songs told a vivid story of how people grow up and sometimes outgrow each other. When Joel joined forces with director/choreographer Twyla Tharp, they created something that defied categorization: Movin’ Out is not a jukebox musical in the vein of Mamma Mia!, nor is it a “dance play” like Susan Stroman’s Contact. It’s a deeply complex portrait of

five friends told exclusively through movement, putting the lyrics of familiar pop songs in a haunting new context. It’s also a highly demanding show, requiring dancers to rotate in and out of roles in order to give their bodies a rest. Ashlee Dupree alternates dancing the main women of the piece, Brenda and Judy. ballet choreography —Judy is on pointe in the show — but her choreography and dancing is from the soul. Everything has a meaning to it. Instead of just doing steps, you’re telling a story with your body.” When she’s playing Brenda, her favorite number to dance is “Shameless,” which comes near the end of the show. “It’s so beautiful because of the story within it: It’s about Brenda and Tony reconnecting [after many years apart],” she says. “As Judy, I love doing ‘Stranger’ because the dancing is really thrashy and out of my element. And it’s so fast, you literally have to be on your toes the whole time.” “Goodnight Saigon” is her favorite number to watch. “The lyrics make a lot of sense as to what’s going on now with this war,” she says. “It’s heartwrenching, and the men really get into it.” Audiences tend to connect very deeply with the characters’ emotional lives, Dupree says. And they always ask how they do the show every night, because of its extreme physicality. But there’s one thing Dupree wants the audience to understand: “We’re having just as much fun as they are.” Movin’ Out leaps onto the Fox stage May 1-3.

“Brenda is kind of the tomboy in the beginning, who’s very perky and secure, and Judy is the All-American sweetheart who loves her boyfriend James,” Dupree says. “Brenda and Eddie get divorced in the very beginning [during ‘Scenes from an Italian Restaurant’], and she begins this journey towards becoming a beautiful young woman.” Judy goes through losing the love of her life and learning how to move on. “It’s a hard show to get through every day, just getting off the bus,” Dupree says. “But once the music starts, it doesn’t matter if you’re sick or hurt, you just dance.” Part of the magic of the show is that the dancers are accompanied by a live band. “You can feel the energy radiating from the stage,” Dupree says. “The music just pumps you up, grounds you. It’s a phenomenal pleasure dancing with them and for them.” Dupree comes from a classical ballet background, so she loves being in a big Broadway show that doesn’t require her to sing and act, too. “I’m in my comfort zone,” she explains. “[The show’s choreography] is more grounded than ballet,” she adds. “It’s easier to dance when you’re more grounded. The Ten Tenors: Ten times as nice B

hat do you get when you cross 10 suave and dashing young men with smooth, operatic vocal styling? The platinum-selling, Australian-based Ten Tenors, of course. Famous for a unique blend of opera, pop and rock, the group brings their prowess to the Fox Theatre on May 20. The Atlanta stop is part of the multicontinent Nostalgica World Tour 2009. “Nostalgica is not only a songbook journey through the hits of the 20th century by the artists that made them great, but also a trek through The Ten Tenors’ decade-long history — a greatest hits tour with a twist,” stated Graham Foote, the show’s musical director.

The Ten Tenors consists of classically trained tenors, ages 23 to 33, many of whom have musical theater backgrounds. Credits range from principal to ensemble roles in such productions as Jesus Christ Superstar, Les Miserables, Sweeney Todd and My Fair Lady, among others. Their combination of artistry, charm and comedy has garnered them critical acclaim and wooed audiences all over the world. To date, they have sold out shows on four continents and performed for over 90 million people. They also have appeared on an ABC-TV “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” season finale, and performed alongside artists such as Rod Stewart,

Alanis Morissette, Andrea Boccelli and Christina Aguilera, to name a few. Previous recordings have topped European pop charts, and in 2003 they recorded the theme song “Jungle Rhythm” for Disney’s Jungle Book 2. Originally, when the group first formed in 1995 at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, it was informal and not quite what you’d deem a world-class musical sensation (an early goal was simply to earn an extra bit of beer money). Ironically, fans thought them to be nothing short of phenomenal, and their growing audience quickly shifted from being mainly corporate groups to music lovers throughout Australia. In 1998, they took their show on the road for the first time, playing mostly local cities. Their big break, however, came in 2002, when they were invited to perform at the German entry selection event for

the Eurovision Song Contest. Within hours of their appearance, tickets for all their upcoming shows sold out. Today, they are one of the most successful acts to ever tour Germany. Years (and several member changes) later, they’re still traveling the globe — about 10 months out of the year, playing around 250 shows on any given continent. Recently, they wrapped up a two-month long German engagement, during which they collected donations after shows as part of the Red Cross Relief Aid for the 2009 brushfires in Victoria and floods in Queensland, Australia. They launched the North American leg of the spring world tour in April. Additional tour stops will include cities throughout Europe, South Africa and Australia. plot synopsis ACT I Long Island in the ’60s. The king and queen of the prom, Brenda and Eddie, are finished, while forever sweethearts James and Judy are ready for marriage. Their friend, Tony, is looking for that kind of love, and he finds it with Brenda, who has become her own woman. War takes the men away from home, leaving their loved ones to pick up the pieces. James loses his life in combat, while Tony and Eddie return home broken as Judy grieves.

ACT II The vets try to cobble their lives back together. Tony can’t seem to find a way to reconnect with Brenda, while Eddie can’t connect with anyone. Spiraling into a lonely existence of drugs and self-loathing, Eddie takes a tour through a nightmare of his past, projecting Judy as his guide. By chance, he encounters Judy jogging in the park, and her forgiveness allows him to finally set his life back on track. Brenda and Tony rediscover the love needed to heal their wounds. The friends reunite to discover they have all found their way back home.

TWYLA THARP (Conception, Choreography, Direction) Since graduating from college in 1963, Twyla Tharp has choreographed more than one hundred thirty-five dances, five Hollywood movies, directed and choreographed three Broadway shows; written two books; and received one Tony Award, two Emmy Awards, nineteen honorary doctorates, the Vietnam Veterans of America President’s Award, the 2004 National Medal of the Arts, the Jerome Robbins Prize, The Kennedy Center Honors and many grants, including the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellowship. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and an Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 1965, Ms. Tharp founded her dance company, Twyla Tharp Dance. In addition to choreographing for her own company, she has choreographed for other companies, including: American Ballet Theatre, The Paris Opera Ballet, The Royal Ballet, New York City Ballet, The Boston Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance, The Martha Graham Dance Company, Miami City Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet. Ms. Tharp’s work first appeared on Broadway in 1980 with When We Were Very Young, followed in 1981 by her collaboration with David Byrne on The Catherine Wheel at the Winter Garden. Her 1985 production of Singin’ in the Rain played at the Gershwin and was followed by an extensive national tour. In 2002, Ms. Tharp’s award-winning dance musical Movin’ Out set to the music and lyrics of Billy Joel premiered at the Richard Rodgers and ran for three years. A National tour opened in 2004 and also ran for three years. In film, Ms. Tharp has collaborated with director Milos Forman on Hair in 1978, Ragtime in 1980, and Amadeus in 1984, with Taylor Hackford on White Nights in 1985, and with James Brooks on I’ll Do Anything in 1994. Her television credits include: choreographing Sue’s Leg for the inaugural episode of PBS’ Dance in America; co-producing and directing Making Television Dance, which won the Chicago International Film Festival Award; and directing The Catherine Wheel for BBC Television. Ms. Tharp co-directed the television special Baryshnikov By Tharp, which won two Emmy Awards, as well as, the Director’s Guild of America Award for Outstanding Director Achievement. In 1992, Ms. Tharp wrote her autobiography Push Comes To Shove. Her second book, The Creative Habit: Learn It And Use It For Life was published in October, 2003. f a show opens in a theater and a critic isn’t there to see it, will anyone care? The relationship of critic and theatrical artist is one fraught with ambivalence, pathos and an element of romance. In the old days (and maybe still in New York), a bad review could break a show and a good one could save it, or launch an actor to stardom. But how necessary is criticism to Atlanta’s theater scene? Artists prefer to believe they don’t need approval. They often will explain, “If you’re willing to believe the good reviews, then you have to believe the bad ones, too.” But that philosophy implies actors don’t need encouragement. Or attention. 26 Encore Atlanta

Theater producers are more direct about why they need critics. “It is important to be reviewed for the publicity it might generate,” says one local artistic associate. However, when a review isn’t published on a show’s opening weekend, it may not help. “If they come past the first week, why come?” she adds. “Why try to influence folks when [the run] is almost over?” It may be argued that Atlanta theaters are lucky to secure any press coverage at all. Newspapers are struggling to stay alive, laying off staff and combining sections. Gone are the days of papers filled with critical art, book, music, theater and dance reviews. Now, readers are more likely to find reviews sandwiched between celebrity news and comics or relegated to online blog posts.

The Sunday Paper’s theater critic Bert Osborne says the column space he has to work with is his biggest challenge. Regardless of whether he’s covering two or four shows, he still only has a halfcolumn to work with every week. “That often forces me to be more blunt than I might want to be,” he says. “It’s a tough call, but in the interest of (hopefully) gaining a broader overview of the Atlanta theater scene, I’d rather try seeing and covering as much as I can.” Theater critic Curt Holman is the only full-time arts and entertainment staffer Creative Loafing has left. “A year (or

GOLDEN RULES The following brief, but important article has been published to assist in audience etiquette. To this day we get at least one phone call a week asking for reprint rights. These calls and letters come from orchestras and theaters, opera and ballet companies all over the United States and Canada, big and little troupes alike. The message, telegraphed between the lines, seems to be an S.O.S.: American audiences are out of control. Are they? Here’s a refresher course. Please read on, and remember, part of one’s pact as an audience member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and selfcontained behavior. After all, you can be as demonstrative as you want during bows and curtain calls. 1. Go easy with the atomizer; many people are highly allergic to perfume and cologne. 2. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things. 3. Unwrap all candies and cough drops before the curtain goes up or the concert begins. 4. Make sure cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms are OFF. And don't jangle the bangles. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Note to lovebirds: When you lean your heads together, you block the view of the person behind you. Leaning forward also blocks the view. 7. THOU SHALT NOT TALK, or hum, or sing along, or beat time with a body part.
