Action packed escapes at the Polurrian Situated atop the cliffs on Cornwall’s south coast, Polurrian on the Lizard immediately promotes a sense of uplifting wellbeing. Gaze out to sea and enjoy the fresh air from the moment you arrive. Then, why not book in to the weekly yoga class which, weather permitting, takes place on the clifftops, or maybe plan a pampering treatment in the Health Club? The hotel is also introducing a wild swimming activity, run by fully qualified RNLI Lifeguard, Lucy Green, who will be running three-mile wild swimming excursions along the stunning coastline of the Lizard. The sessions also include a swim out to an island where participants will build and light a fire to cook their own lunch – then relax in beautiful surroundings before swimming back to shore. If you’re after something a little more adventurous then take to the coast with Dan Joel and his surf school, or get stuck in to kayaking, coasteering, paddle boarding and more with Lizard Adventure.

As well as all these brilliant activities, the social calendar at Polurrian provides a wealth of events and activities to enjoy for both guests and day visitors to the hotel. You can join a marine biologist from the Rock Pool Project and discover the secrets of local rock pools, or maybe learning beach and forestry survival skills is more for you and the family. For those who enjoy live music, the Polurrian is showcasing local artists as part of their ‘ 9 weeks of summer, 9 weeks of music’ woodfired sessions. These free events taking place every Sunday afternoon in August and September, offer guests and non-residents the chance to sit back and relax, while enjoying a tipple from the bar and the panoramic sea views. So, to ensure you don’t miss out on creating a truly memorable summer break, keep an eye on the Polurrian’s website and social media updates! urrounded as we are, on almost all sides, by the sea it’s not surprising that sailing is an inherent part of life in Cornwall – especially on the south coast with the port of Falmouth at its epicentre. Sailing, and in fact boats in all their forms, have always played a big part in my own life. Many a happy childhood day was spent with friends messing about in our little rowing boats off the beach at Cadgwith or joining my dad on one his many fishing trips, bringing home a haul of pollack for our tea. If we were really lucky, we would be able to grab a ride out on one of the bigger crabbers, and watch the pots come in filled with juicy crabs and lobsters. Those formative days on the water gave us a taste for adventure and independence, but also a healthy respect for the sea. When we progressed from rowing boats to sail boats, there was no such thing as ‘proper’ sailing tuition. In those days, we adopted a very ‘Heath Robinson’ approach to our first taste of sail, pretty much teaching ourselves by trial, error and a lot of capsizing! As my own children reach the same age, they are now afforded the most fantastic opportunity to learn to sail, being taught the essential techniques by experienced instructors…and all for no cost.

n Helford River Children's Sailing Trust

n Helford River Children's Sailing Trust

The Helford River Children’s Sailing Trust (hrcst.org.uk), an RYA training centre and a member of RYA OnBoard, was set up in 2005. With an experienced team of adult volunteers, Senior Instructor, Martin Fenton and his team provided lessons for more than 850 local children last year aged between 8 and 14. These children came from local primary schools, special schools, children excluded from education and, for the first time, a group of home educated children. The trust’s ethos is that there should be no financial barrier to any of their activities and by giving children and young adults in Cornwall access to sailing and other water activities, they can develop confidence, competence and resilience. We head to the Helford every Wednesday evening where Martin is a familiar, smiling face at each of the sailing sessions: “Our aim is to grow not only the sailor but the person. We tailor our sessions to the individual

It’s not always plain sailing though as Mike Comyn, Chief Instructor, explains: “The environment we work in can be challenging in itself. We go out in all types of weather and sea states, varying the lesson to the conditions and finding a sheltered cove to operate from. By listening to instruction, within the safety net we create, a child is able to overcome basic fears. By doing so, he or she is given a belief in instruction. This belief and trust can then be transferred to the classroom, home and future work environment.” “The Helford River is for all. If you are from a poor background in Cornwall you are very unlikely ever to experience the beauty of this wonderful place. We who work the estuary everyday, have no doubt about its impact on our lives and we love to share. We meet children who live less than 10 miles from the coast and yet have never been to the beach! They have no concept of its beauty or how to interact with the sea safely. Our job is to remove these barriers.” To help remove these barriers further the trust was delighted to announce earlier this year that it had been awarded a grant in excess of £1.6m that meant they could start work on an inland water sports centre at

Trevassack Lake. This disused quarry will enable year-round watersports for all as well incorporating adapted holiday lodge accommodation for children with severe disabilities. There will even be a floating classroom allowing young people of all abilities to get out on the water and view marine life through underwater cameras and onboard screens. You don’t have to be resident in Cornwall to take advantage of this amazing opportunity as the trust also offers holiday sailing courses for visiting children. It is grass-roots opportunities such as this that are helping to grow our budding sailors here in Cornwall. From here, children have gone on to captain super yachts in the Med, race in some of the world’s most prestigious yachting events or become sailing instructors themselves. It’s clear that discovering a love of the water at an early age in Cornwall opens many doors, and for some young people it has been the driving force to study marine related subjects at Falmouth Marine School (falmouthmarineschool.ac.uk).

With a school on the site dating back as far as 1825, tutors now combine industry experience with academic expertise to offer courses that include boatbuilding, marine engineering and science and alumni regularly secure prestigious jobs within the industry, both across the UK and beyond. Falmouth local, Ben Davies, secured the position of Wing Manager for Ben Ainslie’s America Cup team, thanks to his expertise in boat technology gained at Falmouth Marine School, while Tom Jackman, who is now working as a Chief Engineer on super yachts, is enjoying the career he always dreamed of while travelling the world. The marine science course has helped students progress to some of the most prestigious marine-based academic institutions, but also includes a range of non-academic practical skills that are often considered to be essential for progression. These range from diving, snorkeling and powerboat handling through to aquatic husbandry, photography and marine mammal observation. Former student, Clare Marshall, completed an FdSC in Marine Science at Falmouth Marine School and is now a Plankton Analyst for the Marine Biological Association: “Falmouth is the perfect location to study marine biology. With the River Fal and several beaches a stone’s throw away, it makes for the perfect outdoor classroom.”

è RIGHT A luxurious way to experience the waters of the Helford

So, what does all this mean for getting out on the water in Cornwall? For me, it’s essential that the next generation of budding sailors, water sports enthusiasts and marine students are inspired at a young age so that they can continue Cornwall’s sailing heritage and keep Falmouth and its world-renowned sailing waters firmly pinned on the chart. Without this infrastructure we wouldn’t retain the top-class boat builders, marine companies, marinas and yacht clubs that we see today. If you’ve not had the opportunity to learn to sail at a young age then are many other ways you can become involved. The Cornish Maritime Trust (cornishmaritimetrust. org) is dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of Cornwall’s maritime heritage, operating three historic working boats – Barnabas, Soft Wing and Ellen – and training people in the associated skills of sailing, restoration and maintenance. Non-members are welcome to sail as a guest but the best way to experience these incredible boats and support the trust is to become a member. Whether you are an individual or an organisation, you can immerse yourself in days gone by in these historic 19th century sailing vessels. For a modern introduction to sail, or if you’re a novice seeking tuition, then Cornish Cruising (cornishcruising.com), based at

n Cruise the Helford in style

Falmouth’s Yacht Marina, offers a complete charter, cruising and training centre, with RYA courses available in sail, powerboat and motorboat. You can spend even more time aboard by booking a yacht charter holiday that will see you discovering Falmouth’s world-class sailing waters as well as the unspoilt creeks of the Helford. However, if hoisting a mainsail fills you with fear and an easy life is calling, then Gweek Classic Boatyard’s (gweekquay.co.uk) 50ft Victorian launch, Constance, affords 19th century luxury on the water. You can cruise the Helford in style while sipping on a glass of bubbles or taking afternoon tea, watching the water, bird and marine life pass by. Cornwall affords everyone the ability to get out on the water and celebrating sail is something we do very well here – if you’re a Cornish sailor or a visiting yachtsman then Cornwall’s annual sailing regattas and events are sure to be already in your diary. Falmouth Week (falmouthweek.co.uk) has grown from

a race series into a full-on week of activities both on and off the water. The sailing side of the event includes a race programme, which ran this year from 10th to 17th August, that is packed full of exciting, top-level competitive racing, while shore side events include markets, music and much, much more. And it doesn’t stop there; once Falmouth Week has finished much of the fleet goes on to compete in the Fowey Regatta, setting sail out of Falmouth Harbour and heading up past the stunning waters off the Roseland. Whatever ‘floats your boat’ then I can highly recommend getting out on the water this season. Seeing Cornwall from the sea puts a whole new perspective on its already stunning scenery, and having the wind in your sails, and your hair, as you scud across the bay is a feeling like no other. I look forward to seeing you out on the water soon!

The feature room of the property, however, is the 36’ reception room, with its floor-to-ceiling wraparound glazing and four sets of patio doors, which look out over Falmouth harbour and out across the bay. The room is visually divided into two areas by a feature back-to back fireplace, with the main sitting room area taking up approximately two thirds of the floor area. The final third makes up the dining space, flowing through to the kitchen via double doors, which can be opened up to create a more sociable, open-plan layout.

In all there are three bedrooms, all of a generous size, with the master bedroom and main guest bedroom boasting en suites. Each enjoys a southerly facing, floor-to-ceiling door and window, thus benefitting from stunning water views, with access to the wraparound balcony. Falmouth itself is a bustling seaside town, renowned for its eclectic selection of trendy cafés, bars and restaurants that draw on the area’s rich foodie provenance. It’s also known for its boutique High Street, a fabulous alternative to the national and global brands found in Truro, and perfect for finding those one-off items, be it as a gift or a treat unto yourself. Simply put, 2 Admirals Quay represents an incredible opportunity to buy into one of the Duchy’s most popular and, indeed, beautiful seaside towns, one that’s unlike anything else on the Cornish market.

ager to find out more about what makes this fabulous part of the county so popular with those buying in Cornwall, we catch up with Martyn Rohrs and Matthew Rowe, founders of prestigious and award-winning luxury property agency, Rohrs & Rowe, who give us the Roseland low down. “There are very few places that you can compare to the Roseland peninsula. It’s not only one of the Duchy’s most unspoilt areas (it has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) but it has a real mix of scenery. From show-stopping beaches and breathtaking cliff top walks, to meandering rivers, quiet creeks and some of the lushest countryside to be found anywhere; there is something to appeal to everyone here,” Matthew tells us. Rohrs & Rowe have seen some impressive successes on the Roseland, at both ends of the property spectrum; they’ve had particular success selling properties that have previously been on the market for long periods of time with other agencies. Matthew explains: “With our understanding of the area and what it

has to offer, combined with our bespoke and unique marketing techniques, we can help to add saleability to a property and sometimes add value. We've recently sold Polsue Farm, a stunning property overlooking Caerhays, that had been for sale with other agents for many years. We quickly found the perfect buyers as our different approach was able to show off what was so special about the property and its amazing location. This is a great example of what the R&R approach can achieve!” So what is it about the Roseland that makes it so appealing? “For most of the people we have looking to buy in this area,” says Martyn, “it’s the perfect mix of peace and easy access to all the amenities you need.” Whilst it manages to retain an air reminiscent of days gone by, the Roseland is just a short drive from Truro, where you’ll find all the benefits of an excellent high street, including designer brands and supermarkets such as Waitrose. You can also hop on the daily ferry from St Mawes and stroll Falmouth’s cobbled streets, explore its independent boutique

è RIGHT Rohrs & Rowe specialise in marketing property in some of the Duchy's most coveted locations

shops and discover ample places to stop for refreshments. There is great access out of county too, with the fantastically easy sleeper train from Truro to London and easy access to the A30. It would seem that this part of Cornwall isn’t as remote as its demeanour may have you believe! From a lifestyle point of view, the Roseland has endless scope for activities. Whether it’s simply lacing up your boots and exploring the South West Coast Path, getting out on the water on a boat trip, hiring a kayak, or spending the day on one of the many stunning and safe family-friendly beaches, there’s plenty on offer here to fill your days. Discerning foodies will find a fabulous array of farm shops selling a wealth of local produce, including fresh seafood landed locally in the peninsula’s still-working fishing villages, which are also worth a visit. You’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to eating out, too. Head to the Michelin Starred Driftwood Hotel in Portscatho and you can enjoy wholesome menus that infuse seasonally inspired dishes with the finest ingredients. Or, if you’re out and about exploring the coast, pop into the Hidden Hut – tucked away along the coast path above Porthcurnick beach, you can pop in and enjoy lunch from the stove, oven or grill. Alternatively, why not try Portscatho’s latest pop-up, a joint venture between Knightor Vineyard and Craftworks Kitchen – it’s sure to be a huge hit with locals and visitors alike. If you’re an art enthusiast, you’ll no doubt already know that Cornwall is a hub of creative talent, drawing artists from around the world to capture its dramatic land and seascapes. The Roseland is a perfect example, with galleries dotted around the peninsula showcasing some of the area’s finest local talent.

So whether you’re contemplating a scenic retirement by the sea, or hoping to raise your family to the beat of the ocean, this could well be the place for you. Perhaps you already live here and are looking for an agency with the right tools for the job and an understanding of this magical area, that can be sure to market your treasured home to its full potential? Bringing extensive knowledge of the Roseland to every purchase and sale, Martyn and Matthew currently have some wonderful properties for sale in the area and they’re always looking to add to their unique portfolio. One of the duo’s recent clients – the owners of The White House in St Ewe said of their dealing with Rohrs & Rowe: “From our first meeting we knew that Rohrs & Rowe were different. Our property had been for sale for a considerable period of time when we contacted them. After making the decision to market our property with them instead of our previous agent, they swiftly put in place their high-quality marketing and they then very quickly and efficiently sold our property in a difficult market to some excellent buyers. Every aspect of their contact was responsive and helpful – I just wish we’d made the decision to approach them much earlier!”

We quickly found the perfect buyers as our different approach was able to show off what was so special about the property and its amazing location.

BUILT TO LAST We catch up with ARCO2 Architecture and hear about their latest, sustainably built home, Reflection.

RCO2 Architecture’s by-line, ‘beautiful buildings that don’t cost the earth’, truly emphasises this company’s passion for projects that are both cost-effective and environmentally aware. Director Ian Armstrong tells us: “At ARCO2, we’re not just about designing you a dwelling, we create homes with benefits to enhance your lifestyle – literally building homes for future generations.” This approach is evident in the creation of Reflection, a one-of-a-kind property designed by ARCO2 and built by their in-house construction company, ADD Sustainable Construction Ltd. When creating and building this remarkable property, the ARCO2 team worked closely with their client to achieve their vision to the highest possible standard, whilst also taking into consideration the impact on the surrounding environment and neighbours. Ian continues: “As a RIBA Chartered Architects Practice we have a unique, innovative and environmental approach to design, which is evident in this award winning house.” The new dwelling is situated on a former derelict garden and a green space at the entrance to a local village. The site had an unusual planning designation as an Open Area of Local Significance (OALS). This restriction would put most people off pursuing an application, however the policy did not preclude

development. This would require the most respectful and sensitive design in order to retain the intrinsic value of the OALS, which Ian embraced. The extremely challenging client brief was to design a four-bedroom house with every room benefiting from sea views without affecting or impeding the visual character of the site. The concept was to sink the building into the landscape, take advantage of the topography and use the split levels to create rooms that overlook an open-plan living area. It’s fair to say that the finished result is staggering! “It’s one of the most sustainable dwellings in terms of building fabric and energy usage in the area,” Ian finishes, “and demonstrates that a strong design concept can be really striking.” So, if you want to create a beautiful home with minimal impact on the environment, then get in touch with Ian and the team for your free consultation and make moves to secure yourself a home whilst also securing the planet for future generations.

experience DEFINING AN

é MAIN Each Charteroak site is chosen for its appealing locale ê BELOW

Do you think the Charteroak Experience could be for you?

We catch up with luxury lodge developers, Charteroak, and ask them to define the ‘Charteroak Experience’.

s a developer of high-quality holiday lodge developments, Charteroak recognise that they provide an exclusive proposition in the marketplace very different to those sites offering lots of shared amenities like swimming pools and tennis courts. Instead the focus for Charteroak has always been to create their own unique experience with an emphasis on three principal elements, which they believe are important to their customers. First of all the sites themselves are chosen for their appealing location, in areas where people would like to have a second home, but more importantly for the actual physical environment of the site itself, whether that embraces wonderful views, proximity to water or complete seclusion. Allied to this is the way the schemes are developed with an emphasis on well-conceived native planting and the introduction of streams and bodies of water to provide the best micro location and aspect for each lodge.

Charteroak are also a developer for whom quality prevails over quantity, priding themselves on creating developments with a much lower site density than many other locations. This means a Charteroak lodge provides greater privacy and outside space for you and your guests to enjoy. The final but all-important third point is the focus placed on the lodges themselves. By nature Charteroak have always been keen to push the boundaries of lodge development, seeking to positively innovate and enhance the product they offer. Lodges have been around for some time now but by looking to innovate, Charteroak want to create more forward thinking lodge designs, anticipating and then providing what the customers of today expect, plus one or two added features they might not! This is best illustrated by the indulgent luxury of the iSpa™ with its integral spa facilities and private cinema room, or the Sky Terrace, with its elevated deck making so much more of the panoramic views of the Cornish countryside.

Charteroak’s Sales Director, Sam Weller, tells us: “We work with great partners, be they contactors, landscape consultants, architects or lodge manufacturers; they are all vital ingredients in helping to deliver the Charteroak Experience. We are extremely grateful for their continued support and the important contribution they make to what we deliver.” The result of all of the above is a holiday home that provides a significant sense of space, an environment your lodge feels a part of and a home designed for you and with amenities just for you. That is the Charteroak Experience.

You could earn an attractive income and enjoy own use under Charteroak’s guaranteed income scheme, which is available on new holiday home sales.

Don’t just holiday experience a lifestyle

The whole idea of Rock Gin was dreamed up while walking our dog, Blue, on Rock Beach, which we still do most days when not working in the distillery.

St Ives - Cornwall

We named our still Bonanza Boy after our favourite racehorse and now it has produced a stable of four fabulous gins.

We made our original Rock Gin, which is a smooth dry clear gin with a great lingering taste. Then we progressed to our Pink Rock Gin which again is a very dry gin enhanced by red champagne grapes grown for us by our friends at the Pierre Gobillard champagne house in Hautvilliers. Next came our Cornish Gold Rock Gin this is a real gin drinkers tipple being very dry and peppery but still very smooth and has the addition of cubeb peppers. Then finally came our Rock Blue Angel Gin which again is a wonderful smooth very dry gin with Blue Gardenia flower and grains of paradise which seem to bring out all the other botanicals in the gin.

to Cornwall Living’s grown-up getaway

elcome to our special Cornwall Living supplement, dedicated to one of the south west’s best boutique hotels and spa for grown-ups only, Merchants Manor – set atop the hills of Falmouth overlooking the secluded bays and creeks of the Cornish riviera. The hotel has carved out quite the name for itself since being acquired by couple Nick and Sioned back in 2012. Returning this country house by the sea to its roots, the hotel places a focus on adult-only escapes, with an emphasis on warm service, outstanding food and drink, creating a guilt-free, recharging getaway thanks to its eco credentials. The decision to create a hotel for grown-ups, removing the function room (yes, no parties disturbing your experience) and creating a hub for food, drink and service was a bold move, but one that sees many flocking back each year. Meeting with Sioned, the driving force behind the guest experience is fascinating. She explains the decision to do things differently. The standard reception desk, which can be seen as creating a barrier, has been replaced by a partnership with Moët & Chandon to open Cornwall’s first champagne arrivals lounge. “At the heart of our hotel is service,” says Sioned. “People can be shocked when they first walk in and ask, ‘where is the reception desk?’ However, with a glass of Moët & Chandon, our team soon break the ice and help people start to relax after their journey. Our team are the beating heart of the business and we go to extreme lengths to recruit passionate people who genuinely care for our guests. The goal is to feel at home in the surroundings and with the team.” The same level of care goes into Rastella (old Cornish for ‘grill’), which is the hot ticket on the south coast food scene right now. One of only four

restaurants in the county to be awarded a coveted three AA Rosettes, you can find out more from Chef Patron, Hylton Espey on page 42. Will O’Shea, the Hotel Manger explains that it does not stop with food. “We have the largest wine selection in the area, and within the rare breeds category we have some of the only bottles in Europe and when they are gone we start the hunt for the next small-batch artisan producer.” The train of thought and caring continues through into the eco credentials of the hotel, with nearly all the menu sourced locally, its own Cornish black bee colony, a drinks list with over 70 eco wines and spirits, the first next generation high-speed electric vehicle charge point in the county and even producing their own hot water and electric. Looking to the future, Merchants Manor is keen to continue its mission to intrinsically link physical wellbeing, via the Linen Rooms Spa, with the wellbeing of the environment. It’s the first hotel in the UK to join the global project to create a sustainable future called ‘It Must be Now’. Nick says: “We look at every opportunity and new development and ensure there is a way to reduce our footprint. A great example is the new infrared sauna we recently installed. We have ensured the construction is in eco-certified wood, and it has reduced energy consumption by 80% over the previous, and we have even upcycled the old one. “Making a positive difference, providing memorable moments for our guests, with amazing food, drink and service against the back drop of a guilt-free pleasure is what we are all about and not many can truly say that.” Read on to discover everything that makes Merchants Manor one of Cornwall’s finest.

Merchants Manor Chef Patron, Hytlon Espey, explains the importance of foodie provenance, plus what makes Rastella the hottest culinary ticket in town!

C é MAIN Exceptional presentation with the flavour to match è RIGHT

Dinner at Rastella is a journey around the Duchy

ornish food and drink is some of the best in the country. “We’d be crazy not to take advantage of that,” explains Merchants Manor Proprietor, Nick Rudlin, “which is why we produce nature inspired food that ticks all the boxes.” Rastella is the highest rated dining experience in Falmouth. From locally-foraged greens, butchers and garden markets, to the love Chef Patron Hytlon Espey puts into every dish, there is one mantra in the Rastella kitchen: “What grows to together, goes together.” This makes every breakfast, lunch and dinner here a journey around Cornwall. Now, don’t get me wrong, Cornwall has some exceptional restaurants but the very nature of our seaside location means that while food is first class the ambience is often laid back. While heading to dinner straight from the beach in shorts and flip flops obviously has its appeal, sometimes something a little more chic is the order of the day. We’d heard many good things about Rastella, the restaurant at Merchants Manor in Falmouth, not least of which is its recently awarded and highly coveted third AA Rosette – one of only four restaurants in Cornwall to boast this accolade. Chef Patron, Hylton Espey,

CLUP--B&B--15--ED--Merchants Manor Supp--Fine Dining in Falmouth--2.00 v2.indd 2

was born and raised in South Africa. It was Merchants Manor’s devotion to using the finest, fresh local ingredients, an ethos that matches Hylton’s own, along with a love of the sea that drew him to Falmouth and Rastella. It has proved to be a match made in heaven. On arrival you can’t fail to be bowled over by the grandeur of the building – the ivy-clad doorway heralds an opulent interior where sparkling chandeliers light up the traditional entrance hall. The bar and dining room rival the very finest of London restaurants when it comes to style and ambience. The tables are adorned with crisp linen and the cutlery shimmers in the evening light as we are shown to our table. Chef Hylton joins us to introduce our first course – Game Bird – pheasant, reared on the nearby Roseland, served with puffed heritage grains and a plum caramel. The richness of the fowl is cut through beautifully with the sweet, but slightly acidic plum caramel. It’s paired perfectly with a glass of Trevibban Mill Harlyn, an off-dry white that has flavours of watermelon and honey. We learn that Hylton takes daily foraging trips along the coast to pick fresh sea vegetables for his outstanding dishes and judging by the flavours of what’s on our plates, it would seem that what grows together really does go together! Nowhere is that more apparent than in tonight’s main dish of the intriguingly named Trewithick Pastures. Hylton is on hand to explain that the lamb he’s about to serve comes from a farm nearby, where the lambs graze on fields overlooking the sea above Porthleven. This lamb combines perfectly with fresh, local crab and a foraged vegetable selection of rock samphire and sea aster. Even part of the lamb in the dish is roasted with hay from the very farm from whence it came. Everything is cooked to perfection and is served with Hylton’s signature B.O.F.G.A – a burnt onion fermented garlic aioli.

Rastella is the highest rated dining experience in Falmouth ç LEFT

What grows together goes together!

We are treated to a Black Ram Red, again from Trevibban Mill, to drink with our lamb. Hints of aromatic herbs, leather and vanilla, along with spicy top notes of clove and liquorice, are a fitting accompaniment. It’s no doubt that Hylton’s attention to detail and superb skill in all areas are what won him the three AA Rosettes and he proves that his talent goes beyond the savoury. Dessert is perfectly formed and perfectly named for the time of year – Autumn. Perhaps best described as a ‘deconstructed pumpkin pie’ we are treated to a swathe of sweet and gently spiced pumpkin along with a chai sorbet and crisp ginger fairing crumbs, topped off with a gently sparkling dessert wine courtesy of a Fontanafredda Asti. Light and delicious, this ends a meal that has been very special in many ways. Although part of the hotel, Rastella feels very much like a standalone restaurant, and has a chic and stylish identity of its own. The service throughout the meal was unobtrusive, yet impeccable and the wine choice a triumph. We resolved that this is a dining room we will return to for many a special occasion or celebratory dinner.

RAISE A GLASS Rastella’s carefully curated wine list includes one of the country’s largest selections of organic, vegan, vegetarian, biodynamic and natural wines. From ‘rare breeds’ with some of the most world-renowned vintages, to ‘easy drinkers’, there really is something for everyone.

HOLIDAY LUXURY The water is warm, the beaches are quieter and the weather is mild, making September and October great months to visit the Duchy.

ith ideal surf retreats and beach chalets on the north coast, and traditional cottages and farmhouses on the calmer south, Forever Cornwall has a retreat for you. If you’re a seasoned surfer then Newquay is the place to go. Fistral’s consistent waves will give you a real taste of professional surf conditions, with several international surf competitions taking place there throughout the year. It’s also great for novices with surf schools such as Cornish Wave Surf School helping learners capitalise on the waves. Whether you’ve spent the day riding waves or watching them, Forever Cornwall’s Newquay retreats are all within walking distance from Fistral and the rest of the beaches nearby. Perfect for couples is The Gem – a luxury cottage well set for exploring the Cornish coastline and watching the sun set from its private terrace. Or, for bigger families, why not book your stay at Ultramarine in Lusty Glaze and take advantage of the nearby beach bars and restaurants? For those seeking a more remote surf experience, Port Gaverne offers its visitors a brilliant base from which to explore the nearby, slightly more hidden beaches. Forever Cornwall has ten beautiful cottages and apartments in the small hamlet, sleeping from two to eight, each just moments from the sheltered cove. Take to the quiet coastal roads and find Trebarwith Strand

and Polzeath – both brilliant for surfing with easy access – or challenge yourself to find Tregardock at low tide for a stunning, often deserted sandy beach complete with waterfall. You could, of course, simply stay put and spend days exploring the Port Isaac and Port Gaverne coastline with Cornish Rock Tors! If gentle waves and less-extreme watersports are your thing, then head over to the south coast. The Helford river offers a sheltered playground for those looking for relaxed paddle boarding, explorative kayaking or simply a spot of rejuvenating wild swimming. Dotted with creekside beaches, take a picnic on a rowing boat, or set up camp in dappled sunlight underneath riverside trees before strolling back to your unique retreat. Forever Cornwall offers quality holiday homes all over Cornwall in locations that include St Ives, Mount’s Bay, Gwithian and Holywell Bay. From unbridled luxury to family friendly affordability, the team’s handpicked portfolio of unique retreats has something to suit everybody, so whatever aspects of Cornwall you’re hoping to experience, be sure to contact Forever Cornwall before booking your next out-of-season stay.

Which would you prefer: the surf of the north coast, or the calm waters of the south? Nothing beats exploring the waterways with Cornish Rock Tors!

Visit Cornwall - Adam Gibbard

Beautiful stays in Port Isaac, Coverack and Gwithian

The White House, Port Isaac Situated in the picturesque fishing village of Port Isaac, The White House is new to the letting market, allowing guests to experience everything that Cornwall has to offer from a truly unique and beautiful base. Many will recognise Port Isaac as the setting for acclaimed TV series Doc Martin and The White House is in fact right next door to Doc Martin’s house! Nestled on the cliffs of Roscarrock Hill, the property affords beautiful views thanks to its position overlooking Port Isaac harbour, the village and the ocean beyond. The Grade II listed cottage has also been renovated to exceptional standards and the interiors and design have been carefully thought out in order to provide the ultimate luxury and comfort during your holiday, with three tranquil bedrooms, each exuding coastal style and breathtaking ocean views. Outside, a stylish al fresco dining area wraps around the front of the property, or for an even more impressive view, climb up to the private terrace to capture that perfect seaside sunset. If that’s not reason enough to stay here, you can explore Port Isaac village and harbour from your doorstep and you can even bring the family pet along! Next door you’ll find a charming three-bedroom holiday cottage. When combined, these two properties can cater for up to 12 guests – making this the perfect base for all the family to get together.

| STAY Poldowrian, Coverack Sleeping up to ten with a well-equipped kitchen, washing machine, TV, WiFi, books, games, and a piano, Poldowrian Farmhouse is the perfect peaceful, self-catering escape for a group of friends or family. The property has been in the Hadley family since 1964, when owner John’s father left his job in advertising and took up dairy farming. As a teenager, John explains that it was sheer magic – discovering hidden paths and prehistoric walls, learning to drive tractors and milk cows, sweating as he brought in and stacked load after load of hay, then scrambling down the cliffs for a welcome swim and often a barbeque on the beach. The magic is still very much there at Poldowrian, and John and his family are pleased to share it with you. Situated just four miles from the Lizard villages of Coverack and St Keverne and with exceptional ocean views, you can stay in the beautifully renovated farmhouse and enjoy the gardens, the cliffs and the local beaches. You can grab a pasty from Elizabeth in Coverack, cross over the Helford river to Trebah Garden and drop in for a cream tea or a homemade ice cream at Roskilly’s.

poldfarmhouse@outlook.com www.poldfarmhouse.co.uk

Castaway Cottage, Gwithian This newly renovated retreat nestles on the edge of three miles of sand dunes and nature reserve that stretch from Godrevy and Gwithian all the way to Hayle. Sleeping eight, it offers the perfect escape for surfing and outdoor activities with large secluded gardens and generous laid-back indoor living space, which is also dog friendly. The property offers a unique alternative to Forever Cornwall’s Gwithian Towans chalets. Located at Upton Towans, it’s a little further south along the bay and perfect if you’re looking for more space. You’ll feel as if you have discovered your own special corner of Gwithian, with private access to the sand dunes and just a 20-minute stroll through the towans to the long beach at Upton Towans, which is lifeguarded May to September and is 100% dog friendly all year round. Offering something a little different to most in the area, Castaway Cottage is a stylish beach house, newly renovated to an exceptional standard with everything you need to make the most of your Cornish getaway, from the smart TV and en-suite master bedroom, to the rope swing and hidden path out onto the golden dunes and beyond to the beach. Whether you’re visiting with a group of friends and hoping to take advantage of Gwithian’s famous surf, a family group wanting plenty of space to relax and explore, or a couple desperate to tire out the dogs and switch off for a while, this retreat is something of a coastal haven.

Awarded ‘Five Star’ status by Visit England, Landal Gwel an Mor is not your average Cornish holiday resort!

ornwall’s warmer seasons, particularly in the last few years, have been exceptional, extending well into September and even October! At this time of year, things tend to quieten down at Landal Gwel an Mor as families head back home for the start of the school year. That makes it the perfect time to make the most of another Indian summer – whether you’re retired, planning a quiet romantic break or escaping to Cornwall with young children. The available holiday lodges come in three types: Residence Eco, Lakeside and Scandinavian. If a large sun deck, outdoor furniture for al fresco dining, sun loungers and a hot tub sound like your idea of holiday heaven, then we highly recommend the Residence Eco Lodges, which sleep six with prices starting from £499 for three nights. Alternatively, if you’re picturing your romantic break sleeping lakeside, with views across the millpond and with everything you need for a romantic, balmy-evening barbeque, then the Lakeside Lodges are definitely for you. Sleeping two, prices to stay lakeside start at just £105 per night! That just leaves the Scandinavian Lodges. Sleeping five to six and available in five different types, many have hot tubs, many have log burners; some even have both! All benefit from barbeque stands, complemented by outdoor furniture and staggering sea views, and each is situated in beautiful landscaped gardens,

so they’re a pleasure to spend time in. With rates starting at £359 for three nights, why not enjoy a getaway with friends, the Scandi way? A number of lodges are dog friendly, which means your waggy tailed friend needn’t be left behind, and some offer high-end assistance, offering superb disabled access. As if all this wasn’t tempting enough, the resort’s on site facilities are also excellent. Feadon Farm Wildlife Centre – great for adults and children – is home to a number of rescued animals, with experiences including falconry, hand-feeding rescued foxes and stroking the reindeer brothers. Alternatively, why not go on a night walk and watch badgers from the Hide? There’s also the Wellbeing Spa, a heated swimming pool with sea views and a gym, plus a golf course inspired by some of the world’s most famous nine holes, a coarse fishing lake, and an indoor play area that’s perfect for tiny ones with over 2,000 square feet of soft play, slides and climbing walls. In short, Landal Gwel an Mor has everything you need for the perfect, five-star escape. The best part is that if you quote 'CLC19' when you book, you could get up to £100 worth of free spending money, so be sure to get in touch!

the experts

George at Cornish Traditional Cottages explains how saving on expenses will further increase your holiday let profits.

O é ABOVE George and the team know how to maximise your holiday home’s potential

ne tip that George offers is to keep your property snug. “Good insulation can save hundreds of pounds a year on heating bills, so when you’re carrying out a refurbishment, be sure you maximise insulation throughout. This includes the room, cavity walls, even windows and doors – ensuring they don’t let anything in or out unless they’re open.” He also suggests paying extra for longer warranties on your appliances, which he explains can save money in the long run. Giving guidelines to streamline the changeover can be a good idea too: “Asking guests to tidy before they leave, put out the rubbish and place dirty towels in the bath – these can all help ease the work on changeover day. You should also be crystal clear on house rules, for instance, where guests can and can’t smoke; where pets are allowed. Be sure to state in your contract, too, that any heavy duty cleaning required after their stay will incur an extra fee.” So how else can you save money on running your holiday let? Keeping on top of maintenance, for one, is a sure-fire way of keeping costs down in the long run. As George puts it, “the longer you leave a problem, the more it costs to fix.” He explains that carrying out regular checks after each stay and making a thorough inspection at regular intervals will help. “A stitch in time saves nine,” as the old adage goes!

You should also shop around for utility providers, comparing tariffs and services for electricity and gas suppliers. “Most offer combined tariffs,” George says, “but don’t assume these are cheaper than having separate providers. The same applies to internet connections too: check out online deals, as some companies offer generous discounts if you sign up online or pay by monthly direct debit.” While you’re at it, keep your eyes open for good deals on furniture, fixtures and fittings. While you should certainly buy the best you can afford (quality furniture will last much longer and create a better impression among your guests), by looking out for seasonal sales – those just after Christmas, for instance – you can often equip your holiday let with quality items for much less than you’d think! George and the Cornish Traditional Cottages team are experts when it comes to ensuring your holiday let is a success. For more professional advice on making capitalising on yours, why not give them a call?

•EXPERIENCE• RICK STEIN MARLBOROUGH Rick Stein’s restaurant in Marlborough is located on the high street in Lloran House, a stunning Grade II listed building. Guests can enjoy some of Rick’s most iconic seafood dishes that have taken the Cornish foodie scene by storm, such as Dover sole a la meunière and turbot hollandaise, as well as a selection of meat, game and dishes inspired by Rick’s travels around the world. Achieve the classic Cream Cornwall look in your home.

ì ABOVE An illustration of the classic Cream Cornwall look è RIGHT Designed with Cornwall's coast in mind

hat is the classic Cream Cornwall coastal style, I hear you ask. Well, the look is sophisticated – marrying crisp linens, perfectly painted tongue and groove, bold stripes and a distinct palette of whites, neutrals, blues, charcoal and black. Utilising beautiful accessories such as specimen shells, coral, maritime instruments and coastal art with the aim of creating a clean, elegant feel. You don’t have to live by the sea to achieve a coastal feel for your home. Just by putting a few tips into practice you’ll feel like you’ve got the ocean at your doorstep. When it comes to choosing paints, don’t be afraid of using dark blue; the signature Cream Cornwall blue, Star Gazey, works perfectly in a small space as long as you keep the ceiling and woodwork white. Be brave, it will look fantastic! There are loads of options for different types of furniture to tie together your interior design and one that owner Rebecca Heane suggests is to make the most of an ottoman, providing a useful piece of extra seating for visitors and also working as a base for a lovely display of shells and coral. When it comes to style, often the finer details can make all the difference.

Cream Cornwall has a great selection of exclusive lampshades, which are perfect for the coastal look and create a real focal point for any room. Mix these with tailored stripes and washed linens for a classic feel. Whether you prefer Roman blinds or curtains, your windows are sure to look smart with a mitred border to add definition. Choose a contrast colour for the borders to add extra design interest. When deciding on what to put on your walls, make sure to check out Cream Cornwall’s extensive range of beautiful mirrors including the unique shell mirrors, or for something a little different why not hang blue and white bone china plates as statement pieces? If you’re interested in creating a coastal feel at home then feel free to contact the team for a free interiors consultation in the Falmouth store. They’ll be more than happy to talk you through the various options.

FUSIONS Take your taste buds on a journey through Asia with a trip to Truro’s Xen Noodle Bar.

Tempt your taste buds with a trip to Xen

of flavour

his family-run noodle bar in the heart of Truro serves a varied selection of traditional Asian dishes, offering fantastic value for money. The menu promises to take you on a journey across the continent, form the aromatic spices of Thailand and Malaysia to the delicate flavours and textures of Japan. It also includes the all-new South Korean Barbeque Grills, cooked at your table. Everything is freshly prepared on site and made using fresh Asian produce. What’s more, all food is MSG free, with gluten free and vegan options available on request. Relax in the ambient surroundings of the recently refurbished restaurant, or put your feet up with a takeaway in the comfort of your home. Either way, you’re sure to love the offerings of this authentic eatery. A range of restaurant-made sauces, including popular classics such as black bean Szechuan, are also available to take away, ensuring Xen’s special flavour can be achieved at home. Eating different food groups has often been linked with a preferable diet and may be why obesity rates have remained relatively low in Asia (a third less than the western world!), and healthy amounts of soup means low calories! Xen benefits from its true Asian heritage, patriotic cooking and preparation,

delivering food with authenticity, modernity and deliciousness from the heart of Asian culture. The team offer a range of meat-free dishes, which keep saturated fat low, and while there are, of course, the big marinated meat dishes, all in all, the input of seafood on Xen’s menu swings it firmly into the healthy category. And that’s not all! Xen’s dishes utilise fermented and traditionally prepared vegetables in large quantities, which contain healthy bacteria that’s believed to boost your immune system. It also delves into the cruciferous family of cabbages and radishes – known for their anti-cancerous properties – and let’s not forget all the garlic and chilli peppers! Whether you’re eating in or taking away, the Xen team are extremely passionate about delivering an authentic taste of Asia. It’s fair to say you won’t leave feeling disappointed!
