THE TALK OF THE TOWN

Introducing Rock’s cool new dining destination, The Upper Deck, where great food meets impressive views.

Rock’s new culinary kid on the block is an unpretentious Mediterraneanstyle bistro/brasserie nestled above the sand dunes and endless white beaches of the Camel Estuary. This is laid-back riviera dining at its best. The menu boasts simple yet tasty dishes created from locally sourced ingredients, celebrating the bounty of Cornwall's land and sea. From specials such as Crispy Chilli Beef or a sumptuous half Lobster paired with fries to all year round delights such as the Upper Deck Burgers or Steak Frites, along with a selection of small plates, the menu offers something for all palates.

Behind every dish lies a story of sourcing from the region's finest suppliers. Lobsters and mussels come from the waters surrounding the Camel Estuary, ensuring unrivalled freshness and flavour. Fresh fish comes courtesy of Cornish specialist Matthew Stevens, while meats are sourced from premier local butcher James Kittow, guaranteeing the highest quality. A seasonally inspired, weekly changing specials menu is a real highlight.

Upper Deck Head Chef, David Townsend brings with him great working relationships with local producers, meaning that his kitchen gets the cream of the crop. “We’re big on

fresh produce and are lucky that we can get awesome supplies delivered to our door daily –veg even twice a day,” he says. “You can see the Porthilly Mussel farm from our balcony, so it’s fitting that we serve Porthilly mussels daily….”

Beyond its culinary offering, the ambiance is a fusion of Mediterranean charm and coastal elegance, with light, airy interiors that invite guests to linger over their meals. The bar offers a selection of local beers and spirits, alongside classic cocktails and fine wines. Hospitality is at the heart of The Upper Deck, with its year-round team dedicated to ensuring every guest feels like family.

As summer approaches, The Upper Deck is gearing up for a season of fun, including live DJs and local musicians – think Café del Mar vibe – as well as showing some of this year’s biggest sporting events. Whether you choose to relax with a cocktail on the terrace or tuck into some simple fresh food, we highly recommend you visit very soon.

AT THE SPA

Discover a new level of luxury wellness at St Moritz Hotel.

Situated in an elevated position above Polzeath, St Moritz Hotel has always been known for its luxury offering. With a Miami-chic vibe, wellness and relaxation are catered for at every turn. This winter saw an extensive, multi-millionpound renovation of the hotel’s entire pool area under the expert eye of designer Steve Coombe of 3idog. The result is a wellness space that rivals the best in the South West. The thoughtful design incorporates intimate spaces where guests can relax with ergonomic heated loungers throughout.

Complementing the hotel’s Miami-inspired interiors, Italian rock signature flooring and marble white mosaic pool tiling abounds. Neutral walls create a feeling of calm, working effortlessly with pops of blush pink tiles. Four-postered day beds capture the vibrant and energetic essence of Miami, with bold patterns of turquoise, coral and sunny yellows.

The amazing open-air setting of the therapeutic, high-tech outdoor hydro pool invites guests to soak in warm waters; a unique sauna experience combines a classic high-heat sauna along with a new Nordic scented sauna; as well as a crystal steam

room to support deeper levels of meditation. Its steam cleanses and purifies the skin, relieving tension and boosting the immune system, while the crystal brings a deep energy to the experience. Completing the circle of hot and cold therapies are drench and experience showers, as well as a striking ice fountain. The Cowshed Spa signature therapies continue to complement this new luxury wellness offering. If you are looking for the ultimate Cornish stay, then the St Moritz doesn’t just tick the wellness box. The outdoor pool with seaside pool club is a great place to have some fun in the sun for the whole family – little ones will love a ‘whippy’ ice-cream from the 99’er beach hut. And, as the day draws to a close, guests can enjoy elegant dining in the hotel’s Shorecrest restaurant before laying heads on soft pillows in elegant bedrooms for a restful night’s sleep, ahead of another day’s adventure.

The Camel Estuary is one of Cornwall’s crown jewels. Abundantly beautiful, teeming with wildlife, alive with adventure – there’s no doubt about it, it’s a very special place. Arguably, there’s no better spot in which to enjoy a holiday this year, no matter what your requirements!

For families of all sizes seeking a beachside house or waterside apartment from which to enjoy the sandy coves of Cornwall, the options are endless. Choose from stylish boltholes in Rock, or spacious homes in Daymer Bay, ideal for multiple families or larger, multi-generational groups.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for a romantic getaway with just the two of you, a fully renovated fisherman’s cottage in Port Isaac or a peaceful Padstow retreat might just be for you. Looking to escape the crowds? A remote property nestled on the coast path, complete with a woodburner for cosy winter evenings, could just be what you need. Of course, many properties are also dog friendly, meaning pooches and their humans can make the most of Cornwall’s endless walks together.

Once you’ve chosen your ideal base, you can set about exploring! For more unique ways to appreciate the estuary, why not swap your walking boots for a bicycle, paddleboard or even a swimming costume? There are so many ways to enjoy the natural beauty of the Camel Estuary, and when it comes to a much-needed recharge, there are coffee shops, restaurants and bars aplenty! Sample some of the finest local fish, or why not devour a well-earned Cornish cream tea in the sunshine?

With offices in Rock and Port Isaac, they have a fantastic selection of dog-friendly properties, holiday cottages with hot tubs, and larger accommodation for gatherings with family and friends; there’s something for every occasion.

Imagine the perfect day out, where you glide along scenic coastal paths on an e-bike, catch some waves while filming your epic surf session with a GoPro, before winding down with a mouth-watering barbecue as the sun dips below the horizon. Let's dive into this idyllic adventure…

Start your day with a burst of energy by hopping on an Super73 Ebike. With its motorcycle-inspired design, this is a cross between an urban cruiser and off-road scrambler; its 4" wide tyres making easy work of lanes, paths and trails. You'll find pedalling is effortless and we can’t think of a better way to travel than with the cool ocean breeze on your face as you soak in the beauty of the rugged coastline. They can even be fitted with a surfboard rack for the ultimate versatility. Safety always comes first at MAD Water Sports, and, as they're stockists of Thousand bike helmets, you needn’t sacrifice safety for style.

After working up a sweat on the trails, it's time to hit the waves for some exhilarating fun in the surf. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro, MAD Water Sports is bound to have a surf or bodyboard perfect for you, and their range

As the day winds down and the sun begins its descent, it's time to indulge in a sunset grill on the beach. Thankfully, there’s no need to be lugging around a bulky barbecue; the Skotti grill is super lightweight and portable – folding flat into its carry bag – meaning you’ll be cooking up a feast on the soft sands of a secluded cove in no time. Sip on a glass of something cold while you watch the sunset cast a golden glow over the rugged coastline, and share stories of the day's adventures. Switch from gas to driftwood to turn the Skotti Grill into a fire pit for the ultimate evening experience in the glow of the fire.

TO FORK From farm

Discover a true taste of Cornwall at Boscastle Farm Shop, where provenance and quality are always at the fore.

Boscastle Farm Shop is loved for its locally sourced, fresh produce, a testament to its ethos of providing local people and visitors with high quality food, locally reared Red Ruby beef and great service. Farm shops often feature goods grown or raised on-site or nearby, which not only bolsters local agriculture but also limits food miles and assists eco-friendliness. In recognition of this, Boscastle Farm Shop and its café and tea garden have both been awarded Gold by Taste of the West in 2024 for the second year running. They constantly strive to keep excellence levels high, highlighted by these recent awards; pair that with magnificent panoramic views of the rugged north Cornish coastline and you can see the reason people keep returning.

The farm’s pedigree beef herd can be seen grazing the north Cornish coastal fields above Boscastle. Always upholding a high standard of animal health, the herd has a freedom of movement endorsed by the National Trust. This Red Ruby beef has become the staple in the farm shop’s award-winning traditional steak pasties and steak and ale pies, as well as providing everything from boxeater roasting joints and fillet steaks to the beef shin used in their homemade Cornish stew, which can be found on the daily specials board in the café.

You will also find a selection of delectable freshly baked sweet goods, individually crafted with the finest ingredients, avoiding unwanted additives or cheap oils wherever possible. When it comes to their Cornish cream teas, the scones are freshly baked every morning, and they definitely embrace the ‘jam first’ policy!

The deli counter is packed with homemade produce, available to eat in the café or for takeaway days at the beach. There is a delightful Cornish cheese selection; from Davidstow Cheddar, Miss Wenna Cornish Brie and Nanny Florrie Goats Brie to the Cornish Gouda Co, there is something to suit every taste. Home-baked honey and mustard-glazed gammon and topside of beef are cooked, cooled and freshly sliced every day for the famous BFS ploughman’s, a treat not be missed.

Boscastle Farm Shop offers visitors an authentic taste of Cornwall and a true farm-to-fork experience that celebrates the region's rich culinary heritage, and takes you through a journey of the county’s finest flavours.

Rock Gin’s extensive range of delicious spirits are the perfect way to celebrate in style this summer.

Life has really progressed for the team at Cornish Rock Gin, who have recently relocated to larger premises at Clear Space, Dunveth Business Park in Wadebridge. The move has meant that they can cater for the increased demand for their ever-growing range of artisan products, with plenty of parking outside. Here, you’ll find a retail shop with a full tasting station and many of the distillery’s original features including their very first still named Bonanza Boy, after founders George and Angie’s favourite race horse.

Angie says; “We are also delighted to have opened our new Fore Street retail outlet in the historic and legendary village of Tintagel, where our unique Camelot Collection of gins and rums also includes boxed gift sets which have proven to be extremely popular with tourists and regular customers alike. And, of course, another full tasting station included for all those free sips!”

The launch of their new Lansdown Road shop in Bude, coincided with a new addition to an ever-flourishing product range in the form of Live the Dream gin. This citrusy flavoured gin with added rosemary is best served over ice with a good tonic. Additionally, in response to customer feedback, the team have also added new products to their rum offering. The delicious and extremely popular Banana Blast has a taste profile full of sun-ripened bananas; if you prefer a sharper tang to your drink then the new Rhubarb and Ginger Twist will definitely get your tastebuds buzzing; or for the seasoned connoisseurs out there, the new 57% ABV full navy-strength rum, True Taste of Cornwall, will not fail to impress. If you find yourself in Bude then do seek out the lovely large store there where another superb free tasting station is available.

Cornish Rock Gin has also added to the range an excellent three-year-old Single Malt Whiskey; a delicious Peanut Whiskey Liqueur

– which has effortlessly converted many of their gin and rum customers; an exquisite Apple Brandy and, due to popular demand, a citrus gin-based liqueur named Lemongino. Made with no less than two and a half juicy lemons per bottle, this is just what you need to kick start summer.

“We are overjoyed with the opening of our fantastic new store in the popular Cornish town of Padstow on Lanandale Street, and this event was celebrated by a further launch of two new products, Sublime Lime with a hint of mint which makes an amazing gin-based mojito, and finally the Almond Air gin, a delicate creation which is so smooth it can be consumed on its own. Our fabulous Padstow store includes a large full tasting station, and plenty of new merchandise. Or why not just come and try one of our new products?” concludes Angie.

SPREADING

Celebrating its sixth anniversary, Padstow Gallery continues to spread the joy of art ownership.

Liz Francis, founder of Padstow Gallery, takes immense pride in sourcing original artwork from her treasured selection of British artists.

As a truly independent art gallery, Liz curates pieces which are handmade, each piece entirely unique and inspired by the enchanting Cornish setting.

Fundamentally, Padstow Gallery is about connections: between artists, makers, people and the inspirational environment around them, and the concept of ‘edges’ and ‘boundaries’ – a celebration of the flora and fauna of the countryside, and the ruggedness of the Cornish coastline, where land meets the sky, can be seen throughout the gallery.

“I love it when an artist takes a view and makes it their own,” Liz explains. “As someone who is not an artist, I am captivated by the entire creative process. It excites me to catch a glimpse of that moment in time through the artist's eyes, just through marks on a canvas or board.”

While Liz’s talents lay with the vision and curation of the space, she is quick to credit

the joy

the gallery’s success to her wonderful team, her amazing customers and of course, to the incredibly talented artists who continue to support this little venture.

Padstow Gallery offers a wide range of services to make buying the very best of British contemporary art effortless, and would be delighted to share their expertise in curating art collections and spaces, whether for domestic interiors or commercial projects.

Nationwide delivery is available, alongside flexible payment plans, video consultation, advisory services and the option of bespoke commissioning. The commission process is free and starts with the gallery team, who are there to support clients in exploring their vision for a truly special piece of art.

TPoetry IN GLASS

Jo Downs reveals why Padstow and the Camel Estuary are such an inspiration.

he words of Sir John Betjeman’s poem, Seaside Golf resonate with fused-glass artist, Jo Downs, “Lark song and sea sounds in the air, and splendour, splendour everywhere.”

Padstow and the Camel Estuary have long been an inspiration to artists and writers and Jo Downs is no exception. “Padstow and its stunning estuary have always been inspirational to me,” says Jo. “For over 25 years now, the atmosphere of the harbour, the blue waters across to Rock and Daymer Bay are idyllic to me and are a constant influence on my work. I still feel the thrill

on days when I bring work from the studio down to my gallery, the first one I opened in Cornwall.

“People come here to appreciate the light, and the colour in the landscape, and the unique beauty of Cornwall, and that’s what my work is all about. We are surrounded by such a stunning landscape – that’s what drew me here – and people want to capture this beauty and bring it to their homes and celebrate it. I hope I can make that happen through my artwork,”

“My customers want to express their personality, and their passions, through their

design choices. A beautiful home should reflect the character, the cultural interests and the aspirations of the people who created it.

A visit to our Padstow Gallery often results in a commissioned work which are a reflection of the client, and it’s my job to create work which they feel strongly connected to. There is a huge commitment in terms of time and energy with private commissions, but each project is all the more rewarding for that. It’s a totally fulfilling experience for me to see a project through from my very first drawing to the final installation, and for my clients, nothing beats that moment when their exclusive artwork takes pride of place in their home,” adds Jo.

The Padstow Gallery also offers an abundance of coastal-inspired artworks, from the popular Shoaling Fish wall installations, which were initially created for an architect designed home in Padstow, through to striking fold form vases there is something to suit almost every taste. And for anyone nervous about installing one of the striking multi piece artworks, Jo’s hand-cut and crafted Shoaling Fish are also available as framed wall art. These delightful art frames feature a plethora of darting fish in beautiful colours and many different sizes.

Jo’s gallery also plays host to number of collections that are exclusive to Padstow.

“Right now, Padstow has several exclusive designs from our Artisan range that are designed and made entirely by members of my lovely glass fusing team. Artisan allows them to go wild with their creativity. Each work is individually designed, so you never know what will be on show. The Artisan project is a wonderful example of free creativity, and it’s thrilling to nurture new talent” says Jo. “Giving my artists their own voice adds a new layer of beautiful work to our offering. I think it’s so important to let our artists showcase their brilliance, and it’s

been fascinating to see them conjure up these new works.”

All of the stand-alone Artisan works are available as part of Jo’s large interiors collection, and include bowls, mirrors, vases, multi-piece wall installations and a particular emphasis on framed artworks. Many are experimental works that include new textures, shapes and colour combinations, inspired by anything and everything from rainbows, seashells, moonlight, clouds and sunrises to soft pastel hues and powerful abstract patterns. Padstow is home to striking circular wall panels that capture the atmosphere and beauty of Trevose Head and pretty art frames featuring the iconic fishing boats in the harbour perfect for anyone wanting to take home a memento of the Camel Estuary.

With almost all her and her team’s bespoke works, the one constant is Cornwall –its special colours, shapes and textures. Customers with homes in Cornwall or across the whole of the UK really appreciate the special qualities of this area. It’s unique beauty aptly expressed by Sir John Betjeman’s words: “And splendour, splendour everywhere.”

Spirit of the Wave by Hannah McArdie

Being by the coast, Hannah McArdie of Beau Nidol is inspired to make a lot of sea-themed pieces, employing many different techniques in making glass waves. “This one,” says Hannah, “is special to me as I believe waves symbolise so much to people; their connection to the moon; their constant movement which can be smooth and calm or fierce and fast; the differences so relatable to our own lives. For me, the flow of shapes used and the magical colours from the iridescent really show this.”

Building THE FUTURE

Promoting proven natural building materials, Post & Beam’s Natural Panels utilise low impact, ecologically sound woodfibre insulation.

The expert carpenters and design team at Post & Beam are the brilliant minds behind a growing number of Cornwall’s most beautiful oak-framed buildings. Together they are putting the natural aesthetic of timber on display, bringing beauty to each project in a way that not only speaks of sustainability, but of the skill and craftsmanship that went into building it from the ground up.

The expert skills required by the team at Post & Beam are essential, especially given the challenging and complex projects that make up their portfolio. These range from traditionally jointed structural carpentry and

contemporary timber-steel hybrid frames, to insulated panel systems and timber cladding, as well as incorporating applied glazing and subframe joinery.

Alongside their renowned oak frames, the team have been pioneering the use of innovative timber-based solutions for over 10 years. As an alternative to standard SIP panels, Natural Panel by Post & Beam harnesses low-impact, ecologically proven woodfibre insulation for a more sustainable building encapsulation system. With an aim to create inspiring spaces that are designed and built to last for generations to come, it goes without saying that the longevity of the buildings stem

36 | CAMEL ESTUARY
HOME

from the longevity of the resources they’re built from.

Architects, designers and construction professionals are becoming more aware of the benefits provided by natural building materials. Being early adopters, and having successfully incorporated woodfibre insulation products in both domestic houses and larger commercial spaces, Post & Beam has gained a wealth of knowledge in this evolving build system. Unlike the majority of chemical-based insulation panels, the Natural Panel system promotes a positive CO2 balance as well as reducing harmful components.

What’s more, Natural Panel is an adaptable panel system that is capable of achieving passivhaus standards. Wall and roof thicknesses can be adjusted to suit required U Values (as low as 0.11) and are project specific. In the knowledge that each home is unique, the design team will work alongside your architect to develop the most suitable system for your build. The standard panel system utilises internal VCL (vapour control layer) integrated racking board and is vapour-open externally, while wall and roof panels are fitted with a high performing breather membrane and/or interlocking rigid woodfibre board externally.

This incredible system can be installed independently or incorporated into schemes with one of Post & Beam’s structural timber or oak frames for a complete oak frame and building shell solution, and the carpentry team will cut and assemble all panels in a controlled dry workshop ready for assembly on site.

Integral to Post & Beam’s approach is the care and consideration for all that they do, the people they work with, both employees and clients, and also the environment in which they live. That is why for every oak tree they use, the team replant two more in a managed woodland scheme right here in the Duchy. This exciting project, partnered with Plant One Cornwall, is aiming to restore the Celtic oak forests that once thrived on our western shores, ensuring this landscape, our beloved Cornwall, is sustained for the next generation to enjoy.

DID YOU KNOW?

Timber is a fantastic building material as it stores C02 for the life of the building, and around 90% of the raw material used by Post & Beam is oak, sourced from the sustainably managed forests of northern France. What’s more, a typical Post & Beam client indirectly plants approximately 10 to 20 trees via Plant One Cornwall.

SUSTAINABILITY A study in

With low energy demands and designed upon Passivhaus principles, we discover an exemplary home on the north Cornish coast designed by architects ARCO2, specialists in sustainable architecture.

In 1996, the Passivhaus Institute in Germany developed a set of building principles that would prove to be the gold standard in energy efficiency, translated to mean, quite literally, passive house. Created to rigorous energy efficient design standards so that they maintain an almost constant temperature, Passivhaus buildings are so well constructed, insulated and ventilated that they retain heat from the sun and the activities of their occupants, requiring very little additional heating or cooling.

At ARCO2 their ‘raison d’être’ is couched in the idea of sustainability and the methods advocated by the Passivhaus standard. A recent new build in Mawgan Porth is a dual but interconnected development that exemplifies this sustainable approach. The project represented a clear opportunity for ARCO2’s client to obtain a low-energy luxury

property that incorporates an abundance of character and architectural merit.

“As with many of our builds that are close to the sea,” explains Director of ARCO2, Ian Armstrong, “a high level of insulation is necessary, so priority was given to wall thickness with recycled newspaper blown into the wall structure to a width of nearly 400mm.” By reducing the amount of temperature change the level of interstitial condensation risk was lowered. This has measurable positive benefits for the longevity of the property, as material degradation is lessened due to moisture generation and retention being reduced to a minimum.

Surrounded by the wild and wonderful Cornish weather, the exterior had to be carefully considered. The detailing, implemented by Nathan Davis, was meticulously considered to make the floor-to-ceiling windows wind and

water tight. This is imperative to the coastal location where winds can reach 90mph. “The materials that are selected for our sustainable architecture designs to become tangible have a hierarchy of credentials that dictate our choices,” Ian continues. “We would always seek out those that are sourced locally first. The stone and cut timbers in the case of Keynvor were acquired locally, with more specialist materials imported from as near to the site as possible.”

Keynvor has an air-source heat pump to provide the primary space and water heating requirements. What is particularly innovative is the capital investment into a single heating system for both properties. A carefully planned super-insulated heat loop pipework system had to be installed deep into the ground to reduce the heat losses to a minimum. Mechanical heat recovery and ventilation (MVHR) solutions are essential in maintaining a healthy living environment. They are a ‘must have’ to each and every ARCO2 sustainable architecture design.

The result is a light and airy first floor with open-plan living, and benefitting from a continuity of materials with timber panelling and micro-cement floor tiling throughout. The ground floor is linear in arrangement with segmented private bedroom spaces. The interior design of the home was created by Nicola O’Mara, and serves to mirror the beauty of the location and the unique architecture of Keynvor.

The client was delighted and overwhelmed by the quality and comfort that was gifted in Keynvor, coupled with the ability to provide a combination of holiday rentals to cater for the thriving market in Mawgan Porth. The separation of the two properties is sufficient for each building to be used independently, or if a larger group books up then the

external spaces can be used as a communal area. The client was also delighted that he could let one of the properties and still enjoy a family holiday in Mawgan Porth at the same time.

The creation of Keynvor is a future-proof asset that has low energy demands designed upon Passivehaus principles, but which can also cater for a family’s needs. It will provide a passive income coupled with the ability to support multigenerational living, all wrapped up in a sustainable, well-considered design.

STANDING together

With an auction coming up on 8th June, Rock Raises for Cancer are determined to put up a fight.

In response to the cancer diagnoses of two close friends, Tracey Coombs, a local entrepreneur, and Shelagh Prudhoe, were motivated to establish a tangible way for the community to demonstrate solidarity with those facing cancer. Thus, Rock Raises for Cancer was conceived.

While initially started in 2019, the onset of the global pandemic delayed the original fundraising initiative. Presently, the community is more determined than ever to raise funds for three cancer-focused charities: Breast Cancer Awareness, Leukaemia UK, and the Children’s Hospice South-West. Residents, vacationers, and second homeowners alike are encouraged to participate in a summer online auction, leading up to a Gala Fundraising event at The Point, Polzeath, on June 8th. Supported by three local sponsors — John Bray Estates, Lucy Orr Interiors, and Quay 4 — and the generous contributions of individuals and other local businesses, the auction boasts an impressive array of items. Highlights include a flight experience in Cornwall, original artwork by

Jethro Jackson and other local artists, a stay in an Indonesian villa with staff for 12, a Prawn on the Lawn voucher, signed books, Jo Downs glassware, and more. All are welcome to bid via QR code or by visiting app.galabid.com/ rockr4c/items.

Furthermore, Rock Raises for Cancer merchandise, such as T-Shirts and locally commissioned tea towels featuring historic Rock, can be purchased at Quay 4, starting at £10. The committee envisions these fundraising endeavours as the beginning of an annual series of events benefitting various cancer charities nominated by the community.

This year’s fundraising initiatives offer a chance for everyone to contribute to national research and treatment programs, while also providing crucial support to the local Children’s Hospice, which assists young individuals with life-limiting conditions.
