Zero Euthanasia
Gives Homeless Pets a Second Chance Furkids is one of a kind. The Georgia-based organization runs the only nokill, cage-free shelter in the Southeast for rescued cats, as well as Sadie’s Place, a no-kill shelter for dogs. It also is the only area shelter where children of all ages can volunteer and learn about caring for animals. “It’s a wonderful feeling seeing families volunteering and children experiencing the joy of interacting with animals,” says Samantha (Sam) Shelton, who founded the non-profit in 2001. The organization has come a long way since Shelton found a mother cat and her kittens in her backyard. The local shelter told her that if she brought them in, they would be euthanized due to lack of space. “That was not OK with me; I knew I had to do something. That effort to save that cat and her kittens’ lives turned into my life’s work and passion. I found my calling that day.” And, what a calling it is. Last year, Furkids rescued 5,040 homeless animals, adopted out 3,695 into loving homes with another 497 sent to northern shelters to be adopted there. They scour local shelters in all 159 counties in the state for animals on the euthanasia list and rescue them. Since its opening, Furkids has saved tens of thousands of animals. “We focus on the ones that are on the ‘list’. We take in FIV [feline immunodeficiency virus] cats, heartworm-positive dogs and those with trauma or survived horrific situations.”
To qualify as a “no-kill shelter,” 80 percent of the animals must be saved, meaning that up to 20 percent can be euthanized. Not at Furkids. They are a 100 percent no-kill shelter. Some animals, like Scout, a mixed breed dog, have been with them for years waiting for adoption. Furkids is very creative in expanding its reach into the community with fundraising events as well as running thrift stores in four metro locations (Johns Creek, Marietta, Peachtree Corners/Norcross and Lawrenceville). However, she is particularly thrilled about the latest effort, an event facility, Shiloh Gardens at Union Hill, that will open in late June. The property, the former home of Wakoola Water Gardens, consists of nine acres in south Forsyth County with two buildings and gorgeous water features. “I saw it and knew we were home,” Shelton says. “It’s a beautiful destination for the community to come and connect with the animals in a peaceful setting and enjoy nature.” The event center has a kitchen for caterers and seating for 284; more for a standing cocktail event. “We’re bringing in the community for parties, weddings, events and meetings. It’s a new source of revenue that comes back to benefit our animals,” she says.
A Joy That Transcends
“Our connection with animals runs deep and it’s a good opportunity to experience that at a young age. We expose everyone—but especially children—to our animals and explain that animals are individuals, and some come with emotional baggage. They’ve been abused, scarred and they need love. It’s a great way to teach compassion,” she says. “Loving and caring for an animal is a joy that transcends any social, economic, political, race or gender barriers. We want all animals to have a chance at a happy life.”

COCA-COLA FILM FESTIVAL OPENS WITH THE GODFATHER FOR THOSE OF YOU SHOUTING, “ENCORE!” AT THE “Here’s an offer you can’t refuse—The 2022 Coca-Cola Summer END OF TONIGHT’S PERFORMANCE, WE’VE ROUNDED Film Festival, which starts off appropriately with The Godfather on UP EVEN MORE SHOWS TO SEE AROUND ATLANTA! June 17. Francis Ford Coppola’s Oscar-winner, celebrating its 50th anniversary, starts off a wonderful summer film festival at the Fox Theatre with something for every movie lover. For the younger ones, there is “Saturday Morning Cartoons.” Adults and older kids will love the classics such as Casablanca (celebrating its 80th anniversary), Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark, Coco and Saturday Night Fever (can you believe it was 45 years ago?). The Marquee Club will be available except for the “Saturday Morning Cartoons”, but is rounding out the festival’s schedule with a disco-themed party featuring a live DJ 9:30 to 11:30 p.m. after the movie. Not everyone can be John Travolta, but why not give it a try and come dressed in your best outfit for doing the Hustle! The party is $50 per person. Those who want to extend the movie-going experience can take exclusive Movie Tours prior to select film showings. Guests will be guided through the projection booth, screening room, celebrity dressing rooms and—the best part—setting foot on the iconic Fox Theatre stage. All film festival dates offer a 60-minute movie tour that starts two hours prior to each film. Cost for this behind-the-scenes experience is $15. foxtheatre.org
TRUE COLORS PRESENTS FANNIE Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company explores the music and life of Fannie Lou Hamer, a daughter of a Mississippi sharecropper who became a voting and women’s rights activist as well as a leader in the Civil Rights movement. She was co-founder of the Freedom Democratic Party as well as the National Women’s Political Caucus. She used spiritual hymnals to help get her message across, but she also was threatened and assaulted by racists while trying to register people to vote. The play Fannie The Music and Life of Fannie Lou Hamer will be performed at the Southwest Arts Center June 14 - July 10. truecolorstheatre.org
FACE YOUR FEARS WITH MUSIC That’s the message for youngsters from the reggae master Bob Marley. The musical play Three Little Birds tells the story of Ziggy, who wants to enjoy life and play in the sun. But he’s fearful. Well, he’s fearful of everything—evil spirits, tropical storms and even bandits. With the help of his feathered friends—in six-part harmony no less—he learns to face his fears and is reminded that “Every little thing gonna’ be alright!” Based on a story by Cedella and music and lyrics by Marley, the play will run at the Synchronicity Theatre in Peachtree Pointe June 3-26. Try going on a Friday; you can ditch “theatre” clothes and wear pajamas! synchrotheatre.com

By the end of 2021, with 23 productions currently produced or licensed, a Disney musical will be performed professionally somewhere on the planet virtually every hour of the day. A brand-new production of Beauty and the Beast, reimagined by members of the original Broadway creative team – led by Matt West – is currently on tour throughout the UK and Ireland. In November 1997, Disney opened The Lion King, which received six 1998 Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Director, Julie Taymor, who became the first woman in Broadway history to the win the award. Approaching 24 landmark years on Broadway, it has welcomed 110 million visitors worldwide to date and, by the end of 2021, will be seen in 10 productions worldwide. Having played 21 countries on every continent except Antarctica, The Lion King’s worldwide gross exceeds that of any film, Broadway show or other entertainment title in box office history. Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida opened on Broadway next, winning four 2000 Tony Awards. It was followed by Mary Poppins, a co-production with Cameron Mackintosh, which opened in London in 2004 and went on to enjoy a six-year Tony-winning Broadway run. The show continues its Olivier award-winning London return at its original home at the Prince Edward Theatre. Tarzan®, which opened on Broadway in 2006, went on to become an international hit with an award-winning production enjoying

FOG DELAYED STONES, BETTE MIDLER’S GHOST AND TURNING THE STAGE INTO AN ICE RINK
• The Rolling Stones have performed at the Fox twice, to date. In June 1978, the show was first billed as “the Cockroaches,” so as not to reveal too early the true identity of the performers. • The Stones next appeared Oct. 26, 1981, playing for a standingroom-only crowd. As history has it, the bandmates traveled to Savannah for a day-trip and, due to dense fog in Atlanta, their return flight was rerouted to Macon. The show began 90 minutes late. • Bette Midler was scheduled for a three-night gig in February 1983. According to longtime Atlanta concert promoter Alex Cooley
(who died in 2016), when she reached her dressing room she claimed that someone had died there, that it was haunted and she would not perform. The Divine Miss M was moved to another dressing room and, apparently content enough, agreed to go onstage. • On New Year’s Day 2005, Broadway on Ice ice-skating pros Nancy Kerrigan and Rudy Galindo took to the stage, along with Broadway’s Leslie Uggams (a Tony Award winner for Hallelujah, Baby!). Creating an impromptu ice rink was an overnight process that called for spraying the stage with water and quickly freezing it. Again and again and again.

Atlanta’s Fox Theatre has played host to many world-renowned artists, from the Rolling Stones and Lynyrd Skynyrd, to Bette Midler and Widespread Panic. In July 1976, in fact, Lynyrd Skynyrd performed for three consecutive nights, recording the album One More From the Road and donating $5,000 toward the Save the Fox campaign. In February 1993, the band played another three nights, one of which was broadcast on pay-per-view television. Here are a few other rockin’ fun facts:
