This rhythmic play explores the universal idea that true beauty is found within. Adapted from a Zambian folk tale, this story traces Blackbird’s courageous journey to share his truth that “color on the outside is not what’s on the inside.” Featuring an original jazzy score and inventive creative movement, Beautiful Blackbird brings Ashley Bryan’s inspired artwork to life in visceral and moving ways. Beautiful Blackbird is presented in conjunction with the High Museum of Art exhibition Painter and Poet: The Wonderful World of Ashley Bryan.

Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Music for the Very Young: Music Around the World Music of North America Sept. 16 – Nov. 19 Bring your little ones along and set off on a journey to discover the music of North America. The Jazz Tree From Its Roots to Its Limbs Performance by Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Sextet From its roots in New Orleans to its branches in cities such as Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh and New York, jazz is uniquely identified by its place of origin, its stylistic transitions and the continued thirst for exploration. The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Sextet will pay special musical homage to those who laid the foundation, including Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet, and the continuing evolution by such musicians as Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and many more….

2 & 3 PM, MEMORIAL ARTS BUILDING, THIRD LEVEL, CIRCLE ROOM The Great Silent Grandmother Gathering Directed by Patrick McColery Anyone who is a grandmother, has a grandmother, loves a grandmother or believes in the power of grandmothers should experience this very special free performance of The Great Silent Grandmother Gathering, written by Sharon Mehdi and featuring Pearl Cleage, Alliance Theatre Mellon Playwright in Residence, and an all-Atlanta cast of grandmothers.

Participate in the Art of Life with Lenbrook Lenbrook Life Plan Community participants, under the guidance of Rosemary Newcott, the Alliance Theatre’s Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth & Families, will join together with members of the community to create an intergenerational, interpretive performance showing how we are all connected and are all a part of the bigger picture of life.
