4 | betweenus Context is everything. As I write this, I am a week into rehearsing the show you’re about to see. Which means I’m spending a bunch of glorious hours each and every day with singers, writers, actors, composers – people for whom the exquisite gift of some time on this earth required the amplification their own gifts might offer. “I get to fall in love? In gratitude, here’s my love song.” “I get to test myself in adversity? In gratitude, here’s my adventure story.” “I get to walk this beautiful earth for some decades? In gratitude, here’s my vulnerability, offered in service of a reminder to pay attention.” We went to another place for 18 months. A place of forced reflection on what we value, what we can live without, and what we need to not just survive, but to thrive. And while we still have a solid foot in the weirdness, we are starting to step back into life as we not so much knew it, but as we imagined it. I have never been more grateful for the presence, company, and North-Star-providing of artists. They are showing us a way back. They are reminding us of both our better angels and our pitfalls. And as we open ourselves to a kind of unexpected do over, they are offering us a kind of GPS on the way to being fully human. Oh golly, I am so grateful to be with you all. Susan V. If

there’s one thing this pandemic has given us more of, it’s time. Time to slow down and feel bored. Time to watch a full series of a silly show. Time to be alone. And in the process of writing Darlin’ Cory, the creative team found unexpected doors opening as they were obligated to create in slow motion. “There was more thinking time for me,” says librettist Phillip DePoy. “I had a lot more time to just ponder all by myself than you would if you’re in the rehearsal hall. [Normally when] we’re right across the table from each other, things are happening a lot faster and a lot more immediately. But having that much thinking time, I think, actually did something unusual to this entire process. Don’t you Kristian?” Composer Kristian Bush replies, “Yeah, I would agree with you completely! There was a time before the internet that I completely recall when I could walk around singing things to myself over and over again. I even remember writing long letters, and that’s what this feels like. It feels very slow without being methodical.”

Almost Dreamlike Without having each other right across the table for immediate and overlapping collaboration, the creative process morphed into a series of waves from one creator to another. Bush says it felt almost dreamlike. “Very early on, we had a different story in mind, but the same universe,” Bush says. His process included continually tweaking version after version of the songs, sending them to the Darlin’ Cory creative team for their feedback. Eventually, there could be twenty versions of a song before the team landed on the one that fit the best.

“The songs that were written then, some of them became tentpoles, and I stopped changing them, and they just sat there. And because we’re doing nothing and we’re alone, it’s the one thing you can go back and listen to and re-imagine the world around. So, Phillip did this weird thing where he took a song that was meant for something else and kept reinventing it by what he put around it. It was super cool.”

DePoy, Bush, director Susan V. Booth, and the rest of the Alliance’s creative team worked in sync together despite being separated, fostering an environment that combined everyone’s strengths and ideas. Ultimately, this allowed the concepts to percolate while Darlin’ Cory was being workshopped and Wait a second. I developed into the finished piece it is don’t think that’s today.

dialogue. I think that’s a song lyric.’ So he would take that and turn it magically into song lyrics.

“I mean, it’s, it’s really true,” DePoy adds. “I would write something in the privacy of my own, you know, cramped little office, send it to Kristian, and he would go, ‘Wait a second. I don’t think that’s dialogue. I think that’s a song lyric.’ So he would take that and turn it magically into song lyrics. It obviated maybe a third of the scene and

made it better, you know? So, the scene builds up to the song. The song reveals the content of what had been the scene, and it moves it along so much better and so much more interestingly.”

The King of Driving the Plot The team kept centering their creative process around this idea that the plot drives everything. Every song was written with a plot-advancing purpose in mind. “Phillip is the king of driving the plot, right?” Bush explains. “He is! That’s what he does! I’ve only known him for a very short time, and I would trust him with that 1000 percent because his compass always knows which way to go with that kind of stuff.” As the writers have followed the story and let it dictate where the music goes, they have stumbled upon quite a unique treasure.

We were creating an almost mythic environment in which the songs and the action could happen.

“I would say you could probably categorize this as a new kind of musical too,” says DePoy, “because the book isn’t as much a typical musical book as it is a script that has been infused with musical identity. It’s a much more complex script and much more complex songs than I think you would get certainly in a typical Broadway musical.” DePoy likens their concept to Broadway’s Hadestown, a stylistic retelling of Greek Mythology. “That was a good thing for us to think about early on that we were creating an almost mythic environment in which the songs and the action could happen.”

Binge-Worthy Bush says part of his vision was to cater to audiences who binge-watch TV shows. “We are alive at this time and culture that we all have vocabulary about. We don’t watch one or two episodes of something,” he relates. “We want four seasons of a show, like, right now. You don’t want a story that’s an hour and a half long right now. You want a story that’s seven months long, right? And Phillip’s constantly found a way to put six years’ worth of episodes of a Netflix show into one story.” The team has landed on a show that feels binge-worthy and unforgettable. “And it’s dense! It’s also like a really good dessert,” Bush jokes. “You know what I mean? It kind of smacks you around a little bit. You will never freaking forget it. And there’s salt on top.”

MANY SOUNDS, ONE VOICE STORY BY

Abrianna Belvedere

A

front porch is more than just an entrance to one’s home. It’s often a gathering place where elders share stories, young people court, and neighbors join together as a community. In Appalachian history, the front porch also served as a musical workshop. Musicians and families would gather on the front porch of their homes, transforming it into a stage, just as our stage has transformed for music on the front porches of a cabin and public stoops outside of the general store. Through these makeshift performances, communities shared music, techniques, and traditions. Appalachian music was a product of the constant collaboration and change from these gatherings, each musician mining whatever styles and forms were suitable for new adaptations of raw material. Appalachian music and culture developed through the act of sharing and synthesis, becoming a musical scrapbook of the styles and genres of the many ethnic and cultural traditions of the Appalachian region. Over time, Appalachian music has borrowed and adapted elements from a variety of musical traditions, including jazz, blues, bluegrass, honky-tonk, country, gospel, and pop. Even the instruments common in Appalachia came from a variety of places. The fiddle was brought by Anglo-Celtic colonists, and

German immigrants brought instruments like the harmonica, Appalachian dulcimer, and autoharp. The banjo, one of the oldest instruments used in traditional Appalachian music, was derived from African instruments as a result of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, and Black musicians in Appalachia can be credited for much of the source and style of traditional folk songs from the region. Still today, Appalachian musicians experiment with a variety of sounds, making an effort to preserve the mountain music and grow on the tradition of collaboration and communal music-making. The collaborative nature of Appalachian music is a direct reflection of the importance of community in Appalachian towns. Though Appalachian culture is one that respects self-sufficiency and independence, it also is one that understands the importance of showing up for our neighbors when they need a helping hand. Through music, people were able to build strong relationships and understand their responsibility to learn

from one another. This resulted in a rich, diverse culture guided by a variety of artistic traditions — and more importantly, a culture that didn’t allow anyone to stand alone against their struggles. Appalachian music tells the stories of grief, faith, hardship, and resilience that run through the veins of Appalachian culture, built from the traditions of generations of people who were willing to listen, adapt, and lend a hand to a neighbor in need. From the strings of the banjo to the vibration of the harmonica, Appalachian music is a cultural harmony written by the people who made their way up the mountains, and created by feet planted firmly in tradition, yet with minds willing to change.

WOMEN AND MOONSHINE STORY BY

Raiyon Hunter

W

hen you consider cultural traditions you’ve been exposed to growing up, such as jumping the broom, building Ofrendas, crafting paper cranes, or even making and then drinking mulled wine around a decorated Christmas tree, do you think about the trailblazers who started them? We all have frequent and seasonal practices and customs that are directly or indirectly passed down to us by our ancestors. Living in 1930s Appalachia, our protagonist Clara inherited the tradition These trailblazing of making strong moonshine from her Mama. In Appalachian culture, women created a moonshine-making is one of the many traditions still practiced today. In the n ew t r a d i t i o n t o 1920s, following Prohibition, the sale of moonshine soared due to alcohol being b e p a ss e d d ow n , outlawed. Surprisingly, the majority of moonshiners during this time and a means for were women as they had significant their survival. advantages over moonshining men due to laws that prevented police officers from searching women. Some men even hired women to ride in cars with them as they delivered the goods because officers wouldn’t stop a car with a woman in it. Additionally, most juries did not convict moonshining women because they believed women to be incapable of committing such a crime. Because these women were

alliancetheatre.org | @alliancetheatre

encoreatlanta.com

underestimated, they could conveniently make up the majority of moonshine operators, at one point even outnumbering men moonshiners five to one. For centuries, women have had to come up with innovative and creative ways to provide for their families. The same ideals that created laws prohibiting women from working allowed women such as Maggie Bailey, Josephine Doody, Mary Wazeniak, and Mary Josephine Doody from Glacier National Park Collection Ann Moriarity to use their societal positioning to inconspicuously run their moonshine operations out of their own homes, therefore making money for their families and others. Maggie Bailey, also known as “Queen of the Mountain Bootleggers,” started selling moonshine as a young teen and used the money made to help people in her community. She put many kids through college and bought groceries for families who had fallen on hard times. Maggie was a hometown hero in Clover Town of Harlan County, Kentucky, and a household name. Hiding moonshine in laundry baskets and chicken coops, these trailblazing women created a new tradition to be passed down, and a means for their survival. When we stop and consider the way women had to fight for their right to earn money and respect, we realize the irony in so many of our cultural norms sitting on the shoulders of these change-making women. Moonshining women are now ingrained in Appalachian culture, and in the world of Darlin’ Cory, Clara stands on the shoulders of the many moonshining women who came before her.

28 | yourstoryyourstage Twelve months ago, when I came to Literacy Action as its new Executive Director, I met the staff, students, and volunteers via Zoom. I did not carry a box filled with framed family photos and a potted plant to make my new office feel like home. I also could not slip into the back of a classroom to watch Literacy Action teachers animatedly inspiring a group of adult students working toward their GED or perhaps working toward a dream of reading to a grandchild for the first time. But while the COVID-19 health crisis meant I didn’t have the first day I imagined when I accepted the position, the stark disparities in our community that by Sandeep Gill it exposed – in our healthcare system, our education Executive Director, Literacy Action system, our policing and our attitudes toward race — served as a constant and vivid reminder of why I took the job in the first place. For the adults we work with, a vaccine will not eradicate these disparities nor will it bridge the gap between talent and opportunity. Low literate adults are more likely to live in poverty, to be incarcerated, to be dependent on government assistance, and to have children who read well below grade level. In turn, their children become low literate adults and the intergenerational cycle of poverty persists, often despite the good intentions of parents, students and educators. Like the women in the play who are trapped in abusive relationships and tethered to small town life because they are denied an education, many modern day Atlantans are trapped in poor paying jobs and tethered to poverty because they lack basic reading and writing skills. The women in this beautifully written play ultimately get the chance to escape the shackles of illiteracy thanks to their strong wills and, of course, a dash of magic on the part of the Crow siblings. Many of our students also face multiple barriers to independence and success and need more than just motivation to transform their lives. This is where Literacy Action steps in: we offer undereducated adults tuition—free classes in adult basic education, ESL, Digital literacy and GED preparation, equipping them with a broad array of tools to reach their highest potential. In Darlin’ Cory, it takes a village — the nurturing of Mama Grace, the well-meaning deception of the Crow siblings, the bravery and ambition of Clara and Honor and the courage of Mr. Tucker to get books into the hands of the women in Blue Mountain, Georgia. In modern day Atlanta, it still takes a village. You can be part of our Literacy Action village by becoming a volunteer or donor. To learn more about our mission, our students and our events, visit www.literacyaction. org or follow us on Twitter @LAIAtlanta or Instagram @literacy_Action.

SYNOPSIS In 1932, a tiny town tucked away in the Appalachian Mountains has no road in — and no road out. This community, a long journey from the nearest town, Lake Hazard, carries secrets. A young woman collides with a pastor deeply committed to preserving the status quo and cracks begin to form in the town’s well-constructed facade. A stranger appears with the best moonshine anyone’s ever tasted, and the secrets of the town threaten to spill.
