LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR “Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.” – Helen Keller (18801968) This past year has been quite difficult – in many ways, for many reasons, for many people. The COVID-19 pandemic put a halt to life as we know it. Our K-12 students suffered great loss: challenges of in-person socialization, basic human needs, social justice matters, interrupted academic studies, cancelled extracurricular activities, and much more. And yet, they persevered. J ennifer D. Dobbs
Students fought through challenges, whether learning academics in a new virtual manner, socializing via innovative technology, celebrating special events in unique ways, or practicing socially-distanced sports. Even more, somehow, our students still found the capacity to maintain involvement in the arts and put on stunning theatrical performances for this year’s Shuler Awards. How did they find the strength? Why did they continue their participation in the arts? Well, the education of our children is a vital part of their total development and holistic education. Extensive research and numerous studies have proven that exposure to the arts increases academic achievement and enhances test scores, social skills, critical thinking, and problem solving. The arts also provide discipline and an environment that breaks down social and cultural barriers while giving students a chance to explore their talents and abilities. Who wouldn’t want those type of benefits for our children? During a time like this, where people are sheltered-in-place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the arts have become a vital conduit - as a means of education, for creative outlet, and especially, for mental health. Why do we continue to do what we do? All you have to do is look to the hope, promise and resiliency of our students, and therein lies the answer. Join me in celebrating our students, for their resiliency in the face of suffering and in the overcoming of it, and most importantly – for their remarkable work! Thank you – each and every one of you – for supporting this program and the students whose lives are positively impacted by it! Warm Regards, Jennifer Jennifer D. Dobbs Executive Director ArtsBridge Foundation

DONOR SPOTLIGHT If you were to say that Helen and Jimmy Carlos are involved in the metro Atlanta community, you would vastly understate their participation and impact. Helen is an avid community volunteer and serves as a member of the ArtsBridge Foundation Board of Directors. Jimmy is Owner/VP of Risk Management for the family business, Republic National Distributing Company. They have been married nearly 44 years, have raised two daughters, and have served as a surrogate family to many. Their collective heart stirs their philanthropy, which impacts many Atlanta organizations. Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA), Marcus Autism Center, Atlanta Ronald McDonald House, Camp Twin Lakes, Sunshine on a Ranney Day, H elen & Jimmy Carlos Open Hand, Camp Sunshine, Thomas Chapman Cancer Wellness Center, Boys and Girls Club of Metro Atlanta and Devereux Georgia Treatment Center have all been recipients of their generosity. Nothing touches the Carloses more than support of children. Helen was a Special Education teacher for 10 years in the public school system and spent three years as a homebound teacher in an inpatient treatment facility. Their daughters, who are now grown, were involved in the arts, one in the theatre and the other in ballet. In addition to their general support of the annual Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards – Shuler Hensley Awards® program, Jimmy established an annual $5,000 The James Carlos Family Musical Theatre Performance Scholarship to assist the higher education of students pursuing the arts. On behalf of our Shuler students, and others served by your generosity, thank you. Shuler Hensley Awards® 2021 | ArtsBridgeGA.org | cobbenergycentre.com

TO EDUCATION SINCE INCEPTION Every time you play the Lottery, you’re helping our kids get one step closer to their dreams. For over 25 years, the Georgia Lottery has contributed more than $23 billion to education. On top of that, more than 1.9 million HOPE scholars have gone to college, and more than 1.6 million four-year-olds have attended a Lottery-funded Pre-K Program. That’s a lot of students, so we’ll just say “Thank You, Georgia!” for all of them.
Thank you, Georgia!
