can’t quite believe that I’m welcoming you to the Christmas edition. The year seems to have gone in a flash and what a year it has been In light of the ups and downs of 0 0, I thought it was high time we all treated ourselves to some well-deserved relaxation. With that in mind, I investigated the art of ‘hygge’, the Danish idea of getting cosy, perfect for a festive time when traditional parties might not be on the agenda. Think candles, roaring fires, cosy throws, hot chocolates and more turn to page 23 to find out how to add some hygge to your life. As we’re all spending more time at home, it’s also a great time to think about lavishing that with love as well. From page 36, we have interior ideas from fine furniture to outdoor dining, carpets, kitchens and more. No Christmas edition would be complete without a few last minute present ideas so from page 62 we have some artwork to inspire. I would also like to say a huge congratulations to our cover image competition winner Graham Buxton for providing us with this issue’s cover artwork. We felt that this festive image of St Ives, lit up in all its glory, really captured the essence of Christmas in Cornwall. That just leaves me to wish you a very merry Christmas from all of us here at Cornwall Living, may your season be a jolly one. tay safe and

2020 has certainly been a year we will not soon forget, which is why Cornish Cottage Holidays would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to its supportive owners and guests, who have worked with the team through the ever-changing Covid-19 pandemic. “This year we saw a boom in staycations here in Cornwall,” explains Andrew Jay from the Cornish Cottage Holidays team, “and we predict this trend really is here to stay. We have seen a huge surge in demand this year for holidays in the UK. Over the summer months, our booking occupancy was over 97% and we expect this trend to continue throughout 2021.” This means that now is the perfect time to join the growing Cornish Cottage Holidays portfolio of wonderful holiday properties. Demand is currently outstripping supply, according to Andrew, “and we would like to invite you to get in touch with our knowledgeable property team for a free no-obligation

Rest assured, we are here to help, so if you are looking at different properties and would like us to provide an income projection to help inform your decision, please do give us a call!” For more information call 01326 336773 (select option 2) or visit www.cornishcottageholidays.co.uk

Recycle your unworn jewellery
Choose ColourFence this winter Winter brings many challenges for gardeners, from maintaining the borders once the annuals are gone and the perennials pruned, to raking leaves and storing garden furniture. Over the years, ColourFence Cornwall, with more than 1,000 installations across the region, have been reducing the impact of the changing seasons. With emptier borders, installing a new fence at this time of year promises to disturb far fewer plants. Your new fence will also provide sturdy defence against storms, and a stunning backdrop when spring rolls around, with no painting required.
ColourFence can withstand gusts of up to 130mph; it won’t rust, peel, rot or warp, and in fact, most customers consider it to be ‘weather proof’. It’s also designed to be
incredibly versatile and can even accommodate storage to prevent bins from blowing away. In fact, such is the strength and versatility of ColourFence, that it comes with an impressive maintenance-free guarantee – for 25 years! Interested? Then be sure to arrange your free quote! For more information call 01637 222578 or visit www.colourfencecornwall.co.uk
The sky’s the limit
Justin Duance can remodel your unworn jewellery using his unique method of sandcasting. The gold is melted and cast into a mould made with beach sand (you can even choose the beach). Not only does this create the texture on the jewellery, little grains are caught in the metal too. It’s the perfect way to carry a bit of Cornwall (or anywhere) with you, wherever you go. Your own heirloom gold and stones can be transformed into new and exciting jewellery to be worn and treasured every day. What’s more, not only is recycling your existing materials better for the planet, it’s also easier on your pockets, all whilst giving unmatched sentimental value to your gorgeous new piece. For more information call 01736 367254 or visit www.justind.co.uk

News & views Three cheers for the Cornish community When a cry for help goes up, the Cornish always answer. Thanks to communities across the county, an appeal to keep beds open at Cornwall’s two adult hospices has raised nearly half its target in just one month. Cornwall Hospice Care launched Terry’s Bed Appeal at the start of October with a personal letter from a patient who wrote before he died: “When I needed it, when I was feeling frightened and disturbed, this beautiful hospice had a bed for me and it felt like a gift. I’d be devastated if my bed closed.”
Are you making
the most of your property? Lately our homes have become more multifunctional, with an increase in people under one roof, all trying to find their own space. With many of us working from home too, it’s important our interiors work well to meet our changing requirements. Chloe Woods Interiors will not only source furniture and finishes to improve your interior, but also look at the potential of your entire space. “I start by evaluating how effectively existing rooms are being used,” Chloe explains. “An improved layout will maximise space and create zones that cater to the different functions we are now increasingly doing from home.” So, are you making the most of your property? If you’re unsure, Chloe will be happy to discuss your project, so be sure to get in touch. For more information call 07803 724297 or email email@example.com
Terry’s message struck a chord and the appeal has already raised £110,000 of the £250,000 target. Oli Hoare from Cornwall Hospice Care says: “The Cornish community is amazing! It’s thanks to our friends and supporters that Terry’s Bed Appeal has almost reached the half way stage in just
four weeks. Despite lockdowns our two hospices have remained open 24/7, and will continue to do so.” For more information call 01726 66868 (option 3) or visit cornwallhospicecare. co.uk/terrysappeal

As featured on Grand Designs in 2018 and devised by family run firm, Cornish Masonry toves, The omeheater has to be one of the UK’s best value masonry stove log burners. Combining cutting-edge technology with ancient candinavian design, this locally made modern masonry stove is highly e cient at %. Added to that is the remarkably low flue temperature of just 1 C, about half or a third of others in its class. It can heat a small home for 10 hours on just one small fire, meaning less fuel, costs, soot, and a lower carbon footprint. It works by absorbing heat into a ceramic interior flue system, which then releases it slowly. Managing irector, uy, says It’s been hard for everyone during lockdown, but for us, after the good publicity with Grand Designs and Irish television’s Great House Revival, we are actually looking to expand to larger premises, preferably in north Cornwall. A range of craft beers which has gradually been released throughout the year welcomes a fourth addition this month, completing the series. ‘Cove’ by The Driftwood Spars Brewery celebrates the village of St Agnes in all its glory. Stunning coastal scenery, historic locations, local ingredients, folkloric tales and community spirit have all been the inspiration for this contemporary canned range, which has caught the attention of beer enthusiasts across the UK. H YG G E Embracing the Scandi approach to a Cornish Christmas.
t the time of writing none of us are sure what Christmas will look like this year. We thought that whatever happens we should be prepared to make the festive season a fun one no matter the restrictions. In light of this, we have taken inspiration from our Danish cousins to bring you our top ten tips for embracing a Cornish ‘hygge’ Christmas. In order to fully embrace hygge, we must first understand what it is. ronounced 'hoog-ga', it’s certainly something that is hard to sum up in a literal one-word translation. It’s more a general feeling of
contentment and well-being, it’s creating a cosy environment in which you can be happy, it’s finding the extraordinary in the ordinary and fostering a sense of comfort and kinship. ‘Hygge’ has been part of Danish culture since the 1800s, helping to combat its famously miserable and long winters. As the Cornish winter of 2020 is likely to be one of discontent for many, now more than ever it’s essential to embrace the simple pleasures, take comfort in our homes and enjoy what we have around us.

Shining bright Let’s kick it all off with the humble candle. Used across the world as a symbol of hope and remembrance, a candle can bring light and joy to any room. Scented candles will take your feeling of hygge to the next level and where better to buy them from than right here in Cornwall? St Eval (st-eval.com) crafts sweet-smelling candles by hand, using traditional artisan methods to make every candle unique. Be uplifted by the fresh scent of cucumber and black pepper or thyme and mint relax the mind with lavender or geranium or feel festive with figgy pudding
Keeping the home fires burning
Create an oasis of calm with a St Eval Candle ê BELOW Kernow Fires, keeping the home fires burning
Cosying up in front of a fire couldn’t be more relaxing. Radiating its warmth on wet afternoons or dark evenings, a fire soothes the soul. The soporific flicker of the flames is enough to envelop you in contentment and if you are lucky enough to have a woodburner or an open fire, then the enticing smell of wood smoke adds to the ambience. Kernow Fires (kernowfires.co.uk) has been keeping Cornwall warm for many years and offers a vast range of contemporary and traditional stoves. And if you don’t have a chimney, don’t despair, Kernow Fires is also a supplier of the cutest electric mini stoves from Everhot, which not only heat the room but can also cook you up a casserole for tea.
Cuddle up If you’re cuddling up in front of the fire, then to create the ultimate hygge festive magic you will need some luxurious pyjamas, cosy slippers or socks and a blanket to wrap around your shoulder. Don’t feel you have to wait until the big day to treat yourself, embrace being at home and dress down with the best. Jo and Co (joandcohome.com) is a home, interior and lifestyle store in Wadebridge. Jo and the team are great advocates of self-care and their Hibernation Collection is perfect for getting cosy this Christmas. From the softest cotton pyjamas to pure new wool throws you’ll be spoiled for choice, whether pampering yourself or buying that extra special gift. They offer delivery across the UK so wherever you are you can be sure of some Cornish contentment.
Jo and Co pyjamas are the perfect way to relax
Rediscover reading for a moment of peace
If you are unable to travel far this Christmas then why not transport yourself on an armchair voyage of discovery Rediscovering old classics or finding new adventures is a real treat and a chance to spend some quiet time away from the distractions of screens and devices. And you could even create your own hyggekrog’ es, it’s a real thing, translating as a comfortable place to sit, and better to enjoy a good book than a cosy nook. ou might have a favourite place to sit already but you can hygge it to the next level with the addition of blankets, fairy lights and a foot stool.

Embracing a craft gets you double hygge points. Not only is crafting therapeutic, it also means you can make some beautiful festive decorations for your home. Don’t be afraid, you don’t have to be an experienced crafter to produce something very effective. Simple white paper snowflakes can look really effective and are as easy as child’s play – so something the whole family can create – and there are lots of tutorials online to guide you. range pomanders will fill your home with the scent of Christmas, simply follow our step by step guide (right) for some festive fun
Al fresco feasting
Hygge embodies the idea of togetherness and what better way than to come together over some tasty treats? Think comfort food; steaming bowls of nourishing soup, freshly baked bread and tempting sweet cakes or pastries are all a sure-fire way to fill your home with yuletide yumminess. Source your ingredients locally wherever you can to ensure quality and provenance, and don’t forget that an important part of hygge is to embrace the outdoors as well. If you’ve not tried it, then a winter barbeque is a must Visit Heart, Smoke & Soal (heartsmokesoal.co.uk) for some great ideas on creating the ultimate outdoor cooking area and recipe inspiration, or turn to page 38 to find out more.
Cheers! Once you’ve cooked up a feast then you’ll need a warming drink to accompany it. A hygge drink is something to be savoured, something indulgent, and enjoyed all the more after a bracing walk or surf in the sea. There’s nothing like a nip in the air to make you enjoy a hot drink all the more. Think indulgent hot chocolate, a steaming mug of tea or a strong coffee, and if you fancy something a bit stronger, then a warming mulled wine or cider will warm the cockles. Cornwall has some incredible artisan drinks producers; visit cornwall-living.co.uk to discover some of our favourites.
Best foot forward As we’ve already discovered, hygge not only encompasses getting cosy at home, it’s also about appreciating the great outdoors, and here in Cornwall we are so fortunate to have an incredible choice of places to explore right on our doorstep. Achieving that feeling of well-being can come from a long cliff walk, a ramble through some of Cornwall’s woodlands, parks and gardens or indeed a dip in the sea (wildswimmingcornwall.co.uk) – all of which will ensure you get a good dose of fresh air and, if the sun’s shining, a dose of mood – and immune-boosting vitamin D. National Trust (nationaltrust.org) gardens are currently still open for exploration and are a great choice if you need a gentle stroll with ease of parking.
GET CRAFTY HOW TO MAKE A POMANDER YOU WILL NEED: Oranges, lemons or limes Festive ribbon Needle or skewer Whole cloves Take your ribbon and wrap it around your chosen fruit like a parcel – dividing it into quarters – and tie in a bow. Using your needle or skewer, pierce the skin in straight lines, swirling patterns or at random about 0.5cm apart and push a clove into each hole, making sure all of the area between the ribbons is covered. Place your pomanders somewhere warm and airy for a few weeks to let the fruit dry out. Hang them up or create a scented table display.

Welcome in the great outdoors
é ABOVE Unique wreaths add a festive feel ê BELOW Enjoying the great outdoors
Being at one with nature is another important strand of the hygge way of life, but how do we interact with the natural elements in winter? One way is to bring the outside in – throw open windows and let the fresh air flow – does the thought of that make you shiver? Then don a big cosy jumper and embrace it! Similarly, remember the ‘hyggekrog’ we talked about creating earlier? Why not create yours next to a window and enjoy the view! Alternatively, a sustainably grown Christmas tree will bring a natural element to your home this Christmas and infuse your room with the authentic smell of spruce. Or adorn your door with a natural wreath to welcome in the spirit of Christmas – we love hollyandroots.com for their unique designs, all made here in Cornwall using British farm-grown suppliers.

ritannia Lanes is a well-established company with Cornish roots, having nurtured a strong reputation across the south west as one of the UK’s premier storage and removal firms. We’re interested to catch up with company Director Mark Lane, to get his take on the current Stamp Duty holiday, the effect it’s having on the Cornish market, and what potential buyers can do to capitalise on it. With the tamp uty holiday due to end on 31st March next year, the Cornish market is especially buoyant right now, with more people than ever seizing the opportunity to sell their homes and make that long-awaited move to Cornwall. And this is a trend that, Mark believes, is set to continue, due to a number of reasons. ot only have two lockdowns left homeowners seeking more space at home and a healthier home lifestyle, Mark explains: “The rise of remote working is also giving many the opportunity to live their dream of moving to our region full time, rather than just for holidays.
34 | CORNWALL LIVING
CL103--PCV06--ED--Britannia Lanes of Cornwall--2.00.indd 2
But with such an increase in the volume of sales, the process of buying a home here is inevitably taking longer. This, Mark tells us, means that people wanting to take advantage of the Stamp Duty holiday may need to begin the process sooner than they think, in order for completion to happen before 1st March next year. To illustrate the point, he reveals that because estate agents aren’t currently allowing viewings until customers have sold their existing properties, by the time they then start to look for a new home and get an offer agreed, the time between selling their home and purchasing the next can be between six to eight weeks This, he says, means that customers not wanting to lose the sale are having to complete on the existing property, then move into storage until their new homes complete. Fortunately, ritannia Lanes is here to help. ot only can you benefit from contactless video surveys, advice to help plan and budget your move, and an e cient and professional
removals service on a day that suits your schedule, you can also make the most of Britannia Lanes’ state-of-the-art storage facilities, choosing from a range of services tailored to your individual requirements. This means that if you’re faced with an extended waiting time between selling your current house and purchasing the next – which is likely over the coming months – you can rest assured that your belongings will be safe and secure for as long as you require. In short, whatever you require when it comes to moving home, Britannia Lanes has you covered. And at a time when navigating the process of buying a new home has never been more stressful, take it from us, it’s reassuring to know that Mark and the team are there to help.

We all love a summer barbeque, but have you ever thought about cooking outdoors all year round? Zowie and Gareth do just that, and are so passionate about cooking in the open air that they have turned it into an exciting new outdoor living business. Named after their young son, Soal embodies the couple’s enthusiasm for cooking outdoors. owie explains how it all started My first job was preparing and cooking barbeques for a large number of guests every week. I loved the smell, taste and atmosphere. Barbequing became a personal passion of ours, and it's not uncommon for us to be out in all weathers cooking up something over hot embers. Even on Boxing Day we have had a 12 hour joint smoking on the barbeque…and yes, that meant putting this on in the early hours of the morning!” Barbeques can be as simple or as complex as you like, but as Zowie explains: “It's all about having fun, just enjoying the alfresco dining experience. We have seen how outdoor entertaining can differ in many different countries and this really excites us. Cooking outdoors fills your senses –
the smell and the taste of open cooking combined with a glass or two of wine is what life is all about. As a family we have learned the art of outdoor cooking together and have enjoyed teaching our young son a set of al fresco culinary life skills that will be with him forever!” Soal offers a range of top quality products that range from full, design-led outdoor kitchen installations from Fire Magic to sleek Alfa pizza ovens and incredibly beautiful and authentic adai firebowls. ot having access to heat when you want it can be incredibly frustrating and uncomfortable, especially now. Unfortunately, many of us here in the south west find ourselves limited to night storage, flat panel or other old-fashioned electric heating systems, often on expensive off-peak tariffs. ut are we There is now another option that gives you far more control over your heating, and your bills. Reverend and Mrs Richards tell us about how, after years of being too warm in the mornings and chilly in the evenings, they chose South West Heating Solutions after reading about the team’s modern German L Atherm radiators. I remember thinking it would be lovely to be able to turn on the heating and have immediate heat, instead of our night storage,” says Mrs Richards. nlike night storage, L Atherm radiators can warm on demand. In fact, the intelligent built-in thermostat ensures they only turn on when the room drops below your desired temperature. This means that the Richards are now only paying for heat when and where they want it. “I was quite excited about that,” continues Mrs Richards. “To turn the heating on and have heat in 15 minutes was great! Our home is more comfortable. In fact, if I could have my time over again, I would have had them fitted earlier.
Perhaps the best part is that you can turn these radiators on remotely from your tablet or phone, so you’ll always arrive to a warm and cosy home. They’re available in a range of different sizes too, in over 190 colours, meaning you’re sure to find the perfect solution for your home. Duke Stone of Cornwall brings a wealth of experience to your home improvement project, bringing the timeless style of stone to any kind of home.
aving spent so much time this year unable to leave our houses, here in the UK, home improvement has never been closer to the front of our minds. Whether you spent lockdown inside or out, chances are that at some point, you began to notice aspects of your living space that could really do with improving. It could be an old, tired kitchen, outdated tiles in the bathroom, or perhaps the lack of a decent barbeque area. Alternatively, it could be that you own a holiday property in Cornwall and want to keep guests returning time and time again. Whatever’s on your list of improvements, and whatever the reason why, after a 2020 many of us would rather forget, why not give yourself a 2021 to look forward to by starting them now? Whether you’re looking to make changes inside or out in your garden, Duke Stone has extensive experience in the design and manufacture of both natural and engineered stone, meaning that with their help, you can easily incorporate into your property the timeless elegance and stunning style of such beautiful materials. Let’s start at the heart of the home – the

kitchen. Natural stone promises to enhance any scheme, from traditional to modern, creating a truly unique space that you and your family can enjoy for years to come. Durable and hard-wearing, a hand-crafted stone worktop will last a lifetime, which incidentally also makes it a fantastic, lowmaintenance option for anybody hoping to give their holiday let a makeover. In fact, natural stone can be used to great effect throughout the home, its versatility only limited by your imagination. Marble and limestone, for instance, are great for use in the bathroom as wall panels, flooring, vanities and basins, creating a luxurious space in which you – or your holiday guests – can escape and recharge. You can also use granite and slate – both hard-wearing – to help breathe new life into your existing fireplace or wood burner. To put it simply, anywhere that needs a beautiful, hard-wearing surface, can be turned into a real character feature using the right natural materials. Heading outside and into the garden, sandstone and slate are both beautiful
materials that can be used for paving and cladding. Reclaimed stone can be used to add ornamental charm to your garden space – perhaps an original sign for your house – or why not work with Duke Stone to build a bespoke outdoor barbeque? Whichever space it is that you’re hoping to renovate, be it your kitchen, bathroom, garden, or indeed your entire home, it makes sense to use materials that are both timeless and hardy enough to last a lifetime. By choosing the right materials – and working with the experts at Duke Stone to design and manufacture solutions precisely tailored to your home and lifestyle – not only could you potentially add value to your home, your space will also become one that’s cherished by you, or your holiday guests, for many years to come.

Updating your windows? Installing a new conservatory? Enlist the help of the experts at Windmill Windows.
stablished in 1996 by David, Gail, John and Jonathan Cockayne, over the last 24 years Windmill Windows has established a proven reputation for quality and value. It’s the team’s expertise, however, that truly sets this company apart, something we quickly learn upon catching up with David. We ask him about the benefits of installing new windows or a conservatory, garden room or orangery. “Installing a quality conservatory,” he tells us, “is one of the best home improvements you can make.” Indeed, not only will it transform your living space into an open, seamless environment, David continues, “it also adds value to your home,” making it much easier to sell when the time comes. Open 8.30am until 4.30pm from Monday to Friday, if you’re unsure about the style of conservatory, or even whether one would be a good fit for you and your home, why not pay Windmill Windows a visit? Not only will you be able to see what’s available, including the various materials and finishes, you’ll also benefit from expert advice from a friendly team of professionals, allowing you to make an educated decision.

At this time of year, another improvement that can make a massive difference to your home, both in terms of heat e ciency and overall look, is to replace your windows. “Feeling a draught is probably the most obvious warning sign,” explains David, “as well as windows rattling when the wind picks up. If you have wooden frames, when they begin to show signs of ageing, it’s probably time to renew them and perhaps opt for a more durable material like uPVC.” As with conservatory options, you’ll find a wide range of windows at the Windmill Windows showroom too, including an extensive choice of materials and styles, each providing a different look for your home. You really will be surprised by the difference replacing your windows makes, as one happy client says: “Our kitchen seems bright now and the view brilliantly clear. The fitters were marvellous and the kitchen and outside yard were left in spotless condition.” Whether you want to invest in a new conservatory, replace your windows or even install a new door, when you visit the
showroom in St Austell, the knowledgeable team will walk and talk you through the different options available, discussing which might work best for you and your home, providing you with a quote and advising on the different available materials. From start to finish, they will make the process as stress-free and seamless as possible, without pushing you into making any decisions and only ever advising to help meet your specific needs and budget. But don't just take our word for it; to understand the quality on offer in every aspect of the Windmill Windows service, you needn’t look any further than the team’s string of stellar online reviews! In short, if you want to install a conservatory, garden room or an orangery, replace your windows, or invest in a new door, a visit to the Windmill Windows showroom comes highly recommended.

ESCAPE TO THE
ith so many city dwellers no longer based at their workplace full-time there is now a real sense of freedom to relocate. As companies reorganise towards a permanent shift to homeworking, rural estate agents have reported a surge in interest from people looking to move to the country. And Cornwall is no exception. People’s priorities are changing, with many wanting more outdoor space and a rural environment. With this in mind, we spoke to Adam esmonde, from Cliff and cean, to find out the considerations needed for making such a move. e suggests first you should take a look at your priorities. Are you looking for coastal or countryside? The vibrancy of a town or the rural tranquillity of a sleepy village? If you have a young family then schooling will be high on your list. And if you’re not retiring, then there’s where and how will you work? Adam continues: “Fortunately, the way we work has changed. Post-Covid the opportunity to work from home has been opened up to all. You can live and thrive in Cornwall working remotely with your existing company, a company in the south west or even create your own company, as I did.” And with the improvement of rail, road and air links to major cities from Cornwall, commuting has also become a real option. Adam made his own move to Cornwall from London some 15 years ago. He suggests that the wise move is to look for relocation opportunities in up-and-coming areas rather than tourist hotspots, giving you more scope and better value for money. Adam and his team at Cliff and Ocean have decades
Thinking of leaving city life behind? Adam Desmonde, an expert in property and planning, shares his advice on relocating to Cornwall. of experience and knowledge regarding such areas in Cornwall. Combined with their excellent relationships with local land owners and estate agents, this means that they have access to some little gems that might otherwise be overlooked. Their work with Cornwall Council affords them the inside edge on new development zones, boundary changes and investment opportunities and as specialists in planning permission they can help you design a brand new property or transform an existing one. So, whether you are looking for a development, renovation or new build opportunity, a holiday home or a forever home, they can help take the stress out of finding your dream Cornish property. Adam is fully aware that trying to find a property when you don’t live in the area can be challenging and so offers a fully remote service. “After taking your brief we will find a selection of homes for you, arrange viewings (virtually if necessary) and supply information packs,” explains Adam. “We then create your own client portal where we can video conference and review documents. We also offer structural surveys and feasibility studies, meaning we can evaluate your chosen property while you sit back and relax.” So don’t delay, start your relocation planning today.

SIX STEPS TO
SERENITY Kitchen Kit reveal the six key steps towards realising your new dream kitchen.
MAIN What does your dream kitchen look like?
DISCOVER MORE To make your dream a reality, why not pop into the Kitchen Kit showroom on Threemilestone Industrial Estate and get your kitchen journey started?
ornwall’s Kitchen Kit has a wealth of experience in designing, supplying and installing kitchens to clients around the county. To help guide you through what can be quite a daunting process, Nigel and the team talk us through the six key steps, so that you know what to expect. Step 1: do your research This doesn’t just mean browsing the internet. The best way is to visit showrooms and feel the quality first-hand. pen the doors, compare designs and layouts, and most importantly, ask questions! It’s also key not to forget about appliances. Ask for demonstrations and different model types, which will help you understand how you really want to cook in your kitchen. Step 2: make an appointment “Here at Kitchen Kit,” says Nigel, “we believe it’s important to sit down with our customers. In this meeting, we encourage clients to bring a wish list, including colours, layouts and appliances. Although an experienced kitchen designer will never just recreate existing layouts, it is key to understand how the space will be used. With this understanding and basic design choices, we can get to work on a design before presenting it in the form of a 3D CAD drawing.” Step 3: review your design This is your opportunity to chop and change areas of the design until you’ve tailored your kitchen to your own personal needs and style. Ideas include handles versus handless; matt versus gloss; adding a pantry unit, or even incorporating LeMans trays in your corner units.
Step 4: order your kitchen Be aware that there will be differing lead times for each manufacturer. “We use two main German manufacturers, Nobilia and Bellerina,” explains Nigel. “Both produce rigid carcass kitchens produced in Germany, specifically for each kitchen customer. The lead time is normally six-to-eight weeks. During this time, Nigel stresses the importance of organising other trades, such as building works, flooring, electrics and plumbing. Step 5: installation This is where things really get exciting! It is normal for your supplier to offer installation, and Kitchen Kit always asks customers to make sure all cupboards are empty before installing your new kitchen. ur fitting team usually take three-to-five working days to complete the installation,” reveals Nigel, “however if the worktop is stone, this can add another week due to templating.” Step 6: relax and enjoy! And that’s it! It’s time to put the kettle on, sit back, and relax in your new dream kitchen, showing it off to your family and quickly becoming the envy of your friends.

ith Cornwall’s property market now arguably more buoyant than ever, those of us who are looking to sell our homes are searching for ways in which to achieve the best possible price for them. The same can be said for holiday home owners who wish to maximise their bookings for 2021. Even for those who simply want to make their personal living spaces as beautiful as possible, flooring matters In fact, the results of a survey ran by the National Wood Flooring Association showed how 80% of estate agents agreed that by installing wood floors, owners can significantly increase the value of their property. Here in Cornwall, maintaining such beautiful original features – be they hardwood floorboards or natural stone tiles – is as much about a property’s value as it is about maintaining its heritage, ensuring it can be enjoyed by owners for generations to come. This is where Cornwall Floor Care comes in. Led by Mike Dennick, Cornwall Floor Care is professionally qualified to make your floor amazing, having proven its worth time and
time again here in the Duchy where there is an abundance of character homes that still retain their original floors. Working with a number of different materials, from wood, marble, limestone and sandstone, to ceramic tiles, porcelain, granite, slate and more, Cornwall Floor Care is the leading name here in the Duchy for dust and solvent-free sanding and floor restoration. Fully insured, it is also the only company in Cornwall that can provide a two-year warranty on wooden floors, and when the job’s done, the team doesn’t just walk away. Instead, Mike will make sure you’re left with the appropriate products to maintain your floor, and should you require, can even set you up with a bespoke maintenance programme, keeping your floor in peak condition for years to come. This all sounds great, but don’t just take our word for it With regular videos uploaded to their YouTube channel and numerous images showcasing projects ‘before and after’, plus a reel of five-star reviews on their Yell page, you can quickly see for yourself why Mike and the team at Cornwall Floor Care come so highly recommended.

A Cornish business with family at its core, Holiday Home Waste Collection has come a long way since its inception in 2016.
oliday Home Waste Collection ABOVE Holiday Home specialises in the collection and Waste Collection appropriate disposal of waste and has grown its fleet recycling from both domestic and to serve both the commercial properties. It was founded after north and south coasts. Impressive! Cornwall Council announced that holiday INSET Jennifer Brown, founder and Director of this excellent Cornish business
home waste would henceforth be classed as ‘commercial’. This meant that owners would have to sign into 12-month contracts, with very little flexibility and often no collection days coinciding with changeovers. The company ethos is one that aims to make collections as easy and as flexible as possible. Testament to this is the new company website, which makes booking collections as easy as clicking a button. What’s more, the team serve both the north and south coast, and can arrange collections on different changeover days, which has really helped take the pressure off owners who want to ensure new guests arrive to a clean and tidy home-from-home. Even throughout the recent lockdown, the team were busy clearing waste and helping owners get set for the Christmas period. They did so in conjunction with sister company, Cornwall Wheelie Bin Cleaning, which Jennifer decided to launch after noticing a rise in need for such services. Now with their own specialist van, which is fitted with a machine to hoist and empty the bins, between them, these two stellar
Cornish companies not only ensure your waste is cleared as often as you need it to be, they also handle the cleaning of the bins themselves, leaving them smelling fresh and germ-free. As we look ahead to the winter, having hired more staff over the summer and with two bases in Wadebridge and Redruth, Holiday Home Waste Collection is in a great position to continue providing excellent service across the whole of Cornwall. But not just that; Jennifer and the team have recently invested in more vans, and we even hear that they are now planning to expand into north Devon! Approved or licensed by The Green Organisation, the Environment Agency, South West Water and others, and having already nurtured a sterling reputation among both domestic and commercial clients around the Duchy, it seems that Holiday Home Waste Collection is by no means resting on its laurels. In fact, it’s fair to say that 2021 is set to be another impressive year for this exemplary Cornish firm.

the outset In 2015, Bradley Olde was a super-fit and healthy 20 year-old, until a tragedy struck that would change his life forever.
ABOVE Outset Cornwall have helped Bradley and his family bring his business dream to life
hilst out running, Bradley collapsed from a cardiac arrest, suffering a severe brain injury as a result. His recovery took time, but Brad knew he wanted to do something to help himself and support others in the same position. Enlisting the help of his brother Alex and parents Sharon and Charlie, Brad decided to set up a glamping business on their beautiful family smallholding near Bude, providing accessible activity holidays for those recovering from brain injuries, plus respite breaks for carers and relaxing holidays for families and lovers of the outdoors. Plans were underway at the start of 2020, when Sharon saw a Facebook advert for Outset Cornwall and the family decided to get some business start-up support. Brad says: “Outset Cornwall really helped make this project a reality. I’d tried college and university before and didn’t get too far, but Outset was far more realistic and practical. It was easy for me to specify what I wanted to do for the business and pinpoint things I needed help with.” Now, Atlantic Horizons is a cosy, tranquil retreat with six glamping bell tents and eight camping spots. All facilities are completely accessible; from wider doorways and ramps in communal areas to accessible compost toilets and eco showers, the team have
worked with local disability groups to ensure every part of their business supports people recovering from trauma. Despite the Covid-19 crisis cutting their inaugural season short, the demand for UK holidays made their first year extremely busy, and the future looks exciting. New plans include an accessible shepherd’s hut offering year-round accommodation and introducing themed retreats to boost the confidence of people suffering from brain injuries or trauma. “If you have a dream or idea in mind, just go for it,” Brad advises. “The Outset tutors were great; you could ask any question and they knew how to help. Now, we can identify what worked well this season and what we should work on for next year.” Brad’s brother and business partner Alex says: “It’s been a long, hard journey for Brad but he’s always remained determined. He works incredibly hard and continues to inspire us. We’ve all learned that you really can do what you put your mind to with some positivity, determination and passion. I’m always grateful he’s with me to share this adventure!”

his year sure has been tricky to navigate for many of us and during these uncertain times, it is more important than ever to find some time to take care of our mental and physical well-being. That could mean going for a walk amongst nature, indulging in some much needed pampering or simply finding time to chat to a friend on the phone. The MEDfacials team understand that feeling great about yourself on the outside can have a huge impact on how you feel on the inside. Dr Stolte and his team have been working hard to continue to deliver the safest aesthetic skin and hair care treatments in Cornwall. Now fully CQC registered, they hope to re-open their clinic at the start of December with a range of exciting new treatments! A CQC registered doctor means that you can be sure to be in the safest of hands. A new treatment of note is ThermaVein, a quick, painless and permanent solution for skin complaints including facial thread veins, skin tags, facial redness and milia, which works by sealing the thread vein walls, causing them to disappear instantly. For brighter, fresher and plumper skin this winter, why not treat yourself to a Hydrafacial? This gentle resurfacing treatment cleanses, extracts impurities and hydrates the skin in six steps, leaving skin
rejuvenated, improving circulation, increasing elastin and collagen production. MEDfacials also now offers laser treatments for age spots and hyperpigmentation or sun damage, as well as hair and tattoo removal. They have also introduced the amazing SkinPen for micro-needling treatments, all of which can be seen on the MEDfacials website. Pivoting during these strange times, Dr Stolte understands that many customers may not feel comfortable with face-to-face consultations and now offers free of charge video consultations for Cornwall Living readers with the practice's external iS Clinical Skincare expert, Abigail. This can be done from the comfort of your home and is available by logging into www.consult. harpargrace.com and selecting MEDfacials as your clinic. What’s more, you can also buy your favourite skincare products online this Christmas with a newly re-vamped online shop! In short, on behalf of the team at MEDFacials Truro, please take care and stay safe this winter.

SAVING LIVES As a vital part of the emergency services in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, despite the lockdowns, Cornwall Air Ambulance has had to find a way to go on.
llness and injury haven’t gone into lockdown and despite the pandemic, the need for critical care by air has continued to rise. With a brand new helicopter, the crew of Cornwall Air Ambulance attended hundreds of patients in 0 0, saving countless lives and keeping families together. ne of those people was eith. Critical care paramedics Thomas and Lisa were tasked to reports of a quad bike incident not far from the charity’s base in ewquay. Arriving at the scene, they found -year-old farmer eith had been hit by a trailer and quad bike. e suffered lifethreatening chest injuries and was struggling to breathe. As they assessed his condition, Lisa noticed air bubbles under the skin on eith’s back – known as surgical emphysema, this indicates that air is leaking from lungs under the skin. Thomas said My first impression of eith was of someone who looked very ill, he was pale and had obvious injuries to his head and chest. I was a bit worried for him. atients that are in pain and have been involved in a traumatic incident are scared, so it’s quite a normal reaction to be emotive. It’s part of our role to reassure them that they are in safe hands. For eith it was about getting his pain under control and facilitating the rescue from the scene. The critical care team administered morphine and ketamine to help eith with the pain before he was transferred into the helicopter.
From there, it was a 0 minute flight to Derriford Hospital, where he spent a week recovering from multiple injuries. Following the incident, eith said It was my breathing I was most concerned about. I was relieved when they turned up. They were great, it makes the back of my eyes sting with the kindness. The Covid-1 pandemic brought about challenges both in the way the critical care crew operate, but also in how the charity raises the funds to keep the helicopter flying. preading the message of Cornwall Air Ambulance far and wide has been key to keeping those vital donations coming in, explains aula Martin, Cornwall Air Ambulance’s Chief xecutive. We partner with local businesses to help do that and it’s thanks to those such as ngine ouse Media, illtribe Media, Fernbank Advertising and irate FM (among many others), that we have been able to continue saving lives. Thank you to everybody who has supported Cornwall Air Ambulance this year.
