Here is where I would typically write about the play.

But instead, I’m going to write about the playwright.

I met the plays of Pearl Cleage before I met the woman herself. Saw productions of Flyin’ West and Blues for an Alabama Sky in Chicago theaters many moons ago and thought, “This woman knows how to hold an audience in the palm of her hand.” Flash a bit forward, and I found myself, for the first time, in a room with the writer. And I listened to this calm and measured voice talking about change and communion and civic responsibility and thought ,“This woman knows how to hold ANY room of people in the palm of her hand.”

Flash a bit further forward, and I found myself in a rehearsal hall with this writer, this poet, this citizen artist for the first time and understood that she, in fact, holds all of us — carefully and compassionately — in her hand.

Pearl scrutinizes people without them ever quite knowing it. With a quiet grace and 20/20 emotional vision, she takes the world in and assesses it with compassion and hope. She has taught me more about how to walk mindfully through our current and chaotic world than any of the many, many mindfulness apps and books that populate my phone and bookshelves. She has boundless joy, a wicked wit, and believes mightily that justice really is meant for all, and has lived her life in that pursuit. (As I write this, I look at a card she and her wonderful Zeke sent me after opening a particularly political show. “Tell the truth to the people,” it says. I put it where I would see it every day, just in case I don’t get to see Pearl every day.)

Atlantans have a great many things for which to be grateful. That Citizen Cleage chooses to make her home here, to spin her poetry here, to uplift her students and audiences here, and to write stories that keep us all in the palm of her hand here — well, that is at the top of my list.

TWO FOR ONE In Pearl Cleage’s Hospice + Pointing at the Moon, A-list actors Terry Burrell and Tinashe Kajese-Bolden play the same woman at 2 stages in her life.

nd now, for something old (1983) and something new from Atlanta playwright Pearl Cleage: two one-acts folded into a single piece of theater.

Hospice + Pointing at the Moon are both two-character, conversation-centric plays focused on the pull of close relationships.

They wrestle with the complexities of womanhood and how a parent’s love — or a longing for that love — shapes each of us.

Both feature the same house in Atlanta’s West End and involve the character of Jenny Anderson, who at times in her life has lived in this house, which once belonged to her grandparents.

In Hospice, the older play, Jenny is 30 and very pregnant. In Pointing at the Moon, she’s 60-plus and a respected scholar. Her

desire to understand her mother in Hospice becomes the central point in Pointing at the Moon. Hospice, not incidentally, won five AUDELCO awards recognizing excellence in black theater for its 1980s off-Broadway run.

The Alliance Theatre has cast Atlanta A-listers Terry Burrell and Tinashe KajeseBolden. Both play Jenny at different stages in the character’s life and both are coming off fairly recent successes.

Burrell (Ethel at the Alliance) earned great reviews and sold-out audiences for her work as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill at Theatrical Outfit this winter.

Kajese-Bolden (the Alliance’s Shakespeare in Love) has been riding high since winning a 2017 Suzi Bass Award for her direction of Eclipsed at Synchronicity Theatre.

Hospice lay dormant for years, until recently when Cleage decided to write a follow-up. “I wanted to see if I could catch up with Jenny,” she says. “I wondered what choices she had made, and I wanted to see what the effect of having a mother like that had been.”

Cleage is “giddy” about bringing her oneacts to fruition with Burrell, Kajese-Bolden and director Timothy Douglas, with whom she did Blues for an Alabama Sky in 1999.

“When you’ve got two amazing actors like Terry and Tinashe, who are operating at such a high level, a good playwright should not get in their way,” Cleage says, good-naturedly.

“Having Pearl in the rehearsal room is an unbelievable gift,” says Kajese-Bolden, praisingCleage’s poetic, physical writing.

“I really dig into the fiber of who my characters are. I want to know the background, the whole family tree. I have all kinds of quirky questions that an audience doesn’t necessarily ask or even need to know.

“Pearl is the kind of playwright with all of the answers and so much back story. But she doesn’t push any of it on you. What I love is that she quietly waits. And when you pose a question, she knows every detail, like where the character got her groceries and which books are in her room.”

Burrell hasn’t worked with Cleage before but has long been an admirer.

“I want to do right by her and give it everything possible because she has such confidence in us,” says Burrell, whose Broadway credits include Dreamgirls and Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Burrell and Kajese-Bolden, who hadn’t worked together before, did an informal reading of Hospice for Cleage long before rehearsals began.

“It didn’t take us long to know we could do that dance of relaxing with each other and taking chances,” Burrell says.

“We’re already past the niceties and politeness,” Kajese-Bolden says. “We can dive right in and be gutsy and daring.”

In Hospice, Jenny and her ailing mother are hardly into niceties. There’s hurt, baggage, misunderstanding. There are things to settle, or to at least try to understand — and time’s running out.

In Moon, Jenny is still wrestling with plenty, including our present-day political turbulence and her hopes for the #MeToo movement.

There’s a simplicity to both plays but also “a quiet, burning inferno,” says KajeseBolden.

“We’re so inundated by breaking news and ‘shocking’ this and that, that I think we almost become desensitized to having deep, meaningful conversations. Pearl has this quiet power to demand that we sit down, lean in and engage with our real lives and relationships.”

Cleage hopes theatergoers will leave thinking about their own mothers or, perhaps, unfinished business with someone else.

“I always want to give people the sense that yes, life is complicated, but you can do this, you can get through,” she says. “The hardest things of all are often the most personal.” A

While Jenny’s memories of her mother are accompanied by Leontyne Price and Billie Holiday music, mine of my dad are underscored with sounds from our local R&B station, Star 94.5 [Orlando, Fla.]. “I Wanna Be Where You Are” by a teenaged Michael Jackson played as my dad drove me home from school one day. He turned to me and said, “I taught Michael how to dance, you know.” Deadpan. Was it true? Sure it was. I was 6 years old and he’s my dad. It made the most sense.

A year and a half after an intense but quiet divorce from my mom, and after learning my dad wasn’t MJ’s choreographer (“What? Your daddy can’t dance,” my mom told me years later. “No rhythm at all”), my dad still managed to be magical, the way only parents can when you’re 7 and they know you’re trying to keep it together. Just like old times, he drove us around Orlando with our go-to station blaring from a silver Mazda. Near my seat, I found a yellow slip of paper with “You’re the First, the Last, My Everything” by Barry White recklessly jotted over the lines. I asked him why he had this.

He likes to guess what the DJ is going to play when he’s riding around, he told me. Star 94.5 is an oldies station, anything could play. One guess each day and he usually gets it right. Of course.

I know there’s only one like you There’s no way they could have made two You’re all I’m living for Your love I’ll keep for evermore You’re the first, you’re the last, my everything.

After a trip to the toy store for new bikes and video games, and my mom not giving as much as an eye roll, the song played. This was in 2000, and he didn’t even have a proper cellphone to make requests.

My dad is magic.

This day of being mystified and spoiled was the last time I saw him. I spent the next 11 years in the same town not knowing exactly where he was. He could be back home in Georgia, or in his South Florida haunts where he used to take me, a tiny version of him in pink. Was he still in Orlando, driving around guessing his song of the day? I wondered if he had the same moment I did in college when I heard our station didn’t play “classic R&B and today’s soul” but ’90s and early 2000s rap instead. I imagined he felt the same sense of betrayal I had, and that he was curious about my outrage. Did his mind go to me the way mine went straight to him?

“How come people that love you can’t read your mind?”

After having so many years to come up with an answer, Alice tells her daughter “that sepia-tone photograph you’ve been carrying around in your head for 20 years hasn’t got anything to do with me.” Oddly enough, I believe she’s right. Jenny and I hold an incomplete image of our parents filtered with frustration and leftover childlike curiosity. It’s not deeply complex or human.

Admittedly, it’s unfair, but can you blame us? It’s possible our parents gave our minds the tricks to play on us.

Through all of her talent and wisdom, Pearl Cleage wrote a play concerning the relationship that I have with my father, and she did it through two women finding themselves at the end of one life and the beginning of another. Hospice has an ending I don’t know whether I’ll have yet; one where we try to get past almost 20 years of silence and can at least be in the same room. We forgive and forget, or we don’t, but for a moment we’re together and listening to some of our old songs ...

synopsis Hospice: After a 20-year sojourn in Paris, poet Alice Anderson has returned to her deceased mother’s home in Atlanta’s West End. She moves in with Jenny Anderson, the daughter she abandoned to pursue her writing. Alice is dying of cancer, and these two women search for the emotional language of the past and present in the absence of a future.

Pointing at the Moon: Some 30 years later, Jenny (now a widowed professor) still lives in her grandmother’s West End house. After the funeral of Jenny’s dear friend Robert, her neighbor Isabel comes over. The women explore their new relationship as the remaining half of a vibrant quartet of friends and neighbors. As Jenny mourns the disappearing world she loved, Isabel explores a new path to social involvement and personal happiness.

The Alliance also creates and nurtures the careers of emerging writers through the Alliance/ Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, producing the world premiere for the competition winner as part of the regular season. The Alliance is deeply committed to Atlanta artists, showcasing locally based artists on a nationally watched stage, and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community through the Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab, providing developmental support and production resources for an annual roster of locally sourced performance projects.

The Alliance’s dedication to providing access to the arts is reflected in its commitment to creating new work for all ages, and to bringing that work into classrooms and communities across Atlanta and throughout the region. More than 80,000 students each year experience age-specific professional performances and participate in acting classes, drama camps and in-school initiatives through the Alliance Theatre Acting Program and Education Department. The Alliance’s groundbreaking Kathy and Ken Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young performances offer professionally produced, fully interactive theater for infants and toddlers; the Palefsky Collision Project invites high school artists to create and perform new civic-minded theater based on a classic text; and community acting classes and skill-building workshops engage professional artists, young actors, business leaders and curious learners of all ages. Twice recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for leadership in arts education, the Alliance Theatre Institute equips classroom teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum and have been empirically proven to improve student learning.
