success Workwear isn’t just about bright colours and tape. Proper workwear makes your job easier, and in extreme environments, can mean the difference between life and death

hen it comes to issues such as basic comfort and the safety of your workforce in hazardous environments, there is a lot more to think about with workplace clothing than just the colour or the style. Although there are plenty of brands selling garments at different price points, saving a few dollars in the short term won’t necessarily be a wise investment: and at worst, it can cost you your life.

“It’s one of the greatest frustrations in the industry—the amount of cheap product that’s out there, and unfortunately consumers are unaware of what it is that they actually are buying,” says Jason Baxter of Prime Mover Workwear.

“They see a garment on a shelf in that $2 shop environment and it looks hi-vis (high-visibility) and so they feel that they’re being protected. They’re buying on price without really understanding that there is certain compliance that needs to be achieved. Sometimes the consumer doesn’t know what they’re looking for.

They just buy product they think gives them coverage but doesn’t deliver at all.

It’s because they’re not tested, not signed off and not conforming to the Australia/ New Zealand standards,” he says.

For the best quality hi-vis workwear, for example, you need garments that are compliant to Australian standards AS/NZS4602.1.2011, which deals with the amount of, and positioning of, the high-vis tape on the garment, and ASNZ1906.4.2010, which deals with the luminosity of the high-visibility material on the clothing.

“The standards are very, very rigid in Australia,” says Mark Kessell from Huski, which supplies hivis safety wear, workwear, security and casual wear.

“With a day and night garment, we only use the 3M tape because although there are other cheaper tapes that may comply to the standard, they may not comply after 20 industrial washes.

That’s why we only use the best tape money can buy.”

testing, including right down to the labelling. So authorities shouldn’t pass you if you produce a garment that’s compliant, but your labelling is not correct.

It’s a very strict, rigid process where there’s not a lot of flexibility.”

This produces a challenge for consumers, who may want to buy a compliant, tested item, but can’t always easily recognise it.

“That’s why labelling is important,” says Baxter. “The first thing a consumer should do is look to see if it’s got compliance indicated on the labelling.

And it has to state the whole part of the compliance on the labelling to show that it is compliant. There are some garments that say it is AS4602, but if they don’t have the following part, which is .1.2011, then that’s not compliant, because it could be 4602 standards from a number of years ago.”

Even if you’re not looking for hi-vis wear, the quality of the construction of the garment is paramount, and makes a huge difference to worker comfort, and as a result, productivity.

“When you’re looking at the comfort of the garment, what you’re actually talking about is breathability, and whether or not they stay dry in them,” says Stuart Revill of Rainbird Workwear, a company that makes wet weather workwear.

“The garments we manufacture are fully seam-sealed,” he explains. “Often cheaper brands aren’t fully waterproof.

So, for instance, it might be waterproof fabric but the seams aren’t taped on the inside. If that was the case, across the shoulders, water would get in. Also, a lot of cheaper products aren’t breathable.

So from a customer point of view, it’s like you’re wearing plastic bags. In better quality products the ratings of the fabric are much better than cheaper products.”

He adds that Rainbird Workwear puts a three-year warranty on all garments— an indicator of the quality of their construction. “We guarantee them for that period of time, but they last longer than that. But I think some cheaper products wouldn’t last very long at all.”

Even if comfort and productivity aren’t important to you, when it comes to working in dangerous environments the quality and compliance to standards is vital—it can mean the difference between life and death.

“When you’ve got garments that are meant to be arc flash resistant, you’re talking about a life-saving technology,”

says Huski’s Kessell. “There’s no room for compromise when it comes to lifesaving technology. It has to be world’s best practice, and it has to be tested. But testing alone is $4000 per arc flash fire in controlled environment to see whether the garment does combust. It’s not as simple as: does it burn or not? There are other important questions: How quickly does it burn? In what air mix will it combust?

There are no Australian standards for flame retardants, but there’s a European standard, and a UK standard which is the world’s best practice, and that’s what we follow in Australia. In the environment where you’ve got linesmen in Australia working on live circuit boards and live wires, for example, there’s no room for compromise when it comes to that technology.”

Kessell says that Huski’s attention to detail and quality is where the company really adds value to consumers. “For example, for the mining industry, we have our Currentbrand jackets,” he says. “We have a world’s first technology—the standard for underground mining is antistatic and some competitors are using a 100 per cent cotton and claiming they’re antistatic. taken antistatic to the next level. We use 100 per cent cotton garments and only use non-combustible zips and studs. And then what we’ve done is, we’ve woven a carbon fibre through the cotton, through the weave, so that if there is a spark that does appear on the garment from some sort of friction then the carbon fibre will distribute the spark throughout the garment so it won’t ignite.”

It’s the attention to detail that makes all the difference with this kind of workwear.

“Everything has a comprehensive warranty where we repair or replace our garments if they’re faulty,” Kessell adds. “We use only the best accessories.

We only use 3M tape for our day-night garments. We only use YKK zips and studs. We use good genuine Cordura for our trim. So we use the best money can buy. And we triple stitch and we bar tack all our seams. This is a garment that will be used for not just a guy who is waving traffic through, who needs a hi-vis vest.

This is life-saving technology.” So as you see there’s more to workplace clothing than just colours. It’s vitally important that you purchase the correct product for the job.
