his month has been an exciting one creating the ‘bumper’ March issue of Cornwall Living. Dan has been out and about across the county discovering some great activities for everyone to enjoy. Whether that be on water, land or two wheels, he discovered that Cornwall is the perfect paradise for an outdoor adventure – turn to page 16 to read the full story. The Duchy also offers a paradise of a different kind, one that provides a stunning backdrop to your wedding. Our Cornwall Living Weddings supplement has been a delight to put together, bringing back happy memories of my own Cornish wedding. From page 75, we are delighted to showcase a range of amazing venues for your special day, alongside ideas for catering, photography and much more. Meanwhile, Felix has been in conversation with none other than the voice artist who will be recognised by our younger readers (and their parents) as the voice of Mummy Pig! While not ‘jumping in muddy puddles’, actress and screenwriter, Morwenna Banks, stars in the hit Channel 4 sitcom, Damned. Read more from page 122. Alongside our main features we also have plenty of inspiration if you are looking to buy a new home (from page 27) or refurbish your existing one, and we have a fabulous Win It All Competition (page 64) with a prize value of over £7,000. With a brand new kitchen and a warmer, richer colour palette to frame the outstanding view over Swanpool beach, Emma Bastian tells us: “We now have a more luxurious space with rich hues, fabulous velvet teal dining chairs, booth seating, as well as a group dining area that’s perfect for those family and friend get-togethers. “We’re also welcoming a new Head Chef after his relocation back to Cornwall from London. He wants to give customers an experience influenced by the rugged Cornish coastline, using the wonderful produce surrounding us to create a menu that everyone can enjoy!” George’s ethos is to cook with the seasons without manipulating ingredients too much and is excited to bring his experience to the new look restaurant. He is passionate about using the best sustainable Cornish produce wherever possible, adopting a real ‘nose to tail’ approach to food, baking his own breads, churning ice creams, pickling and preserving vegetables. Emma continues: “We are lucky enough to be able to source our seafood from the local fishermen, even our crabs and lobsters are caught eight miles from the restaurant and kept in the tank for our customers to choose.” Needless to say, Hooked on the Rocks and its tantalising new menu is set to impress over the coming spring, so we’ll see you there!

rom simply lacing up your boots and hitting the coast path, to donning a life jacket and heading out on the water, there’s plenty to keep you active in the outdoors across the Duchy. This month, we explore the many and varied ways that you can make the most of your time in Cornwall, whether you’re planning a trip, or you live here and are searching for new ways to enjoy the weekends. If hitting the water is your idea of an outdoor adventure, then you’re in the right county. There’s a whole array of activities to get stuck into across Cornwall, whether it’s learning surf, or heading out on a charter and catching your own supper. The Hoxton Special (www. thehoxtonspecial.com) for instance, on Marazion Beach, is a watersports centre with fantastic facilities, offering SUP hire and instruction, kayak hire, and super ised itesur ng instruction as well as other health and tness classes ngus tells us: “We refer to ourselves as a ‘blue gym’, which basically means that we’re a community interest company that utilises our natural surroundings to enhance health and wellbeing.” Perhaps you want to delve beneath the surface and see what lives under the waves. If so, Kennack Diving (www.kennackdiving. co.uk) on the Lizard offers diving trips for all levels. Owners David and Des can arrange bespoke dives, which have become extremely popular thanks to the pair’s intimate knowledge of the local waters. One activity that’s really taken off in recent years is SUP (stand-up paddle boarding). It’s also evolved into a much more leisurely pursuit, particularly on calmer days, making it perfect for gently traversing the hidden coves and inlets along Cornwall’s craggy coastline, exploring areas that are simply inaccessible from land. Why not give SUP a go on the Lizard peninsula? Home to the UK’s most southerly point here you ll also nd i ard d enture (www.lizardadventure.co.uk). You can enjoy activities that include kayaking and coasteering, as well as SUP sessions, which sometimes result in encounters with rare and endangered species like seals and basking sharks. Perhaps this is your idea of fun but you don’t want to waste time travelling there from your north Cornish retreat. If so, get in touch with Cornish Rock Tors (www.cornishrocktors.com). Based in Port Gaverne and offering a wealth of activities including coasteering, sea kayaking and SUP, Cornish Rock Tors has the added bene t o an all weather enue Tregildrans Quarry – a freshwater lake set in a quiet wooded valley, perfect for when the weather is less forgiving.

Bridge Bike Hire
COVER FEATURE | For those who’d rather stay dry, we have the two-wheeled approach. Linking the towns of Padstow, Wadebridge, Wenfordbridge and Bodmin through 18 miles of Cornish countryside, the Camel Trail also leads you along a disused railway and the Camel estuary – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that proffers both stunning views and occasional sightings of some of Cornwall’s incredible (and often rare) wildlife. It’s a highlight for residents all across the Duchy, as well as thousands of visitors every year, and even if your trusty bike has found itself resigned to a rusty shed corner, worry not! You can hire bikes from Bridge Bike Hire in Wadebridge at the start of the trail (www. bridgebikehire.co.uk). Whatever you need – be it special needs bikes with wheelchairs, trailers for dogs, child seats, balance bikes, or mountain bikes – Bridge Bike Hire has you covered, also offering super-comfort hybrid bikes for adults. And if you are planning on bringing the dogs, they’ll be pleased to hear that dog trailers come complete with a bowl and water! Another of our favourite trails is the coastto-coast mineral tramway, a trail that winds for 11 miles from Bissoe to Devoran. Although hilly in parts, this route is well worth the effort, with highlights including the day-glo mud banks bordering the Carnon River, and Poldice valley – once a site of copper ore extraction. Take it all in from the saddle with hire bikes from Go ByCycle (www. cornwallbikehire.co.uk).

he living room, with its red brick hearth and high valuted ceiling and exposed beams is a fabulous space for entertaining with its unusual wrought iron spiral staircase making a really striking feature. The kitchen-breakfast room is complete with an Aga making a very cosy space and helps cement that ‘house in the country’ feel that so many relocate to Cornwall for. Four bedrooms make up the accommodation, with one on the ground floor with the other three set below on the lower level and all complemented with two bathrooms and even a sauna! The layout is exceptionally flexible and the addition of a separate Atelier building, which makes for a fabulous artist’s studio or hobby shop, means you can absolutely maximise your living space. This also includes a three-car port and garage, perfect whether you’re a collector, or simply want to shelter your wheels from the Cornish elements. The gardens and grounds are an absolute delight, indeed a little bit of paradise for the keen gardener. The original millpond creates a fabulous main feature and a really tranquil space to sit and relax. The beautiful formal garden has wonderful pathways with well planted borders leading to a lower pond with a summerhouse. The higher garden backs onto beautiful rolling countryside, making it a great spot for garden parties in the summer months. The house is just a short walk from St Mabyn, one of north Cornwall’s most picturesque villages, and is only four miles from the market town of Wadebridge. If you’re a foodie, then north Cornwall is a dream come true, with offerings including Nathan Outlaw in Port Isaac and Rock, and Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant in Padstow.

his gorgeous home has been carefully refurbished and updated over the years, yet its original atmosphere and character are still very much present. It’s attractive L-shape design, with mellow stone elevations and feature brick window arches beneath a hipped roof are just some examples of this, and there remains a date stone of 1680 in the front elevation – likely a piece taken from the bridge in Grampound. Downstairs are two main reception rooms as well as a well tted itchen with a gas red ga which eeps things cosy during the colder months. Upstairs, a bathroom and shower room, as well as four bedrooms that include a master en-suite, complete the accommodation. One of our favourite features, however, is the conservatory. Opening onto the south-western elevation it overlooks the garden, and is a great spot to relax with a book in the late winter and early spring sunshine. Outside, a large double garage stands alongside the house, while the substantial secluded grounds are perfect for families with children and pets. Indeed, the whole
area lends itself perfectly to family life, lying on the between Truro and t ustell with a variety of local facilities on hand, including a primary school. It also enjoys a regular bus service, which links residents to picturesque locations including the Roseland peninsula – famed for its natural beauty – and ornwall s cathedral city Truro This is a wonderful home for a family that hopes to make the most of life in the Duchy.

Inspiring CHANGE Interior design is anything but a ‘one size fits all’ exercise, which is where Sue and the team at Inspirational Interiors come in.
hether you’re designing the perfect holiday rental, from cottage to penthouse, or creating your ‘forever’ home; more than anything, Sue from Inspirational Interiors believes in the importance of the individual when it comes to interior design, and it’s something she focuses on with each of her clients. “Gone are the days when gingham curtains are a necessity in that quaint little Cornish cottage. With the freedom of choice in fabrics and design now available, putting your own stamp on a home has never been easier!” That said, Sue stresses it does require a certain amount of bravery; a degree of pushing the boat out a little beyond your usual comfort zone. One way to explore your individuality, she explains, is with colour, and what better time to be talking about this than with spring just around the corner? “The wintry greys we’ve been living with for months are suddenly interrupted by vivid greens and yellows popping up all over the place. A simple ‘pop’ of colour can add vibrancy to your home that not only screams personality, but gives anybody who walks through the door a little insight into who you are. And
ABOVE LEFT Don’t be afraid to add some personality into your home with bold patterns and colours

CL--70--ED--Inspirational Interiors--2.00.indd 2
It’s all about understanding what your taste is and ha ing the con dence to pursue it. Why not play around a bit and see what feels right for you? Sue suggests putting together a mood board – peruse the magazines, look online, and collate what makes you happy. “Just by observing what you do and don’t like, from windows, floors walls and ceilings through to furniture, soft furnishings and accessories, can really help you settle on a scheme that you re con dent in t ll ean that when it co es to a ing those nal choices or your own ho e you ll nd the decision making a lot easier, and your personality will have no choice but to shine through, as it so rightly deserves!” If ever you’re unsure, it’s always worth bringing in the professionals, who can advise on the newest options that are best for you. Indeed, they’ll often reveal things about your home, and how you can maximise its potential, that you’d never have seen yourself! So, if you’re itching to give your home a makeover but you’re looking for a second opinion to ensure you make the right call, why not contact Sue and the team? After all, there’s a reason they’re called Inspirational Interiors…

shouldn t your ho e be a reflection o you Green, in particular, is a colour that has seen a rapid resurgence over the past couple of years, Sue explains, with botanical wallpaper prints proving particularly popular. New printing techniques allow you to go bold with any pattern, and the same goes for fabrics! “Being brave with your interior design will encourage you to do the same when it comes to furnishings and accessories. Once you’ve created an inspiring backdrop, you’ll often nd yoursel oti ated to eep it going Believe me, once you start colouring in, you won’t want to stop!” But that’s not to say you have to go bold or do nothing. Instead, why not harness your individuality in other ways? Not everyone will love vivid colour and pattern, and Sue tells us a a r belie er in encouraging ariety not dictating my own style. We shouldn’t be slaves to new trends; they should serve us. A designer s ob is to rst understand the clients personality, and then help bring that out in the choices they present. “You may prefer subtle, restful tones, for instance, in which case we can tailor your options around those. This could be by using simple, plain, but tactile fabrics, such as linen, silk or velvet, or maybe a beautiful tonal jacquard of the ‘less is more’ school, letting the quality do the talking.” t s also ne according to ue i you want to keep a space white and clean. “Just think about how you can do this in a way that’s all about you.”

Daniel has worked for the family business for about ten years now, having joined the ranks at 16. Daniel went to college to complete a building apprenticeship, before constructing the brick bases for conservatories and orangeries installed by the company. He did this for about eight years, before moving into the o ce wor ing with custo er ser ices and now as a salesman. So, it’s fair to say that he knows every aspect of the business as well as anyone. What does Daniel love most about the job? “Without a doubt,” begins Daniel, “the greatest satisfaction is seeing the end result and the happy faces of our customers, once a job is completed. Creating the perfect home is so important to people and I love helping customers to realise their dreams, gi ing ad ice on per or ance and e ciency o products as well as their aesthetics.” Indeed, having been actively involved in everything from surveying and sales, installation to aftercare, he’s well placed to help you make the right choice for your home, both in terms of functionality and design. We meet Mark Lane, of Britannia Lanes, to discover how this inspiring Cornish business can help you move without the stress.
t’s that time of year when many of us are gearing up to move house in time for summer, perhaps even relocating to Cornwall to enjoy the fantastic lifestyle the county offers. | LIFESTYLE DID YOU KNOW? Britannia Lanes carries out international and European removals every week. The company offers a comprehensive range of container and self-storage solutions. For long distance UK moving, why not take advantage of oneway mileage, saving you £500 to £700. For an instant price guide see the removal price calculator on the Britannia Lanes website, as well as the many other services that are offered.
The whole approach is geared towards doing the hard work so you don’t have to; giving you more time to focus on what you really want to do – such as enjoying the lifestyle of living in Cornwall – this is so i portant to ar and the tea because they cherish the Cornish lifestyle too! ar lo es cycling around the county o ten travelling 50 to 60 miles on a weekend, taking a scenic route down to the west then back up the north coast; or taking the King Harry Ferry to t awes so eti es heading to The are Veryan. Another favourite spot is Porthleven, stopping for a coffee at the Brewhouse. This is all signi cant because the tea s love of their home county helps the company connect with customers’ needs. “I couldn’t thin o li ing anywhere else says ar “In the early days, when my brother and I were working on the trucks, we saw all manner of places. While it was great to visit wonderful places all over the UK, I was always glad to be back in Cornwall!” If you have a move coming up, or need a storage solution, why not contact Britannia Lanes now and see how they can help you start living the dream?
retaining that personal and inimitably Cornish touch. “We’re one big team,” says ar who is warm and easily approachable. “People come to work here and stay forever! We currently have four fathers and sons working in the business. We take great pride in what we do, actively engaging with customers, asking lots of questions to discover their needs and address them.” Britannia Lanes offers a tailored and bespoke approach for each customer. Whether it’s a short move round the corner, a relocation from Europe, or long-term storage, the tea can help you nd the solution for you. It could be something as simple as needing a short-term storage solution to keep your furniture safe, while you do that sitting room extension you’ve been talking about for years – the needs of the customer always remain at the forefront. The company has always been at the vanguard of innovation, helping to set industry standards, keen to lead the pack, rather than following it. A recent innovation is remote video surveys, via a downloadable app – perfect for those who live out of county. Another is the online real price calculator, providing you a quick guide quote for a job instantaneously just by answering a few simple questions.

You can’t put a price on being warm. Why not increase your living comfort by switching your home to air source heating?
re you looking to install new, more comfortable heating in your home? Maybe you’ve just moved home and you’re looking to invest in a friendlier heating system. Air source heating could be the ideal solution for ho eowners loo ing or a co er li ing environment, lower monthly bills and a lower carbon footprint. Air source heat pumps are renewable alternatives to gas and oil heating systems, generating heating and hot water from heat within the air and replacing demand from harmful fossil fuels. Working alongside most central heating setups, air source heating provides friendlier heat distribution and results in a co er ho e to li e in Whereas oil and gas boilers provide heat in short bursts, a heat pump provides steady heat more continuously over longer periods. This helps to prevent damp building up and maintains a kinder living environment. In effect, the temperature or the property should remain the same, despite drops in external temperature. The e ciency o heat pu ps co bined with how they supply heat over longer periods makes them far more cost-effective to run than their non-renewable counterparts – meaning less money leaving your account
each month. A heat pump can produce as much as four times the energy it consumes. As such, installing an air source heat pump can reduce monthly heating bills by as much as 50%. In addition to lower bills, customers installing air source heating can claim subsidy through Ofgem’s Renewable Heat Incentive scheme. The RHI pays homeowners quarterly to encourage the switch to renewable heating and lower their carbon emissions. Payments are deemed based on the demand of the property but can be as high as £1450 a year. Incentive payments and energy savings make air source heat pumps much more lucrative than money in the bank. For expert advice on renewable heating and how air source heating can bene t your home, contact GreenGenUK. The friendly team based in Helston have over seven years of experience designing and installing heat pump systems and are happy to provide all the information needed to make an informed decision.

s e l bb u b e th As OC Spas wins ‘Spa Retailer of the Year Gold Standard Award 2017’, it’s time to relax outside in the hot tub.
ith spring on the way, we’re itching to get back out into our gardens – and what better way to do so than slipping into a luxurious, soothing hot tub. Of course, the great thing about hot tubs is that they can be enjoyed any time of year, whatever the weather – ideal for those overcast days we’ve had too much of recently. With this in mind, we were excited to hear recently about a Cornish success story, with OC Spas making a splash on the national stage – the perfect excuse for cracking open some bubbles! The dealership was formed in 2015 by husband and wife team, Jonny and Lucy ottrell and within its rst year o business notched up two industry awards. This year the couple have won again, scooping the prestigious ‘Spa Retailer of the Year, Gold Standard Award’ at the UK Pool and Spa Awards in Birmingham. Christina Connor, publisher of Hot Tub and Swim Spa Scene magazine says of the awards: The co petition raises the pro le o the entire water leisure industry and recognises co panies that pro ide us with rst class hot tubs and swim spas.” Located next to Goonhavern Garden Centre near Truro, OC Spas is an exclusive Artesian Spas dealership, with a selection of hot tubs, swim spas, chemicals and accessories on display. “We offer all potential clients the opportunity to wet test
our showroom spas,” says Lucy. “We do this after opening hours where they get the showroom all to themselves, and we give them a couple of hours of pure indulgence. We have changing rooms, equipped with flu y towels and pas robes and a fridge fully stocked with prosecco!” Lucy continues: “Our clients appreciate a more discreet and sophisticated level of shopping. A hot tub is an extremely personal item, and the relationship they have with their chosen hot tub dealer doesn’t just stop at the point of purchase.” OC Spas stocks only the most luxurious hot tubs and accessories, its bestselling models being the Antigua and the Nevis, both from Artesian’s Island Spa range. The range offers a selection of hand-sculptured, high quality hot tubs, chosen for their hydrotherapy, energy e ciency water uality enhancing features and patented Helix jet design. The Island Spa range are among the highestperforming, best looking, premium spas on the market which always perform consistently at the top of their class.

CHARMS Delicious food accompanied by beautiful views is always something we are on the lookout for, and we discovered just that at the Godolphin Arms.
BELOW Wine and dine with scintillating views
ituated in Marazion with breathtaking views over the iconic St Michael’s Mount, the Godolphin Arms is a treat for the eyes as well as the taste buds. Summer is a great time to visit here, with bright days and gorgeous orange sunsets stretching out over the bay, but a crisp, early spring evening is also a perfect time to visit. With a comfy, cosy atmosphere and warming, locally-sourced, feelgood food; the Godolphin stretches out its arms to welcome you in from the cold. Recently refurbished, this highly recommended restaurant is the perfect hideaway to sit and enjoy drinks with friends or settle down to a tantalising three-course meal; the latter is exactly what we did. Walking in from the cold spring air, we were instantly charmed. Hit with a comforting warmth as we pushed open the glass doors, we ascended the chunky wooden staircase and waited at the host stand. Warmly welcomed by both the hostess, and the waiting staff that we met along the way, we were promptly led to our table. We felt instantly relaxed as we settled in a corner next to a sash window over-looking the majestic, gently-lit mount.

RIGHT The classic, Lushingtons Ale-battered fish and chips
The menu was a test; everything sounded so delicious and brilliantly showcased the quality of local Cornish produce. Dishes such as the seafood platter, pumpkin and cheese tagliatelle, mixed bean and curried lentil burger classic sh and chips seasonal boost salad and the tempting rib eye steak, not to mention the dishes listed on the specials menu. We deliberated for a long while before our waiter returned for the fourth time to take our order when we had nally settled on what we would like to try. With glasses of crisp Pinot Grigio and local ale, Doom Bar, in hand, we sat cosily and admired our surroundings. Chatting between us we would often comment on details of the interior that we liked, such as the bold artwork, thick oak tables and subtle lighting. We lapped up the atmosphere, a mix of families and couples, all donning smiles as they chatted and tried each dish. A good sign that we were in for a treat. For our starters, I went for the salt and chilli fried calamari with wasabi mayonnaise and opposite me sat the Cornish beer-battered cod goujons. Both were gorgeous! The goujons especially were a hit; I must admit, one went missing from my partner’s plate when he wasn’t looking. To follow I was presented with a delightful board of locally-sourced mussels accompanied by slices of toasted ciabatta. The mussels were served in a stylish black enamel pot, the mouth-watering smell of the creamy white wine sauce hitting you as you lift the lid. My partner chose the signature homemade beef burger complemented by spiced tomato and onion chutney, the perfect winter warmer. Next was dessert. We waited about 20 inutes a ter nishing our ains too ull to contemplate anything else for a while. However, after being shown the tempting selection of sweets on the menu, we couldn’t say no. My partner decided to go for the
seasonal, poached apple and sultana crumble and I chose the white chocolate baked Alaska from the specials menu. Neither disappointed. Spiced and sweet, the crumble hit exactly the right spot to face that spring sea air again and the baked Alaska was a light and smooth addition to the end of the meal. It was something I had been meaning to try for a while and I was very pleased that I did! With amazing food, a great atmosphere, beautiful décor and service to match, I have already recommended the Godolphin Arms to a ily and riends This is de nitely somewhere that we will be coming back to again and again. aving forged a friendship over several years, when the opportunity came up for Rachel and Jane to take over The Old Lifeboat House, they snapped it up. Jane, who had been a London based accountant for more than 20 years, had decided that it was a time for a change of pace and so relished the opportunity to set up a life in Cornwall on the south coast. Rachel, having grown up in Newlyn, felt moving to Cornwall was the natural choice, especially after the tumultuous time her and her son Lake had had during in his early years growing up with a life-threatening condition. As soon as she and Jane saw the bistro, with its uninterrupted views of Penzance harbour, they knew it was the opportunity they’d been looking for. As the name suggests, the bistro is located in an old lifeboat house, and the building has been beautifully restored. There are plans to work with the RNLI in the coming months, with the aim of focussing both on the history of the building, as well as highlighting the courageous work of the local lifeboat crews over the years.
The bistro is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, offering daily seafood specials and using predominantly local produce. And, this coming summer, Rachel and Jane will be introducing a new special to the menu – Bubbles and Pearls. Jane tells us: “Following the success of offering fresh oysters last summer, we’ll be offering them with a glass of bubbly alongside.” Impressively, throughout the season last year, the bistro remained one of Penzance’s top restaurants, as rated by both Google and Trip d isor! ane nishes This year will see some slight chances to the menu, but we’ll remain focussed on maintaining our reputation for using locally sourced seafood at reasonable prices.” It’s even dog friendly, and what could possibly be better than settling down with some ‘Bubbles and Pearls’, a bowl of water or the hound and ta ing in the agni cent harbour views?

verlooking the Camel estuary, Greens of Padstow has become a year-round haven for foodies and nature lovers alike, being privy to views over the estuary and the many species it’s home to, as well as the sumptuous menus on offer in the licensed café. And the team is about to do one better! The site used to be home to a mini golf course, which, as you can imagine, was incredibly popular with both visitors and locals, especially considering the site’s beautiful location. While the 18 holes are currently playable, owner Sharon Whittock shares with us the team’s plans to completely overhaul the course, creating what will be, in effect, a whole new course. “Now that we have the café properly up and running, we’re beginning the ‘second phase’ of Greens’ development, which is to totally renew the mini golf, the site’s original business.” The course, according to Sharon, is now ready for extensive planting, and the aim is to create gardens around each hole, honouring the beauty of the site using four planting themes: ‘Cornish orchard’, 'Cornish cliff and grassland’, ‘Cornish woodland garden’ and ‘Cornish subtropical’. “Each of the golf holes has been contoured
and sculpted to provide playing challenges. However, the intention is to enrich and diversify the landscape and the playing experience through further creative physical interventions within the holes themselves. These may be sculptural or constructional. They may be created out of readymade or recycled elements, natural materials or bespoke pieces. They may be useable for only a season, or could last a lifetime. The point is that they should be ingenious, fun, thought provoking and engagingly beautiful.” We’re told that the intention is to commission 18 of these pieces over three years, one for each hole. The planting is set to begin after half term and the course will be open to play as of Easter, before the rolling programme of enhancing each hole begins. Combined with the quality food on offer at Greens café, the course will make Greens of Padstow the perfect place to spend an afternoon with the kids while enjoying one of the nest estuary iews ornwall has to o er

pring is just around the corner and, for those of you who are already thinking about menus for springtime dinner parties and evenings spent enjoying quality time over a meal and a glass of wine, lamb may well be on your agenda. New-season lamb, often referred to as ‘spring lamb’ offers a tender sweetness that’s absolutely perfect for Easter roast dinners. The butchers at Etherington’s Farm Shop near Scorrier have, between them, more than 70 years of experience and this Easter, instead of opting for a traditional roast, they’re encouraging Cornish foodies to choose an impressive rack of lamb. Taken from the most-tender part of the animal, it not only looks impressive, but tastes incredible too, especially when cooked pink and eaten off the bone. All you need to do is decide how best to prepare your special Easter dinner. Here are just a few ideas from the team at Etherington’s. If you’re a fuss-free cook, Etherington’s recommend simply brushing the meat with a little oil, seasoning with salt and pepper and searing in a hot pan to loc in the fla our before roasting in a pre-heated oven at 180°C for 15 to 20 minutes. r i you en oy a spot o oodie flair Etherington’s Scott Buzza suggests adding
a herb crust, which will golden in the oven and add different textures to the dish. Lamb’s rich fla our eans it co bines well with vibrant ingredients, from fruit and yoghurt, to pesto, paprika and curry spices. For a fresh taste, Scott explains how you can use breadcrumbs, a good handful of freshly chopped mint, rosemary and two garlic cloves, as well as a dollop of mustard and a pinch of parmesan (all blended) to create the crust paste. Season the lamb and flash ry in a hot s illet on all sides or 30 seconds, before placing in a pre-heated 180°C oven for ten minutes. Remove your lamb from the oven and add your chosen crust to the fattiest side, be ore returning it to the heat or e to ten minutes. Finally, remove, cover and leave to stand for ten minutes, before serving with dauphinoise potatoes, buttered spring vegetables, a red wine jus and, of course, a hearty glass of Pinot Noir or Châteauneufdu-Pape. The last thing to do is enjoy – we know we will!

Newell’s growth and success is down to hard work, excellent professional staff and innovative thinking, so it’s no wonder the nation’s leading tour operators continuously vote for the company in national awards! On the subject of innovative thinking, Newell’s second cruise show last October saw the launch of the Ocean and River Cruise Club (OARCC), led by newly appointed Cruising Manager, Nick Pritchard, who brings 44 years’ experience in the industry to the table, as well as personal knowledge of many cruise lines and their ships. He’s responsible for developing OARCC, with assistance from recently appointed Cruise Ambassadors in each of Newell’s 11 retail branches. Cruising is the fastest growing market in the travel industry and Newell’s TRAVEL, with the introduction of OARCC, is way ahead of the game.

There are many elements that need pulling together in order to create a fabulous cruise holiday. A cruise encompasses several individually crafted holidays, pre and post-hotels, city tours and trans ers as well as excursions fly cruises ro local airports and no fly cruises ro UK ports. That’s a lot to organise! Many cruise ships are, quite literally, floating holiday resorts pac ed with innovative and thrilling activities for the whole family to enjoy. And the wellestablished luxury cruise liners have just got better, placing six-star luxury (that’s right!) and amazing cuisine at the top of their priority list. Others design the experience around travellers who want to understand the culture, history and wonders of each and every stop. There are also niche cruises which concentrate on unusual excursions, as well as smaller cruise ships, able to reach places that larger vessels simply can’t. Also growing in popularity are river cruises, and these specially designed river ships do not want for luxury! They allow you to sail down some of the world’s most beauti ul ri ers in your own floating hotel often mooring right in the heart of the towns as you pass through, meaning accessibility for sightseeing has never been easier. All river cruises have excursions too, so you can get a real insight into the local culture of the areas you visit.
INSET Amalfi coast – Pompeii, Capri and The Bay of Naples
With cruise holidays gaining popularity, Newell’s TRAVEL is well placed to match any prices on the high street, as well as regularly beating internet prices on holiday destinations all over the world. Newell’s TRAVEL holds an annual travel show in Truro and this year, the show will be celebrating its 30th anniversary. They will welcome more than 40 of the UK’s top tour operators on the Piazza, Lemon Quay, Truro on Sunday 18th March, where they’ll be ready and able to chat face to face with the general public. Arguably the most anticipated features of the show are its cinema sessions and this year, nine diverse companies will be displaying their fascinating presentations, inspiring you to book the trip of a lifetime. The best part is that the show’s main sponsor, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines has kindly donated a river cruise for two worth more than £1000, and all you need to do to be in with a chance of winning is attend – just be sure to register when you arrive!
DISCOVER MORE Cinema seats are limited to 60 at any one time, so if you’re interested in visiting one or more of the presentations, be sure to pre-register to avoid disappointment at www.newellstravel.co.uk/travel-show

Helston’s Outback Trading has everything you need to comfortably traverse Cornwall’s great outdoors. WORDS BY DAN WARDEN
Director Ian and team é ABOVE Life outdoors is better with the right equipment
RIGHT Comfort is key when it comes to hiking, especially at this time of year!
lso offering a growing a range of sportswear, Outback Trading is one of Cornwall’s only independent outdoor suppliers. Director Ian, with more than 20 years of experience running his own businesses, explains how the team is regularly invited to attend showrooms around the country, learning all they need to know about the industry’s top brands. He then introduces me to his colleague Laura, who he explains has completed a degree in textiles. This expertise gives her a good grip on how products work from a technical point of view, meaning she can analyse the bene ts that certain products bring to the end user. Between them, the team sources only the best mid to high-end brands, which means that while they do offer a sterling aftercare service, they’re often not required to, thanks to the sheer quality of the wares they sell. Take Jack Wolfskin, for example. Relatively new to Outback Trading, Ian tells me they could no longer ignore the quality of this German brand’s apparel. “Most important to us is offering our customers the best. People buy brand when it comes to outdoor gear, and there’s a reason for that.” Thanks to his wealth of experience, Ian is an expert when it comes to sourcing great
deals on stock. “We sell a lot of swimming equipment, for instance, and when we’re able to get stock discounts, we pass them straight on to the customer.” The store continues to grow its range of sportswear, including equipment for golf, football and rugby, but something that has and will likely always remain at the forefront is its range of walking apparel. Whether you’re just starting out, or are a seasoned adventurer, the team knows there’s nothing worse than forking out for a new pair of boots, only to ha e the all apart a ter your rst outing Brands include Meindl, Merell, Scarpa, Lowa, Keen and Zamberlan – and that’s just shoes and boots! There’s also a fantastic range o coats fleeces and ac ets ro top brands including The North Face, Jack Wolfskin, Mammut and Paramo. So if you’ve decided to make the most of Cornwall’s landscape this year, make sure you’re prepared for everything the great outdoors might throw at you with a trip to Outback Trading.

s k n a B a n n e rw o M We catch up with the actor, voice artist and screenwriter to learn more about growing up in Cornwall, Peppa Pig, and the return of her hit sitcom, Damned.
orwenna Banks has an impressive resume of TV and radio credits, both as an actor and writer, having appeared in everything from Skins to Shameless; The Thick of It to Rupert the Bear and Saturday Night Live. Those with young children will most likely recognise her as Mummy Pig, Madame Gazelle and a host of other characters in Peppa Pig. Morwenna was born and raised in Cornwall, often returning with her children.
With Damned back on our screens, please could you tell us a bit about how the series originally came about.
“Well, Jo Brand and I are very old friends. We always look for opportunities for a vat of coffee and a good natter. Writing Damned provided an excellent opportunity. Also, we were both really interested in the territory and wanted to do something both funny and quite hard-hitting. Jo was a psychiatric nurse and her mum was a social worker so there was a wealth of experience for us to draw
on and we work closely with a practitioner who advises us on protocol and on what might happen in certain situations. For the Channel 4 series we asked the very talented writer Will Smith to join our team. It was a challenge seeing if we could make a subject so inherently di cult unny but it was good challenge.”
Are there any surprises in store for the new series? “We’ve got a new regular character this series Mimi – played by Lolly Adefope. She is excellent as the millennial student social worker who comes along and challenges the old guard, especially with her views on gender politics. There’s an unexpected romance or two e e also got so e terri c guest stars including some brilliant new talents. We’ve gone to some very dark places with our storylines but we always try to counter them with lots of laughs. I think every episode has its own element of surprise – our characters never do quite what you might expect.”

Do you prefer writing or performing? “I love doing both to be honest. I feel very lucky to be able to write and act. Sometimes acting in other things is lovely – just to turn up and not feel responsible for all the words. On the other hand with writing I can hide behind my computer and dress in comforting elasticated leisurewear every day, so that has its own charm. I love doing voices for animations too. Basically I like it all and I know how rare that is to actually enjoy going to work.”
Which projects are you proudest of being involved with? “I’ve been lucky enough to have worked with some incredible people on so many really interesting pro ects ne o the rst things did professionally was the Channel 4 sketch show, Absolutely. We had a tremendous amount of freedom and got to experiment with a lot of comic characters. I was happy with both the radio drama, Goodbye, and Miss You Already a eature l starring rew Barrymore, Toni Collette, Paddy Considine and o inic ooper as both pro ects were ery personal and when I wrote them I wanted to raise awareness about young women and breast cancer Than s to the agni cent casts of both – we were able to make that happen. And, of course, I’m proud of being Mummy Pig and Madame Gazelle in Peppa Pig! No-one was prepared for the phenomenon of Peppa. All I can say is that the creators, Neville Astley and Mark Baker are brilliant, truly creative, lovely people and were as shocked as anyone that this success came their way. Who knows what the key is – excellent funny writing, brilliant designs, honesty and of course the voices are what really make it special. (Joke)”
I’ve been lucky enough to have worked with some incredible people on so many really interesting projects MORWENNA BANKS
Do you have any particularly special memories from growing up in Cornwall? “Rowing in my little pram dinghy on the river Fal, dropping anchor and doing my homework as the sun went down… Hearing the strains of the ballad ‘White Rose’ drift through the salty night air into my bedroom window from the pub next door when I was child – like a lovely beery lullaby.”
Dave King / Channel 4 Picture Publicity
é ABOVE The cast of Damned starring Jo Brand and Alan Davies
Do you have a favourite beach or walk in Cornwall and why? “Well I do but I’m reluctant to share them!”
What do you love most about Cornwall? “I can’t even begin. In my opinion it’s one of the best places in the world. I’ve recently become Patron of the Cornish company ra a xpress a dra a group or young people with disabilities. It was set up in response to a continuing need for young people with disabilities to be represented through the performing arts. So I’m glad that young people are getting the chance to have these experiences and I love that an initiative like this exists in Cornwall.”
What one thing would you recommend that everyone does upon visiting Cornwall? “Cheer loudly when they cross the Tamar bridge.”

Having only been launched late last year, Cornwall Hospice Care’s Neighbourhood Hub teams are already doing some amazing work.
Drop in sessions at the Neighbourhood Hubs provide opportunities for advice from healthcare professionals
RIGHT Therapy Manager, Michelle Earle
ast year we reported on Cornwall Hospice Care’s new community service, Neighbourhood Hubs. The Cornish charity has two, at Wadebridge and Penzance, with plans to open around six more before the end of this year. The idea is to offer support and information to people living in the community with terminal illnesses. Dawn Tame-Battell is the Director of Patient Services at Cornwall Hospice Care. She tells us: “It’s about providing the right care at the right time and in the right place. We want to help people earlier in their disease or illness, so we’re not just here at the very end, but supporting them so they can live as well as possible for as long as possible. We hope, through the hubs, to reach a further 1,000 people a year.” The hubs opened last October, and they’re already making a difference to patients like ex ex was the ery rst patient at the Penzance Neighbourhood Hub. He began walking a little more each day, building up his exercise tolerance and independence. It was good to see him cheered by on his successes and he started planning to return to the choir he so enjoys being a part of.” Unfortunately Rex became less well just before Christmas and developed a chest infection. At this point, he was too poorly to visit the hospice for his treatment, so the physiotherapist went to see him at home instead to offer treatment and advice about his ongoing care. Happily he made a good recovery and didn’t have to go to hospital, which he says was a real plus. “The Hub team have helped make my life so much better and were instrumental in keeping me out of hospital this time. It’s good to know the team by name and to have that personal contact. I have to say the treatments have made such a difference to me. The hub and the hospice are fantastic places with wonderful people.”

PERFECT We meet the trio behind Cathedral Dental, a family friendly practice offering everything you need to win back that glorious smile.
Smile! The Cathedral Dental experts
INSET The newly refurbished practice lives up to the standards of modern dentistry
peaking to Alex Willmore, Fergus Brown and Kyle Talbot – partners at Cathedral Dental Practice – it quickly becomes clear that this isn’t your average family dental practice. The trio took on the practice in 2016, when the previous owner retired and offered them the chance to run it themselves. Alex tells us: “The practice was already well set up, so we just had to make it ours!” Since taking it on, they’ve trained themselves in a number of advanced treatments, including Invisalign Go – an alternative to conventional wire and brac et xed braces non surgical cos etic treatments including wrinkle reduction, and der al llers to s ooth creases and lines around the outh and nose area as well as ere en treat ent or aw pain and teeth whitening treat ents e also bene t ro being able to offer comprehensive hygiene treatments to our patients.” Fergus explains: “Many think of us as a family practice, and that’s certainly true. However, we’ve become much more than that.” The practice recently went through a major refurbishment, which included the addition of a new surgery room. As a result, they tell us, “we can now take on more new patients which is something we haven't been able to do for some time.”
Perhaps the most impressive part, however, is the professionalism and uali cation e ident in each e ber o the team, including all 14 support staff. “Our support staff are fantastic, and are well trained in giving patients an overview of what treatments are available and how we can help with speci c issues “This is crucial, because we’re not just here or routine chec ups and llings although of course, these are an important part of the ob we ha e a wide range o new ser ices on offer, and it’s essential that our patients feel like they’re well looked after from the very beginning of the consultation process.” Alex, Fergus and Kyle encourage all patients to pop in and discuss their unique circumstances and the solutions available. “We are a very friendly local practice, and the thing that sets us apart from others is that patients here really do get the best of both worlds, in terms of general dental care and more bespoke treatment options.”

KNOWLEDGE Cornwall Hospice Care is working hard to ensure the quality of knowledge of our future doctors and palliative care givers.
DISCOVER MORE The charity recently ran its first free training session for GPs at St Julia’s Hospice, with a great turn out. The aim is to help GPs increase their knowledge and skills in palliative care. Any GPs interested in future opportunities can email email@example.com to find out more.
ornwall Hospice Care’s Dr Jane Gibbins recently spoke at a conference in Manchester about the provision of tuition for medical students. The event was run by the General Medical Council (GMC) and Hospice UK and the aims were two fold: to set the scene about the current provision of palliative care and end-of-life care teaching to medical students during their undergraduate training, knowing that this can be an overwhelming area of care or the when they start as newly uali ed doctors; to consider how such tuition can be improved in the future. Dr Jane was asked by Dr Bee Wee – the National Clinical Director for End of Life Care – to present research from a small national group of researchers. They’ve collaborated to obtain a clear picture of what palliative care teaching is taking place and where. The results, according to Jane, show that there’s a huge variability. Some medical schools provide extensive teaching programmes, while others provide very little. There was a clear agreement that hands-on learning with patients and their families is the best possible type of learning, although this isn’t always possible in all medical schools. Dr Jane tells us: “The discussions have enabled open reflection on what we pro ide for our future doctors at Cornwall Hospice Care in our partnership with Exeter Medical School. Medical students have weekly handson clinical placements within both our hospices, where they’re able to overcome fears and misconceptions about what hospices do. They also observe a wide range of healthcare professionals all providing quality care to patients. “We’re fortunate to be able to provide such meaningful experiences for our students. We know they rate this highly as they nominated
our Palliative Care Team as the Best Clinical Teachers in 2017, a real achievement for the tea and proo o the bene ts our partnership provides.” Cornwall Hospice Care’s passion for sharing knowledge and expertise with the medics of the future was formally acknowledged recently by Anna Broadbent, a student from the University of Exeter. She was able to spend time working on a research project with Dr Jane and the results have since been published by the European Journal of Palliative Care. Anna’s work also won a runners-up prize for medical students in a competition run by the Royal Society of Medicine looking at innovations in palliative care.

LIFE CHANGING DENTISTRY At Pure we have decades of combined experience providing Advanced Dental Solutions. These days nobody needs to be troubled by their teeth. All of the images below are of real clients.
“My experience with Pure and with Mark has been absolutely amazing. Completely restored my faith in dentistry. What I can eat now and what I can do now and how my life has changed now is immense. I got my sparkle back, I’ve got my confidence back. What Mark and his team have done for me has completely changed my life.” - Mrs D.
“I needed a serious course of work done so went to visit a few places both locally and in London. I have nothing but praise for all the staff, there is a genuine warmth to the welcome, and couple that with the professionalism shown by all, especially Mark, and one cannot help but feel in safe hands.” - Mr P.
“I wanted Teeth in a Day because if I’m going to have it done I want it done and over with. Family and friends can’t believe they are not real teeth… they also like the confidence they have given me. I’m free again. I was looked after from start to finish. You won’t be frightened from the minute you meet his team. I was the most nervous patient you could ever meet. Now after all I’ve had done I’m not scared at all.” - Mrs S.
“Having suffered from gum disease, I started losing my teeth, along with my confidence and smile, I was in pain and couldn’t eat… I was terrified of the dentist. On arrival.., it felt like I was entering a spa, such a lovely calm and welcoming atmosphere. I decided on Teeth in a Day. I had the procedure in April and I’m still amazed every day at the incredible results.” - Mrs S.
“Changing dentist after a 20 year relationship with my former dentist was a big decision. In moving to Mark at Pure I have found an exceptional practitioner whose skill and professionalism have both significantly improved my teeth and given me the confidence to smile again.” - Mr M.
“I spent 40 years covering my mouth with my hand when smiling or eating and I finally plucked up the courage to visit Mark at Pure. I had bone grafts, implants, crowns and veneers. Mark is innovative and a complete perfectionist. I love the results and can now smile with total confidence.” - Mrs SS.

Award-winning charity Trelya helps Cornwall’s most disadvantaged families and children, providing support, activities and stability.
ABOVE RIGHT This inspiring Cornish charity helps give disadvantaged children a helping hand and a more promising future BELOW The Lescudjack Centre, in Penzance
ornwall has consistently been voted the number one tourism destination in Britain, and yet in this haven of peace and tranquillity lies an often overlooked situation of poverty. In fact, Penzance, with its historic port, tropical gardens, mild climate and stunning beaches is actually home to the most deprived neighbourhood in Cornwall. Trelya’s mission is to break the generational cycle of social and economic deprivation; to enable children, young people and families facing the greatest challenges to develop the skills, knowledge, awareness, motivation and aspirations necessary to break the cycle of deprivation and build safe, positive and ul lling utures The team operates out of the Lescudjack Centre, which as well as providing space for Trelya’s activities offers local groups and businesses rental space for events and meetings. This in turn helps support the valuable programmes and community work undertaken by Trelya’s professional team of youth workers. They run a number of projects that actively seek out children, young people and families that need support, working with them to address key issues and help them make healthy choices about their lives and futures, all with the overriding aim of enabling them to break the cycle of social exclusion for good. Cat Keene, Director of Programmes and Operations at Trelya, tells us: “Some kids dread going to school as they often don’t have a clean uniform, and know that they’ll get into trouble for not having a PE kit, or for being late because no one was there to wake them up.” Police Constable Jodie Fellows, who has been involved with Trelya as Youth nter ention cer or est ornwall says “My experience with Trelya has lead me to recognise it as a very effective organisation in working with vulnerable and at-risk children and young people, and enabling change in di cult circu stances Trelya runs ground-breaking programmes, including SKYLAR, which works with identi ed arginalised ulnerable u s helping them bond with and nurture their children and build their skills as parents.
They also run Friends of the Children, a pioneering mentoring scheme that’s had huge success in the Trelya is the rst international a liate o the progra e which provides intensive, community based, long-term support to the most at risk children, assigning each child their own dedicated project worker, who helps them at school, at home, on the street and/or at Trelya.
