CHOREOGRAPHER SONYA TAYEH ON EXPRESSING IMPOSSIBLE LOVE AND HER RAVISHING MOULIN ROUGE! DANCERS
STORY BY Paul Wontorek
Sonya Tayeh put a shot of adrenaline in the theater season with her electrifying choreography for Moulin Rouge! The deliciously over-the-top musical extravaganza marks the Broadway debut for the dance visionary, who has previously worked with pop stars like Madonna, Miley Cyrus and Florence and the Machine, as well as created Emmy-nominated performances for TV’s “So You Think You Can Dance.” Broadway.com contributor Matthew Murphy recently gathered Tayeh and members of her high-energy Moulin Rouge! ensemble for a photo session to show off their moves. Before the shoot, we sat down with the in-demand theatermaker (who is also prepping the new musical Sing Street Off-Broadway) to hear about her journey from the underground club scene of Detroit to the legit stage.
How does it feel to have this “spectacular spectacular” playing on Broadway? I feel incredible. I feel inspired. I feel amped and charged and I’m just so happy that people are seeing it and seeing the beauty that it is. The love that’s come our way for this magical, humongous show—it’s just an unforgettable experience for me, as my first Broadway experience. It’s really a wild thing.
There was a lot of anticipation for this musical, and expectations have been exceeded. What do you is the lesson here? [Leading lady] Karen Olivo told us that everyone working on the how really loves the film and wanted to take care of it. Was that key? It’s exactly what Karen said. Each collaborator is ambitious, courageous and has a huge imagination, especially [director] Alex Timbers, and every one of us loves the movie. So, you go into a space with all this excitement, like kids in a candy store. And you’re talking: “Remember this scene?” “Remember how you felt?” And we just kept talking, and just kept pushing each other. I feel like because we were at the same heightened place most of the time, the charge was there, and it just kept driving us.
Moulin Rouge! is a movie of movement. I remember seeing it on opening day at the Ziegfeld Theatre, and it was constantly moving in a way that was almost uncomfortable for the audience. As choreographer, you had a lot to jump off from.
I love working in excess. So, it was a relief to have this be my first big Broadway production and to have that sensibility—the high-octane, highly physical energy because that’s where my brain lies. I work in excess first, load on a lot, and then I edit accordingly. I felt very welcome inside of [the project], but also incredibly challenged because it’s a feat of a movie. And I wanted that same feeling on the stage, and to work in all genres [of dance] because there are so many genres of music. Then there are the historical elements—like the can-can and the tango, which could be incorporated, but with my twist inside of it.
It’s so emotionally charged as a story. And then so much of the dance is emotionally charged.
Yeah, we got to express what sexual attention looks like. What impossible love looks like. What secrets look like. All physicalized. I’m really lucky.
How do you gather an ensemble of dancers to tell your story?
I knew when we started building the vocabulary that it was going to be a big responsibility and that I had to find people who had fire and discipline to be able to execute what the show needs. What it needs, not what I wanted. The show really needed all of that excess and that highly physical energy like the movie. It would be a disservice if I didn’t have that heat constantly lifting on the stage. I could tell right away in the audition process, based on the very difficult phrasing that we created, who could handle it and who wanted to. I remember being in that audition—most of [the performers] onstage right now were there—and it was one of the most memorable auditions I’ll ever have. It was phenomenal—just the sheer talent and excellence that they exude. The sweat and that healthy challenge with their comrades and people they’ve worked with before. I had a really visceral experience during that audition process. It must be intense when you’re working so hard with a group of dancers giving their all. But is it also fun? What was the collaboration like in the rehearsal room?
Incredibly challenging, incredibly exhausting but also, yes, so fun. I try to keep it open and loving and respectful of one another, but I also thrive on the challenge. We hired these amazing artists who also thrive on that, so it was fun to see where we all go together and to build off them. I walked in with so much stuff, but they were also able to give so much of themselves. What’s been exciting about this process is finding these little bits of individualized energy inside of the piece. Even when they’re in unison, you still see them. Because all walks of life are welcomed at the Moulin Rouge. I wanted to make sure it wasn’t this overly pristine, formal energy. I wanted it to feel like a world of people, a world of righteous people.
I love this quote from your bio: “Tayeh hardly whispers in the movement she creates, she screams.” Now you’re bringing that energy to a multi-million dollar musical and reaching mainstream audiences. So, what’s it been like screaming on Broadway? [Laughs.] When I found out I got the job, I knew the stakes of the material. I let my ego go all crazy and let the pressure rise and rise and rise. And then I just allowed myself to let it fall. I was hired for a reason, so myself needs to be inside of the piece. It took a while, and a lot of terrible weeks by myself in a space trying to figure it out.
That’s how it starts? You in a room alone with the music?
I got into a space in silence and just start to move around and visualize. I did that first alone with “Roxanne.” The first day, I just kept flashing to all the parts in the movie that struck me, and I just started to speak about it and to move about it. I remember thinking extra hard: “What am I seeing so intensely in my mind right now?” And I wasn’t seeing the actual choreography from the movie, but I remember the slicing sounds and the sweat and the cuts of the shirts in the music. That’s what I wanted that section to look like: those sounds. Then I started choreographing off of that. The word “Broadway” brings expectation and pressure, so I had to really sit back and remember who I am and make sure I worked hard to bring myself to the work. It came from inside of me and inside a really deep, challenging, gruelingly beautiful process.
There is an amazing list of songs assembled for Moulin Rouge! Did you have this ultimate playlist in your phone to find inspiration in the music? [Music supervisor] Justin Levine did such beautiful work on the show—it’s really just phenomenal. Every time I got a demo, I would scream, “Are you serious?! This is what I get to dance to at 10 in the morning? This is what we’re starting with?” I mean, the opening number is almost 12 minutes long and it’s every party song. It really helped alleviate the stress and brings the fun. Even when it would get really grueling and tiring, I remember just closing my eyes or just turning it up a little bit louder and just saying, “Remember what we’re dancing to!” Remember what this is about—community and Bohemian love and life and pride and all of that together. It gave us such freedom.
You were not the little girl in the audience of musicals dreaming of dancing on Broadway. Tell me a little bit about your childhood and family.
I was brought up with two incredible older sisters, who have been my biggest fans and biggest inspirations, and an incredible mom. I was brought up in the underground dance scene in Detroit, where my ears heard soul music really young—Aretha [Franklin], the Temptations— all of it was just generating in my household. And then I dove into the early ’90s—techno music, house music, and watching that music birthed in this incredible city with so much loss and so much history inside of it. Going into incredible abandoned buildings and having dance parties and looking around at a sea of people trying to understand themselves was pretty profound. I carry that everywhere I dance. And I think that, sonically, all of that intensity and darkness and smoke and history and loss is all encompassing inside the work. I knew I wanted to dance—that dance was in my life. It was like a guarantee. I just didn’t know how to get there right away. But I also knew, looking around, that I loved seeing it. I knew. I wanted to make dance. If we took a time machine back to one of those abandoned buildings, were you, like, hitting it hard on the dance floor?
Hard. In just a tube top and those wide legged pants, shoes like this [points to her black boots]. Nothing much has changed actually, minus the tube top! I was by the speaker, tears running down my face, hearing music that made me feel like I was four inches above the floor. And just moving around and understanding, “Oh wow, this is going to be my life.” But also, “Uh oh. How do I do it?” You know, what do you do when you don’t have the route from the beginning? But because I had strong women wrapped around my life, they were like, “If you’re going to do it, study it. And then do it how you want to.” I found incredible professors that taught me the classics and the history. Martha Graham, Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp—all my heroes. Especially Twyla Tharp and Martha [Graham]—their convictions and discipline are what drive me.
Did you have a lot of fire in you?
Yeah, yeah. Passion. I always call it when I’m a maniac in rehearsal. So much passion still. I really love it. I don’t think you’ll ever see me jaded. I don’t know what that is. I’m always excited about it. Tired? Yes. Frustrated? Don’t have the answer? Sometimes failing? Yes, that’s part of it. But it doesn’t pull me into the ground. It just gives me the fire.
You’ve now found a creative home on Broadway. How does it feel to be part of the legacy and the community?
It feels incredible. For me, Broadway came with dancers I’ve known since they were 12 and then strangers that I’m in love with now. I have this incredible village of people that are so supportive of me and I them. I’m just so excited to see what else is there. I’m now holding on so tight to make sure that all I do now is based on that Broadway skill. I want to really hold onto what I know has always been my first instinct, which is to do things that speak to me and inspire me. But having this now and seeing all of that history there is really emotional for me. It makes me want to cry all the time because you just don’t think it’s possible sometimes. Everything came a little bit later for me and sometimes that makes it feel impossible. Every time I walk to the theater and my name is there, I stop for a second. I shake my head and I can’t believe it.

SUSAN HILFERTY LOOKS BACK 20 YEARS TO DISSECT WICKED’S MOST ICONIC COSTUMES
STORY BY Beth Stevens
Costume designer Susan Hilferty could measure Wicked’s life in the Broadway productions she’s worked on since building the wardrobe of Oz—15. She could also measure it in the Tony nominations that followed her 2004 win for her Wicked artistry—four. Or, she could let the changing hues on her head tell their own story—“I was a brunette and now I have silver hair.”
Hilferty sat down with Broadway.com Managing Editor Beth Stevens for a retrospective of her now-iconic work. And from the lobby of the Gershwin Theatre, Hilferty can still see shadows of her past self anxiously pacing that same space in October 2003. “I remember when we were gathered in this very lobby back 20 years ago, fretting about whether or not it would get an audience—whether or not it was going to survive,” she recalls. “I don’t think it was clear to anybody it would have the kind of legs that it has…The show is still as powerful as it was when it first opened 20 years ago.”
Before Wicked, Hilferty’s Broadway career comprised predominantly plays. Her earliest Broadway projects were collaborations with South African playwright Athol Fugard (A Lesson From Aloes in 1980 and Blood Knot in 1985), followed by a mix of contemporary work by playwrights like Tina Howe, Christopher Durang and Claudia Shear—and classics from the likes of William Shakespeare (The Comedy of Errors) and Tennessee Williams (The Night of the Iguana). Only two items on her Broadway resume before Wicked came along were musicals, and both were revivals: the 1995 production of How to Succeed in Business… and 2002’s Into the Woods.
“I always say that Wicked came to me at exactly the right moment in my career,” Hilferty reflects. “The kinds of designs that I created for Wicked— five years before, I wouldn’t have necessarily had the power or strength to have imagined those… It gave me the opportunity at exactly the right moment to move into a kind of storytelling that I love to do.”
Whether or not audiences fully appreciate the power of storytelling through clothing, when costume pieces become as instantly identifiable as Hilferty’s, it’s obvious that the garments are doing their job. And with a closer look, the how behind each design becomes clear.
Elphaba’s “Wicked Witch” dress—as Hilferty affectionately calls it—may give off a simple black silhouette, but monochrome it is not. “You can see how many different colors we included in the making of the skirt,” says Hilferty pointing out the different colors layered into Elphaba’s signature look. “If you look through the lines of the fabric in here, this is all pieced.” Beyond aesthetics, character is what motivates these small design details. “The idea was really always having a comparison between Elphaba and Glinda. Elphaba’s from the earth, and Glinda’s from the sky. When I look at this, it reminds me of me looking at coal, looking at mica, looking at things that come from the earth. It was always important for me that Elphaba was firmly planted on the ground.”
Still, this earth-bound image is only effective if it’s juxtaposed by an airy Glinda— and making a weighty ball gown look like it can fly is a battle with physics. “It should feel like it’s light and effortless,” says Hilferty, examining the famous blue dress that Glinda dons as she glides in on her bubble. “Because it’s got so many sequins on it, it’s actually quite heavy.” That’s 68,000 hand-sewn sequins for the record. “And if you lift it up and just see how many layers there are, it goes on and on. So it takes a lot of structure to make it feel like it’s just got a lot of air going on inside.”
Hilferty directs the fashion-savvy audience members to look out for the Dior influences in the gown (“That was important for me that everybody know that
Glinda shops from the Dior of Oz”), but the dress’s singular architecture ends up serving both fashion and function. “This dress is actually her safety harness,” Hilferty explains. “The inner structure, instead of being the delicate Dior corset, is actually strong enough to hold a safety harness. So she’s always protected in case anything happens.”
And then there’s the roguish Fiyero—a young man in a fairytale land whose look has to somehow immediately map to familiar images of wealth and privilege. For this assignment, Hilferty started with a single concept: “The research for me ended up being princes. Not only princes in Europe, but also what we see as the princes of Hollywood—what our idea of a prince is.” Prince leads to polo, which then begets riding clothes, and before you know it, you have Wicked’s most zealously discussed piece of clothing: Fiyero’s pants. “Many people don’t know what a polo outfit is, but they go, ‘Oh, there’s something about it that has power,’” Hilferty says. “I don’t know what polo really looks like in Oz because we don’t know what kind of animals they’re actually riding. But I knew that by holding onto polo, it comes with a physical effortlessness. So when he arrives, you’re just conscious of his physicality.”
“I believe that every show that I design, I’m creating a culture and a world,” says Hilferty. “The role of the designers is to find the clues in the text that not everybody sees.” Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship rendered as a meeting of equal forces from the earth and sky may go largely unrecognized to this day. But after 20 years of sold-out performances, Hilferty knows she’s done her part in telling their story. “They have conflict, they disagree, they learn about themselves, and then in the end they change for good,” she says, still relishing the journey of the women she helped craft over two decades ago. “I love that part.”
Wicked is scheduled to come to Citizens Opera House starting September 23, 2026. For more information and features, head to Broadway.com.

A Brief History
The Moulin Rouge club you will see in the theatre tonight is a work of theatrical imagination in the spirit of the Moulin Rouge of Paris. Here’s a brief history of that emblematic venue.
▪ October 6, 1889: The Moulin Rouge opens at the foot of the Montmartre hill. The aim of its founders, Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler, is to allow the very rich to come and slum it in a fashionable district, where people live differently from other parts of Paris. The place attracts men and women, the middle classes and rich foreigners passing through Paris, as well as artists and ordinary folk. The French cancan, a new dance inspired by the quadrille, enchanted the spectators. Nicknamed “The First Palace of Women” by Oller and Zidler, the cabaret quickly becomes a great success.
▪ The first revue, Circassiens et Circassiennes, is launched in April 1890. ToulouseLautrec creates the posters for the Moulin Rouge from 1891, the first being La Goulue.
▪ July 29, 1907: First appearance of Mistinguett at the Moulin Rouge in the Revue de la Femme.
▪ After the First World War, Francis Salabert takes charge of the Moulin Rouge. The venue experiences a new popularity thanks to Jacques-Charles and Mistinguett. As the artistic director of the Moulin Rouge, Mistinguett sets a new standard for spectacular revue shows that will inspire Las Vegas venues for nearly a century. American revues, including the Hoffmann Girls, are put on for the first time in Paris.
▪ In the 1930s, the ballroom is transformed into the most ultra-modern nightclub of the time. The Moulin Rouge welcomes the Cotton Club in 1937.
▪ June 22, 1951: Georges France, called Jo France, acquires the Moulin Rouge and starts major renovation work. The birthplace of the French cancan now hosts major international artists.
▪ 1955: Jo France transfers the Moulin Rouge to the brothers Joseph and Louis Clérico. The famous French cancan is still performed, soon choreographed by Ruggero Angeletti and danced by the Doriss Girls.
▪ 1962: Jacki Clérico, son of Joseph Clérico, takes charge of the Moulin Rouge. It is the start of a new era: enlargement of the auditorium, installation of a giant aquarium and the first aquatic ballet. Frou Frou of 1963 and its ensuing success marked the beginning of the series of shows beginning with an “F,” their lucky letter, including ten shows up to the latest revue.
▪ In 2019, the Moulin Rouge and its 60 artists celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Féerie revue show: two hours of amazement featuring cabaret and music hall styles, dance scenes and surprise acts, without forgetting the Moulin Rouge’s most emblematic dance, the French cancan.
▪ October 2024: The Moulin Rouge, famous around the world, celebrates its 135th anniversary.
The authentic Moulin Rouge of Paris invites you to enter its dazzling and spectacular world. Visit us at the home and birthplace of the Parisian way of celebrating since 1889!

ABOUT THE THEATER
Welcome to New England’s premier performing arts theater, the Citizens Opera House. As you settle in to enjoy the show, take a few moments to appreciate the splendid design and craftsmanship surrounding you. The exceptional beauty of the theater is rooted in its equally exceptional history. The Citizens Opera House (originally known as the B. F. Keith Memorial Theatre) is one of the finest examples of the vaudeville circuit palace at the pinnacle of its development. Designed in a combination of French and Italian styles by Thomas White Lamb, one of the foremost theater architects of his day, it was erected under the close personal supervision of Edward Franklin Albee (1857–1930 and great-grandfather of the playwright of the same name) to memorialize his late partner, Benjamin Franklin Keith (1846–1914). Because it was constructed as a memorial and tribute to vaudeville’s greatest impresario, it was built with a degree of luxury in its appointments that is almost unrivalled.
When the theater opened on October 29, 1928, the opening was attended by many theatrical luminaries, among them George M. Cohan and Al Jolson. Former Mayor James Michael Curley was also a guest of honor. The Radio-Keith-Orpheum organization which by that time owned the theater was represented by the host of that great occasion, R. K. O. Board Chairman Joseph P. Kennedy.
The theater presented vaudeville for only a year before featuring first-run films for the ensuing decades. In 1965 Sack Theatres purchased the B. F. Keith Memorial Theatre from R. K. O. The new owners refurbished the building, making great efforts to restore its opulent beauty, and renamed it the Savoy Theatre. In 1978 the theater was bought by the Opera Company of Boston. The name of the theater was then changed from Savoy to the Boston Opera House.
Under the direction of the renowned opera impresario Sarah Caldwell, the Boston Opera
House hosted some of the most acclaimed stagings of opera performances in the modern era. Unfortunately, the costs of maintaining the theater outstripped the ability of the Company to keep up. As tax and utility bills went unpaid, the theater began to suffer deterioration. The Company closed the theater in 1991 and the deterioration accelerated at a sad and alarming rate. In 1995, the Boston Opera House was placed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 11 Most Endangered Buildings list.
Under the subsequent ownership of Clear Channel Communications, and with the assistance of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, the necessary building permits were issued in late 2002 and work to completely renovate and restore the Citizens Opera House commenced. In order to accommodate the needs of large Broadway touring productions, the old stagehouse and attached dressing rooms were completely demolished to make way for a larger, state-of-the-art stagehouse and new dressing rooms. Meanwhile, everything between the proscenium wall of the stage and the Washington Street facade was carefully restored. A rare assembly of old-world craftsmanship and highlyskilled trades went to work restoring sculptural plaster, gold leaf finishes, Carrara marble, paintings and tapestries, grand staircases, chandeliers, walnut and oak paneling. The total cost of the restoration exceeded $50 million.
In September 2009, the Citizens Opera House officially entered yet another phase in its storied history. Local businessmen Don Law and David Mugar joined forces to purchase the Citizens Opera House from Live Nation, returning the theater to local ownership for the first time in decades. The same month, Boston Ballet launched its first full season with the Citizens Opera House as its new home, and Broadway In Boston continues to present the best of touring Broadway on this storied stage.
