laminate glass, we offered appropriate safety, but fixing to the

treads allowed the staircase to remain the star,” says Bruce. Outside, any area which offered a risk of falling needed to be safely guarded. Using stainless steel posts, handrails and a toughened glass balustrade meets that criteria, not to mention that the use of glass still gives the enjoyment of far-reaching views, doesn’t darken any areas, and pro ides a flawless finish e aim for functional with clean lines to match the rest of the build, ruce says e want to enhance, not detract from any location.” So, if you want to enhance your property’s safety and aesthetic appeal, make sure to visit the Kestrel Handrail stand at the Home Show on 2nd and 3rd May and discover how Bruce and Katie can help you with your home or business project this year.

Rick Stein’s Cookery School continues to cook up a storm as it marks its 20th anniversary.

COMMEMORATIVE APRON As a celebration of 20 years of the cookery school in Padstow, a special commemorative Rick Stein apron has been designed. It would make the perfect gift for anyone that has been to the school before, would love to but hasn’t had the chance, or simply a home cook that loves Rick’s ethos of fresh fish, simply cooked. Available to purchase via www.rickstein.com

t was two decades ago that Rick Stein’s Cookery School was launched, showcasing Rick’s famous recipes and how to cook like the seafood master. The cookery school has always shared Rick’s ethos of using the freshest seafood, often caught from the very estuary that students look out over from the school’s window. Speaking to Rick, he couldn’t be prouder of the school’s chefs and students: “This year we celebrate our 20th anniversary. I started it to give the chefs at The Seafood Restaurant a bit more intensive training in preparing and coo ing fish and shellfish o eep the lecturers, all chefs from the restaurant, gainfully employed I ran a few courses for aspiring cooks. It was an instant success with the public and now it s hard to find slots for the chefs, but the principle remains the same – teaching by chefs who really know what they’re doing.” Course content varies and there really is something for everyone, from half days and full days, to longer two and four-day courses. If you fancy just dipping your toes in the culinary waters then there are also one-dish workshops, tasting evenings and, for the entertainers at heart, ‘cook your own dinner’ evenings. One-dish workshops are the perfect way to spend an evening in Padstow. Here you can sit back and watch the chefs demonstrate

how to cook one of Rick’s favourite dishes and then develop your own cookery skills and techniques whilst you recreate the dish. You’ll then get to enjoy the fruits of your labour with a glass of good wine whilst overlooking the beautiful Camel Estuary. The school’s four-day course is the culmination of Rick’s 40-year passion for fresh fish, simply coo ed ll guests are invited to join the team on the Sunday for a complimentary Prosecco and canapé reception, before being immersed into a culinary adventure, cooking the best seafood in Cornwall. This course offers the perfect balance of demonstrations by the chefs alongside hands-on cooking, with plenty of time for tasters and lunch. You will also enjoy a not to be missed morning sea fishing trip from Padstow harbour. If you want to don your apron and cook your own dinner, the school offers a brilliant dinner party with a twist! Experience a hands-on evening, with a glass of wine and canapés of course, before watching two chef demonstrations, replicating the dishes, then sitting down to enjoy the dishes you've prepared. If you really don’t feel like doing any of the hard work in the kitchen, then why not try a tasting evening? Sit back and relax with a glass or two of wine and tasters of the three dishes demonstrated by Stein’s chefs.

The Housel Bay Hotel and Restaurant provides foodie flair in a stunning coastal setting.

ocated on the very edge of the Lizard peninsula, with the cool waters of the Atlantic ocean stretching before you, is the Housel Bay Hotel and Restaurant. A wildly beautiful place to visit this year, it provides a sanctuary of seclusion for those looking for a relaxing escape. Whether you’re after a weekend away or want to seek refuge at the hotel for a delicious roast on a Sunday afternoon, the doors are always open for those wishing to take a break from the stresses of modern life. It’s not surprising that Housel Bay’s exceptional location in one of Cornwall’s most remote and beautiful areas acts as inspiration behind every aspect of your stay. Everything from the décor to the menu encourages going ‘back to nature’, so that you can immerse yourself in your surroundings and just breathe again. Not to mention that the restaurant has recently been renovated to incorporate nature into the design as well as collaborating with local artists and designers such as Jo Downs and om a eld

The hotel is lucky to be perched right on nature’s edge, at the most southerly point of the UK, and the idea is to echo the coastal surroundings in the restaurant through both the setting and the food. We hear from Marketing Manager Phoebe who tells us: “We invite our guests to immerse themselves in nature when they arrive, walk the coastal paths, and take a breath. when re-designing the restaurant this was all at the forefront of design inspiration.” he ead hef, oseph allowfield, has also been influenced by the hotel s natural surroundings. His food is guided by the seasons, with the spring menu featuring a range of fresh, delicate and beautifully balanced dishes that are sure to leave you wanting more. “Housel Bay is nestled into rugged cliffs and surrounded by coastal grasslands,” Joe says. “This provides a huge opportunity for our chefs to forage for ingredients both on the beach and on land. The road to the hotel is full of wild garlic, three-cornered leek and sorrel so it seems logical that they will be on the menu.” Joe has also curated a tasting menu with the intention to provide an even more unique dining experience. “Chefs should always cook for their customers and this is the logic behind our tasting menu. Our guests are exploring Cornwall. At dinner, we want to continue this by creating dishes designed around ingredients from the locations that surround us. For example, we ha e a local fishing co e, adgwith, where we source the majority of our seafood and where the majority of our guests visit, so it

makes sense for me to create a dish based around that, and the same goes for the other dishes on the tasting menu.” When you visit Housel Bay you are set to experience quiet roads, clean air and beautiful walks along the South West Coast Path. All this served alongside stunning views of the Lizard peninsula. “Each season has its own beautiful quality,” says Phoebe, “and we want to showcase them all.” To embrace the season of spring at the Housel Bay Hotel, and to enjoy the carefully curated menu that champions local produce and a seasonal approach, get in touch with the friendly team who will be more than happy to help. It really couldn’t be a better place to escape and re-set, so if you’re in need of some space and fresh air this year, you know where to go.

ith a passion for quality that’s evident in everything they produce, it’s really no surprise that the fabulous team at Boscastle Farm Shop has just won the Gold award for ‘Best Café/Tea Room’ in Cornwall, and Silver at the South West of England Tourism Awards! Add to these Gold awards from Taste of the West, a place in TripAdvisor’s top 10 ‘best roast dinners’ in Cornwall, and placement in the finals in the ountryside lliance wards for the south west region, and you have a seriously impressive string of accolades! With scintillating views of the north coast cliffs, the Atlantic, and rolling countryside, the location offers visitors a truly Cornish foodie experience. The farm shop has its own butchery onsite, stocked with local products including meat from the farm’s own pedigree red ruby cattle, which goes into their very own sought-after burgers and sausages. Head into the café and deli, open from 9am to 4pm, and you ll also find homemade uiches, frittatas, pies, pasties, scones, desserts, lunches and cakes, as well as a daily seasonal specials board. The shop, which is open from 9am to 5pm, is crammed with local goodies, fresh produce, fish and be erages, as well as a range of gifts and treats – many of which are local – helping to make your

visit truly magical. With so much to offer, it’s unsurprisingly always busy at Boscastle Farm Shop, so it’s a good idea to book a table for lunch, especially if you’re celebrating a special occasion. If you’re feeling energetic, why not wander down to the pretty village of Boscastle, with your takeaway goodies tucked away in a hamper, or strike out along the South West Coast Path, which lies just 50 metres from the café. Looking ahead to the rest of the year and, as well as joining forces with The Pop Up Cinema Company (www. thepopupcinemacompany.co.uk) to host Friday night open-air cinema nights, the team will also be bringing back their muchloved barbeque and hog roast events, all of which include live music and entertainment. These evenings are a fantastic way to enjoy all of the deliciousness of the farm shop as you watch the sun dip beyond the horizon. Whatever the time of day, if you’re out and about near Boscastle, a visit to Boscastle Farm Shop, to sate that sharp sea-air appetite, comes highly recommended!

Harbour View Café Popular with locals and visitors alike, the Harbour View Café is situated right next to the South West Coast Path in the heart of Porthleven. Featuring spectacular views across the harbour and out to sea, it’s a great place to rest and refuel during your explorations of the area. Offering freshly cooked all-day breakfasts as well as lunches, the whole menu is cooked from scratch, catering for vegans, gluten allergies and vegetarians, with plenty of delights to choose from, whatever the time of year. We did a little digging and found a review from one happy customer, who says: “Consistently excellent. Have tried scones (lovely and warm), lunches (the crab special is a must!), amazing breakfasts, lovely teas, coffees, beers, wines – the list is endless! Quality of food is top class. Warm welcome every time, also brilliant with children. Price is great for quality produce. We have tried several other eateries in Porthleven but we will always recommend the Harbour View Café.” Managers Kizzy and Penny have already built a fantastic rapport with customers, especially those looking to take a load off while the dogs curl up beneath the table. For

our dog review, we’ve found this from one happy whippet: “Our whippet loves it there and goes straight to the dog biscuit jar. Can’t fault it!”

The fantastic journey of a much-loved Cornish seascape artist.

or those with a penchant for Cornish art, the name Vincent Basham immediately conjures up vivid imagery, producing colourful seascapes and radiant oil paintings that capture Cornwall’s coastline in the most beautiful and sublime way. With an incredible ability to somehow encapsulate dusky skies, the rolling sea and waves crashing, Vincent manipulates paint to create a stunning real-life effect. The astonishing tones created, utilising colour and light, clearly radiate out of his paintings which certainly captivate the observer. With many pieces of his work having been displayed in the most prestigious of galleries throughout the , incent asham has firmly become a celebrated seascape artist. Vincent has even had the fortune of discussing his work with HRH Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall whilst showcasing his Cornish art in Essex, which really does mean that his work has been given the royal seal of approval. ome of his first pieces of art were exhibited whilst he was still a teenager in his home town of Maldon in Essex, which is staggering, but upon learning that Vincent was largely self-taught, the sense of accomplishment on his unbelievable journey is purely remarkable. Vincent Basham has a purpose-built studio and gallery in in the north Cornish town of Wadebridge, where he also resides with his partner Jane and their dog Stella. The gallery and studio look out over the Camel Trail with exceptional views of the Camel Estuary, which

only adds to the inspirational thought process which is clearly present in his fantastic art. Vincent Basham has announced a string of 2020 exhibitions at the Padstow Institute from 19th to 29th April, 6th to 15th July, and 4th to 15th ctober, allowing art aficionados to iew and experience the way this talented seascape artist can capture a moment so accurately, bringing to life the colours and tones of sea, sky, sunlight and surf in a way that is even more compelling than a photograph.

Located close to the sea in west Cornwall, Trevena Cross successfully grows plants adapted to a coastal landscape.

BELOW RIGHT Windbreak plants like Elaeagnus Compacta are crucial in coastal planting

herever you live in Cornwall you’re never far from the coast, which is both a privilege and a responsibility. Living here requires an understanding of the unique ocean landscape and its challenging climate, nowhere more so than in the garden. Creating a sustainable coastal landscape requires enthusiasm, a peek to see what your neighbours are growing, and advice from some plant savvy folk. That’s where Trevena Cross comes in. Located about a mile from the sea in west Cornwall, Trevena Cross has been successfully growing plants in its nursery and garden centre that are adapted to this very landscape, across 35 acres, for more than four decades. Trevena Cross Owner and experienced plantsman Graham Jeffery shares a few words of wisdom to help inspire wannabe coastal gardeners: “A coastal garden with a decent windbreak is crucial to the success of everything else growing there, helping to create your garden’s very own microclimate. We recommend the toughest of hedging for coastal locations, like Elaeagnus ebbingei Compacta or Olearia traversii. Griselinia littoralis is also perfect for a position set a bit further back from the sea.” Trevena Cross also advises people on being aware of wind rock. Graham continues: “Wind rock is the destabilisation of a plants

roots by strong winds, and can be avoided by keeping the plant lower to the ground during the autumn/winter months. Autumn is a great time to plant for establishment beneath the ground, however we advise top growth to be kept down, and plants to be pruned right back where vulnerable. It may seem drastic in the short term but it could save your plant in the long term.” Poor, free draining soils, and salt-laden winds are typical of coastal locations and so choosing plants that tolerate such conditions is key. Another top tip is to make sure you choose a good quality, slow-release fertiliser (like Trevena Cross Fertiliser) that will feed your plants for the complete season. Graham concludes: “Warmer coastal temperatures mean you can take advantage of a huge range of plants – why not introduce seasonal patio plants? Many of which do exceptionally well by the coast. You can’t beat succulents, foliage and subtropical plants for wonderful contrast and texture too.”

IN TRUST Trebah celebrates 30 years in trust with an ambitious project taking place in the gardens this year.

ABOVE  Introducing the larger than life size lion, Tevi INSET Head to Trebah to watch an illuminating performance with Tevi at centre stage

ntroducing ‘Tevi’, a larger than life-size lion and a season of events, workshops and ways to interact with Trebah Garden as an inspirational, entertaining and relaxing space. Tevi, pronounced ‘Teh - vee’, is also the Cornish word for ‘grow’, growth being the foundation topic of Trebah’s community, schools and outreach programme for 2020. Building on the success of Operation Overlord last year, which saw over 15,000 people interact with a programme of events and a performance based around the 75th anniversary of D-Day, the garden has chosen to build, or ‘grow’, the community it created further, this time exploring themes of health and wellbeing, acceptance, personal growth, community growth and global growth. For 2020, the project will be centred around a professional performance and promenade show called Dandy Lion, a collaboration between Cousin Jack’s Theatre Company, writer Charlotte O’Leary, and Team Trebah members Guy Watson and Jonathan Bray. Dandy Lion is an ambitiousin-scale, puppetry-orientated show that will tell the story of one lion’s journey from cub to fully grown lion, as he learns that his individuality is his strength. The performance will feature an enormous lion puppet created by the team behind the National Theatre’s production of War Horse.

Directed by Guy Watson, Artist Director of Cousin Jack’s family theatre company, with puppetry direction from Bec Applebee, Head of Puppetry from ‘Man Engine’, well-respected Cornish theatre maker and performer. The show will also feature a musical score created by Ben Sutcliffe of the People’s String Foundation, who returns to the garden for 2020 with performers Emily Faulkner and Oliver Longstaff (familiar as lead roles from Operation Neptune). They will also be joined by puppeteers Jennie Rawling and Stacey Mitchell. Performances will take place during May Half Term and tickets are on sale now! Visit www.trebah-garden.co.uk/events to find out more and how to boo ast year’s performance sold out swiftly, so early booking is recommended to catch the amazing spectacle of a 2.5 metre lion puppet and a spell-binding soundscape in this gorgeous Cornish valley garden.

THROUGH TIME Extensive collections reveal a fascinating insight into times gone by, at Helston’s Cornish Museum of Life.

ABOVE  Discover this fantastic museum's many and varied exhibitions

f you’re staying near Helston, you’re well set to discover the best that Cornwall has to offer. Indeed, just a short scoot up the coast, in the market town of Helston, you’ll find the useum of ornish ife, offering a fascinating insight into the area’s rich tapestry of history and heritage. The building was originally designed as the town’s market house in 1837, with two separate buildings – one for butter and eggs, the other for the meat market. Today, it retains the original sloping floor, which adds to the authenticity of experience as you wander back in time to the Cornish days of yore. In front of the museum is a cannon, sal aged from the wrec of the frigate nson, which foundered off oe ar in 1807. Around 100 sailors’ lives were lost in the disaster, inspiring Henry Trengrouse to invent the ‘Rocket’ lifesaving apparatus, which can be found inside the museum. Head inside and you’ll immediately find that the museum contains a ast social history collection. Dating from the 18th to the 20th century, the range of objects covers agriculture, local trades and industries, as well as law and order, town history, home life, toys, sporting

equipment, gardening, transport and health and leisure activities. Indeed, the sporting display features the famous ob it simmons who, heralding from Helston, made boxing history as the sport s first three di ision world champion. The Victorian Classroom, meanwhile, provides a fascinating (and, indeed, eye opening!) insight for children, to see what life was like for pupils all those years ago. The museum boasts the best costume collections of the south west, also offering a regular programme of temporary exhibitions, meaning that there’s usually something new to be found every time you isit ith a team that firmly belie es in learning as a life long process, if you re staying in or near Helston and hoping to brush up on your Cornish history, a trip to elston s useum of ornish ife comes highly recommended.

How to celebrate 40 years of adult hospice care in Cornwall? Attempt a world record!

ow do you fancy being a record breaker? All you have to do is eat a scone and clotted cream, with am first of course, and drin a cup of tea. Hopefully, 1,199 other people will join you for the biggest tea party of the year! The Guiness World RecordTM attempt is being organised by Cornish charity Cornwall Hospice Care as part of their 40th anniversary celebrations. The team is running a host of special events throughout 2020, but the biggest of them all will be this extraordinary attempt to break a record. At present, the record for the Largest Cream Tea Party is held by Mercedes Benz in China who, in November 2019, sat 1,088 down to enjoy a jam and cream scone with a cup of tea. The record had previously been broken in October 2019 by the National Lottery with 1,054 people and prior to that by Cath Kidston in July 2018, with 978 people present. As Judy Lawton from Cornwall Hospice Care explains: “This just doesn’t feel right; the home of the cream tea is Cornwall and we need to bring this world record back as soon as possible, and with am first

The charity needs to sit at least 1,200 people down for the cream tea that will be held on Saturday 20th June in the Exhibition Hall at the Royal Cornwall Showground, Wadebridge. You can dress up too, as Judy explains: “As our charity is 40, we’re theming the party in 1940s style and there’ll be music and dancing with Company B and the Liberty Sisters. The rules for this attempt are very strict, so the event will run from 2pm to 5pm, with everyone sitting down to eat at 3pm. We’ve already had enormous support from many Cornish businesses who’re sponsoring the event, and with their help it’s going to be a fantastic occasion. Please join us and let’s bring the record back to where it belongs For full details of the event and to book your ticket to be a record breaker, be sure to visit the charity’s website at www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk/events/ the-largest-cream-tea-party.
