A Letter from the Editor

It’s February, the month where we celebrate Valentine’s day and love in general. When it comes to how I celebrate Valentine’s day I feel as though I have always taken one of two approaches. If I was in a relationship, I was immediately hung up on the idea of spending time with my partner. I was looking forward to seeing what kind of effort they were going to put in to show me love. It didn’t mean I needed a grand gesture, but I was always looking forward to them expressing how much they care in whatever way they chose to do it. If I wasn’t in a relationship the focus became my girlfriends. We would celebrate being single and really embrace the idea that we didn’t need a relationship because we had each other. We would get dressed up and go out for dinner or go on cute coffee dates and buy each other flowers and chocolates and little stuffed toys. It was a real girl power moment. However, fast forward a bit to my more recent years, I had to experience the day while I was not in a romantic relationship and without my friends because they were. Talking smack about how the holiday was silly, was no longer something I wanted to partake in because I was watching them enjoy the experience with their partners and didn’t want to be a downer on all the love they were experiencing.

I’ll admit, I did spend a couple years trying out the wallowing thing. Moping about and feeling sad that I didn’t have a partner or friends to share the day with but it’s probably no surprise to you that I wasn’t having any fun. It was at that point that I had to do a little digging to figure out why I was feeling that way. In the end it became pretty clear that I was disappointed that I wasn’t doing anything special while everyone else was. I was upset because on a day that everyone seemed so joyful and loved, I didn’t have anyone to experience joy with. That was when I realized I needed to make a shift. My goal on Valentine’s day became to show myself some love. I guess you could say I took myself out on a date, doing things that made me happy. I bought my favourite food and some flowers, went to get my nails done, and crawled into bed to watch romcoms. I realized that I was looking forward to the day because it signified a time for me to do something fun and be treated with kindness and care.

All of this to ultimately say that no matter how you are spending the day, feeling loved is important. It doesn’t really matter what you do or who you do it with as long as you feel that you have been shown care, kindness and love.

Despite the feelings that arise from not being part of the “in crowd,” it's important to recognize that spending Valentine's Day alone doesn't have to be a negative experience. In fact, it can be a wonderful opportunity for self-love and appreciation.

We're experiencing a shift in societal norms, where being single on Valentine’s Day is embraced as a positive experience. It's becoming a day to celebrate the most important relationship you have - the one with yourself. This change in perspective is a breath of fresh air, allowing everyone, regardless of their relationship status, to feel included and celebrated on this day of love.

It's completely natural to feel a twinge of loneliness, especially on days like Valentine's Day, which are often painted with broad strokes of romance and togetherness. During these times, the world seems to be speaking a language of pairs, and it's easy to feel like the only one not participating in this celebration of love. But remember, feeling lonely is a common human 0 7

experience, one that touches each of us at different moments. It's not a sign of failure or a lack of worthiness for love; rather, it's a gentle

reminder of our need for connection and understanding, in whatever form that may take.

It might also be helpful to take a step back from social media, especially when it seems to amplify feelings of isolation or insecurity. Just remember that the stories portrayed on social media are usually very carefully curated highlights, not the full spectrum of real life relationships.

Above all else, remind yourself that being alone does not equate to being unloved or unlovable.

Your worth and your capacity to be loved are intrinsic, not defined by your relationship status.

In moments of solitude, there lies an opportunity to nurture love for oneself, which is the greatest love of all.
