to the August issue of Cornwall Living

t feels like summer has finally arrived in Cornwall, and what better way to celebrate than getting out on the water. In our cover feature this month, I’ve been lucky enough to be able to wax lyrical about one of my favourite past times...sailing! hether aboard a boat, or watching the action from the shore, there is something really quite magical about boats with the wind in their sails. Turn to page 28 and find out more about how to get out on the water this season; young or old, beginner or expert, there is something for everyone. Falmouth is undeniably the south coast’s sailing capital and so, with the eagerly anticipated Falmouth eek almost upon us, we’ve been out and about discovering some of this cosmopolitan town’s exciting shops and businesses – turn to page 34 to disover more. As ever, this issue is packed full of properties, interiors, places to stay, art and a whole host of foodie favourites. So, wherever you’re exploring, be sure to pack a sunhat and a copy of Cornwall Living and you’ll have everything you need for the perfect summer.

low maintenance and built to last Fences play a key role in our gardens; they mark the boundary between our neighbours and provide security, keeping the kids and pets safe. So, it’s fair to say that they should be built to last.

Tim Woolcock Photography

The venue you’ve been dreaming of With amazing outdoor locations for your wedding ceremony and over ten acres of historic gardens for photos, Scorrier House makes the perfect summer wedding venue. Even if the famed Cornish mizzle does threaten, the house has one of the largest and most spectacular interiors of any wedding venue in the county. Seat 120 in one room and then take your first dance in the grand drawing room!

Colourfence -

Fortunately, Colourfence Cornwall have the perfect solution, with their stunning range of pre-coloured steel fencing guaranteed to last for 25 years. The fencing is made from Colourbond steel, one of the most advanced steel products in the world and beneath the surface, world leading technology in the form of Zincallume is hard at work delivering long life, anti-corrosion performance.

Dates for next year are filling up fast, so if you recently popped (or answered!) the question, be sure to get in touch as soon as possible to book a viewing.

Based in Tintagel, Olly and his team cover the whole of Cornwall, so if your fence is looking a little shabby, why not give him a call and book in a free quote?

Clutter free?

Let the viewings commence! This is the last tip in My Place in Cornwall’s three-part series about preparing your home for viewings. If you haven’t seen the others in the series, be sure to check out the link at the end of this article. To stay on top and always give the right first impression of your property, it’s important that you do a spot check of every room before you go out for the day and let your agent carry out viewings. Here are four simple steps to preparing in just 15 minutes: Step one: ready, steady, hoover! Step two: open the windows and get a good flow of fresh air. Step three take your pets, children and grandchildren out. Step four: draw subtle attention to the

positives. If you choose My Place in Cornwall as your agent the team is happy to provide advice like this to help you achieve the easy wins when getting ready to sell your property. For more information call 01208 813874 or visit www.myplaceincornwall.co.uk/spring

Let the sunshine in with Bude Windows It’s easy to see the benefits of adding a sun room to your home; it provides more space, brings more light into your home and looks great too. Bude Windows and Conservatories provide advanced sun room solutions such as fully insulated ‘Warm Roof’ designs. So, your new room will be quiet and comfortable all year round. Meaning that instead of having a part-time sun room, you’ll be able to relax, sit back and enjoy your living space all year round. A range of beautiful roof tile and slate swatches to choose from and optional skylights will also enhance the feel of your new living space. The pictured project shows a recent installation in north Cornwall carried out by the fully qualified team of builders and conservatory installers.

Rest and refuel at

Wavecrest, Lizard Point

Holiday home tips In an ongoing series of holiday home tips, we hear from George at Cornish Traditional Cottages about the benefits of Furnished Holiday Lets.

Overlooking Lizard Point, Wavecrest café makes the most of its position on mainland Britain’s most southerly point, with panoramic views. Situated at the start of the South West Coast Path leading to Kynance Cove, it’s the perfect place for a break on your tour of the Lizard, one where you can simply sit and soak up this atmospheric and historic location. The menu combines fresh, seasonal and local produce, with options ranging from sandwiches and light bites, to main meals, all made-to-order. In the mood for coffee, cake or a cream tea? No problem! The team serve their favourite blend of Italian coffee, as well as speciality teas and indulgent hot chocolates. Kids are sure to

love Wavecrest’s milkshake menu, while adults will appreciate the fact that the caf is fully licensed! The Lizard is a dog walker’s haven, with miles upon miles of coast path, beach and countryside for them to explore. Wavecrest understands this, welcoming well-behaved dogs on leads. This means that if you’re out on a family ramble and are planning a pit stop to refuel, your furriest of friends needn’t be left behind! With staggering views, a tantalising menu built from local Cornish fare and plenty of outside seating, Wavecrest café is a must-visit if you’re out and about on the Lizard this summer.

George tells us: “Unlike regular buy-to-let purchases, holiday lets can qualify for significant tax breaks. If your Cornish holiday let meets the conditions for a Furnished Holiday Let (FHL), you have several tax advantages. For example, you can deduct mortgage payments from your expenses and get capital allowances for fixtures and fittings. Making the prospect of renting your property even more tempting. George continues In addition, the property is exempt from council tax and may also be eligible for ero business tax. Did you know? To qualify as an FHL a holiday let in Cornwall must be available for at least 210 days a year and let for a minimum of 105. For more information call 01208 895354 or visit www.corncott.com

Live-in companionship for holidays & respite

Volunteers are at the heart of everything Cornish charity Cornwall Hospice Care does, with more than a thousand of them working across all departments contributing 2, hours – or 18.5 years – of their time annually. Every hour of contribution enables the charity to expand into new areas, such as community engagement, as well as supporting key departments, including clinical, fundraising and retail.

There’s nothing quite like a little break and time away, to recharge your batteries and recoup your enthusiasm for life. Daily routines can become that little bit drab, even when you really love your lifestyle.

Sally Sandford, Volunteer Services Manager, says you can’t underestimate the value of a volunteer, telling us: “Over the last year our volunteers saved our charity , , 2!

News & views Authentically Asian flavour at Kahuna If you ever speak to Kahuna owners Ryan and Kelly Mather you’ll soon realise they have plenty of passion and commitment. After their backpacking adventures around South East Asia, they made it their mission to bring an authentic taste of their travels to Newquay. The menu also reflects chef yan’s love of the fresh, clean flavours he experienced while working as a chef in Australia back in 2001. Cornish produce meets delicately spiced ingredients, sourced directly from Asia, in dishes which Nathan Outlaw declared ‘the best pan-Asian food you’ll get in Cornwall’. Kelly describes the interior as a tropical roof terrace with string lights,

A haven for locals Dating back as far as the 13th century, Trevince has long been an important part of the local community. Located in Gwennap, Trevince estate gardens are a popular place for locals to visit regularly thanks to the evolving landscape and variety of plants of horticultural interest. The Cart Shed café is a cosy place to relax with a coffee and a slice of cake after a tranquil stroll through the gardens. Well-behaved dogs on leads are always welcome too, and there’s even free parking! Purchase a locals’ pass and you can visit the gardens as often as you like throughout the season. Along with the Cart Shed café, they are open Friday, Saturday and Sunday until the end of September, welcoming visitors to discover and become part of their new story. New additions at

the Summerhouse The Summerhouse Gallery is a beautiful, welcoming space showcasing the very best of Cornish art. Located just across the water from St Michael’s Mount, the team aims to create the perfect place to discover paintings, jewellery, sculpture and glass in a relaxed setting. The ethos of the gallery is to showcase artists that vary from the well-established to the up-and-coming. Regardless of reputation, the team can put their hands on their hearts and say that each piece has been placed on the wall for one simple reason – they love it! This summer, the team is pleased to introduce abstract artist, Ellie Williams, to the Summerhouse collective. Responding instinctively to each layer with the next, she

explains: “When painting, I use vast layered washes of oil, almost like watercolour. To see Ellie’s work for yourself, be sure to pop into the Summerhouse Gallery. Alternatively, why not head to the website? For more information call 01736 611400 or visit www.summerhousegallery.co.uk

Realise your dream bathroom at Plumbase Wadebridge Plumbase in adebridge was first established on Trenant Industrial Estate in 2002. The wider brand has grown to be one of the best plumbers merchants in the south west, with a network of 200 branches nationwide!

The money you could make by letting your property can be used to fund amazing holidays, home maintenance and makeovers, or simply to boost your income. However, this kind of letting is rarely attractive to traditional letting agents because of the relatively short time periods involved. Instead, owners will typically need to list and market their properties themselves via online. But what if you lack the time or know-how?

Plumbase Wadebridge has just had a new bathroom showroom installed, with the final touches set to be completed by mid April. So, if you’re looking for a new bathroom, Justin, Stuart, Dave, Richard or Tom will be more than happy to show you around and give you the inspiration you need to help create your dream bathroom. At Plumbase Wadebridge, the team pride themselves on their service and stock. No problem is too big or too small, and they’ll always try to help you find solutions to suit your needs. They also provide a free local delivery service for larger items that can’t be collected from the stores. So, if you need

At this time of year, many Cornish residents are packing up and moving elsewhere in order to offer their homes to paying guests. Have you ever thought about doing the same?

anything plumbing related, be sure to pop into Plumbase or head to the website

Fortunately, List Assisters can help you get your property listed and, if you’d prefer, can also take care of the business side of things, such as dealing with enquiries and booking in guests. They don’t work on a commission percentage either, so you could be pocketing significantly more for the same service!

News & views Streamline your holiday home schedule

If you’re the proud owner of a holiday home in Cornwall but find yourself rushed off your feet on changeover days, perhaps local, family run business, Holiday Home Waste Collection Ltd, based in Wadebridge, could be of service.

Play, stay and train with Action Petz Cornwall Owners of Action Petz Cornwall Dog Day Care, Mark and Linda Whatley, were inspired to purchase an Action Petz franchise by their love of dogs and of the Duchy. As Linda puts it: “Where better to open but in Cornwall – the place we have always loved and wanted to be?” Very much a family-run business, Action Petz is the perfect place to leave your dog while you work, shop, run errands or head to the beach for the day. Your furry friends will have fun, getting lots of attention and plenty of love under the care of the professional team of Canine Practitioners. The centre boasts both indoor and outdoor areas for your waggy tailed friends too, meaning they’re guaranteed to have fun come rain or shine. For more information call 01209 842168 or visit www.actionpetz.com/actionpetz-cornwall-dog-day-care

Cornwall Council now classes holiday home waste as commercial waste, meaning it’s no longer dealt with by domestic waste carriers. To have it collected by the Council, holiday homeowners are now required to pay and sign into 12-month contracts, and while the Council does recommend a few other companies, their collection days unfortunately don’t always coincide with changeovers. With this in mind, Holiday Home Waste Collection Ltd introduced a personable collection service to suit individual holiday home owners, offering a unique service and clean bins when guests arrive, without a binding contract, whereby owners can call up at anytime should a callout or any assistance be required. The team offers collections on both the north and south coasts on different changeover days. The service includes the bags and removal of general waste,

as well as glass recycling (by Cornwall Cullet) – sending glass to Yorkshire where it’s used for making light bulbs. Other mixed dry recyclables are sold on, while non-recyclables are incinerated, producing green energy that gets sent straight to the electrical grid. But that’s not all – they recently introduced food recycling too, adding to the long list of services available. Jennifer and her family run team can help you on an ad hoc, or can quote for weekly collections over the course of the year, for properties of all sizes, ultimately ensuring your visitors are not greeted by rubbish bags and piles of recycling when they arrive for their holiday.

Leave your car behind and explore the beautiful local area from this ideal base, well within reach of the area’s many sights and attractions. The Rosemary is conveniently situated for university open days, graduations and term time visits. The South West Coast Path, hotel conference centres and Falmouth Wood Lane Campus are within walking distance, and it’s just a short drive to Tremough Campus in Penryn. Individually designed bedrooms have super king, double, twin or single beds, plus two family suites. Many rooms have glorious sea views across Falmouth Bay too, and include luxuries that you would normally expect in a larger hotel.

A stunning addition

to Lamorran

Start your day with a freshly prepared breakfast made from delicious local ingredients, after all, The Rosemary is recognised by the AA Good Breakfast Award 2019! If you’re looking for AA 4 Star Gold accommodation, be sure to book in at The Rosemary, Falmouth, where you’ll find the warmest welcomes and service that’s second to none. For more information call 01326 314 669 or visit www.therosemary.co.uk Matt Jessop

The guest reception rooms are relaxing and include a licensed bar. There is

seating throughout the lovely south facing garden looking out to sea, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the view with a cooling drink or cream tea.

Over the course of last winter, Philip Whear Windows & Conservatories were invited by Mr and Mrs Dudley-Cooke, owners of Lamorran House, to design and build an orangery sympathetic to the house and to blend with the beautiful gardens. Phil and his team embraced the challenge, completing both on time and in style! Being a sub-tropical Italianate inspired garden, the task was to complete an orangery that would create a quiet area in which to sit and admire Lamorran’s glorious vista, and also be used to complement the wedding venue. Great care was taken to ensure corrosionresistance from the elements – bearing in mind the Roseland peninsula’s exposure to them. Thermal efficiency was also a major consideration during the design, product selection and manufacture, which took place at Philip Whear’s Pool factory showroom. The finished product has been greatly admired by all who visit the beautiful Lamorran Garden, which is open to the public on Wednesdays and Fridays. urrounded as we are, on almost all sides, by the sea it’s not surprising that sailing is an inherent part of life in Cornwall – especially on the south coast with the port of Falmouth at its epicentre. Sailing, and in fact boats in all their forms, have always played a big part in my own life. Many a happy childhood day was spent with friends messing about in our little rowing boats off the beach at Cadgwith or joining my dad on one his many fishing trips, bringing home a haul of pollack for our tea. If we were really lucky, we would be able to grab a ride out on one of the bigger crabbers, and watch the pots come in filled with juicy crabs and lobsters. Those formative days on the water gave us a taste for adventure and independence, but also a healthy respect for the sea. When we progressed from rowing boats to sail boats, there was no such thing as ‘proper’ sailing tuition. In those days, we adopted a very ‘ eath obinson’ approach to our first taste of sail, pretty much teaching ourselves by trial, error and a lot of capsizing! As my own children reach the same age, they are now afforded the most fantastic opportunity to learn to sail, being taught the essential techniques by experienced instructors…and all for no cost.

n Helford River Children's Sailing Trust

n Helford River Children's Sailing Trust

The elford iver Children’s Sailing Trust (hrcst.org.uk), an RYA training centre and a member of RYA OnBoard, was set up in 2005. With an experienced team of adult volunteers, Senior Instructor, Martin Fenton and his team provided lessons for more than 850 local children last year aged between and . These children came from local primary schools, special schools, children excluded from education and, for the first time, a group of home educated children. The trust’s ethos is that there should be no financial barrier to any of their activities and by giving children and young adults in Cornwall access to sailing and other water activities, they can develop confidence, competence and resilience. We head to the Helford every Wednesday evening where Martin is a familiar, smiling face at each of the sailing sessions: “Our aim is to grow not only the sailor but the person. We tailor our sessions to the individual

It’s not always plain sailing though as Mike Comyn, Chief Instructor, explains: The environment we work in can be challenging in itself. We go out in all types of weather and sea states, varying the lesson to the conditions and finding a sheltered cove to operate from. By listening to instruction, within the safety net we create, a child is able to overcome basic fears. By doing so, he or she is given a belief in instruction. This belief and trust can then be transferred to the classroom, home and future work environment.” The elford iver is for all. If you are from a poor background in Cornwall you are very unlikely ever to experience the beauty of this wonderful place. We who work the estuary everyday, have no doubt about its impact on our lives and we love to share. We meet children who live less than 10 miles from the coast and yet have never been to the beach! They have no concept of its beauty or how to interact with the sea safely. Our job is to remove these barriers.” To help remove these barriers further the trust was delighted to announce earlier this year that it had been awarded a grant in excess of £1.6m that meant they could start work on an inland water sports centre at

Trevassack Lake. This disused quarry will enable year-round watersports for all as well incorporating adapted holiday lodge accommodation for children with severe disabilities. There will even be a floating classroom allowing young people of all abilities to get out on the water and view marine life through underwater cameras and onboard screens. You don’t have to be resident in Cornwall to take advantage of this amazing opportunity as the trust also offers holiday sailing courses for visiting children. It is grass-roots opportunities such as this that are helping to grow our budding sailors here in Cornwall. From here, children have gone on to captain super yachts in the Med, race in some of the world’s most prestigious yachting events or become sailing instructors themselves. It’s clear that discovering a love of the water at an early age in Cornwall opens many doors, and for some young people it has been the driving force to study marine related subjects at Falmouth Marine School (falmouthmarineschool.ac.uk).

With a school on the site dating back as far as 1825, tutors now combine industry experience with academic expertise to offer courses that include boatbuilding, marine engineering and science and alumni regularly secure prestigious jobs within the industry, both across the UK and beyond. Falmouth local, Ben Davis, secured the position of Wing Manager for Ben Ainslie’s America Cup team, thanks to his expertise in boat technology gained at Falmouth Marine School, while Tom Jackman, who is now working as a Chief Engineer on super yachts, is enjoying the career he always dreamed of while travelling the world. The marine science course has helped students progress to some of the most prestigious marine-based academic institutions, but also includes a range of non-academic practical skills that are often considered to be essential for progression. These range from diving, snorkeling and powerboat handling through to aquatic husbandry, photography and marine mammal observation. Former student, Clare Marshall, completed an FdSC in Marine Science at Falmouth Marine School and is now a Plankton Analyst for the Marine Biological Association: “Falmouth is the perfect location to study marine biology. With the River Fal and several beaches a stone’s throw away, it makes for the perfect outdoor classroom.”

BUYING A BOAT

Aerial Cornwall

If you’ve got the sailing bug and want to invest in your own boat then speak to the team at Ancasta International Boat Sales (ancasta.com) who have offices in Mylor and Falmouth.

So, what does all this mean for getting out on the water in Cornwall? For me, it’s essential that the next generation of budding sailors, water sports enthusiasts and marine students are inspired at a young age so that they can continue Cornwall’s sailing heritage and keep Falmouth and its world-renowned sailing waters firmly pinned on the chart. Without this infrastructure we wouldn’t retain the top-class boat builders, marine companies, marinas and yacht clubs that we see today. If you’ve not had the opportunity to learn to sail at a young age then are many other ways you can become involved. The Cornish Maritime Trust cornishmaritimetrust. org) is dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of Cornwall’s maritime heritage, operating three historic working boats – Barnabas, Soft Wing and Ellen – and training people in the associated skills of sailing, restoration and maintenance. Nonmembers are welcome to sail as a guest but the best way to experience these incredible boats and support the trust is to become a member. Whether you are an individual or an organisation, you can immerse yourself in days gone by in these historic 19th century sailing vessels. For a modern introduction to sail, or if you’re a novice seeking tuition, then Cornish Cruising, (cornishcruising.com) based at

n Constance

Falmouth’s Yacht Marina, offers a complete charter, cruising and training centre, with RYA courses available in sail, powerboat and motorboat. You can spend even more time aboard by booking a yacht charter holiday that will see you discovering Falmouth’s world-class sailing waters as well as the unspoilt creeks of the Helford. However, if hoisting a mainsail fills you with fear and an easy life is calling, then Gweek Classic Boatyard’s (gweekquay.co.uk) 50ft Victorian launch, Constance, affords 19th century luxury on the water. You can cruise the Helford in style while sipping on a glass of bubbles or taking afternoon tea, watching the water, bird and marine life pass by. Cornwall affords everyone the ability to get out on the water and celebrating sail is something we do very well here – if you’re a Cornish sailor or a visiting yachtsman then Cornwall’s annual sailing regattas and events are sure to be already in your diary. Blew Flowers

Mirri Damer Contemporary Jewellery

This Falmouth-based florist specialises in wedding, funeral and event flowers, and owner Charlie also runs workshops to make flower crowns for hen parties, birthdays and other events.

After years of working in the jewellery trade and on private commissions, award-winning goldsmith Mirri Damer opened her gallery on Falmouth’s High Street in 2015.

Cornwall has a wonderful selection of flowers so Charlie always aims to use those that are locally grown. What’s more, keeping her environmental footprint as low as possible is something of a passion for her, so all of her flowers and products used are foam free, recyclable or natural.

Using precious metals (all of which are recycled or fair trade) with beautiful gemstones, everything you see is designed and made right there in the workshop by Mirri and her team. Mirri’s designs are inspired by the weather-worn coastline, evoking perfect days spent on the beach. Bespoke commissions welcome.

WHAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF Do away with sleepless nights by finding the perfect bed for you, with help from the experts at Christie’s.

A

good night’s sleep is paramount when it comes to well being. Unfortunately, the vast majority of recent national studies conducted have concluded that us Brits just don't get enough of it! The importance of a new bed should not be underestimated. It can help you achieve significantly increased and better quality sleep as well as contribute to various other major health benefits, so it’s fair to say that choosing the right bed is key. Catching up with Peter Blell, owner of Christie’s Furniture and The Christie’s Bed Shop in Penryn, we ask him for his top tips when it comes to shopping for that super comfortable new bed.

The bigger the better “Make sure you think about the size of your room and what si e bed will fit, Peter suggests. “Bigger is better! Studies indicate that the average person wiggles 60 to 70 times per night, so the bigger the bed, the less likely you’ll be disturbed by your partner. Optimise your storage “Having up to four side drawers or a front or side opening ottoman takes up no more space, whilst providing excellent storage! First entering the English market during the late 18th century from the Ottoman Empire, nowadays, ottoman beds offer practical space without having to sacrifice on style.

ç LEFT Finding the right bed should be anything but stressful! ê BELOW Whatever your style and budget, Christie's can help

Christie’s have a fantastic range to suit any budget and style, including both leather and upholstered beds! Sharing is caring If you’re sharing your new bed then Peter suggests trying it out together. “You both need a supportive and comfortable bed to aid with improved sleep. If you both have different comfort preferences, perhaps consider a dual tension bed where one half is softer or firmer than the other. This way, you both get the firmness that you need. Comfort is key It may seem obvious, but choosing the right bed to provide comfort and support is essential to consistent quality sleep. But, as Peter puts it: “Everybody is different. This is why we have over 100 different beds on display, including the best award-winning models. We can also provide expert advice to ensure you get the support and comfort that s right for you. How does it look? Be sure that your new bed looks as good as it feels. “Couple up your mattress with either a divan bed base – available in hundreds of different fabrics, with or without a matching headboard – or a bed frame, also available in different fabrics, materials and styles. Your bed, your bedroom, your style! Stick to your budget Finally, Peter stresses the importance of staying within budget. “Our beds start from £49 and go all the way up to £5,999! Spend as much as you can afford for improved comfort and support, but stick to your budget. For more expert advice on choosing the right bed for you and to see the comprehensive display of furniture on offer, why not pencil in a visit to Christie’s Furniture and The Christie’s Bed Shop?

CONVERT

Enhance your energy saving by converting from fossil fuels to electric.

C

ornish Cooker Conversions is committed to providing the energy saving solution of converting existing range cookers from fossil fuels like oil, gas or solid fuel to electric. The purpose of the conversion is to make it more efficient by providing independent control of the hob and the oven, giving you the flexibility required to reduce running costs and allowing you to control when your hobs are on and when they’re not. This has led to the development of the Energiser ayburn conversion kit, which is presently on field trial. This innovative conversion kit is proving every bit as successful as the ElectricKit Aga conversion and has been designed to fit the majority of ayburn models. For more information on these services feel free to call the Cornish Cooker Conversions team and chat with one of the experienced members of staff or visit the website. The company is often contacted by ayburn owners who have either had major mechanical breakdowns or fuel issues which can’t be resolved. Such issues can lead to a ayburn being uneconomic to repair, especially because the parts are often difficult, if not impossible to source.

e hear from Cornish Cooker Conversions’ Alan Jackson, who tells us: “By converting to electric, we give your cooker a new lease of life, making it more economical and environmentally friendly, rather than scrapping it, disrupting the kitchen and buying a new cooker. It only takes a day to complete the work, which is done in situ – typically with little disruption to the kitchen. Converting your range to electric also means you will now use an alternative and more efficient means of heating water and/or radiators. You still have the ability to enjoy the warmth the ayburn emits into the kitchen with the benefit of being able to choose how much warmth you want and when. Follow Cornish Cooker Conversion on Facebook to see the projects that they’ve worked on.

B

eing an avid sailor, Mr Malindrinos has always been keen to play his part in combatting the global issue of plastic waste in the ocean, having seen its adverse effects first-hand. So, when he was looking to update the aesthetics of his home with a new resin-bound driveway, when he learned about Oltco’s new Recycle Bound resin solution made using waste plastic, it was an easy decision. The installation at Mr Malindrinos’ home in Mylor Bridge took just one day, meaning he could still access the property easily with minimal disruption. About the Recycle Bound solution, Oltco Co-Director Tom Stringer tells us ecycle Bound is an ideal solution for domestic properties. Being insoluble means it will not wear away with water, and it meets S DS Sustainable rban Drainage Systems regulations.” In this particular case, the project used the equivalent of 258,000 plastic straws in its installation. This perfectly complements the rest of Mr Malindrinos’ renovations, which include an air source heat pump and a roof covered in solar panels, providing his water

heating and electricity. What’s more, with a 20-year guarantee, the new driveway provides him with the peace of mind and confidence that it will last for years to come. “We are extremely pleased with our new Oltco Recycle Bound driveway,” Mr Malindrinos tells us, “and are delighted to be the first domestic customer in the world to use the team’s new recycled plastic product. “As sailors ourselves, using Recycle Bound was an obvious choice, having witnessed the devastation of plastic pollution in our marine environment.” He also remarks on the impressive craftsmanship displayed by the Oltco team, explaining: “We believe that Oltco is doing a great job in helping to tackle the issue of plastic pollution already circulating in our seas, and we’re proud to be part of their journey.”

SPOTLESS SERVICE We speak to Ilona Ziarko, who tells us all about her Cornish housekeeping business, Spotless Cleaning.

é ABOVE Your property is in safe hands with Ilona and her team

ABOVE All your laundry needs taken care of at Spotless Linen

O

n what inspired Ilona to take the leap and start her own business, she explains how it was driven strictly by potluck. Studying Journalism and PR at Falmouth University, having moved here from Poland, “I had no intention to stay. My tutors convinced me to stay another year to obtain a full English degree; I wasn’t sure about this decision, as my daughter, Alex, was only nine years old at that time and waiting for me at home in Poland with my parents.” But, when Ilona called her to broach the subject, Alex told her mother: “Mum, I would love to go there. Harry Potter and Hermione live in England.” So that was that! A few years later, when things weren’t quite panning out as Ilona had expected, she decided it was time for a change. “I remember that I read this sentence somewhere: ‘If you want to achieve something that you have not achieved before, you must be prepared to do things that you have not done before.’” Spotless Cleaning Cornwall currently has a core team of five, with a further 2 working as subcontractors. Ilona aims to grow but, as she puts it, “I am taking baby steps here as I do not want to promise things too quickly.” The company has a very clear vision: to be a modern, well-equipped cleaning and laundry firm in Cornwall, with an extremely professional and highly trained team. Indeed, through their experience and the demand in the market, Ilona and co. have

become very successful as specialists in holiday lets and second homes; clients who care about their properties, who need to feel that they’re in good hands. As well as a five star changeover clean – which includes safety, damage, light and heating checks – the team can provide quality Cornish hampers for your guests on arrival, as well as taking care of all your laundry needs via Spotless Linen – their own laundry unit which utilises brand new, modern Electrolux equipment. Ilona can also advise on how to turn your house into the perfect holiday let, from must have equipment and safety requirements, to interior design tips. This fully professional service – Spotless Design – fulfils the need for sound advice on interior design and equipment, an area that sees many holiday home owners falling short of the mark. “We can offer invaluable help here, leaving owners enough freedom to adopt their own vision of their perfect holiday let, with specialist advice and professional support.” So, if you’re a second home or holiday let owner looking to make the most of your property, it’s fair to say that Ilona and her team are well-qualified to help you do just that.

TOP INTERIOR TIPS Ilona's timeless advice is that less is more, so be sure to declutter. She also points out the importance of sustainability in the products you choose, which is a top trend this summer. To achieve a sustainable interior, Ilona suggests choosing items made from natural and sustainable materials, such as wood, rattan, seagrass, and sustainable cotton.

GET SHREDDED Dispose of your personal or business data responsibly with Britannia Lanes.

W

ith the introduction of GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) in 2017, how data and paperwork is handled and disposed of is at the forefront of everyone’s mind. Whether it’s your own documents at home, or how you dispose of your customers and client’s information as a business, it’s important you have total peace of mind that this is done securely. When it comes to home shredding, the number of documents that now need shredding for total personal security is at its highest level. The leading advice tells us that any envelope, letter or scrap of paper with a name, address or contact number needs to be disposed of securely, meaning our homes can often become cluttered with a ‘pile to shred.’ Most small household shredders simply cannot handle the amount of shredding produced by the average family home, which is why Britannia Lanes supply shredding sacks that are ideal for personal use. These can be collected from the Brittania Lanes office or delivered to you. The sacks are easy to use and you can fill them up as you go, making unsightly paperwork piles a thing of the past. The bags can be dropped back to your closest depot when you’re next passing, or if you have filled five bags or over they will be collected from you at no additional charge.

For total peace of mind you can then use the individual tag number with your postcode to track your bags’ progress online and receive a destruction certificate once they’ve been shredded. For businesses, disposing of any data you may produce such as printed emails, files and written notes containing customers’ and clients’ information in a safe and trustworthy manner has never been more important, with hefty fines for any company found not to be doing this. For business customers, as well as offering shredding sacks, there are also secure lockable consoles, which allow anyone in your office to securely deposit documents into the console without being able to regain access to them. Shredding services not only give you confidence that your documents are being destroyed securely, it also means you can rest assured that you’re doing your bit for the environment as the paperwork Britainia Lanes shred is 100% recycled.

| STAY Marine Cottage, Falmouth Marine Cottage is arguably one of Falmouth’s most beautifully refurbished holiday homes. A two-year restoration plan in partnership with The Cornwall Heritage and Conservation Authority has ensured that discrete modern touches blend with the home’s authentic, original character. The team behind the interiors work internationally, giving the property a ‘travelling collector’ vibe, true to the nature of the captains and seafarers that have lived here in the past. Plaster and coral tones, offset with aquas and sea grass wall coverings, provide a backdrop for deep sofas, seashell plaster sconce lighting and columned fire surrounds. Marine Cottage features touches of luxury that really set it apart in today’s holiday home market, from the hidden T to the hand cut and laid mosaic ‘fish scale’ marble floor. The bedrooms are well planned too; the navy striped Captain’s Room to the rear boasts a luxury king size bed, plus magnificent views of the harbour and Falmouth’s sailing waters. The upper floors provide staggering views to the open waters of the Carrick Roads and onto Flushing, St Mawes and Pendennis Castle, and the fabulous terrace is just perfect for a spot of al fresco dining in the Cornish summer sun. STAY | An Skiber, Constantine Down a quiet lane on the edge of the pretty village of Constantine in south Cornwall, sits An Skiber, a beautiful barn conversion surrounded by its own private garden. Constantine itself is on the edge of the Helford’s breathtaking Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and only minutes from the enchanting Helford river. Studded with quiet creeks, the river is home to a multitude of sailing clubs, kayak and small boat hire, with plenty of fishing spots for catching your supper. The area is also famed for its sub-tropical gardens, including Trebah and Glendurgan, where plants usually found in warmer climates thrive. An Skiber’s garden shares the same inspiration, with spring bringing dashes of colour from azalea, rhododendron and camellia, whilst summer is heralded by the flourishing of the ama ing Chilean fire bush, gunnera and soothing tree ferns. What’s more, clever use of reverse levels mean that the sun-trap garden is easy to access, whether you’re upstairs or down. Inside, the barn has been sensitively transformed, providing easy-going accommodation for six across three bedrooms. The open-plan living area invites relaxation, leading to a rooftop terrace which is just the spot for a bottle of something chilled beneath the evening sun. It’s perfect for a spot of al fresco dining too, especially thanks to the generous kitchen, which, boasting an Aga as well as conventional cooking facilities, has everything a budding chef needs to cook up a storm.

| STAY Miss Fishers, Port Isaac Just five minutes’ walk from the centre of Port Isaac, Miss Fishers is a dog-friendly cottage that sleeps up to four people in two bedrooms and has been beautifully renovated with plenty of lovely touches. A shepherd’s hut in the garden acts as a separate summerhouse, with plenty of seating for everyone, and there’s even a fire pit in the garden to keep you warm as the sun goes down. You’ll find an iPad in the kitchen that’s pre-programmed with lots of useful information for guests, including suggestions for days out and recipes for cosy nights in. A complimentary starter pack will be awaiting you on your arrival too, containing coffee, tea, milk, bread, butter, cheese, cake and a bottle of wine. New Road, where Miss Fishers is located, is easy to access and the Platt (harbour) is only a four-minute walk away. Port Isaac is a historic fishing village situated on the north Cornwall coastline with lovely fishermen’s cottages and narrow streets, the most famous being 'Squeezy Belly Alley', said to be the narrowest street in the world! Miss Fishers is within walking distance of the beach; try coasteering, stand up paddle boarding, surfing, kayaking or walks on the stunning coastal path.

Porthcurno This stunning, private retreat near the golden sands and sub-tropical waters of Porthcurno is available for exclusive hire, with its own six person hot tub, a children’s play area, barbeque, sun loungers, plus astounding sea views. It’s the perfect spot for a small group hoping to enjoy some time together beneath the Cornish summer sun with a spot of al fresco dining and, just maybe, a bottle or two of something chilled. Owners Jason and Lisa are rated on Airbnb as 'Superhosts', which, if you’re unfamiliar with the platform, means they’re highly rated and absolutely committed to providing great stays for their guests. The guesthouse is rated ‘Sparkling Clean’ too, based on consistent feedback from recent guests. Inside, as well as the usual mod cons that the modern self-catering guest has come to expect, including WiFi, washing facilities and air-conditioning (especially welcome when temperatures soar like last summer!), there’s also a cosy fireplace, perfect for when the temperatures drop off in the evening. Being exquisitely quiet and private, at times, the only people you’re likely to see are the local farmer or the owners. The house sits within the grounds of an 1849 granite farmhouse with the sea a mere kilometre away – it really is a wonderful location.

F

or many years Padstow has been a hotspot for foodies, families and those looking for an authentic Cornish break. It’s the perfect location for a Harbour Hotel – a brand that already has a portfolio of stunning four and five-star hotels across the south of England. After acquiring it in the autumn of 2018, the hotel has undergone a transformational renovation, reconfiguring the public spaces, fully refurbishing all bedrooms and injecting the Harbour personality with vibrant design and excellent service.

Food and drink For those looking to sample the delights of foodie Padstow, the hotel’s Kitchen, Bar Terrace offers casual, all-day dining, all with those enviable harbour views. The menu has been designed by John Pollard, who joined the Harbour Group having worked in renowned kitchens such

as J Sheekey, Scotts of Mayfair, and the ivington Gill. In 2 , John spearheaded the Pizza East opening in Shoreditch for the Soho ouse group, revolutionising the food scene in east London with simple food, high-end ingredients and perfect execution. In 2012 he took his brand of farm to fork menus to Soho House Berlin, helping to drive the food revolution in Germany. On returning to the UK he then developed Chicken Shop and Dirty Burger brands for Soho House Group, helping to roll out the concept throughout London. Now at Harbour, John and his team advocate locally grown produce, farm raised, wild-caught seafood and farm assured meats, to expertly make traditional favourites and modern classics, all with a contemporary twist. You’ll find the food at Harbour Kitchen, Bar & Terrace light, seasonal and locally sourced to showcase the region’s finest flavours. The menu features many of Harbour Hotel’s signature dishes, including the Harbour

A CLIFFTOP Sea Cliff Cottage – a character-filled holiday let that has recently undergone a dramatic makeover with fantastic results. ABOVE There are more than a few touches of luxury to enjoy here...

S

ea Cliff Cottage was previously a four bedroom property but after speaking with the team at Cornish Cottage Holidays, owner Marie took a bold leap of faith and transformed the property into an even more luxurious coastal bolthole for her guests to enjoy. The changes included turning one bedroom into a plush bathroom with walk-in shower and roll top bath, while the other became the ultimate for movie fans; a state of the art cinema room with gourmet popcorn, Netflix and a quirky gin station. At the front of the property there is a charming stone veranda which affords dramatic sunset views across Pentewan Valley, below which is a sunken dining area with a large wooden dining table and gas barbeque to enjoy leisurely al fresco meals. Climb the steps to the rear terraced gardens and you’ll find additional dining space with a barbeque and, further up still, a wood-fired hot tub in which to soak and enjoy a glass of bubbles. During the day, why not simply relax on rocking sun loungers – a great way to while away sunny afternoons. Owner Marie tells us At first, going from four bedrooms to two felt counter intuitive but once I thought about the advice, I was

fully committed. The changes I’ve made make me smile and the icing on the cake is that, since it was relisted, the bookings have started pinging through!” The first guests since the work was completed were a young couple who used the house as their base for their wedding next door at Pentewan Church. “The bride used Sea Cliff Cottage as the base for herself and bridesmaids to stay and get ready pre-wedding. After the wedding her and her new husband stayed on for two nights before flying off to Europe. I was over the moon that they enjoyed it for such a special romantic occasion.” Just a short stroll from the white sands of Pentewan beach, Sea Cliff Cottage has been transformed to blend into the beautiful original architecture with a stylish, fresh look. Cornish Cottage Holidays offer a wide variety of unique and stylish properties just like this – make sure to visit the website for more information.

SELLING YOUR

DWELLING?

Discover Trigva’s fresh approach to marketing and selling your Cornish property.

W

ith a Cornish team who’re proud of their roots, Trigva (which means ‘abode’ or ‘dwelling’ in Cornish) is a young start-up company based in the north Cornish coastal town of Rock. We catch up with company founder, Sam Williams, to find out more about his passion for Cornish property. Sam’s drive for marketing and selling property is matched only by his love for this beautiful part of the world, “which I have been doing for a number of years now,” he explains. “What I deliver, alongside experience of the north Cornish property market, is a unique energy and a modern approach. No fussy suits, shiny shoes or shady strategies; just switched-on sales techniques and an ability to build relationships with clients.” Sam is a firm believer that people buy from people. “Making personal connections really is one of the most rewarding parts of the job for me. I want to change people’s perceptions of estate agents and make selling property a stress-free experience. “Honesty and trust are two of the most important values for me,” Sam elaborates, “and are absolutely inherent to how we do business at Trigva. This is why we’re always upfront about what we charge, and don’t

shy away from clearly disclosing our fees and terms. For instance, to sell with us, we ask for a £260 upfront payment to launch the property, then just 1% when the property sells. And, as we are a brand new company, there is no VAT to pay!” Sam shows us to his first instruction – an extremely stylish, versatile and spacious property nestled within the charming Cornish hamlet of Tredrizzick. Within close proximity to popular north Cornwall hotspots such as Rock, Daymer Bay and Polzeath, Sam tells us: “The current vendors make the most of the space by holiday letting part of the property, which comprises two bedrooms and a trendy open-plan living space.” The main accommodation comprises four en-suite bedrooms, including a master with its own balcony, plus a gorgeous open-plan kitchen/diner and a cosy snug room. Meadows is available now at a guide price of £925,000 and a viewing comes highly recommended. Interested? Why not contact Sam and the team and see for yourself what sets the Trigva experience apart?

Get to know the cobbled streets and picturepostcard beaches of St Ives like a local.

DISCOVER MORE On the other side of the Hayle river, at low tide, you’ll find three miles of sand stretching all the way to Godrevy Lighthouse, popular with families and water sports enthusiasts alike.

f you’ve ever visited St Ives, you’ll already know that much of the town’s historical charm remains in the granite cottages and the labyrinth of lanes and alleys known as ‘Downalong’, where around each corner can be found a hidden treasure, a gallery, potter’s yard, theatre or café. The town is surrounded by incredible beaches too, each with a character of its own. The three main beaches here were all awarded Blue Flag status in 2017 for their cleanliness and facilities, and many benefit from the watchful eyes of lifeguards during the holiday season. Taking a tour of these golden sands, Porthmeor faces the Atlantic ocean and is the most popular beach, especially with surfers and bodyboarders. It’s also home to St Ives Surf School and the popular Porthmeor Beach Café. ead east and you’ll find Porthgwidden; smaller than the main beaches, there is a lovely atmosphere here with all the facilities you need for a good old-fashioned family day out. And if you like Porthgwidden, you’ll love Bamaluz! This very small beach is mostly rocks, but as the tide goes out, it reveals a sandy beach located in the middle of the town. It’s popular with dog owners too, being dog friendly all year round! The harbour beach has areas that are family friendly due to their access to the town’s shops and cafés. At low tide, the sands continue onto Lambath Walk, located just

behind the Lifeboat Station. Continue along Lambath Walk and The Warren and you’ll come to Porthminster, another large beach protected from the surf. The beach retains a slightly Victorian feel, with the architecture of the cafés and restaurants, yet it boasts everything the modern beach goer could ask for, including kayak and SUP hire – perfect for making the most of the calm blue waters. As you leave St Ives, you’ll come to Carbis Bay, home to another sweeping stretch of sand that's perfect for families, and with all the facilities you need for an all-day stay. Continue around the bay and you’ll find Porthkidney – a vast expanse of sand that can stretch out nearly a mile at low tides, and which is dog friendly all year round! There’s so much more to discover in this beautiful pocket of coastal Cornwall. If you’re looking for the perfect base from which to explore it all, St Ives Holidays may just be what you’re looking for. With over 240 hand picked holiday cottages, solely situated in and around St Ives, you’ll be spoilt for choice!

Y

ou’d probably assume that, as one of only a handful of England’s holiday parks to achieve a prestigious Visit England 5 Star Gold and an AA Pennant Platinum rating, Hendra Holiday Park near Newquay would be content, but this family owned park will never rest on its laurels! Situated in 80 acres of countryside minutes from Newquay’s golden sand beaches, Hendra plays host to up to 4,000 guests every night during peak summer months and 2019 looks likely to be another good year. “We’re delighted to continue being included among the elite of English holiday parks inspected by Visit England, not least because quality plays such a big part in awards,” says Director Jon Hyatt. “Guests are actively seeking excellent hospitality, and that is our greatest strength, mainly due to the hard work and dedication of our team,” Jon continues. “Many of our guests are repeat visitors and that suggests we’re getting it right. This is also a result of continuous investment too – over £1.5 million in the last twelve months alone, with constant attention to guest feedback.” Jon also points out that in peak season, Hendra employs around 250 staff, and the £16 million-plus spent annually in the local area by guests benefits other businesses, making a substantial contribution to the local economy. Not only are there award-winning touring and camping pitches, there’s also a choice of spacious top-of-the-range holiday homes too, including those with home-from-home luxuries like king-size beds, en suites and outside decks, all at the very best quality standards visitors would expect from one of Cornwall’s premier accommodation providers. Facilities include the spectacular Oasis fun pools, an indoor play centre, restaurant, caf , pi eria, fish and chip takeaway, entertainment venue, amusements, playgrounds and even its own supermarket!

Guests seeking a quality stay and activity experience can be assured that a holiday at Hendra will be ‘green’ too! Hendra’s ten-acre solar farm supplies the park with most of its energy and the park has achieved major tourism and business awards for sustainability, making it one of Cornwall’s top environmentally friendly resort destinations.

IN THE WORLD When time is of the essence, Patek Philippe’s World Time watches are at the very pinnacle of class and functionality.

W

orld Time watches are more important than ever in our globally networked lives. e fly around the world, have online conversations with people on the other side of it, pursue international trade relations and share ideas on a global scale. So it’s good to know the time in the places to which we are travelling, or those where the people we’re communicating with live. Patek Philippe orld Time watches fulfil this function in an exemplary way: they show all 24 world time zones at a glance. The local time is most prominently displayed, in the classic manner with the hour and minute hands. For the other 23, the times are directly readable on the 24-hour ring that rotates counter clockwise within the city disk. The minutes indicated by the minute hand are the same for all time zones. Patek Philippe owes this ingenious functionality to an invention in the 1930s by Genevan watchmaker Louis Cottier. The mechanism was later refined and patented by Patek Philippe. Changing to a different time zone is made easy with a World Time watch – literally at a few clicks of a button – and the time in all 24 zones is always displayed with the precision specified by the directives of the Patek Philippe seal. An excellent example is the Men’s World Time Reference 5230G. This famed World Time watch is highly coveted among

frequent flyers and collectors, and has been carefully realised with a white-gold case, a pierced hour hand that reflects the exclusive Patek Philippe style, as well as a manually engraved dial centre with a motif inspired by a historic model in the Patek Philippe Museum’s collection. In 1997, this world-renowned brand enriched its portfolio of useful complications by launching a new movement with two time zones – the Calatrava Travel Time. This ingenious system allows the local hour hand to be moved backwards or forwards, an hour at a time. The feminine interpretation of the Calatrava Pilot Travel Time, the Reference 7234R, combines a rose gold case with a brown dial and subtle black gradation toward the periphery. Along with its dashing aeronautical style and second time zone display, this stunning piece is also the first self-winding Travel Time model in Patek Philippe’s collection for women. To learn more about these fabulous collections and watches, be sure to visit Patek Philippe’s authorised retailer, Michael Spiers.

or Silver Origins, living and working by the sea in west Cornwall has profoundly inspired and influenced the style and design process, with unique silver jewellery collections that capture the essence of Cornwall, its spectacular scenery, breathtaking natural beauty and lifestyle of our coastal communities. Silver Origins is a family run, independent jewellery brand that began in 2. Today, three generations of family members run the business along with dedicated staff who all play a key role in a common endeavour to create a successful jewellery brand. Specialising in sterling silver, a timeless precious metal with intrinsic value and beauty combined, all jewellery is designed in-house and headed by Creative Director, Marcus Price, who was born and grew-up in west Cornwall and developed a strong affinity for the ocean and coastline having been a keen surfer and diver since childhood. Salt water is in the blood as his father, Tony Price, founder of the company, was one of the first commercial divers in Cornwall back in the early sixties, and a keen long-board surfer. New designs and ideas start out as a simple pencil sketch with the original moulds hand carved out of wax to achieve the natural organic shapes and textures. Silver is then cast using the lost wax method, sanded, polished and the stones are then set by highly skilled

silversmiths. Everything is made by hand with attention to detail and quality, so that every design maintains the Silver Origins signature look and feel. It’s so rewarding to create original and tactile handcrafted jewellery with fresh and exciting seasonal collections launching throughout the year and mid season, Marcus tells us. The collections evolve from the iconic backdrop of Cornwall’s sub-tropical gardens and wildlife, rugged beaches, coastline and sea life – together with its rich Celtic heritage. This truly dramatic setting provides endless visual inspiration. Natural organic shapes, sculptured and weathered rock formations, pebbles and shells found beachcombing on the tideline, rockpools teeming with life and ocean waves pounding our shores. A piece of Silver Origins jewellery has a connection to something meaningful and intrinsically beautiful. Many designs feature semi–precious gemstones, contrasting textures and gold vermeil to enhance the spirit and story of each piece. Silver Origins designs are elegant in their simplicity and minimalism, demonstrating that, often, less is more. Each collection is unique with designs to suit everyone, from the fun and whimsical to the eternally romantic, celebrating love and life moments. All collections are available in-store or online. Silver Origins has two jewellery

STARING DOWN THE BARREL We catch up with Mike Lacey and discover his drive to immerse himself, camera in hand, into Cornwall’s most powerful waves. ABOVE é Mike searching for his next piece of water magic INSET Visit either the Falmouth or Porthleven gallery and immerse yourself in the waves

W

orking in the waves for a living, according Mike Lacey, founder of Waves Surf Art Gallery, is a strange concept and not one that’s easy to explain, “but throwing on a wetsuit, grabbing the camera and swimming out, there are scarce few things that can make me feel more at home.” Not only does being out in the surf excite Mike; the images he’s yet to capture – the search for that next piece of water magic – makes it all doubly exhilarating. “That’s what keeps me motivated to get out there.” During the winter months, Mike immerses himself in the biggest waves. “The adrenaline gets going and the nerves kick in, but that’s when I start to break down the shots and concentrate on how I can portray it in an image, how I can convey the danger and excitement.” Most of the time, Mike tells us, he just has to get stuck in, getting into the critical parts of the wave itself. “Just to get the perspective and element of danger, sometimes I have to take the risk and get as close to the tube as possible, take the hit and just hope I don’t get taken with it when it breaks!” It’s fair to say that there’s nothing quite like seeing it go from my camera to the

wall in the gallery; the life size impact you get from it is just incredible. “I can relive that very moment, Mike reflects, just as if I was back there taking it, another piece of an ocean jigsaw that I’m always trying to complete.” Sharing these moments with everyone is an amazing feeling for Mike, and he loves telling gallery visitors about them. “People have a genuine interest in how it’s achieved and always ask about my cameras and techniques, and where’s next. I have my favourite beaches to shoot at, but to be honest, I feel spoilt here in Cornwall. All of the beaches are just so stunning and having the opportunity to capture their beauty is a real honour and privilege. e finishes “Thank you Cornwall.”

Bringing together IMS Prussia Cove, Tim Boulton, Tim Dean, Penlee Theatre, The Acorn and Exchange Penzance, this new festival is supported by Penzance BID and hopes to become an annual highlight! Penzance has been synonymous with the arts over the centuries, with a history of nurturing innovators and creative talent. Thanks to its stunning coastal backdrop, beautiful architecture and maritime history, it provides the perfect setting for a celebration of the arts. There are events in venues across Penzance, including St Mary’s Church, Penlee Theatre, The Acorn Theatre and St John’s Hall, with a line-up of international stars including IMS Prussia Cove, who are renowned for understanding the fruitful relationship between nature and music, and the inspiration that this part of Cornwall can offer to both artists and audiences. Many of the world’s leading soloists have attended IMS’ seminars and acknowledge how much their playing owes to the magical influence of time spent in Cornwall, and former students and participants of the seminars can be found among the leaders of some of the world’s greatest orchestras! This year’s productions include Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, Debussy’s

Estampes, Haydn String Quartet’s Op. 77 No. 1, and Thomas Ades’ The Four Quarters. Highlights of a strong recital programme include Susan Tomes, Charles Owen and Dominic Degavino, plus the Castalian and John Law Quartets. If this sounds like your idea of a festival heaven, you’ll be pleased to know that Penzance is home to a superb selection stays, so you can pick the perfect base from which to enjoy all FestWest PZ has to offer. Whether your taste demands a luxury guesthouse, a self-catering cottage, countryside bed and breakfast or a boutique hotel, you’re well catered for here. And, when it comes to sating that inevitable sea-air appetite, Penzance has been described as ‘Cornwall’s new foodie capital’. Indeed, it’s become well known for superb food and drink, hiding some of the region’s most exciting pubs and restaurants in tucked-away locations along its historic streets. Tickets, which are available from £9, with concessions available for those under 25, can be purchased online or from the Box Office at The Minack Theatre. For more information about this exciting new festival, be sure to visit the website.

Tuck into summer with a trip to the Lemon Arms.

M ABOVE é Feeling peckish? BELOW ê î Pop in and take a pew – you never know what you'll find on the specials board!

anaged by Jonny and Sam Pearce, with over 20 years’ experience of running Cornish pubs and restaurants, the Lemon Arms at Mylor Bridge is the perfect pit stop for a glass of something chilled, especially with its dog friendly beer garden now in full bloom. The area is replete with beautiful walks and is home to a thriving sailing scene, so when the sun’s out, nothing beats taking a stroll around the creek and watching the world on the water go by. If you’re feeling peckish then the Lemon Arms has just the thing to sate that salty-air appetite, with new Head Chef, Freddie, bringing a delightful blend of seasonal Cornish flavours to the menu. The whole team has a passion for Cornwall’s bountiful produce and, because nobody can ever predict what the local day boats are going to land, the specials menu is always changing. The whole menu is created fresh and in-house, drawing on the best local and seasonal produce, while an award-winning range of Cornish beers and spirits from

St Austell Brewery means you can’t fail to find the perfect tipple to wash down your choice of dish. Finally, it doesn’t seem to matter what the weather’s doing, when Sunday rolls around, we Brits love a good old-fashioned roast. Jonny, Sam and the team know this, providing guests with a delicious all-thetrimmings experience, so if you could use a proper Sunday roast to round off your weekend, you know where to go! Whether you’re looking for a quick pint in the beer garden during your tour of the coast, or hoping to sample the morning’s catch from the pub’s ever-changing specials, take it from us, the Lemon Arms is well worth adding to your summer itinerary.

The team offer a range of meat-free dishes, which keep saturated fat low, and while there are, of course, the big marinated meat dishes, all in all, the input of seafood on Xen’s menu swings it firmly into the healthy category. And that’s not all! Xen’s dishes utilise fermented and traditionally prepared vegetables in large quantities, which contain healthy bacteria that’s believed to boost your immune system. It also delves into the cruciferous family of cabbages and radishes – known for their anti-cancerous properties – and let’s not forget all the garlic and chilli peppers! A WALK

e m i t h g u o r th Step through the unassuming doors of the Museum of Cornish Life for a truly breathtaking surprise!

é ABOVE Discover the many and varied exhibitions on display at this fabulous Cornish museum

I

f you're out and about exploring Cornwall and are looking for the perfect all-weather attraction to entertain everybody, in the market town of elston, you’ll find the Museum of Cornish Life, offering a fascinating insight into the area’s rich tapestry of history and heritage. The building was originally designed as the town’s market house in 1837, with two separate buildings – one for butter and eggs, the other for the meat market. Today, it retains the original sloping floor, which adds to the authenticity of experience as you wander back in time to the Cornish days of yore. In front of the museum is a cannon, salvaged from the wreck of the frigate HMS Anson, which foundered off Loe Bar in 1807. Around 100 sailors’ lives were lost in the disaster, inspiring Henry Trengrouse to invent the ‘Rocket’ lifesaving apparatus, which can be found inside the museum. Head inside and you’ll immediately find that the museum contains a vast social history collection. Dating from the 18th to the 20th century, the range of objects covers agriculture, local trades and industries, as well as law and order,

town history, home life, toys, sporting equipment, gardening, transport and health and leisure activities. Indeed, the sporting display features the famous Bob Fitzsimmons who, heralding from Helston, made boxing history as the sport’s first three-division world champion. The Victorian Classroom, meanwhile, provides a fascinating (and, indeed, eye opening!) insight for children, to see what life was like for pupils all those years ago. The museum boasts the best costume collections of the south west, also offering a regular programme of temporary exhibitions, meaning that there’s usually something new to be found every time you visit. ith a team that firmly believes in learning as a life-long process, if you're hoping to brush up on your Cornish history, a trip to elston’s Museum of Cornish Life comes highly recommended.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! 2019 marks 30 years since Bodmin & Wenford Railway was granted its light railway order, and what a year it’s having in celebration! é ABOVE Step back in time to a bygone era, with experiences to delight kids and adults alike

JOURNEY BACK IN TIME Expect delicious Cornish fare in a delightfully different setting. Dine in First Class as you travel towards the Glynn Valley and out along the Camel Trail.

T

o celebrate years of steaming passengers down the line and back in time, alongside their regular programme of activity and special events, the Bodmin & Wenford team have been sharing the fascinating history of the railway and some exclusive promotions via social media, so be sure to follow them! So what’s the railway’s secret to success? Perhaps more than anything else, Hannah Irwin, the railway’s Visitor, Events and Marketing Manager, tells us: “Volunteering. The railway is run by a dedicated, passionate team of volunteers who keep us on track.” From behind the scenes in the engine sheds and workshop, to the driver and fireman on the footplate, or the person who sells you your ticket in the booking office or on the train, Hannah explains, “we couldn’t do it without them. If you’re looking for a rewarding opportunity with a friendly and enthusiastic team, then volunteering with Bodmin enford ailway could well be for you! It isn’t just the anniversary celebrations that have got the Bodmin & Wenford crew excited. In fact, having secured funding from Great Western Railway and Cornwall Council, they recently announced plans for a second platform at Bodmin General! But it’s not yet

full steam ahead – the railway now needs to raise the additional funds to make the project a reality. To find out more about the platform and the fundraising campaign, be sure to visit the Bodmin enford website. As if all of this wasn’t enough, Hannah tells us that the railway is delighted to be welcoming The Gruffalo on 28th and 29th September, who’ll be strolling out of the deep dark wood to meet passengers at intervals throughout both days. Just one of the many events in the railway’s calendar, in addition to a journey on a steam train, there’ll be plenty to entertain families as they explore the railway and partake in activities inspired by Julia Donaldson’s world-renowned children’s book. There’s so much going on at Bodmin & Wenford Railway throughout the year, with experiences for kids and grown-ups alike. So if you’re looking for a day out with a difference be sure to visit the website. Better still, why not pencil in a trip to your summer calendar?

LET THERE BE Mr Patwardhan tells us about the different options available at Duchy Hospital when it comes to cataract surgery.

sight

he human eye works like a camera. It has a natural lens that allows images to focus on the retina. This lens is transparent until it turns cloudy and develops opacity – otherwise known as a cataract. This is most commonly caused by age-related changes to the lens. Occasionally, cataracts can develop at a much younger age due to the use of steroid, injury to the eye or metabolic disorders. Modern cataract surgery is a very sophisticated procedure performed by highly trained and skilled Ophthalmic Surgeons using technologically advanced equipment. The procedure takes 15-20 minutes under local anaesthetic, requires no stitches and no hospital stay. The surgeon, using a phacoemulsification machine, breaks the lens in the eye and sucks it out. An acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) is then inserted in its place. This restores clear eyesight. According to Mr Patwardhan, standard IOL, also known as monofocal lens, gives clear focus at a fixed distance. So, if the clear focus is for far distance, the person will need glasses to read books or work on the computer. Premium IOLs, however, are specially designed to provide spectacle free vision. These lenses are not routinely available on the NHS. Multifocal IOLs provide focus at all distances and Toric IOLs correct astigmatism.

Multifocal IOLs enable clear near, intermediate and distance vision without the need for glasses. The ‘Bifocal’ lenses are designed to give two distinct areas of clear vision, near and far. The new ‘Trifocal’ technology, available through Duchy Hospital, gives an additional area of clear vision for intermediate distance, for instance a computer screen. The technology, which uses Extended Depth of Focus, allows smooth transition of vision from distance to near but offers less clear vision for near-sight than the Bifocal or Trifocal technology. Mr Patwardhan continues: “Toric IOLs are designed to correct astigmatism, which where a person’s cornea is shaped more like the side of a rugby ball than a football. This can be corrected by inserting a Toric IOL in the eye, instead of needing to wear glasses.” There is a right IOL for everyone, be it standard or premium. Consultation at Duchy Hospital offers the opportunity to ascertain which IOL is suitable for an individual based on their eye examination, lifestyle and expectations.

A DAY OUT WITH Ever wondered what it takes to respond to some of the world's worst natural disasters?

G

a difference

oogle ‘disaster relief visitor centre’ and you might be surprised to learn that the only one in Europe is in Truro. Step into one of Cornwall’s most unique visitor attractions and you’ll enter the fascinating world of ShelterBox, an international relief charity that responds to natural disasters. Free to enter, this really is a day out with a difference that will leave you feeling inspired. But what is a disaster relief visitor centre all about? “It’s hard to describe what a disaster relief visitor centre is, but it’s not like a museum,” says Andy Bramwell, who runs the centre. “We don’t talk about the past, we talk about where we are responding now, and how the aid items we send can create a future for people who have survived disasters.” Since its birth in Helston 19 years ago, Cornish charity ShelterBox have responded to earthquakes, flooding, drought, storms and conflict all over the world, helping over .5 million people get their lives back to normal. Its visitor centre showcases some of the aid items it provides like tents, solar lanterns and water filters, while interactive displays and exhibits explain how it decides where to respond and show the positive impact a simple item can have for a family who’ve lost everything after a disaster. “It’s interactive, thought provoking, family friendly and educational all at the same time and our visitors have been overwhelmingly positive” says Andy. “We’re only a small attraction, but I can guarantee your visit will be time well spent. Our work, the people

we meet, the problems we have to solve and the stories we encounter are endlessly fascinating.” If you love talking about the weather then you’ll feel at home in this summer’s new exhibition ‘Hurricanes, Cyclones and Typhoons’. You’ll find out about the science behind how and where they are formed, learn about the effects of devastating winds, storm surges, and flooding, and hear about the storms ShelterBox has responded to. Your family can tackle the Hurricane Challenge Trail, have a go at packing a ShelterBox and explore the family friendly Weather Lab, where budding meteorologists can have a go at making lightning, thunder and tornadoes.

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES? Cornwall Hospice Care’s ‘It’s A Knockout’ returns é ABOVE Battle it out at this year's 'It's a Knockout' event!

F

irst shown on the BBC back in the 1960s, It’s a Knockout was a game show where teams of people competed in entertaining and funny games, often using bouncy castle-type obstacles. Now, nearly 60 years on, teams of up to ten can once again compete in a bid to be crowned overall winner and ‘Knockout Champion’, all while raising funds for Cornwall Hospice Care! Last year, when the Cornish charity first offered its exciting ‘It’s A Knockout’ day, over 30 teams battled the most torrential rain, but still managed to raise over £17,000 for the care of those terminally ill in Cornwall.

Unsurprisingly, the team are delighted to be holding it again! While no guarantees are made about the weather, Cornwall Hospice Care guarantees fun all round. In the morning the games will be dry, but expect to get wet in the afternoon; think wet bouncy castle slides and obstacle courses, all making for some superb spectator sport! The event could be described as a ‘school sports day for adults’, ideal for a group of friends or a team-building exercise for companies wishing to join in. There will also be stalls selling food and refreshments, and the charity encourages all those who enter to bring family and friends along to cheer the participants on, as there’ll be something for everyone to enjoy. Set to take place on Sunday 1st September, registration is just £50 per team, with £300 per team to be raised in addition. Teams are for up to ten people, so you can take part for as little as £35 per person. You need to be 16 years of age to take part. To register your team or to find out more, visit Cornwall Hospice Care and search ‘It’s A Knockout’, or give the team a call. Will you be the next ‘It’s A Knockout’ champion?
