How do you use your HMS Designer Pen? Here are some tips to make your creative journey seamless!

A Short Guide:

HMS Designer Pen works on all types of fabrics, especially “RING DYED” denim.

Try using your HMS Designer Pen on your favourite denim jeans and see what happens!

1. Lay down your fabric of choice on a flat surface.

2. Start scraping the fabric with the HMS Designer Pen in the shapes you want to create in a repetitive motion.

3. The more you scrape, and the level of strength you put in, the more the fade and contrast between your design and the background will be defined.

4. Use the HMS Designer Pen vertically like a conventional pen for drawing intricate patterns.

5. To make whiskers on your jeans, use the HMS Designer Pen horizontally, with horizontal movements.

6. To make surface abrasion, use the pen horizontally, with vertical movements.

7.You can also fold, ruffle or crumple your fabric and scrape the HMS Designer Pen over the top of the fabric as you hold it in place. Scrape until you get the desired intensity; a unique pattern will reveal itself when you unfold your creation.

8.Try taking a 3D object and place it under the fabric. Take the HMS Designer Pen and scrape it over the object horizontally. Ensure the fabric is stretched over to get maximum effect. (Use props or clamp the fabric to the table to help stretch the fabric. After several scrapes back and forth with the HMS Designer Pen, you will see a relief image of the object appear on the fabric.

9. Once you are happy with your design, you can wash your fabric!

Here are some washing tips: Washing your denim after using the HMS Designer Pen will bring out the highs and lows in your design.

a. Using detergent is okay.

b. If you want to resume work on your fabric with the HMS Designer Pen after washing it, do not add fabric softener to the washing machine.

c. If you would like to use fabric softener, only do so once you have completed the design process and customised the fabric with your design.

You will get the best results working on unwashed, coarse, raw and rigid denim.

If any stretch fibres are present in your fabric, stretch the fabric with your hands, clamp or use props to keep the fabric taut to the best of your ability before scraping the HMS Designer Pen.

Using the HMS Designer Pen on stretch fabric without manually stretching the fabric first may cause damage to the fabric (which, in some cases, may be intentional).

Try experimenting with the amount of pressure you apply to each scrape and try scraping large areas vs focusing on details to see what works best on the fabric and for your ideas to come to life.

Try scraping the HMS Designer Pen over raised areas on your jeans, such as belt loops, pocket openings, and anywhere natural wear

would occur for a more natural look.

Throughout use, some indigo or any dye present on the fabric you are working on will accumulate on the HMS Designer Pen. You can eliminate this by washing the pen or using pressurised air to remove the dye; the pen will be as good as new!

CAUTION: While the pen is not harmful to human health, using a mask and gloves is advisable as some may find it sharp, or some may have a dust allergy.
