amping has always been one of my favourite holidays. The heady days of the 1980s would see us pack up our family Commer van and make the not-so-long journey from Cadgwith to St Ives to stay on a farm campsite, where Flossie the sheepdog would eagerly greet us year after year. Swapping the van for a lightweight tent, the years that followed are fondly remembered for late nights playing cards around campfires with friends across Cornwall and Europe. Everyone has to have that too-cool-for-school camping moment when they invest in a VW camper. Mine was a bright orange Type 2 fondly named Betsy Bus who safely transported us many thousands of miles. Waking up to a new view each day from Betsy was sheer heaven, even when it was so cold she froze on the inside! With a growing family, and no longer able to fit behind Betsy's wheel due to the baby bump, I came of camping age and forayed into the world of the caravan, albeit a somewhat vintage one. While I was ribbed for having a granny-van, it was bliss! A comfortable bed, shower, toilet and enough headroom to cook standing up seemed like the ultimate in luxury. While everyone's camping experience is different, mine were all connected by one thing; that blissful feeling of relaxation when you escape into nature. Camping forces you to spend time outdoors and off-grid, altering connections to those that don't require charge. Whilst I'm a camping convert, I do appreciate that it's not everyone that is happy to give up the comforts of home and so I have been on a glamping journey, finding some hidden gems where you can appreciate the solitude and serenity of quiet locations without sacrificing any of life's little luxuries. Turn to page 13 to experience some unforgettable Cornish nights under the stars! We're also delighted to showcase a whole host of self-catering cottages from page 33. With spring just around the corner, what better time to start planning your holiday to the Duchy? And, if you own a property that you are looking to holiday let, then there are some excellent marketing packages and expert advice available that will ensure you achieve a great return on your investment. This month we also bring you our bi-annual Cornwall Living Weddings supplement. From page 45, join us as we discover wedding locations, services and accessories that are sure to make your big day one to remember. Finally, as we go to press, one of our favourite local restaurants is reopening after an extensive refurbishment; turn to page 58 to find out more from Jude Kereama, chef patron of Porthleven's fabulous Kota Kai. ...happy reading!

If you’re just looking for some fun, they are the perfect companion for shredding the local trails and tracks. For the campers amongst you, why not carry one on the back of your motorhome using the specially designed bike rack (single or double available) for ease of travel once you are pitched up. They even have the power to tow a small trailer or dog carrier. The SUPER73 is available to buy from £2399 – why not drop by and try one for yourself at MAD Water Sports?

Cornish charity introduces Bereavement Super Heroes A new set of superheroes have arrived at Cornwall Hospice Care in the form of toy cats, dogs, dinosaurs and rabbits. They’ve been beautifully made and donated to the Cornish healthcare charity by a company called ‘Scamp and Dude’ and they’ll be used by the Bereavement Counsellors at Mount Edgcumbe and St Julia’s Hospices. “A colleague flagged the company up to me,” says Ange Bunt. “I’d never heard of them but when they sell a toy, they also give one away to where it might be needed. They’ve already sent us 23.” The toys are dressed in a cloak that has written on it ‘a superhero has my back’. Each has a pocket in to which you can put something special like a picture, a shell or a note from a loved one. The characters also have a label

that says ‘superpower button’ that you can press while thinking positive thoughts. “I’ll be using them as part of my ‘teddy therapy’,” adds Ange. “They’re toys that can be given to children by terminally ill parents or grandparents that’s from them. You can add perfume or after shave and the recipient can hug the character and feel the love and memories of the person who’s died. They give a lot of comfort and of course anyone can have one, it’s not just about leaving a gift for a child. Memory boxes are special but you can’t hug them, these are very personal and tactile.” For more information call 01726 839156 or visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk

A new addition to the Cornish

wellness scene

Spa culture within the UK has long been associated with that of luxury, but across the Nordic regions going to the spa is part of everyday life, with wellness and self-care a top priority. Owner and Founder of Kernow Springs, Martin Dean, explains: “As a company, we have been providing our alternative outdoor spa solutions across the south west for ten years now and to celebrate we’ve launched our very own Nordic Spa! Our aim is to promote the proven benefits of hot and cold immersion therapies as part of a daily routine right here in Cornwall – a family-friendly space, away from screens, as part of the growing community at The Saltbox in

Wadebridge.” Complete with reception area, private changing rooms, and hot and cold showers, clients are invited to soak in the huge wood-fired hot tub, plunge into the cold water dip tank, rest in the wood fired sauna, and repeat... Make sure to use code CH8888 for 25% off your first booking! For more information call 07779 374017 or visit www.kernowsprings.co.uk/nordic-spa

The height of success The Rising Sun, an award-winning vibrant gastropub in Truro where the warmth and atmosphere of an authentic local pub meets chef patron, Tom Hannon’s exquisite gastronomy, has recently been included in the Top 100 Gastropubs in the country. The awards were conceived in 2009 with the purpose of recognising the hardworking individuals in the industry. They are also a go-to source for the best pubs to dine at in the UK. The list is created by collecting votes from more than 100 professionals who

are key people in the hospitality industry. Tom and Katie Hannon have created a hub of the community and a must-visit dining destination over the last nine years and were beyond thrilled to receive the prestigious black envelope just before Christmas awarding them a place amongst the leading gastropubs in the country. estled along the rugged coastline or hidden away in quiet pockets of countryside, Cornwall boasts some incredible glamping gems, perfect for those seeking a blend of adventure and indulgence. With its breathtaking landscapes and charming villages, the Duchy has long been a haven for travellers seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. But it's not just the stunning scenery that draws visitors here, it's the quality of its glamping experiences that sets the county apart as a destination for luxury seekers. Imagine waking up to the sound of waves crashing against the shore, the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze, and the warm glow of the sun filtering through the window. This is the essence of glamping in Cornwall – a sensory experience that reconnects you with nature in the most exquisite way possible. Whether you choose a clifftop retreat overlooking the sea or prefer a secluded woodland escape, the beauty of Cornwall's natural surroundings never fails to captivate. For those who prefer a touch of glamour with their outdoor adventure, Cornwall offers an array of glamping options that redefine the meaning of luxury. From spacious bell tents furnished with plush bedding and cosy rugs to stylish yurts equipped with modern amenities, there's no shortage of superb stays to choose from. Picture yourself unwinding in a private hot tub under the stars or sat with a book looking out over an uninterrupted horizon with only the gulls for company. Read on for some glamping inspiration…

Ekopod Nessa, St Clether Fusing modern design and outdoor living, Nessa is hidden deep in the Cornish countryside. Whilst you couldn’t get much closer to nature, this doesn’t stop Nessa being a cool and stylish retreat. Within its geodesic shape and minimalist white interiors, a striking four-poster bed takes centre stage with thick throws, rugs and a cosy woodburner to ensure snug warmth on cooler evenings. The BBQ on the deck and firepit below set the scene for leisurely afternoons and evenings of culinary delights and celestial contemplation. Adjacent to the pod, a private timber building houses a traditional kitchen and bathtub, turning mundane tasks into delightful outdoor escapades.

The Lake, Maidenwell If you are looking for off-grid luxury, then The Lake is a truly special find. This converted shipping container has the most spectacular location on the edge of a private lake with expansive vistas of the moors your only companion. The lighting and charge points are powered by solar panels, water for cleaning is pumped directly from the lake and even the fridge is natural, being nothing more than a cage hanging from the dock. A rowing boat is available to hire so you can drift around the lake or simply cast the rod provided off the pier and see if you get a bite!

The Floathouse Amelie, Penryn This unique converted barge is the ultimate calm and contemplative space. The vast openplan living space boasts floor-to-ceiling glazing where guests can watch the boats potter up and down the river, governed only by the ebb and flow of the tide. The large outdoor decked area is perfect for relaxing on, or why not take the rowing boat down river to explore the secluded creeks and inlets? The three cabin bedrooms means there’s space for the whole family and with Biomass heating, rain water harvesting, electricity from renewable sources and the use of reclaimed and local wood, The Floathouse Amelie strives to minimise her impact on the environment.

Pedney, Buryas Bridge Unique rustic charm hidden within a sub-tropical paradise is the order of the day at Pedney. This cosy shepherd’s hut has been lovingly handcrafted and its warm wooden tones invite hunkering down in front of the woodburner. Its fully-equipped kitchen and magnificent bathroom add those luxurious touches that elevate this to a gorgeous glamping experience. The enclosed decked area is kissed by the fronds of sub-tropical planting that make you feel as if you have been transported to more exotic climes.

Mount Lookout, Ludgvan With its elevated position looking out over St Michael’s Mount and Mount’s Bay, this luxury glamping pod affords views for days. In spring and summer, swathes of wild flowers nod their heads in the warm breeze as you sip a morning coffee on the deck, contemplating the day’s adventure. The wood-clad cabin is cosiness personified but lacks none of those little luxuries that define a glamping stay, complete with a full kitchen and private shower room. A hot tub and fire pit make for effortless evenings of total relaxation.

 ABOVE Pedney offers a rural escape far from the madding crowd, uniquehideaways. com

Skylark, Mylor Bridge Sklyark is a tiny house ‘cabin’ reached via a winding path through the trees. As you emerge into the clearing, there are views across the meadows to Mylor creek beyond. The area is a rambler’s paradise with river walks aplenty and several good pubs nearby for refuelling. The cabin has been thoughtfully designed and handcrafted, with every detail attended to. A mezzanine bed invites weary heads after a day’s exploration, that is if you can tear yourself away from the warmth of the cosy woodburner.

 BELOW Tiny house luxury at Skylark, uniquehideaways. com

Birdsong, Penhale Imagine a pretty cabin and stunning shepherd’s hut complemented by a sun-soaked deck and hot tub, all set within lush grassy meadow and that's Birdsong. This countryside hideaway allows for ultimate relaxation with only the sound of the wind on the grass, the hum of the bees from the cabin’s living roof and, of course, the gentle tweet of the birds for company. The interior has been lovingly designed to echo the countryside beyond with muted greens and natural textures creating a peaceful ambience. When the sun sets why not slip into the bubbling hot tub with a glass of fizz in hand and enjoy the light show?

The Eagle, Whitsand Bay It’s hard to find the words for the location of this clifttop eyrie, such is its breathtaking position. With no near neighbours, this handcrafted cabin is as inviting on summer days as it is when the winter storms arrive. Reached on foot via the cliffpath, this is a place to retreat for ultimate relaxation with interior décor reflecting the colours of sand and sea. Curl up on the sofa in front of the woodburner and watch the waves, rock gently on the swing seat as you gaze at the horizon or simply lie back on the deck and watch the gulls wheel in the wind.

overack is a hidden gem nestled into a hillside on the southern edge of the Lizard Peninsula. The village has a thriving community with excellent amenities including a shop, pub and numerous cafés and still boasts a working harbour with the local fishing fleet landing their catch daily on the quay. The main beach exposes a swathe of golden sand at low tide and the South West Coast Path winds through the village. Stumble upon the nearby Meers Beach, or the Terence Coventry's Sculpture Garden which you'll find at the top of the village, making this a coastal idyll like no other. From the exterior, Dolor Cottage has all the attributes of a typically Cornish fisherman's cottage, with whitewashed cob walls and a low door, but step over the threshold and you’ll find a deceptively spacious interior that has been

sympathetically renovated to preserve original exposed beams and a vast inglenook fireplace. Flagstone floors complement the simple colour palette of the interior decor which has been kept deliberately minimal to create a feeling of space. Indeed, the farmhouse-style kitchen is much larger than you would expect to find in a traditional Cornish cottage, with ample space for a six-seat dining table, perfect for enjoying a fish supper with a glass of something cold. Wind up the open-tread staircase to the first floor and you’ll find a spacious master bedroom with en-suite shower room, along with two equally good-sized guest rooms that share a family bathroom. Outside, the compact yet bijoux rear seating area benefits from sea views. Many a sunny morning or balmy evening can be spent here watching the to-ings and fro-ings of the harbour below. Dolor Cottage comes with both a private parking space and a good-sized garage which are enviable additions in any Cornish village. The property has been run as a successful holiday home in recent years but would equally make a wonderful family bolt hole from which to enojy both Coverack and the wider Lizard Peninsula, all while creating a multitude of happy memories.

THE

ultimate PRIZE

Omaze launches its latest monthly prize draw with the chance to win a specular, five-bedroom coastal retreat in Cornwall. é ABOVE This amazing property could be yours!

EXPERIENCE DID YOU KNOW? The house is less than ten miles from Truro, Cornwall’s only city, where there is a mainline station with services to London Paddington and the well-regarded Truro School. Cornwall Airport at Newquay is less than 20 miles away and offers direct flights to a number of UK destinations including London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, East Midlands and Belfast City.

R

aising crucial funds for global international charity partner, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), one lucky person is guaranteed to win a stunning property in Cornwall worth over £3 million, plus an additional £100,000 in cash as part of Omaze’s new prize draw. With nature in freefall, the WWF (wwf.org.uk ) is urgently tackling the underlying causes that are driving the decline – especially the food system and climate change – finding solutions so future generations have a world with thriving habitats and wildlife. Its ground-breaking scientific research, global influence and the backing of its supporters such as Omaze, are all part of its bid to ensure that the natural world’s vital signs are recovering by 2030. The money raised through the partnership with Omaze will help with restoring UK coasts, driving action from UK government and empowering young people to take action for nature – all helping to bring our world back to life. The draw is backed by Actor, Impressionist and WWF fellow Alistair McGowan, who said: “I’m very happy to be supporting this

partnership between WWF and Omaze. I’ve been a proud supporter of all the work WWF does for many years, becoming an ambassador in 2005 and subsequently a Fellow for this excellent and respected organisation. “WWF work incredibly hard – conducting research and carrying out projects in the UK and around the world – to protect nature and wildlife and to restore it too. The money raised through this partnership with Omaze will make a real difference and help WWF to continue to protect so many incredible species and bring our world back to life.” James Oakes, Chief International Officer at Omaze, said: “We’re delighted to be partnering with WWF for our latest house draw. By offering this gorgeous house in Cornwall, along with £100,000 in cash, we’re giving people the chance to live mortgage and rent free for the rest of their life – as well as raising money for charities whilst introducing them to brand-new audiences that they otherwise wouldn't reach. We’re tremendously proud that the Omaze community has already raised over £31 million for good causes across the UK.”

Incorporated into the open plan kitchen/ dining area is a spacious family room with a large stone fireplace for gathering around on stormy days. Sliding doors seamlessly lead from here to a stone terrace that provides an effortless setting for outdoor entertaining. There’s a handy boot room on this floor; a unique feature of the property which connects through to large coat

ith over a decade of expertise in renewable energy installations, GreenGenUK has successfully implemented thousands of projects. While we often report on their domestic clients, their commitment to delivering high-quality, sustainable commercial solutions has made them a trusted name in the renewable industry. A recent installation at Dales Cornwall’s, Scorrier, saw the installation of 245 JA Solar 410w modules working seamlessly with three Solis 3-phase inverters, a Solis Export Manager, and a Renusol Metasol mounting system. While this configuration may sound something of a mouthful, the bottom line is that this system was designed for optimal energy production and efficiency, as well as providing robust warranty and back-up guarantees (such as a 25-year salt air resistance promise) that installations in Cornwall require. The environmental impact and energy generation has been nothing short of impressive: the newly installed solar system is projected to generate nearly 100,000 kWh of clean energy annually. This not only translates to a significant reduction in electricity bills for Dales Cornwall but also contributes to an annual offset of a staggering 30+ tonnes of CO2 emissions. GreenGenUK was able complete the planned installation

over just a two-week period, co-ordinating scaffold and material delivery, installation and commissioning, all without hindering their client's day-to-day operations. With the export manager in place, realtime performance monitoring is achieved via an online platform, allowing not only visibility of how much the solar system is generating, but also how much the building is using from both the solar and grid, giving a total benefit of the system. In the first six months of operation, the system produced almost 10% more than predicted, with over 70% being consumed directly on-site. These accurate readings will be used in the future to determine the viability of energy storage systems and other devices to further enhance this commercial solar system. If this all sounds too good to be true and you’re in Cornwall or Devon, we highly recommend booking a survey to discover how your property could harness the power of the sun today, for a greener tomorrow.

T

he Cornish way of life is relaxed, free-spirited and adventurous, but perhaps you’re lucky enough to know this already. Whether you already own a holiday home in Cornwall or you’re simply looking to secure a slice of heaven by the coast, Cornish Escapes is on hand to help guide you through the process of letting your holiday home. With more than 20 years of experience, the friendly team understand that letting your holiday home can be a stressful process, and is there to ease the strain of opening up your home to others while ensuring the maximum return on your financial investment. 2023 was a record-breaking year for Cornish Escapes with a 40% increase in bookings thanks to its ever-expanding portfolio for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Plans to broaden the Cornish Escapes portfolio to meet the demands of those visiting the Duchy in new coastal destinations, from North Cornwall to Mounts Bay, are already underway. Just one new property that achieved immediate bookings the moment it hit the website in December was Number One Peninsula above Porthminster beach, which offers beautiful sea views, flexible breaks, parking and the opportunity for dog-friendly retreats. For those looking to achieve a better balance between managing and marketing their own holiday homes, Cornish Escapes offer a fair and

honest commission rate of 9% plus VAT. Receive marketing, support and expertise from a Cornish-based team who are familiar with the stunning county while you retain management and servicing control of your property, be it first hand or keeping your preferred trades in place. While very well established in St Ives and surrounding areas like Carbis Bay, Lelant and Hayle (and offering a 12% plus VAT contract for a Fully Managed service in this area), Cornish Escapes’ reach extends all over Cornwall, and the team are well placed to advise you on your holiday home, no matter where it might be here in the Duchy. Don’t worry if you have a busy schedule and the prospect of this seems time consuming. The new owner page on the website lets owners book a free 30-minute consultation with the New Business Development Manager to discuss your needs. Essentially, letting your holiday home has never been easier.

TIMELESS

Celebrating 60 years as a family-owned Cornish holiday letting agent.

I

n an industry that has witnessed tremendous evolution and growth, it can be challenging and sometimes overwhelming to navigate holiday bookings with so many options out there. Despite this, Cornish Traditional Cottages stands tall as a beacon of unwavering commitment to authentic holiday experiences. As it marks its 60th year as an independent, family-owned Cornish holiday letting agent, its journey encapsulates not just the passing of time but a legacy of creating memories that endure. Founded in 1962, the holiday letting agent’s roots run deep within the stunning landscape of Cornwall. Six decades of navigating the ebb and flow of holiday trends has fortified its belief in the power of personal service. In an era dominated by corporate giants, it continues to champion the essence of bespoke service that the large nationals find challenging to emulate. What sets Cornish Traditional Cottages apart is not merely its portfolio of exclusively Cornish holiday homes spanning every corner of Cornwall, from the rugged coasts to the idyllic countryside, but the unparalleled personal connection the team fosters with both property owners and guests. They understand that a truly exceptional holiday experience extends beyond a comfortable stay; it's about feeling a genuine connection to the destination, its people, and the warmth of Cornish hospitality.

Cornish Traditional Cottage’s commitment to personal service is epitomised in its approach towards its property owners. It collaborates closely, offering a platform that transcends the transactional, where each property is not just a listing but an integral part of its shared journey. The success of its owners is the heartbeat of Cornish Traditional Cottages, and as it celebrates its 60th year, it extends its gratitude to the remarkable individuals who have entrusted it with their Cornish retreats. As the agent reflects on the past six decades, it is not merely celebrating a milestone; it’s savouring the countless stories woven into the fabric of its existence. Cornish Traditional Cottages, at 60, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of family, authenticity and the timeless allure of Cornwall. Here's to the next chapter of crafting memories that will endure for another 60 years and beyond.

lex Davies, Operations Manager based in the Carbis Bay office, tells us that the team is striving for continued success in 2024: “Carbis Bay has long been a Mecca for those in search of sun, sea, surf – pretty much the whole Mediterranean holiday experience, minus the flights and transfer times! But whilst the golden sand, crystal-blue waters and seafront restaurants mean the holiday destination remains one of the most sought after in the country, ensuring holiday makers choose your holiday accommodation over all others for their visit is a whole different challenge. “We understand that at the present time, securing consistent year-round bookings is important to holiday home owners. That is why we provide a very specialised package to owners, with an incredible range of expertise at our disposal. With our help, owners see excellent booking numbers, with the peace of mind that their holiday home is being cared for superbly by our property experts.” In light of the ever-evolving needs and requirements of customers, as well as the hugely competitive self-catering landscape in our region, Carbis Bay Holidays knows the importance of outstanding marketing, including offering flexible booking terms. “As part of the national company Sykes Cottages, we are proud to have a wealth of resources at our disposal,” adds Alex.

“Recently, these have included a free cancellation option and a low deposit booking scheme, both of which have made booking holidays more accessible to guests, but are funded by the agency to reduce risk to owners. We use our eight-figure marketing budget to ensure we are seen across multiple media platforms, including leading partner sites such as Booking.com and Airbnb. This, coupled with our ability to offer our customers flexibility, is key to securing high numbers of year-round bookings for owners.” In addition to very successful marketing strategies both on a regional and national level, Carbis Bay Holidays also have a fabulous team of property experts based across the two offices in Carbis Bay, each on hand to take care of the day-to-day running of the holiday properties for owners. With 24-hour customer support and a specialist property maintenance team, they have everything covered! For owners, letting your properties couldn’t be simpler – the dedicated owner app and portal mean everything is stored and managed in one place. So, you can simply sit back and relax whilst your bookings roll in…

Wedding rings

steeped in meaning If you’re engaged and looking for a truly unique wedding ring with which to tie the knot, then look no further than Justin Duance and his team, who craft bespoke jewellery beautifully cast in beach sand. They also welcome anybody to be a part of the making process, as they understand that an item as precious and significant as a wedding ring should be something that gives you joy each and every time you slip it on. With this in mind, you’re encouraged to choose the beach sand that your rings are cast in. It could be a beach that you’ve loved since childhood, or one that holds special memories for you and your spouse-to-be. Whatever the reason, the sand not only creates a unique texture on the ring, but tiny grains are captured in the precious metal so you can carry a piece of your favourite place with you everywhere you go.

The Justin Duance team are also fully committed to using only recycled precious metals and fully traced, fairly traded diamonds and gemstones. Or perhaps you have an heirloom that you would like to repurpose into a ring that suits you and your style without losing its sentimental significance? If so, they can help there too, recasting your passed-down gold and gemstones into beautiful new sandcast designs, making your wedding ring that bit more personal and unique to you. ou’ll find The Jewellery Workshop on Porthleven’s harbourside. Owned by Clair and Paul Pennington for over 12 years, they have become renowned across Cornwall as creators and curators of exquisite pieces. Specialising in bespoke wedding jewellery, each piece is carefully crafted, creating heirlooms to be cherished for a lifetime. If you’re searching for a unique wedding band, then you need look no further. Bespoke wedding rings can be designed to the customer’s exact requirement and if they have their own gold, perhaps from an inherited piece that has become outdated in style, this can be melted down and given new life. While classic solitaires and traditional bands can be catered for, where other wedding band designs are far from traditional and can encompass a variety of shapes and sizes. They can be designed to slot seamlessly alongside your existing engagement ring and if you have a favourite beach, Clair and Paul can even use the sand to cast the metal, giving the ring a unique texture. The designs are effortless, yet elegant, giving the air of understated luxury; they are visually captivating while remaining suitable for daily wear. “We can also design stone-set wedding rings and bespoke engagement rings,” says Paul, “as everything

is made in our harbourside workshop. Men’s engagement and wedding bands have also become increasingly popular as modern grooms look to mark the occasion in style, whether that be a heavy textured rings or a more fuss-free silhouette.” As a family run business established in 2012, the team at The Jewellery Workshop is very proud of its exquisite workmanship and service; their Facebook and Google reviews are certainly something to be very proud of. “We pride ourselves in giving great customer satisfaction,” adds Clair, “With three makers working on commissions, alterations and repairs, we have a broad scope in terms of design and so are also able to offer bridal jewellery that can even be colourcoordinated jewellery with bridesmaid dresses or the wedding theme.” If you’re looking for something unique for the big day, then The Jewellery Workshop is a must-visit.

launch and ReRENOVATION Words by Jude Kereama

Porthleven’s Kota Kai Bar & Restaurant reopens it doors, revealing an extensive refurbishment and a brand-new menu, bringing a fresh look and feel to this much-loved eaterie.

K

ota Kai Bar & Restaurant is situated in the heart of the historic Cornish village of Porthleven, which I am delighted to call home. Overlooking the harbour and just moments from our sister restaurant, Kota, I am proud that Kai has become a favourite of the local community and visitors, but this year we recognised that after 13 successful years, Kai was ready for a reinvention. Kota Kai was originally created to provide a family-friendly option with integrity. Our intention was to create a restaurant that offered a laid-back, welcoming atmosphere with a delicious menu, peppered with Asian elements; one that would stand out from the usual family-friendly fayre, and give a nod to my half Maori, half Chinese Malay heritage.

Now, 13 years on, with my experienced and loyal team of Head Chef Marcus Houghton and General Manager Jenna Sawle, Kai is being relaunched with a full refurbishment and renovation. Our intention is to create a version of the restaurant that retains its warm welcome, but with added sophistication. It felt like the right time to evolve the offering at Kota Kai to something a little bit more grown up. It is important to us that it still feels like a welcoming place for families but is a destination for drinks and snacks too. The open-plan layout really highlights our special location, drawing the eye to the views across the harbour. We also have a slightly different menu format with some great new dishes we’ve been working on, accompanied by an extensive drinks list which we are

excited to introduce to our guests. Myself and the team have worked with Steve Coombe from 3idog to refurbish the restaurant interiors and deliver the vision for the refresh. A new colour scheme has been introduced alongside more natural materials and textures, to create a calmer, more cohesive space. A long statement bar and new dining furniture has been installed. Bespoke handmade lighting by Lovelinkin baskets, artwork by local artists including Felix Griffiths, Zee Van G, Jo Hague and photography by Jack Johns adorns the walls. We’ve used local tradesmen and suppliers where possible for the work, including the installation of a statement woodburner from Wendron Stoves. It’s been all hands on deck for a fast turnaround, the team have all worked so hard and I am so happy to see the end results. With an extensive cocktail menu by The Bearded Barman, Chris Jarrett, a wine list with many New World wines and a new bar area, Kai will be a place to kick back with a cocktail and snacks with friends, or a meal overlooking the harbour. In the summer months our guests can sit outside and take in the sea views, ordering from a new ground-floor bar. With 90 covers, we hope Kai will be buzzing! It’s a popular destination with unbeatable views, and while the interiors have come of age, we intend to maintain the laidback atmosphere and delightful menu it’s become known for. With our new Josper grill, our menu features

dishes cooked over the charcoal embers, giving things a smoky touch, and will remain true to our ethos of sourcing some of the best ingredients from Cornwall and the West Country; expect feature dishes such as Cornish Hanger Steak with Asian herb dressing or Char Sui Monkfish on grilled Gear Farm greens. Throughout January, my attention has also been on the reopening of Kota following its annual January break. Kota’s menu, like Kai’s, focuses on using local and seasonal produce with an Asian twist, but with 40 covers and holding three AA Rosettes, Kota is our relaxed high-end dining offering. With Head chef Ross Sloan heading up the kitchen team again for 2024, and Elle Lagdon front of house, we have decided to retain our popular tasting menu concept but with a slight refresh and change of direction as the menu has taken inspiration from our relationships with some new suppliers. We are also offering a small tasting menu at lunch times on a Friday and Saturday, giving people a chance to sample a taste of Kota over a relaxed lunch. I am proud that Kota’s success continues to be recognised by its many accolades and continues to go from strength to strength, and I’m excited to see what 2024 will bring!

EXPERIENCE DID YOU KNOW? From Kota Kai’s grand reopening on Wednesday 7th February, it will be open Wednesday through Monday for lunch and dinner (closed Sunday evenings) until Easter when it will be open seven days a week. Main plates are from £15.50 and wellbehaved dogs are welcome during lunchtime service.

EXPERIENCE DISCOVER MORE... The main harbour-view bed and breakfast room at sister restaurant Kota – one of three available to guests – has also just been given a refresh. Situated a moment’s walk from Kota Kai, it’s the perfect stop for a 'dine and stay' and gives visitors a chance to sample some of the other great restaurants in Porthleven, for either a short-break or a longer stay.

LYDIA CORBETT SYLVETTE DAVID A Retrospective | 8th March - 6th April 2024

Lydia Corbett, also known as Sylvette David and known to art lovers all over the world as “The Girl with the Ponytail”, is Pablo Picasso’s last living muse. Born in Paris in 1934, Sylvette was invited by Picasso to his studio in Vallauris at the age of nineteen after he caught sight of her the previous year through an old pottery window and became fascinated by her. Picasso internalised her as his muse, in drawings and a series of lithographs, and she regularly posed for him from that fateful meeting onwards. The meeting would alter Sylvette’s life. Sylvette David was for Picasso, his last, unobtainable love. For many years Lydia Corbett has divided her time between homes in Devon and Provence. A hugely talented and still prolific artist in her own right, Corbett’s works tell the story of a woman who shared Picasso’s artistic life for a time and intertwined it with her own, continuing to develop her strong artistic voice.

The exhibition at the Penwith Gallery is one of Corbett’s most comprehensive, bringing together early and late works, the watercolours and oils of the past thirty years alongside ceramics which the artist has gathered and repurposed, using them as a blank canvas for her self-portraits and recurring motifs. Many of the works attest to a return to source - memories of Picasso, of the inner life of objects. Corbett recaptures Sylvette as a girl, the subjects of her art through a process of assimilation and reduction - a vase of flowers, an old kettle, a church, the horses, the hammocks, the dappled sunshine of Camaret in Provence and the Mediterranean Sea. Lydia Corbett is a visionary artist, no less visionary for her failing eyesight, as her subject is focused on inner vision, inner presence. Lydia Corbett's Retrospective Exhibition at the Penwith Gallery is curated by the artist along with Lucien Berman.

ART

Art in Focus CAPTIVATING CORNWALL The fundamentals of the natural world and the interconnection of living in Cornwall inspire artist and illustrator, Jo Crusoe. Painting from memory and observations, photographs are rarely used, the artist preferring instead to observe in the moment and capture the narrative, allowing it to evolve on the surface. Working with oils, acrylic, gouache, chalk paint and inks, Jo mixes her own colours, allowing space for light and movement and has developed her own embossing technique over 20 years ago, combining powder metals and liquid precious metals to illuminate and add texture to her work. Jo also creates a variety of wildlife sculptures from clay and wool, building armatures and working both from memory and her own original drawings. Pictured here is one of Jo's paintings, 'Tranquil Evening Light'.

Make waves with Colour & Space

Precious pieces Kathleen Ashcroft’s jewellery is designed and created from her workshop in the beautiful historic Market House, St Austell where she also holds day workshops and longer courses. Her work draws inspiration from architectural shapes and forms, as well as from the history of abandoned or ruined buildings, which are brought back to life in each piece of jewellery.

Kathleen uses traditional jewellery making techniques combined with modern CAD technology, which plays an important role in the precision of some of the designs. As a maker, Kathleen is conscious of the impact creating can have on the environment and so uses recycled precious metals, making in small batches, allowing customers to make considered sustainable choices when it comes to choosing one of her beautiful pieces.

An example of which is her Keepers Collection, inspired by the building blocks of Smeaton’s Tower in Plymouth.

Visit Colour & Space as we approach the spring and you’ll be welcomed by a fresh new collection of ocean-inspired work. After last year’s successful exhibition, Joy Clifton is back with three new hand-painted bellyboards. These exclusive new boards will explore the tidal change at Perranporth beach, showing how we interact with the sea and coast at different times of the day. The gallery will also be showcasing their collection of local artists that take inspiration from the surrounding area. The new display will include original paintings, limited-edition prints, fused glass, ceramics, jewellery and much more. Colour & Space is open on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the winter, or you can browse and buy online with free UK shipping on most items. For more information email info@colourandspace.co.uk or visit www.colourandspace.co.uk

Take the ocean home Mike Lacey, owner and founder of the renowned Waves Gallery, has been capturing the essence of the ocean for over a decade. Working from his base in the fishing village of Porthleven, some of his favourite spots to snap the ocean include Praa Sands, Kynance Cove, Porthcurno, and of course, the reefs and clifftops of his home village.

The finished results of Mike’s work are waterproof, UV protected and easy to clean, making them perfect for your kitchen or bathroom. What’s more, you’re not restricted to standard sizes or proportions! Instead, give Mike and the team the measurements you require, and they’ll create a bespoke backdrop, made to measure for you and your space.

The gallery itself stocks striking splashbacks so you can bring a touch of Cornwall’s marine world to your home.

Their sting is like an electric shock, yet they do not fail to mesmerise. astle Air was founded by Roy Flood in 1979 at a time when there were no helicopter charter businesses in the South West. Fast forward to today and not only is Castle Air the biggest seller of Leonardo helicopters in Europe, if not the world, its growth has seen it become the largest VIP charter business in the UK for helicopters, and one of the biggest in Europe. Helicopter owners arriving by private aircraft can benefit from the interline service available at their Biggin Hill Airport base as Managing Director, Ross Bunyard explains: “We can have a helicopter waiting there to take them on to their final destination – I refer to them as time machines! If you’re a busy businessperson, you can get around the UK very quickly by air. A trip that might take you a week by car or train, you can do in a day. Helicopters help companies grow, because they give you back that valuable commodity of time. “We are hugely busy in London, interlining into Battersea heliport, which is the only one of its kind at the heart of the city and can fly clients across Europe. From Biggin Hill it’s just a 50-minute flight to Paris. The large twin-engine aircraft we deal with offer an enclosed VIP cabin space, and the AW109

can comfortably seat six passengers. They are very stable, so you can work from the back or simply sip a glass of champagne and enjoy the aerial view!” Offering an end-to-end service, clients simply need to ring Castle Air, tell them their requirements and then the experienced team can organise the whole trip. “We can arrange for a car to collect clients or, if their garden or land is large enough, one of our pilots will fly the helicopter to them," Ross continues. "At the end of their flight we will have private cars waiting to take them to their final destination. If you don’t own a helicopter you can benefit from Castle Air’s charter service, which we run to all the major sporting events in the UK – including the upcoming horse racing events at Cheltenham, Aintree and Epsom – and we even have our own VIP suites at the Formula One at Silverstone.”
