THE TIMELESS GLAMOUR OF BOB MACKIE: THE VISIONARY BEHIND CHER’S ICONIC LOOKS

Bob Mackie, a titan in the world of costume and fashion design, has dazzled audiences for decades with his extraordinary creations. With nine Emmy Awards and three Academy Award nominations under his belt, Mackie’s work has been synonymous with glamour and creativity. As the Tony-winning costume designer for The Cher Show, Mackie revisited and reinvented the legendary styles of Cher, the superstar he has dressed for over 50 years in an array of sequins, feathers and bold statements.

A Historic First Encounter

Mackie’s journey with Cher began in 1967 during her guest appearance on “The Carol Burnett Show”. It was a moment that would set the stage for a groundbreaking partnership. “I was trying to fix a beaded dress in the hallway when Cher exclaimed, ‘I love beaded dresses!’” recalls Mackie. This casual conversation blossomed into a creative collaboration that would redefine fashion for women in entertainment.

“I told her, ‘When you’re ready, I’m ready,’” he remembers, signaling the start of a vibrant career marked by Cher’s unique style. At the time, Mackie was captivated by Cher’s unconventional look, which defied the beauty standards of the day. “Pretty girls were all boopsie and blonde back then,” he explains. “Cher was different—fascinating.”

Dressing Multiple Versions of Cher

Designing costumes for The Cher Show presented a unique challenge: capturing the essence of Cher through three actresses portraying different ages of her life. “It’s tricky because they’re not Cher. They don’t necessarily look like her or have her build,” Mackie notes. The challenge lies in creating garments that resonate with Cher’s spirit while accommodating the actresses’ interpretations.

Yet, Mackie’s experience shines through, allowing him to create looks that reflect Cher’s evolution while maintaining her signature flair. His designs have not only shaped Cher’s public persona but have also influenced a generation of women aspiring to express themselves through fashion.

A Personal Touch in the Spotlight

In a delightful twist, Mackie himself is a character in The Cher Show, portrayed by an actor in the show. Michael Beresse, who originated the role on Broadway, describes his experience: “Bob is the nicest man in the world. He made me feel so at home and comfortable.” This reflects Mackie’s genuine nature, even amidst the glamour of Broadway. “It’s the last thing I ever thought would happen,” Mackie says, chuckling at the notion of being represented on stage.

Simplistic Elegance Amidst Opulence

While Mackie is renowned for his extravagant and daring designs, he also understands the power of simplicity. He recounts a particular scene in the show where Cher, auditioning for a role, is dressed in jeans and a jacket. “I wanted her to look vulnerable,” he explains, despite Cher’s initial skepticism about the simplicity of the outfit. Cher’s signature style may often lean towards the outrageous, but Mackie’s vision encompasses a range of aesthetics that showcase the essence of the character.

Cher’s Strong Opinions

Mackie acknowledges Cher’s strong opinions about fashion. “She doesn’t want to look ordinary,” he says, emphasizing her desire to break free from traditional molds. This bold approach has allowed Mackie to create pieces that not only reflect Cher’s personality but also challenge societal expectations.

Yet, Mackie’s artistry transcends the flashiness often associated with show business. “He doesn’t like his clothes to appear vulgar,” Beresse notes. Mackie’s designs celebrate the human form, making everyone who wears them feel beautiful.

A Legacy of Friendship and Understanding

At the heart of Mackie’s work is a profound understanding of Cher, rooted in years of collaboration. “She realizes that I understand her,” he says, acknowledging the unique bond they share. This connection, forged through creativity and mutual respect, has not only shaped Mackie’s career but has also left an indelible mark on the world of fashion.

Mackie’s designs for The Cher Show highlight his enduring legacy as a designer, artist, and friend, showcasing the power of creativity, individuality, and timeless glamour. Whether adorned in sequins or dressed in denim, Mackie’s work tells a story that reaches far beyond the stage.

THE MAKING OF AN ANIMATED CLASSIC

Courtesy Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical | Crossroads Live North America

In 1966, nine years after the book was published, Ted received a call from his old friend Chuck Jones, a successful animator who had created Bugs Bunny, Wile E. Coyote, the Roadrunner, and many others. The two had worked together during World War II while creating military training films and had remained friends for life. Jones convinced Ted to adapt How The Grinch Stole Christmas! for television.

It was a painstaking task, as Jones used the full animation technique that had been popular at Disney. The idea behind full animation is that one could follow the story, with or without the benefit of narration. With full animation, a half-hour television program would require approximately 25,000 drawings - over 12 times as many drawings as most animations of equal length.

The length of the story, the color of the Grinch, and the development of a script that did not end on a trite or overly religious note also had to be addressed.

Ted was always very particular about colors, and it took some convincing by Jones for Ted to concede to paint the Grinch green with evil red eyes. The songs were a collaborative effort between Ted and composer, Albert Hague. To resolve Ted’s concern that the story end in a way that was not trite or overly religious, the script called for a star to rise to the heavens (rather than drop from the sky) to emphasis the power of the heart.

The voices of the characters in the film were very important. The voice of the Grinch (and the narrator of the film) was provided by Boris Karloff who was best known for his roles in monster movies such as Frankenstein’s monster in the 1931 film. The song “You’re a Mean One, Mister Grinch” was sung by Thurl Ravenscroft, whose rich baritone was also used for Tony the Tiger’s “grrrrrrreat” for Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes.

At last, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! aired in time for the 1966 holiday season and it still ranks high in viewer ratings. In 1971, it won a Peabody award in combination with an animated version of another Dr. Seuss classic, Horton Hears a Who!

Dr. Suess’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical is scheduled to come to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts starting December 18, 2024.
