Holiday home tips In an ongoing series of holiday home tips, we hear from George at Cornish Traditional Cottages about how to treat your holiday home guests. Once your property is ‘out there’, George explains, “enquiries should start to come in. Although not all of them will result in a booking, you should treat them all as potential guests. This means responding professionally and promptly – always aim for a maximum of a few hours, same day if you can. Go that extra mile by offering extra information, or try to accommodate people by suggesting alternative arrangements if your property can’t cater for them on their chosen dates.” One top tip George offers is that holidaymakers may enquire about several properties at once, so the quicker you respond, the more likely you are to secure the booking! A key moment in your guests’ experience is when they arrive. “You may like to organise a personal meet-and-greet for your guests. This gives you the chance to get to know your guests, introduce them to your Cornish holiday home and answer any questions in person. If this isn’t practical or desirable (some guests prefer to let themselves in), make sure you have provided clear instructions on getting the key, and make the process as simple as possible.”

have lived in Cornwall all my life and it never ceases to amaze me that after all these years m still finding new, undisco ered places. And so it is when I set off to discover the Cider arn, a uni ue, eco retreat nestled deep in the ornish countryside, yet only a -minute walk from the beach. lo e the anticipation and journey to a new place and this promises to be a great one y route takes me through ar and then out on the winding road that leads on to owey. owe er, m not destined for this well-known ornish harbour, as a hidden turn off takes me down a pri ate country lane and the further dri e, deeper into the lush ornish landscape, the more am certain this is going to be a wonderful disco ery. y destination is the ider arn, an exclusi e holiday property, sleeping , which has been lo ingly restored and beautifully decorated by owners raham and eather. t the end of the lane a large gate opens on to an expansi e parking area where am met by raham. s step out, what takes me most by surprise is the air of uiet. o road noise, no oices, just the whispering of a gentle bree e in the trees and the sound of birdsong. et in fi e acres of land, the grounds, ponds and orchards are on the ashleigh state, with its nearby house enabilly, the one-time home of aphne u aurier and the inspiration for anderley in her no el Rebecca. he history and pro enance here is tangible, making you feel special from the moment you arri e. he ider arn and the owner s ill both nestle below

us in a natural bowl that is surrounded by trees and low hills. his explains the peace the topography creates a ery pri ate area that feels miles away from anywhere. he ider arn has been a labour of lo e for raham and eather. a ing lo ingly reno ated their own ill, they wanted to create a ha en for isitors to the barn so that they too could enjoy this little piece of ornish hea en. t s hard to know where to start this is one of those places where want to run around like an excited child, taking in e erything all in one go raham suggests we start by strolling down to the front door of the barn and taking a moment to drink in the iew. e stand on the pa ed patio area and look out across the ancient orchards in front of us it s belie ed that cider was made here for the ywardreath riory up until its dissolution in the th century, hence the name the ider arn. rounded by the peace and the iew feel my shoulders drop and my cares slip away and can imagine that arri ing here for a holiday would be ery special. en an after dark arri al is memorable here as raham explains that in the e ening the barn is lit by concealed, soft lighting that emphasises the beautiful old stone and granite. could stand here fore er with the autumn sun on my face but tear myself away to explore the ider arn properly.

The hardwood front door opens with a satisfying weight to reveal the open-plan ground oor. aking full use of the substantial internal space, Graham and Heather have created an expansive kitchen, dining and living area. The centre of the kitchen is dominated by a large island unit, which doubles as a breakfast bar with high stools. They say ‘the devil’s in the detail’ and that’s certainly the case here. It’s no mean feat to cater for 16 but it’s made easy here with not one, but two ovens and two dishwashers! It’s sometimes the case that large holiday homes can sleep the full party but struggle when it comes to seating. Not the case here, the dining room table is simultaneously vast and impressive. The sleek glass top sits on two enormous, upturned teak roots, creating a fantastic centrepiece to the room.

A central wooden staircase separates the dining area from the cosy living space. Three sink into sofas surround a central fireplace that sparks our conversation about the barn’s eco credentials. raham explains that the fire is not just for aesthetic purposes; while it burns bright in the winter months it helps to top up the hot water supply as the barn is, for all intents and purposes, off-grid. A solar heating system sits on the barn’s roof, supplying a state of the art internal heating and cooling system that keeps the barn warm in winter and cool in summer. his also filters all of the air that comes into the barn, so that even when you're inside you're breathing fresh, clean Cornish air. All impurities, including pollen, are removed making this a great place to stay for allergy sufferers. Water comes from the ill s own spring while the wood for the fire is coppiced from Graham’s own trees, a supply he maintains by replanting every year. But you would never know that this technology was in play; control panels are hidden away, as is any super uous cabling and in the main living area there’s not a screen in sight. ut don t despair, film buffs can get comfy on one of the biggest sofas I have ever seen in the TV snug room that is hidden away at the far end of the barn – great for movie nights or to entertain the children. Local artwork adorns the walls while carefully chosen lighting and accent ornaments complement the calming, neutral colour schemes. I’m intrigued as to where the inspiration for the barn’s interior decoration

"We had a fantastic week here. Graham and Heather were so welcoming and couldn't do any more to make our stay any better. The house is stunning, finished to the highest standard and easily accommodated 16 of us with lots of space in both bedrooms and living area. The open plan kitchen, dining and living room area with its wood burner and endless log supply are great. The outside kitchen with wood fired pizza oven was fantastic fun. The pool is as big as our local swimming pool but a lot warmer, with the hot tub like a bath! Fowey and the surrounding area with its coastal walks are beautiful and the beach at Polkerris with its pub on the beach should not be missed, food there is really good. In the spaces we occupy every day, each picture, chair and textile design can tell a story, and nothing says ‘you’ more than a specially commissioned work. For glass designer Jo Downs, bespoke works are a passion. 20 years of creating spectacular installations for hotels, ocean liners, city headquarters and private homes have given her the skills and experience to create, as she puts it, “just about anything you can think of in fused glass. There’s never been a bespoke idea I haven’t spun into something real for my client – into a work that delivers the essence of what they first imagined. ndeed, o er two decades, o s clients imaginations have truly put her to the test. Previous commissions have included room-sized installations, spectacular glass ceilings and intricate swimming pool surrounds. n , o created her first multi-piece chandelier, wowing London design event, Decorex, with a showcase of elegant designs. Then, in 2018 she accepted a request from the United Arab Emirates’ Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel & Residences Emirates Pearl to create multiple giant glass oyster shells, complete with iridescent glass pearls. “Every year new challenges come my way, allowing me to push the boundaries of what’s possible. m an artist first and foremost, so working to create unique pieces that are meaningful to my client is my greatest moti ation.
