ou may not have given him much thought until recently, but the guy on the $10 bill has become the most popular Founding Father in the land. His name is Hamilton, and here’s how. It was summer 2007, just before In the Heights moved to Broadway. Playwright-composer Lin-Manuel Miranda was vacationing in Mexico with girlfriend Vanessa Nadal and reading Ron Chernow’s 818-page Alexander Hamilton. Choosing that biography was some sort of crazy fate,

Four Hamilton cast members come from Georgia. They are:
• CHRIS De’SEAN LEE (Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson), who was born in Augusta and raised in Atlanta. He recently completed his junior year at Belmont University in Nashville.
• JEFFERY DUFFY (Ensemble), who has roots in Atlanta’s Adamsville neighborhood. He attended Pebblebrook High School/ Cobb County Center for Excellence in the Performing Arts and received his B.F.A. from The Juilliard School. In 2017, Dance Magazine named him one of “25 to Watch.”
• JENNIFER GELLER (Ensemble), who grew up in Marietta and attended Pebblebrook High’s CCCEPA. She has performed in regional theater and toured with Bring It On: The Musical.
• HOPE ENDRENYI (Swing), Miranda says. He turned to Nadal at one point and said, “I think this is a great hip-hop musical.” “That sounds cool,” she replied. Manuel and Nadal had known each other since high school, and he held great stock in her opinions, even though she’s not particularly fond of musicals. Her response was all the encouragement he needed. “Can you have Angelica rap?” she asked. “That would be cool.”

Miranda, who has married Nadal since then, spent the next seven years writing the script and score for Hamilton. Nadal came home from work one day and said, “Your king tune was stuck in my head all day. That’s probably a good sign.” She was right. King George’s witty Beatle-esque “You’ll Be Back” became a showstopper for Tony Award nominee Jonathan Groff. Miranda, now 38, considers Hamilton a love letter to his wife. “This show simply doesn’t exist without Vanessa,” he says. He calls her the “best of wives and best of women,” just as Hamilton does his wife, Eliza. Julia K. Harriman, who plays Eliza in Atlanta, says the role “is easily the coolest thing to ever happen to me.” BEST OF WIVES, BEST OF WOMEN Harriman, 25, had been working mostly as a singersongwriter and voice-over artist, with little theater experience. She often had trouble getting cast, she says, citing her Asian-Caucasian heritage and look. “I’d go in for a commercial, and they’d try to match me up with parents, but then they couldn’t be convinced that I looked like I could be the child of those parents. I never

saw someone who looked like me.” In Hamilton, that’s an advantage. From the get-go Miranda envisioned a multicultural cast — to represent a nation born to welcome immigrants and to signal America’s diversity today. For her first 10 months in Hamilton, Harriman stood by for the three Schuyler sisters, which meant learning four key roles, a time she calls “terrifying and intense.” She only knew a song or two from the score when she auditioned for Hamilton, and was cast before ever seeing it. ONE HISTORIC DAY IN 2015 … Hamilton opened on Broadway on Aug. 6, 2015, and became an immediate box-office hit and critical favorite. “I am loath to tell people to mortgage their houses and lease their children to acquire tickets to a hit Broadway show,” New York Times critic Ben Brantley wrote. “But Hamilton … might just about be worth it.” Hamilton won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for best musical. It won 11 of the 16 Tony categories in which it was nominated, including direction

The one-of-a-kind musical shows no signs of slowing. Four productions are playing simultaneously around the country, a feat never before accomplished. That means that more than 8,000 people experience Hamilton somewhere in North America each night, according to the Hollywood Reporter. It’s also in London, and Miranda has plans to play Hamilton in Puerto Rico. How to account for this watershed moment in theater history? The words “epic” and “contemporary” come to mind. A MUSICAL FOR NON-MUSICAL LOVERS Hamilton’s theme — the birth of a nation — is likely as big as they get. Among its cast of characters are three presidents, several vice presidents, a king, assorted

King George II believes the Colonists and their warmongering are foolish, warning them: “You’ll be back. You’ll remember you belong to me.”

U.S. Cabinet members and that scrappy title character introduced as “a bastard, orphan, son of a whore and a Scotsman dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot in the Caribbean by providence, impoverished in squalor …” The show’s up-to-the-minute vibe, multiracial casting, earth-tone design, energetic choreography, layered lyrics and melodic score (incorporating rap, soul, R&B and traditional Broadway sounds) have won over throngs who claim to have never liked musicals before. “The show in New York is different from our show,” Harriman says admiringly, “and our show is different from any of the others.” The freewheeling combinations of 28 diverse cast members “bring a whole new light every single time to this beautiful material and stunning choreography.” Harriman says she enjoys meeting and chatting with kids who see Hamilton as part of the show’s educational outreach. “My favorite thing of all is when kids who’ve just seen the show say that now they can see themselves onstage someday. This show is opening doors, crashing down barriers.” As Nadal might say: “That’s cool.”

he echoes of war in Georgia aren’t hard to hear if you know where to listen. The state was pivotal in the two most intense wars fought inside the United States — the American Revolution and the Civil War. Although almost 100 years apart, the footsteps of battalions from both conflicts crisscross everything from Georgia’s forested foothills to the streets of Savannah. Georgia, named for King George II and founded in 1733 as a British Colony, was one of 13 original Colonies. In 1788, it became the fourth state admitted to the newly minted Union. More than a century has passed but the hopes and hostilities of Georgia’s war history have not gone with the wind. Arm yourself with knowledge at these locations. KETTLE CREEK BATTLEFIELD Depending on who you ask, the 1779 Battle of Kettle Creek was either a minor backwoods skirmish or a big Revolutionary War win. Not under debate: That it was the only conflict in Georgia where the home team triumphed. Savannah had fallen two months earlier. In this clash between 600 British loyalists and 340 patriots, the Americans trounced all the king’s men, much to the dismay of the British, who thought they’d handily roll over the region. DID YOU KNOW? This battle took place near what became Washington, Ga., the first town in the country named for George Washington. WHAT YOU’LL FIND: A picnic area atop War Hill, hiking trails and historical markers. Eight miles east, on the

square in Washington, a monument dedicated to AfricanAmericans who fought for the Colonies. CIVIL WAR CONNECTION: There’s a legend of Confederate gold buried near Washington, worth $100,000 when stolen and hidden in 1865 (that’s about $2 million today). Tales persist of people finding old coins near Chennault Plantation in neighboring Lincoln County, but the bulk of the booty (according to a deathbed confession from a lighthouse keeper in the 1890s) was sent north by rail and for a time lay concealed at the bottom of Lake Michigan. The History Channel of late began airing “The Curse of the Civil War Gold” about a nationwide hunt for this lost Georgia treasure. DETAILS: kettlecreekbattlefield.org. SAVANNAH Georgia’s oldest city was the Colonial capital during the Revolution and an area of almost constant conflict. It was taken by the British in 1779, and remained in their control

The Savannah History Museum highlights the American Revolution, partly due to Battlefield Memorial Park next door and nearby Old Fort Jackson, Georgia’s longest-standing brick fort. The Battle of Savannah’s armies included soldiers from modern-day Haiti and five European countries. AfricanAmerican and Native Americans also fought in the conflict, one of the costliest for those bent on independence. The Coastal Heritage Society has unearthed evidence of this battle, including trenches and fortifications. WHAT YOU’LL FIND: Weapons and military uniforms among 10,000 artifacts that stretch from Savannah’s start as a city through the Revolutionary War and beyond. All are housed in an 1800s railroad building. Loyalists and Liberty programs happen Thursday-Sunday with re-enactments (participate if you wish) and musketfiring demonstrations (stand back and watch). Andersonville Prison at the Civil War’s Camp Sumpter was, and is, notorious for its inhumane conditions. About 100 men, Union soldiers all, died there each day.
FORT MORRIS At Fort Morris in the city of Midway, 40 miles south of Savannah, 200 patriots defended a growing Revolutionary War seaport. British forces demanded the fort’s surrender in 1778, but Georgia-born Col. John McIntosh refused, famously issuing the challenge, “Come and take it!” The British withdrew but regrouped, returned and captured the fort a few months later. WHAT YOU’LL FIND: A campground, picnic area, a visitors center and earthwork on 67 acres with a tranquil view over St. Catherines Sound at St. Catherines Island, one of Georgia’s Golden Isles. DID YOU KNOW: A population of free-ranging lemurs live on St. Catherines Island, the only such group outside Madagascar.
ANDERSONVILLE Camp Sumpter, best known as the site of the infamous Andersonville Prison, held Union soldiers during the final year of the Civil War under the command of Capt. Henry Wirz. The POW camp, built to house 10,000 men, held more than 33,000, many of them wounded. With 60

The museum recently obtained a “passbox” for an IX-inch Dahlgren gun, a muzzle-loading cannon. KENNESAW MOUNTAIN BATTLEFIELD This 2,965-acre park preserves a Civil War battlefield from the Atlanta Campaign. The first shot was fired near Chattanooga in May 1864. By June, Gen. William T. Sherman launched his frontal assault on Confederate troops at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. At stake was Atlanta, with its railroad hub and supply centers. In a classic case of winning the battle but losing the war, Southern soldiers were victorious at Kennesaw but failed to halt Sherman’s advance. The Confederacy’s worst fears were realized when the general followed his troops to Atlanta and, on Nov. 15, 1864, ordered the city burned to the ground. The Cyclorama, a massive 6-ton cylindrical painting depicting the Battle of Atlanta, was finished in 1886 and, in 2017, moved from its longtime location in Atlanta’s Grant Park neighborhood to the Atlanta History Center in Buckhead. The 374-ft. diorama is in the midst of a multimilliondollar restoration and is expected to reopen to the public in the fall of 2018. Until then, private, pre-opening tours are available Saturdays. WELL DONE Despite a dearth of historic structures in Atlanta, a few 20th-century icons still hide in plain sight. Midtown’s “Castle,” a six-level, 1910-era mansion, is one such survivor. SIMMERING Ponce City Market’s iconic — and long-vacant — tower will become home to RFD Social, a concept from Slater Hospitality, the owners and operators of PCM’s rooftop Skyline Park and Nine Mile Station. The name comes from the 1920s radio show “Dinner Bell R.F.D.,” which was broadcast from the tower’s 11th floor. RFD Social will include the Parlour, a “re-energized” extension of the indoor lobby with a public bar area, and the Roebuck Room, a special-events space that will hold up to 175 people. …

Say hello to happy news for Buckhead. Roswell’s popular Little Alley Steak opens a second spot there, likely due — at this writing — in early May. The new Little Alley moves into the space once occupied by Emeril’s and AJA. Look for an oversized dining room; a 2,500-sq. ft. outdoor terrace with a full bar, lounge and dining patio; and more than 356 bourbons.

You’ll find New Realm Brewing Co. on the Eastside Trail of the Atlanta BeltLine. Among its highlights: Spanishstyle tomato-braised pork meatballs (top) and, well, fresh beer!
Kevin Gillespie, former “Top Chef” combatant and owner of Gunshow and Revival, will open Cold Beer, a 7,000-sq. ft. cocktail bar/beer garden near the BeltLine’s Old Fourth Ward path. Expect three patios, all facing the BeltLine, with one of them on a rooftop. The beer garden plans a sizable dining room and bar. Cold Beer will join a new Shake Shack and Hazel Jane’s Wine & Coffee in the Edge mixed-use development at Edgewood and DeKalb avenues. Construction should begin midyear, with an opening anticipated for mid-2019. …
TOAST Much to the chagrin of its fans (and it had many), the Houston’s on Lenox Road closed after 30 years and a high-profile boycott organized by rapper T.I. The sides mended fences in early February (“We may now enjoy the spinach dip again!” T.I. tweeted), but allegations of racial profiling hurt the restaurant’s reputation. The spinach dip is still available at the Peachtree Road and Northside Parkway locations. … Muss & Turner’s in East Cobb closed less than a year after opening. In a press release, namesake Ryan Turner said the closure was due to location and a dining market that proved less fertile than the eatery’s original spot on Cumberland

The restaurant was a millennium pioneer on the contemporary Atlanta dining scene but, after 16 years, founder Bob Amick decided to focus on his consulting business instead. FOX FUN FACTS Uncover the mysteries found within the Egyptian Ballroom There’s more to the Fox Theatre than its Moorish design, spacious stage and expansive 4,665-seat auditorium. The Fox’s hallways, alcoves and meeting/event spaces are just as luxe as everything else in sight. The Egyptian Ballroom, Grand Salon and Spanish Room — all event spaces that can be rented for parties, weddings and the like — were originally Shriners’ meeting spaces. Here are few more facts about one of them, the Egyptian Ballroom: • The Atlanta Shriners, a fraternal organization, first conceived the idea for the building that became the Fox. Members reserved the Egyptian Ballroom for Shriners’ ceremonies and celebrations. They used the adjoining Grand Salon as a library. • The ballroom’s original 7,500-sq. ft. floor is made of hard maple, also known as rock maple. A custom-designed carpet with Egyptian symbols of the afterlife and resurrection now protects the maple floor.
• The gilded and glazed wings of Osiris stretch above the ballroom’s stage. A plaster intaglio panel (an incised or engraved design) of Ramses II subduing an enemy is the focal point. • The painted symbols in the ballroom are authentic hieroglyphics but don’t form any real phrases when put together.

• The ballroom’s walls were covered with several coats of paint in the 1970s, obscuring its original stenciled designs. When the years of paint were removed, vivid Egyptian symbols for life and rebirth once again saw the light of day ... and night.
• The ballroom’s balcony is a scarab, or dung beetle, the symbol for the sun god Ra, who was thought to ward off evil. It’s surrounded by the wings of Osiris, god of the underworld, afterlife and resurrection.
