WICKED BY THE NUMBERS: BROADWAY’S EMERALD EMPIRE OF BUBBLES, HAUTE COUTURE AND GREEN PAINT The fourth longest-running musical in Broadway history continues to defy gravity with spellbinding design and decades of star turns STORY BY

Jonah de Forest Wicked is the ultimate Broadway blockbuster: a behemoth feat of stagecraft that has kept audiences enrapt for over 22 years. In fact, Wicked is the fourth longest-running musical in Broadway history and the third longest-running production currently on the Great White Way. Set in the fantastical world of Oz, Wicked explores the fated friendship of two witches— one blonde and beloved, the other green and woefully misunderstood—before a certain farm girl drops into town. Follow us along the Yellow Brick Road as we break down Wicked by the numbers, from bubble fluid and green body paint to hand-sewn sequins and dry ice. Talk about popular. Wicked has bewitched over 75 million audience members across more than 130 cities in 16 countries, spanning six different languages. Do yourself a favor and listen to “No One Mourns the Wicked” in German (or rather, “Keiner weint um Hexen,” which directly translates to: “No One Weeps for Witches”). Wicked is based on Gregory Maguire’s sprawling fantasy novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which was initially published in 1995 and is the first of four books in The Wicked Years series. Maguire has also authored a number of spin-offs and prequels, as well as a standalone folktale anthology. Cumulatively, Maguire’s extended Wicked universe has sold more than 10 million copies. Wicked received 10 Tony nominations and won three: Best Leading Actress in a Musical for the production’s original Elphaba, Idina Menzel, Best Scenic Design for Eugene Lee and Best Costume Design for Susan Hilferty’s swankified creations. In 2024, Wicked found its way to the big screen and racked up $764 million at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing film adaptation of a Broadway musical. The second installment, Wicked: For Good, brought in an additional $541 million—bringing the total global box office for the films to over $1.3 billion. There have been 38 principal performers who have defied gravity as Elphaba on Broadway. Notable alumni include Shoshana Bean, Stephanie J. Block, Ana Gasteyer, Lindsay Mendez, Jessica Vosk, Mandy Gonzalez and Eden Espinosa. It takes Broadway’s current Elphaba, Keri René Fuller, 30 minutes to be greenified. Each year, Wicked’s makeup department goes through about 20 palettes of MAC Chromacake in Elphaba’s signature shade, Landscape Green. Elphaba’s spellbinding Act 2 dress is made up of 15 to 20 different fabrics on the bodice, while the skirt uses 290 yards of bias cut ruffle. Wicked’s longtime wardrobe supervisor Alyce Gilbert notes that

this particular garment “pushes the border of ‘big black witch dress’ with the multiple fabric choices, quilting and varying shades of black, grays and small accent colors.” She adds: “The design of the skirt, which gives each Elphaba room from the bottom to be very physically active but has a smoothness from the waist that doesn’t make them look bulky above the fullness, is very impressive. The many Elphabas over the years have all looked special in that dress, although they were many different heights and proportions.” Seventy-six pointed hats have been used throughout Wicked’s Broadway run. Thirty-four principal performers have enchanted Broadway as Glinda the Good. Kristin Chenoweth “toss toss”-ed her way into theater history when she originated the part, which was written with her in mind. The Good Witch coven also includes Megan Hilty, Annaleigh Ashford, Laura Bell Bundy, McKenzie Kurtz, Kara Lindsay and the production’s current reigning bubble benefactor, Emma Flynn. Oh my goodness! The actress playing Glinda begins the show 30 feet above the stage, and spends between three and four minutes suspended in the air before descending upon Munchkinland for her grand entrance. Roughly 138 gallons of bubble fluid have been used since Wicked opened at the Gershwin Theatre in 2003. Glinda’s blue bubble gown is adorned with 68,200 hand-sewn sequins and weighs 15 pounds. Is there such a thing as too many shoes? Witch, please! Glinda has 23 pairs of heels on display in her Shiz dorm room. Glinda sports five headpieces throughout the show. There are roughly 500 to 600 gemstones per tiara that are set and silver plated. Nearly 350 costumes are currently housed at the Gershwin. There are 238 costume changes from top of show to curtain call. Six costume shops, four shoemakers across four different countries (Spain, Italy, Nova Scotia and the United States) and six milliners are responsible for making the Ozmopolitan costumes used in Wicked. There are 64 wigs worn on stage per show, with over 200 wigs housed in the Gershwin that are ready to be used at a moment’s notice. This shiz is bananas! There are around 30 monkey masks housed backstage. Wicked uses 144 moving lights, 4,000 twinkle lights and 1,086 controlled fixtures. Roughly 3,546,000 pounds of dry ice have been used throughout the Broadway run of Wicked, with 400 pounds used per performance. The set design for Wicked is inspired by the Time Dragon Clock, a prophetic piece of machinery that plays a prominent role in Maguire’s novel. One of the most iconic features of this set is a giant dragon fixture that looms over the stage. The dragon is a pulley system operated by two carpenters, with one moving its head and the other moving its wings. The word “Wicked” is used 42 times in the show. Now that we’ve broken down the magic behind the curtain, your trip to Oz awaits! Grab a broomstick and make your way to the National Tour of Wicked to experience what makes the show so wonderful. We assure you, there’s no place like it.

IN INGRID MICHAELSON AND BEKAH BRUNSTETTER’S HANDS, THE NOTEBOOK ISN’T JUST ABOUT A MEMORY — IT BECOMES ONE The composer-lyricist and book writer of the Broadway musical delve into their vision of the beloved romance. STORY BY

Ruthie Fierberg The first moment that composer-lyricist Ingrid Michaelson musicalized for The Notebook is when the character of Older Allie, who has dementia, remembers. “I felt like that was such a moment that sang, and so that’s where my brain went first,” Michaelson told Broadway News. Given the Notebook’s prominence in popular culture—be it the original bestselling novel by Nicholas Sparks or the movie adaptation starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams—there are numerous places where one’s brain could go first. It could have been the first time Allie and Noah meet, or the moment when they see each other again after years of silence, or the iconic scene in the rain. But it is telling that Michaelson’s impulse fixated on memory. The Notebook has always been about reflection. Speaking to an elderly woman with dementia, an old man reads the story of a love between two sweethearts, Allie and Noah. The beauty is: That old man is Noah and that old woman is Allie. In previous iterations, the emphasis is on the love story itself—not the reading of it. But Michaelson and book writer Bekah Brunstetter have chosen to balance their musical version by dividing the story into three stages of Noah and Allie’s lives (younger,

10 | encore middle and older) and dedicating significant attention to the older phase and what it means to deal with memory loss. In fact, Michaelson and Brunstetter, facilitated by directors Michael Greif and Schele Williams and choreographer Katie Spelman, endeavored to conjure the experience of memory onstage. “I wanted the sound of the music and the songs to live in this space that they all could inhabit together and float out of time and space—if that makes sense,” said Michaelson. Indeed, her Notebook score plays more like a contiguous soundscape than individual songs. With that, Michaelson’s music and lyrics seemingly serve the dual purposes of what a musical score does (i.e., create character, move plot, expand emotional beats) and what a film score does (set mood, establish emotional tonality). And that ethereal quality which Michaelson described parallels memory itself. In that vein, Michaelson dabbles with echoes of her own music and the musical themes embedded in her compositions. “We’re playing with memory here, so to have [elements] come back and fragments of other songs appear in other moments—that’s Older Allie’s journey. It was a conscious choice.” That choice also reflects in Brunstetter’s script. Different from previous iterations of The Notebook, Brunstetter’s book skips ahead in the lovers’ story and later rewinds. “We liked the nonlinear part of the story, because that does, in some ways, mirror what Older Allie is going through,” Brunstetter said. “The idea of taking these moments and sort of scrambling them up [felt like] how memory really works: different things hit you at different moments,” Michaelson added. “That also helps to put us all in the space that Older Allie might be sitting in, which is: trying to piece things together.” Brunstetter’s book isn’t without structure and dramatic arc (“There is an order and a calm to it,” she said), but leaning into this nonlinear nature—this followable fragmentation — is what attracted Brunstetter to writing the musical in the first place. She heard three of Michaelson’s early songs and jumped on board. “It felt innately theatrical,” Brunstetter said of Michaelson’s take. “It didn’t feel [like] it would need to be a typical movie musical adaptation.” That’s another key to the Notebook musical: It is not the film on a stage. The characters and their emotions are all there. But the words, like the structure, are new. “If we just took iconic lines from the movie and put them in the musical, we would be limiting ourselves and not allowing it to be a piece of musical theater,” said Brunstetter. Still, Brunstetter and Michaelson wanted to deliver an experience as soulful and affecting as its predecessors. “That’s been a constant balance for us,” Brunstetter continued. “We love the book. We love the movie. Giving the fans of the book and the movie enough to delight in that familiarity of, ‘Oh, there’s that moment I love,’ while also building upon it and expanding it [was key].” Brunstetter and Michaelson’s Notebook is still a sweeping, epic romance—but the overarching idea of memory and its theatricalization allowed for the expansion they sought. “We really wanted to have people think about their life and the choices they’ve made, even more so than the love story,” said Michaelson. “How do you want to live your days, these precious days that we get? Obviously the romantic part of it is huge, but there’s also aging, loss, what happens after loss, legacy.” In other words: What will you remember, and what will be worth remembering? Michaelson and Brunstetter hope that’s what audiences will consider when they see The Notebook. “We hope that people connect, think of their family members, their own life choices, find themselves in it in some way, and then ultimately feel because they’re recognizing themselves and their life in the piece,” said Brunstetter. “I think that’s the goal.”

The Notebook is scheduled to come to Emerson Colonial Theatre starting December 8, 2026. For more in-depth interviews, up-to-date news and show reviews on Broadway, visit BroadwayNews.com.

ABOUT THE THEATER Welcome to New England’s premier performing arts theater, the Citizens Opera House. As you settle in to enjoy the show, take a few moments to appreciate the splendid design and craftsmanship surrounding you. The exceptional beauty of the theater is rooted in its equally exceptional history. The Citizens Opera House (originally known as the B. F. Keith Memorial Theatre) is one of the finest examples of the vaudeville circuit palace at the pinnacle of its development. Designed in a combination of French and Italian styles by Thomas White Lamb, one of the foremost theater architects of his day, it was erected under the close personal supervision of Edward Franklin Albee (1857–1930 and great-grandfather of the playwright of the same name) to memorialize his late partner, Benjamin Franklin Keith (1846–1914). Because it was constructed as a memorial and tribute to vaudeville’s greatest impresario, it was built with a degree of luxury in its appointments that is almost unrivalled. When the theater opened on October 29, 1928, the opening was attended by many theatrical luminaries, among them George M. Cohan and Al Jolson. Former Mayor James Michael Curley was also a guest of honor. The Radio-Keith-Orpheum organization which by that time owned the theater was represented by the host of that great occasion, R. K. O. Board Chairman Joseph P. Kennedy. The theater presented vaudeville for only a year before featuring first-run films for the ensuing decades. In 1965 Sack Theatres purchased the B. F. Keith Memorial Theatre from R. K. O. The new owners refurbished the building, making great efforts to restore its opulent beauty, and renamed it the Savoy Theatre. In 1978 the theater was bought by the Opera Company of Boston. The name of the theater was then changed from Savoy to the Boston Opera House. Under the direction of the renowned opera impresario Sarah Caldwell, the Boston Opera

House hosted some of the most acclaimed stagings of opera performances in the modern era. Unfortunately, the costs of maintaining the theater outstripped the ability of the Company to keep up. As tax and utility bills went unpaid, the theater began to suffer deterioration. The Company closed the theater in 1991 and the deterioration accelerated at a sad and alarming rate. In 1995, the Boston Opera House was placed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 11 Most Endangered Buildings list. Under the subsequent ownership of Clear Channel Communications, and with the assistance of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, the necessary building permits were issued in late 2002 and work to completely renovate and restore the Citizens Opera House commenced. In order to accommodate the needs of large Broadway touring productions, the old stagehouse and attached dressing rooms were completely demolished to make way for a larger, state-of-the-art stagehouse and new dressing rooms. Meanwhile, everything between the proscenium wall of the stage and the Washington Street facade was carefully restored. A rare assembly of old-world craftsmanship and highlyskilled trades went to work restoring sculptural plaster, gold leaf finishes, Carrara marble, paintings and tapestries, grand staircases, chandeliers, walnut and oak paneling. The total cost of the restoration exceeded $50 million. In September 2009, the Citizens Opera House officially entered yet another phase in its storied history. Local businessmen Don Law and David Mugar joined forces to purchase the Citizens Opera House from Live Nation, returning the theater to local ownership for the first time in decades. The same month, Boston Ballet launched its first full season with the Citizens Opera House as its new home, and Broadway In Boston continues to present the best of touring Broadway on this storied stage.
