The first fuel for Australia's recovery Welcome to the National Energy Efficiency Conference 2020. This has been an incredibly difficult year for Victorians. But as we emerge from the challenges we’ve faced, we have an opportunity to consider our priorities and think about the future we would like to create for Victoria. And for us, that’s a clean energy future with energy efficiency at the heart. Recently, the Victorian Government announced an unprecedented $797 million energy affordability package as part of the Victorian Budget 2020/21. This includes the largest residential energy efficiency funding package ever seen in any state’s history. Measures in this package will improve the energy efficiency of up to 1.6 million homes, with a focus on supporting the most vulnerable. This includes a $335 million program to put new and efficient heating and cooling in 250,000 homes, $112 million to improve the energy efficiency of 35,000 social housing properties and $14 million to expand our flagship Victorian Energy Upgrades program – further cementing its place as Australia’s largest energy efficiency program. We’re also expanding our government’s landmark Solar Homes program, with a $191 million boost to meet the surging demand for rooftop solar in our state. Together, this package will support thousands of jobs and save Victorians more than $5 billion on their energy bills over the next 10 years. It will also deliver major action on climate change, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 23 million tonnes over the next decade. This conference comes on the day we are delivering an unprecedented investment in our state’s energy landscape and we look forward to you all being an active part of our transition to a fairer, cheaper and cleaner energy future. The first fuel for Australia's recovery There is really no way around it, 2020 has been an incredibly challenging year. Countries around the globe are still dealing with an unprecedented health emergency, while simultaneously trying to rebuild their economies. And although Australia is generally faring better on the health front, we are still facing the greatest economic crisis in decades. Our industry is not immune from these forces, and some businesses are facing serious difficulties. However, many households are waking up to energy efficiency, with record investment in some types of home upgrades. There is also an extraordinary consensus that governments should invest in energy efficiency to stimulate the economy - because energy efficiency delivers both immediate stimulus and multiple long-term benefits, creating exactly the kind of jobs we need. And to their great credit, governments here in Australia are acting to unlock this opportunity. Over the past ten years, the National Energy Efficiency Conference has built an outstanding reputation as Australia’s flagship event for energy management, energy efficiency and demand response. This Conference will be different in format, but not in impact. Luke, Rob and the team have brought all their expertise and attention to bear on the task. This effort - and an innovative virtual conference platform - will make for an fantastic experience for attendees, speakers and exhibitors. And I’m sure you’ll agree the program of local and international speakers and experts that we have the privilege of hear from this year is truly exceptional. Over the next three days we have the opportunity to flesh out the role that energy efficiency, energy management and demand response in the economic recovery and the energy transition taking place in every part of the economy. But just as importantly, it is an opportunity to come together as an industry and a network to connect, reflect and chart a positive course out of this crisis.
