When lineman Gregory Porter sustained a careerending injury at San Diego State University, football’s loss became the music world’s gain.

The one-time street-ministry singer returned to his musical roots to find a new destiny as an acclaimed jazz singer. His music career currently includes multiple albums, two Grammy Awards, a turn on Broadway, and performances with musical mentors like Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan, and Stevie Wonder.

Porter has also completed tour after tour, including the one that will bring him to the Cobb Energy Centre on February 20 as part of a 10-city itinerary with powerhouse R&B/soul queen Ledisi.

“I remember at the time being quite devastated by that injury, by the pain of losing that part of my life,” he says. “I started hanging out in jazz clubs as a way to find a new identity. It wasn’t even to perform there, but to listen and to learn a new way to express myself. Jazz musicians started to become my friends as opposed to the quarterbacks and linebackers I had been friends with before.”

Porter’s warm, intimate baritone calls Nat King Cole to mind, so it’s no surprise to learn that Porter grew up listening to Cole’s records in his mother’s house back in Bakersfield, California.

Additionally, Porter spent much of his childhood singing on the streets when his mother took her preaching beyond church walls.

“We always had a microphone and a PA system,” he recalls. “My mother had an outreach ministry in the worst parts of town, and I’d be out there singing on the streets with her.”

It was invaluable training, singing to audiences of people the world had either abused or forgotten, but young Gregory didn’t always appreciate the lessons.

“I really hated it at times,” he said. “It would be nine o’clock in the morning and I’m out there singing on the sidewalk. But I cherish it now, these beautiful memories. I appreciate the fact that my first audiences were the people who really needed to hear the music.”

Although Porter has since sung all over the world, the sidewalks of Bakersfield are still part of his musical identity, peeking out in the song “Take Me to the Alley,” from the album by the same name that garnered Porter his second Grammy Award for best jazz vocal album in 2016.

The song, which he wrote, is a reflection on Jesus’ own street ministry: “They will be surprised when they hear him say / Take me to the alley / Take me to the afflicted ones / Take me to the lonely ones that somehow lost their way.”

Porter’s pairing with Ledisi sprang from “a mutual respect as artists,” he says. “Ledisi has always been on my short list of people I would love to sing with.

We worked together on a TV show for Quincy Jones, and we got a good response to that, so we thought we needed to do something together.

“She has a wonderful voice and can sing anything from R&B to classical and jazz. But she has gospel roots like I do. We’re like-minded. We’re both emotive singers.”

Concert-goers will hear songs from Porter’s earlier albums, including Liquid Gospel and Take Me to the Alley, along with Water, Be Good and Nat King Cole and Me, all nominated for Grammys. Also on the program are selections from Porter’s newest album, All Rise, debuting in April.

The idea sprang from his own experiences doing interviews, he says. “I would be having a good conversation and realized that I’m doing it for

someone else’s public. So, why not have my own conversations with people who have something to say as well? They aren’t always in my field, but that can be cool. I wanted those conversations to be longer-form and accessible to fans.”

Even death can’t stop him from performing with people he admires. “I used to say I would love to sing with Nat King Cole. Then Capital Records says they’re doing a new series of compilation songs and adding new artists, so I was able to do a recording of me singing ‘The Girl from Ipanema’ with him.”

You might say he’s living his bucket list right now.

“It’s all falling into place,” he says. “Every day I get the opportunity to tick off boxes of my dreams coming true.”

The Atlanta Opera begins 2020 with Salome, a psychological thriller draped in lust, incest, power, and seduction. Salome is the twisted tale of a depraved tyrant, his bewitching stepdaughter, and her unholy infatuation with John the Baptist. First adapted from the Gospel of Mark to the world’s stage

by Oscar Wilde, this opera scandalized the music world into the 1930s, and continues to captivate with its sublimely rich musical tapestries by Richard Strauss. Salome is performed in German with English supertitles.

HEART/BEAT February 7 - 15

Heart/Beat presents three works featuring choreography by Alexander Ekman, Lar Lubovitch, and Dwight Rhoden. Ekman’s Tuplet creates an immersive, multisensory experience that uses dancers’ bodies as percussion instruments. Lubovitch’s Elemental Brubeck, previously performed at the San Francisco Ballet, channels the iconic style of Dave Brubeck’s rhythmically complex music. Rhoden’s world premiere piece is a collaborative new work set to music that expresses the heart and soul of the African-American experience. Sweeping rhythms intertwine these three works making their Atlanta Ballet debut.

Piero Barone, Gianluca Ginoble, and Ignazio Boschetto of Il Volo began their careers at very young ages in 2009. The music created by their three unique voices has crossed national borders, sold millions of records, and climbed rankings worldwide. In celebration of their 10-year anniversary, the group has embarked on a world tour in conjunction with the global release of their new album 10 Years – The Best of.
