HADESTOWN’S WENDELL SCOTT  CALLS THE FOX HIS SECOND HOME

From 2015-2019, Hadestown cast member Wendell Scott was flying the friendly skies as a flight attendant for Delta Air Lines. In the years since, the Atlanta native has been working as a production coordinator for the company, utilizing the digital broadcasting degree he achieved at the University of Georgia.

“I handled logistics for our larger video and photography shoots—like the safety video and external campaigns you’d see,” he said. “I resonated with the company’s core values—integrity and diversity. Flying allowed me to be myself, to care about the journeys and safety of others, and that was really fun. I became a brand ambassador for Delta, appearing in campaigns and videos. Later, as a production coordinator, my main role was training new brand ambassadors and making them comfortable on set.”

DREAMING OF THE STAGE

Through his decade at Delta, Scott has also been auditioning, looking to fulfil his dream of being on stage—something he’s wanted to do professionally since he was in the 10th grade.

“I started performing at Chamblee High School on the cafeteria stage and I knew then it’s what I wanted to do the rest of my life,” he said. “I usually led the school musicals. My first was Cinderella, where I played Prince Christopher. Then we did A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, I was the Cat in the Hat in Seussical, and more.”

After college, Scott booked a job at Disney, his first time performing in a professional space.

“It showed me I could really do this,” he said. “I always knew I’d get on the stage somehow, some way.”

Scott worked diligently, training with coaches at the Atlanta Institute for Musical Theatre and Broadway Studio in New York to perfect his craft.

“My mentors, Kristine Reese and Billy Tighe at the Atlanta Institute for Musical Theatre, really tailored my training,” Scott said. “They showed me how to find auditions in New York and what material fit my voice.”

His first Atlanta professional theater gig was Kinky Boots at Out Front Theatre Company in 2022.

“I played Lola, and every one of our shows was sold out. It just felt right,” he said. “Then I performed in Beauty and the Beast at City Springs Theatre Company, which taught me how to become a well-rounded performer— not just an actor, singer or dancer, but someone who can do it all with confidence.”

HIS DREAM COME TRUE

In 2023, Scott took a day off from his job to audition for Hadestown, but didn’t get it. When the show came back around two years later, he was ready and hired as a swing.

“This is a dream come true,” said Scott, who noted another dream was bringing the show to Atlanta and his hometown theatre. He remembers first seeing Hadestown at the Fox in 2022 and Nathan Lee Graham was playing Hermes at the time. Scott set a goal to be in the show, play Hermes and one day perform it at the Fox Theatre.

“The Fox Theatre is like my second home,” Scott said. “I do a lot of content creation for Broadway in Atlanta and the Fox, and I always thought, ‘At some point, I can do this show here.’”

Touring reminds Scott of being a flight attendant because he’s always traveling and meeting different kinds of people and seeing different cultures throughout the country.

As a swing, Scott covers the workers, and understudies both Hermes and Hades.

Wendell Scott Jr.

“Seeing the story from so many different perspectives keeps it fresh for me, and it makes me not only a well-rounded performer but also a wellrounded person,” he said. “On this tour, I’m the oldest guy in the cast. Being in Hadestown is about perseverance—continuing no matter what. That’s the heart of the story and it resonates so deeply today.”

A FULL-CIRCLE MOMENT

Performing at the Fox Theatre with Hadestow n will be a true full-circle moment for Scott.

“I usually host their holiday show, and now being back there with a Broadway production means I’ve proven to myself that I can do this,” he said. “Being back in Atlanta means representing not just myself, but my city and my community. That’s something I take pride in.”

The first thing he plans to do when he gets home is sleep in his own bed, then he’ll see his family, hug his mom and help his dad with projects around the house. He’s also planning on bringing his tour-mates to a night out on Buford Highway in Chamblee.

“We’re going to do a Buford Highway crawl with some cast members to show them the different cultures along that stretch and then end with karaoke at Happy Karaoke,” Scott said. “That’s going to be our little welcome-back party.”

1 Please arrive early. Latecomers may not be seated until intermission.

2 Take care of personal needs (water, restroom use) before the performance begins.

3 Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cellphones, beepers and watch alarms. We encourage you to share your experience via social media but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances. The glow from your device is distracting.

4 Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theater is never allowed. It distracts those around you and endangers the performers.

5 The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point.

6 Dear lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of those behind you. Please consider those seated behind you when choosing whether to wear a hat or what hairstyle you choose.

7 Please refrain from talking, humming or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artists or show.

8. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag.

9 Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic.

10 If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed, the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you

FOX FUN FACTS

THE BOSS BRINGS THE DARKNESS, PRINCE’S FINAL SHOWS AND OUTKAST DOES BALLET

Atlanta’s Fox Theatre has played host to many world-renowned artists, from Elvis Presley and Bruce Springsteen to Pearl Jam and Prince. In 1978, Bruce Springsteen ended his legendary Darkness On The Edge of Town tour at the Fox Theatre with two back-to-back shows. “This is the last night of our tour, tonight,” Bruce said to the sold-out crowd at the top of the show. “Our 86th show. So one more time for the last time.” Recordings of the set remain one of the Boss’s most sought-after bootlegs. Here are a few other rockin’ fun facts:

• Despite being criticized as a “semi-hillbilly” by the Atlanta Constitution, Elvis Presley performed six sold out shows at the Fox Theatre over the course of two days in March of 1956. The price to see the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll? $1.

• Prince performed what would be his final two concerts at the Fox Theatre April 14, 2016. Playing solo on his Piano and a Microphone tour, The Purple One dazzled two sold-out crowds with a selection of hits and covers, ranging from Joni Mitchell to David Bowie to Vince Guaraldi’s theme from Peanuts. Appropriately, Prince closed out

his last set with three encores, ending on an extended medley of “Purple Rain”.

• Pearl Jam played the Fox Theatre on April 3, 1994 to debut material from their upcoming album Vs. The set was simulcast on radio stations across the globe and became a much soughtafter bootleg among fans before receiving an official release in 2024.

• In 2008, OutKast’s Big Boi traded his signature Nikes for pointe shoes, joining the Atlanta Ballet for “Big” which ran for six performances at the Fox April 10-13.
