Alice is everywhere.

Images from Wonderland permeate our culture at every turn, whether it be the iconic animated Alice dressed in blue with a white pinafore or Johnny Depp’s charismatic Hatter. Lewis Carroll phrases like “mad as a hatter” or “down the rabbit hole” creep into everyday conversations.

So, fueled with the appeal of all these impressions, we set out to create a middle-school Alice in Wonderland. On the most obvious level, anyone in the midst of, or sustaining memories of their middle-school experience can vouch for a certain degree of madness when one is caught between the world of child and adult — yeah, that’s a crazy place.

As we explored the concept of our Alice experiencing a new middle school for the very first time, the inhabitants of Wonderland took on the blended identities of characters from the book and actual middle-school students. And ultimately, in at least one important way, our middle-school wonderland varies greatly from Carroll’s. Unlike his Alice’s encounters with volatile characters and unresolved circumstances, our Alice explores friendships of all kinds in Landwunder Middle School and, despite the madness around her, recognizes what is authentic.

It took a village to create Alice’s middle-school wonderland. So thank you Neeley and Steve, all those smart Alliance staffers, each and every Alliance Alice Between camper and, of course, the creative and whimsical cast, crew and design team.

I’d like to close this letter with a bit of lovely lyric created by a group of campers. It is written from the perspective of Alice’s Wonderland friends, Cheshire, Hatter and Caty (Caterpillar).

Explain it all so she won’t fall We’ll get her through the day ’Cause we can tell this won’t go well She must be new, yes we can tell This won’t go well, she must be new.

May every rabbit hole in which you fall lead you to rich adventures and authentic friendships.

Growing Pains With plenty of inspiration from Lewis Carroll, Alliance Theatre zeroes in on those dicey middle-school years.

I

n Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the 1865 classic by Lewis Carroll, the main character falls down a rabbit hole. Then it’s just one nonsensical thing after another.

Kind of like middle school.

Alice Between, a new play for family audiences commissioned by the Alliance Theatre, mashes up Carroll’s fantasy tale in clever and entertaining ways to address the angst and stings of middle school today.

As the play opens, a girl named Alice is late — of course, she’s late — for her very important first day as a new student at Landwunder Middle School. She’s also lost, and no one at 8 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

this ginormous school will tell her how to find the “700 hallway.”

Everybody knows that middle school can be crazy. Also cruel. In this heavy-duty, growingpains chapter of life, kids are full of insecurities.

As loyalties come and go, friendship trauma is a constant. Plenty of kids feel burdened by what others could be thinking or saying about them. So they’re forever fretful of embarrassing themselves.

Then there’s that whole social status “chart” thing that plagues many, if not all, kids in grades sixth through eighth — from who’s most popular (this week), to who’s just trying to stay

afloat in the murky middle waters, to those unfairly labeled as loner oddballs or, worse, “losers.”

All of this middle-school stuff abides in Alice Between.

At one point, Alice (Ashley Anderson), spats with former friend Tory (Lauren Boyd).

A student named Hatter (Anthony Campbell) overhears and comments: “Wow, I’m starting to miss the part where they were trying to kill each other with a dodgeball, instead of with words.”

(Tory, by the way, is short for Victoria, a nod to royalty, as in that seething Queen of Hearts from Carroll’s original story).

Playwrights Neeley Gossett and Steve Coulter have set the fast-paced play in a middle school in the present day. Their script was conceptualized with significant input from metro middle-school students. All current sixth-graders in Atlanta Public Schools (about 3,000 students), are among 17,000 slated to see the show. Thousands more will see it at their schools. There also are a handful of public performances at the Woodruff Arts Center’s Rich Theatre.

Question: How did Alice Between get rolling?

Christopher Moses: Rosemary Newcott, who directs this Alice, had the initial idea of wanting to use Alice in Wonderland as a metaphor for the middle-school experience.

Q: Why does a fresh take on Carroll’s 152-year-old novel work well for today’s 11to 14-year-olds?

CM: Absolutely. There’s so much questioning and discovery in the formative years of middle school (along with) humor and absurdity that seem to be a hallmark of this period in our lives.

CM: A girl falls down a rabbit hole and into an illogical world. She experiences this madness, this world that follows a set of rules that are completely indecipherable to her. We’ve worked with, and heard from, so many middle-school students who revealed that that’s exactly how it is for them. Their struggles and anxieties are very real. They almost feel as if school rules and regulations sometimes work against them.

Q: Please tell us more about your work with Atlanta middle-school students.

Q: When reading the play, it almost seems like Alice in Wonderland meets Mean Girls.

Because there’s also humor that bites, right?

We could not do this without their deep investment in its content and delivery. Then, once the play is in formal rehearsals, the

CM: For years we’ve had a commitment to develop new work specifically for them. We always include them in the long artistic process.

The play is not baked until we open, and it goes through a series of workshops — first with a wide array of middle-school students.

professional cast and creative team continue to mine the story for its truth. Middle-school students deserve nothing less.

Q: With last year’s Slur, which sprung from a junior-high classroom at the Paideia School, adults played the youngsters in the Alliance staging. Is Alice doing the same?

CM: Yes. We hire professional actors who have the ability, insights and experience to dive into a new script and new story, and deliver the material. Also, it’s a practical matter, considering we tour the show to schools in the daytime.

Q: There are only five actors in Alice Between. How to best convey that its story 12 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

unfolds in a school with tons of students?

CM: One way to solve the problem: The audience becomes part of the school population. It’s a fun conceit to implicate the crowd into the school.

Q: Talk about the characters here —all with direct links to Alice in Wonderland.

For example, Cheshire, who lurks about with a distinct grin but doesn’t speak?

CM: The characters are delightful. Cheshire is a physical role, even gymnastic. It was written with Joseph Pendergrast in mind because he has a very unique skill set — and can put on a disarming and very charming smile.

NEELEY GOSSETT (Playwright) has an M.F.A. from the Playwright’s Lab at Hollins University. Her works have been produced and read at the Weird Sisters Theatre Project, Emory University, 7 Stages, Lark Play Development Center and many other theaters. Several are published by YouthPLAYS. Neeley’s Roman Candle Summer was a Kendeda finalist and received a staged reading at the Alliance. Her play Decoration Day was chosen as an Alliance 2016 Kendeda Alumnus Reading. She’s also a recipient of the Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab. She has an M.A. in English from the University of North Carolina Wilmington and a B.A. in theater arts from Marymount Manhattan College. She is a tenure-track faculty member at GSU’s Perimeter College. With Nichole Palmietto, she co-founded Found Stages, through which her immersive play Beulah Creek premiered, earning a Suzi Bass Award nomination for the Gene-Gabriel Moore Playwriting Award.

STEVE COULTER (Playwright), who graduated from the North Carolina School of the Arts, was the head writer and executive story editor for both of Tyler Perry’s TV series, “House of Payne” and “Meet the Browns,” where he supervised more than 100 episodes and won two consecutive NAACP Image awards for best comedy series. He wrote and directed the awardwinning short film The Etiquette Man, selected by the Sundance Channel and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. His screenplay, Keesha’s House, won the $100,000 Southeastern Media Award. As an actor, his film and TV appearances include “The Wizard of Lies” (HBO) and recurring roles in “House of Cards,” “Brockmire” and “The Walking Dead.” Steve can be seen opposite Al Pacino in the upcoming Hangman, and with Ryan Gosling in First Man, directed by La La Land’s Damien Chazelle.

Tomlinson Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth and Families and has directed dozens of Alliance productions, including A Christmas Carol; Cinderella and Fella (premiere); Slur (premiere); The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; Pearl Cleage’s Tell Me My Dream (premiere); Courage (premiere); The Wizard of Oz; Seussical; Class of 3000 Live! (premiere); Go Dog Go!; Einstein Is a Dummy (premiere); The Book of Ruth; The Hobbit; and many more. She directed the Alliance Palefsky Collision Project for its first 10 years and pioneered the Alliance’s innovative Kathy and Ken Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young. Favorite directing experiences include Jason Invisible and Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Musical for the Kennedy Center and Frida Libre for La Jolla Playhouse. Rosemary was named an Atlanta Lexus Leader of the Arts in 2001 and has received the prestigious Princess Grace Foundation Fellowship. The Atlanta JournalConstitution named her best director of the year in 2002 and, in 2005, she won the GTC Distinguished Career Award. She is a 2009 recipient of the Princess Grace Special Projects Award and several Suzi awards, including the 2010 Spirit of Suzi Bass Award. profiles JEFF CONE (Costume Designer) most recently designed The Dancing Granny at the Alliance.

Before moving to Atlanta, Jeff spent 16 seasons as Portland Center Stage’s resident costume designer, working on more than 75 productions (50 of those in PCS’ first eight seasons at the Armory). Favorite PCS productions include West Side Story, Cabaret, Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Sometimes a Great Notion, Snow Falling on Cedars, The Imaginary Invalid, Black Pearl Sings!, Venus in Fur and Clybourne Park. Jeff received Drammy awards in Portland for his costume designs for Dirty Blonde, Act a Lady and Shakespeare’s Amazing Cymbeline.

ED THROWER (Sound Designer/Composer) is an Atlanta area musician who loves theater.

KARA PROCELL (Stage Manager) is proud to be a part of the stage management team at the Alliance Theatre. She stage managed last year’s Family Series production of Slur and was a stage management production assistant at the Alliance for three seasons. Credits include The Prom, Ethel, Disgraced, The Magic Negro, and Courage, among others. She previously stage managed the Alliance Teen Ensemble’s Antigone Presented by the Girls of St. Catherine’s. She also assists Alliance Theatre Education with summer drama camps and family programming. She trained as a technical improviser at Dad’s Garage, is the production manager for Found Stages Theatre and is a company member of the Weird Sisters Theatre Project. Academy Theatre. Jody is the Producer and Casting Director at the Alliance, where she started in 1991 as casting director. While at the Alliance, she has cast and produced more than 200 LORT B, D and TYA productions encompassing a wide range of world premieres including The Last Night of Ballyhoo by Alfred Uhry, What I Learned in Paris by Pearl Cleage, Broke by Janece Shaffer, In the Red and Brown Water by Tarell Alvin McCraney and more than 10 years of Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition-winning plays, plus such world and regional premiere musicals as Tuck Everlasting, Aida, The Color Purple, Sister Act: The Musical, Bring It On: The Musical, Ghost Brothers of Darkland County and Harmony, A New Musical. Jody is most proud of the thriving Alliance engagement activities and partnerships that recognize theatrical work as a catalyst for community conversation and connection.

SUSAN V. BOOTH (Jennings Hertz Artistic Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2001 and has initiated the Palefsky Collision Project for teens, the Alliance/ Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, the Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab, local producing partnerships and regional collaborations as well as commercial partnerships such as Tuck Everlasting; The Ghost Brothers of Darkland County; The Color Purple; Bring It On: The Musical; Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away With Me; Sister Act: The Musical; Bring in ’da Noise, Bring in ’da Funk and Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL. As a director, she has worked at such theaters as the Goodman, La Jolla Playhouse, New York Stage and Film, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens, Court Theatre and many others. She holds degrees from Denison and Northwestern universities and was a fellow of the National Critics Institute and the Kemper Foundation. She has held teaching positions at Northwestern, DePaul, and Emory universities. She is a past president of the board of directors for the Theatre Communications Group, the national service organization for the field, and is a trustee of Denison University. Susan is married to Max Leventhal and is the proud mother of Moira Rose Leventhal.

Alice Between lets the audience take a look at middle-school life and all of its drama through the main character of Alice in Wonderland.

The symbolism is not missed on middle-school students and teachers as every day in middle school is a journey down the rabbit hole with surprises at every turn, characters that evolve and situations that explode and implode. The audience walks away with a new compassion for these volatile years and struggles while always rooting for Alice to find her way to friendship and acceptance.

about the alliance theatre The Alliance Theatre is Atlanta’s national theater, expanding hearts and minds onstage and off. The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of three committees working together on fundsaving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre. The three committees are the Theatre Advocates, the Theatre Educators, and the Theatre Ushers.
