Er umfasst einen privaten Beachclub, eine große Sonnenterrasse, die teilweise offen und teilweise von einer hohen Palapa überdacht ist, ein Esszimmer für vierzehn Personen und ein Wohnzimmer. THE CONTRAST IS INTERESTING: While sleek lines dominate within the interiors, the façade facing out towards the lake features three loggias on different floors, each with more elaborate terracotta balustrades.

Besides affording beautiful views over Lake Maggiore, they are also an idiosyncratic and elegant feature of this property, which was designed by Aldo Rossi. The villa was built in the same ancient tradition common among craftsmen in the Alto Verbano region, whereby they used leftover parts of large blocks of granite to construct their houses. THE “KEIZERSGRACHT” canal is the middle of three main canals that form the 17th century canal belt in Amsterdam’s Old Town. Living here is a rare privilege indeed. Entering through the left-hand building at Keizersgracht 74, the grand communal hallway is lined with marble. THIS HOUSE ON THE “SINGEL” CANAL was built in the early 17th century and has just undergone three years of extensive refurbishment work that included the laying of new foundations, as well as brand new wiring and installations. The grand double doors of the main entrance lead through to the hallway to the apartment on the main floor. The reception area with its lofty ceilings, strikingly tall windows and elegant doors opens on to a spacious cloakroom and an eat-in kitchen overlooking the garden and canal. A beautifully proportioned room at the front of the property features a built-in window seat with charming views of the canal. Other highlights include an original marble fireplace, oak parquet floors, decorative wooden panelling, and a ceiling in the style of Louis XVI. The two staircases date from the early 18th century and lead to the living levels below. The quiet rear building can be accessed via the hallway, or via a marble staircase from the lower ground level. The spacious master bedroom at the rear has three windows overlooking the garden, and offers no end of peace and privacy.

Der Raum verfügt über einen originalen Marmorkamin, Eichenparkett, dekorative Holzvertäfelungen und eine Decke im Stil Louis XVI. Die beiden Treppen stammen aus dem frühen 18. Jahrhundert und führen zu den darunterliegenden Wohnebenen. Das ruhige Hinterhaus ist sowohl durch den Flur als auch durch das unterste Wohngeschoss über eine Marmortreppe erreichbar. Das geräumige hintere Hauptschlafzimmer mit drei Fenstern zur Gartenseite bietet die gewünschte Ruhe und Privatsphäre.

JUST BEHIND THE ELBE DYKE near Brunsbüttel, this thatched cottage dates back to 1890 and is set in a picturesque garden with mature trees. This style of home combining brick and thatch has been typical for northern Germany for centuries. In this case, extensive refurbishment and renovation work was carried out in 2017 and 2021, meaning that this heritage building caters to all modern living standards. The bright, open plan ground floor has a charm all of its own. Most of the interior walls have been removed for a greater sense of space, and the load-bearing beams have been whitewashed along with the beamed ceiling. This evokes an almost Scandinavian feel, enhanced still further by a cosy gas fireplace. The homely atmosphere continues upstairs, thanks to the sloping ceilings of the pitched roof. The semi-circular dormer window looks out over the dyke to the mouth of the River Elbe. There are various different seating areas in the garden. Pleasurable hours can be spent outside, relaxing in the beach chair – also typical for northern Germany – and breathing in the salty sea air.

AM ELBDEICH bei Brunsbüttel schmiegt sich diese Reetdachkate aus dem Jahr 1890 in einen Garten mit altem Baumbestand hinter dem Deich. Der Häusertypus, der Backstein mit einem reetgedeckten Dach kombiniert, ist seit Jahrhunderten typisch für Norddeutschland. In diesem Fall erfolgten in den Jahren 2017 und 2021 umfangreiche Sanierungs- und Renovierungsarbeiten, sodass das traditionelle Gebäude allen modernen Anforderungen gerecht wird. Das offen und hell gestaltete Erdgeschoss hat seinen ganz eigenen Charme. Die meisten Wände wurden für ein großzügigeres Wohngefühl entfernt, die tragenden Balken ebenso wie die Balkenholzdecke geweißt. Das fast schon skandinavisch anmutende Ambiente wird durch einen Gas-Kaminofen vervollständigt. Gemütlich ist es auch im Obergeschoss, in dem die Dachschrägen eine heimelige Atmosphäre erzeugen. Aus dem halbrunden Gaubenfenster fällt der Blick über den Deich auf die Elbmündung. Im Garten gibt es verschiedene Sitzplätze. Dort kann man die salzige Luft der nahen Nordsee riechen und Mußestunden in einem stilechten, ebenfalls typisch norddeutschen, Strandkorb verbringen.
