His family traveled together as his dad performed in the world’s great concert halls.

His mother, Nela, was a ballerina who became a gourmet cook, hosting dinner guests that included Hollywood royalty from Charlie Chaplin to Clark Gable. Her father, Emil Młynarska, conducted the Warsaw Philharmonic.

hen John Rubinstein was called back to Broadway to play King Charlemagne in Pippin, he had a one-word response.

“Yipppppeeeeee!”

In 1972, as a baby-faced, curly-haired unknown, Rubinstein won the title role in the original Broadway cast and spent two years playing the sensitive lad who would rather ponder the meaning of life than go roaring into battle.

He saw director Diane Paulus’ new version, an acrobatic rendering that’ departs quite radically from Bob Fosse’s original staging, in 2013. The actor-singer-composer, now 68, happily discovered that despite being a very different show, the new Pippin honors the essential story, and the melodic Stephen Schwartz score remains intact. This version won four Tony awards, including best musical revival and best director.

“It’s such a universal story,” Rubinstein says. “It’s a story about every single person in the audience, young or old. It’s not really about Prince Pippin, Charlemagne’s son in the Dark Ages. It’s about all of us and our search for fulfillment and our desire to accomplish something while we’re here.”

Pippin is ideal for an innovator like Paulus (Hair, The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess), he says. “My Fair Lady needs to take place in London and The Music Man has got to be in Iowa. But Pippin, even though it’s historical and set in the days of Charlemagne, it could take place on the moon and would still be a great show.”

The son of the world-famous classical pianist Arthur Rubinstein, (1887-1982), John knew a big life well before he captured hearts as Pippin or won a 1980 Tony Award for playing James Leeds in Children of a Lesser God. The youngest of four, he knew “a fan-

Rubinstein’s career has been impressive in scope. He’s done a lot rather well: theater (acting and directing), film, television, music, teaching, radio commentary and more.

Who knew that Broadway’s original Pippin composed and conducted musical scores for such feature films as Robert Redford’s Jeremiah Johnson and The Candidate? That he’s done the same

for more than 50 made-for-TV movies? That he’s recorded some 200 audiobooks, including Jonathan Kellerman’s best-selling Alex Delaware detective series?

He’s pragmatic when asked how he does it all. “You know, very little choice goes into it. I have five kids and things like college are expensive. I’m just in the habit of saying yes. I’ve turned down three jobs in my entire life. Whoever

ROLLING ADVICE FROM TERRENCE MANN When Rubinstein replaced Terrence Mann as Charlemagne on Broadway last summer, he says he “stole as many of his good bits as I could.” The knife-throwing scene was tricky, because it was staged for Mann, who’s left-handed. Rubinstein is right-handed.

“So I have to do it in a completely different way to make it work,” Rubenstein says.

Did he ask get any other advice from Mann?

“Yes. He told me to make sure to tuck in my robe when I’m sitting on this rolling unit so the robe doesn’t get all caught up.

You’ve got to be aware about things like that.”

As the youngest of four accomplished siblings, Rubinstein sees a bit of similarity between himself and Pippin.

“My father was famous, huge, iconic,” Rubinstein says. “I was very proud of him and awed by what he was accomplished.

And there were definitely times when I was growing up when the story was more about him than about me.

Likewise, there’s a scene in Pippin when Pippin is trying to talk to Charlemagne and Charlemagne is paying little attention to him.

So yes, there are some things that are common with my upbringing.

Rubinstein teaches musical theater at the University of Southern California and directs the big spring musical there almost every year. After becoming Pippin’s Charlemagne on Broadway last summer, he agreed to do the first national tour, his first road show since 1968, when he did On a Clear Day You Can See Forever.

And you’ve probably seen him on TV (“The Closer,” “House,” “The Young and the Restless,” “Girlfriends”) most likely playing a doctor, a school principal or a judge.

Asked why he’s so frequently cast as an authority figure, he replies, self-deprecatingly: “I think it’s because I speak in good sentences and I have white hair.”

He’s been invited over the de-

cades to high schools and colleges staging Pippin, and he’s happy to oblige whenever possible, as he did some 15 years ago at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, where he watched rehearsal and offered feedback.

Last summer, as he prepared to take over as Charlemagne, a young man approached him backstage at Broadway’s Music Box Theatre.

“Hi, my name’s Ryan,” the young man said, “and I’m the musical director for the national tour of this show, and actually we’ve already met. I played Pippin in the high school show you came to years ago.”

“Whoever would have thought?” Rubinstein says. “I love little circles like that. I love that our paths have crossed again in this wonderful way.”

FOR YOUR INFORMATION THE THEATRE A fully restored 1929 “Movie Palace,” the Fox Theatre, with 4,665 seats, is a multiple-purpose facility, housing Broadway shows, ballet, symphonies, concerts, movies, and private corporate events.

PRIVATE ROOMS The Fox Theatre has three private rental spaces, with accommodations for 25 to 1,200 guests. Our Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon are beautifully decorated and can be set up to your specifications. The Landmarks Lounge is adjacent to the lobby and is perfect for a small pre-show and intermission event. TICKET OFFICE The Fox Theatre Ticket Office is located in the arcade entrance to the theatre. The Ticket Office is open for walk up ticket sales Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., and Saturday,10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. The Fox Theatre Ticket Office is not open on Sundays unless there is a performance. On event days, the Ticket Office opens two hours prior to show time. Doors to the Fox open one hour prior to show time.

GROUP SALES The Fox Theatre Group Sales Department offers discounts to Groups for most Broadway shows. The Group Sales office is open Monday-Friday from 9am to 5pm. Call 404 881-2000 or email foxgroup@foxtheatre.org.

CONCESSIONS Concession stands are located in the Spanish Room, main lobby, and on the mezzanine lobby level.

RESTROOMS Restrooms are located off the Main Lobby (downstairs), Mezzanine Lobby levels, and the Gallery level. Accessible restroom facilities are located in the Spanish Room and Accessible/Family restrooms are located through the Office door in the main lobby.

GIFT SHOP The Fox Theatre operates a gift shop selling history books, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and an assortment of other theatre-related merchandise. The gift shop is located in the Spanish Room.

TOURS Fox Theatre Tours are conducted Mondays and Thursdays at 10 AM, 11 AM, noon and 1 PM. Saturday tours are offered at 10 AM and 11 AM. Fox Theatre Tours are guided by Fox employees well-versed in the Fox’s history, current events, awards, and upcoming shows.

PROGRAMS PROVIDED Opened Captioning Performance Sponsored in partnership through TDF (Theatre Development Fund).

ELEVATORS Elevators are located at the north end of each lobby. The elevators are available during all performances and make it possible to access each lobby without the use of stairs. Patrons should be aware that access to upper seating areas do involve stairs.

PARKING Parking is available within a four-block radius in all directions of the Fox Theatre. Advanced reserved parking is available for sale at the Fox Ticket Office or by calling 855-285-8499. The Fox Theatre assumes no responsibility for vehicles parked in any of the privately owned parking lots operating in the Fox Theatre district.

PERFORMANCE NOTES All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket in order to be admitted to the theatre. Not all events are suitable for children.

Infants will not be admitted to adult programs/performances. Parents will be asked to remove children who create a disturbance.

Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the management, in conjunction with the wishes of the producers.

Please turn off all pagers and cell phones prior to the beginning of each performance.

Camera and recording devices are strictly prohibited.

ETIQUETTE 1. Please arrive early. Latecomers may not be seated until intermission.

2. Take care of personal needs (drinks of water or restroom) before the performance begins.

3. Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. We encourage you to share your experience at the Fox via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting.

4. Most shows do not allow photography of any kind.

Flash photography inside the theatre is never allowed as it is a distraction to those around you and a danger to the performers.

5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point.

6. Dear Lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of the people behind you. Please consider the people that will be seated behind you when choosing whether or not to wear a hat or what hair style you choose.

7. Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artist or show.

8. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag.

9. Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic.

10. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you.

11. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. Wait until it is over and then exit with the rest of the audience.

HIGH MUSEUM OF ART Atlanta’s art oasis is a cool, white spiral in the midst of manic Midtown. NATIONAL CENTER FOR CIVIL AND HUMAN RIGHTS This 43,000-sq. ft. mecca of human struggle and triumph – past and present – will soon celebrate its first anniversary in downtown Atlanta.

OAKLAND CEMETERY A shining example of the rural garden cemetery movement of the 19th century. This rambling 6-acre green space serves as a historic cemetery and public park. Atlantans once took Sunday carriage rides through Oakland; visitors now meander on foot through lush gardens and memorial monuments in distinct architecture styles. PIEDMONT PARK These 189 acres in Midtown, with rolling hills, grassy meadows and Lake Clara Meer, are among the most popular places around for dates, strolls, jogging, games of Frisbee, picnicking and worshiping the sun. Once a late 1800s racing ground for horse enthusiasts, the park is now one of the most photographed bits of the city, with panoramic skyscraper views over the tree line. The park has a swimming pool, wetlands, basketball courts, an athletic oval and popular summer concerts and festivals. Off 10th Street and Monroe Avenue, beside the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Stone Mountain is a blend of new and old, featuring the world’s largest bas-relief carving of Confederate figures Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, and theme parks with family-friendly activities. Hike the mile-long trail up the mountain and catch the Skyride down for an aerial view. Explore 3,200-plus acres of nature, which include walking paths, camping, paddleboats and hiking. Revisit the past by making candles or window-shopping in the themed re-created

FOX FUN FACTS FRIENDS PROGRAM REVAMPED: MEMBERSHIP HAS IT REWARDS The Fox Theatre recently announced a revamped Friends of the Fox program, which gives people a chance to support the arts in Atlanta and in communities throughout Georgia. The new membership program is a way to get involved with the Fox and support the Fox Theatre Institute (FTI), the theater’s community engagement arm.

Throughout Georgia, historic theaters like the Fox are facing equally grim fates, says Allan C. Vella, the Fox Theatre’s president and CEO. Time and technology have taken their toll on the great movie palaces of the last century, making massive suburban multiplexes the new norm.

But those historic theaters, he says, stand as monuments to an age of architectural splendor, reminders of a time when their marquees lit up Main Street and brought entire communities together.

The FTI’s goal is to rescue, restore and revitalize the historic theaters that serve as a touchstone for their communities and to remind people of the impact theater restoration has on struggling downtown districts.

Efforts so far have included the theater organ at the Grand Theatre in Fitzgerald, the Grand Lobby at the Mars Theatre in Springfield, the marquee at the Holly Theatre in Dahlonega and more.

Friends memberships last one year and are partially tax-deductible.
