6 | welcome Dear Friends of the Rialto,
I
am so thrilled to welcome you to the Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State University. Can you imagine what the Rialto has seen on this corner of Atlanta since
1916? As the new Director of this historic institution, I want you to join the conversation on how we reinvent ourselves. You can help us shape that future by participating in our surveys this spring. We are reimagining our vision, mission and values, which will inform our future programming and our efforts to reach out and become a brave voice in the community. Please enjoy the mastery of the artists this season! I will look forward to getting to know you. Best and warm regards,

JOHNNY MERCER TRIBUTE Featuring Joe Gransden and Tierney Sutton with the Georgia State University Jazz Band Friday, February 7 8 p.m.
Johnny Mercer’s name became a symbol for a standard of excellence in songwriting, as in: “Yeah, I’m a good songwriter, but I’m no Johnny Mercer.” Even the crème de la crème thought of Mercer in another league. When singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson was asked who he considered the greatest lyricist of all, his response was swift and unequivocal. “Johnny

Mercer,” he said. “Anyone who can rhyme ‘aurora borealis’ with ‘red and ruby chalice’ is not bad.” John Henderson (Johnny) Mercer was born Nov. 18, 1909, in Savannah, and became one of America’s first and foremost performing songwriters. His songs — from the lighthearted “You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby” to the romantic “Laura,” from the dramatic “Come Rain or Come Shine” and cinematic “Hooray for Hollywood” to the timeless “Moon River” — have been heard by millions of people worldwide on recordings, radio, films, TV programs and Broadway. Mercer’s lyrics were specific and one-ofa-kind, reflecting his Southern roots, his appreciation for nature, and his love of family. He portrayed the pastoral, sentimental South as opposed to the hustle and bustle of cities so often portrayed in popular song. Mercer wrote the lyrics to more than 1,400 tunes, plus another 100 for the movies. He won

His legacy includes 23 theatrical productions that feature his lyrics and/or music. There’s more. Mercer was a popular radio personality and recording artist. He cofounded and served as president of Capitol Records; nurtured such artists as Frank Sinatra, Nat “King” Cole, Margaret Whiting, Jo Stafford and Peggy Lee; and helped establish the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He died June 25, 1976, in Los Angeles, and is buried in Savannah’s historic Bonaventure Cemetery. The Johnny Mercer Collections, including his papers and memorabilia, are preserved in the Georgia State University library. This concert is made possible by generous support by The Johnny Mercer Foundation and the Georgia State University Library.

TERENCE BLANCHARD featuring the E-Collective
Saturday, Feb. 15 8 p.m.
Terence Blanchard is a 2018 USA Fellow and fivetime GRAMMY-winning trumpeter/composer who is a consistent artistic force making powerful musical statements concerning American tragedies past and present. Blanchard has interwoven melodies that created strong backdrops for Spike Lee’s films including the documentary When the Levees Broke, about Blanchard’s hometown of New Orleans during the devastation from Hurricane Katrina; the epic Malcolm X; Inside Man starring Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, and Jodie Foster; 25th Hour (Golden Globe Nominee) starring Edward Norton and Philip Seymour Hoffman; and Spike Lee’s latest, timely film, BlacKkKlansman, starring John David Washington, Adam Driver and Topher Grace. The New York Times said Blanchard delivered “a soaring, seething, luxuriant score,” to BlacKkKlansman featuring his current quintet E-Collective and a 75-piece orchestra. In Vice Magazine, Blanchard elaborates, “In

BlacKkKlansman, it all became real to me. You feel the level of intolerance that exists for people who ignore other people’s pain. Musically, I can’t ignore that. I can’t add to that intolerance. Instead, I have to help people heal from it.” Some of Blanchard’s other film credits include Black or White starring Kevin Costner and directed by Mike Binder; the Kasi Lemmons’ films, Talk to Me, starring Don Cheadle and Chwitel Ejifor, and Eve’s Bayou; George Lucas’ Red Tails; and Tim Story’s Barbershop. With his newest Blue Note jazz album Live, Blanchard addresses the staggering cyclical epidemic of gun violence in the United States. He delivers seven powerful songs recorded live in concert that both reflect the bitter frustration of the conscious masses while also providing a balm of emotional healing. With a title that carries a pointed double meaning, the album is an impassioned continuation of the band’s GRAMMYnominated 2015 studio recording, Breathless.

Presenting a thrilling, percussive dance and music spectacle, the company’s work celebrates the unique South American cowboy tradition of the gaucho. Concept, Choreography, Staging and Musical Composition by Gilles Brinas Lighting Concept and Design by Gilles Brinas Choreography developed in collaboration with the artists of Ché Malambo using their artistic input and individual techniques. Rhythm and Music Composition inspired by traditional Argentine folk music and performed by the artists of Ché Malambo. Artists of Ché Malambo: Federico Arrua, Fernando Castro, Francisco Ciares, Claudio Diaz, Miguel Flores, Federico Gareis, Walter Kochanowski, Facundo Lencina, Gabriel Lopez, Daniel Medina, Matias Rivas, Fernando Gimenez
Like many who fall under the spell of traditional dances, Gilles Brinas is fascinated and troubled by the Malambo. He flew to Buenos Aires in search of this dance so typical of the Pampa region of Argentina. Brinas was drawn to the particular rhythms, the haunting characters, and the lonely expressions of the gaucho who spends his life on horseback. The Malambo is filled with deeply personal solos reflecting this rich tradition. The talented artists he found in Buenos

Ché Malambo brings fiery Malambo traditions and virtuosic dancing to the contemporary stage for an exhilarating and entertaining show that is perfect for the entire family. Danced solely by men, the Malambo began in the 17th century as competitive duels that would challenge skills of agility, strength, and dexterity. Zapeteo, their fast paced footwork, is inspired by the rhythm of galloping horses in their native Argentina.
GILLES BRINAS A renowned dancer and choreographer, Gilles Brinas performed with many prestigious companies in Europe including: Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon (under the direction of Vittorio Biagi and Miklo Sparemblek), the Ballet of the twentieth century by Maurice Béjart at La Scala in Milan (choreographer Amedeo Amodio), the Grand Ballet de France, and in the company of Robert Hossein (choreographer George Skibine). He has also worked with Peter Goss, Anne Beranger, and Jean Golovin. In 1979, Brinas founded the DEA Ballet and won the prize of humor in the 11th Bagnolet competition. Then, in 1990 he was honored by the Charles Oulmont Foundation. In 2002, Brinas choreographed Bar Unión, a tango show with Sylvie Peron for Beinnale de la Danse. His teachers and mentors include Lucia Petrova, Raymond Franchetti, Andrej Glegolski, Solange Golovin, Serge Golovin, Karol Toth, Vittorio Biagi, Milko Sparemblek, and Peter Goss. Brinas has also practiced Aikido with Hirokatsu Kobayashi and André Cognard and has studied Noh with the living national treasure, Hideo Kanze.

She’s sung at Birdland, Smoke’s and, Mezzrow’s, and has sat in with some of the greats including New York pianist Johnny O’Neal with whom she recorded her first CD, Dragonfly; New York bassist Steve Doyle; and Teaneck, New Jersey guitarist Russell Malone. hen you donate to the Rialto, you enable us to further enhance and broaden our arts portfolio and educational programming; to maintain and expand the Rialto Series, featuring the best of national and international jazz, world music and dance; and to continue building our educational outreach to high-need public school students throughout Atlanta. With donor categories from $1 to more than $100,000, no amount is too small to contribute! We invite you to become part of the Rialto family, and with your gift, the Rialto will be able to bring the arts to more audiences, more classrooms and transform even more lives.
