On a breezy Sunday evening in March magic happened in Charlotte, North Carolina. Over fifteen hundred eager patrons lined the streets of uptown Charlotte, awaiting entrance into one of the largest stages operated by Blumenthal Performing Arts, the Belk Theater. Most of them were Black women and men, many were not. A host of racial and ethnic identities were represented. They were business professionals, community organizers, elected officials, students, seniors, couples and families. The majority were from Charlotte, with many traveling from other cities in North Carolina and neighboring states like South Carolina and Virginia. The furthest guests came from San Diego, California to experience a unique one-night-only production, designed to elevate and explore the stories and experiences of Black women in Charlotte. They were all there to see I Am Queen: Charlotte.
I Am Queen is the creative brainchild of the storytelling duo Hannah Hasan and Shardae Hasan, co-founders of Epoch Tribe. The two have gathered and written stories of everyday people, mostly Black people and those who exist within marginalized communities, and turned them into on-stage productions for over twelve years. These stories are the deeply personal and intimate experiences of real people who have agreed to have their experiences adapted for on-stage
performance. For I Am Queen: Charlotte, Hannah interviewed Black women from diverse backgrounds. Based on those interviews, she wrote a series of stories that come to life on stage through a talented cast of all Black women and Black girl actresses. An added addition to this groundbreaking production is the use of storytelling through the musical accompaniment and other artistic performances throughout the show.
The premise of I Am Queen: Charlotte is what makes it a standout in the current theatre and creative landscape. It is a contemporary show that documents the living legacy of Black women – their real-time journeys through love, loss, triumph, self- actualization, parenting, adapting to the professional world, navigating our current social and cultural climates and more – and shares those experiences in an intersection of monologue, dialogue, movement and music that defies a single genre. More than that, we’ve built a culture around the show that thrives on a shared Black experience. The conversations about the high demand for customdesigned outfits for the show and the women whose stories are shared onstage are as prevalent as the ongoing discussions about the visibility of Black stories crafted by and shared through a Black perspective and the satisfactions of feeling seen and represented on a theatre stage.
The show is developed with flexibility in mind - we’ve built a hybrid infrastructure into the end-to-end production process that allows the core production team and cast the ability to work on and rehearse the show regardless of location and with respect to evolving public health requirements. The script is totally original and owned by Epoch Tribe, which allows the creative freedom to make geo-specific adjustments to deepen the resonance of the stories to the communities the show touches. The set is minimal, and we capitalize on the use of lighting, signature set artwork, and sound to distinguish time, space and place. The musical score includes original compositions and arrangements that are also owned by Epoch Tribe.
We draw a core audience of Black women and men 25+, many of whom are newto-theatre or infrequent theatre goers. I Am Queen: Charlotte connects directly to those who haven’t traditionally felt compelled to participate in theatre because they feel disconnected to the stories on stage. One community member said this work is “...like looking through a yearbook celebrating us!” However, our show received widespread acclaim from the broader community as well. The themes explored in the show resonate with a broader audience who still feel connected to the realistic depictions of emotions and experiences that are a part of the universal human condition.
*Previously seen in Charlotte, the production has been recreated in Nashville.

TPAC strives to present welcoming and accessible experiences in the performing arts and arts education for everyone.
Accessible services include parking, elevators, wheelchair seating, use of a TPAC wheelchair, designated restrooms, and services for patrons with limited hearing and vision. Sensory Friendly kits and infrared assisted listening devices are available at no charge and may be picked up at the patron accessibility kiosk in the lobby. TPAC offers American Sign Language, Open Captioning, Audio Description, and Braille programs on the Sunday matinee in the HCA Healthcare / TriStar Health Broadway at TPAC Season, presented in partnership with Nissan. Large print programs are available for Broadway at TPAC shows. Special accessibility requests and concerns may be discussed in advance by emailing Access@TPAC.ORG.
Restrooms for Jackson Hall are located one level down from the 6th Avenue entrance, and on each level inside the theater. Restrooms for Polk Theater are located down the stairs to the left of the entrance to the orchestra level and on the tier level. Booster Seats are available on a first-come first served basis, please inquire with an usher upon entrance to the theater.
Bars and Concessions are located in the Orchestra and Tier level lobbies for most performances.
An ATM is on G-Level, near the security desk at the Deaderick Street entrance to the building.
All electronic devices including cell phones, watch alarms, cameras, and recorders should be turned off prior to the show.
To inquire about Lost and Found items, please email Lost@TPAC.ORG to report an item you might have left at TPAC.
Our guest services team seeks to respond to all patrons as quickly as possible. Please allow up to 48 hours to receive a response for all questions and concerns.
