n behalf of the Johns Creek Healthcare Association (JCHA), I welcome you to this year’s edition of our Healthcare Directory. JCHA was founded in 2006 with the goal of bringing physicians and allied health providers in the Johns Creek and Suwanee areas together. Our main objective is to provide highquality health care for all patients.

Since the last health-care directory, I have learned a great deal from the health-care association. I learned the importance of wellness, which was highlighted Feb. 19 during a Wellness and Healthcare Summit. Dr. Kat Igah-Phillips spoke about the importance of food and nutrition. She highlighted different portions of food and recommended variety in the colors of the vegetables we eat. Scott Morrison spoke about aging beautifully and the kinds of plans we should share with our loved ones in their older years. I spoke about the importance of regenerative medicine and the updates in PRP and stem-cell treatment. Dr. Ravi Singareddy spoke about sleep and mental illness in the high stress climate we live in. These are some of the highlights of the summit we held at St. Marlo Country Club.

Our next two programs address the constant change of health care in the state of Georgia. We also are compiling a list of Johns Creek Healthcare Association members who want to lecture at various venues and events, including area schools and nonprofit organizations. REGENERATIVE MEDICINE Harnessing the body’s power to heal itself

W

4 SOURCES The body has four potential sources of material: • Stem cells are unique cells that can become many types of cells. “Mesenchymal” stem cells from bone marrow can make bone, cartilage, fat and connective tissue and help form blood.

• Adipose tissue (body fat) can be harvested more easily and more often than bone marrow. Stem cells from adipose tissue have been shown to improve movement and reduce pain as well as easing osteoarthritis and healing damaged cartilage.

• Platelet-rich plasma is extracted from the patient’s own blood. Thirty to 60

hat if the best medicine to help you regain the structure and function of your damaged tissues and organs could come from your own body? It might sound like science fiction, but that’s the idea behind the experimental field of regenerative medicine.

Regenerative medicine uses body products such as stem cells, adipose tissue (body fat), platelet-rich plasma and amniotic tissue to cure injuries and diseases that were once thought to be untreatable.

Being able to help the body heal can relieve chronic pain and other conditions without relying on a long-term regimen of pain-relieving medicines, even opioids, which are now at the center of a national debate thanks to addiction, abuse and overdose deaths.

Regenerative medicine also has been used successfully in orthopedics and sports medicine clinical trials.

milliliters of blood yields 3 to 6 milliliters of plasma. Platelet-rich plasma is used most often to treat tendon injuries and diseases and osteoarthritis.

• Amniotic tissue is drawn from the amniotic membrane and fluid that surround a fetus during pregnancy and is retained at birth. Experiments show this tissue can treat some injuries and reduce infections, inflammation and scar tissue.

WHEN TO ASK ABOUT REGENERATIVE MEDICINE Any of these four conditions can make regenerative medicine a potential solution for you or a loved one: 1. More conservative treatments have failed.

2. The patient has lost work or sports-activity time because of the injury.

3. Surgery wouldn’t correct the injury.

4. The patient wants to try it.

WHEN A PHYSICIAN MIGHT RECOMMEND TREATMENT Orthopedic doctors are turning to regenerative medicine protocols for conditions such as these: 1. Mild to moderate osteoarthritis in the knee.

2. Meniscus disease in the knee.

3. Chronic tendon damage.

4. Partial-thickness tendon and ligament tears.

LIMITATIONS Although regenerative medicine using the body’s own products holds promise for many conditions, there are times when you might not qualify for it. These include: 1. You have cancer or an infection.

2. You have diabetes, thyroid or pituitary gland diseases or any other problems with your endocrine system, which regulates body functions.

3. Y ou have had strokes or have epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease or other issues involving the brain or spinal cord.

4. Your diagnosis is not clear-cut.

Regenerative medicine also has some general drawbacks. These include: • FDA regulations, which can limit the use of certain tissues.

• T he field is still considered experimental, with most treatments done in clinical trials. Because of this, insurance usually doesn’t cover it.

WRAPPING UP Despite the drawbacks and limitations that are part of regenerative medicine, physicians specializing in pain management and orthopedics see enough evidence to support continued research and experimentation, especially if it can provide an alternative to relying on painkillers to relieve chronic pain.

NUTRITION H

ealthful eating is more than counting calories, skipping bread or dessert, avoiding fat or cutting out sugar. How you eat is as much a key to nutrition success as what you eat.

That’s the idea behind “mindful eating” — taking a psychological or emotional approach to eating that asks you to slow down, think about the food you’re putting in your mouth and enjoy it instead of scarfing on autopilot.

NOTHING FANCY HERE

BEGIN WITH THESE 5 STEPS Mindful eating asks you to take a slower, more thoughtful approach to food. Instead of restricting your food choices, it teaches you to listen and respond intuitively to internal cues from your appetite-regulating system.

The five steps below might take some time to incorporate into your routine, but once mindful eating becomes a habit, you’ll find it easier to practice no matter where you are:

Mindful eating is not a fancy new name for dieting. It doesn’t give you a diet plan with rules that are hard to follow or based on “junk” science or misunderstandings about nutrition and health.

Conventional diets often restrict what you eat in ways that range from impractical to downright unhealthful. They often classify foods as good or bad and regulate how much and when to eat.

Plus, restrictive diets don’t travel well. You might be able to follow a strict diet at home but not when you’re dining at a restaurant or someone else’s house.

Tired of dieting?

Try eating mindfully instead.

• Create a pleasant dining atmosphere. You don’t have to light candles or play soft music but clearing a place on your dining-room table is a good start.

• Focus on the food before you take a bite. Breathe in the aroma. Look at the food. Feel the weight of the utensil in your hand.

• Savor one bite at a time. This can take some reprogramming of your eating habits, especially if you’re used to eating at a faster pace. Chew carefully and roll the food around in your mouth. Swallow before you take the next bite. This might sound like advice from Captain Obvious, but it can show you how rushed you are when you eat as you usually do.

• Set your fork, spoon or chopsticks down between bites. Doing this forces you to pause and can help you understand how satisfied you’re feeling. Hurried eating often masks that full feeling and causes you to overeat before you recognize what’s happening.

• Take time to find the right eating pace. At first this new eating pattern might feel foreign. But keep working on eating with full awareness, and you’ll find the pace that works best for you.

EATING WITH CARE EQUALS SELF-CARE Eating with purpose and care is an essential component of a non-diet approach to health and weight control. It asks you to begin accepting yourself as you are, to stop obsessing over your numbers on a scale and to focus on taking care of yourself.

If you’re ready to invest in better health — dropping pounds, lowering your cholesterol, reducing heartburn or whatever health condition keeps you from having your best life — adopting a mindful eating approach can be your best first step.

MENTAL WELLNESS Be active in pursuing your own brain health Mental health — or brain health — is much in the news these days. Renewed concerns surface every time there’s a school shooting, whether its Columbine, Sandy Hook or Parkland, Fla. But mental health really is an everyday thing, not a once-in-awhile-in-the-headlines issue.

Mental wellness issues touch every one of us, whether we’re dealing with a bad day at work, a death in the family or your average run-of-the-mill blues.

Mental health problems are common, experts say, citing these figures: • 1 in 5 American adults experiences a mental-health issue.

• 1 in 10 young people experience a period of major depression.

• 1 in 25 Americans live with a serious mental illness (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or major depression).

• Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in America, accounting for more than 41,000 lives lost each year.

Despite the statistics, there’s a lot we can do to safeguard and proactively pursue mental wellness. This includes everything from feeling connected to friends and relatives, being physically active and eating a healthy diet, to practicing smart sleep habits, making time leisure, taking time for contemplation and relaxation, helping others and taking care of our spiritual needs, whatever they may be.

So just what does it mean to be mentally healthy?

Physicians say it means you have the ability to bounce back from life’s normal

stressors, that you can communicate your feelings and form good relationships, that you can set and achieve realistic goals, that you seek help in difficult situations and that you have a reasonable amount of self-esteem.

First, you should know what to look for in yourself and those closest to you.

EARLY WARNING SIGNS Anything on this list should raise a flag in your mind and prompt a call or visit to your doctor.

• Changes in eating habits.

• Changes in sleeping patterns.

• Changes in your energy level.

• Feeling numb.

• Experiencing unexpected aches or pains.

• Feeling helpless or hopeless.

• Discovering an inability to perform daily tasks as easily as before.

• Being unusually confused or forgetful.

• Getting angry or upset more easily.

• Worrying excessively or being more anxious than usual.

• Experiencing severe mood swings.

• Believing things are not true or real, or hearing voices.

• Having thoughts of harming yourself or others.

All is not doom and gloom, however. You can proactively pursue mental wellness in any number of ways. We’ll look at three of them.

SOCIAL CONNECTIONS Feeling truly connected to friends and family gives you a 50 percent chance of living longer. That’s a pretty big boost. It also gives you higher self-esteem and allows you to have more empathy for others.

Social connections lower rates of anxiety and depression and create a positive loop of feeling socially, emotionally and physically healthy, experts say. Research at UCLA has demonstrated that healthy social connections can even boost immunity and strengthen your genes. Here’s how you can get there: • Take time for family every day.

• Arrange an outing with friends you haven’t seen in a while.

• Turn off the TV and play with your pets or children, or just have a conversation.

• Use your cellphone to call another real human being instead of using it solely for games, music and texts.

• Have lunch with a friend or co-worker instead of skipping the meal or tossing it down while at your desk.

• Visit someone you know who might need company or support.

• Volunteer.

Don’t look at those as a checklist. Doing one or two a day, or a few each week, will make a difference in how you feel.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY We’ve all heard it before, but it bears repeating: Being physically active is good for your brain as well as your body, and actually protects against mental-health problems.

It decreases depression in older adults, reduces the symptoms of post-natal depression, is as effective as medication for mild to moderate anxiety and depression, and improves self-esteem and cognition in young people.

Playing a sport, research shows, reduces stress by 34 percent if you play 1-3 times per week and 47 percent if you play 4 or more times per week. It might even be fun.

SLEEP! You may be one of those who boast that you can get by — and actually function — on 4-6 hours of sleep per night. It may be true. Not everyone needs the same amount of sleep. Good sleep habits are what’s most important. A few tips: • Wake up and go to sleep at the same time every day, even on weekends.

• Avoid stimulating activity before bedtime — cellphone screens, gaming devices, arguments.

• Use your bedroom for sleep or intimacy only.

• Keep your bedroom dark and free of noise.

• Avoid (or at least limit) alcohol, caffeine and nicotine.

• Use relaxation techniques if they help.

• Get daylight exposure bright and early.
