4 | leadership GENNADI NEDVIGIN (Artistic Director), in February 2016, was named Atlanta Ballet’s fourth artistic director in the Company’s then 87-year history. Nedvigin, born in Rostov, Russia, began his training at age 5. At 10, he was accepted into the Bolshoi Ballet Academy. Upon graduating, he joined Moscow Renaissance Ballet, as a soloist, before he was invited to dance with Le Jeune Ballet de France in Paris. In 1997, while on tour in the U.S., San Francisco Ballet (SFB) Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson offered Nedvigin a soloist contract. After three years, he was promoted to principal dancer. While at SFB, Nedvigin won the International Competition’s Erik Bruhn Prize (1999). He has also received three Isadora Duncan Dance Awards (2001, 2010 and 2017). Along the way, Nedvigin was fortunate to work with many world-renowned choreographers. In addition to his dancing career, Nedvigin also taught master classes and staged ballets in the U.S. and abroad before becoming an artistic director. Recently, Nedvigin sat on juried panels at the World Ballet Competition in Orlando, the International Ballet Competition held in Jackson, Mississippi, and the Youth America Grand Prix. Under Nedvigin’s guidance, Atlanta Ballet has established the Academy training program, which includes a top-tier performance ensemble, Atlanta Ballet 2, representing his commitment to training for the next generation of professional dancers.

ARTURO JACOBUS (President & CEO) is in his 12th season with Atlanta Ballet. He was previously chief executive of Pacific Northwest Ballet and San Francisco Ballet, each for 10 years.

He holds master’s degrees in business administration, arts administration and human resources management, and he has completed management certificate programs at the University of Washington and Harvard Business School. Jacobus has served on executive boards for such arts organizations as Dance/USA, Washington State Arts Alliance, Northwest Development Officers’ Association and California Arts Advocates. He has stayed actively involved in arts strategy and advocacy by chairing and sitting on panels for the city of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts. Before becoming an arts executive, Jacobus served for 20 years as a bandmaster for the U.S. Navy, leading ensembles in Villefranche, France; Gaeta and Naples, Italy; and San Francisco. While stationed in Naples, under the Commander in Chief Allied Forces Southern Europe (CincSouth), he founded a 50-member NATO ensemble from the armies, navies and air forces of Italy, Greece, Turkey, the U.K. and the U.S.

S HARON STORY (Dean of the Centre for Dance Education) joined Atlanta Ballet after a professional dance career that spanned more than 20 years and included tenures with Joffrey Ballet, the School of American Ballet, Stars of New York City Ballet, Atlanta Ballet and 10 years with Boston Ballet. Her Boston Ballet tenure included international tours with Rudolf Nureyev. In 1996, along with her role as ballet mistress, Story became dean of the Centre for Dance Education (Centre), which has grown to become one of the largest dance schools in the nation. The Centre is nationally recognized for its programs and community initiatives. Under Story’s direction, the Centre achieved accreditation with the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD). She serves currently as president of the board of directors for NASD. Story received the 2015 Women Making a Mark Award from Atlanta Magazine and was featured in the ArtsATL Legacy Series 2018.

She is committed to providing a noncompetitive atmosphere and access to dance education that is shaped by the community’s needs, is innovative and inspires the commitment and excellence that are the trademarks of Atlanta Ballet.

8 | artistic staff ARTISTIC STAFF RORY HOHENSTEIN (Ballet Master) was born in Washington

D.C., where he began dancing at the age of 6. Hohenstein furthered his training, from the age of 12, at the Kirov Academy of Ballet. At 17, he joined Le Jeune Ballet de France in Paris. In 2000, he joined San Francisco Ballet as a member of the corps, being promoted to soloist in 2006. In 2008, he moved to New York joining Christopher Wheeldon’s company, Morphoses, performing in its home seasons at New York City Center and at Sadler’s Wells in London. He spent a season dancing with the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company before joining the Joffrey Ballet in 2011, where he continued to be a leading artist with the company through the 2018/19 season. Some personal highlights include dancing the roles of Romeo in Krzysztof Pastor’s Romeo & Juliet, Riff in Jerome Robbins’ West Side Story Suite, Levin in Yuri Possokhov’s Anna Karenina and in Wayne McGregor’s Eden/Eden. This is Hohenstein's second season as ballet master at Atlanta Ballet.

OMAN RYKINE (Ballet Master) joined Atlanta Ballet from R Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet School in 2016. He graduated from the Rudolph Nureyev State Ballet Academy in his hometown of Ufa, Russia, and he was a principal dancer with Boston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, English National Ballet and the Bashkir State Opera and Ballet Theatre. Rykine won the gold medal and first prize at the International Ballet Competition in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1993, and the bronze medal at both the International Ballet Competition in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1994, and the Rudolph Nureyev International Ballet Competition in Budapest, Hungary, in 1993. He holds the honorary title of Artist of Merit of the Republic from the Government of Ufa, Russia. During his career, Rykine toured extensively in Europe, Asia and the United States and was a guest artist with various ballet companies. He retired from the stage in 2010 and began teaching. Rykine was a guest faculty member at the Boston Ballet School before joining the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School in January 2012.

CLAUDIA SCHREIER (Choreographer-in-Residence/ Choreographer, Pleiades Dances) has choreographed, directed and produced for dance, opera and film across the U.S. and internationally. She is the choreographer-in-residence at Atlanta Ballet and has been commissioned by Boston Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Vail Dance Festival, Juilliard Opera, ABT Studio Company and New York Choreographic Institute. Her first work for Atlanta Ballet, First Impulse, was named a 2019 Standout Performance by Pointe Magazine. Schreier served as choreographer for Juilliard Opera’s Dido and Aeneas and as co-artistic director for the production’s London and Versailles tour. The Hikers, her film and live performance collaboration with visual artist Rashid Johnson, has been exhibited in New York, Aspen, and Mexico City. She has contributed to programs at the White House, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and for the Kennedy Center Honors. Her work is the subject of two documentaries, most recently PBS’s Emmy Award-winning "Dancing on the Shoulders of Giants" (Capital Region), and she was a TEDx speaker at Columbia University. She is a recipient of the Princess Grace Award, Toulmin Fellowship at the Center for Ballet and the Arts at NYU, NEFA National Dance Project Award, Lotos Prize, and Suzanne Farrell Dance Prize. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University.

KEATON LEIER (Choreographer, La Forme du Vent), originally from Canada, grew up in the small city of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Leier started studying ballet at a later age, and he joined the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School in 2013. After graduation from the school in 2016, he then moved on to dance with Houston Ballet’s second company for one year.

Joining the ranks of Atlanta Ballet for the 2017|2018 Season, Leier is now commencing his fourth season with the Company.

His most recent highlight was premiering The Nutcracker Prince at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Some more highlights include dancing Gurn in La Sylphide, as well as the lead in Liam Scarlett's Vespertine. Dancing with the Company over the years, Leier has enjoyed performing works from Alexander Ekman, Johan Kobborg, Liam Scarlett, Yuri Possokhov, Dwight Rhoden, Ricardo Amarante, Yury Yanowsky and Craig Davidson. Though he experimented with choreographing some in school, this is Leier's first time choreographing professionally, and he is looking forward to exploring this opportunity.

CARRAIG NEW (Choreographer, I Know Where It Is) was born in Juneau, Alaska. He is a graduate of the Moscow State Academy of Choreography where he studied classical Russian technique with Bolshoi Theatre first soloist Denis Medvedev.

He performed on the New Stage of the Bolshoi Theater in Yuri Grigorovich’s staging of La Fille Mal Gardée, dancing in the Gypsy Dance as one of the four friends, as well as being featured as a demi-soloist. He also performed as a soloist in La Bayadère's Dance of the Drum. New performed on the Bolshoi Historical Stage in A Tribute to Marius Petipa, which included Danse des Forbans from Le Corsaire. He was invited to dance as the guest artist at the premier performances of the Ballet de Barcelona, in Spain and France. New joined Atlanta Ballet 2 in 2018-19. He has performed Arabian, Russian, Mice and Skier in Yuri Possokhov's reimagined production of The Nutcracker; the Beast in Bruce Wells’ Beauty and the Beast; Von Rothbart and Benno in Bruce Wells’ The Swan Princess; Dance of the Wedding Guests in La Sylphide; and a leading role in Volar, a contemporary ballet choreographed by Nadia Mara.

BRET COPPA (Choreographer, Rabten Numinous) is from San Pedro, California. He danced with Atlanta Ballet 2 for one season before joining Atlanta Ballet as a Company apprentice.

This is Coppa’s first season as a Company member. Some of his roles with Atlanta Ballet include Gaston, The Beast, Rat King, Russian, Nephew, Arabian and Red Man. He is a graduate of University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where he has performed many principal roles; including Solor in La Bayadere, Principal Male in Donizzeti Variations, Waltz Boy in Serenade, The Poet in Les Sylphides and Cavalier in The Nutcracker. Coppa got his start at San Pedro City Ballet, then moving to Peninsula School of Performing Arts under the artistic direction of Roberto Almageur. During his training in the Los Angeles area, he performed as a guest artist in California, and danced roles throughout the country. He has also competed into the Prix de Lausanne twice, and he was a finalist in 2015. In 2017, Coppa went to St. Petersburg, Russia, where he received his teaching certification in the Vaganova method.

10 | designers JOSEPH R. WALLS (Lighting Designer, Pleiades Dances) most recently designed the lighting for Orlando Ballet’s production of Moulin Rouge. Additionally, he has designed original works for The Washington Ballet and a list of choreographers including Jessica Lang, Trey McIntyre, Ethan Stiefel, John Heginbotham, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and Dana Genshaft. Internationally, Walls regularly works with STEPS of Panama and recently designed Marlyn Attie’s Crush at the National Theatre of Panamá with support from the United States Embassy. Walls holds a nomination for the prestigious Premios Escena award for best lighting in Panama City, Panama. In 2019, Walls designed the weeklong celebration with Pope Francis – The World Youth Day. Other design collaborations include those with Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Ballet West, Utah Metropolitan Ballet, staibdance, Inland Pacific Ballet, Chautauqua Dance, Ballet Spartanburg, The Charlotte Ballet, Roswell Dance Theatre and Komasnsé Dance Theater, as well as with Sundance Mountain Resort productions. www.jwallsdesign.com ATLANTA BALLET COSTUME SHOP (Costume Designer, Pleiades Dances) is currently comprised of five people: Colleen McGonegle – costume director; Susan Carter – costume technician and construction supervisor; Chloé Gervais – costume technician; Abby Parker – costume technician and shoe manager; and Abby Dupree Polston – costume technician and patternmaker. Collectively they bring over 70 years of costuming experience to Atlanta Ballet, with each person bringing their own unique and valuable skill set. During Gennadi Nedvigin’s tenure with Atlanta Ballet, the Costume Shop has supervised costumes for 35 ballets for the Company, building 14 of those shows from scratch. Given Nedvigin’s vision to bring new works to Atlanta, the Costume Shop has also constructed costumes from brand new designs for three to four world premieres a season. Last March, when the season was suspended, the Costume Shop saw that there was an urgent need for people who could sew. Within a week, they switched from making tutus to making masks, beginning their months-long production of personal protective equipment (PPE). During the spring and early summer, the Costume Shop provided 3290 masks, 250 scrub caps and 1457 gowns to 26 local hospitals, including Grady, Emory, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Wellstar. The Costume Shop has recently designed the costumes for Bruce Wells’ Atlanta Ballet 2 presents Beauty and the Beast and The Swan Princess, and has been working on refreshing Wells' Atlanta Ballet 2 presents Snow White. Having had the opportunity to work with Claudia Schreier on the build of the costumes for First Impulse, the Costume Shop was excited to get the opportunity to collaborate with her on not only the build, but also the design of her new piece Pleiades Dances.

Founded in January 2016 by Michael Greenbaum (owner of Tower Beer, Wine & Spirits), Tower Lights provides monthly community service opportunities for employees, customers, and friends of Tower, in a partnership with United Way of Greater Atlanta.

Our mission is to serve the under-served.

Whether it be planning an ice cream social for senior citizens, feeding the homeless at various shelters, painting and serving lunch to veterans, or bowling with youth in foster care, Tower Lights hopes to make our community a little brighter, one volunteer event at a time.

In seven years, Tower Lights’ annual Tower of Talent concert has raised more than $1.75 million for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (and counting!).
