•EXPERIENCE• TRECOMBE LAKES Set amidst the trees in a magical woodland and lakeside location near Falmouth and the Helford River, Trecombe Lakes is the perfect setting for a unique holiday in Cornwall. Ideal for families who want a taste of the great outdoors, or couples looking for a breather from busy every day life, Trecombe Lakes offers seven fully fitted glamping pods. As well as these, the team is excited to announce the completion of one of six luxury Eco Lodges. Slightly larger and more modern in design, these lodges are built with style, offering comfort and strong green credentials. They also sleep up to six and when completed, will be nestled in and around the lakes. With a natural, stylish interior made from premium birch, each lodge will offer one double bedroom, a cosy mezzanine sleeping area and a sofa bed, as well as a beautiful handmade kitchen. And, while many who visit will wish to escape their ‘plugged-in’ lifestyles, each lodge will also enjoy free WiFi, especially handy for the kids! All of this, plus underfloor heating, a log burner and Swedish hot bath on the large outside decking area means these lodges will bring a whole new meaning to the word ‘luxury’. To be in with a chance of winning a three-night lakeside lodge break, turn to page 77!

Holiday home tips

Run rings like a king Ever wondered what it’s like to run up and down the same road for 12 or even 24 hours? Push yourself this year and strive to become king or queen of the course. Bys Vyken Events’ ‘The Madness of King George’ pits runners against one another on tarmac laps of the famous King George V Memorial walk in Hayle, ta ing in the signifi ant nature reserve of Copperhouse Pool, and the history of an industrial revolution. Each lap amounts to one mile; how many laps can you do in the allocated time? Last year saw athletes hit the 100km mark within 12 hours in glorious sunshine.

In an ongoing series of holiday home tips, George at Cornish Traditional Cottages discusses cost considerations when owning a holiday home in Cornwall.

Do you have the crown jewels to take on the king on 25th and 26th August 2018 and survive? For more information visit or call 07970 920500

With buying Cornish property comes the associated mortgage, survey, stamp duty and solicitors’ fees that need factoring into your budget. As with buy-to-let, mortgage repayments will eat into your revenue on an ongoing basis, something else that it pays to be mindful of. Buildings and contents insurance, and public lia ilit over are definitel worth having eorge says: “We recommend that you invest in public liability insurance. This covers you in the event that a guest injures themself in your property.” During quieter weeks you may need to refresh certain parts of the property, so be sure to have a fund that covers these costs. It’s also worth allocating some budget for ad hoc wear and tear, for small jobs like changing tap washers or replacing a doormat. Be sure to factor utilities into your fees. No guest wants to be stung by extra fees at checkout, and guests like to pay an all-inclusive fee for their stay, which includes council tax, water, electricity, gas or oil and, of course, WiFi. That brings us to changeovers. George tells us: “While more than half of our owners do their own changeovers, for those who don’t, we can put them in touch with property management services of varying levels, depending on their needs.” And it’s not just the cleaning; for changeovers, you’ll need three to four sets of linen and towels at least! “The trick is to plan for all of these costs and have a rainy day fund to support them so that they don’t spring up when you’re least expecting them.” For more information call 01208 893980 or visit

Cornwall’s collaborative campaign A group of organisations in Cornwall is asking people to consider what they want in death, while they’re very much alive, encouraging organ donation and the completion of Advance Decisions, in which someone can explain what they would want if they could no longer speak for themselves. The project involves Cornish charity Cornwall Hospice Care, the NHS Organ Donation Team and Compassion in Dying, and has been developed with members of the Lostwithiel Young Farmers Club who have named the campaign ‘Pass it on before you pass away’. People signing up as donors and making Advance Decisions are given cards for their wallets and key rings, created in association with Healthwatch Cornwall. Dr Deborah Stevens, Cornwall Hospice Care’s Medical Director says: “We would love to hear from anybody that wants to know more about the campaign. The more that take part, the bigger the difference we can make.” For more information call 01726 839156 or visit

News & views New Andrew Giddens collections for 2018

Depicting the natural majesty of the sea and the area’s beautiful beaches, these large-scale, oil on canvas works draw on the stunning scenery in and around Mount’s Bay where the artist lives and works. Inspired by the daily walk to his Perranuthnoe studio, and along the coastal paths to the neighbouring beaches of Praa Sands, Prussia Cove, Kennegy and Marazion, this collection captures the natural beauty of this wonderful part of Cornwall.

One of Cornwall’s most recognised figurative lands ape painters, ndrew Giddens presents a new collection inspired by the spectacular west Cornwall coast.

Available exclusively from his studio gallery, these works will be of note to collectors of contemporary Cornish landscape painting, and those who share Giddens’ love of Cornwall’s unique coastal landscape and its ever-changing atmospheres. For more information visit

DISCOVER MORE As ever, we’ve just given a small taster of Cornwall’s many beautiful and varied gardens. It’s true, we could easily have chosen an entirely different list altogether. Yet with so many to choose from, we hope our selection gives a flavour of what to expect and spurs you on to discover Cornwall’s many gardens on your own. Here are a few more ideas: • Eden Project • Trelissick • Godolphin • Pinetum Gardens • Glendurgan • Lanhydrock • Potager (turn to page 106 for our restaurant review)

With such an evocative name, you’re simply compelled to discover more about the Lost Gardens of Heligan – a stroke of marketing genius! Owned by the Tremayne family for centuries, Heligan Estate was once home to thriving, pretty gardens. Yet the land on the estate gradually turned to disrepair and became overgrown in the early to mid-20th Century, accelerated in large part by the lack of men to work the ground during the two World Wars, and the house’s acquisition for the respective war efforts. Within a generation or so, almost all trace of the former gardens had disappeared. It was only a chance discovery of small room in the derelict walled gardens on the estate in 1990 that sparked the regeneration project to bring them back to their former glory. And Cornwall is all the better for it. A day out at Heligan is a real adventure for all the family, with acres of land to explore and a huge variety of styles and plant species, contrasting dramatically from the structured Victorian Productive Gardens to the wild and wonderful Jungle. Elle Thackham of Heligan tells us: “There is so much that is special about The Lost Gardens of Heligan, but for me it’s the unusual elements of the garden such as the Pineapple pits and the Jungle. It’s amazing what we can grow right here in Cornwall.” Incidentally, the gardens’ rediscovery and regeneration owe a lot to Sir Tim Smit, the man who was instrumental in creating the neighbouring Eden Project – another spectacle on the outskirts of St Austell that you simply must visit. That two of Britain’s most awe-inspiring gardens are within such close proximity to each other is testament to both Cornwall’s horticultural excellence and the inspiring people who have helped shape these amazing spaces. Heligan is also home to Kneehigh Theatre’s Asylum. Discover more about upcoming summer events on page 87.

Trengwainton Gardens, Penzance The National Trust manages a range of beautiful country homes and gardens across Cornwall, from the grand houses of Trelissick and Lanhydrock, both of which boast equally impressive grounds, to the aforementioned subtropical valley garden Glendurgan, complete with its own maze – fun for both children and adults alike. Another you may not have heard of – but should really seek out – is Trengwainton, one of the most southwesterly gardens on the mainland. Trengwainton is a lush paradise, awash with colour at this time of year. Typical of National Trust managed properties, Trengwainton is particularly family friendly, will excellent facilities and a fabulous café. With plenty of good paths, Trengwainton is particularly accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs. There’s even an all-terrain mobility scooter available to hire on site. Dogs are also welcome on leads, so you needn’t leave any of the family at home!

of their approach: putting lifestyle at the forefront of their entire ethos. They recognise that Cornwall is a unique place, both geographically and culturally, and that people choose to live here for the incredible lifestyle it offers. What’s more, they understand that a home isn’t just bricks and mortar; it’s a personal sanctuary, the start and end point of adventures to come. It’s no wonder they were awarded ‘Best Estate Agents in Cornwall 2017/18’! Boasting a portfolio of property across the county, Martyn and Matthew are especially experienced in Polzeath, the Camel Estuary and the wider north coast, charmed, as we all are, by the allure of its rugged coastline and on-the-water lifestyle, and their reputation is proof that they are experts when it comes to marketing and selling properties here. Visually enticing and enhanced by aerial photography, placing homes within their wider context and highlighting the landmarks, attractions and facilities all within rea h, ust i ing through ohrs Rowe’s website feels like reading a high-end lifestyle magazine. And the results speak for themselves, with many of their properties

One client, for example, sees their approach and attitude as a real ‘game changer’: “After 18 months of no success, I decided to try something new and was recommended to Rohrs & Rowe. They really understood what was special about our house and its location from the start. They quickly had viewings and then swiftly found us a good buyer. They then drove the sale process along to a successful outcome, whilst remaining keen and helpful throughout.” Carn Mar is just one of the many stunning properties on Latitude50’s books. Martyn and Matthew tell us: “There’s great synergy between our two companies. It was an obvious choice to work together as we are both innovators and experts in our own sectors, priding ourselves on best-in-class marketing, attention to detail, customer service and aspirational properties and lifestyles.” For a chance win this magical week in Cornwall, all you have to do is head to Rohrs & Rowe’s and Latitude50’s Instagram pages, and with a few clicks of a button this incredible Cornish retreat could be yours for the taking!

You need to be able to put your full trust in them, especially when you’re not the expert yourself. So when we met Oltco Directors Tom Stringer and John Pearce a few months back, it was so refreshing to witness a company that embraces these traits as part of their business ethos, a company that does things properly and has got the balance just right. Tom and John’s work ethos is very simple: “feeling good about the work we do and the decisions we make.” Ensuring that the customer is well cared for and gets the quality of service they were expecting is paramount. An unusual approach for a driveway company but one that has seen them go fro a resin ooring ontra tor to a leading installer of resin bound gravel driveways in the south west and beyond.

With the popularity for resin bound gravel driveways reaching an all time high it’s not surprising to find a nu er of new and pop up’ companies have arrived on the market; something Tom and John are keenly aware of given the number of driveways they have had to re-lay for people. Taking the feel good factor of their business to the extreme, Tom and John have fi ed a nu er of drivewa s in their ho e town of Newquay which had been partially or adl installed pop up resin ound gravel installers. John tells us: “A large part of building our business over the years has been to edu ate people in the enefits of resin bound gravel. In the early days most had never heard of it. Our reputation has been built through hard work and good ethi s, we want people to feel onfident in our product, which is why we were the first o pan in the to give a 20-year guarantee.”

The Oltco team have transformed our garden from an untidy, unusable area into a clean and tidy outside space for our family to enjoy. An amazing product installed by a friendly and professional team – they come highly recommended. MR TURNER, NEWQUAY

One happy customer, Mr Turner from Newquay, says: “The Oltco team have transformed our garden from an untidy, unusable area into a clean and tidy outside space for our family to enjoy. An amazing product installed by a friendly and professional team – they come highly recommended.” Oltco resin bound gravel driveways come with a genuine 20-year guarantee. If you’re wondering how they are able to guarantee the product for 20 years the response is simple: experience, research and trial and error. Oltco has been testing and evolving its product for years and the team are constantly looking to improve their service. Tom has some handy hints to making sure ou find an installer who ou an trust “Check the company’s reputation, on line and with previous customers. Go and see a few of their jobs locally and speak to the owners. Another important thing to check is the standard of resin being used by each installer

– there are varying qualities and costs and durability are affected accordingly.” Oltco is constantly investing in the company and with huge plans for the future including the launch of nationwide Oltco franchises, the o pan is definitel in it for the long haul

THE HOUSE We catch up with Daniel Meek, Director at CSA Architects to pause for a moment and enjoy the view.

Bethany Allen

iving in Cornwall, we’re lucky to have the privilege of seeing spectacular views daily. Whether it’s on a morning stroll along the coast or from the comfort of our own homes, glimpses of the sea and rural landscapes are always on the horizon. We hear why it’s important to maximise your view and how it can be achieved from director at CSA Architects, Daniel Meek. Dan tells us: “Living and working as an architect in Cornwall, I’m able to see some of the most spectacular views the county has to offer. Whether this is a coastal seascape, a rural panorama or a glimpsed view along a narrow harbour street, it’s important to stop and enjoy the moment.” This is why making the most of the beautiful scenery our county has to offer is a top priority for the team at CSA. Dan continues: “Maximising the view is a key factor in many projects and we always do our utmost to ensure the best results.” Sometimes it takes a bit of creativity to realise the potential views that a property can utilise, which sees the team going so far as to climb on top of garages, step ladders in a field or fighting through an overgrown garden to take photographs that will highlight all the different perspectives a property could have.

As well as taking still images, CSA also utilises 3D software to show clients the views they could enjoy when the project is complete. Dan explains: “3D software allows us to show our clients the design in more detail, even being able to see the view they could have from their living room sofa.” This approach helps form the early concept design, all the way through to making decisions on the best materials and products to use in a particular location. Dan continues: “it’s not just about panoramic views; any view can be utilised, whether it’s a garden view or simply the connection between living spaces.” CSA continue to go the extra mile for its clients, making the most of properties in every way, and crafting incredible spaces that merge with Cornwall’s beautiful landscape.

A breakdown of George’s top tips when buying a holiday home in Cornwall.

n an ongoing series of holiday home tips, George at Cornish Traditional Cottages has discussed all the elements to consider when planning on buying a holiday home in Cornwall. Here’s a breakdown of the tips we’ve heard so far. First of all, he emphasises the importance of research. He tells us: “Monitor the property market for a few months and talk to a holiday letting agency to understand which properties appeal most in which locations.” Highlighting that it’s worth digging beneath the surface of your favourite Cornish towns to understand the property market and tourist economy. Whether you choose a mobile home, a lodge in a holiday park, a bungalow, a semi-detached or detached house, it’s very much up to your budget and, also, how you can make it appeal to tourists. Quirky, unusual and interesting holiday homes, even cabins and caravans, if executed right, can attract a great deal of interest. On the other hand, there will always be holidaymakers who want that ‘home away from home’ experience, whether this is a characterful cottage, smart townhouse or sprawling farmhouse. Of course, when it comes to choosing a holiday home, location is the defining feature a tors to onsider are is an area popular or undiscovered? Coastal or rural? You’ll be tempted by honeypot locations like St Ives, Bude and Newquay, but because another location isn’t teeming with tourists, it doesn’t make it an unviable investment opportunity.

GUIDE Finally, it’s worth noticing the kind of property attributes that can really help make your investment a fruitful one. George tells us: “These days WiFi and broadband of a decent speed are expected in holiday homes, and free of charge too!” Other considerations include whether you can offer family and dog friendly accommodation, a swimming pool, or beachfront positioning. George’s step-by-step guide gives an indication of the kind of things you should consider when thinking about buying a holiday home in Cornwall. The team at Cornish Traditional Cottages can provide expert advice and, in George’s words, “are here to point you in the right direction,” showing that the company is happy to help you weave through the web of properties and find the ideal holida ho e for ou and your guests!

GOOD AS NEW Restore your tired and dated furniture to its former glory with help from the team at P&C Upholstery.

hen thinking about changing the décor in our homes an option that’s easily overlooked is the prospect of re-upholstering furniture. Looking at your tired and worn sofa might be starting to make you feel like it’s time to ditch it and move on, but that doesn’t have to be the case. If the main structure is sound then reupholstering could be the easier and cheaper option; giving you that new furniture feel without having to fork out for a complete replacement. Plus, re-upholstering means that if it s a signifi ant ite of furniture, perhaps passed down through the family or discovered in an antique shop, you’re able to restore it to its former glory and continue to enjoy it for years to come. P&C Upholstery is a family company spanning three generations of the finest craftspeople, helping people bring new life to old pieces of furniture. We love showing off our new kitchen and can’t recommend the Now team and the quality of their kitchens highly enough

hen thinking about changing our homes, many of us become apprehensive at the thought of the stressful decisions to be made and the impact that a renovation can have on our lives. The thought of a project taking longer than expected and unforeseen problems arising sometimes just doesn’t seem worth the hassle. However, the concept of actually having the kitchen of your dreams is a massive incentive to make the bold leap and start the process of your home renovation project. hoosing the right o pan will definitel make a difference in how smoothly your renovation goes, and one company that has a great track record for working with you to achieve your ideal living space is Now Kitchens and Bathrooms. We hear some feedback from a recent project that the company undertook for a couple in Porthleven. Mr and Mrs Clemoes wanted their small kitchen to be extended into a larger space that their growing family could enjoy together. Mrs Clemoes tells us: “changing the layout of the two rooms was di ult to pi ture in head, ut using 3D software, the designer really brought it to life. Our dreams started to become a reality.” Having decided to move out for

a few weeks, Mr and Mrs Clemoes were impressed with Now Kitchens’ approach to the renovation. Mr Clemoes adds: “the team were on hand throughout the process. They recommended professional and trusted lo al fitters to wor alongside our uilders, monitored deliveries and installation, quickly resolved any unforeseen issues and generally helped to take the stress out of the process.” Upon moving back into their home, the family were delighted with the result and Mrs Clemoes tells us: “we love showing off our new kitchen and can’t recommend the Now team and the quality of their kitchens highly enough.” We think you’ll agree that the results speak for themselves! So, whether you’re after a showcase kitchen where you can entertain friends, or something more practical to help run a family home, start the process with Now Kitchens and drop into the showroom to begin your own interior design journey.

We discover how to maintain the character of period properties when they’re in need of renovation.

he view from our homes can often be the biggest draw of a property and that means our windows need to be in good order. The question is, how do you go about installing double-glazing if you have a beautiful period property with original wooden sash windows that have sadly come to the end of their usable life? The answer is: “very carefully and with a lot of research” explained John and Di, the proud owners of a stunning Edwardian property in the Penzance Conservation Area. They tell us: “We knew we had to replace 24 windows in the front of our house and realised that if we didn’t get it right, we would spoil the whole appearance of our home.” After seeing a multitude of different sliding sash windows and meeting numerous installation companies, they realised immediately that they had found their installation company when they met Phil and Alison Dawe, who run Dawes and Windows in Redruth. They explain: “right from the outset, we were impressed by Phil and Alison’s positive approach.

They listened to our concerns and then began to formulate a bespoke system that would meet our needs. Not only was their work competitively priced, but having Phil’s team on site was a joy, their attention to detail was outstanding, and we were thrilled with the completed project. We cannot recommend them highly enough.” In relation to the project, Phil tells us: “it was great working with John and Di, as they knew exactly what they wanted and we were able to tailor a supply and installation package for the that fulfilled their re uire ents e were also given the contract to replace the fas ias, so ts and guttering and to repla e them in a way that replicated the ornate details of the original timber ones. We always take pride in every job we do, big or small. I always say that if you can’t do it properly, it’s better not to do it at all – a philosophy that has served our family business well over the last 11 years.” Dawes & Windows are clearly a brilliant company to rely on for all your glazing needs.

THE DRAWING BOARD We meet renowned landscape architect, Elizabeth Staveley, owner of LandARC, who’s marrying sustainability with culture, environment and architecture, here in Cornwall.

ith Elizabeth’s clients including members of a world famous Irish rock band, a French fashion house and VIP stakeholders including members of the Royal family you could be forgiven for being somewhat in awe of practice director Elizabeth – but on meeting her, she is nothing but passionate about her art and her clients’ needs and she aims to add value to every project that comes her way.

Brought up in Cornwall, Elizabeth was fortunate to start her journey at Bosvigo House in Truro. With a professional horticultural advisor for a father and an artist for a mother it was no wonder that Elizabeth went on to study a combination of the two. A degree in landscape architecture at Greenwich University with international masterclasses in The Netherlands and Moscow was followed by postgraduate ualifi ations in heltenha and seven years later, she became chartered.

This enabled Elizabeth to forge a career that combined her love of the landscape and its culture. After working on the seven key UK habitats for an installation at the Natural History Museum, she quickly became interested in how geology and climate interact to create unique landscapes all over the world that have been shaped by man and ecosystems. By understanding these distinct processes that shape our environment she has facilitated the realisation of a number of complex projects and has been able to create lasting and beautiful places. Working with both developers and private landowners Elizabeth offers an expertise that ranges from large-scale settlement plans and urban and coastal regeneration to the conservation of historic landscapes and bespoke private gardens. And Elizabeth takes care of everything – from consultation with concerned stakeholders to planning, design, procurement and creation. Her specialism is to unlock the potential of a site, be that a private home, holiday home, country estate conservation or leisure related development, whilst keeping it rooted in its environmental, social and climatic context. As we talk she tells me of her previous role as the ďŹ rst fe ale dire tor of a pra ti e in the Middle East, working on multi-million pound landscape designs for palaces and luxury hotels chains as well as training and recruiting staff. Her portfolio is stunning with attention to detail second to none. The opulent landscaping, careful planting and

procurement of exquisite ‘objets d’art’ to complement the overall effect is breath-taking. As often happens when exceptionally talented people rise through the ranks, the hands on, creative element is usurped by managerial responsibilities. For Elizabeth, this needed to change. She explains that she wanted to return to her roots in Cornwall to set up her own practice, focussing on more local projects and spending time with her family. So Elizabeth’s international life has now been exchanged for studio bases in Truro and London so that she can enjoy all that Cornwall has to offer and importantly, more time at the drawing board. Son Tom is also something of a prodigy, helping his mum to create 3D visualisations of her projects in his spare time. He joins us for coffee, as our meeting’s in half term, and his passion for design is no less strong than his mum’s. It’s lovely to see a fa il enefiting fro the lifest le ornwall brings, working in harmony and spending valuable time together. She talks passionately about drawing more with a pen than with CAD, dealing directly with clients and walking around their gardens being able to apply her experience by making sketches of proposed ideas, there and then. li a eth s designs ta e in uen e fro a mixture of Celtic landscapes, blended with a classical French and Italianate structure. Growing up in Cornwall she understands the li ate and the spe ifi planting it re uires We talk coastal planting schemes mixed with more structured designs – Elizabeth takes

great inspiration from one of her heroes, Rowena Cade, who designed and help build the iconic Minack Theatre at Porthcurno. Like Rowena, Elizabeth is dedicated and not afraid of hard work. She is empathetic and takes great care to think through how her clients and the end users feel when they arrive in a landscape and is subsequently passionate about creating gardens and landscapes of distinction that are not discordant with their surroundings. Elizabeth is a new breed of chartered landscape architect who combines a worldclass portfolio with a local understanding of place and social issues. Her passion for high quality design adds value to both the development and the environment and in a world of shifting perspectives, unsightly developments and unwanted urbanisation her reputation for innovative, sensitive and elegant projects comes as a true breath of fresh Cornish air.

Breaking waves We catch up with Mike Lacey the man behind the camera at Waves Surf Art Gallery.

Bethany Allen

iving in Cornwall, many of us know the feeling of throwing ourselves into the surf and feeling the swell gently (or not gently) lift us off our feet. The power of the sea is undeniable and addictive, but imagine actually capturing that special moment when a wave is about to break. It’s hard enough holding your own in the swell, let alone riding in the eye of a wave and taking a picture at the same time. Mike Lacey has perfected the art of capturing the unpredictable beauty of the sea; his photographs pause a moment in time. Every wave is different, meaning every photo is unique and as each breaks it’s fast, powerful and volatile. With experience as a surfer, Mike understands the language of the sea, and is able to hold his own in the powerful Cornish surf. Cornwall’s coastline and waves are some of the most beautiful in the world and Mike has managed to capture some truly stunning images. We hear a bit about his experiences. Mike explains: “You just have to put yourself out there and wait for nature to do something magical and be ready to capture it when it does.” It’s the stunning wall of water that a wave forms just before it breaks that’s

so captivating. It can range from a glassy turquoise to a deep, moody blue and anyone who loves the sea can connect to these images and connect to the power of the sea through them. Mike tells us: “From the moment I got the "Cornish Heart" photo the day before my daughter Coral was born to the ‘Cornish Kiss’ which has the most amazing face in, and then most recently the image of a double rainbow lining up perfectly with the curl of the wave, I realised the ocean is just full of surprises.” Mike continues: “Nature keeps on giving and as long as I keep putting myself out there as much as I can, I’m sure there will be a lot more magic to capture in the beautiful seas of Cornwall.” So, head down to Waves gallery in Porthleven to see the incredible moments of the ocean that Mike has captured, and maybe even take one home with you.

ith both a furniture and home accessories store in Truro, Uneeka provides all aspects of interior design, with a difference. The company focuses on sourcing fair-trade quality products that stand out in the world of design, whilst still being environmentally aware. Team member Jess Preen talks us through the company values that are the backbone to their decisions in sourcing their beautiful and unique products. Jess explains: “Uneeka was founded on the concept of good quality, fair trade, ethical products at a reasonable price. We’re always trying to introduce new and unusual ranges, whilst still asking our suppliers important ethical questions about their products.” One small change that Uneeka has made in its café (located above the lifestyle store) has been to reject single use plastics. Jess continues: “We now use biodegradable takeaway cups and sell reusable bamboo and rice husk cups, providing a free hot drink from the café on purchase.” Although a seemingly simple change, this will make a big difference to the amount of plastic waste being produced and unequivocally making its way into the ocean each year. Jess continues: “A big favourite for our customers

are the reusable newspaper bags, a unique way of packing products and a great gift bag at the same time.” These bags are made from recycled newspapers by a charity in Delhi, one of Uneeka’s long-term Fairtrade suppliers, who they’ve been working with for 14 years. Having recently expanded their offering to include a pet range, the team’s favourite picks are the dog leads, collars and even men’s belts made from recycled climbing gear by a small company here in the UK. Jess tells us: “It’s so great to find a well ade produ t that supports local trade and has been made with recyclable materials. The quirky idea sits well with our ethos and looks great in our Uneeka shop too!” The team are always on the lookout for new suppliers who support their ideals, thereby making sure to keep the shop looking fresh and exciting, so next time you pop in you’re sure to find that perfe t gift or pie e of furniture.

ituated at the entrance of the Old Workshop, Charlestown, The Craft Kiln is a newly refurbished cooperative-style gallery which allows individual makers the opportunity to display their work and have an input into the running of the business. Woodturner John Fells feels that this gives the Charlestown crafters a freer rein to experiment, and that the customer is therefore ore li el to find pie es not available elsewhere. “We develop our own range of work, and as we also spend time behind the till in The Craft Kiln, we have the han e to find out what the usto er thin s of the work. I also feel lucky that we are in such a historic spot, which sometimes feels like stepping back in time the further down the hill into Charlestown that you come.” The stylised and colourful paintings of artist, Sarah Blakey, are on display at Cscape Art's Charlestown gallery, which is also at The Old Workshop. Sarah illustrates the local working life with her unusual style, in luding onl enough detail to give a avour of the scene, and to suggest character and movement. Her husband, photographer Mick Blakey, visits every corner of the county with his lurcher, Cooper, in search of that elusive land or seascape which he conveys in his own artistic style. A large stock of his prints and cards can also be found at Cscape Art. Upstairs at The Old Workshop are the antiques and collectables of Sail Loft Emporium. The many stalls and cabinets displa an infinitel varied sto , in luding Art Deco and Cornish pottery, which is the specialisation of trader Jessie Russell. She is currently selling a collection of vintage Celtic Newlyn pottery from the estate of a private collector. Ceramics of this type are now highly sought-after and collectable. There is also a vast choice of other vintage and retro items, as well as antique silver, jewellery and other collectables. Visit Paul Felton's cabinets for rings of every description, or Mike Fergus's corner for coins and medals.

The Old Workshop is next to the car park at harlestown, where ou will also find plent of places to eat and drink, and the historic harbour is only a few steps down the road.

tishoo Gallery is located in the historic village of Charlestown on Cornwall’s south coast. Just up the hill from the harbour, the gallery can be found in a beautiful courtyard of cottage gardens opposite the old Methodist Chapel. As well as fabulous art, there’s also a fantastic selection of home accessories and giftware, all designed and made in the UK. We take a closer look at some of the artists whose work is featured in the gallery. Artwork by David Axtell and Kit Johns sits alongside glassware by Margaret Johnson and jewellery by Julie Fountain. Painter David Axtell captures life on Cornwall’s beaches in his stunning oil paintings depicting family scenes and ocean moments. David has been an illustrator for over 15 years and in that time has worked for a variety of publishers including: Random House, Harper Collins and Macmillan. Also a painter, Kit Johns brings a fresh and contemporary twist to Cornish landscape art from his studio on The Lizard. His work explores the wild and untamed nature of Cornwall’s landscape, using a variety of techniques and mediums such as canvas, paper and wood. Designer Margaret Johnson uses an extraordinary te hni ue involving straw sil fi res to reate her beautiful glass bowls, vases and wall art. Each is deli atel finished with pre ious etal leaf aving studied fine art and s ulpture and taught for a number of years, she now works from her studio in Bude. Similarly, Julie Fountain, founder of Beach Art Glass, creates stunning and unique jewellery inspired by the ocean. Her delicate glass beads are ade using a a ewor te hni ue, where colourful Italian glass rods are melted down and then shaped in a es to produ e intri ate and beautiful jewellery. Owners Liz and Paul showcase a wonderful array of artwork in their colourful and inviting gallery. The artists before mentioned are just a small excerpt from the medley of creators and makers whose work is on display. So, make sure to tie in an amble around the picturesque port of Charlestown with a visit to this beautiful gallery, and discover the talents of these innovative artists.

| ART LEFT Each tile is handcarved by Mel, using ancient techniques

THE ART IS IN THE TECHNIQUE We take a look at the work of fantastic local artist Mel Chambers and discover the incredible art of inlay tiles.

ornwall is well known to be an artists’ haven thanks to its incredible natural light and breathtaking landscapes. Indeed, our regular gallery pages demonstrate the amazing and varied art available across our fantastic county. It was in this section that a local artist caught our eye; amidst painters and sculptors to come across someone specialising in a lost art was intriguing. Mel Chambers is a self-taught artist who uses the ancient 13th-century technique of inlay tiles to create amazing and inspirational tiles. She blends beautiful images, inspiring quotes and poetry to create completely unique and bespoke pieces that are impossible to replicate. Inlay tiles are technically known as encaustic tiles, which means ‘to burn in’ as the olour is fired la and e edded into the tile. In fact, due to the hard wearing and everlasting way the tiles are made, no self-respecting monastery would have been seen without an inla tile oor, as no atter how many pilgrims walked over them they would never fade away. Indeed, ancient tiles are still being discovered today, fully intact and just as beautiful as the day they were made.

The art of Alchemy Tiles is that each tile is individually hand carved into wet clay. Coloured slip (runny clay with oxides and stains added to it) is then inlaid on the top to sink into the carved areas. Once the slip dries, the tile is scraped back to reveal the image and script underneath. The tile is left to dry and then gla ed and fired raw, onl on e and very slowly over three days. Once the tile is removed from the kiln a stain is wiped over to highlight the crazing within the crackle glaze. The whole process for each tile takes a minimum of two weeks, which is an amazing dedication to the process! These beautiful tiles can be used and enjoyed an where as the an e ade spe ifi all for any space and with almost any design. So, whether it’s a kitchen back splash, bathroom, firepla e or an individual tile for a loved one, they can be made bespoke to you, with your own meaningful message. A message that will be held eternally in earth and time.

A family festival

We discover The Great Estate, a familyfriendly festival that s hard to beat.

f, like me, you’re and a little wary when it comes to taking children to festivals, fear not! The Great Estate Festival that takes place every year at Scorrier House, near Redruth, is perfect for the whole family. Set in the grounds of the beautiful Scorrier Estate, that has been in the Williams family for seven generations, the weekend long festival is a mixture of music, entertainment, dancing, feasting and playing. The setting is ideal as there’s a combination of open spaces and gently sloping combined with intriguing woodland glades and secret walled gardens. After having donned much glitter and the u i uitous ower rowns, we arrived to find an atmosphere that was relaxed and friendly. This festival has a real retro vibe echoed by the traditional fair ground rides and helterskelter that our children quickly sought out! I was happy browsing the vintage stalls, selling everything from clothes and furniture to lassi s upperware he air was filled with the gentle sound of music reaching us from the main stage, too much of a draw for my daughter who is music-mad so we headed over to set up camp. There were families with young children everywhere, picnicking or just chilling on the lawn. For those too young to be interested in the bands, a whole area

dedicated to children’s crafting was keeping little ones happily entertained. We found a sunny spot and left the boys to have a snooze while my daughter enthusiastically headed straight to the front of the stage where we danced the afternoon away to an eclectic mix of tunes, along with many other families. All that dancing worked up an appetite and we were spoiled by the choice of really good quality food stalls that surrounded us. fter we d had our fill, daughter and I stayed in the main arena to listen to the next band while the boys headed off to the skate area, which was also home to a circus skills workshop. i e ew and as the sun went down we headed home, but not before we had explored the Whispering Woods, home to den building workshops and story telling, the Secret Gin Garden (for me not the children!) and an incredible silent disco in the trees. It’s a festival that’s small enough to feel safe with children but, with a great line up of bands and events, big enough to keep everyone entertained – we can’t wait for next year!

Mad, magical THEATRE

Kneehigh’s theatre season returns with three spectacular shows in the magical surroundings of the Lost Gardens of Heligan. é MAIN Foot stomping fun at The Asylum

ummer is coming and it’s time for the return of Kneehigh’s incredibly popular theatre, The Asylum, set in the agnifi ent surroundings of the ost Gardens of Heligan. Now in its eighth year, The Asylum is a unique theatrical experience under anvas, whi h has fir l esta lished itself as a must-go event in Cornwall’s summer calendar. The Asylum brings with it a chance for friends old and new to enjoy world-class theatre, delicious food and drink, live music and a good old-fashioned Kneehigh knees-up. This internationally celebrated Cornish theatre company is presenting three shows in the purpose-built tent; featuring exquisite puppetry, live (foot stomping) music and fabulous theatrics in a season of madness, mayhem, and surprise. Opening the season is a new promenade musical, Ubu Karaoke, inspired by Alfred Jarry’s notorious and absurd comedy and a love of karaoke! This political satire gets the audience standing and moving around with the action, and is more like a gig than a normal theatre show, but then Kneehigh doesn’t do normal! Returning after a gloriously successful run in 2016, is Simon Harvey’s hilarious Fup, based on Jim Dodge’s international bestselling novella and set in the Cornish Wild West. This is

a wonderfully strange and uproarious modern fable about family, love, and the impact an overweight whiskey-swilling duck can have! With live music performed by an extraordinary cast and a band of musicians, this is a real quirky treat and you would be totally quackers to miss it! Finally, who can resist the hip-hoppity fun of Quentin Blake’s classic story The Dancing Frog, reimagined for all the family in a new version by Kneehigh’s Artistic Director Mike Shepherd. neehigh s partnership with he ost Gardens of Heligan means visitors can wander the gardens for free just before the show, or spend longer exploring with a special combined garden and show ticket. Food and drinks are available for all performances and the wonderful Heligan Kitchen & Bakery will be offering a delicious seasonal menu using local produce, much of which is sourced from the garden itself.

Penrose Kitchen’s new garden offers an enchanting space for outside dining. é ABOVE

A beautiful spot for alfresco dining

ocated on the outskirts of Truro, Penrose Kitchen is nestled within the tranquil grounds of Penrose Water Gardens, a beautiful and lush sanctuary of water plants. Leading up to summer, Penrose Kitchen has been working away on its own garden, ready to launch the new lawn area for an even better outside dining experience. Tables, chairs and benches provide more dining space and allow everyone to make the most of the glorious Cornish weather. Already, owners Ben and Sam have recognised the lawn’s potential for outdoor cooking, so watch out for barbeque events this summer! Sam tells us: “Our aim is to have an outdoor bar for the summer season and a gazebo to give shelter from the sun,” bringing the dining experience well and truly outdoors and creating a relaxed environment to enjoy the finest fare that ornwall has to offer The restaurant itself is set within a beautiful wooden building that looks li e the ind of a in ou d find ne t to a lake in France. The decking area outside extends out over the water giving you a bird’s eye view of the assortment of water owers or lun h, sit on the de ing with a

Sensational summer dining at the Falcon Hotel, Bude

Beer and Bird named one of the UK’s top fried chicken restaurants Beer and Bird, located in the heart of St Ives, has just been listed as one of the top fried chicken spots in the UK. The family run business (which sources all of its meat from a free-range Cornish poultry farm) was named by the Telegraph as one of the UK’s best fried chicken restaurants for 2018. The article, which featured eateries from London, Glasgow and Dublin, was compiled earlier this year to showcase superior alternatives to fast food conglomerate KFC. Co-founder Tom Hanson tells us: “We’re really honoured to feature in the list. We’re extremely passionate about the quality of our food, so to be recognised in a national publication is absolutely fantastic.” So, get down to the Beer and Bird this summer and see what all the fuss is about! Dogs love Catch Seafood, Bar & Grill!

Dog walkers are welcome at

Porthleven’s Harbour View Café

With scintillating views over Porthleven’s iconic and typically Cornish harbour, and offering freshly cooked all day breakfasts and lunches, Harbour View Café is perfect for anyone looking to refresh themselves on a day spent exploring the south coast.

Mawgan Porth’s Catch Seafood Bar & Grill is really taking the area by storm. Indeed, it would seem that this dog-friendly restaurant and the dog-friendly beach have become something of a celebrity hotspot, welcoming A-listers including Minnie Driver, Robert Lindsay, Justin Lee Collins and Dawn French, as well as stars from Eastenders and Game of Thrones! As well as its Sunday ‘best roast on the coast’, Catch is also being recognised for its green credentials. It’s recommended by The Final Straw for plastic elimination, Padstow Lobster Hatchery for ‘buy-one-set-one-free’ and Cornwall Good Seafood Guide for ringing st le to unfashiona le fish using sustainable stocks and making them tastier than ever.

Managers Kizzy and Jo are already building a fantastic rapport with locals and visitors alike, especially those looking to take a load off while the dog curls up beneath the table. Indeed, the café’s Facebook page is already awash with rave reviews, with many hailing the polite, lovely staff and marking on the relaxed atmosphere.

The whole menu is cooked from scratch, with plenty of delights to choose from, whatever the time of year. The café’s homemade soups, in particular, come highly recommended, as do the homemade cakes and cream teas! HARBOUR VIEW CAFÉ Mount Pleasant Road, Porthleven TR13 9JN 07811 129501 or visit jokizpenn

Enjoy delicious, freshly roasted coffee at the Apple Tree Café! New owners Penny and Martin Lees have brought their self-acclaimed coffee obsession all the way from Australia.

Catch is open for winter weekends, school holidays and all day, every day from Easter to November.

Penny tells us: “The secret is consistently serving great coffee every single time you make it – from 9am until 5pm and every

A leisurely LUNCH

Every issue, we dine undercover at a different restaurant, tasting the menu and putting the team through their paces in search of the finest eateries, freshest produce and best service. It’s a tough job but someone has to do it! Look out for our ‘Tried and Tasted’ seal of approval.

We discover the Potager, a vegetarian garden café nestled amongst the trees.

aving grown up in Cornwall, I am lucky enough to hear about the best local restaurants from family and friends. It’s nice to have personal recommendations rather than relying on internet searches and reviews. So, I followed a friend’s recommendation and headed to Potager Garden and Café in Constantine. We took the scenic route via the village of Gweek, past the bustling boat yard and following the winding country roads. At this time of year the hedges are ursting with wild owers, plants and wildlife - everything looked lush and green.

Table tennis in the greenhouse

RIGHT The mezze and sweet potato laksa

On arrival the car park was almost full; Potager is obviously popular. “Why haven’t I been here before?” I asked myself. If you park in the main car park you can follow a path up through the gardens past the vegetable patch up to the café, which is housed inside a large glassed conservatory. We couldn’t wait to try out some of the delights on the menu. It was busy, but still had a cosy relaxed feel to it. For the winter months there’s a wood burner waiting to be lit, will definitel e visiting then for so e war ing soup in front of the fire The café serves hearty veggie breakfasts, sumptuous cakes and nutritious vegetarian specials, thanks to chef Daisy’s inventive ideas and avours he enu hanges with the seasons and Potager prides itself on using fresh ingredients straight from the garden. I chose the laksa curry from the specials list. It was a spicy coconut broth full of sweet potato, mange tout, green beans and whole-wheat noodles. The zingy spices shone through the coconut milk and fresh veg. My lunch companion had the mezze platter – a delicious combination of pickled cucumber, hummus, tzatziki, bulgar and green salads and fresh sourdough bread. It was all so fresh and delicious. Of course a weekend treat isn’t complete without dessert finished with a sli e of lemon and poppy seed cake. It was the star of the show! It was sharp and sweet with lots of pun h le on avour and added te ture fro the poppy seeds. It was the perfect end to a gorgeous lunch, which would have been really healthy, had I resisted the cake! After our lunch we took a stroll around. Next to the café there’s a beautiful refurbished wooden greenhouse that's almost tropical inside. There are books, games and table tennis, just what you need to keep the younger ones occupied while you enjoy some coffee and cake. Outside there are hammocks to relax in with a book while taking in the sights and smells of the garden here were so an owers that we hadn’t seen before, which makes it a great place to go for some garden inspiration!

Potager was born from an abandoned plant nursery that has been nurtured into a lovely garden space. There’s a great community feel to Potager too. You’re free to roam the gardens and greenhouse, eat, drink and play. Potager Garden also has some artists' studios on site and as we visited during the first weekend of the Cornwall Open Studios some of the artist were there to greet visitors and talk about their artwork. It was great to see them at work. Having an art background myself I was a little jealous of the artists doing what they love, in such a wonderful setting, with so much inspiration around them. Last month’s Cornwall Living featured Rebecca McDonald, an artist who is based at Potager Garden. She sculpts felt animals and creates installations that capture the imagination – you can read more about Rebecca by visiting Potager Garden is a place that I will visit again and again, not just for the food but also to see the gardens change through the seasons and to check out the artists at work.

Welcome to Bosavern Guest House

A handy alternative

for salty sea dogs!

Bosavern Guest House came under new ownership last year, when Martin and Helen Stevens took on the business, along with their dog Lulu. Ideally situated in the beautiful Cot Valley, it’s perfect for a holiday with your dog, with easy access to the South West Coast Path, which in turn offers endless miles along which your dog can sniff and roll to their heart’s content. Martin and Helen offer self-guided walking holidays in west Cornwall, with sample walks including those from St Just to Porthcurno, St Ives to Zennor and Sennen Cove to Lamorna. They cover several sections of the South West Coast Path, offering the advantage of being able

to return to their comfortable bed and breakfast every evening via their collection service.

Cornwall is a mecca for dog owners, with endless miles of open sand, coastpath and countryside for them to investigate as you enjoy strolling in the fresh air. But, with all that salt in the air, they’re bound to get thirsty, which is why the team at Seakisses launched their fabulous Beach Dog Bowl, designed for beach-going dog lovers the world over.

Prices include breakfast, packed lunch and an evening meal, plus transport to the start and end of each walk. Available between mid March and mid November, Martin and Helen warmly welcome anyone who wants to make the most of west Cornwall on foot. They have dog-friendly rooms too, so your furry friend needn’t miss out on your Cornish adventure!

Alongside natural anti-bacterial properties, these bowls are sturdy, durable and dishwasher proof and the best part is, once you’ve had enough of it, you can bury it in your compost heap, where it will slowly compost back to nothing. How about that for a plastic alternative!

Doggie DIRECTORY A slice of Cornish history Pencarrow

Catch on Mawgan Porth beach is a fantastic seafood restaurant with a green ethos. Head Chef and owner Pat says. “We welcome dogs, and Mawgan Porth allows unrestricted access all year round. We have spe ifi spa es where our furr friend is wel o e inside and out et us know when booking, so we’ll reserve the right table for you all.” Co-owner Avis adds: “We’re soppy about our own dog Richard who adores the beach. He digs the sand and dips in the rock pools! Then it’s back to Catch for dog treats, a nap on the decking or trying to catch morsels of buttery lobster or steak if he gets lucky. It’s a dog’s life!”

Pencarrow, home of the Molesworth-St Aubyn family for nearly 500 years, is tucked away in 50 acres of rolling countryside on the edge of Bodmin Moor. The 8th baronet, Sir William Molesworth, born in 1810, laid out the elegant Italianate Gardens and collected specimen conifers from around the world, some of which still tower over the rhododendrons and camellias that line the mile long carriage. There’s a surprise round every corner, from an Iron Age hill fort to the Victorian lake and ice house, grotto, and a massive rockery of Cornish granite boulders. The house, café and shop are open until 27th September, Sundays to Thursdays. The gardens are open from 1st October every day until 31st October.

We explore the benefits of private treatment at Duchy Hospital.

Lucy M oyse

hen it opened, Duchy Hospital was entirely private. All patients paid for their treatment, either with medical insurance or their own funds, but over the last few years it has begun to take NHS patients too. Why, then, is it worth paying for your treatment to go to the same hospital? Simply put, paying for your treatment means that you’re treated at your onvenien e, rather than to fit in with the NHS. Private patients can choose when they have their treatment, which makes a real difference. For some, this simply means being seen as soon as possible – in some cases being seen by a consultant on the same day as being contacted. In fact, one previous patient at Duchy Hospital explains: “For me, it was an urgent consultation at my instigation and I was dealt with in an understanding and very prompt manner, which gave me comfort at su h a di ult ti e or others, it s si pl a out eing a out to hoose a ti e whi h fits into their lifestyle. Have you ever stopped to think about Equity Release but been unsure what it entails? Equity Release experts, Harris Begley Financial, Planning, help to dispel the myths.

hen you’re thinking about planning for your retirement, it’s important to take a look at the whole of our finan es, not just your pension, to see if you’re on course for the kind of retirement you’d want for yourself. Equity Release was regulated in 2007 and has come a long way in ten years, helping people who are asset-rich to have the freedom to make lifestyle choices they may not have been able to afford otherwise. Designed for people aged 55 and above, Lifetime Mortgages (the name for Equity Release plans regulated by the government) allow you to release capital from your home whilst still maintaining ownership. A Lifetime Mortgage comes with a ‘No Negative Equity Guarantee’ that means you will never owe more than the value of your home. Only when your property is no longer your main residence is it sold, at which point the proceeds of the sale are used to pay off the loan and any accrued interest. Any remaining proceeds are then paid to you or our heirs hould there e a defi it etween the sale price and the loan amount then any remaining balance is written off. Even if you have an outstanding standard mortgage you can still release equity as long as the funds, and/or your savings, can pay of your existing mortgage. You can also choose not make monthly payments on a Lifetime ortgage, so in reasing our finan ial freedom. The interest you choose not to pay is simply added to the total you owe and paid when the property is sold. You should bear in mind that a lifetime mortgage is just that, a lifetime commitment and the costs involved, plus the amount you release, will reduce the inheritance you leave. However it may be
