rent Barrett may be the hardestworking stage actor you’ve never heard of. Consider his résumé: Sharpshooting heartthrob Frank Butler opposite Reba McEntire as Annie Oakley in the 1999 Broadway revival of Annie Get Your Gun. The charming thief Baron Felix Von Gaigern in Tommy Tune’s 1990 Tony Award-nominated Grand Hotel (you may have seen him do “We’ll Take a Glass Together” on the Tony telecast). Eel-like lawyer Billy Flynn in Chicago opposite the Roxie Harts of Christie Brinkley, Karen Ziemba, Melanie Griffith, Sandy Duncan, Charlotte D’Amboise (and many others) over 14 years and counting. And that’s an extremely stingy list. Barrett, a classic Broadway baritone with power, a smooth upper range and a jam-packed schedule, typifies the kind of first-rate, if not first-line, talent found in New York and, when we’re lucky, on the road. These performers too rarely get marquee billing and don’t become household names, but when you see them onstage, you know something special has happened.

Barrett has no complaints. He spent the past three years creating the role of the Phantom in Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular, returns regularly to Chicago (he’s played Billy Flynn more than any other actor) and, when not in a show, sings with the Broadway Tenors, a group he helped found and produces. He grabbed his first Broadway job, as Diesel in the 1980 revival of West Side Story, while a senior in the first-ever musical theater class at Carnegie Mellon University. Critics have called him “dashing” and “suave” with “dreamboat matinee-idol charisma.” He calls his career “a very charmed route.” “I’ve been fortunate enough to come around at a time when revivals were really in full swing,” says Barrett, 55. “I’ve been able to do a lot of the great roles that were written for men in the American musical theater — King Arthur, Fred Graham/ Petruchio, Tony in West Side Story.” Not bad for a Kansas kid who grew up in a town of 900, knew musicals only because his aunt Alice owned the local movie theater and made his career choice with a single role to his credit: Wild Bill Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication 11

On the road ... again

This Peter Pan tour visits 14 cities over eight months. It began in early June in Los Angeles and ends April 28, 2013, in Providence, R.I. There are four things, Brent Barrett — when prodded — says he needs on the road: 1. His dog, Boris, a 5-year-old Shih Tzu who accompanies him to the theater every night. “My dresser tells me that as soon as the curtain call music starts, Boris jumps up because he knows I’m on my way.” 2. A rental car to get out and do things in his “free” time. 3. A kingsize bed. 4. A special towel that has his name embroidered on it. A cousin, who rips on him for being in show business and playing the piano, made it for him 25 years ago.

Hickock in his high school’s production of Calamity Jane. The thought — “This is what I want to do” — hit him onstage. This isn’t his first shooting match with Cathy Rigby, either. They toured in 1993 as Frank and Annie in Annie Get Your Gun. And he’s played Captain Hook before, some 20 years ago, just after Grand Hotel. He calls the pantalooned pirate “one of the great, fun villains of musical theater.” As in previous stagings, Barrett doubles as Mr. Darling, who has just two scenes, and as the swiniest swine in the world, aka Mrs. Hook’s little baby boy. There actually may be more boy than man in the bloody buccaneer. Hook, Barrett says, “is a petulant, spoiled brat. In a way he and Peter are the same. Neither of them want to grow up, and they want their own way all the time. And there comes the conflict.” Hook himself is deliciously conflicted. He fancies himself fearless, as the scourge of the sea, but he quakes to the tick-ticktock of a clock-swallowing crocodile and wants Wendy for a mother. “There’s a little bit of Peter Pan and Captain Hook in all of us,” Barrett offers. “A lot of times Hook is played very foppish,” he says, “for the humor, for the jokes. But kids have seen so much these days, we want to get a sense that he is dangerous not just buffoonish.” Barrett knows it’s working with his first entrance. “The audience claps because the costume is so outrageous,” he says. “Then they boo, and I know we’re OK, that we’re all in it together.” So don’t let him down, OK?

The Addams Family

evolution “Da Da Da Dum, snap, snap, Da Da Da Dum” … go ahead and snap, you know you want to. This legendary theme song by Vic Mizzy will forever be a part of American popular culture. For Douglas Sills, who plays Gomez in the national tour of The Addams Family, the kooky clan is one he’s happy to be a part of. “I knew how pervasive The Addams Family was in that period of American media,” says Sills. “It was up there with Lost in Space and those things that we have come to think of as fundamentally American.” Developed by Charles Addams, the Addams family first appeared as a comic in The New Yorker from 1938 to 1988. the family as an American icon. From Lurch’s basso profundo “You rang?” to Gomez’s feathery kisses up Morticia’s arm, many of the show’s elements found their way into our collective unconsciousness. The family has been featured in a 1972 Scooby-Doo TV movie, two Saturday morning cartoons, a 1998 TV show, two feature films, a direct-to-video movie, a popular pinball game, and now a Broadway musical. About CHARLES ADDAMS The musical The Addams Family is inspired by the creations of the legendary American cartoonist Charles Addams, who lived from 1912 until 1988. Mr. Manos has been in At­lanta for more than 40 years. He has produced more than 700 works of theater, ballet and opera. He has been recognized with nu­mer­ous civic awards, including the Atlanta Critics Award for the de­v el­o p­m ent of the art of the­ater in Atlanta and the Gov­er­nor’s Award in the Arts. He has been instrumental in the creation of such organizations as the Winter Play Season, Grand Opera in the Park, Just Us The­ater Company and the Fall Film Fes­ti­val – just to name a few! During the early months of the Woodruff Arts Center, Mr. Manos was responsible for 12 pro­duc­tions of theater, ballet and opera in that facility. Mr. Manos received the Coca-Cola Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award from the Arts & Business Council of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. In 2005, Mr. Manos was the first recipient of the GAELA Award, presented by the Atlanta Coalition of Performing Arts. In 2007, Mr. Manos was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Broadway League. Mr. Manos was married for 45 years to Glenn Ryman Manos. He has two sons, Chris Jr. and Nick, a daughter, Ann, and is the very proud grandfather of seven grandsons and four granddaughters.

Mr. Manos is a graduate of the Westminster Schools in Atlanta and the University of North Carolina, where he was a Morehead Scholar. His career spans three decades in leadership positions. In the fall of 2000, he returned to Atlanta to become the managing director of Theater of the Stars. In 2008, he assumed the role of president. Mr. Manos has been heavily involved with the touring aspect of the company and has been the driving force behind many of the artistic and cultural marvels brought to the Theater of the Stars stage, including the world professional premiere of Disney's High School Musical, the co-productions of Deaf West’s Big River, The King And I with Sandy Duncan, Bombay Dreams and the newly re-imagined version of Les Misérables. Mr. Manos is the founder of the Junior Theatre Festival, an event that takes place every January in Atlanta, and brings students from all over the world together to perform, learn and celebrate theater. Mr. Manos and his wife, Laura, have been blessed with three children — Andy, Kate and Sam — and one crazy dog, Peach.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION The Theatre A fully restored 1929 “Movie Palace,” the Fox Theatre, with 4,678 seats, is a multiple-purpose facility, housing Broadway shows, ballet, symphonies, concerts, movies, and private corporate events.

Private Rooms The Fox Theatre has three private rental spaces, with accommodations for 25 to 1,200 guests. Our Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon are beautifully decorated and can be set up to your specifications. The Landmarks Lounge is adjacent to the lobby and is perfect for a small pre-show and intermission event. The Box Office The Fox Theatre Box Office is located in the arcade entrance to the theatre. The Box Office is open for walk up ticket sales Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., and Saturday, 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. The Fox Theatre Box Office is not open on Sundays unless there is a performance. On event days, the Box Office opens two hours prior to show time. Doors to the Fox open one hour prior to show time. Tickets for all performances at the Fox may be purchased at any TICKETMASTER outlet, by calling TICKETMASTER at 800.745.3000, or by visiting the Fox Theatre Box Office in person during regular Box Office hours. Group Sales The Fox Theatre Group Sales Department offers discounts to Groups for most Broadway shows. The Group Sales office is open Monday-Friday from 9am to 5pm. Call 404 8812000 or email foxgroup@foxtheatre.org. Concessions Concession stands are located in the Spanish Room, main lobby, and on the mezzanine lobby level. Restrooms Restrooms are located off the Main Lobby (downstairs), Mezzanine Lobby levels, and the Gallery level. Accessible restroom facilities are located in the Spanish Room and Accessible/Family restrooms are located through the Office door in the main lobby. Gift Shop The Fox Theatre operates a gift shop selling history books, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and an assortment of other theatre-related merchandise. The gift shop is located in the Spanish Room. Tours Tours of the Fox Theatre are available through the Atlanta Preservation Center. Tours are conducted Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Tours begin in the Peachtree Street Arcade entrance to the theatre. Smoking In accordance with the Fulton County Clean Air Ordinance, the Fox Theatre is a smoke-free facility. Smoking is only permitted in designated areas. Special Needs Ken Shook, Patron Services Coordinator, is our liaison to the disabled community. He can be reached at 404.881.2118 and can provide information on the locations and prices of accessible seating and other programs for the disabled. The Fox Theatre also has a brochure detailing all these programs for our patrons with special needs. This brochure is available at the Concierge Desk in the Arcade. An audio clarification device (Phonic Ear) is available for patrons with hearing disabilities. It is available, free of charge, on a first-come, first-serve basis on the evening of a performance, or you may reserve a device by calling the Patron Services Director. A limited number of booster seats are also available free of charge. Elevators Elevators are located at the north end of each lobby. The elevators are available during all performances and make it possible to access each lobby without the use of stairs. Patrons should be aware that access to upper seating areas do involve stairs. Parking Parking is available within a four-block radius in all directions of the Fox Theatre. Advanced reserved parking is available for sale at the Fox Box Office or by calling TICKETMASTER at 800.745.3000. The Fox Theatre assumes no responsibility for vehicles parked in any of the privately owned parking lots operating in the Fox Theatre district. Performance Notes All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket in order to be admitted to the theatre. Not all events are suitable for children. Infants will not be admitted to adult programs/performances. Parents will be asked to remove children who create a disturbance. Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the management, in conjunction with the wishes of the producers. Please turn off all pagers and cell phones prior to the beginning of each performance. Camera and recording devices are strictly prohibited. Backstage employees are represented by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (I.A.T.S.E.)

etiquette 1. Please arrive early. Latecomers may not be seated until intermission. 2. Take care of personal needs (drinks of water or restroom) before the performance begins. 3. Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. We encourage you to share your experience at the Fox via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting. 4. Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theatre is never allowed as it is a distraction to those around you and a danger to the performers. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Dear Lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of the people behind you. Please consider the people that will be seated behind you when choosing whether or not to wear a hat or what hair style you choose. 7. Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artist or show. 8. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag. 9. Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic. 10. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you. 11. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. Wait until it is over and then exit with the rest of the audience.

Fox fun facts: Save the Fox

On May 17, 1974, the Fox was put on the National Register of Historic Places. Buildings less than 50 years old are not meant to qualify, but because of the Fox’s “outstanding architectural merit,” it made the list. Here are some other fun facts: By the 1970s, the sheer size of the auditorium made it impossible to hold first-run films for the long time periods now required by distributors. In 1974, Southern Bell approached Mosque, Inc., who had owned the theatre since 1935, to buy and raze the theatre for its new headquarters. July 10, 1974: Possibly the first official Save the Fox meeting was held at Herren’s restaurant. Among those in attendance was future Mayor Maynard Jackson. December 31, 1974: To generate Save the Fox donations, Alex Cooley presented The Gregg Allman Tour. More than 4,000 people attended.

March 20, 1976: The Delta Zeta sorority hosted an “Evening at the Fox” and raised $70,000. May 26, 1976: The Fox was made a National Historic Landmark by the 50 EncoreAtlantA.com

U.S. Department of the Interior. By February 1978, the Fox’s mortgage was paid off, six months ahead of schedule, thanks to the contributions of over 7,000 generous citizens.

The “thunka, thunka, thunka” sound of the blades of a UH-IH (Huey) helicopter is instantly recognizable to Vietnam veterans.
