SARAH ELLIS HELPS BRING THE CATSKILLS TO CHARLOTTE STORY BY
Keith Loria Sarah Ellis grew up in a three-stoplight Wisconsin town with two band directors for parents, filling her childhood with music, dance, theatre and sports. She earned a BFA in musical theatre from Penn State University, where she received the Margaret “Peg” French Award for Undergraduate Theatre, then moved to New York City to start her professional career. That’s included roles Off-Broadway, regionally and parts in three national tours. Her latest role is philandering wife Vivian Pressman in Dirty Dancing. For Ellis, Dirty Dancing is one of those movies that was always around. She remembers the classic 1987 film being a mainstay on cable television. “I feel like it was always on when I was a kid,” she said. “Like after school I would come home and I would see Dirty Dancing. I remember thinking how handsome Patrick Swayze was and just really loving the dancing specifically, and how beautifully it was captured.” The movie is set in the 1960s and follows Frances (Baby) Houseman (played by Jennifer Grey), as she spends a family vacation at Kellerman’s

Mountain House in the Catskills, where she falls in love with Johnny (played by Swayze). It was a smash that helped make a star out of Swayze, featured the hit song “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” and Sarah Ellis captivated audiences with its somewhat risqué dancing. Ellis is excited to bring the musical version of the show to the Blumenthal Arts Center. A SONG OF HER OWN “I actually didn’t know the movie extremely well before I started rehearsals, but I have attempted the Dirty Dancing lift several times in my lifetime,” Ellis said. “And obviously I’ve fallen in love with the movie and the script and the incredible dancing.” She originally auditioned to be the understudy for Marjorie (Frances’ mother) and ended up getting cast as Vivian. Great news, but she did have one question. “I said, ‘Who’s Vivian?’ And then I got to rehearsal and realized, ‘Oh, she’s the cougar, she’s the bungalow bunny,’” Ellis said. “I hadn’t done anything to audition for that part, but I think the casting team knew what I could do and they were like, ‘She’ll be fine playing this role.’ So this role of Vivian has kind of morphed as we’ve been in rehearsal. It started off as just a few lines, and as we got more into the story, the director kept giving me more to do, and eventually they put in a song for me.” That song comes at the beginning of Act 2 when Vivian auditions for Kellerman’s annual talent showcase by singing “Blame It on the Bossa Nova.” “I get backup dancers and it’s so fun,” Ellis said. “It’s basically about her love for Johnny and it’s really, really fun and it kicks off Act II really beautifully. It gets us back into this world. It’s been so fun to create this role and kind of reimagine Vivian in a musical world.” BALANCING OLD AND NEW While Dirty Dancing is a well-known property, and audiences are certainly going to expect to experience some of their favorite memories from the movie, Ellis said she and the cast are able to bring their own talents to each part. That’s due to the director, Lonny Price, who played Neil Kellerman in the movie and whose resume as a director includes Broadway shows and winning Emmys for his television work. As an actor, Price’s major Broadway credit was creating the role of Charley Kringas in the original production of Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along. “He has been so wonderful in letting us all bring ourselves to the pieces,” Ellis said. “We all know we’re recreating this iconic property, but he hired us all because we bring ourselves and we bring our version of what we think

this script is, while still maintaining the integrity of the movie itself. We strike this beautiful balance of old and new, so audiences are going to come to experience what they know and love and then be delighted by things that are new.” WHAT MAKES THE AUDIENCE CHEER Dirty Dancing: The Musical marks a return to the Blumenthal for Ellis, who performed here last year in the musical, Austen’s Pride. And getting a chance to perform in Charlotte is always special for her. “I have a ton of family in Charlotte, and that was really special because they hadn’t seen me perform in years,” she said. “So, I had a bunch of family come and see me do my thing, and I’m really excited for them to come see this show.” Based on the reactions of audiences that have seen Dirty Dancing: The Musical, Ellis expects her family and everyone at the Blumenthal to thoroughly enjoy the show. “I tell you, when you hear the line, ‘Nobody puts baby in a corner,’ it is stadium-level cheers,” she said. “There are just so many iconic moments that when they’re said, the audience participates and gets really excited. They feel like they’re at Kellerman’s. It’s really incredible.”

Her second novel, Ex-Lover, about sexual obsession, was

published by Random House. She has worked on a variety of film projects, including the final script revision of Sister Act. She then wrote and directed Let It Be Me, which starred Patrick Stewart, Leslie Caron, Campbell Scott and Jennifer Beals. Her most famous project was one of the most successful independent films of all time—Dirty Dancing, which she wrote and co-produced. In 2004, she wrote and produced Dirty Dancing—The Classic Story on Stage, which premiered in Sydney, Australia. Since opening, Dirty Dancing—The Classic Story on Stage has played in 22 countries with 35 productions. The production has broken box office records around the world, including Germany, where it achieved the highest advance in European history, and the West End, where it opened in 2006 with a record-breaking £15 million advance. The show was a complete sell-out for the first six months and went on to become the longest-running show in the history of the Aldwych Theatre. The show has become a worldwide phenomenon over the last 21 years, with productions in markets as diverse as Hong Kong, Singapore, Sweden, Holland, South Africa, Mexico and throughout Europe, as well as in North America (U.S. tour and a Canadian production). The show will return to London in 2026. Ms. Bergstein has just completed a collection of stories from her life. She is currently putting final touches on a new stage musical set a few years following Dirty Dancing. The era witnessed musicians like Paul McCartney, inspired by Elvis Presley, in turn inspiring young people and propelling them into a new world to find their own love, passion and honor. The musical centers around young Americans who face a moral crisis of their beloved country and seek to reconcile and embrace what it means to be American. LONNY PRICE (Director) has been a consistent presence on and off Broadway as a director, writer and actor for more than 40 years. As a performer, he made his Broadway debut in 1981 at the age of 22 in The Survivor and later that year starred as Charley Kringas in Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along. Viola Van Horn has a secret to share... in Broadway’s Death Becomes Her.
explore experience discover
The show opens with Viola Van Horn and her group of immortals sharing “a secret you would die for” by offering the audience a magic potion that grants eternal beauty and perfection (“If You Want Perfection”). Vain and self-absorbed actress Madeline Ashton performs in the Broadway show Me! Me! Me! (“For the Gaze”). She is visited by her old friend and struggling writer Helen Sharp, whom she frequently belittles and insults for her own amusement. However, Helen has one-upped Madeline by revealing she is engaged to famed plastic surgeon, Ernest Menville, and relishes the opportunity to get back at her frenemy (“That Was Then, This is Now”). Madeline invites the two over to her home, where she seduces Ernest (“Tell Me, Ernest”), steals him from Helen and ends up marrying him (“Madeline Ashton’s Intimate Wedding Extravaganza”), with Ernest promising during the wedding to stay “til death do us part” (“Ernest’s Real Vows”). Helen has a psychotic break and is forcibly committed to a mental hospital, where she obsesses over killing Madeline (“Madeline”).
