Right before the pandemic, in November 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) published a report that came to the following conclusion: “…the overall evidence base shows a robust impact of the arts on both mental and physical health.”

During the pandemic, Audrey Azoulay Director-General of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) noted, “Bringing people together, inspiring, soothing and sharing: these are the powers of art, the importance of which has been made emphatically obvious during the COVID-19 pandemic.” Furthermore, she stated, “…art brings us closer together than ever before.”

Jennifer D. Dobbs Coming out of the pandemic, Amy Gilman, Director of the Chazen Museum of Art at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, encouraged, “Right now, art, artmaking, and creativity in all its forms are more important than ever…And it is what will nourish us as we adjust to the new normal of a post-COVID-19 world.”

The above statements confirm what we know – the power of the arts! From increased academic achievement and enhanced test scores, social skills, critical thinking, and problem solving, to giving students a chance to explore their talents and abilities, to providing discipline and an environment that breaks down social and cultural barriers, the arts have become a vital conduit – for mental health and for education - as well as a creative outlet.

My beloved Georgia students - YOU MADE IT!!! The arts served as your own vital conduit to aid in your success despite adversity. You and your indomitable spirit stood up and towered over your circumstances. I AM SO PROUD OF YOU – EACH AND EVERY ONE! All I want you to do tonight is celebrate every aspect of your extraordinary selves – your courage, perseverance, strength, optimism, intelligence, beauty, talent, and so much more. And to those who have supported them in various ways, with donation and support of your time, talent, and treasure – THANK YOU! GEORGIA - WE ARE BACK IN THE THEATRE, TOGETHER AGAIN!!!

IN MEMORIAM On February 6, 2022, ArtsBridge Foundation, the City of Atlanta, and numerous communities near and far, lost a beloved person in Larry M. Dingle, Esq. Larry Dingle served the city of Atlanta as a police officer and City Council Clerk under its first Black mayors, Maynard Jackson and Andrew Young.

According to his HistoryMakers biography housed in the Library of Congress, Larry was I’m just a “an agent of change’’ in his hometown of Dillon, farm boy South Carolina, where from South he was in the first class Carolina. to desegregate the local high school.

Larry M. Dingle, Esq.

Larry left Dillon to attend Morehouse College for his undergraduate degree and transferred to Georgia State University, where he was awarded his BA degree in 1974 followed by a JD law degree in 1987.

While working his way through school, he became a police officer in 1969 for the City of Atlanta and was a member of the Crime Analysis Team. He then served as Clerk of Council for the Atlanta City Council from 1977 until 1990, establishing the legislative record-keeping and operational processes that remain in use today.

Larry was an excellent and well-respected lawyer and a partner at Wilson, Brock & Irby, LLC for over 25 years and was a leader in the practice areas of zoning and land use, land use litigation, and local government law. He oversaw numerous prominent projects and clients and had an uncanny ability to build consensus across diverse communities, bringing even fierce opponents into amicable agreement. His ingenuity in negotiating roadblocks salvaged resolution from seemingly intractable standoffs.

Beyond the legal profession, Larry served as a member of many Boards, including Synovus Bank, Scicom Infrastructure Services, Inc., and ArtsBridge Foundation. He was a brother of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, an avid golfer and hunter, and a sought-after and deeply appreciated mentor to many.

Along with his loving wife of 35 years, Katherine Dingle; sons, Rodrick and Joseph; daughters Joice and Tiffany; grandchildren; great-grandchildren, family, and dear friends, ArtsBridge Foundation mourns his loss, but is ever grateful for the personal and professional contributions he made to our organization to the benefit of hundreds of thousands of Georgia’s K-12 students.

Larry was many things to many people, organizations, and communities.

Not bad for a farm boy from South Carolina.
