OHIO THEATRE COLUMBUS, OHIO

Dear Broadway Patrons,

Is it safe to assume that you’re all excited about our 2025-26 Broadway in Columbus season? I hope you are because we here at CAPA and Broadway in Columbus are excited to bring so many great shows to Columbus.

Six Columbus premieres (and a beloved classic!) among our seven subscription-season shows. And though subscriptions are close to selling out, a few are still available for as little as $343. A subscription package is the best way to guarantee your seats for all of these fantastic Broadway shows.

Is it absolutely crazy that Columbus will be the first Ohio city – and, so far, the ONLY Ohio city – to host the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child tour? Sure it is! Almost as crazy as the revelation in the play that Harry – who still has a big part to play even though Cursed Child is about the next generation of Potters, Grangers and the rest – is afraid of pigeons.

Is it wild that The Outsiders, the 2024 Tony Award winning Best Musical, is on our upcoming season? Absolutely, but maybe not as wild as knowing that the show is directed by Danya Taymor, niece of Julie Taymor, who you probably know as the director of and mastermind behind the stage production of The Lion King.

Is it amazing that we have the sweet and silly Shucked coming to Columbus in April? Yes, but not as a-maize-ing as the bushels and bushels of corn-y puns (get it?) in the show’s script.

And are you blown away that we’ll be bringing The Sound of Music to the Ohio Theatre in February? Probably not as blown away as Julie Andrews was when filming the movie version’s iconic opening scene, as she kept getting knocked down in the mud by the gusts from the helicopter carrying the camera.

We look forward to seeing you next season and thanks, as always, for being a part of the Broadway magic here in Columbus!

BEHIND

THE SCENES OF DAVID KORINS’

NEW SCENIC-DESIGN EXHIBIT

What did the set of Hamilton almost look like? See exclusive sketches of Korins’ earliest ideas here and as part of the installation.

A Victorian doll house. Micro-sculptures out of a pencil’s graphite tip. Figurines tributing the famous Green Army Man. These are pieces of art you’ll find on display at the Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures in Tucson, Arizona. So when four-time Tony Award-nominated scenic designer David Korins received an email from the museum’s new director, asking Korins if he’d be interested in displaying his work there, he was a little surprised. Not because he doesn’t work in miniatures. He does. Quarter-inch, half-inch set models. While they are tools of the trade, they’re usually not the kind of art you’d see behind glass. “We use scale and exploration of it to work through designs,” Korins told Broadway News. “The difference is our stuff is not made to be museum quality. It is made as a tool to convey to creative teams and people what it’s going to be.” But the museum’s leadership wanted to change things up by featuring the designer. Korins agreed, but insisted on building an exhibit that emphasizes the process and collaborative nature of theatrical scenic design, rather than showcasing “his” final products. “No one owns an idea,” Korins urged. “You find your way in a community of collaborators. I felt like: There is no such thing as a set design by David Korins; there are hundreds of people coming together and making thousands of decisions.”

“Stages of Imagination: The Iconic Broadway Designs of David Korins” was a joint effort of Korins Studio and the museum. The exhibit, which opened on Sept. 20, takes up 1,600 square feet and includes insights about Korins’ processes for Broadway’s Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, Beetlejuice, Here Lies Love and the 2024 revival of The Who’s Tommy. “My hope was to choose five [shows] that felt prescient, but also different from each other,” Korins said. “So that you could see how the same challenge — how do you design a musical? — could give you five very different outputs.” Visitors have been able to look at everything from Korins’ scribbled ink drawings of overlapping squares (a precursor to the hanging tile screens of Dear Evan Hansen) to physical, full-size set pieces (the actual striped couch from Beetlejuice) in a cacophony of sketches, impulses, research, renderings, miniature models and final production photos.

But perhaps most unique are the captions and video commentaries from other members of those musicals’ creative teams. The writers of all five (Lin-Manuel Miranda; Benj Pasek and Justin Paul; Eddie Perfect, Scott Brown and Anthony King; Pete Townsend; David Byrne), as well as the directors and many performers offer quotes about “how we came up with the set or what their attachment to the set was,” Korins said. What’s more, visitors will hear from all of the laborers and designers from Korins’ studio: “people who built the model, did the renderings, did the drawings — and painters, people whose work wouldn’t normally be noticed, recognized or amplified.” Korins also used each of the five shows to emphasize a different step of designing. For the history-based Hamilton he highlights the research aspect; for Here Lies Love he showcases the build and theatre transformation phase.

Breaking down the steps that led to these designs, Korins retroactively investigated the choices that led to what audiences saw (or still see) on the Broadway stages of these musicals. As Korins noted, “These things feel inevitable when the audience sees it, and they’re so not inevitable.”

Taking in Korins’ designs as a collection, visitors will see some commonalities to his work. “I design scenery to be interacted with,”

Korins said. “I definitely contemplate how someone interacts with their environment and how that environment is changed by the people inside it.” This exhibit is no exception.

Korins is proud to have brought a slice of Broadway to Tucson, Arizona with “Stages of Imagination,” which will remain open through May 31, 2025. “You can move the needles so much in a small town like that,” he acknowledged. After Tucson, Korins intends to tour the full installation around the country and, maybe the world — be it the Smithsonian, the Donmar Warehouse or another less theatrically trafficked city. “My hope is that it not only travels, but that it collectively pulls back the curtain on how we come together and make stuff,” Korins said. “[It shows] disparate voices coming together to attack a problem and try and solve a problem that is incredibly hard, right? “We’re not meant to tackle [hard] things alone in life or in art,” Korins said. “I hope that people see all the people that weighed in, how many people affect these stories and then how many millions of people the shows can therefore affect. I’m excited about that message going out into the world.” Below, Korins offers a sample of what’s inside his exhibit. The designer has exclusively shared with Broadway News his earliest sketches of possible sets for Hamilton, the dramaturgy behind these ideas and the reasons why they were eventually abandoned for the design we see today.

The quill

“The parchment quill was never going to be a real idea. Although if you look closely, there is a catwalk around the back, which landed. There’s a nautical theme — that quill is a crow’s nest. [This design] was me saying, ‘If this was an installation art piece, there’s that,’” Korins said. “But what it led us to was a nautical [theme], to Hamilton writing voraciously, to that catwalk and brick. There are a lot of pieces that had traction.”

The pool

“Hamilton never got a monument, right? Washington, Jefferson, Madison, they all got monuments. And if you go to D.C., you’ll see almost all the monuments have water features. As we thought about the ending of the show, we wondered: Could we unearth water? Would there be value in Eliza and Alexander meeting in this otherworldly

place as they asked, ‘Who lives, who dies, who tells your One of Korins’ earliest conceptual drawings for the set of Hamilton story?’” Korins explained. The pool idea was actually built and revealed in the final moments of the first three performances of the Off-Broadway premiere at the Public Theater. “The problem was: The audience was not asking the question, “Who lives? Who dies? Who tells your story?” They were asking, “Is that real water? Was that there the whole time?” So it was cut.

The dirt

“The dirt was about: How do we show work getting done? And there was this four elements [theme]. In ‘Burn’ there was fire, there was water [with the pool], there was earth. It was a very elemental, much rougher landscape back then,” Korins recalled. But the communication of “work” was the main draw to dirt. “New York is the biggest city in the country at the time, and it’s growing. How do you show work? My idea was we actually are seeing them laying down floorboards [over the dirt], say, as the Schuyler sisters are walking.” Ultimately, the story of work reads through the back brick wall of the set, which grows higher as the show (and America) progresses.

The column

“The show is ultimately a metaphor of people who built the scaffolding from which the country was built,” Korins said. He began playing with visual representations of government. “One of the ideas was we would build this huge column, but there’d be scaffolding around it — as though people were reaching up and building it higher. That one was no good because you can’t stage your musical with a column in the middle. And the Capitol wasn’t built until a hundred years after Hamilton was alive. So that felt disingenuous.”
