To remain open to surprise requires an enormous amount of humility and faith. It’s tempting and much easier to cling to certainty rather than embrace life’s mysteries. But to see possibility in even the most vexing of times is quite miraculous.
It’s something the saints do well. Their wideeyed ability to see the miraculous in the mundane, to merge childlike wonder with eternal wisdom, is what sets them apart. It’s what makes them such reliable guides. Damian, the young protagonist of Millions, shares that humble point of view. Like the saints, his actions and response to the world might even appear foolish.
When an unexpected windfall comes, is it a miracle? Do we cling to it? Or, like the foolish saints, find joy in giving it away? These are just a few of the moral questions that Millions poses. To answer them requires a willingness to be surprised.
So too does producing a new musical! It also takes an enormous amount of faith, childlike wonder, and well, yes, millions. From the outside, it must appear as foolish as St. Francis’ renunciation of all his earthly possessions. But when you’ve got a creative team as talented as composer/lyricist Adam Guettel, writer Bob Martin, and director Bartlett Sher, it’s a bit like having the saints in your corner. And when you have an audience as appreciative of new work, as receptive to enchantment, as open to surprise as ours, it’s impossible not to embrace the possibility. Thank you for supporting and believing in this new miracle of a show.

“GREAT ART HAS LOVE AT THE CENTER OF IT”
Composer and Lyricist Adam Guettel and Book Writer Bob Martin on Millions
STORY BY Ashley Elliott & Mashaun D. Simon
The death of a parent never comes at a good time. For composer and lyricist Adam Guettel, it happened early on in the development process of Millions, and was the most absurd timing.
He’d gotten the urge to talk to his mother early one morning while waiting for Millions book writer Bob Martin to come downstairs so they could continue working on the show. He called and her personal assistant answered the phone.
“I said, ‘Hey, Bill, how’s she doing today?’ And Bill goes, ‘Well, she’s — hold on. She’s... she’s dead. She just died,’” he says. “She died at the moment I called. Talk about comedy and how it works. You have to see the absurdity in that moment.”
As Guettel processed the loss of his mother, Mary Rodgers — daughter of Richard Rodgers of the iconic composing team Rodgers and Hammerstein — he infused it into the work, using the show’s development process as an almost cathartic way of grieving. After all, she directly influenced his love of music, being a composer in her own right.
“I think it made the score quite, quite beautiful,” says Martin.
Money From the Sky
Guettel’s loss also made him connect to the piece’s central characters a little more, as the entire story pivots around grief and how two boys mourn the loss of their mother. When a bag of money seemingly falls from the sky, the boys grapple with how to handle it. The younger, Damian, thinks that it’s a gift from her and insists that they give it away, but the older, Anthony, decides that they should invest it or pay their bills with it.
“When [the boys] are essentially all that they have,” Guettel says, “it’s heart-wrenching for them to not be in agreement about this … to watch them divide and eventually come back together in the midst of having lost their mother and in the midst of running for their lives.”
This moral dilemma that the boys deal with in deciding what to do with the money they’ve found is an extremely challenging central point for a musical — especially a show that’s supposed to be a comedy and also enjoyable for the whole family — but Martin muses that he loves the “sort of absurd take” of balancing a show on the precipice of an ethical problem.
“I always like to ground [a comedy] in something real and painful,” Martin continues. “That’s how comedy should work in literature, basically to help us process pain. … It’s rare that I get a chance to deal with very, very big issues in a comedy, but it’s a comedy with an enormous heart.”

However, the musical is in good hands, as both Martin and Guettel are very familiar with working on shows that tackle huge subjects. Guettel, for instance, just opened a new Broadway production of his musical Floyd Collins, a gripping and powerful story about a cave explorer trapped in a cave in Kentucky. Guettel is also known for the stunning music and lyrics of The Light in the Piazza and Days of Wine and Roses. Martin is also no stranger to the Alliance, having co-written the book for The Prom, which premiered
Composer and Lyricist Adam Guettel
on the Alliance Stage in 2016 and told the story of a young queer girl simply asking for acceptance. He also worked on the books for two shows currently running on Broadway — Smash and Boop! The Musical.
Guettel enjoys the challenge the show offers, calling it “really brilliantly funny.” He thinks the success of the show will lie with everyone who takes part in the development of the show. “If I can find people who are willing to take something like [this] on,” he says, “we are automatically differentiated from most of what is going on right now, not only on Broadway, but in culture and in general. Great art has love at the center of it.”
Being a Good Person

The team director Bartlett Sher (To Kill a Mockingbird, The Bridges of Madison County, The Light in the Piazza) has pulled together certainly rises to the challenge. In addition to Martin and Guettel, Sher has recruited an incredible team of designers he’s worked with in the past, including costume designer Catherine Zuber (Moulin Rouge!, My Fair Lady, The King and I ), scenic designer Michael Yeargan (Oslo, South Pacific, The Light in the Piazza), and lighting designer Donald Holder (The Lion King, South Pacific, She Loves Me).
Martin adds that the show is, at its core, a “sly effort to explore faith, why it exists, how we can understand the nature of human suffering, and whether faith is the byproduct of that.”
“I think it’s always a good time for a story like this,” he continues. “But we have to honor the weight and the beauty of that. … [Right now,] we as a society are trying to remember what’s important and how we should treat people. We’re really battling in the same way Damian is — we’re sort of struggling with what it means to be a good person more than ever. It’s landing at the right time.”
Book Writer Bob Martin

SAINT WHO? STORIES OF THE SAINTS IN MILLIONS
BY Abrianna Belvedere
In Millions, Damian copes with the loss of his mother through studying the lives of Saints, starting with his saintly namesake. Damian knows a lot about Saint Damian, patron saint of surgeons, who was a physician that gave free medical treatment with his twin brother — including a miraculous leg transplant. Damian’s brother, Anthony, doesn’t care much about the Saints. Interestingly, he’s named after the patron saint of lost things (like a duffel bag full of cash).
Throughout Millions, Damian is visited by apparitions of saints. The first is Saint Clare of Assisi. St. Clare founded the Order of Poor Ladies of San Damiano (or, Saint Damian), eventually called the Order of Saint Clare. Near the end of her life, Saint Clare was too ill to attend Christmas Eve Mass which was held several miles away. During the Mass, as she laid in her bedroom, she had a vision of the Mass displayed on the wall of her room. This vision led the Church to call her the patron saint of eye disease. In 1958, Pope Pius XII designated her as the patron saint of television, as well, due to the remarkable similarity of her vision back in 1252 to this new technology.
The next saint to visit is Saint Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan order and longtime mentor to Saint Clare. Despite his father’s efforts to raise him to be a merchant, Francis wanted to live a life of profound poverty. One day, while praying in the ancient church of San Damiano, God told him, “Francis, repair my Church.” Initially, Francis thought God wanted him to repair the crumbling building, but later realized that God was calling him to repair the spiritual Church. Francis began preaching to all sorts of people — and animals. There’s a story of St. Francis preaching to birds who stayed to listen throughout his sermon, and only flew away when Francis ordered them. As a result, Saint Francis is known as the patron of animals and ecology. He is also the patron of merchants — perhaps making his father proud, after all!
The final saint to visit the brothers is Saint Peter. Peter first met Jesus after a long, unproductive night of fishing. Jesus entered his boat and preached to a crowd from there. He then instructed Peter to lower his nets once more. Though doubtful, Peter complied, and the nets filled so abundantly with fish that two boats were required to carry the catch back to shore. For this reason, Saint Peter is the patron of fishermen, net makers, and shipbuilders. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus says, “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.” In Catholic tradition, Saint Peter is believed to stand at the gates of Heaven, welcoming new souls to enter.
Now that you know more about these saints, the next time a million dollars in cash falls in your lap, you’ll know exactly whom to call for a little divine guidance!

Where do we go after we die? How do we know what’s right? When does God answer prayer? As an alum of Candler School of Theology at Emory University, these questions, and others raised in this musical, caught my attention and piqued my interest. In my current role as Candler’s Assistant Director of Admissions, every day I talk to people interested in coming to seminary in order to grapple with similarly big questions. Some want to pursue an academic path and study the history of the church or untangle prickly theological debates, like the problem of suffering. Others long to gain hands-on experience and practical skills to care for those who are struggling with grief or to lead positive social change in their communities.
No matter if students aim to become professors, pastors, or changemakers, they leave Candler with more tools and approaches to help them think through fundamental questions about the nature of God, what it means to be human, and how to live a good life. I believe the stakes for how our students — and indeed all of us — answer these questions is high. Look around the world and you will see that what people believe about God, humanity, and the world matters deeply. It impacts the way our communities approach conflict, the solutions we can imagine together, and the moral values we hope to embody.
In Millions, we see each of the characters struggling with different answers to these questions. Anthony, the older brother and family realist, understands the world as a scary and corrupt place so he strives to be a protector and provider. Damian, on the other hand, is inspired by the example of the saints and desires to live a similar life of self-sacrifice and generosity. The more we learn about these two boys’ stories, the more we can see how their previous life experiences, especially dealing with the recent death of their mother, help explain their very different approaches to a sudden financial windfall. Contrasting perspectives are not a bad thing in and of themselves. Throughout the Christian ethical tradition, people — including some of the saints who make an appearance in this show — have engaged in productive debates, putting forward numerous, varied ways of understanding the ultimate good for individuals and society.
While this play leaves us with no easy solutions to living well in a complex and ethically-confusing world, I am taking away the need to listen to each other’s beliefs, hopes, and experiences in order to work together to forge a more beautiful future together.

Alliance Theatre Sets Wonder Free.
And what delights during performances ignites a brighter future. You can invest in better tomorrows by supporting access for youth to experience world-class theatre on a stage that’s all their own. Now is the time.
Introducing The Goizueta Stage For Youth And Families,
a transformative new space designed to inspire young audiences year-round. Research shows that early access to live theater can significantly combat critical issues like low literacy rates and the urgent youth mental health crisis. To fulfill this promise, the Alliance Theatre is launching a $10 million Imagine Endowment to expand our capacity to serve more young people and sustain these enriching experiences in perpetuity. With this endowment, the Goizueta Stage will be a beacon of accessibility, welcoming children from all backgrounds and removing economic, geographic, and physical barriers to ensure that every child can engage with the magic of theatre for generations to come.

ABOUT THE ALLIANCE THEATRE
Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre is the leading producing theatre in the Southeast, reaching more than 165,000 patrons annually. The Alliance is led by Jennings Hertz Artistic Directors Tinashe Kajese-Bolden and Christopher Moses, and Managing Director Mike Schleifer. The Alliance is a recipient of the Regional Theatre Tony Award® for sustained excellence in programming, education, and community engagement. In January 2019, the Alliance opened its new, stateof-the-art performance space, The Coca-Cola Stage at Alliance Theatre. Known for its high artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, the Alliance has premiered more than 135 productions including eleven that have transferred to Broadway. The Alliance education department reaches 90,000 students annually through performances, classes, camps, and in-school initiatives designed to support teachers and enhance student learning. The Alliance Theatre values community, curiosity, collaboration, and excellence, and is dedicated to representing Atlanta’s diverse community with the stories we tell, the artists, staff, and leadership we employ, and audiences we serve.
OUR MISSION
To expand hearts and minds onstage and off.
OUR VISION
Making Atlanta more connected, curious, and compassionate through theatre and arts education.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
In the sincerest efforts to gain further understanding of the history that has brought us to reside on this land and to accept the knowledge that colonialism is a current and ongoing process under which we need to build our mindfulness of our present participation, we hereby acknowledge this native land of the Muscogee Creek Nation.

Celebrating our supporters who have made a legacy gift to the Alliance Theatre.
The Legacy Society celebrates individuals who have made a planned gift to the Alliance Theatre. Making a planned gift is a wonderful way to show your support and appreciation for the Alliance Theatre and its mission, while accommodating your financial, estate planning and philanthropic goals. With smart planning, you may increase the size of your estate and/or reduce the tax burden on your heirs. Just as important, you will know that you have made a meaningful and lasting contribution to the Alliance Theatre.
