The ladies, especially, are enraptured by the strutting Will Shakespeare (Adam Pascal, center), with the Something Rotten! company.

I

f anyone ever had greatness thrust upon him, it’s Adam Pascal.

In 1996, at age 26, he came out of nowhere to originate the role of Roger Davis in the singular Broadway musical Rent.

A guitar-playing rocker, Pascal grew up in New York City but had never thought about musical theater nor auditioned for anything.

But he knew Idina Menzel, who’d already been hired to

play Maureen. They’d been friends since third grade, and she knew the show hadn’t found its Roger. The concept sounded cool to Pascal, so he brought his guitar and auditioned with U2’s “Red Hill Mining Town.”

He got the gig and, after a brief off-Broadway run, the musical moved to Broadway. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the 1996 Tony Award for best new musical and ran for 11 years.

Suddenly, girls were screaming Pascal’s name at the stage door, wanting to touch him, begging for his autograph.

“It was pretty wild,” he says from a stop on the Something Rotten! tour. “It certainly took a while to realize that nothing else would ever live up to that level of success.”

Pascal spent 18 months on Broadway, did Rent in London for six months, filmed the so-so 2005 movie and returned for the show's 2009 national tour.

Now 47, Pascal is crisscrossing the nation as the world’s biggest rock star of the ’90s — the 1590s. He plays a swaggering Will Shakespeare in the national tour of Something Rotten!, slipping into the leathers and tight breeches of Christian Borle, who won a Tony for the role.

Pascal joined Something Rotten! for its final two months on Broadway and agreed to tour. He’s joined by Josh Grisetti and Rob McClure (as Nigel and Nick Bottom), who also played the show’s final months on Broadway,

In addition to telling its own story, Something Rotten! doubles as a valentine to the Broadway musical. Its score is laced with bits of familiar melodies.

Think David Bowie or Mick Jagger in an Elizabethan getup with an oversized codpiece and knee-high boots.

“The opportunity to disappear into a costume,” Pascal says, “is one of the things that most appeals to me about doing theater.”

People have said there’s a Bowie-esque quality to his performance. If so, it wasn’t intentional. “I think there’s a bit of Stewie Griffin from ‘Family Guy’ in my Shakespeare,” he says.

Pascal camps it up mirthfully in the number “It’s Hard to Be the Bard.” Backed by four manservants — sort of like Gladys Knight’s Pips — he sings:

on the chance to write the first one. In doing so, Something Rotten! doubles as a valentine to Broadway musicals, its score laced with bits of melody from familiar shows.

Something Rotten! “isn’t sappy and doesn’t have those other stereotypical characteristics — all those things that make people decide they don’t like musicals,” Pascal says.

“I liken it to a combination of Mel Brooks and Monty Python. Men [especially] like that kind of humor.”

An L.A. guy now Pascal grew up in and around Manhattan, but says he’d much rather be on tour than living there now. “It’s just a bit too much for me.” Being on tour “helps with the monotony of being away from my family, which is the hardest part.”

He’s called Los Angeles home for a dozen years. He and wife Cybele, married for almost 20 years, have sons who are 16 and 14. The oldest, like Dad, is a singer-guitarist. His wife runs Cybele’s Free to Eat, a gluten- and allergy-free foods company.

also wants — and needs — to work. He’s uninterested in “playing that Hollywood game, going to endless auditions and all of that.” He’s also uninterested in doing stage work on the West Coast. “Nothing happens in California in terms of theater,” he says, “nothing worth my time.”

In recent years, Pascal and buddy Anthony Rapp, Rent’s original Mark Cohen, developed a cabaret-type show they perform when possible. It includes Rent’s “What You Own,” a duet that showcases their harmonies.

Pascal’s post-Rent Broadway career has included leading roles in Aida and Memphis. In 2016, he did the painfully titled flop Disaster! — a sendup of 1970s’ disaster films with pop hits from the era. He once hoped to play the masked man in Phantom of the Opera and auditioned, but he was not cast. He’d like to play Jean Valjean in Les Misérables, he says, adding, “The good news is I haven’t aged out of that role yet.”

For now, channeling Will Shakes as a raving narcissist suits him fine. If all the world’s a stage, he gets to strut on stages all across the country.

He also tap dances, something he’s never done before.

Tapping can be a little irksome with a knee issue, so he pampers his knee in hotel gyms and spas when possible.

It’s about taking care of himself. And about taking seriously the message of Something Rotten!: “To thine own self be true.”

f your bucket list includes filling your bucket with wine, North Georgia is a fine place to start. The state has some 50 wineries (impressive considering the challenges of grape-growing in the Deep South), with most in or near the mountains, tucked into bucolic niches and spread across rolling landscapes.

While other wine regions are undoubtedly more famous, don’t discount Peach State grapes as a secondhand rosé.

North Georgia wine country delivers killer views and a rural charm that will relax you even before the sipping starts. The area also produces wines that win regional, national and international awards.

Wine is sexy. Oenophiles discuss the body profile, the legs and the finish with a knowing wink. It all means something. Body is how the wine feels in your mouth. The

12 SPIES VINEYARDS Founder/winemaker Mike Brown dismisses the idea that the everyday person is not a wine expert. “Do you know what you like? Then you’re an expert at what you like,” says the former financial services executive.

The whimsical tasting room (which Brown built, along with the winery) lends itself to easy conversation and new friends made over a glass or three (perhaps why 12 Spies received a TripAdvisor certificate of excellence). The vino veranda has country views defined by layers of green, and a wood-burning oven for pizza parties. Tastings are $1 per pour. The Cabernet Franc alone is worth the trip.

12 Spies also makes an aptly named, for Southerners, Bless Your Heart muscadine (less sweet than others).

Brown says the winery’s name is from the Old Testament and came to him as he sat in church. The wines have playful names like Holy Moses Red and Lordy Mercy, a Seyval blanc and Petit Manseng blend.

Brown doesn’t enter contests. Yet. But his business has grown from about 500 cases in 2012 to a projected 3,000 this year. For him, it’s about the wine and especially enjoying the people who enjoy wine.

STONEWALL CREEK VINEYARDS Stonewall Creek’s valley view is striking, and its wines won multiple awards at the 2016 Georgia Trustees Wine Challenge.

Uncork and unwind in the homey tasting room or on the expansive covered patio, which overlooks 3,000 precisely planted vines and the rise of Glassy Mountain.

Co-founder/winemaker Carl Fackler, a retired orthopedic surgeon, now uses his tactile skills on the vines.

Everything is done by hand, from planting and harvesting the grapes to labeling every bottle in the 900 cases of wine produced each year.

Leftover wine goes into fine-wine jellies, served with cheese and crackers in the tasting room. You’ll often find Fackler and wife Carla there, conversing with visitors. Max the dog will wag you inside.

Red wine lovers will love Stonewall Creek. Its Cabernet Franc is an award winner; the mild, tasty 2015 Malbec aged 12 months in French and Bulgarian oak. The Malbec is named Three Eagles, for the couple’s sons, all Eagle Scouts.

TIGER MOUNTAIN VINEYARDS In 1995, a fifth-generation family farm became Tiger Mountain Vineyards, the first in the area and the first vinifera (white Mediterranean grape) vineyard in Georgia.

At 100 acres, it’s still one of the largest, too.

John Ezzard, who made his living as a urologist, was born on the farm in 1936, and founded the winery with wife Martha, a onetime columnist and author (The Second Bud, Deserting the City for a Farm Winery).

He died in November, but you might meet Miss Martha, who at 77, is still a force of nature.

Tiger Mountain focuses on fine, dry, white European wines and has a list of awards as long as the mountain views from the property's 75-year-old Red Barn Café. That list includes prestigious international honors.

Your many choices include whites (a one-of-a-kind, lateharvest Petit Manseng) and reds (go for the Malbec). The challenge is deciding which eight wines to taste for the $10 it costs.

Each May, Atlanta’s Seed & Feed Marching Abominables visit to perform and “wake the vines” for growing season.

THE ALLIANCE THEATRE christens its brand-spanking-new mainstage in 2018/19 with five world premieres, two regional premieres, new work from Atlanta artists Pearl Cleage, Phillip DePoy and Mary Lynn Owen, and a piece by Faith Salie of National Public Radio and “CBS News Sunday Morning.”

The Alliance, which turns 50 next season, has produced 110 world premieres since its founding in 1968, becoming a heavyweight in the world of American regional theater and winning the regional theater Tony Award in 2007. Susan V. Booth has led the company as artistic director since 2001.

“The best part of theater, I’ve always thought, is the living and breathing pulse it gives to human language,” Booth said in a statement, “the elevation of the spoken word to an art form, and the pure wonder that a mere mortal can say exactly the right thing at exactly the right time.”

After a season on the road to allow for renovations, the company returns to its Midtown home at the Woodruff Arts Center. The new 650-seat CocaCola Stage opens in October with events for subscribers, patrons, artists and the community, and sees its first production in January. It has been redesigned to upgrade

the theatergoing experience by creating a more intimate, comfortable and soundsensitive space (the old mainstage seated 770). The renovation project included upgrades to rehearsal, education and artist support spaces. The 200-seat Hertz Stage, a flexible black box, received technical upgrades.

In January, the Coca-Cola Stage debuts with the musical Ever After, based on the 1998 movie with Drew Barrymore. The score comes from the award-winning songwriting team of Zina Goldrich and Marcy Heisler, with JoAnn M. Hunter choreographing.

The Coca-Cola stage will see three productions and the Hertz Stage will see four, including the 2019 winner of the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition. One show will be done outdoors at the Atlanta Botanical Garden; A Christmas Carol returns to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre for a second season; and all three Family Series shows will be done at the Woodruff Arts Center's Rich Theatre.

Le Clanché du Rand wrote the script, with music by Allan J. Friedman and lyrics by A.A. Milne, Kristin Sergel and du Rand. Leora Morris, the Alliance's 2016/17 Yale Directing Fellow, directs. The exhibition Winnie-the-Pooh: Exploring a Classic runs concurrently (June 3-Sept. 2) at the High Museum of Art, making its first U.S. visit.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM | Sept. 5-Oct. 21. Atlanta Botanical Garden. A world premiere adaptation from David Catlin of Chicago's Lookingglass Theatre Company (Lookingglass Alice, Moby Dick). Described as a whimsical, outdoor version of the Shakespeare comedy, in which two couples deal with love and all its complications — confusion, jealousy and passion. On their journey to happily ever after, the lovers encounter a band of actors, wood sprites and elves, a botched love potion and the wedding of a king. Catlin directs.

NICK'S FLAMINGO GRILL | Sept. 29-Oct. 28. Hertz Stage. A world premiere musical by actor-playwright-director-musiciancomposer-novelist and educator Phillip DePoy (2015's Edward Foote). Inspired by the true story of the first integrated nightclub in Atlanta and featuring 10 original jazz songs

by DePoy and Tyrone Jackson. The story: Two World War II ex-GIs have become jazz musicians and found great success in the nightclubs of Paris. This convinces them that their mixed-race act will be a hit in the States, too. So they return home, to 1950s Georgia. Tinashe Kajese-Bolden (Synchronicity Theatre's Suzi Bass Award-winning Eclipsed) directs, with musical direction by Jackson.

PAIGE IN FULL | Oct. 6-13. Rich Theatre.

Family Series. This piece for middle-school audiences, first seen in on stages in 2010, uses poetry, dance, media and music to tell the story of a multicultural girl and her journey through hip-hop to self-discovery. Paige in Full looks at how ethnicity and pop culture shape our identities, in what's described as a "personal, yet universal story." Written and choreographed by Paige Hernandez.

Hernandez — a multidisciplinary performer, director, choreographer — has been named a Classroom Hero by The Huffington Post, a Citizen Artist Fellow by the Kennedy Center and one of "Six Theater Workers You Should Know" by American Theatre magazine. Hernandez and the Alliance’s Rosemary Newcott direct.

KNEAD | Nov. 13-Dec. 9. Hertz Stage. This world premiere, written by and featuring Atlanta theater artist Mary Lynn Owen, was developed through the Alliance's Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab, which provides a producing home for works in development.

The story: In the wee hours of the morning, a woman bakes bread, determined that her mother’s incomprehensible recipe will finally work. But something is different on this night. Time and memory keep interfering — the kneading, rising, shaping and baking, all in real time — become a journey into the unpredictability of, well, just about everything. Owen, who has been seen on most, if not all, metro stages, is a 2016 Suzi award-winning best actress for her work in Aurora Theatre's Wit. Atlanta-based artist David de Vries directs.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL | Dec. 12-24. Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. This is the Alliance's traditional multicultural, musical adaptation from David H. Bell, the company's associate artistic director in the Kenny Leon years. As you might well know, it's Christmas Eve, and the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by four ghosts — his old partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. They give him one last chance to reshape his future. Newcott directs.

EVER AFTER | Jan. 19-Feb. 17. Coca-Cola Stage. A new take on the Cinderella legend, based on the 1998 feature film (and the original 1729 fairy tale). Follow a young woman named Danielle de Barbarac, who risks everything to save a friend from an unjust fate. With the help of Leonardo da Vinci (yes, da Vinci) she must decide who she is, what she’ll fight for and how far she’ll go for love. In its 2015 world premiere at Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, N.J., critics praised Ever After for its score but were less enthusiastic about the script. At the time, there was speculation of a Broadway run, which hasn't happened ... yet. Creators Marcy Heisler (book and lyrics) and Zina Goldrich (composer) have been collaborating since 1993. Among other honors, they were the first women to win the Fred Ebb Award for musical theater songwriting. Their other projects include Junie B’s Essential Survival Guide to School and Dear Edwina (both off-Broadway); The Great American Mousical, based on the best-selling book by Julie Andrews (Goodspeed Opera House); and Snow White Rose Red (and Fred) at the Kennedy Center. Goldrich and Heisler are also performing and recording artists.

Hertz Stage. This world premiere by Northwestern University's B.J. Tindal is the 2019 winner of the Alliance/Kendeda competition. "Who was Tyler Evans?," it asks. Apparently, he was either a beloved best friend, grandson, mentor and fiancé, or a young black man killed by a police officer. To control the contradicting narratives of his death, Tyler haunts his best friend as other friends and relatives quibble over his legacy. The Alliance describes Goodnight, Tyler as a "contemporary and unexpectedly humorous drama."

Much-loved Atlanta playwright Pearl Cleage draws on a life of art and activism to probe today's political landscape. The story: Two former activists set out to find a candidate they can back in an upcoming congressional race and find a political landscape quite different from the one they knew in their 1970s glory days. The wave of womanpower draws them back to the fight but seems a strange place — long on contradictions and short on sisterhood — which makes them question their values and a friendship that has lasted 30 years. Booth, who frequently collaborates with Cleage, the company’s playwright in residence, directs.

Here she reveals how she finally won gold stars from her toughest critic, herself.

RIDE THE CYCLONE | May 1-26. Coca-Cola Stage. A regional premiere musical from the Canadian team of Brooke Maxwell (music and lyrics) and Jacob Richmond (music, lyrics and book). The story: The St. Cassian High School Chamber Choir will board the Cyclone roller coaster at 8:17 p.m. At 8:19 the front axle will break, sending them to their deaths. A mechanical fortuneteller invites each of the six singers to tell their story of a life interrupted — with the promise of a remarkable prize. Ride the Cyclone began life in 2009 at Atomic Vaudeville in Victoria, British Columbia, and went on to win three Toronto Theatre Critics Awards (2012) and make its American premiere at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre (2015). New York Times critic Charles Isherwood listed the 2016 off-Broadway production among his Top 10 shows of the year, calling it "just plain fun from start to finish ... wildly original ... [and] part comedy, part tragedy and wholly unexpected."

FOX FUN FACTS Uncover the mysteries that lie within the Egyptian Ballroom There’s more to the Fox Theatre than its expansive 4,665-seat auditorium, Moorish design and spacious stage. Its hallways, alcoves and meeting/event spaces are just as luxe as everything else in sight. In fact, the Egyptian Ballroom, Grand Salon and Spanish Room — all event spaces that can be rented for parties, weddings and the like — were originally Shriners’ meeting spaces.

Here are few more fun facts about the Egyptian Ballroom: • The Atlanta Shriners organization, which first conceived the idea for the majestic home that became the Fox, reserved the Egyptian Ballroom for its ceremonies and celebrations.

It reserved the adjoining Grand Salon for a library.

• The ballroom’s original 7,500-sq. ft. floor is made of hard maple, also known as rock maple. A custom-designed carpet with Egyptian symbols of the afterlife and resurrection now protects the maple floor.

• The gilded and glazed wings of Osiris stretch above the ballroom’s stage. A plaster intaglio panel (an incised or engraved design) of Ramses II subduing an enemy is the focal point.

• The painted symbols in the ballroom are authentic hieroglyphics but don’t form any real phrases when put together.

• The ballroom’s walls were covered with several coats of paint in the 1970s, obscuring its original stenciled designs. When the years of paint were removed, vivid Egyptian symbols for life and rebirth once again saw the light of day ... and night.

• The ballroom’s balcony is a scarab, or dung beetle, the symbol for the sun god Ra, who was thought to ward off evil. It’s surrounded by the wings of Osiris, god of the underworld, afterlife and resurrection.
