Welcome back!

Take a moment to look around you and savor this moment.

You’re back in the beautiful & iconic Fox Theatre for the first time in many months. The lights are back on, the orchestra will soon be tuning up, and you’re about to experience the greatest Broadway musical of the past decade. Breathe it in!

Does it remind you of seeing your first Broadway show? That feeling beforehand that something thrilling and special was about to happen? That singular sensation of being swept off in a whirlwind of music and dance to a world of excitement and magic? And afterward, can you remember that glow of realizing you had become a part of something that you just knew would last your whole life long?

For me, it was experiencing the power of theatre in the original production of Cats on my first trip to New York with my mother. It gave me an experience I will never forget—and left me with a carefully preserved program I have always treasured.

You don’t need to leave Atlanta to enjoy that transformative experience which begins as soon as the lights dim, the orchestra finishes warming up, and the stage comes to life. This month the Fox Theatre brings you Hamilton, the kind of transformative show that comes along only once in a generation, like Fiddler on the Roof, A Chorus Line or Rent. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical dramatizes the founding of America by a band of idealists and revolutionaries whose dream was made real by the genius of that “ten-dollar founding father without a father,” Alexander Hamilton. The story is sung with a very contemporary gumbo of showtunes, rock and rap, and performed by a non-traditional cast of actors who conjure up an all-American musical about all Americans.

So, if this is your first Broadway-style show, welcome to the theatre, to the magic, to the fun! If this is your tenth, or twentieth or hundredth show, hold onto your seats. You’re in for the kind of magic carpet ride that only a Broadway musical—“the two most glorious words in the English language”—can give you.

We’re glad you’re here.

energy of the stage.

A HAMILTON HISTORY LESSON FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE MUSEUM OF AMERICAN FINANCE

As the president of the Museum of American Finance, David Cowen is an expert on the American Financial system. The same financial system created by Alexander Hamilton. A portrait of Hamilton hangs above the desk in David’s office. Author Jessica Steans-Gail caught up with David to discuss what exactly some of the lyrics mean and which traces of Hamilton’s financial legacy still exist today. Here is a brief history lesson from David Cowen.

The entire financial system is [Hamilton’s] legacy! He set up the system that we live under. Finance is the horse to the economy’s cart and, not only did it not exist when he came here, but we had all the leftover debt and problems from the revolutionary war; he inherited a very messy situation. He comes into office September 11, 1789 and he leaves at the end of January in 1795. He achieved a lot during those six short years in office. His greatest legacy is what he accomplished as our nation’s first Treasury Secretary.

Before he gets into office, our [nation] is effectively bankrupt. There is all this leftover debt that the

Continental Congress raised during the war. Coupled with [that] domestic debt, there’s also state debts; some states were paying the debt off, some were not. Then, there’s also international debt. We had borrowed money from the French who were helping us both militarily and economically.

Hamilton said, we should honor all of that debt. Why is that amazing? It gives us great credit. We honor the debt, and people now are willing to loan to us. So, in a dozen years when we go to Napoleon and say we want to buy New Orleans, we go to the premier bankers of the day in London, we borrow the money to pay Napoleon, and double the size of our country because we have good credit.

[or any other state]. We weren’t really unified as a country, so the Virginians were blocking [Hamilton’s plan]. So then, in my opinion, in the most famous trade in American history, in “the room where it happens,” is that meeting between Jefferson and Madison and Hamilton whereby they trade the capital. There are stories that Jefferson said, “I’m never trading with Hamilton again because I got hoodwinked into this.”

4.

Hamilton establishes a quasi-central bank. It was called The Bank of the United States, and it had branches. It was 80% private money and 20% government money. How was Hamilton going to pay a judge in South Carolina? Well, he has a branch of the bank there so instead of having to send the

money by horse, he can just make a book entry to pay that judge. It makes the ease and process so much better. It’s also where people put their money in, and it can be lent out. This was created by him and passed by Congress and is the only national bank. By the time he leaves office in ’95, there is a bank that has 5 branches.

When Hamilton takes office, we’re using foreign currency. Hamilton decides we’re going to have our own [national currency]. We’re not going to rely on foreign currencies (which do stay in circulation for years), but we’re going to set our own US dollar and have our own currency.

A CONVERSATION WITH JEREMY MCCARTER, AUTHOR OF HAMILTON: THE REVOLUTION

Jeremy McCarter knows a lot about Hamilton. As he jokes, he “literally wrote the book on it.” Jeremy was there from the beginning of the writing process to opening night on Broadway, and co-authored Hamilton: The Revolution with Lin-Manuel Miranda. Author Jessica Steans-Gail met Jeremy for coffee to talk his involvement with the show, Hamilton: The Revolution, and what he’s up to now.

Jessica: When and how did you first meet Lin-Manuel Miranda?

Jeremy: I met Lin when I was still writing for New York Magazine. I had been writing about theatre for a while and kept making the point that I thought musical theatre was really missing an opportunity because hip-hop is an incredibly powerful way of telling stories. The publicist for In The Heights fixed us up, [and] we met one night for a drink after the

show. In that first conversation, he told me that he was reading this book by Ron Chernow about Alexander Hamilton and wanted to make a hip-hop mixtape about Alexander Hamilton’s life, which, of course, I thought was completely insane.

Jessica: How did you first get involved with Hamilton?

Jeremy: I first heard Hamilton in the summer of 2011 when I was on the artistic staff of the Public Theatre. Part of my job was to propose artists and bring in projects that the Public might want to develop. The first artist I proposed to my boss was Lin. When Lin came in for that first meeting, he gave me a CD with demos of the first eight or nine Hamilton songs.

Jessica: When and how did you and Lin decide to write Hamilton: The Revolution?

Jeremy: At the opening night party at the Public, in February of 2015, Lin came up to me and said, “there’s going to be a book about the show and you should write it.” I don’t know when exactly he started thinking about it, but that’s the night that he and I started talking about it. We got down to work shortly after that.

Jessica: What did that process look like?

Jeremy: Lin and I had six months to do all the writing. I wrote the chapters and the headlines. He wrote the annotations to his songs. The best part of those six months was getting to spend more

time with the actors. I had already gotten to know them, but to have the chance to sit down with them and ask more specific questions about their lives, their careers, and their experiences of the show was a real delight. I had already spent a lot of time around the show not realizing that I was doing research. I was lucky that, for a lot of what’s in the book, I could draw on my own memories. [For example,] the account of Renée Elise Goldsberry’s audition; I was there. I walked into the room as she was walking out, and what I saw was a room full of people, mouths agape because they had just seen something amazing.

Jessica: The book flows organically between your essays and the lyrics of the show as annotated by Lin. Was that always how you intended to structure the book?

Jeremy: I thought about the first rule of writing as handed down by Stephen Sondheim, which is that content dictates form. What’s the story that this book is trying to tell? I thought, Hamilton tells the story of a revolution and Hamilton itself is a revolution. It’s a revolution in the way we think about the founding, about how Broadway sounds, [and] it’s certainly a revolution in the lives of my friends who worked on the production. So I thought it would be powerful to find a way to make those two revolutions follow the same narrative arc.

Jessica: What readers did you have in mind when working on Hamilton: The Revolution?

Jeremy: I always wanted the book to do different things for different readers. It needed to satisfy the people who had an expectation that they

were going to learn a lot about the show and its creation. I also wanted to put things in there that would be helpful to the people who are going to perform the show for themselves in a few years. There are things in there like the conversation I had with Lin and Renée about what they’re doing up there when they’re performing the relationship between Angelica and Alexander. I thought, “if I were nineteen years old and trying to figure out how to play this, what would I want to know?” and those were the questions I asked. The last [thing] that was on my mind was that forty years from now, when people are trying to figure out what it felt like to be inside the Hamilton phenomenon from 2008 to 2015, to try to make that vivid so they could understand.

Jessica: Are there any stories that you weren’t able to include in the book?

Jeremy: We had to finish it and send it off in December of 2015. It meant that there was no way to include the company’s trip to the White House in 2016 when, to me, a lot of the themes that are in the show were vividly on display. To me, one of the unforgettable sights of everything I got to see around Hamilton, was watching Chris Jackson perform ‘One Last Time,’ singing the actual words of George Washington, in The White House, in front of the iconic portrait of George Washington, six feet away from former President Barack Obama. It felt like all of American history is here, and I don’t even have to turn my head to see it.

Jessica: What are you working on, currently?

Jeremy: One reason I loved working at the Public Theatre is that it stands for the idea that artists have a role to play in society. They help us understand what’s going on, they change the way we feel, [and by] changing the way we feel, they change the world. Now that I’m in Chicago, I started a new, independent nonprofit production company called Make-Believe Association. Before I got to see Hamilton happen up close, I used to think that art could change the world. After Hamilton, I know that it can. I got to watch it happen again and again. It’s very exciting that the first performance that we did was a free, staged reading of Thornton Wilder’s beautiful play The Long Christmas Dinner, and Miguel Cervantes, who played Alexander here in Chicago, was in the cast! I’m very grateful to him for taking a night away from his own family to help us tell this story about all families.

etiquette

1 Please arrive early. Latecomers may not be seated until intermission.

2. Take care of personal needs (water, restroom use) before the performance begins.

3 Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cellphones, beepers and watch alarms. We encourage you to share your experience via social media but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances. The glow from your device is distracting.

4 Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theater is never allowed. It distracts those around you and endangers the performers.

5 The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point.

6 Dear lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of those behind you. Please consider those seated behind you when choosing whether to wear a hat or what hairstyle you choose.

7 Please refrain from talking, humming or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artists or show.

8 Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag.

9 Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic.

10. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed, the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you

11 Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. Please wait until the bows are over and exit with the rest of the audience.

FOX FUN FACTS

FOG-DELAYED STONES, BETTE MIDLER’S GHOST AND TURNING THE STAGE INTO AN ICE RINK

Atlanta’s Fox Theatre has played host to many world-renowned artists, from the Rolling Stones and Lynyrd Skynyrd, to Bette Midler and Widespread Panic. In July 1976, in fact, Lynyrd Skynyrd performed for three consecutive nights, recording the album One More From the Road and donating $5,000 toward the Save the Fox campaign. In February 1993, the band played another three nights, one of which was broadcast on pay-per-view television. Here are a few other rockin’ fun facts:

• The Rolling Stones have performed at the Fox twice, to date. In June 1978, the show was first billed as “the Cockroaches,” so as not to reveal too early the true identity of the performers.

• The Stones next appeared Oct. 26, 1981, playing for a standingroom-only crowd. As history has it, the bandmates traveled to Savannah for a day-trip and, due to dense fog in Atlanta, their return flight was rerouted to Macon. The show began 90 minutes late.

• Bette Midler was scheduled for a three-night gig in February 1983. According to longtime Atlanta concert promoter Alex Cooley

(who died in 2016), when she reached her dressing room she claimed that someone had died there, that it was haunted and she would not perform. The Divine Miss M was moved to another dressing room and, apparently content enough, agreed to go onstage.

• On New Year’s Day 2005, Broadway on Ice ice-skating pros Nancy Kerrigan and Rudy Galindo took to the stage, along with Broadway’s Leslie Uggams (a Tony Award winner for Hallelujah, Baby! ). Creating an impromptu ice rink was an overnight process that called for spraying the stage with water and quickly freezing it. Again and again and again.
