Springtime for mel How The Producers made a hit of the flop that was a hit

By Curt Holman

“Where Did We Go Right?” producer Max Bialystock laments in The Producers when he achieves unwelcome Broadway success after betting on failure. Mel Brooks may have asked himself “Where didn’t we go right?” when contemplating the emphatic popularity of The Producers, which ran for 2,502 Broadway performances and won 12 Tony awards.

After serving as an Army combat engineer in World War II, Brooks became a pianist and drummer in the famed Borscht Belt of Catskill Mountains resorts. He went on to do stand-up comedy, then became a staff writer for Sid Caesar’s “Your Show of Shows” and eventually a filmmaker, but he always retained the instincts of an old-school song-and-dance lover.

In the wake of The Producers’ acclaim, Brooks liked to say that the show put the “comedy” back in “musical comedy.” The show found the widespread appeal that eluded his original film version, a commercial disappointment despite winning the Academy Award for best original screenplay.

He made his big-screen writing and directing debut with The Producers in 1968, based on one of the best premises in comic history: Two producers attempt to defraud their investors by deliberately making Broadway’s biggest flop, only to have their show become a surprise smash and blow up in their faces. Brooks wanted to call the film Springtime for Hitler after the pro-

Nazi comedy within the show, but his producers balked. Brooks’ filmmaking career petered out in the 1990s with Dracula: Dead and Loving It, his final film to date, but DreamWorks co-founder David Geffen convinced a skeptical Brooks to turn The Producers into a stage musical. Brooks hired the husbandand-wife team of Michael Ockrent and Susan Stroman to direct and choreograph, respectively, but when Ockrent died of leukemia in 1999, Stroman took on both jobs. Brooks, who’d written the amusing lyrics and catchy melodies in the film, wrote the songs.

For the filmmaker’s fans, The Producers serves as both a master class in vaudevillestyle jokes of the “walk this way” variety and a compendium of Brooks lore. Several tunes take their titles from the movie’s dialogue, including “King of Broadway,” “If You’ve Got It, Flaunt It” and “Where Did We Go Right?” In the movie, Teutonic playwright Franz Liebkind’s innocent wish of “good luck” perhaps inspired the number about show-biz superstitions, “You Never Say

The movie was billed having “something to offend everyone,” but despite being an equal opportunity insulter, it provokes more nostalgia than outrage with its

tame, old-fashioned schtick about theater queens, Nazi sympathizers and vulgar show-biz moguls. Scandinavian bombshell Ulla may be a vapid bimbo in both versions, but at least in the musical she’s a forceful, confident woman with her own number.

dancing and acting talent.

Brooks even included a few inside jokes from his movies. During “The King of Broadway,” a chorus member makes the aside, “It’s good to be the king,” winking to a running joke from History of the World Part I. “Springtime for Hitler” builds a centerpiece around “Heil, Myself,” a catchphrase from Brooks’ World War II-era To Be or Not to Be. “Springtime for Hitler” also reprises Brooks’ off-screen cameo from the movie. On both stage and screen, a performer lip-syncs to Brooks’ prerecorded line,“Don’t be stupid, be a smarty / Come and join the Nazi Party.”

During David’s (fictional) Broadway debut, Brooks revealed to his real-life wife, Ann Bancroft, that he was sick of The Producers and wanted David to bomb so he could finally put the show behind him.

We should all have such failures. Curt Holman writes about arts and entertainment for Creative Loafing, Atlanta Magazine, ArtsATL.com, Paste and Encore Atlanta. He has won awards for critical writing from the Association of Alternative Newsmedia and the Society of Professional Journalists and, in 2005, was a National Endowment for the Arts fellow in theater and musical theater.

Matt polk

Brooks relished The Producers’ success and, in 2004, turned the scenario of an unwelcome hit back on himself with the help of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” The HBO show’s fourth season hinged on Brooks’ inexplicable casting of Larry David as Max Bialystock, despite David’s conspicuous lack of singing,

Audiences unexpectedly loved David’s awkward ad libs and made The Producers a hit all over again, leaving Brooks and Bancroft to lament, a la Bialystock and Bloom, “No way out.”

Dear Patrons, Subscribers and Friends: Happy New Year! Welcome to the fourth show of our 60th Season at Theater of the Stars, The Producers!

CHRISTOPHER B. MANOS Producer NICHOLAS F. MANOS President

The Producers is a big Broadway Musical that won a record 12 Tony Awards and wowed capacity crowds night after night. We decided to bring it back to Atlanta after an 8 year absence. This show sets the standard for modern, outrageous and in-your-face humor. This was one of our produced shows during our 60th Season and I am proud of our Cast and Creative Team. The partnership of Michael McCormick as Max, Stacey Todd Holt as Leo and the unforgettable Gary Beach as Roger DeBris (the Tony Award winner and creator of the role) is fantastic. I couldn’t be happier with this production. I hope you will enjoy the show as much as I have loved producing it. I am excited to see it on our stage. Thank you for being a part of our family and supporting Theater of the Stars. Our final show of our 60th Season, Mary Poppins, is coming up April 2-7, 2013. This has been a wonderful season and we hope you have enjoyed it. We look forward to our 61st Season which includes Dreamgirls with Jennifer Holliday, The Buddy Holly Story, Cats, Anything Goes, Stomp and Disney’s The Little Mermaid. If you have not renewed your subscription yet for the 2013 Season, please call us now. We look forward to seeing you at the Fox this year. If you are not a Subscriber or member of Theater of the Stars and would like to become one, I would like to take this time to invite you to join our Family for the 2013 Season. There are several opportunities for participation, including the Star Circle and Corporate Sponsorships. All include benefits that feature recognition and opportunities to get a closer look at how Theater of the Stars brings musical theater to life at The Fox. Please contact us at 404-252-8960 to find out more about our Programs or visit our website at www.theaterofthestars.com . As always, thank you for your patronage. Please sit back and enjoy this hysterical and “equal opportunity offender” production. All My Best, Christopher B. Manos Producer

Theater of the Stars wishes to express its gratitude to its Season Sponsors:

What began 12 years ago with 24 movies about Jewish life and 2,000 or so viewers is now Atlanta’s largest film festival and the second-largest Jewish film festival in the world. We’re talking about the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival (AJFF), which rolls out its 2013 edition Jan. 30 with a gala opening night at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. Its lineup of 70-plus films will be screened at five metro venues over three weeks: Regal Cinemas Atlantic Station Stadium 16 (Midtown); Lefont Sandy Springs; Georgia Theatre Company Merchants Walk (Marietta); United Artists Tara Cinema 4 (northeast Atlanta); and Regal Cinemas North Point Market 8 (Alpharetta). There are 115 Jewish film fests throughout the United States each year, in places such as Miami, New York and San Francisco. The Atlanta festival distinguishes itself by defying people’s expectation of what a Jewish film festival is, in the words of Executive Director Kenny Blank. The AJFF now attracts more than 30,000 attendees, showcasing international and independent works that metro audiences wouldn’t otherwise see. The films range from 60 EncoreAtlantA.com

documentaries to shorts to feature films that examine issues and topics that affect both Jews and non-Jews. The AJFF has twice been named Atlanta’s best film festival by readers of the alternative weekly newspaper Creative Loafing. Blank was a festival volunteer and WXIA-TV producer when he was hired as AJFF’s first full-time executive director in 2004. The New York University film school grad had a plan: Turn the festival into a major cultural event. To a large extent, he’s succeeded. “They’re just great films,” he’s said of the annual lineup. “They really stand on their own as great dramas or comedies or historic epics. They’re just good filmmaking, but they also happen to have some kind of Jewish theme.” The 2013 edition runs through Feb. 20. For a complete lineup, locations, details on speakers and more, visit the festival’s website at www.ajff.org. The event is produced by the American Jewish Committee Atlanta, whose mission is to build understanding between Jewish and non-Jewish communities.
